The Midway Community Hall was transformed into a Dr. Seuss wonderland on Saturday as the Midway Community Club put on a Whoville Children’s Christmas Party.

preformed by some of the older kids, Christmas Carols, professional air brushed face painting, lots of crafts, colouring and cookie decorating.

There was also coffee, tea, hot chocolate, hot dogs and treats. All children aged 0-10 received a gift from Santa.

Mrs. Claus, who had accompanied Santa, said the trip provided a nice opportunity for the reindeer to get some practice landing on roofs. “They did a nice landing in Fort St. James but down in

Williams Lake they missed and they slid across the lake,” she admitted. “But we made it and we made it on time. By the time the big day rolls around they’ll be good to go.”

Boundary Community Church Christmas Day Service Wednesday, December 25, 2013, 10 am at the Midway Community Hall

Gym packed for concert The gymnasium at West Boundary Elementary School was packed as parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbours came to the 2013 Christmas Concert.

The theme was stories of past Christmases in the Boundary, the Herdman family performed Little Drummer Boy. Stories were provided by Pat Pownall, Art Harfman, tapes from interviews local historical biographer Pownall has done with pioneers and by children reading stories of their grandparents.

Harfman reminded everyone that the important thing about gifting is not the size or cost of the gift but the acknowledgment that you love somebody.

The Rock Creek Women’s institute each year raffles a quilt at the fall fair with some of the proceeds going to the community and the school.

This year the quilt raffle enabled the WI to give $200 to Boundary Hospice and the balance of $685.88 going to WBES PAC for the food program.

As they do each year the students and staff of WBES gathered on the stage at the end of the concert to lead everyone in a round of We Wish You a Merry Christmas.

Financial Planning Check Up It’s hard to believe that 2013 is almost over! As a new year begins, now is a good time to take a look back and think about all the changes that you and your family have experienced over the past year and plan for any updates needed to your financial plan.

Any major changes, whether they are personal or professional, can have a significant impact on your family’s insurance needs. A yearend review of your situation will help ensure that you have adequate coverage.

If your family has grown, or you got married this year, your responsibility now extends to another person. Be sure to expand your life and disability coverage accordingly. A divorce, serious illness, or death in the family may also require you to adjust your insurance and estate plans.

If you have changed employment or are expecting a raise or promotion soon, then your financial plan needs to be updated. With higher income come higher financial losses to your family if something were to happen to you. If you have lost your job or retired, then it is crucial to replace your group insurance benefits with a personal plan.

With rising costs, perhaps you have taken on more debt. If you have purchased a new home, a new car or borrowed to renovate your bathroom, make sure your insurance is adequate to cover all liabilities and interest payments.

Year end is also a good time to give your mutual funds and investment portfolio a checkup.

With the year coming to an end, watch for year end distributions outside of registered plans. Before buying new units, find out if the fund expects to make a year end tax distribution. If you invest now, you may end up paying tax for the whole year. It might be more taxefficient to delay your purchase until the New Year.

If appropriate for your investment strategy, consider selling your

non-registered portfolio of holdings that are in a loss position. A capital loss must first be used to offset the tax on any capital gains realized in the same year. Any remaining loss can be applied to gains from the previous three years or used in the future. It is important to seek professional advice to determine the best strategy for your situation.

December 31 is the deadline to contribute to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews so that you qualify for the Canada Education Savings Grant for 2013. Recent government budget changes to RESP rules raised the amount on which the CESG is paid to $2,500 from $2,000. So if you contribute $2,500 before the end of the year, your RESP will get an extra $500 from the CESG. The budget also eliminated the annual contribution limit and raised the lifetime maximum contribution to $50,000 from $42,000 per beneficiary.

If you tum 71 this year, you have until December 31, 2013 to convert your RRSPs to a Registered Retirement Income fund. Your income, however, can be deferred until the next year to allow you time to start budgeting this extra income for tax purposes.

Heavy Duty presentation Scott Stewart, principal of Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS), gave a presentation to the SD51 board at the board meeting on Dec. 10 regarding the recent Project Heavy Duty.

The project featured five GFSS students and six from Boundary Central Secondary School (BCSS) students. The 11 spent one day of training and two days of onsite construction or forestry.

Stewart said the feedback received from students was very positive.

Student Travis Van Camp was on hand and stated that he enjoyed the experience and would like to make a career of it.

“The board, for a long time, has supported stuff at both of our high schools in trying to get different types of trades opportunity in the schools for the students,” said Teresa Rezansoff, board chair for SD61.

Teresa Rezansoff was unanimously re-elected board chair and Cathy Riddle was re-elected vice-chair.

For Rezansoff, a Grand Forks’ resident, it’s her tenth year as board chair

and sixth consecutive. She is pleased to return and she says there are still lots for the board to get done.

“We’re two thirds of our way through our term,” said Rezansoff. “I think we’ve got some great things in place. We have a new senior administration team. The majority of our principles are in new schools. There’s lot of new energy that’s been generated by people taking on new challenges and looking for new opportunities.

Representatives named Cindy Strukoff was elected BCSTA provincial councilor and BCPSEA representative/BCSTA bargaining council representative.

Ken Harshenin was named as the trustee representative to the Okanagan Labour Relations Council.

Festival organizers address concerns For Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, organizing a music festival had been a dream of theirs for some years and right from the beginning they had envisioned Rock Creek as the hosting community. Last September long weekend the Rock Creek Fairgrounds were the venue for the first Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival.

But at the November 2013 fall fair association meeting there were complaints of noise expressed by some nearby neighbors.

There was considerable discussion of the complaint at the meeting with the decision being made to send Ron Palmer, head of the fair board’s contract committee, back to Hargrave and Zahrabi to see if an accommodation could be reached regarding decibel levels and hours of playing the amplified music.

On Dec. 2, Ponderosa organizers issued a press release to respond to the complaints.

“We have spoken with the board and are aware of the concerns voiced by members of the community. In order to gain community support we are: 1) working on informing residents of Rock Creek on who we are, what our new festival is all about and how we see it benefiting the community, and 2) working with our stage/sound contractor and the board to develop a reasonable plan that addresses the issue of noise.”

“Recent news reports stated that some residents living near the fairgrounds site had voiced complaints of the level of the sound system during the event,” read the media release. “To address these issues, festival organizers are looking into potential alternatives to the previous stage setup and/or music

schedule. They are currently working closely with their professional stage and sound crew to look at various options including adhering to a maximum decibel level after a certain hour in the night.”

Zahrabi confirmed that Palmer had asked how they felt about shutting down at 11 p.m. or midnight.

Grace McGregor, Area C (Christina Lake) director, has been chosen as board chair for the Regional District of the Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) at the board meeting on Dec. 5 in Trail.

McGregor won out over Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor.

She replaces Larry Gray, who was board chair for two consecutive years.

McGregor said she was thrilled to be chosen and will work hard to represent the region.

“Larry informed me a few months ago that he was not going to run again as board chair,” she told the Gazette. “He decided he didn’t want to do that again. I understand that he wants to spend time with his family and I understand that.”

McGregor said she learned a great deal under Gray.

“I’ve been the vice-chair the last two years with Larry Gray,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve spent with that man. He’s a wealth of information and he’s very solid and very even-

Bless those who give According to the 2013 Child Poverty Report Card, published by firstcall.org, the latest figures from Statistics Canada (2011) once again show that B.C. is the worst province in Canada when it comes to major measures of child poverty.

Some numbers where has won the race to the bottom: • 18.6 per cent — The child poverty rate in B.C. • 49.8 per cent — The poverty rate for children living in single mother families.

• 14 per cent — The poverty rate for children living in two-parent families.

• 20.7 per cent — B.C’.s poverty rate for children under 6 years of age (eight percentage points higher than the Canadian average).

There is abundant evidence of the harm done to children’s health and development by growing up in poverty, and of the huge additional costs in health care, education, the justice system and lost productivity we are already paying by keeping poverty rates so high.

Yet the province doesn’t have a plan to address child poverty. In 2012 a program set out to develop “regional poverty reduction strategies.” This pilot program directly affected only 10 to 15 low-income families in seven communities, with promises to scale the initiative up to more communities within a year or two.

The 2013 Poverty Report Card notes that there has yet to be a public reporting of the outcomes of these seven initiatives.

Poverty numbers are tracked nationally and provincially, but the real impact of poverty happens at the level of the individual family. That’s where the hunger is felt the most.

Thank goodness our communities are filled with wonderful people who see the need as immediate and take action through the Lion’s Christmas Hampers, Food Sharing and emergency food banks.

Penticton realtor seeks nomination On Tuesday, Dec. 3, Penticton resident and Real Estate Agent, Marshall Neufeld, officially announced that he is seeking the Conservative nomination in the new federal riding of South Okanagan West Kootenay.

“My primary reason for running is out of a sense of service. Service has always been important to me,” said Neufeld, who sat for two terms on the National Council of the Conservative Party of Canada and is Past President of the local Conservative riding association.

Neufeld is also the former Senior Parliamentary Assistant in Ottawa to the Hon. Stockwell Day, who expressed his support of Marshall by stating “The people of South Okanagan West Kootenay would be well served by having Marshall as their representative.”

Neufeld told over 70 supporters gathered in Penticton, “I am running not only to be your Conservative nominee in the next federal election but also to become the South Okanagan West Kootenay’s Member of Parliament.”

For the last five years, Marshall has been a Real Estate Agent in Penticton, in partnership with his father Chuck Neufeld.

Born and raised in Penticton, Marshall has been an active member of the community since his teenage years, volunteering with local causes, and raising money. He has served as the Vice Chair of the Penticton Christian School Board.

While working on Parliament Hill, Neufeld experienced first-hand how much good can be achieved through politics - whether implementing a large scale project for the benefit of many people, or defending basic economic principles of low taxes, free trade and a fair and open field for competition.

“Let there be no misunderstanding, this riding will not be a guaranteed seat for any of the three main parties, the Conservatives, the NDP or the Liberals under Justin Trudeau. There will be a real race here in the next election. It is our job – the members of the Conservative Party of Canada in South Okanagan West Kootenay – to ensure this seat

Adele and I made up the theory that you are a ghost because you have been alive when even my great Grandmas and Grandpas were alive. Also ghosts can fit through tiny holes even when they are chubby.

I counted 113 people! 87 of those people had animals, like doges, cats, birds and other small creatures. Sixty-two of those people were children!

Dear Santa Dear Santa, How is Rudolph? I am wondering how you fit down the chimney? It is so small and I mean small. Anyways, when my sister was four or so she thought clouds were mashed potatoes.

One Christmas Eve, we were eating Christmas Eve dinner and as usual we were eating ham, brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes. My sister, Siarrah asked, “ How does Santa get through the mashed potatoes in the sky without getting stuck?” We all laughed anyways, I don’t need a lot for Christmas I just want people to have a nice Christmas.

If it’s okay, I would like to tell you what I want for Christmas, I would like one of three things. Firstly, I would like a desktop computer with enough space to play my Sims game without glitches. Secondly, a horse is another option I would like on that is agile and strong. The last thing I would really like is a harness for Darby, my dog. I really want to train her to pull a sled or sleigh and a harness will help.

Merry Christmas Warm wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

We as a family have a tradition that I would like to tell. Late at night, the day before Christmas, we go and have a tree hunt. We usually go with our cousin. My Dad has a Volkswagen van that is huge and all of us hop in to it.

After a long time of walking someone spots a tree. My older brothers, Alexander and Stefan, cut it down usually with a handsaw. It takes a lot of might and we get the tree in the van. Now we are home and we have beautiful tree. Here comes the fun part the kids decorate.

As we decorate the tree there are a lot of memories of past Christmas’s running through our heads. After our tree is made beautiful we hop in our beds and wait for Christmas night to open our presents. I can’t wait for that night to come again.

Goblin the cat decided to climb it, that was two years ago. Also, once the Christmas tree came tumbling down. I love decorating the Christmas tree. It is very fun. I have always wanted to put the star on the tree. Christmas is one of my favourite holidays because Jesus was born on Christmas. I also love it because we all get to share and open presents.

An angel went to Mary and said to her that she was to give birth to a son and she shall name him Jesus.

The angel said that ‘the power of God will come over you’. Once Joseph and Mary got married they went to Bethlehem and it came close to when Mary was to give birth but there was no room in the Inn so a man let them spend the night in the barn. Jesus was born and his bed was a manager. At night, while the shepherds kept watch over their sheep, an angel appeared to them and said in Bethlehem a baby is born and he is Christ the Lord. The shepherds then headed to Bethlehem to see the wonderful thing that had happened. Once they saw them they worshipped Jesus and spread the good news.

Wise men also came and gave the baby Jesus myrrh, gold, and incense.

This is what the holiday celebration means to me.

I have a sister and two brothers. I also have two more brothers by Heart. All of us went to our oldest brothers house. He actually lives with his friend and his parents. Anyway all four of us went over there. The first thing that we did was to tie a role on a whole bunch of sleds and attached it to his quad. We got one the sleds and drove all over a mountain. It was a kind of scary but, still really fun! One of my brothers fell off when we hit a snow bank. We didn’t know he fell off so we kept going. Then we noticed that he was gone so we went looking for him.

We finally found him by a tree looking like Jack Frost. He sat with my brother Sage in the front and really was okay after a while. When we got back to the house we drank hot chocolate. It was an awesome day.

Clarissa Steele Grade 5, WBES My favourite winter memory is one day I was at school with my friends and family. It was the day of the Christmas play. It was our turn to sing and we sang the song in French. It was lots of fun and the best part was that my friends and family were there. I think we sang really well and that everyone did great!

Shivana Sardinha Grade 6, WBES My favourite winter memory is about Jayden and I climbing an 80-degree angle behind my house. When we started we were a little scared at first because there were pointy rocks below where we were climbing. Near the top of the mountain, which is about fifty feet high, we saw a branch about a couple feet away we grabbed it and pulled ourselves up to the top. The first thing I thought was ‘how did we survive that’ and the second of my thoughts was ‘I’m hungry’ so we went down and had lunch.

Kayden Eaton Grade Five, WBES One of my favourite things in winter is when it first snows. Another one is going outside with my older brother and sister. We would pack sleds, build snowmen and make snow angels.

When we get too cold and tired of playing then we would hang up our snow stuff and sit by the fire drinking cocoa to warm up.

Usually, we also start in about mid-November Christmas baking. I have so many more memories and I am always happy to make more.

Truly, the memory that lasts with me most is seeing the smiles on my family’s faces when they open their Christmas presents.

HARMONY CONTENTMENT With heartfelt thanks from all of us at this special time of year.

It all started in Merrit, B.C. where my family and I were about to drive to drive to Vancouver to get on a plane to Ontario, which would then take us to the Spanish Bahamas. We were planning to stay with my step dad’s family for two weeks. Anyways, we were about to get in the car when we found out the car wasn’t working right.

About ten minutes later, and two wrenches later we were off. We finally arrived at the airport and had to run like crazy while packing our luggage. It was really confusing trying to find the right gate. When we got through security and was on the plane, Cara, my obnoxious little sister, started crying and crying.

The rest of the plane trip was kind of a blur but when we got out of the plane the only thing I could see was palm trees and ocean. When we took our golf cart to the house we rented I realized how much more beautiful the Bahamas were then what I originally thought. Really, all we did there was swim, hike, and hang around.

Although, we did go to the Junkanoo Festival. It was a New Years celebration where people of all ages dress up in homemade costumes and dance around. I had the most fun on that trip than I ever had before during a holiday.

Jayden Uphill Grade 5, WBES My favourite winter memory is when I went to my great grandma’s house for Christmas. She lives by the river so we brought our hockey nets since the river was frozen. We were skating and playing hockey with my cousins Devon and Brayden. It was really fun. When we went inside by then my sister had already found something to amuse herself with by doing Aunty Jamie’s makeup set with her Bratz doll makeup. She had received the gift earlier that morning and my aunty looked quiet…stunning. What does the holiday mean to me? It means hot chocolate drinks, playing outside in the snow, sledding with my sister, and spending time with my family.

Hannah Corfe Grade 5, WBES My favourite winter memory is when my brother and me played in the snow together. My brother did a face plant in the snow and it was so funny. Then we went sledding, which was also fun.

I did a face plant in the snow shortly after that.

Almost every year when there is snow on the ground my sisters and I keep a good watch on the step driveway. This is because in the morning Dad goes down the steep driveway to feed the bulls. When one of us see him going down to the bales we really fast yell, ‘Go Go Go!” Then we all get on our snow clothes, grab our sleds, and sled down the steep driveway. We go really fast! After our Dad is done feeding the bulls he puts down the big basket on the tractor and we hop in. Then he closes the claws on the tractor and starts to go up the hill. The funniest part is when he goes up the hill and he makes the bucket go up and down. Then we get to the top of the hill and he puts the bucket down and we get out and play in the snow.

Everyday in the winter we have a day we call jump day. On jump day you have to do your chores before you go jumping into your sled.

When you finally get to climb the hill in the sled you are afraid that you are going to hit a tree.

When you get to the top and start to descend you build up speed. If you lean a little bit you will go that way. It is pretty easy to turn because of that. Hitting a jump you can go any direction.

I once did a back flip, 180 and hit a tree. Jump day is truly fun!

Well, my name is Solannah and one wintery night my sister, Sheinah, and I were planning on going on our skidoo up the mountain. We started it up and it back fired on us. I almost fell off but I didn’t so we started it up again. Soon enough we hit a big bump and that time I did go overboard. The skidoo kept going and it went in a straight line and chased after my Dad. Finally, he jumped out of the way, hopped on the skidoo and shut it off. After that it was the end of the skidoo.

Agency takes on e-publishing GREG NESTEROFF Boundary Creek Times Contrubtor

Local literary agent Morty Mint is expanding into self-publishing — but not the traditional kind. Mint’s agency, whose Kootenay clients include Anne DeGrace, Holley Rubinsky, and Cindi Sand-Eveland, will be the first in Canada acting for authors of e-books and print-ondemand works.

“I’m feeling like a kid again,” the industry veteran says. “I’m having an absolute ball learning all of this. I think the potential is awesome.”

Before moving to Nelson in 2004, Mint’s long publishing career took him to the top of Penguin Canada, where in six years he increased sales fivefold. He also had his own publishing firm and distributed books that sold millions, like the Guinness Book of Records and Ripley’s Believe it or Not! All along he’s been a staunch advocate for Canadian authors and books—and in recent years, a benefactor to the Kootenay literary scene.

As part of his latest venture, Mint will

match authors with editors and cover designers, and help them with marketing. But on top of that he has an arrangement with eBOUND Canada, a non-profit wing of the Association of Canadian Publishers, giving his clients a leg up on the digital marketplace.

As with the rest of his business, he takes a 15 per cent commission.

“I want to work with writers and help them help themselves,” he says. “Opportunities for authors are dwindling in terms of where they can get published in Canada. A great many are looking at self-publishing and doing it on their own.”

With recent bankruptcies and mergers in the Canadian publishing industry, Mint expects fewer new titles in print. However, he predicts tremendous growth in electronic self-publishing, noting that e-books already account for up to 25 per cent of Simon & Schuster‘s US sales.

It doesn’t hurt that ebooks are a lot cheaper to produce than their print counterparts.

He’s not abandoning the business of finding publishers for manuscripts, nor is he going to be less choosy about who he takes on. “I’m going to use the same selective judgment. Will I accept everybody? No.” Mint already has some writers and titles in mind, including one he couldn’t sell to a publisher. In addition to new works, he says epublishing is a good way to resurrect out-of-print books whose rights have reverted to the author.

Once he accepts a writer, he’ll work with them to decide if a given manuscript is better suited to seeking a publisher or self-publishing as an e-book and printon-demand. Authors determined to self-publish in larger quantities he’ll steer elsewhere.

Mint says some self-published authors might not see the benefit to having an agent, but others find navigating all the steps by themselves overwhelming. Furthermore, individual writers won’t

be able to access eBOUND. “Authors want to do it on their own, but the time and energy [required] is crazy,” Mint says. “I don’t want to be a publisher or a distributor in the conventional sense. I want to continue to be an agent.”

A sweet time was had by all who turned up at the cookie decorating event sponsored by the Community Action Program for Children last Friday at the Medical Center’s activity room.

Some of the children took advantage of the toboggan hill to burn off their cookie calories right away while others took time to decorate

Seven lucky winners took home decorated cookie door prizes.

Thanks to all who baked cookies for the event and helped out.

Like the shepherds we have heard about Jesus and encountered Him. We have God’s hope, Jesus dwelling in us. Remember in the darkest of times the smallest of lights is bright. We have light, we have hope. During this dark time of history let us, like the shepherds take the message of hope and light to all who will listen.

As we look to the New Year, we have hope. Just as the dawn brings the promise and hope of the new day, so does a new year bring promise and hope to our lives. I am looking forward to next year and where God may lead us. Now more than ever we need to make a difference in this world.

There was a team who spent some time the Tuesday before the party wrapping the gifts that Santa had stored with the community club as well as some he’d left with Heather at the Yellow Door in Greenwood to be handed out during the day.

“The Whoville theme was Jolly’s idea (even the costumes) but people from all our communities came together to make it happen,” Kappes said in an interview a few days after the party. “It really was a Boundary Christmas. Without a lot of people coming out of the woodwork and offering their skills and energy it wouldn’t have been possible.” Others who contributed included Janice (on the piano) and Rob Lucas, Linda Demchuk, Tia Nordstrom, Chris Danyluk, Sue Fielding and Elaine Fromme – with apologies to anyone forgotten on the list. Kathleen Wheeler was on hand providing airbrush face painting for anyone interested.

“As a community club we really struggled over the last year,” Kappes admitted. “Most of us involved in the club up until this point have no little kids and were kind of at a loss for just what to do.

“We have really kind of blossomed again as a community club.

We’ve had two dances and a picnic in the park and now this amazing Christmas for all of you.

“Bigger and better things for all of you and the more people who are willing to come out and lend a hand and give us some ideas we are so open to it.

“Thanks you all so much for everything and for just being here and making it real.”

The next community club event will be movie night this Friday evening at 7 p.m. when they will be screening Santa Clause with Tim Allen. Admission $2 gets you a seat, popcorn and a drink (bring your own plastic cup).

The Midway Community Hall was truly transformed into a winter wonderland on Saturday.

Deadwood lights up the night

Erica Harcus was enjoying the snow and the snowballs before Santa arrived at Deadwood Junction.

The 5th annual Christmas tree lightup at Greenwood’s Deadwood Junction was bigger and better than ever—this year with a real sleigh all decked out for the photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

The event had been postponed for a week because of incredibly cold temperatures earlier in the month.

Unfortunately that meant that a lot of the Greenwood Elementary students weren’t available for their usual band concert this year because of commitments to hockey, etc.

But hot dogs and fries were available by donation with all proceeds going to the Greenwood Elementary School.

The Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department transported Santa, Mrs. Claus and their Elf to Deadwood again this year. Santa’s use of this Park and Ride option has become a tradition now – according to old newspaper articles it all began a few of years ago when there wasn’t enough snow for Santa to land his sleigh in Canada’s Smallest City so the firemen pitched in. This gives Santa the benefit of a heated cab to ride in on the last leg of the trip each year.

The successful candidate will also have a proven track record in the digital space, both from managing and growing content websites to expanding our social media branding. A keen understanding of all social media platforms is required. Great layout and creative design skills are also key to this position so a proven background in all types of layout is mandatory. This position will also require travel between different Kootenay communities so a reliable vehicle and clean driver’s license is required.
