Students in the Grade 7-8 band at École Fox Run School delighted family and friends during their winter concert last Friday afternoon. The group of 47 is the biggest band they’ve had at the school all in one class, said director Kristi Baldwin. “They’re one of the most unique groups, so respectful, a really great group.” Part of the reason they’ve come together so well is they held their band camp in October this year instead of the spring, she added. Playing trumpets were Joshua Parenteau, Daniel Craig, Alex Harlos, an unidentified person hidden from view, Jared Miller, Erica Johnston and Ashley Tait. In the background on percussion were Tikvah MacIntyre, Kirsten Prelle, Serena Scott and Mason Hermanutz. Another photo is on page 31.

Sylvan residents displaying 17 foot Christmas village

While some Sylvan Lake residents have taken the time to create a festive look on the outside of their homes, Tammy Smith and Kent Haeberle have done just that inside theirs.

Together, using a variety of Christmas ornaments and figurines, they created a small village, complete with a ski hill, a Christmas cookie factory, a skating rink and a train station — as well as many villagers who make use of those amenities.

The village fully covers a 17 foot table, which runs from their kitchen to living room. Almost every piece is at least partially functional, including a choir that actually creates music and a photographer whose picture-taking is accompanied by a real flash.

Haeberle and Smith have created similar village displays in the past, and decided that this year, after taking a three year break, they would build one again.

Doing so took between three and four hours of work, according to Haeberle.

“To set this up, we started on Sunday and finished (Thursday),” he said. “We haven’t done it for three years now, so we decided to do it this year, because Tammy’s nieces and nephews are getting a little older, so they will appreciate it more.”

The couple has collected pieces for the village from various department stores over the years, and added several new items to this year’s display.

The urge to keep adding is always strong, said Smith, even when space is limited.

Another season of joy celebrated in our great community This is the season when all the magnificent talents of our students and their teachers are showcased through a variety of Christmas concerts that bring together neighbours and friends to celebrate.

Again this year, we’ve had the pleasure of attending many events, whether it has been band and choir concerts or dramatic performances, where we’ve seen how well our community supports its arts and culture sector.

As well, the outpouring of support for organizations such as the food bank and Christmas Bureau have been heartening.

Despite dealing with weather issues and illness typical of this season of the year, youngsters and adults have all contributed to the bright light which shines over Sylvan Lake when it comes to a community uniting.

Christmas about sharing hope and generosity for those in need

Christmas is a wonderful time of year.

The season offers us the opportunity to reflect on the strength of our families, our communities and our loved ones.

And with New Years approaching, it gives us a chance to reflect back over the past year.

In June, we saw just how strong the character of our province is as we faced the worst flooding in Alberta’s history.

The people of Central Alberta, and in our constituency of Innisfail-Sylvan Lake, rallied together to care for those most impacted. Our reaction to the flood in the early days and until this holiday season truly is a testament to who we are as Albertans.

As your MLA, we have been working tirelessly this past year to address the urgent priorities affecting you and our community.

On the health care file we put forward a patient friendly strategy to crack down on wait times and in the legislature I introduced Bill 208 to make the

Sylvan Lake branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society was formed in 1926, by Rev. D. Marr, who was then district secretary at Calgary.

Members of the first committee here were James Dingwall, president, Mrs. A. M. Steele, secretary-treasurer, and

Seniors Advocate independent to fix a broken system.

We have been advocating for a future where we can take care of our most vulnerable, respect taxpayer dollars, eliminate waste and mismanagement and focus on delivering good public services.

It is these principles that drive us and why we will fight every day to put Albertans first in the coming New Year.

Of course, the season is more important than politicians.

Christmas is always about sharing that hope and generosity to those in need.

Across the province, charities, food banks and volunteers are working countless hours this Christmas to make sure those without a roof can have warmth, and who hunger can be made whole.

Please remember to give back to our community if you have the time or the resources this season.

Since then a canvass has been made each year and forwarded to the Bible House, Calgary. The amount has steadily increased and this year reached a record, $88.30 being collected; this was $47.30 more than last year’s amount of $41.00. This increase is partly due to a visit by Mr. Burnett, a representative of the Bible House, who, by the courtesy of Rev. Ian MacSween, pastor of the Memorial church, occupied the pulpit and spoke on the work of the society.

This year proceed will be divided between the Legion Polio Fund and the Sylvan Lake Legion Band. ♦ ♦ ♦ The Seniors Citizens party, sponsored by the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Social Credit League, held in Legion Hall recently, was well attended and much enjoyed by those present. Mr. Jay Wilkinson was chairman of the event, Mr. Harry Durward conducted

the community singing and Mrs. Angus Martin at the piano and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Sawyer and their orchestra supplied instrumental music. Mrs. Frank Dallaire conducted the “Way Back When” part of the program, among some of the enquiries were: who had some sleigh bells did anyone ever live in a sod shack, did anyone still use a straight razor, who used to wear moccasins? There were many who could answer yes to many of the questions. ♦ ♦ ♦ Cole’s IGA offered A grade turkeys for 39¢ lb. and fully cooked 1/2 or 1/4 hams at 49¢ lb.

- Sylvan Lake Rotary Club member Jim MacSween welcomed seniors to Sylvan Lake Seniors’ Centre and introduced the choir from École H. J. Cody High School which performed for them during the annual Christmas lunch for seniors. It was a full house with over 90 people served a delicious ham and turkey dinner at the Rotary Club sponsored event which was catered by Pier 7. Choir members were thanked by the Rotary Club with a pizza party at school after their performance.

Cheques were accepted Monday night by Eric Allison ($600 for children’s programs at Jazz At the Lake), Jas Payne ($1,500 for the Get Real program at École Fox Run School), and Donna Ellerby ($1,600 for fundraising equipment and $1,200 for upgrading computer programs for children’s programming at Sylvan Lake and Area Community Partners Association). Making the presentations were fund board member Jacqueline Ruhe and board chairman Frank Peck.

- Young Jake McKill assisted community peace officers Jarvis Gamroth and Nick Reijnen during the charity checkstop held by Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment, Sylvan Lake & District Victim Services Unit, Sylvan Lake Fire Department and Sylvan Lake Municipal Enforcement on 47th Avenue Saturday. Over $13,600 in cash donations and other donations of food and toys were collected at the checkstop between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., reported organizer Jennifer Plotnikoff. Talented

- Students of the four Grade 1 classes at École Steffie Woima Elementary School entertained friends and family during two concerts last Thursday.

They used the theme There Was An Old Lady for the concert. Each class sang a song and then they combined for a medley of five songs. Because of the number of students at the school this year and the number of people who want to watch them perform, each grade level is performing at a different time of the year. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students have performed in the past two weeks. Others will perform later in the year.

- Long service awards were presented to staff during the annual Christmas and awards dinner at Sylvan Lake Lodge last Wednesday.

- Sylvan Lake Cubs and other Waskasoo area Cubs, Scouts and Venturers braved frigid temperatures the weekend of Dec. 7 to attend a Fast/Flex/Focus course put on at Camp Woods. Our Cubs participated in the FLEX portion (Fun Learning EXperience) which is geared to Cub aged youth and is a leadership training course. RCMP NOTES

No injuries in school bus collision Sunday, December 8th 9:55 a.m. – RCMP were called to assist the fire department at a residence on Westview Drive in Sylvan Lake. A garage at that location caught fire after a wood burning stove was left unattended for a few minutes. Flames were extinguished quickly by fire crews. There were no injuries.

Monday, December 9th 11:51 a.m. – Members were conducting a check stop on 47th Avenue in Sylvan Lake when a vehicle continued through without stopping and ignored directions to pull over.

The vehicle was pursued and stopped on Highway 20 at Memorial Trail.

The male driver exhibited obvious signs of impairment and was administered a roadside screening device.

A 37-year-old Sylvan Lake male is now facing charges of impaired driving and driving with an alcohol level over .08.

Wednesday, December 11th 3:51 p.m. – RCMP attended a motor vehicle collision involving a school bus and a truck on Lakeway Boulevard at Memorial Trail in Sylvan Lake. The drivers and witnesses involved advised that the rear end of the bus slid out while the driver was turning a corner and was struck by a passing pickup truck.

School children were present on the bus when the collision occurred however no injuries were reported.

8:55 p.m. – A 52-year-old Calgary male is facing an impaired driving charge after RCMP attended a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road on Range Road 23 near Highway 11A. A call was placed to dispatch by a witness advising that a male was hunched over behind the steering wheel of a vehicle.

The male exhibited obvious signs of impairment and was arrested at the scene. The accused was administered a roadside screening device and is charged with impaired care and control of a vehicle and having a blood alcohol level over .08.

Wearing guitar bars on one hand, they have put in a lot of hard work to master their playing in the adapted guitar program. Cody Christmas concert features guitar ensemble, band and choir

One of the highlights of the Christmas music concerts at École H. J. Cody High School was the performance of the Guitar Ensemble which provided five tunes. The students are a mix of Grade 10, 11 and 12 students, some who have been playing for just three months while others have been playing a lot longer, said director Kerry Heisler. Only about a third of the guitar students performed in the Friday evening or Saturday afternoon conferences due to other commitments with sports or family.

A delightful selection of songs were played by the Grade 9 and 10 band at École H. J. Cody High School who were joined by several Grade 11 and 12 students during concerts on the weekend. Over 300 guests attended the two performances.

Noels, The Journey, Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer, December’s Keep and It’s Christmas were the selections sung by members of the École H. J. Cody High School Choir during two concerts on the weekend.

Music director Kerry Heisler joined guitar students for several selections during the Christmas concerts at École H. J. Cody High School last Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

Safety jeopardized through vandalism at oilfield site

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS The safety of workers arriving at an oilfield site Saturday was compromised after major components of a service rig were vandalized overnight.

Sylvan Lake RCMP are seeking assistance in identifying suspects responsible for the destruction and theft of fuel and tools from the site southwest of Eckville last Friday night or early Saturday morning.

“The suspects entered the well site and broke into a service rig and adjacent shacks,” reported RCMP Cst. Marty Reed. “The suspects stole fuel as well as numerous tools. Most concerning however, is that the suspects also vandalized the rig in a manner which caused major components of the rig to become unsafe for employees who arrived on site the next morning to start work.”

Searching for a unique gift, a number of Sylvan Lake residents have chosen to purchase items that meet critical needs in places where World Vision works.

More than 26 local residents and families included charitable presents from the World Vision gift catalogue in their holiday giving last year. They purchased $11,820 worth of essential items ranging from live-

stock to clean water to medical supplies — for children and families in developing countries.

Every gift from the catalogue will change a life, so you can choose the present that’s most meaningful to you to give knowing it will meet a critical need, said a World Vision news release.

A recent survey indicated 60 per cent of Albertans feel there is nothing they need for Christmas, yet 89 per cent enjoy giving gifts. 66 per cent are more likely to give a charitable gift versus 58 per cent of Canadians overall.

Buses from Red Deer Catholic School Division were filled thanks to the generosity of Sylvan Lake area residents. Organizer Wayne Stade estimated over $3,000 worth of food and cash was collected. There were also a number of toys for the Christmas Bureau. Ice fishing season underway; report of 5-12 inches of ice

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Winter has certainly set in and with it the ubiquitous ice huts are sprouting over all the favourite fishing holes.

Once again, Sylvan Lake Management Committee is promoting its ‘Take It Off!’ campaign and asking anglers to register their ice fishing huts.

“Registration allows for increased protection of property and our beautiful Sylvan Lake,” said a media release issued last week.

You only need to register a structure once, so registrants are asked to keep record of their reg-

istration number from year to year. “This ensures a proper investigation of property should it fall victim to theft or vandals,” said the release. “Registration also helps officials contact owners in the spring if the structure is found abandoned on the lake after Mar. 31, the last day of the ice fishing season.”

To register, fill out a simple form that identifies contents of the structure, users and contact information. Forms are available at Sylvan Lake town hall, Lacombe County office and Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment.

Online registration is available at sylvanlake. ca/take-it-off.

Last year just a few huts were left on the lake at the end of the season, a vast improvement

from a few years ago. That’s also an indication that the message is getting through to responsible users.

If huts are abandoned on the lake during the spring thaw, debris can include wood, gasoline, furniture and plastic that ends up settling to the bottom of the lake, or floating to the surface.

“Careless disregard for the lake and for others results in serious contamination of the water, which is detrimental to fish and waterfowl habitat and creates safety hazards for other users of the lake,” said the release from Beverly Anderson.

Among the pictures were those showing vehicles on the lake while others cautioned they weren’t going to drive through the slush which is under the snow, but would instead walk to their huts. One report stated there’s between 5-12” of ice and some flood water in areas.

Another internet search found someone renting ice fishing huts on the lake. Sounds like quite a set up. “Gas and stove furnaces in huts.

Apartment vacancy rate pegged at 4.9 per cent; up from 1.1 per cent last year The rates for two bedroom units now average $908, one bedroom units increased to an average of $666

Higher demand and low vacancy rates supported increased rental rates in many of Alberta’s bigger communities, including Sylvan Lake.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s October rental market survey indicated average rents have increased 21.5 per cent for two bedroom apartments in

Sylvan Lake. Rents for one bedroom units edged up an average of three per cent.

(These rates were calculated by this reporter. A separate page in the survey indicates the percentage change of average rent was “suppressed to protect confidentiality or data was not statistically reliable”.)

The rates for two bedroom units now average $908, compared to $747 at the time of the last survey. One bedroom units increased from an average of $646 in October 2012 to $666 in October this year.

However vacancy rates also increased in Sylvan Lake. There’s a 5.6 per cent vacancy rate for two bedroom apartments, up from 1.4 per cent a year earlier. Overall, the town’s vacancy rate was pegged at 4.9 per cent, up from 1.1 per cent in October 2012.

Calculations for Sylvan Lake’s statistics were based on one bachelor unit, 33 one bedroom units, 213 two bedroom apartments, and 20 three bedroom apartments in 2013. All are in buildings with three or more units.

According to the report, the apartment vacancy rate in Alberta’s urban centres was 1.6 per cent in October 2013, down from two per cent the previous October.

“Employment growth and an influx of migrants were the primary contributors to the decline in vacancies.”

The vacancy rate in Red Deer increased to 1.9 per cent in this year’s survey from 1.2 per cent in October 2012.

- The outdoor ice block Christmas tree in front of the Chilibeck home at 5024-47A Avenue, was a work of dedication. “It took lots of hours, lots of food colouring and much co-operation from Mother Nature,” wrote Laurie Chilibeck. “It looks better at night in the dark. Lights go on at 5 p.m. My husband Dan started in November with six square buckets in the freezer. Finally Mother Nature co-operated and we were able to start freezing them outside. Sometimes they would take longer to freeze if the temperatures were milder.” The creation now includes 62 blocks.

“This is not just a single year of good results — this is a continuous improvement across many of the categories over the past few years,” said Colleen Butler, Board of Education Chair. “This level of achievement is the result of hard work by staff and students across the division, and we are very proud.”

The percentage of Chinook’s Edge students completing high school is now 78.2 per cent, up from the record-setting 77.7 per cent from last year and well above the provincial average of 74.5 per cent.

These are some of the findings in the recentlyreleased Accountability Pillar, which is a public results report from Alberta Education.

“Schools across Chinook’s Edge are working on this as a priority and there are many projects underway to support the increase we see in the number of students completing high school,” said Superintendent Kurt Sacher. “We are proud of the hard work being accomplished in all of our schools, across all the grades, that is directly impacting student achievement. High School completion is the result of years of quality learning, from the minute our students enter Kindergarten to the time they graduate. We’re very pleased with this evidence that our focus on achievement is setting our students up for success in school — and in life.”

Ideas sought on how to celebrate Confederation’s 150th anniversary

Let your mind loose to spiral this way and that as you consider how you’d like to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

The anniversary, in 2017, is “an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate our shared history and values, which have helped us forge the greatest country in the world,” said MP Earl Dreeshen.

“We have a strong historical knowledge in our region and I look forward to hearing from individuals and organizations on what they view as the key aspects that have shaped our lives.”

Dreeshen plans to host a consultation with museums, historical associations and municipalities next month. It will be part of a network of roundtable discussions that are taking place across Canada in coming months.

“We want a celebration that reflects who we are as Canadians, where we came from, and what we can give back,” he said. “Canada 150 will be an occasion to build and strengthen the nation and to engage Canadians in shaping our future.”

Constituents interested in shaping the 150th anniversary celebrations are encouraged to send ideas to Dreeshen at earl.dreeshen.c1@parl.gc.ca or complete an online questionaire at Canada. ca/150.

- Sharon Graham, chairperson of the Poppy Campaign for the Sylvan Lake branch of The Royal Canadian Legion, presented a $3,000 cheque to Bethany Sylvan Lake, accepted by Gayladawne Hobbs, Care Service Manager, Tuesday.

The money was designated towards purchase of a specialized tub/ lift which is valued at approximately $43,700. The Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary has previously donated $3,000 towards the project.STEVE DILLS

Family skating party to conclude a year of celebration

The whole town’s invited to help cap a tremendous Centennial Year during the final event on the evening of Dec. 31st.

“We’ve had a pretty good year, very successful events,” said Centennial Celebrations chairperson Brenda Dale. “To wrap it all up the committee is hosting a family skating party at the old arena.”

“All famillies, young and old, are invited,” she said.

Midnight will be at 9 p.m. so families with

young children can participate in the festivities and get home at a reasonable hour. The event runs from 6-10 p.m. and features crafts, entertainment, surprises and a chance to skate and visit.

It will also be the last time to taste Sylvan Lake’s Centennial birthday cake. “We’ve had lots of it this year,” quipped Dale.

Besides cake, your $5 family pass also includes hot dogs and hot chocolate.

A limited number of tickets are available at Sylvan Lake & Area Community Partners office, 4936 50th Avenue, so hurry to get yours and participate in the finale of a great year of celebration.

- The Sacred Massed Choir, directed by Kerry Heisler, provided enjoyable entertainment to over 600 people during two concerts at Sylvan Lake Alliance Church Dec. 1. Veterans involved in D-Day, liberation of France sought for French award

As part of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the landings in Normandy and Provence, France during World War II, France wishes to honour the veterans who took part in these operations.

The Sylvan Lake branch of The Royal Canadian Legion is looking for any surviving veterans and is willing to help them complete nomination forms which need to be submitted before Dec. 31st.

Some of these veterans will be nominated to or promoted within the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the highest decoration that France can bestow, said a letter from the Ambassador of France in Canada.

“In order to compile the corresponding dossiers, the Embassy will identify … veterans who took part in combat or military landing operations, or the liberation of France. Canadian or foreign decorations already held by veterans may represent useful criteria for selection,” stated the letter.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has agreed to support this initiative and we encourage you to participate by nominating candidates for this prestigious decoration, said a letter from the federal department.

Dossiers must be sent to Veterans Affairs Canada for verification before Dec. 31 and will subsequently be sent to the Embassy of France.

Rush to lead Olympic mens’ bobsleigh team as pilot of Canada 1

“A star-studded line-up of 16 medal-winning athletes” was

“Canada will be fronted by veteran bobsleigh Olympians with podium experience,” proclaimed the Olympics Canada website after Monday’s official announcement

Hockey teams filled Christmas shoeboxes for needy children

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Christmas will be made much brighter this year for children around the world, thanks to donations made by teams participating in the Eckville Eagles Novice hockey tournament last month.

Together, the eight teams filled 68 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, which distributes them to needy youths around the world.

Sylvan Lake All About Bouncing Novice 3 Lakers were awarded pizzas for donating the highest amount of shoeboxes, with a total of 19.

“Families were more than happy to help out, and they had lots of fun doing it,” said team manager

Corrine Olineck.

“Hopefully they’ll keep doing it in years to come.”

More than one shoebox was received for each of the team’s 16 players, with some families donating several.

Olineck said donating not only gave players and their families the chance to improve Christmas for children in need, but also taught them valuable lessons about giving.

“They learned that it’s not all about them, and that it’s good to help other kids around the world.”

Each year, organizers of the tournament choose a different charity to receive donations from participating teams. The food bank is often chosen, but organizers were told this year

Bronze medal-winning pilot Rush will lead the 12 men on the team.

Rush will be joined by two of his three former bronze medal teammates, Dave Bissett and Lascelles Brown. They’ll be joined by Olympic competitor Neville Wright on Team Rush.

Chris Spring will pilot Canada 2. The team includes Olympic competitor Jesse Lumsden along with Olympic rookies Cody Sorenson and Ben Coakwell.

Spring competed at Vancouver 2010 for his native Australia.

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Red Deer County councillors approved capital and operating budgets for 2014 during their regular meeting Tuesday.

A sole amendment was made to the budget drafted earlier this month, with

$500,000 added for snow plowing.

That funding is the result of “the larger amount of snow at this point in the winter”, according to a county release.

Final operating budget was approved at $42,200,981, and capital at $21,828,169.

The latter dropped by more than $4 million, due to a decrease in the number of

large-scale projects.

In the release, Mayor Jim Wood said council was “very happy” with the budget.

“We feel this will allow us to carry on the high levels of service to our ratepayers without a significant impact on taxes.”

Director of Corporate Services Heather Gray also voiced her approval.

“The budget is both sensible and aggressive in terms of balancing services with costs,” she said. “Ratepayers will be pleased to know the county remains in a healthy financial position.”

The weather was a balmy 0˚C last Nov. 29, which encouraged what we’d estimate was a record sized crowd to line the parade route in anticipation of the arrival of Santa Claus.

Members of the Interact Club at École H. J. Cody High School joined Rotarians in collecting money along the parade route for Sylvan Lake Food Bank Nov. 29. Among those collecting were Interact members Emma Villeneuve, Kyndall Cutforth and Zoey Rodin. The groups collected $1,313 thanks to the generosity of a large crowd of people gathered to watch the parade.
