A Vancouver developer has extended nine option-to-purchase agreements for Agricultural Land Reserve properties near the Roberts Bank superport which he hopes to turn into industrial real estate.

Ron Emerson of the industrial consortium Emerson Real Estate Group extended all but two options set to expire Nov. 30 on 240 hectares of farmland.

Located adjacent to rail lines servicing Deltaport the consortium–composed of railway companies CN and CP, Western Stevedoring, and international port consultant Carrix–would build an intermodal yard four kilometres in length to load and unload trains which are roughly the same length.

But in order to do that, Emerson would need to convince both municipal council and the Agricultural Land Commission of the need to destroy farmland.

“The option-to-purchase extensions come as no surprise,” said Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. “The developer has drawn

out the agreements for another year in the hopes that either the port or the province will hand him keys to steamroll over the Agricultural Land Reserve.”

Huntington called for action in Victoria last year urging the province to oppose the industrial speculation of farmland.

Previous remarks made by Delta Council regarding the proposal indicate Emerson would find no

support there either, but Coun.

Ian Paton said that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.

“That’s the scary thing about the whole deal is that no matter how adamantly opposed our municipal government is against it, or even the land commission, sometimes you get overruled by the federal port authority to go ahead with the expansion of Deltaport.” ❙ Continued on A4

Delta council has deferred a motion to request a comprehensive, independent health impact assessment on a proposed coal handling facility in Surrey, pending a staff report which was not ready in time for Monday’s meeting.

The motion on Fraser Surrey Docks comes from Delta’s own environment advisory committee, but a staff report won’t be available to council until the next scheduled meeting on Dec. 16.

“I must say from my perspective, normally the council would have a report that comes with a motion, particularly of this magnitude.”

She said that other than Coun.

Bruce McDonald, who is the environment advisory committee chair, nobody on council has heard comments made at those meetings.

McDonald said despite the delay in receiving the report, he believes a health assessment needs to take place.

“I am prepared to wait for the recommendation from staff on who

should do it, what extent it should be, and where that should come from.”

Coun. Ian Paton said the municipality has received hundreds of emails about the coal port from residents, and that council takes the matter seriously.

“My farm has been right next to the railway tracks going through East Delta since 1969 so I know plenty about coal trains going past in my neighbourhood,” he said.

“But I do agree with Her Worship that we’ve got staff working hard right now bringing some of the answers forward to us.”

Paton said council still doesn’t

know who would pay for an independent health assessment, particularly given the project affects the entire region.

“Should Delta foot the bill for a health impact assessment which is going to answer questions for all of Metro Vancouver, including Surrey and Langley and New Westminster and everybody?”

After close to four years of construction, the long-awaited opening of the 40-km, $1.26 billion South Fraser Perimeter Road in South Delta is nearly at hand, but there will be a few final delays before that happens.

According to the Ministry of Transportation website, Highway 17A through Ladner will be closed beginning on Sunday, Dec. 15 with the opening of the SFPR. The detour will be in place until Thursday, Dec. 19. During that time, drivers wishing to access Highway 99 to the Massey Tunnel via Tsawwassen or the Ferry Terminal will now drive onto the new SFPR highway at the 28th Avenue onramp.

Meanwhile, access from the north to the south will use the new SFPR interchange at Highway 99 at the sign reading “Exit 26.”

For those people who are going to local areas in Ladner or along Ladner Trunk Road, drivers are being asked to use Arthur Drive or the Deltaport Way as access.

When the SFPR is opened, the highway will be named 17 and the existing one renamed to 17A. As well, on Monday Delta Council approved the expenditures of $50,000 to install two signs along 17/17A to promote Ladner Village and Tsawwassen. The approval is conditional upon the signs being designed to Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure standards, including base design, breakaway connections and reflectivity. The sign leading to Tsawwassen will ask northbound drivers leaving the ferry to turn right on 56th Street, while the sign leading to Ladner will ask drivers to turn left on Ladner Trunk Road.

Organizers behind a group opposed to a five-tower radio array being built in Point Roberts are nearly halfway to meeting their fundraising goal to hire a world-class law firm.

American Suzanne Rosser, who runs the Stop the Radio Towers email list and is a contributor to the website notowers.webs.com, said this week that her group has raised $18,000 of the estimated $40,000 needed to retain a legal firm in Washington, D.C. Rosser said the Point Roberts Taxpayers Association and Point Roberts Conservation Society have been accepting do-

nations on the American side of the border with the expectation that the issue will eventually wind up in the courts.

“These donations would be collected to pay for our two specialized lawyers, one for Whatcom County Hearing and the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] hearings,” she explained.

“Our FCC lawyer in Washington, D.C. is $800 per hour and the land use lawyer in Bellingham, Wash. is closer to $300 per hour. “ Rosser said she expects the proponent behind the radio towers, KRPI Radio (owned by BBC Broadcasting, Inc. and operated under a local marketing agreement by Sher-E-Punjab

Radio Broadcasting Inc.) will spare no expense in meeting their challenge in court.

But despite raising $18,000, she hesitates to talk about a halfway milestone.

“The issue here is we don’t know how much it’s going to cost us, so we don’t really know what the halfway mark really is,” she said. “Lawyers are expensive.”

Rosser also organized the Dec. 1 crossborder demonstrations in an attempt to unite residents on both sides of the border against the project.

“We feel the demonstration was quite successful and there were almost 300 people on the Point Roberts side during the day,” she said, adding there

were about 100 people on the Tsawwassen side.

The application from KRPI radio currently located in Ferndale, Wash., is to relocate and install a five-tower radio array at McKenzie Way and Tyee Drive in Point Roberts, and broadcast at a signal strength of 50 kilowatts.

The FCC granted approval for the plan earlier this year, but is now before the Whatcom Planning Committee, which won’t make a decision until 2014.

Paton said another concern with the core review underway in the provincial government is that an overhaul of the Agricultural Land Commission could water down protection for farmland.

As well, Paton said local governments across Canada are worried about changes to federal legislation that would make it easier for First Nations to take lands from the municipal tax base.

But Emerson said there’s “not a chance” of working with the Tsawwassen First Nation on the project.

“I don’t want to say anything negative about the Tsawwassen but their ability to execute and do business is–I mean, they’re trying hard and I hope they’re successful–but it’s all

new to them.”

Emerson said he couldn’t speak to specifics because of a confidentiality agreement but did say the project was necessary for the industrial needs of the Lower Mainland.

“We understand people’s concerns about the ALR but it’s a matter of education and doing the right thing in the right location,” he said.

Emerson said he remembers when Charles Grosvenor owned all of Annacis Island from 1955 until 1986 when a bridge ushered in an industrial park that is now one of the most valuable industrial real estate parks in Western Canada.

As a real estate broker back then Emerson said he sold 60 hectares in 13 months. At the time, the Greater Vancouver

Regional District estimated that would supply the industrial needs of the region for 15 to 20 years.

The industrial shortage today has been in part due to Burnaby and Richmond converting their lands into residential and commercial districts, said Emerson. Richmond, in particular, had a successful industrial sector but much like its farmland most has been paved over with houses and big box stores.

Another problem has been the BC Assessment Authority valuing land based on nearby properties, making it impossible for industrial tenants to afford lease rates.

The growing shortage of industrial lands and pressures to redevelop existing industrially-zoned properties has led

Port Metro Vancouver CEO Robin Silvester to suggest the creation of an industrial land reserve.

The time is also ripe for industrial growth, given the imminent opening of the province’s Gateway project, the South Fraser Perimeter Road, designed to better service the port, which has filed an application for a federal environmental assessment for Terminal 2.

“I think Delta has an incredible opportunity to look at the overall land inventory, make some good decisions, utilize the South Fraser Perimeter Road, and they’re going to have jobs, they’re going to have the tax base, and if they embrace the opportunity they’re going to be in incredible shape,” said Emerson.

thermal coal along the BNSF railway line through White Rock, North Delta, and then a deep sea terminal on the Fraser River in Surrey. The coal would then be barged to Texada Island where it would be loaded onto deep sea vessels to transport to China.

Delta farmers to benefit from $4.3M agrifoods program

The federal and provincial governments are chipping in $4.3 million to support B.C. agrifoods producers exporting to new international marketplaces, and Delta farmers stand to profit from the move.

The second phase of the Growing Forward program now includes seafood for the first time, and will provide matching funds to support industry participation at international tradeshows, promotional events, and develop marketing materials for international audiences.

Christina Burridge, executive director of the BC Seafood Alliance, knows how important it is to promote agrifood on an international level.

“To get seafood included, particularly given that seafood ac-

counts for two-thirds of B.C.’s agrifoods exports, is actually a pretty good deal,” she said.

Burridge said the governments of most seafood-producing countries already provide marketing support to help them get into new export markets.

“So, this is just a fairly modest, but nice, redressing the balance a little bit.”

Burridge said cost-sharing programs aimed at marketing agrifoods is ultimately beneficial for both food producers and the economy.

The U.S. is still the biggest market for farmed seafood, while Japan and China remain the largest wild seafood markets in the world. Burridge said they’re hoping Canada can secure a deal with South Korea in 2014,

while Canada’s recently negotiated free trade deal with the European Union opens up the door to smoked salmon exports.

Linda Delli Santi, executive director of the BC Vegetable Marketing Commission and a former greenhouse grower, also welcomed the program.

“To make more money you have to move more product. To move more product you need new markets.”

Greenhouse growers have been trying to get peppers into Japan for 20 years but have had trouble getting around Japanese food inspectors concerned about importing plant-based viruses. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has been trying to help growers convince Japan the food is safe, but Delli Santi said the federal government needs to do more to convince other nations as well.

“I think in particular food items, more so than steel or lumber, there are those

concerns that they’re afraid you might import something you don’t want,” she said.

The greenhouse sector in the Lower Mainland tends to export 60 or 70 per cent of its product outside of B.C. with the bulk of it headed for the U.S. Delli Santi said brands like Windset Farms or BC Hot House are the licensed agencies looking for new markets and not the individual greenhouse growers in Delta who move their produce to those distributors.

“B.C. blueberries are the number one fruit export from B.C. and this new export program will be beneficial to our growers and enable competitive and

sustainable access in the target markets in China, Japan, India, southwest Asia and the EU,” said BC Blueberry Council executive director Debbie Etsell.

According to Ministry of Agriculture’s Agricultural Land Use Inventory for Delta, berries cover 1,241 hectares, or 13 per cent. Between 2002 and 2010, blueber-

ries accounted for the highest rate of growth of any agrifood, with export demands pushing production 253 per cent in that time.

The Growing Forward 2 program aims to build on the $2.5 billion of agrifood products B.C. exports to more than 130 countries annually by supporting B.C. producers, businesses and

associations to promote their products to international buyers.

The $3-billion Growing Forward 2 program runs from 2013 to 2018, which includes $2 billion in cost-sharing on a 60/40 basis for programs delivered by provinces and territories, as well as $1 billion for federal-only strategic initiatives.

When Blackbeard has downed his last bottle of rum and drifted off to Davy Jones’ Locker, what happens to his faithful shoulder-sitting parrot?

It’s a question that any bird owner should be asking himself or herself, since exotic birds have lifespans that rival, and sometimes exceed, that of their human companions.

In fact, the average parrot will live to 95 years in the wild, and up to 75 years in captivity. That means an adult buying a young parrot in a pet store will likely die long before it will.

And if there’s nobody to care for the bird, chances are it will wind up at Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary in Tsawwassen where the bird is left puzzled at its new surroundings.

Jenny Tamas, who has been volunteering with Greyhaven for 10 years, says people buy birds without really knowing anything about them.

“They get them and they don’t realize they’re going to live 30, 40, 50 years,” she says.

“And it’s a huge commitment.”

Tamas takes Ariel out of her cage and hugs the 12-year-old macaw gently. Nearby in her own cage is 26-year-old Coco, another macaw who doesn’t quite like so much affection (she bites).

All parrots have dif-

ferent personalities, explains Tamas. Cody, a 40-year-old African grey, squawks out, “It’s time for beer.” His previous owner kept him in a cage and never let him out.

The popular African grey and macaw parrots are purchased by people who like the idea of a bird that talks, but soon grow tired of the noise and get rid of them. Tamas says most long-living birds will have an average of seven different owners.

She says people don’t realize the birds can be destructive to furniture, are loud, and can get nervous habits that require veterinary care. They are then passed from home to home using social sites like Craigslist and Kijiji.

Tamas says most people will call Greyhaven and the first question will be about the biggest birds.

“I’ll ask what kind they’re looking for and they’ll say, I don’t know, give me the biggest you’ve got.”

That’s a red flag for Greyhaven, which aims to find the perfect home for discarded birds, most of which come from owner surrender. The shelter took in over 218 birds in 2012 and adopted out 182, accepting surrenders from as far as Hope and parts of Vancouver Island.

are usually bred in captivity and sold by pet stores or bird marts.

Parrots, cockatiels, canaries and budgerigars are all common impulse buys for people looking for a pet that they think is low maintenance.

The budgerigar, or “budgie,” is the world’s most common “throwaway bird” according to Tamas, because they are the cheapest parrot money can buy and they can often learn to vocalize words and sentences.

Tamas says Greyhaven receives a lot of cockatiels and other small birds when seniors go into care homes.

Greyhaven was started 17 years ago by a couple who only took in small birds like budgies and canaries. But then they got an African grey parrot and it not only changed the name but the outlook of the rescue.

The non-profit is now composed of dozens of volunteers with five members who sit on its board of directors.

Tamas donates hours each day to feeding the birds, cleaning up after them, and showing them love and attention.

“We just have all committed because we love the birds and someone has to look after them.”

including a home visit to determine suitability. It’s during that visit that Tamas will sometimes identify hazards to the bird, such as a large pet with predato-

ry instincts.

Tamas urges potential adopters to research before buying a bird so they’re not abandoned later.

The most emotional

part of her job is letting the birds go to a family with the hope it will be treated right.

“A little piece of yourself goes with each one of them,” she says. “The

nice part is when you find somebody who loves their bird.

Access from the north will be through the new SFPR interchange at Highway 99 (look for Exit 26) just southeast of the existing Highway 17 interchange near the Town and Country Inn. Drivers are requested to please watch for and obey all detour signs.

The local optometrist is responsible for improving the eyesight for thousands of residents and recently celebrated 30 years practicing in Tsawwassen.

During that span, she has seen the community grow up around her.

“I’m now having the bifocal conversation with patients I’ve known since they were teenagers,” says Hansen.

Hansen, herself, grew up in Manitoba to Danish parents and studied optometry at the University of Waterloo, graduating in 1979. A friend living in Tsawwassen suggested she come out west, as the community

Over the past three decades Hansen has made Tsawwassen her home, and has spent considerable time and effort giving back to the community.

Hansen is a charter member of the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, and sits on the board of the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, as well as the Delta Police Board.

“I’ve always wanted to be at the table when a decision is being made so I can have my voice heard, rather than be dictated to,” she says. “My way might not be the way we go with, but at least I’ve had my say.”

Not surprisingly, Hansen says politics is something that interests her, once she retires, of course.

“But I’ve still got a few more years left,” she says. “I think 2020 would be a good year to retire.”

consuming a small amount of alcohol an hour and half prior to the collision.

As a result, the driver was given a 24-hour roadside suspension and her driver’s license seized. The owner of the vehicle, the mother of the driver, was contacted and advised her vehicle had extensive damage and had been towed.

T

he Christmas season is upon us and that means endless hours spent battling big box shopping mall chaos looking for the perfect gift for our loved ones.

For many Ladner and Tsawwassen residents, it will undoubtedly mean a trip across the river into Richmond, or down the highway into Surrey to get the shopping done. Others will opt to order their gifts online.

The allure of cheap goods and one-stop shopping is understandable.

However, spending our hard-earned dollars in far flung municipalities does this community a disservice.

The business owners of Ladner and Tsawwassen are our neighbours, our friends, and even our family. And when we spend our dollars at local stores, we ensure those dollars are in turn circulated throughout our community, benefitting everyone.

These businesses pay taxes, which help pay to pave our roads and tend our parks.

They employ local residents, who in turn spend their pay cheques locally.

Local businesses also offer much-needed services close to home.

These same businesses also help organize and pay for the many Christmas events we’ve come to know and love here in South Delta, such as the Ladner Business Association’s annual Christmas tree lighting, Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall’s Wake Up Santa event, and the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association’s Christmas lights display.

As such, the success of local businesses is tied closely to the success of our community as a whole.

Shopping close to home can save you time and money as well, since you won’t be using as much gas driving out of town, nor having to pay for parking.

It may be tempting to drive into Richmond or Surrey for your shopping needs, or cross the border into Point Roberts and pick up gifts ordered off the Internet.

But this Christmas, shop close to home and support our community.

Your neighbours will thank you.

don’t believe in God. Never have, never will.

I could go into a long-winded explanation of how I came to this conclusion, but there’s no need.

Everybody who has lived more than a few moments on this planet has heard the religion argument and nothing I could say would make a difference at this point. In many ways we atheists are a lot like most of our religious neighbours. We go about quietly doing our thing and we don’t try and convert anybody else to our point of view.

Few people know I’m an atheist because I don’t go about telling people. And that’s the way it should be, really. Your beliefs are your own and you don’t need to force them on others.

Which is why it bothers me that an atheist group in Vancouver is trying so desperately to post up anti-religious billboards to convert the believers

and agnostics. The Centre for Inquiry Canada is complaining that their ads for Pattison Outdoor billboards were rejected recently and are considering filing a human rights complaint in response.

The rejected advert shows a stock photo of a smiling woman holding a cup of coffee with a biblical font reading, “Jenn 13:1. Praying won’t help. Doing will.”

You know what doesn’t help? Self-righteous billboards plastered around Vancouver during a Christian season of celebration.

The only thing worse than somebody foisting their religion in your face like some kind of telemarketer calling just as your hot dinner is on the table is an atheist trying to turn unbelief into a belief system.

Atheism is anti-theism. We don’t know what others think about God, and frankly we don’t care.

Lehigh plant will foul FVRD air quality

Re: FVRD concerns ring hollow, Editorial, Dec. 6, 2013.

While I am pleased the South Delta Leader has opened up discourse on Metro Vancouver’s additional incinerator proposal that will affect our health, will impact our environment and will be funded at a cost of $500 million to Metro Vancouver tax payers, I am also dismayed as the editorial is a bit of a head scratcher. Not only was it riddled with factually incorrect statements but to my surprise the community newspaper appeared purposeful in its character assassination of the Fraser Valley Regional District. Therefore, on behalf of the FVRD, I present the editor of the South Delta Leader and readers with the facts.

Firstly, it is hypocritical to chastise the FVRD for open burning. FVRD restrictions for electoral areas are no less restrictive than Metro Vancouver’s. Municipalities such as Chilliwack and Abbotsford are far more restrictive than Mayor Jackson’s municipality, which

has open burning year round unless there is a ban in place by the Coastal Fire Centre. The City of Vancouver does not allow open burning but other municipalities in Metro Vancouver observe open burning even during the summer months when air quality is the worst, whereas most of FVRD municipalities restrict it at those times. As an example, in Abbotsford there is a burning ban from May until September in rural areas and all year in urban areas. Neither Metro Vancouver nor the FVRD have a ban on wood stoves. They are no more common in FVRD than in Metro Vancouver. This is definitely something both regions need to address, but it is not an excuse to burn garbage, which is not a 21st century solution.

Secondly, the claim that incinerating garbage instead of coal at the Lehigh Cement Plant would not create additional air emissions is simply erroneous. The FVRD acknowledges that the burning of coal pollutes our airshed, but substituting that with incinerating garbage is not the solution. If all emissions are counted, burning garbage is worse than burning coal. As for the use of ash

our energies in the pursuits we actually enjoy.

By taking atheism and turning it into an organization that accepts donations and plasters up billboards and tries to convert other people into accepting “the truth,” this group is becoming the thing it claims not to be: A religion.

It isn’t for me to convince others to believe or not believe in God. That’s their own journey and choice. Leave each person to find God or the infinite nothingness on their own and save the preaching for the fundamentalists in Alabama and Afghanistan.

Lastly, the assertion that FVRD is largely responsible for pollution in the airshed is again erroneous. The facts are that 59 per cent of smog-forming pollutants come from Metro Vancouver, 25 per cent from Whatcom County and 16 per cent is generated from within the FVRD. While the FVRD is indeed a provincial transportation corridor, roads within Metro Vancouver carry significantly more traffic. The FVRD’s population increased by 37,000 people this past decade, while Metro Vancouver’s increased by 330,000.

Seven swans a-swimming

A

n old carol, the 12 Days of Christmas, sings of “seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying.”

Delta is the wintering area for many swans and geese, attracted by the estuarine marshes and water-logged farm fields. Most of these waterfowl are Pacific flyway migrants, and retaining habitat for them should be an environmental priority.

Three swan species can be found locally. The magnificent Trumpeter Swans are the largest of all waterfowl. Close to extinction at one time, they have now made a successful come back and several thousand spend the winter in southern British Columbia. Tundra Swans, sometimes called Whistling Swans, are much less common here. A few are spotted among the Trumpeter flocks each year. The third member of the swan family, the Mute Swan, is an orange-billed introduction from Europe.

It is resident in Ladner and a few other areas.

Swans and Snow Geese may be confused: both are big, white birds. Swans fly with long outstretched necks, whereas Snow Geese have black wing tips and form V-shaped skeins. Both feed on sedge roots, stubble and abandoned potato crops, and are often seen crowded onto agricultural fields.

Their population varies with the weather and

predators, such as Arctic Foxes. In the last few years, Mother Nature has been kind and survival of young ones has been good. Consequently, huge flocks are present in the delta this winter. Some migrate on to California, although in smaller numbers than formerly, while others form a Skagit - Fraser Delta flock that move between these two river mouths over the course of the winter.

Some Canada Geese migrate through the delta, although the most commonly seen birds are a hybrid race, introduced in the 1900s. They are non-migratory and can be a nuisance bird. Old timers knew many wild races, such as the small Cackling Goose and the dark Dusky Goose. The rather similar, Greater White-fronted Goose, another northern migrant, is an uncommon visitor. Along with Tundra Swans, it was market hunted in the early days of European settlement. Populations may now be recovering; this fall a flock of over fifty birds stopped at Boundary Bay. Brant differ from other geese by feeding offshore, not on land. Most winter in Baja California, but some stay in Boundary Bay, grazing on eelgrass. In spring they head north, to nest in the everlasting daylight of the Arctic islands.

40 years of change at SDSS

The future has never looked brighter for South Delta Secondary School as it celebrates four decades of education

S

tudents fill the halls of South Delta Secondary School, as they hurriedly make their way from class to locker to class. Every year, the faces and fashions in these hallways change as a new generation comes and goes.

The building itself, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has also undergone near-constant change. Over the past four decades, South Delta Secondary School has seen all manner of additions, demolitions, renovations and upgrades, resulting in a building that bears little resemblance to the one that first opened its

doors to the public in 1973.

“I love the fact that this is a place that changes,” says art teacher Julie Lymburner.

She started out teaching at South Delta Secondary School back in 1980, when it consisted of a separate junior and senior high school.

“I was at Tsawwassen Junior High in those days, and that building was on the other side of the oval,” she says.

The two schools shared a cafeteria and sports field, before being amalgamated as a single secondary school in 1992. The old junior high was eventually demol-

ished and the land sold off, the proceeds of which went to expanding the remaining wing in 2005.

The school is currently undergoing a $10.2 million upgrade to its original 1973 classroom block, science block, library and shops. The project includes seismic upgrades to the entire building and the renovation of existing science labs.

Construction started this past summer and is expected to be complete by October 2014.

The renovations are already beginning to take shape with the opening of the

school’s new science lab last month, offering students and teachers an open learning space complete with the latest science equipment.

The lab combines what was four traditional classrooms into a large flexible space that would be the envy of many colleges, and is more than capable of handling any sort of high school science lesson.

“It’s really cool to look at, and it’s great to have full size work benches,” says Grade 12 student Katie Baillie of the new lab. “It’s so much more organized and easier to do experiments now.”

Lymburner’s art classroom will be one of the many rooms renovated as part of the ongoing work on the school. For her, the constant change has been blessing, as the SDSS has been able to reinvent itself both physically and educationally, changing with the times to better serve its students.

“The school has grown more comprehensive in what we provide,” she says. “We have continued to provide more electives and courses… to meet the interests of the changing school population.”

The school is currently home to more than 1,300 students, as well as 112 teachers and staff.

And while many other Lower Mainland high schools have suffered from falling enrollment in the past decade, South Delta Secondary School has been able to maintain its student population by opening its doors to international students and high performance athletes. The school also offers a variety of performing arts-based academies and sports programs, which attract students from across the school district.

“We have diversity here, thanks to our thriving international program,” Lymburner notes. “We are attracting students from all over the world - from Europe, Asia, South America - and these students are getting involved with the culture of the school.”

That culture is one of participation. The school offers endless avenues for students to pursue their interests beyond the “three Rs.” There is a something for everyone at SDSS, whether it’s extracurricular programs such as the school’s many competitive sports teams, clubs, or student council, or career programs like culinary arts, fashion and design, business, and trades “Students excel here because they can find their niche,” says Lymburner.

SDSS is also home to the Vancouver Giants’ educational program. Players for the locally-based Western Hockey League team finish their high school course work while playing for the team, offering them the flexibility to graduate while traveling with the team.

Having future NHLers walk the halls might be a distraction at other schools, but Lymburner says the Giants players are all part of the SDSS family, and set a positive example for the other students.

“The work ethic they have on the ice you see in the responsibility they take for their work,” she says.

“They are living their dream, and we want to support them in that.”

Despite 40 years of change, there are some constants, Lymburner notes.

The dedication of the staff and their ability to adapt

with the times has been chief among them.

“I’m now teaching the kids of the kids I taught in 1980s… so a lot of things have changed in that time,” Lymburner says. “But the professional development here has always been second to none, so we do our best to learn and grow.”

Teachers have gone from banning cellphones to using them as a learning devices.

“Teachers are excited about new things,” she says. “But you still need good classroom management skills.”

Perhaps a testament to the positive effect the school has had on its students is the fact that a handful of the current crop of teachers at SDSS are former students.

Teacher Bobby McDowell has spent a good portion of his life at the school, first as a student from 1993 to 1998, and then as a teacher from 2006 onwards.

As a student, McDowell won a contest to design a new school logo, which now adorns the school’s front foyer. After graduating and finishing his teacher’s training, McDowell said he jumped at the chance to teach at his old high school.

“I loved growing up here and to come back was a big opportunity,” he says.

McDowell admits it was strange at first being back at the school as a teacher. As a fresh-faced recent university graduate, he was occasionally mistaken for a student.

“The first time I walked into the staff room, it felt like I wasn’t supposed to be in there,” he says.

But with the support and mentorship of his fellow teachers, he says he quickly became comfortable in his new role as an art and design teacher.

That welcoming aspect of SDSS extends to the student population as well, he believes.

“This is a school where students can be themselves,” says McDowell. “It’s a very welcoming and accepting place.”

The school is planning a 40th anniversary celebration for May 10, 2014, and former teachers, students, and families of students are invited to join in the festivities slated for the day and the evening.

“We love to see all our old students,” says Lymburner. Ultimately it’s the students who make SDSS the school that it is, year after year. And for Lymburner, like many teachers at the school, it’s what she loves most about teaching there.

“I love the fact that I can work with people who are young and energetic,” she says.

“It doesn’t get any better.”

An online fundraiser has been set up to help the family of six who were displaced by a house fire on 88th Street in East Ladner.

Carlos Jarquin, along with his wife Ruby and four children, Charlie, Shirley, Jasub, and Gary, had been renting the farmhouse and working as a farmhand on the De Boer property for 20 years.

Although everybody survived the Nov. 28 blaze the family lost their two birds and two dogs, Princess and Tiny. Their belongings were also destroyed.

The Delta Ice Hawks suffered their second loss in a row and gave up first place in the Pacific Junior Hockey League on Tuesday, as they fell 2-1 to the visiting North Vancouver Wolf Pack at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

After a scoreless first period, the local junior B hockey club got into penalty trouble in the middle frame, taking five consecutive minor penalties.

The Wolf Pack took advantage of the shorthanded Ice Hawks, scoring one power play goal, as well an evenstrength goal, to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolf Pack outshot the Ice Hawks 17-10 in the second period Tanner Gattinger had the Ice Hawks’ lone goal of the game, which came in the final minute of play. The Ice Hawks pulled goalie Scott Lapp for the extra attacker in the final

30 seconds of the game, but could not tie the game to send it to overtime.

Lapp finished the game with 33 saves on 35 shots, while Gattinger was named the game’s third star.

Evan Grannary picked up the sole assist on Gattinger’s goal.

In all, the Ice Hawks were assessed a total of 52 minutes in penalties, including three 10-minute misconducts to Mark Trotman, David Rudin, and Jackson Beavis.

The Wolf Pack, meanwhile, only received 10 minutes of penalties, giving the Ice Hawks three power play opportunities, on which they failed to score.

The loss comes on the heels of a 5-4 road defeat to the Aldergrove Kodiaks last Wednesday. Despite scoring more than three goals in a game for the first time since Nov. 9, the Ice Hawks were unable to claw their way back

from a 4-1 first period deficit.

With the pair of losses, the Ice Hawks fall to second in the PJHL with 39 points, one point behind the Kodiaks. The Ice Hawks’ 18-7-3 record is still good for first place in the Tom Shaw Conference, however, the Richmond Sockeyes are nipping at their heels, one point behind with a record of 18-8-2.

The Ice Hawks are back in action on the road to take on their crosstown rivals, the North Delta Devils, at Sungod Arena this Saturday at 7:15 p.m. The Ice Hawks return home this Tuesday, Dec. 17, to take on the Port Moody Panthers at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Tour de Delta women’s road race gets UCI designation ❙ Staff writer news@southdeltaleader.com

Cycling’s international governing body, Union Cycliste International (UCI), has officially upgraded the 2014 Women’s White Spot Delta Road Race to a 1.2 UCI sanctioned event.

“The Corporation of Delta is very excited to have the Women’s White Spot | Delta Road Race become a UCI 1.2 sanctioned event and join the men’s race on the international cycling calendar,” said Delta Mayor Lois E. Jackson. “Delta is a community that encourag-

es active healthy living and fair play, therefore, the inclusion of the women’s race was a natural step for us to support.”

With international sanctioning and awarding of official UCI points, the road race will draw a deeper, stronger field of top professional cyclists from all over the world to the already well attended three event Tour de Delta and the rest of the nine race BC Superweek series to be held in July 2014. UCI officials attended and closely examined last year’s race before awarding the certification.

“The Tour de Delta, along with all BC Superweek events, are committed to enhance the sport of cycling and provide the opportunity for local athletes to compete against some of the best athletes in North America and the world,” added White Spot Delta Road Race Director Mark Ernsting. “With the inclusion of the women’s race into the UCI calendar, this adds significant profile to the Tour de Delta and overall series of BC Superweek.”

In addition to top professionals, Ernsting expects more national teams to take part in

an effort to earn UCI points, which are used to determine the number of entries each country gets into events like the World Championships and Olympics. Canada is among those expected to field a team.

The Tour de Delta begins the BC Superweek series by hosting three days of racing that consists of the very fast MK Delta Lands Criterium on the evening of Friday, July 4, the Brenco Criterium around an old fishing village on Saturday, July 5 and the White Spot Delta Road Race on the morning of Sunday, July 6.

Shortly after her 95th birthday, joyfully celebrated with family and friends, Isobel contracted pneumonia. She slipped away softy with her son, Peter and daughter-in-law, Kit Grauer by her side.

Born in Glencoe Ontario, Isobel completed her Pharmacy Degree from the University of Toronto in 1940, one of only 6 women in a class of 150. She worked at Saint Michael’s Hospital until she moved with her husband, Grant (1916- 1991), to Burnaby. She lived in the same house on Wellingdon until two years ago when she moved closer to her family.

Filled with compassion and interest in others, Isobel made friends easily and maintained those friendships. She was an active volunteer with All Saint’s Anglican Church in Burnaby and stayed in contact with church and neighborhood friends.

A remarkable woman, admired and loved by all who knew her, she is survived by her son, Peter (Kit), grandsons Taylor and Alexander Scurr, niece Susan Thomas and many friends that have become family.

Isobel’s life will be celebrated with a Service at Saint David’s Anglican Church, Tsawwassen, on Monday December 16, at 11:30am. A reception afterward will be held at her home in Boundary Bay. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
