M

ore than a year ago the relationship between youth at the Port Alberni Friendship Centre and Port Alberni RCMP was guarded at best and mistrustful at worst.

But a year of working together under the Aboriginal Policing Agreement has removed the invisible barrier between the two groups and forced a partnership that is already yielding results.

The initiative is delivered through tripartite policing agreements among the federal government, provincial or territorial governments, and First Nation or Inuit communities.

“The agreement specifies enhanced policing services that communities have called for,” said RCMP Cpl. Jay Donahue, who heads up the aboriginal policing section in Port Alberni.

The section is staffed with one corporal and three police officers.

The section works with the Tseshaht, Hupacasath, Huu-ayaht and Uchucklesaht First Nations, each of which signed separate agreements with the RCMP, as well as letters of expectation specifying what services they want.

The communities have some needs in common but they differ from one another as well. “One community may want us to work on alcohol abuse issues while another may want to work with the crime reduction strategy,” Donahue said.

But aboriginal people don’t just live on the reserves that have aboriginal policing agreements. According to Statistics Canada, more than 3,340 people in Port

The Port Alberni Friendship Centre operates programs and a youth council for urban aboriginal youth. Celestine Andrews started working as a youth enhancement worker just over a year ago.

Working with the friendship centre isn’t part of the aboriginal policing section’s mandate per se, “but it is a centrepiece in the lives of many aboriginal people in the Valley, especially youth,” Donahue said.

The historical relationship between youth at the friendship centre and the police is easy to describe — there wasn’t one.

“The youth were guarded and didn’t want to talk to the police,”

‘A lot of (kids) had bad pasts behind them and they were scared of being labeled troubled youth. They wanted a positive relationship with (RCMP) instead of being scared of them.’

At one of the first youth council meetings she attended, Andrews was surprised to learn that youth wanted a better relationship with the officers they were leery of.

“They wanted a positive relationship with them instead of being scared of them.”

Andrews called the RCMP office, who put her in touch with Donahue.

Working with PAFC youth was a no-brainer, said Donahue. “Youth are an important focus. If you don’t influence them at an early age then you miss the chance at intervening with negative influences.”

Officers regularly attend youth council meetings, as well as participate on youth and family drop-in nights. They also help out with fundraising activities, one of which produced new floor hockey equipment, Andrews said.

“They play basketball, volleyball and now floor

hockey with the youth.”

The consistent interaction over a year has already produced some dividends. “We had some youth who had no respect for staff or for even the building,” Andrews said.

“That’s changed now, and they treat it more like a home—a safe and sober home.”

Kids get a more complete view of officers than they normally would.

“You deal with kids who maybe only ever saw police officers making arrests,” said Const. Peter Batt, who works with the section. “When you interact with them more, then they communicate with you more and that’s huge.”

Donahue has been a police officer for more than 18 years, and has worked in Port Alberni, Campbell River and Hazelton, B.C. Working

with the aboriginal policing section is a change of pace from the trenches of regular policing.

“I oversee three officers, perform different administrative duties and interact with aboriginal communities more than I did,” he said.

This is Donahue’s second stint with Alberni’s aboriginal policing section. He worked here previously in 2008 and came back as its officer in charge in 2012.

Officers who work in the section are drawn from a pool of candidates who have expressed interest.

Section members still assist with regular policing duties, Donahue said.

Batt is one of three constables who works with the aboriginal policing section in Alberni.

Consts. Mike Bigg and Daniel Engle are part of the unit now, and Const.

Scott MacLeod has begun working with the unit in anticipation of replacing a member headed back to general duties.

Constables each bring a different skill set to the table. Batt has worked in Alberni for more than seven years and delivers DARE training, while Const. Dan Engle does baby car seat clinics.

“We rarely work together.

I might do something with Const. Engle this week and Const. Mike Bigg next week and sometimes we’re on our own,” he said.

The aboriginal policing agreement is important because it affords smaller communities the opportunity to access services over and above regular police work, Batt said.

One of the benefits of working in the program is that officers participate in problem solving as opposed to investigatearrest-court-repeat police work.

Athol rebuild goes ahead WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A new apartment building will be built on Athol Street to replace the old one that burned down three years ago.

Port Alberni city council voted to approve a development variance permit that gets the ball rolling for the new building’s construction.

The variances had to do with property

parking, setbacks and balconies, a report from city planner Scott Smith noted.

At four storeys and 24 residential units the new building will be slightly bigger than the previous 26-unit building, which was destroyed by fire in 2011.

The variance will allow for the building to have 24 parking spaces rather than the required 30.

The application is unusual in that the owner is only trying

to replace the old building, Smith noted.

Having said this, the old building was constructed to old building codes when it was first built in 1964.

The new building must comply with new code requirements, the report notes.

n idea prompted by a student at Haa-huu-payak School has turned into a gift to typhoon victims in the Philippines.

Students raised $487 at a bake sale at the school on Dec. 5. The amount will be bolstered with an additional $200 from the school’s board of directors and matching funds from the provincial government, bringing the total amount to $1,374.

The money is meant to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines more than a month ago.

The funds will be donated to the Red Cross in Victoria, who are sending a representative to retrieve it.

“The sense of responsibility and citizenship was amazing. It’s the spirit of giving,” principal Gio Mussato said.

“The children and their families have every reason to be proud.”

Student Adrianna Watts spearheaded

the initiative after becoming aware of the typhoon and its fallout.

Watts discussed the issue with Grade 5-6 teacher Rose Doerksen, and together they planned a community event.

Volunteers made baked goods and treats and advertised the event. Community support was outstanding, Mussato said. On sales day, treats sold for 25 cents a piece.

The initiative was important, Mussato said, because it was a real-life lesson in the fact that we are all

connected.

“We feel each others’ suffering and develop a sense of sharing as a result,” he said.

“You develop a sense of responsibility regardless of race, creed or colour.”

The initiative also coincided with a school exercise that sees them study, discuss and practice one virtue per month.

Ironically, December’s virtue is generosity.

esearchers viewed students from Alberni Indian Residential School as bodies to be experimented on and the school as a laboratory, researcher Ian Mosby said.

“I have an eightmonth-old son.

Imagining him going through something like this is unimaginable,” Mosby said to a crowd of more than 200 at Maht Mahs gym on Wednesday morning.

Former AIRS students came from as far away as Alberta and Northern B.C. to attend a special oneday AIRS Nutritional Experiments Forum, which was hosted by the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council and Tseshaht First Nation.

The event sought to provide information to students about nutritional experiments performed on them by researchers in the 1940s and 1950s.

Now an adjunct professor at Guelph University, Mosby came across the findings at the Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa while he was studying Canada’s nutrition policies during the Second World War. “The documents were discovered by accident and not by someone who was looking for them,” Mosby said. “It begs the question: were there additional experiments in Indian hospitals and residential schools.”

Mosby’s role in the forum was to provide as much information to former students as possible. “We don’t know everything we can know,” he said. “There’s more documents to be found. The feds must step up.”

At AIRS, researchers curtailed students milk intakes to half that of the recommended amount for two years to establish a baseline.

Then, they added extra milk to see what the effects would be.

Researchers monitored students blood, saliva and dental conditions

during the tests.

Students were also denied fluoride during the experiments.

Dental conditions and gingivitis were considered integral to determining nutritional status.

“Any significant dental intervention would interfere with the results of the study,” Mosby said.

At the outset of tests researchers found that the children were already malnourished from poor quality and quantity diets at the schools, Mosby said.

The experiments were conducted without informed consent, and with no thought to ethics, both issues of which were in their infancy stage of development.

Researchers viewed malnourished students as “an opportunity first” rather than an issue requiring medical intervention, Mosby said. “They viewed aboriginal bodies as experimental

materials, and residential schools as labs to further their... agendas,” Mosby said.

The Canadian Red Cross was not involved in the experiments but they did survey residential schools during the experiment period, Mosby said.

In the end, the experiments proved

of little value. Much of the research was never completed.

Some that was published was done so only in minor journals, Mosby said.

were experimented on in Port Alberni.

“I’m amazed at the strength of the people who came here today,” he said. “It must be very difficult for them to be here.”

Mosby said that he was aware of the litany of abuses at the residential schools.

“But I was shocked and horrified by what I found with this,” he said.

“Given the level of abuse though I can’t say I’m surprised that this was allowed to happen.”

The experiments are consistent with the mandate of the day to extinguish aboriginal culture. “But this very event shows that this failed,” Mosby said. “And that’s a testament to the strength of the survivors.”

In a twist, coming to Alberni to speak at the forum is something of a homecoming for Mosby. His father Rod was born in the Alberni Valley but relocated to Castlegar when he was a young man.

The government’s conduct was “immoral if not criminal” Tseshaht chief councillor Hugh Braker said.

The Tseshaht are calling for the government to apologize for the experiments, to fully disclose what happened, provide reparation for it and to underwrite research into the long-term impacts of the experiments, Braker said.

AIRS students were helpless to stop what happened. “If this happened at a private boarding school in Point Grey then there would be an uproar,” he said.

Some STAR pupils are making a difference at Maquinna Elementary School this year.

Three students made a presentation to School District 70 trustees at their meeting on Dec. 10.

The students are participating in an inquiry initiative that all schools in the district are taking on.

At Maquinna, students chose to work on a social justice project called STARS, which stands for safety, teamwork, achievement, respect and share. The initiative is referred to as a STARS code of conduct at the school.

“As a staff we thought it was important to revive the school code of conduct in our school, and actively engage our students in the learning, modelling and teaching processes of doing so,” school principal Darren Homan said.

The initiative actually started in 2012 but has been worked on consistently since, Homan said.

The goal of the project was to teach appropriate school behaviour by strengthening the STARS code of conduct.

behaviour and reduce problematic playground behaviour.

“We asked a question: “Will school wide and class activities focused on our STARS code of conduct create a safe and respectful school culture and learning environment?”” Homan said.

Students set to work by making code of conduct posters, which were placed around the school. They also created assemblies where the code of conduct was modelled by teachers and students in skits. And an anti-bullying video was produced and uploaded to Youtube.

The initiative has yielded tangible results.

students the code. And there has been a decrease in reports of problem behaviour as well as referrals to the office.

Making STARS consistent across all grades and classes is seen as a way to launch the initiative’s next step, Homan said. To accomplish that, teachers have agreed to begin teaching lessons from a social responsibility curriculum created by the Richmond School District.

The impact of STARS isn’t lost on students.

Teaching kids not to bully is a key part of being a leader, Grade 5 student Cortney Cameron said. “The lessons teach the students how to not only be a Maquinna STAR but also how to solve problems in effective ways and how to help your friends when they need it,” she said.

Wright’s uptown public art plans gain ground WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Pillars with designs painted on them by local artists would help beautify the uptown, says public art advocate and South Port businessman Kevin Wright.

Wright, who owns Steampunk Cafe on Third Avenue, is spearheading a public art project in the South Port, or uptown area of Port Alberni.

If the plan materializes, Wright’s idea would see 12 cement pillars placed at strategic points between the Rollin Art Centre on Eighth Avenue down to Kingsway Avenue.

Each pillar would be adorned with a design by a local artists, in essence creating a 1,500-foot-long outdoor gallery.

“It will always be there, will engage the public and showcase the work of local artists,” Wright said. “It’s also about beautifying the community and taking some ownership of the art pieces.”

Wright has had cursory discussions with city council, he said. “It’s city property so the city would have to build the pillars.”

Wright is looking for a $10,000 investment from the city, and is applying for $100,000 from other sources. “I think $20,000 would be a good start,” he said.

One grant that has been applied for is specifically for art projects that are a mix of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal art, he added.

The area is in the embryonic stage of developing into an arts hub and the project would go a long way in adding life to it.

“Rollin does good stuff, Char’s Landing does some amazing things, there’s the Capitol Theatre and the [Pacific Rim] Gallery too,” Wright said.

The problem is that in addition to being places of art they are also places of business, which operate according to business hours.

There, the city provides spaces for sale to local artists to place public art pieces, Wright said.

The pillars would comprise different mediums and would be from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists.

“That best reflects the composition of the arts community here in the Valley,” Wright said.

Artists would have free creative reign but would have to abide by three rules: one, that the piece not be offensive to any race, creed or colour; two, it has to be safe for the public to interact with; and three, that the construction be of good quality and finish.

A steering committee will be established to oversee the project.

“The rules apply to the committee as well,” Wright said.

“It will prevent them from strangling the artists’ creativity.”

In the long term,

I love adjusting newborns! They’re just so clear. Ever watch a professional athlete up close as they’re playing their sport? That’s the way it is with adjusting babies. I looked at Mom and Dad as I checked 5 day old Ryder. They were relaxed, enjoying the moment and the insight I was providing on his emerging subluxation pattern. Having both been adjusted regularly to increase their overall health for some time and because they are both professional nurses, they were here to give him the best chance at the healthiest life possible. Ryder had a relatively easy birth but even so, movement of his neck was noticeably diminished in one direction and he had been inconsistent in his bowel movements.

As I palpated his spine gently, I was able to point out to Darin and Ashley the areas of blockage. They included the lower mid back and upper right neck which were combining to reduce the full complement and flow of nerve supply to his body.

As Ryder lay face down on Mom’s stomach, I gently released his spine and the response was a ‘toot’ and a still half asleep gurgle. I turned him over and gently released his upper right neck with a meningeal hold. Immediately, Ryder could turn his little neck completely to the right. Because infant care is so gentle, he didn’t even fully wake up during this time.

As is so common in newborns, his midback was quite stressed. More unusually, the subluxation was 4-5 levels lower than typical which affected his bowels instead of the more usual stomach discomfort of colic I see so often in infants.

An hour after the adjustment, Mom and Dad called the office excitedly.

Starved children deserve apology It is ironic that in the same week South Africa mourns the loss of the “Father of Freedom”, Nelson Mandela—the man responsible for abolishing apartheid—the Alberni Valley was the scene of an emotional Forum on Experiments on Students at the Alberni Indian Residential School.

As Africa—a country long divided by lines of colour—reconciles its past and crafts a future that includes equality, Canada is only now discovering that some of its aboriginal children were starved in the name of science.

So-called nutritional experiments were uncovered by Canadian food historian Ian Mosby and published in a scholarly article in July.

The fact that this information was buried in historical records and not made public until now is reprehensible.

Some may say this forum is so much hype — that people have always known that kids were being starved in residential schools, and that some arrived at the schools in a malnourished state. The line in the sand is drawn for us, however, in that withholding food was deliberate.

Turn this around: if such experimentation had occurred in private boarding schools, would we be so lackadaisical about the results? There would be no question people would be in an uproar.

While we are adamant that financial compensation should not be viewed as affixing dollar figures to human beings, we can’t help but be shocked that the federal government has said it has already paid compensation for wrongs for students attending residential schools; this is a new revelation.

Besides, it’s not about the money. It’s about acknowledging children whose lives were entrusted to staff at these schools were wronged. At some point, people whose entire lives have been affected by residential schools must be able to move on. In order to do that, they must be given full disclosure on what really happened in those schools.

If ever there was a case for any level of government to make an apology for an historical wrong, the deliberate experimentation on children at residential schools is it.

Ottawa puts on push over pipelines TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

ICTORIA – The federal government stepped up its sales pitch for new pipelines to the B.C. coast last week, as it prepares for the imminent release of the federal review panel’s report on the feasibility of the Enbridge Northern Gateway project.

Transport Minister Lisa Raitt and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver arrived in Vancouver to release an expert panel’s report on the current state of tanker safety on the West Coast. It was the first of two reports that tell the Stephen Harper government in blunt terms how steep a hill it must climb to enable energy exports to Asia.

Oliver gave a speech to the Vancouver Board of Trade the following morning, where he vowed to implement

one of the panel’s key recommendations.

Legislation is coming to ensure that polluters, not taxpayers, must pay for any environmental damage from resource development and transport.

The panel was chaired

by Gordon Houston, a former Prince Rupert harbourmaster and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver. Its report details the littlenoticed fact that coastal waters around Victoria and Vancouver are already congested with shipping traffic, including Alaska oil tankers, and are at “very high risk” of an incident.

Of course that “very high risk” should be seen in the B.C. context, where there has never been a serious oil spill at sea in a century of continuous petroleum shipping.

The report calls for potential polluters to show they are prepared for a “worst case”

discharge like the 1989 Exxon Valdez grounding in Alaska. It tells Ottawa the Canadian Coast Guard must be properly funded to serve as incident command.

Oliver recounted efforts made so far, including annual tanker inspections, increased aerial surveillance and marine markers.

And he reminded his audience that Canada’s only energy export customer, the U.S., is about to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest petroleum producer.

The second federal report was from Doug Eyford, a lawyer who has been meeting for months with aboriginal communities in northern B.C. and Alberta.

He found, as Enbridge has reported, that many aboriginal communities are working with energy producers to get the economic activity they so desperately need. (Most

urban people likely don’t believe this, because the conflict-addicted media report mostly protests.)

Eyford’s report is no whitewash either. It reminds Ottawa that B.C.’s unresolved aboriginal title and a general lack of trust of both the energy industry and the federal government are key obstacles to the largest economic opportunity in the world today, the rise of Asia.

Eyford was dealing with the profusion of gas pipeline projects that are set to cross northern B.C., as well as the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan Canada oil proposals.

The entrenched opposition is against oil, particularly heavy oil in tankers.

Politics and protesters aside, these are the facts for B.C. The prosperous provinces in Canada are Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland, based mainly on energy development. The rest are struggling.

B.C. continues to lose skilled workers to Alberta.

Mailbag: Feedback on luminosity, generosity, curiosity Free without violence To the Editor,

I was saddened by the death of Nelson Mandela, who sacrificed his life for freedom.

The media has outlined his journey through a life in which he met many obstacles but overcame them with courage, enthusiasm and tolerance.

As a woman of India, I was surprised to learn that this man had been to my country where he had encountered many examples of passive resistance from Gandhi and others. He used this knowledge to obtain freedom for his own countrymen.

Even so, I was astonished that upon his release from prison, he forgave his captors and instructed his followers to throw down their weapons. To me, Nelson Mandela was something of a saint; a truly good man with the strength to carry on.

I was proud that, in the end, Nelson Mandela was able to achieve freedom without violence.

Richard Berg and the city manager may both be correct on their taxing facts.

If CBC is also correct in reporting that Conservatives showed government wages and benefits are 48 per cent higher than private sector, could we lower tax by levelling the field?

Should private sectors whose taxes employ government earn less than their employees?

Is the public sector a large voting block that funds labour?

If contractors can save more than five per cent during holidays by hiring downsized experienced loggers, does this paint a target on seniors’ backs?

Compare steelworkers’ threeday bereavement with government’s six weeks and one day annual sick pay to 18 days.

Socialist strategy was to enable government workers to exceed private sector remuneration and then demand

parity with them. Did this work as well as Reagan’s trickle down theory?

Can export workers that must compete on the world market demand any more than industry can afford to pay?

Port Alberni’s low rent is a magnet for the province’s socially assisted and most retirees (except government employees) don’t have indexed pensions. If city council wants to turn this town into a retirement community, will they and the premier freeze all city and Crown corporations’ wages until the public sector catches up?

My fiancé’s grandma knows I love anything turquoise, so when she saw turquoise

Christmas trees in the Canadian Tire flyer she was on the phone immediately. Needless to say, no luck; they had no turquoise trees.

The employees at Canadian Tire called all over the island to every store but had no luck.

One employee from the Nanaimo store heard of Grandma’s relentless quest for the turquoise tree. While she (the employee) was in Vancouver with her daughter for medical treatments she came across a turquoise tree! This lady bought the tree with money from her own pocket and contacted an employee from the Port Alberni store.

This young man in turn brought the tree back to Port Alberni and hand-delivered it to Grandma so I could have my turquoise tree.

I felt this story of strangers needed to be shared. I only know the Port Alberni employee’s name is Jason.

Liz Stonard made comments without doing any research on the topic before shooting from the hip. She quotes, “top management have too many perks”.

What about the union workers?

Presently there are more than 900 union employees that are making more than $75,000 per year in wages with a fully funded benefits plan paid for by the taxpayers. A gift shop cashier is paid $24.49 per hour, ticket attendant at boarding booth $24.85 per hour, coffee shop attendant $23.35 per hour, and a third cook $27.51 per hour.

In comparison to the United Steelworkers, a green chain puller in the sawmill is paid $25.93 per hour and a logging choker man is paid $26.94 per hour.

The union rates of pay on BC Ferries are outrageous in comparison to United Steelworkers workers who have jobs that can cause body injuries.

If BC Ferries management employee wages have to be frozen, then the BC Ferries union workers can do the same.

The Chrysler group is on a tear these days with month after month of consecutive growth and awards.

Who would have thought a few short years ago that Chrysler, of the Detroit Three, would be in second place in Canada, just slightly behind Ford and well ahead of General Motors.

Some might not remember the old boxy Cherokee that was sold in the 1990s; it was a simple design that appealed to diehard Jeep enthusiasts. This new Cherokee is trying to win over new buyers, not just the Jeep faithful. It might look a bit odd at first but when you are in its presence, the design actually grows on you to a point that it has a futuristic, modern twist on an iconic nameplate.

Inside

The Cherokee is covered in soft-touch materials, comfortable seats and a large touch screen in the centre of the dash for connectivity.

The base screen is 5-inches but a larger 8.4-inch screen is available on the $29,995 Limited model. In addition, all models get a second 3.5inch screen imbedded in the instrument cluster that is fully programmable and provides custom readouts.

The back seat isn’t huge but the seats again are contoured nicely and provide good comfort.

They also slide forward to elongate the cargo area if larger objects need to be carried. The rest of the dash has a stylish design that is a good combination of the bigger Grand Cherokee and the functional Dodge Journey. Sweeping lines and attention to detail make this a class leader in terms of style and design.

Drive

Not content to use existing engines and transmission in this new Cherokee, Chrysler is showcasing brand new technology in this compact SUV, providing good fuel economy and value. All trim levels come standard with a 9-speed automatic transmission. That’s right, nine gears, the very first vehicle on the planet to come with this many cogs.

Having a chance to drive

it with the base 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder through the canyons outside of Malibu California, I can report that the transmission is so smooth and refined that the driver forgets there is so much at work. The up side is the Cherokee is capable of 9.6.L/100km in the city and 6.4L on the highway.

Verdict

The starting price is the best on the market, the technology is second to none, and the ride is smoother and quieter than the competition and the interior class above. The styling does take a while to get used to but it does look better in person.

side assistance Roadworthy: My tester was the Sorento LX. I found the vehicle to handle very nicely around town. The multi-link rear suspension kept the vehicle from rolling side to side in higher speed cornering and gave the overall ride a comfortable feeling. The electric power steering really helped in tight maneuvering.

Power was impressive and for a smaller lighter vehicle, the motor was well matched. Fuel economy numbers were good and, if driven sensibly, I am sure you could stretch these numbers to be even better.

Elk kills continue despite reward WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A $25,000 reward hasn’t dissuaded poachers from killing elk near Port Alberni.

A butchered elk was found late last week

by BC Conservation officers near Klanawa River between Nitinaht and Bamfield, a conservation official said.

The discovery came after a reward was offered by the Nuuchah-nulth Tribal Council, said Larry Johnston, director of lands and natural resources for the Huuay-aht First Nation.

“This is disturbing to hear and it pissed me right off when I found out,” Johnston said.

“When is this going to stop?”

Initial reports had five elk being found but a BC Conservation Service spokesperson said only one was

reported found.

On Dec. 3, the Nuuchah-nulth Tribal Council offered a $25,000 reward for the arrest of whoever is killing elk in the Alberni-Clayoquot region.

That makes 11 dead elk found around the Klanawa Valley, Franklin Camp, Nahmint and Flora Lake since April, conservation officials reported.

Johnston found out about the additional elk through meetings with conservation officers, he said.

Tips have come in steadily since the reward offering, and Johnston sees a pattern as a result.

Johnston believes that there is more than one person or group at work. “There’s a randomness to it: some have been found in Alberni, others in Nahmint and some in Gold River.”

A hunter, Johnston also says he believes the culprits practice pit lamping.

Pit lamping is a method of hunting that uses high powered lights at night.

Animals such as a deer or elk continually stare at the light, rendering their eyes shiny and giving their position away.

And the hunters aren’t dressing the elk after they’ve killed them the way a proper hunter would, he said.

“These guys are lifting the leg, cutting it through the cartilage where the knuckle is, slicing it, scoring a quick hind quarter and leaving the rest,” he said.

Evidence why Port Alberni needs a police officer working specifically on domestic violence relationship calls can be found along Stamp Avenue.

There are 157 purple ribbons strung along the sidewalk along the corridor, each representing a reported case of domestic violence in Port Alberni. “There would be 75 more if we added in the number that were charged,” ACAWS official Joanne Silver said. “Those numbers

are high for a population (like) this.”

RCMP Inspector Mac Richards announced a dedicated violence officer would be in place in 2014. The position is new but an officer will be found to fill it through internal competition, he said.

According to Richards, the Alberni Valley has seen a reduction in some crimes, such as mischief. But violence in relationships continues to be a concern, he said.

Police have dealt with 73 calls having to do with domestic violence so far this year, Richards’ report noted. The number of

calls spiked in June at 14, and there were nine calls in October.

In five years the Alberni detachment has dealt with 674 domestic violence calls; 2008 showed the highest number of calls at 193. And the victims services unit took in 15 new clients—half of them for domestic violence issues.

The announcement couldn’t have come at a better time, Silver said.”We’re thrilled that there is going to be a dedicated officer dealing with healthy relationships.”

domestic violence in the Valley. They provide counselling services, drop-in and outreach for victims of domestic violence.

And they operate sexual abuse services and a transition house as well.

Children are the most vulnerable victims in domestic violence. “Children who continually witness domestic violence often become perpetrators of violence themselves,” Silver said.

Domestic violence is a common call for officers. And things can escalate quickly so it can be an officer’s most dangerous call, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

Another element is when the tables are turned on officers.

“When we arrest the offender the victim will often switch sides and attack the police officer.”

Domestic violence crosses all gender, sexual orientation and economic boundaries, Allan said.

There are no easy answers to why domestic violence calls have remained steady in the Valley over the years.

No community is immune from the spectre of it, Allan said. Officers see a spike in the number of calls during the holidays. Finances are usually a variable in the mix. Substance abuse and mental health issues are also factors, Allan said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Nurse serves remote community

BAMFIELD – When Donna Dunn trained as a nurse at Saint Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, it’s a safe bet that operating a power boat and running a John Deere utility vehicle were not part of the curriculum.

Experience with both is very valuable for the Remote Certified Registered Nurse who is responsible for the Bamfield Health Centre on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

“The first question they asked me when I applied for this position was ‘How are your boating skills?” said Dunn.

Dunn was born in Port Alberni and grew up in Nanaimo.

Her father was a commercial fisherman so she has been around boats all her life and she is adept at navigating the 50-horsepower health centre boat back and forth across Bamfield Inlet and beyond.

Bamfield has been served by rural outpost/remote nurses since 1939 when the Canadian Red Cross responded to community requests and opened a small hospital in a converted residence.

While the community is isolated – accessible by boat, float plane or a two-hour drive on a winding gravel road from Port Alberni – it can be a busy place.

To meet growing needs over the years, Bamfield’s original hospital was replaced in 1974 with a modular building floated in to the west side of the inlet. In 2001, the Canadian Red Cross built a new multipurpose health centre on the east side. It is now administered by Island Health.

“Everybody in Bamfield feels very lucky to have a fulltime nurse and this great medical centre,” said Marc Phillips, who divides his time between homes in Victoria and Bamfield.

Dunn, who earned her Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Victoria and Master of Nursing from Athabasca University, balances a range of health care responsibilities in the centre and out on the community.

She is on call 24/7 for emergencies and on a typical day, she may care for patients with cuts, burns or infections.

She provides immunizations at the health centre or at the school, runs well-baby clinics, promotes health, checks blood pressure

and conducts pap screens. Twice a week, she draws blood to send off on the MV Frances Barkley packet freighter to Port Alberni for lab testing.

Physicians from Port Alberni fly by float plane or drive in for once-a-month consultations.

As the only staff member in the health centre, Dunn relies strongly on partnerships within the community and beyond. She wears a wrist-band with a transmitter to signal the Bamfield Volunteer Fire Department in case of emergency. She

Dunn, who has worked as an operating room nurse in Vancouver, Kamloops and Nanaimo in B.C. and as an operating room and outpost nurse in Whitehorse and Faro in the Yukon Territory, was not sure if she would stay very long when she first started working in Bamfield.

That was 10 years ago.

“The work is so rewarding and I feel so appreciated, why would I want to go anywhere else?” she asked.

Dunn also works closely with the BC

Ambulance Service, the RCMP and the Canadian Coast Guard – and the Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria.

“One of the most complex parts of working in a remote area is transporting patients if there is a serious emergency or illness,” Dunn said.

Dunn consults with her colleagues at Island Health and other emergency response personnel to determine the best option for transporting patients – sometimes relying on a Coast Guard vessel if it is too dark or foggy for an airlift or calling for an ambulance if time permits.

The city is the official host of the vaunted Polar Bear Swim in 2014.

Parks and Recreation director Scott Kenny made the announcement at city council’s Dec. 9 meeting.

The annual event was formerly held at Clutesi Haven Marina.

Unofficial swims have been held there the last two years.

Coordinating the swim isn’t much different from organizing an Our Town event, which Kenny said is more complicated.

This years swim however is being held at the new Canal Beach on New Year’s Day. The PEAK has come on board to help with the event, Kenny said, and officials are in talks with Western Forest Products to help as well.

The Kiwanis are helping this year, as are the Port Alberni Fire Department and BC Ambulance Service. Some of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs are slated to be there as well, Kenny said.

The Gyro Club of Alberni formerly coordinated the event and then the Kinsmen Club, Kenny said.

“It got to be too much for the Gyro because they’re a

small club.”

Mayor John Douglas is helping coordinate the event and Kenny is assisting with the operational end.

Coun. Cindy Solda questioned having the

event on city property citing liability concerns.

City manager Ken Watson replied that the city’s insurance covered liability on city parcels of land,

and that the beach is on city land.

“Revolving doors don’t always solve problems,” he said.

Instead, Batt is able to get out in the community to see what the issues are and then work with band councils on problem solving.

“You get to think outside the box and throw ideas out there.

It’s unconventional but you can be part of the solution.”

The work with communities can be complicated when Batt or his section co-workers are called on to assist with an arrest in one of the communities. “That can devastate the relationships you’re trying to build in the community,” he said.

Constables Bert Calvo and Boyd Pearson previously worked with the

aboriginal policing section in Alberni.

Calvo is stationed in Cowichan and Pearson now works with the general duty section in Alberni.

Donahue couldn’t say how many such

The Bantam A Bulldogs minor hockey team spent a whirlwind four days playing hockey and experiencing real winter in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory last week.

The Bulldogs were invited to Whitehorse last year by the bantam Mustangs, who traveled to Port Alberni to play in a tournament. Their competitive teams have limited places to play, Bulldogs’ manager Stefanie Weber explained.

“They have to bring in teams. The closest places for them to play competitive

hockey are either Fort St. John, B.C. or Juneau, Alaska.”

B.C. Minor Hockey blocked off the weekend for the Bulldogs so they wouldn’t have conflicting games.

A contingent of 29 left Port Alberni last Thursday—for some players, the first time they were ever on a plane, Weber said.

Aside from playing four exhibition games with the Mustangs (Alberni won three and lost one), Port Alberni players were billeted with Mustang players, and the whole group was treated to a dogsledding adventure.

Kids also got to play outdoor hockey and

go snowmobiling.

“For the kids, traveling like that was an experience,” Weber said.

“The people here

Wrestlers take team titles in Abby Twelve wrestlers from the Alberni Valley Wrestling team travelled to Abbotsford last weekend to wrestle as a part of a Vancouver Island team competing in the annual Abbotsford Invitational.

The Island team walked away with the club title in the both the boys and girls divisions. Individually, Alberni had 10 wrestlers place, with eight wrestlers taking home medals.

Jessie Wagner, Remi Wells, Michel Kurucz, Nolan Badovinac and Aaron Badovinac all won their divisions, taking home gold medals.

Isaac McDonald and Christian Anderson both captured silver medals, and Lauren Barker took home

Coach McDonald commented on some of Alberni’s individual performances. “For our top kids this was a great opportunity to get some tough matches. Christian Anderson was able to wrestle two tough kids from Saskatchewan.

Desperate Writers of Port Alberni Write Again By various authors

A group of desperate writers is at it again, releasing their second book of short stories and poems.

The writers involved in the second book project are Margaret Growcott, Ann Gijsbers, Julia Turner and Deb Oakes. Their work is all set in another time and place: Cathedral Grove and other Port Alberni areas.

The writers bill their work as “a quick, short read, perfect for today’s active lifestyles”. They printed 500 copies and the book is also available in e-edition.

The first Desperate Writers came out in 2007 (Spellbinders Publishing) and included the work of seven authors.

When Sam Weber steps into the most intimate performance venue in Victoria, the singer/ guitarist worries just a little.

“You play, but people are literally sitting two feet from your face. It’s a bit shocking,” he said of Andy Briggs’ home venue.

Weber performed at Victoria House Concert B on Monday night. This Thursday, Dec. 12 Weber, Luca Fogale and local singer songwriter Ryder Havdale will play the intimate Char’s Landing space on Argyle Street in Port Alberni.

Weber has reluctantly adopted an attitude of just simply performing.

“I’m right here and I’m just going to do what I normally do when I’m not two feet from you,” he said. “But you can’t really do anything wrong ... Everyone’s really understanding and

forgiving.”

The 21-year-old singersongwriter and guitarist has made some big leaps in recent years.

Weber earned a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. the summer he was 17. Though they offered him a scholarship,

the 2011 Stelly’s Secondary grad opted to return west.

“It wasn’t for me. I liked the program I did there but ultimately I just felt my time and resources were better spent here focusing on self-recording and being creative,” Weber said.

“Since being back, I’ve

built my studio business and developed those recording skills that I’ve utilized heavily to record not only myself, but other people.”

Weber’s intuition turned out well; in 2012 he toured with Jets Overhead.

“That on its own was worth it,” he said. “Adam saw me playing ... he asked me to come try out so to speak. We ended up getting along. We played a couple really cool shows with Sam Roberts, Tragically Hip, Current Swell, Stars – a lot of cool Canadian bands.”

Weber debuted his first full-length album Shadows in the Road this summer, a record filled with a “wide scope of tunes.”

“I’ve been working on writing and recording every night until about 5 a.m. for this EP I’m planning to release in 2014. I’m still working out logistics,” he said.

“That’s my main focus right now.”

ood day loyal readers. Yes, it is very close to the date that the fat man dressed in red comes down the chimney. What a hectic month this has been: has December always been like that?

A few weeks ago I photographed three generations of women at Victoria Quay.

Since it was a dreary day I used “Phil”, also known as fill flash. I had my trusty Nikon set at 400 ISO, with a shutter speed 1/125th of a second and aperture of f5.6, using my zoom lens at 70mm (translates as 105mm in 35mm language). I shot 110 photos and ended up with 44 wonderful images (slightly Photoshopped).

In the meantime, Les has been busy selling her wares at Christmas craft shows: her handmade cocktail aprons, Barbie tent (complete with sleeping bags and fabric floor), handmade greeting cards and of course the LadyzBagz.

Finally my piece de resistance: “Homemade Curry Pastes “ Rogan Josh paste. I roasted, I toasted, I pestled and mortared, and I whizzed the ingredients in the food processor. The paste was made in the afternoon and placed lovingly in the refrigerator ready for the evening curry.

My best friend until I croak came up from Seattle to spend the weekend with us. Les was at a craft fair so Neil and I had a ball shooting (cameras, not guns).

We went to Harbour Quay and dropped in on Judy at All Mex’ed Up. We also went to what I call the fishermen’s marina and got some great shots of resting boats.

They looked like they were resting up before an early morning.

Dear Families and Friends of the Villages: The Christmas season is the time of year when we turn our attention to those relationships that are most important to us. We share our homes and our hearts with those we know and care about – our family and friends, our co-workers, our neighbours and our community.

We are the Fir Park Village/Echo Village Foundation and it is our sole purpose to raise the funds needed to support the services of our homes. In addition to larger projects such as building improvements that are no longer funded by the government, the Foundation seeks to ensure that the smaller equipment items and the “extras” that enhance the quality of life for our residents are also provided.

Every year at this time the Foundation begins their annual Christmas Wish List Campaign. Last year our main focus was to raise funds to contribute to the renovation project at Fir Park Village. The Foundation contributed $50,000 towards securing the front entrance and refurbishing the new Front Lobby/Reception Area and $10,000 to fund the cost of the new wall hangings and art décor for the resident wings. We are currently looking at options for appropriate and attractive furnishings to complete the lobby seating area.

The completion of the Fir Park Village renovations and the window treatment project and resident room refurbishing at Echo Village was certainly the highlight of the past year for the Foundation. Both facilities will have ongoing needs in the future and our Foundation Board will strive to ensure that these needs are met for our residents.

We are widely known as the “City with a Heart”, and we are asking if you are thinking of making a donation in 2013, to please consider pledging a portion of your Christmas giving to the Villages through the Foundation.

Contributions can be earmarked for specific use at either Fir Park Village or Echo Village if desired, and all gifts will be acknowledged with a charitable tax receipt.

We appreciate and thank you for your support, and wish a warm and happy Holiday Season to all.
