Charbonneau still in the court system AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Alan Charbonneau, facing charges of possession of child pornography and access of child pornography, was back in court this week.

Charbonneau, along with Jason Chukra, was arrested in March of 2009 after policing partners across Canada carried out the largest ever co-ordinated investigation into Internet-facilitated child sexual abuse in the country.

The investigation, dubbed “Project Salvo”, was coordinated by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre and developed in conjunction with its domestic policing partners.

The investigation focused on users that would meet other like-minded individuals and exchange child sexual abuse images online.

In British Columbia, members from the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit (ICE), Technological Crime Unit, RCMP detachments from Richmond, Surrey, Langley, Burnaby, Prince George, Quesnel, Fort Saint John and municipal police forces from New Westminster, Abbotsford, Delta, Victoria and Saanich executed search warrants for child exploitation related offences.

In Quesnel, two separate search warrants were executed by BC ICE with Quesnel RCMP assistance and RCMP Tech Crime Unit.

Two men (Chukra and Charbonneau) were arrested for child pornography related offences.

Chukra, 39, was sentenced to three months in jail and two years probation for access of 879 photographs and 92 films consisting of child pornography in February of 2011.

In all, Project Salvo netted 15 arrests.

• In Richmond, one search warrant executed by Richmond RCMP. One man arrested for child pornography related offences. Charges were recommended to Crown Counsel.

• In Burnaby, one search warrant executed by Burnaby RCMP. • In Langley, one search warrant executed by Langley RCMP. One man arrested for child pornography related offences.

• In Fort Saint John, one search warrant executed by BC ICE with Fort St. John RCMP assistance and RCMP Tech Crime Unit. One man arrested for possession of child pornography. Charges were recommended to Crown Counsel • In Prince George, one search warrant executed by BC ICE with the assistance of Prince George RCMP and RCMP Tech Crime Unit. CRD discuses 2014 budget

The proposed 2014 five-year financial plan calls for an overall requisition increase of 2.5 per cent, with 1.4 per cent being attributable to new services, 1.0 per cent representing inflationary increases over 2013 and 0.1 per cent for the Anahim Lake Airport boundary expansion.

These preliminary numbers are exclusive of grant for assistance allocations which at this time reflect the approved grants for 2013 as new grant requests have not yet been considered in the Central or North Cariboo.

The provisional budget will be presented at the next CRD Board meeting on December 13 for adoption Once the provisional budget is adopted, the CRD will be seeking input and feedback through three subregional community engagement sessions which will take place in early 2014.

Be sure to watch for the dates of these sessions to ensure you have your say in the process before the final budget is adopted at the end of March.

Regional District will be sending a letter to the Minister of Transportation and BC Ferries opposing the proposed cancellation of Route 40 (Port Hardy to Bella Coola).

Rotary Clubs join forces

In 2000, the Sunrise Rotary Club was formed by local Rotarians who wished to meet prior to work in order to give back to Quesnel and the Rotary world.

Over the past 13 years, the club has contributed to the community through local projects and donations to both local and international groups.

The club raised funds by hosting a variety of events including our signature event, the Diamond Calcutta.

This year, Sunrise Rotary is donating to five community projects. School District #28 will receive $1,000 to go to the annual bursary fund for graduating students attending post-secondary institutions. The Salvation Army will receive $5,000 for the community kitchen program which provides hot meals to needy community residents. The Cariboo KidSport chapter will receive $4,000 to support sport registrations for children whose families need financial

assistance in order for their child to enjoy a season of sport. The Sunrise Rotary Club donates annually to Rotary International through funds raised at their Rotary Foundation dinner hosted in conjunction with the noon hour Rotary Club of Quesnel. Rotary International projects world-wide focus on saving children and mothers, supporting education or literacy, promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, community development and their signature fund raiser the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. In support of these projects, Sunrise Rotary is donating $1,950 in 2013. The fifth donation in memory of Francine Gaetz and is a $5,600 donation to the Quesnel Community Foundation. Gaetz was one of the founding members and through this donation we honour her zest for life and her lifelong contributions to the betterment of our community.

Rotary Club of Quesnel Sunrise 2000 members will be taking the opportunity to join the larger Rotary Club of Quesnel and, working through this club, support both local and international Rotary projects. This action is in response to information the BC Food Systems Network has issued to all local governments regarding the Core Review and proposed changes to the Agricultural Land Commission and Land Reserve.

The CRD will address the following in its query: • Given that agricultural land comprises of less than 5 per cent of BC’s land base, the CRD reaffirms its support for the preservation of agricultural land in the province’s Agricultural Land Reserve; • The CRD reaffirms its support for the continuation of this decision making process as shared by regional districts and the ALC and; • An extension to the time in the core review process in order that the Regional District and other interested parties can make meaningful presentations to the review committee.

Focus on future

T

he City of Quesnel, the provincial government and other key community stakeholders have partnered to address the effects of the recent mill closure on residents and businesses in our community.

Our focus is to support displaced workers, contractors, owner/operators and their employees and others affected by this event by assisting with retraining and re-employment; to advance economic development and diversification of the local economy and support local businesses; and, to ensure that community services are provided in Quesnel to assist the broader community Mary Sjostrom through this difficult MAYOR’S MESSAGE time.

As part of this response, the Quesnel Community Resource Guide was developed, and I am pleased that it is available today. This guide provides information on employment, community and social services, job skills and retraining and financial services available right here in Quesnel. This guide is a working document which will change as service providers come forward for inclusion in the Guide. The guide is currently available for pickup at City Hall and the MLA Coralee Oakes’ office at 644A Front St. We hope to have it posted on our website shortly, at www. quesnel.ca.

By hosting the Community Information Open House Nov. 27, we brought together some of these business and economic development organizations, employment and community service providers and government representatives to provide information and answer questions in an open-house style format. The event was well attended by over 125 folks.

Thank you to city council, the MLA’s office and city and ministry staff for greeting and speaking with guests, providing information and resource material and hopefully giving residents a brighter outlook for the future of the community. From the business sector, we thank Canfor, United Steelworkers Union, Community Futures, Northern Development, Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation, Tolko, and West Fraser; from Community Wellness, we would like to thank the Carrier Chilcotin Tribal Council, Ministry of Children and Family Development, North Cariboo Aboriginal Family Program Society, and Northern Health; and last, but certainly not least, thank you to the Job Skills and Retraining service providers, College of New Caledonia, Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training, Northern Skills Training, School District No. 28 (Quesnel) – Helen Dixon Centre, Service Canada, UNBC, MLA’s office, and Work BC. The community has shown tremendous strength and resilience in response to the mill closure and I want each and every one of those affected to know that city council is working closely with local and provincial partners as the community works through this difficult time.

‘Tis the season

s it too soon to urge a little peace and good will this Christmas?

Probably not.

We’ve all seen the alternative, and it isn’t pretty.

Some of us, it seems, are so busy pursuing the material side of the holidays that we’ve lost sight of the spirit.

Stressed-out shoppers grimly hunting bargains in the aisles, screaming kids with surly parents and couples who look like they’re going to a funeral instead of experiencing the joy of the season.

In short, people who bring their bad mood into a retail outlet to share with the staff and other consumers.

While this can be a tough time of year if your finances are tight, it doesn’t have to be a fiscal or emotional crisis.

After all, the most expensive item in the store is no gift at all if the giver is grinding their teeth about the cost and the resulting damage to their credit rating.

There’s nothing intrinsically wrong about giving big gifts, but not at the cost of civility and peace of mind.

There are any number of inexpensive ways of celebrating the holiday season that don’t require busting your bank balance or losing your mind.

Try asking the people in the stores, nicely, and you might discover some clever alternatives.

So this Christmas, a suggestion: if you feel yourself starting to get anxious or angry, pause and take a deep breath and try to keep things in their proper perspective.

Try smiling. Do something nice like holding a door open or letting a driver merge in front.

It doesn’t cost a thing.

Keep in mind, this is all supposed to be honouring the memory of someone who lived an impoverished life devoted to the less fortunate.

Someone whose sacrifice might be better celebrated with a little more gratitude for the people in our lives and a little less drama at the tills this season.

Black swans deliver message of hope

F

or the last few years, every time I talked to my friend Kay Brown, I could see pain in her eyes.

The physical suffering she had endured since her whiplash injury 17 years prior had become too much for her to manage, and the quality of her life was deteriorating at the same rate as the bone alignment of her diseased spine.

As much as she wanted to distract herself with the company of friends, the agony she was in made her withdraw once it became all-consuming.

Having normal conversations felt next to impossible.

“I’d be talking to someone, already feeling terrible, and suddenly I’d get a jolt of unbearable pain that I wouldn’t be able to hide,” she explained.

It became easier for her to just stay home than to try to be social.

After years of being told nothing could be done, a surgeon named Dr. Kim in Houston, Texas, said the words she’d been praying to hear: he could fix her.

“I sat across from that nice Asian doctor with his

On A Brighter Note cute Texas accent and listened to him tell me that he could immediately eliminate 75 per cent of my pain with an operation he could do in his sleep,” she said.

“He claimed the other 25 per cent would diminish over time. I was in shock.”

Her friends and family were overjoyed at the news and Kay was hopeful, but she couldn’t wrap her head around the staggering cost.

“A one night stay in the hospital would be $80,000,” she said.

“I couldn’t imagine coming up with that kind of money on top of the surgery and travel expenses.”

Loved ones urged her to get the operation and figure out the finances later.

Her new friends, whom she had just met at the

and support extended to her by her friends and family, and even complete strangers during her time of need.

Her physical and mental transformation has come at a high price though, and her friends are now trying to help her pay the debt back.

“Kay’s a hard working single mother of three daughters, and a respected business owner in our community,” said Dr. Dave Manns, her friend and chiropractor.

“This woman has a heart of gold. I just hope that we can help her the way she would try to help any of us if the roles were reversed.”

A fundraising event for her is being held on Saturday, December 7 at the Holiday Inn in West Kelowna. Auction items and cash donations are being gratefully accepted, and there are a few tickets left for sale. It is sure to be an epic event.

Now $30,000 would be required upfront, and an additional $20,000 afterward.

Within one day some friends back home completely astonished her by coming up with the hefty loan for the down payment.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Kay laid down on a lounge chair at the hotel.

“When I opened my eyes a couple minutes later, three black swans were beside me,” she said.

“They stayed with me for 40 minutes.

“It felt magical - like some kind of omen. At first, I didn’t want to Google the meaning of it, just in case it meant the kiss of death or something.”

According to the Internet, the black beauties symbolized an epic event.

That felt right to Kay. She went ahead and had the operation, and it was a huge success.

Talking face to face with my friend is a different experience now.

Great job Editor: Recently we had the fortunate experience of spending Halloween in Quesnel.

I would like to congratulate all the children that came to the house we were visiting.

There were well over 50 children coming to the door during the course of the evening and not once did any of them forget their manners and not thank the lady of the house for the “treat” given out.

Plus most of the children also wished her Happy Halloween.

Congratulations also go to the parents of these children.

It is obvious you take your parenting job serious.

So many times we hear the negative things about our children but we like to reinforce the positive.

It has a much more lasting effect.

Good job all the way around.

As a visitor to your province and your town it was very refreshing and lovely to see.

Fear not! I’m not what you’ve been told F

ear and anxiety seem to be part and parcel of being human. From a very early age, we make choices based on our fear of the unknown. Researchers tell us that almost immediately a baby can identify its mother by smell and sound.

And few have not seen a child calmed by a mother’s touch, while strangers will often bring forth new wails of distress.

Most children learn to deal with uncertainties from the safety of a loving home. Mom and dad indulge the leap onto the mattress, driven by that

dark, unknown underbelly of the bed.

And many trusted guardians accompany little ones to their first day of school, easing the transition to what we all hope will be a safe place in which to learn more of the

great unknown.

Sadly, we all know the devastating effects that fear has on learning.

The horrific attacks on school children that we have witnessed in the last decade can hardly be borne. We react with paralyzing dismay, when danger erupts in the very place where we hope and plan to learn about life in order to dispel ignorance and fear, to facilitate life and all that promotes goodness.

The Bible speaks in Revelation about a war that started in heaven, the very place that usually represents freedom from

fear, a place full of light and goodness.

Some may respond, “How can something bad happen there?”

But when beings are free to choose their own actions (and many societies have tried and failed to legislate action and conscience), disasters will arise.

So, every year the Christmas story reminds me of the hopeful mission of the Babe: Fear not!

I love you and will save you! Yet as the Bible also notes, talk is cheap. It takes action, intentional effort and time to correct the distorted notion

that God is demanding and unforgiving. These were the lies that started that war in heaven.

But unlike people who expect swift resolutions to today’s problems, God demonstrates infinite patience and steadfast willingness to try again and again to prove the lies wrong, dispel our fear, and win our confidence and love.

I don’t know anyone on earth who is like that. This “God made flesh” is One who I will not fear!

North Cariboo Growers Co-op begun by Quesnel pioneers

nd so it began...

Do you recognize the names of Quesnel pioneers?

Many will remember them – Moffat; Yorston; Melville; Hogg; Miles; Carson; Helsdon; Rome; any name ring a bell?

These are the names of just some of the first members of the North Cariboo Growers’ Co-op.

The following are excerpts from the minutes of the Growers’ Meeting held at H. Moffat’s home April 3, 1937.

Chilcotin artist takes her photography to the edge

Robyn Mumford grew up on a ranch near Alexis Creek and did all the right things. She spent 11 years in 4-H, got a diploma in Equine Production and Breeding Management at Olds College in Alberta and was well on her way to establishing an agrarian career close to her roots. Then something happened.

Somewhere along the way Mumford decided to follow a different path. She left the farm and ambitions to breed fancy horses and pursued her passion to view the world through her camera lens and is based from her home in Quesnel.

“You’d think I would be breeding fancy horses for the Olympics, which was my lifelong dream, but my true love is photography,” she confessed.

Robyn photographed her first wedding in 2005, and hasn’t looked back.

Now she has more than 160 weddings under her belt taken in five different countries and seems to have found her niche.

“I have photographed weddings in Canada, the USA, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Holland,” she said.

“As a photographer, I am truly inspired by each and every couple’s unique personality, beauty and love.”

Last year, Mumford created a cowgirls calendar featuring majestic horses, the magnificent scenery of British Columbia and the natural beauty of real cowgirls.

Back by popular demand, she has put together a 2014 cowgirl calendar, only this time with a decided edge. The 12 stunning ladies with their magnificent horses now includes some tasteful nudity.

“It makes a great stocking stuffer, perfect for your husband, boyfriend, brother, father, uncle, neighbour or the boy next door,” Robyn quips.

“Or just get it for yourself.”

“I capture moments as they happen and believe that these truly are what memories are created by.”

In documenting weddings, she strives to take natural, expressive photographs, capturing the emotional connections between the couple.

“Anyone can tell a person to smile and take their photograph, but I attempt

to capture genuine emotions,” she said.

Robyn’s success speaks for itself. In 2007 one of her photographs of a couple riding horses in their full wedding attire won first place in an international wedding photography contest.

In 2012, she placed fourth out of 2,500 engagement photos submitted to in the Bride.ca contest.

nude cowgirl calendar kind of sprung out of her work as a wedding photographer.

“I’m often asked to photograph boudoir and pinup shoots of brides before their weddings to give as gifts to their husbands on their wedding day, so I decided to create my own version of horse pinups and last year I photographed and printed my first cowgirl calendar, all

in the month of September.”

She says it was a huge success and a no-brainer to make a second edition for 2014.

“This past year I spent photographing nearly nude cowgirls and their horses in all four different seasons all over British Columbia.”

The Canadian Cowgirls calendar can be found in discrete locations around the Cariboo. At the Hobbit House, Dandelion Living, Station House Gallery and High Country Pawn Shop in Williams Lake and at Love Styles Adult (formerly The Love Shack) in Quesnel.

Calendars will also be available from Sage Birchwater at the Farmers Christmas Markets, Dec. 7.

H

is laugh fills the show room at Inland Kenworth and there’s no mistaking whose in the building – Alex Debogorski, star of Ice Road Truckers.

Big hat, big voice, big man – Alex more than lives up to the image millions of fans around the world have come to know and love.

He was in Quesnel promoting his book King of the Road: Tales from a Legendary Ice Road Trucker, sell a few T-shirts, DVDs, and other miscellaneous merchandise but most of all to meet the people who have made him famous.

Ice Road Truckers finished Season 7 and Alex said he’s never sure if there’s to be another season.

“I wait till I get the phone call,” he said.

Filming of the now world-famous History Channel Ice Road Truckers series needs to coincide with the ice road season, Feb. 1 – March 30, give or take time depending on the weather.

Alex has been with the program from its inception and says when they started there weren’t a lot of reality TV shows and no one really knew how to film it.

However, over the years the TV crews has honed their skills and now Alex says there’s cameras mounted everywhere – in the truck, under the truck,

hanging off the side of the truck and of course the chase car is never far away.

“Every year we wreck at least one chase car and the rest get pretty beaten up.”

But he said it is also sometimes a chore to keep these crews safe.

“They look at this through the lens of their camera, not like we see it from the truck. It’s like having kids on every trip.”

He added, you’re always worried: where are the kids?; are they under the truck?; can I drive away?

“We’ve had people badly hurt, both truckers and crew members.”

Alex also said that everyone has to remember these are real truckers doing a real job and sometimes the crews slow

you down.

“Filming slows you down and we all have to run on a schedule.”

He explained one example being the 400 trucks that run on ice roads from Yellowknife (Alex’ hometown) to and from the mine sites.

“Usually there’s four trucks, spaced about 1/2 kilometre apart that start out and 20 minutes later another convoy of four trucks head out. It’s like a big chain moving slowly across the ice.”

He went on to say they run the trucks like this because the first four trucks crack the ice so the 20 minutes in-between the ice has a chance to heal before the next set head onto it.

Speed is also carefully controlled so everything is

as safe as possible.

Alex told the story of one lake where he was travelling during the night in a convoy.

“It was about 3:30 a.m. and I get on the radio and start talking about flying saucers and how aliens were probing truck drivers. Well I get taken aside by the dispatcher and he tells me to stop talking about aliens and flying saucers, it was scaring the other drivers.”

With a hearty, bellylaugh Alex said he couldn’t wait to get back on the road to talk about flying saucers.

Despite the sometimes bad-mouthing that goes on in the show, Alex said he tries to not hate anyone. He said everyone lives in a fishbowl and he tries to see life from the

He said he tries to remember to share a good joke or story and it’s obvious he loves to laugh.

One of his famous philosophical phrases was: with billions of people in the world, everyone has a page and you can either have it tell a good story where you leave the world a better place or you don’t. And with this book we’re all connected.

“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to pray with prisoners in the local jail and they usually leave with a smile on their face.”

Bea Paterson November 24, 2013

Bea Paterson passed away peacefully at home on November 24, 2013.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Bruce. Her two sons; Doug, Larry (Trish) and her grandson Jerrod.

A Celebration of Life for Bea will be held December 12, 2013 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the Golden Center in Quesnel, BC In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or The BC Children’s Hospital.

Alex Debogorski is a storyteller, comedian, trucker, TV star and intensely personable man with interests far beyond his public personna.

A man for more than just the trucking season from A12 With Ice Road Truckers now airing in 160 countries, Alex is very aware he is a representative in many ways, including representing Canada, Yellowknife, truckers, the TV show and many other aspects of his fame.

He takes that responsibility very seriously but also depends on his publicist to let him know when he crosses the line from public figure to trucker which, according to Alex, isn’t always a good role model.

He said whenever he’s approached about a young person wanting to be a trucker, or for any reason, he always tries to give good advice.

“I’ve had a lot of experience in a lot of things and I just share what I’ve learned.”

Whether there’s another season of Ice Road Truckers or not, Alex isn’t concerned as to what he’ll do.

“In winter I’m a trucker, in summer

I make top soil, which also means I haul gravel, do a bit of landscaping. I’ve done carpentry and a whole lot of other things. I have 150 pieces of equipment in my yard, some equipment, some vehicles and I sometimes sell some.

I have a Zamboni I’m trying to sell right now.”

Alex finished the interview with a

“I was driving it home and of course had to go slowly and vehicles started to pile up behind me. I noticed the vehicle right behind me was my wife Louise and I thought ‘oh good, she’ll make sure no one runs into me.’

Loving grandfather of Mitchell, Tabatha, Willow, Wenda, Brianna, Brian, Joe, Josh, Emily, Kerri, Vanessa, Nicole, Dustin, Chantelle, Ryan, Jesse and many great grandchildren. Cherished brother of Beatrice and Loretta and predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters.

Obituary Tribute

JEAN ROSEMARY GEORGE Jean Rosemary GEORGE passed away peacefully in Dunrovin Hospice House on November 28th, 2013 at the age of 81. Jean is survived by her loving husband Don, and dearly missed by her son Richard (Judy) and son Mark in Sparwood; her sister, Pam Sleep (Reg), brother Bob (Jean) Farmer, sister-in-law, Eileen (John) Graham, brothers-in-law Chris (Lyn) Martin and Tim (Janice) Martin, and many nephews and nieces, all of whom are in England. Jean is predeceased by her father Stanley, mother Winifred, sisters Irene, Joan, Sylvia and Joyce.

Jean was born in England, lived in Wales as a refugee child of World War II, met Don in the early 1950’s and was married in 1954 at Eltham, England. On April 3, 2014 they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage. Don’s expansive career had them living in New Zealand, Castlegar, back to New Zealand and then Cranbrook, until they finally settled in Quesnel in 1972.

Jean’s passion for spining wool was already well developed when she arrived here, and she moved on to become an expert in weaving, and many other crafts. Her particular attention to detail and exquisite work became well known in the area. She, along with Eileen Shannon, and Noreen Rustad would spend a lot of fun times attending workshops and

making many creations, and had many more ideas and supplies than could be used in a lifetime. Jean and Don would travel to craft fairs and enjoyed this network of friends immensely.

Our thanks go out to Dr. Van Dyk, the nursing staff at GR Baker and Dunrovin Hospice for all their special care; Noreen for her countless trips to Quesnel to help out and her guadance and many visitsthey were truly appreciated.

It is the wish of Jean’s family that her remains be cremated and returned to England sometime in the future. There will be a Memorial Service in England at that time.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The previously nomadic Healthy Transformations has found a home at 158 Davie St. Walk into the building and the effort that Renee McCarthy and Tammy Bjornson have given to creating a pleasant atmosphere is evident. The walls are painted a warm shade of charcoal, with couches and armchairs in a circle at one end of the room, and a brightly coloured children's area in an alcove at the other.

After having exercised in the beauty of nature, the pair wanted to make sure they weren't surrounded by white walls.

"I was sick of sterile. Everywhere we went it was white, McCarthy said.

"The parks were nice, but were weather pending. It wasn't so nice when it had just finished raining and the ducks had just left. It wasn't nice to do pushups on the wet grass. We really wanted to have colour in here and have it be warm and inviting and not sterile."

Now, with the location ready, they just have to let people know where that is.

"When we say 158 Davies people say 'Where's that?'" McCarthy said with a laugh.

If the address seems strange to you, it's probably because the building, and most of the buildings surrounding it, have been vacant so long.

But you know the spot: it's directly across from the overhead walkway crossing the railway tracks; it's beside the new brewery; it's just down the street from the car wash; and if you've down Legion Dr. to the Moffat St. bridge, you've driven right past it.

All that means it at the centre of the city and easy to walk to, whether you work or live downtown, in West

Quesnel, or in the Johnston Subdivision – all of which was not an accident.

"Coming to a downtown location, what was really big for us is people could walk." McCarthy said.

Before finally landing, you might have seen McCarthy or Bjornson leading classes in the park when the weather was agreeable. When it wasn't they would use Bob Deane's Black Belt Academy for cover. But a home on top of the hill kept anyone outside of South Quesnel from walking.

This allows the gym to have a little green credibility, along with allowing classes easy access to outdoor training around the river walk, which both McCarthy and Bjornson enjoy utilizing.

Besides the perfect location, the building also lets them expand, with everything from new classes to a kids corner and room to dream besides.

With the new room and a wide open schedule, things are opening up, which allows McCarthy and Bjornson to keep classes small and personal. It's this personal touch they want to emphasize.

"That's where were trying to say were

different from other places," McCarthy said.

When she was down on the coast, McCarthy said she felt lost in amongst the crowds at the gyms and wanted to change that.

The gym has expanded their usual class, which used to be called Boot Camp but was changed to 'Off the Grid' – 'people said it was intimidating,' Bjornson said of the name change with a laugh. The class now runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, from 9:15 – 10:30 and evenings, 5:30 – 6:45. They also offer the new 'Easy Movement' which runs Tuesday and Thursday, either 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. or 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. The class is billed as a exercise for people who've never worked out before, or who are recovering from illness or surgery and is designed to avoid any impact on joints and bones. The Lunch HITT is a 35 minute workout weekdays during the lunch hour, 12:10 – 12:45 and McCarthy said she has had great feedback from participants, saying it has increased their energy reserves for the afternoon

at the office. Finally, they also offer 'Parents and Tots', which is 'Off the Grid', but parents are encouraged to bring their children, though children are allowed at all classes.

"It's a different atmosphere. You're not worried about bringing your kids and annoying another parent," Bjornson said.

McCarthy said that not only do the kids enjoy their time there, but it's helpful for them as well.

"They're seeing their parents work out, which is example setting. There are kids who set up their own little circuit in there."

And here's something they'd like to especially stress: all the classes are open to both men and women.

That means they want you, whoever you are: have a bevy of kids? no problem; no time after work? try the Lunch Hitt; never worked out in your life? Easy Movement has you covered.

Not only does Healthy Transformations have a wide array of classes, but each class is designed so no one is competing, by putting each person, or a couple of people, at different stations. The stations are further broken down from the easy version all the way up to the hard version, which lets those working out customize their workout.

Next year, the duo want to expand to fill more of their new space, but for now they’re getting the word out there: that empty building you used to drive past without looking– that’s a great place to get in shape now.

The Atom Thunder celebrate their first place finish in Merritt.

Silver and gold Last weekend was silver and gold for the Quesnel Figure skating club skaters.

The club sent Alyssa Brown south to Winfield, just south of Kelowna, to compete at the Okanagan Interclub competition, where she took the top spot in Star 4 Girls.

Brown was pleased with her skate coming off the ice.

“I was really confident and I felt really happy with my skate,” she said.

Brown’s tricks were mostly gold rated from the judges, with just her axle and loop falling umder the golden grade.

Beverly Smetaniuk went west to Kitimat, where she compete in the Kla-how-ya Interclub competition, taking second in the Star 4 Ladies category.

Smetaniuk skated a clean session and was happy with her result.

“I felt good, because it’s one of the better skates I did,” she said.

Smetniuk took some risks in her skate adding spins that she had not landed in competition in the past. The risk, however paid off with a very clean skate.

Kayla Flanigan was scheduled to join Smetaniuk in Kitimat but had to pull out of the competition do to fluid on her knee.

The young Thunder teams have seen some success over the last month as both the midgets and atoms finished in the medal in their last tournaments.

The atom Thunder stood head and shoulders over team's in Merritt last weekend, taking first place in the tournament.

The midget Thunder went to Kelowna at the end of last month and finished third of the 12 teams that competed.

The Midget Thunder started the tournament by beating the West Kelowna team 5-2. The Thunder were in control for most of the game, getting four of their goals in the first period, putting them up 4-0 at the end of the first.

harder, as the game went back and forth to a 4-4 tie. Kelowna popped out to an early lead in the first, but the Thunder reeled them back in the second and through a very tight third that proved to be inconclusive.

The Thunder then went on to tie Whistler, 3-3 in a very tight gam. Both team's stayed tight through the first and second, while allowing no goals in the third.

The early win combined with two ties was enough to get the Thunder into the bronze medal game against Fort Saskatchewan, who they lost to, 6-1, to take third in the tournament.

This weekend, the novice house league will compete for Quesnel dominance.

So while my body has a couple more weeks getting used to this new way of moving before I can go big, my mind has about the same amount of time to get used to the idea of a new uniform before it becomes necessary to continue.

For now, though, I’ll just concentrate on pointing my toes correctly and trying to figure out what, exactly, my hand is doing and ignoring the ribbing from friends.

The Mercedes CLA 250 is here and it is a cause for celebration.

This stylish compact car is powerful, filled with all kinds of features and starts at an amazing $33,900.

What this means for the entire car market is a trend towards more car for less money.

If Mercedes Benz can sell such a competent car for so little, the pressure will be on non-premium brands to sharpen their pencil, add more features, and revise their prices lower. Mercedes already has a very affordable hatchback with the B250, which arrived about a year ago and is the basis for this CLA. Both of these cars open up Mercedes Benz to a new market of buyers who might have been thinking about buying

a non-premium brand but now realized a CLA is within reach. This, along with Mercedes strong resale value will help to keep lease rates low, amplifying the value this car offers.

Looks Mercedes helped create the “coupe” 4-door sedan several years ago with the CLS sedan, which is based on the E-Class sedan. By dropping the roof, raking the front and rear windows and adding a more aggressive front end, produces an eye-catching sedan that looks classy and aggressive at the same time. Mercedes has taken this formula and applied it to the B-Class platform to produce this coupe-like sedan. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels but the sport package is great value, at $1,600, which adds 18-inch AMG wheels and extra AMG exterior trim pieces.

The AMG look is more aggressive, providing a bigger front air intake and chin spoiler to complete the look. (The car pictured here does not have the AMG package but does have the bigger wheels) The side windows are slim as is the back window for limited outward visibility, not so much for the driver but the rear seat passengers, especially kids.

Inside One trend I’m not sure I like is placing a screen in the centre of the dash, like putting an iPad Mini in the permanently placed in middle of the dash. It doesn’t look particularly polished,

almost like an afterthought.

Audi’s new A3 sedan, arriving in March, has the ability to lower their screen, which I think is a better approach.

The premium package is a must because it includes a huge panoramic sunroof, backup camera, automatic climate control and heated front seats; all of this for $2,800. This is a small car; the roof feels very low and back seat passenger’s needs to be children or shorter adults. Rear seat outward visibility is limited and legroom is also at a premium.

Drive The launch event for this new CLA was held in the Washington DC area, leaving historic Georgetown and heading towards Maryland’s ports and navel

academy. This provided some excellent stop-andgo traffic opportunities in Washington’s morning rush hour and then getting to stretch the new CLA’s legs on fabulous Interstate highways. The power plant is a direct injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a healthy 208hp.

The power goes through a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission to the front wheels. The more expensive and powerful 355hp CLA 45 AMG has an all wheel drive (AWD) system as standard equipment but the base CLA 250 will get this important option sometime in 2014. Power is fantastic, especially if the transmission is placed in the sportier mode. This car cruises effortlessly at

highway speeds and passes with ease.

All CLA models come with a Collision Prevention Assist feature that alerts the driver to the possibility of an impending collision.

Verdict We are heading into a wonderful period of lower priced cars, or vehicle fitted with more standard features. This new CLA 250 is a perfect example of this.

Other new entries include the latest A3 that arrives in March and starts at $31,100 and then the new BMW 1 Series will arrive in about a year.

For the price of a wellequipped non-premium brand Canadians can now get a premium German sedan for about the same price.

If I were to get this CLA 250, I would include the premium package to get the sunroof, backup camera and heated seats. The Sport package is also tempting for the bigger wheels. This would bring the price up to $38,300. Not cheap, but you do a get a lot of car and features for this price.

I hear that BC’s Mercedes Benz dealers have had huge interest in this new CLA with back orders now in place as they try to get as many cars as they can. A nice problem for Mercedes to have and they derive it as this is a great car for the money.

The Most Macho Classic Cars Rob Sass

We have no desire to wade into the minefield that is the eternal “chick car vs. dude car” argument.

But it’s self-evident that the cars on this list most definitely have a “Y” chromosome. In fact, they positively ooze testosterone: 1. 1966-67 Shelby Cobra 427: Many people aren’t aware of the fact that the fire-breathing Cobra actually started out as a rather delicate British sports car, the AC Ace. Carroll Shelby saw the potential, installed a 260-cubic-inch Ford V-8, and it was good. But a 427-cubic-inch NASCAR engine was even better along with side-pipes and fat fenders. Performance was blistering and so was the noise.

2. 1970-71 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda: The new Mopar E-body forever broke the association with the old economy Valiant,

and the Barracuda and its stablemate, the Dodge Challenger, were low, wide and particularly menacing. The 426 Hemi V-8 made it one of the baddest of all time.

3. 1968 Corvette L88: This is the Corvette that ordinary civilians weren’t supposed to be able to buy. It was designed for the track at a time when GM was observing an official racing ban. L88s had no creature comforts (not even a heater) and overheated in the briefest of traffic jams. To further discourage non-racers, GM underrated the horsepower of the 427-cubic-inch engine, reporting it at around 400 hp. In reality, it was well over 500 hp.

4. 1969-73 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona”: The Ferrari Daytona was one of the last V-12 front-engine Ferrari GTs that Enzo Ferrari personally had a hand in. For almost every year it was in production, it was the fastest road car available

Choose your favorite juiced ballplayer from the ‘roids era and compare his forearms to the 930’s aggressively flared fenders and you’ll get it. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee an SUV for jungles, urban or otherwise JONAS GAGNON

The first thing any one will notice about the new Cherokee is that, despite its traditional name, it colours outside the Jeep box.

Quesnel Regency Chrysler loaned me the North 4x2 V6 model, with Chrysler's 3.2L Pentastar V6 and the new 9 speed gear box.

Walk up to the SUV from the front and the only thing that will look familiar for Jeep fans is the seven slat grill, though even that's significantly twisted, with a kink half way up the grill kicking the top half back 30 degrees. Continue walking around the vehicle and it becomes much more conventional past the A pillars.

It's a polarizing look and marks a departure from the rugged bricks of yore. It's a design that Jeep purists will have to get used to, but it's face differentiates itself well from the hosts of largely forgettable CUVs that populate mall parking lots around North America.

And that is where Jeep has their focus.

Unlike the CJs and Cherokees of the past, this Jeep is focused on bringing families out of the Japanese CUVs and into the vehicles from the company that created the SUV class.

And here, in the streets and parking lots of a city and the highways between, the Jeep feels most at home.

That automatic gear box, with all nine of its speeds, shines in the city, giving the vehicle a claimed 12.3 l/100km (19 mpg) in the city and 10.7 l/100km (22 mpg)on the highway for the FWD V6.

It's a trick gearbox, and though they seemed to have trouble with it earlier in the year, it shows no

signs of any problems on the road.

With nine speeds on hand, there are a lot of ratios to choose from, enough that it would be useless for a human driver, but the computer chooses gears well, with no hunting for gears, and slides them in without any fanfare. When power is demanded, the gear box bumps down a gear (or three?) with ease, then skips back up into cruising mode when you ease off the throttle.

Cruising is probably what the vehicle does best – you'd be hard pressed to get the engine to rev over 2000 rpm on the highway unless you are passing or averaging supra-legal speeds. The engine and transmission seem to agree on 1500 rpm as a great engine speed and work to keep it at that. That means there's no drama in the cabin. Road noise is kept to a minimum and little engine noise that does get in sounds closer to a quiet idle than anything buzzy or droning.

Inside the Cherokee is a good place to be, with nice, two-tone cloth seating and soft touch materials wherever your hand seems to rest.

The large, 3.5" screen dominates the centre of the dash and offers options that would make a laptop feel inadequate. Not only does it have XFM along with am/ fm but includes HVAC and a screen to set up a variety of options. Going into winter, the set up screen is perfect, allowing you to program the heated seats and steering wheel to turn on with the car, which means even if the car isn't warm when you get in, the front seats and steering wheel will be.

The heater and radio also have redundant controls

The Cherokee beside it’s older sibling. Below; the centre stack and helpful screen of a 4X4 version of the Cherokee below the touch scene, which are chunky enough to allow use with gloves, which means you won't have to remove your gloves to control the heat or the volume. You can't however, control your heated seat except through the touchscreen, which might get annoying if you haven't programmed it to heat up when your vehicle starts.

The Cherokee also comes in two flavours of all-wheel drive, which they've dubbed Active Drive I and II. Active Drive one is pretty standard AWD fare and is probably more suited to keeping you on the road when things get slippery than taking you through mud pits or over rocks, but the Active Drive II seems to be Jeeps response to those who don't think its a Jeep unless it can climb

mountains.

If your idea of a Jeep includes solid front axles and locking diffs, the Trailhawk with Active Drive II, is the one to get. It gets bigger wheels, a higher stance and very trick diffs to get you a low gear set with a crawl ratio of 56:1 and a locking rear diff along with adaptive traction control. With a couple styling tweaks, the Trailhawk also looks more Jeep-ish, like it can take to the trails and keep up with its more hardcore brethren.

This then is a Jeep that acts as a bridge between the original SUV, the super rugged Willys Jeep, and the SUVs we see populating the roads today and allows buyers to pick their weapon of choice, from kid hauling all the way up to rock crawling.

Amateur speed cops Self-appointed speed cops are danger to themselves and everybody else on the road.

We’ve all seen them in action: they stick themselves in the centre lane at the speed limit and will not move over to let anybody pass. It promotes impatience and frustration which leads to smashes. Leave speed enforcement to the cops.
