GREAT FROM GOOD TO
Business community celebrates excellence Abbotsford’s business community turned out in full force to honour their own on Nov. 20 at the 18th annual Business Excellence Awards. More than 500 guests came out for the event that saw 91 nominees vie for awards in 11 categories. The celebration was held at Tradex and sponsored by The Abbotsford News and the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. Rick Rake, chair of the Business Excellence committee, served as master of ceremonies. “When we started the Business Excellence Awards 18 years ago, we wanted to recognize the businesses, organizations and individuals in our community that lead the way and stood out from the rest,” he told the crowd.
The opening reception featured networking opportunities followed by a buffet dinner. Before the awards were handed out, guests enjoyed a performance by the Business Excellence Performance Troupe, which did a re-creation of the 1947 protest in which kids rallied against an increase in the cost of chocolate bars from five cents to eight cents. Also providing entertainment, during a break in the awards ceremony, was the Drum Cafe with its interactive experience. Mike Welte, president of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, said the awards are a “showcase of Abbotsford’s diverse business community.” “Every year, I learn about new businesses in our community
as a direct result of attending this outstanding evening. I am delighted to see so many recipients and nominees proudly displaying their Business Excellence certificates in their businesses around Abbotsford. Everyone is a winner in my books,” he added. Allan Asaph, executive director of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, said this year’s judges were particularly impressed with the quality of nominees. He said the Chamber works hard to ensure that the Business Excellence Awards are meaningful for all the nominees and that they are properly recognized. “The feedback we receive from both nominees and guests each year helps us to keep improving and growing the awards as Abbotsford’s premier business event.”
“MCC BC Non-Profit Organization of the Year” Abbotsford Business Excellence Award 2013
Mennonite Central Committee BC Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is a church based organization that provides disaster relief, community development and peace building initiatives in 63 countries around the world. MCC programs in Abbotsford respond to child poverty, refugees, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and job creation. Our Ecoworks landscaping company is a social enterprise that bids on contracts and creates jobs with support and training for those that need a second chance. Our Festival for World Relief each September is run by 1,200 volunteers that host over 20,000 visitors and raises about $600,000, the second largest event at Tradex in Abbotsford. MCC has over 100 Thrift stores across North America, with 3 stores in Abbotsford run by over 400 volunteers generating almost $1 million to support local and international services. Thrift stores also recycle, assist those in hardship, and create caring communities for volunteers and customers.
Thank you...
Our material aid centre in Abbotsford has 800 volunteers that donate, sort, pack and ship about $500,000 of relief kits, school kits, blankets and other goods for overseas relief efforts.
MCC BC volunteers, donors, program partners, customers, and staff who contribute your time, talent, and resources to our thrift shops, relief sales, material resource warehouse, local and international programs.
MCC created Ten Thousand Villages, a chain of over 100 fair-trade retail outlets throughout North America, which creates sustainable jobs by importing crafts produced by family enterprises located in impoverished developing countries.
This award is for you!
The new MCC Centre being built on Gladys Avenue will help revitalize the downtown area and will also be home to our head office, 2 large thrift stores, a material aid centre, social service programs, Mennonite Foundation, a Café, and a new Ten Thousand Villages store.
