Lacombe Kinsmen demonstrates importance of altruism Group helps to meet rising needs of the City through Santa’s Anonymous

T

he Lacombe Kinsmen were this year’s Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Not-for-Profit of the Year award recipients.

Warren Kreway, a semi-retired Kinsmen member of 40-plus years, said that what earned the Kinsmen the award, in simplest terms, is community contribution.

“This is one club that lives what they speak.”

Kreway said that the entire purpose of the Kinsmen is to promote kinship and that they do so by promoting community spirit.

He said that, in the past, whatever the Kinsmen chose to do there was a feeling of camaraderie that “Radiated through the community” and promoted community spirit.

For Kreway, what is most memorable about his time with the Kinsmen is the relationships made. He said he has formed lifelong friendships through the Kinsmen.

“That long-term, steady friendship that is there for life,” said Kreway. “It never leaves.”

As with many social clubs, the Kinsmen have been around so long it’s easy to forget exactly what they do.

While they are visible in the community, it’s sometimes hard to pinpoint the specific mandate of the group.

Kreway said the Lacombe Kinsmen began as a social club for young men. Members met once a week to have fun. Eventually it evolved to give back to the community and reached out to other communities as well.

“What we were trying to do was teach young men the importance of giving back to the community,” said Kreway.

Teaching people, at any age, the importance of altruism gives them tools to become better people, said Kreway. He also said it is a skill he thinks society is losing.

As such, Kinsmen projects are more important now than they have ever been. One such project is Santa’s Anonymous, a project Kreway co-chairs.

FCSS collects applicants from families to receive toys for Christmas and the Kinsmen collect the toys and then deliver them along with Santa Claus.

Lacombe Kinsmen have been running the Santa’s Anonymous programs since Kreway joined the club in 1975. He said he was not as involved with the project then as he is now, but it was clear at that time there was a need for the Santa’s Anonymous program in Lacombe.

“This was a need that we decided to service. We took it upon ourselves to make sure that

Christmas was a memorable time for them.”

Kreway went on to say that without Santa’s Anonymous, many children would not have a Christmas most Lacombians know it. He added that, at this time of year, caring for needy families is all the more important.

Kreway said the Santa’s Anonymous program started with a ‘very local’ feel to it. Kinsmen knew the families that were in need and did what they could to help them. Now, with both the community and the Kinsmen club growing, the Santa’s Anonymous programs has grown considerably.

“We are bombarded right now,” said Kreway, who also sits on the board of directors for FCSS. “We are overloaded.”

However, Kreway said being bombarded is a good thing. It shows that the program is needed in Lacombe and gives Kinsmen and their supporters reason to continue supporting it.

As with most of Lacombe’s various charities and not-for-profits, the Lacombe Kinsmen is well supported. Kreway said there is an overwhelming number of toy donations taken for Santa’s Anonymous each year.

“One of the things that Lacombe is most proud of is the volunteering. The community backs

us because they see the value of it. That is what we are trying to teach the next generation.”

Santa’s Anonymous, along with all over the other projects Kinsmen support, is not just about helping others, said Kreway. It is also about encouraging others to do the same and demonstrating that it is worthwhile.

It certainly is worthwhile for Kreway. He said that seeing the looks on children’s faces when delivering Christmas toys is more than enough reward for the work he puts in. Kreway added such initiatives have an effect that mushrooms out to the rest of the community. news@lacombeexpress.com

Food bank in good shape for Christmas season Donations are still welcome, organizers say

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Officials with the Lacombe Food Bank say they are in good shape heading into the Christmas season.

So, far, the busy season is going well, said volunteer Jeanne Ebens.

“It’s been pretty good, we’ve had quite a few donations.” She added that the food bank’s food drive on Nov. 2 went very well and yielded 12,160 lbs of food.

Ebens said the Lacombe Food Bank prepares between 32 and 40 food hampers for its clients per week.

Around Christmas that number can go up to between 40 and 48.

Some days, the food bank can prepare as many as 18 hampers in a single day, Ebens added.

December means more donations are coming in as well, said Ebens, which also makes the food bank busier. While the organization is doing well for donations, more are always welcome. Ebens said specialty items, like cranber-

ries, stuffing and in particular frozen turkeys, are sought after this time of year.

Many other local groups have food drives and food donation programs of their own that benefit the Lacombe Food Bank.

Lacombe’s Co-Op and Sobeys grocery stores are among them and Ebens encouraged those wishing to donate to the food bank to

Co-Op supports the Farm Credit Canada (FCC) Drive Away Hunger campaign. Through this program customers can buy pre-made packages containing different foodstuffs pre-priced at different increments. Those packages are then delivered to the Lacombe Food Bank which uses them to construct

their own hampers.

‘A Time for Sharing’ is the name of the Sobeys program. Sobeys Co-owner Lynda Bouchard said the program began like FCC Drive Away Hunger, with Sobeys assembling little hampers of their own pre-priced at different increments that customers could buy which would then be donated to the food bank. Now, the program has evolved into something a little different.

Instead of buying pre-priced hampers, shoppers at Sobeys buy ‘gift tags’ in increments of $5, $10, $15 or $25. Customers write their names on the tags which are then displayed in the store.

All the money from the sale of those tags goes towards food bank purchases, said Bouchard. When the program comes to a close, Sobeys orders product for the food bank with the money from the campaign and the food bank receives cases of food to stock their shelves. news@lacombeexpress.com

MDP will serve City of Lacombe for decades to come

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The City is continuing to revise its Municipal Development Plan (MDP).

Right now, the plan’s revision is in a research phase, said Manager of Planning and Development Lyla Peter. “Right now we are doing a lot of background re-

search.” She added the City is reading through its own documents, government documents and those of other communities while making notes and finding what seem like good ideas for Lacombe and what may not work so well here.

While it is in the first steps of a long process of updating the plan, Peter

said it is important that the public knows what is going on and to that effect the City has launched an aggressive awareness campaign.

Readers may have noticed that the Lacombe Express has been running a series of articles and advertisements regarding the MDP in the past few weeks.

Through these pieces, the City hopes to both educate and gain feedback from the general public of Lacombe.

“We also wanted to get the people involved in this,” said Peter. “So we’re taking these topics and we’re raising awareness that these are the topics we will be looking at. We’re just trying to start a conversation.”

In the New Year, the City will begin a more formal consultation process with the community through a number of workshops. At that time, the City will begin looking for direct feedback from Lacombians on how they want Lacombe to look in the future.

ber not only that the plan will affect what Lacombe looks like in the near future, but that it will be in place for the next several decades as well. As such it is important to think about how things will look several years down the road.

Peter said Lacombians and the City need to remember that Lacombe’s new areas won’t be new in 30 years. City’s evolve and the demographics of neighbourhoods change. Children of families in young neighbourhoods grow up, buildings and infrastructure age and population changes with people moving in and out of the City.

“It’s kind of this constant cycle. So we have to plan for those cycles.”

Jennifer Kirchner, planner for the City of Lacombe, gave an example of how that planning might affect neighbourhoods. While setting up playgrounds in every available park space of an area that has a lot of young children might seem like a good idea now, those playgrounds will not serve much purpose in the future should the area later become inhabited by mostly seniors. The key to creating a successful plan, said Kirchner, is making spaces that can be adapted for different uses. news@lacombeexpress.com

P3 arrangement brings questions Lacombe wins recognition award

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Black Press The planning and construction of Blackfalds’ new school is happening in a process the Wolf Creek Public Schools board of trustees has never faced before.

Secretary-Treasurer Joe Henderson said in the past, the board would have hired an architect and hold meetings with the pubic to determine what amenities and layout were wanted. “Terrace Ridge and Iron Ridge were both done in that fashion.”

The board is usually given a budget to support that process and they would have been in charge of procuring the architect, handling the working drawings of the project, tendering the project and hiring a general contractor. “And at the end of the day we own a school.”

Now, WCPS won’t own the school being built for Blackfalds for 30 years.

“The difference now is we’re into a P3

(private-public partnership) procurement process, where we have a two or three choices,” said Henderson, referring to layout designs. A bridging architect was appointed to determine what changes could be made within the chosen floor plan. Design changes can include moving interior walls and increasing or decreasing certain space usage, such as administration or the library.

However, Henderson said they were still limited to the plan selection and, unlike past schools, a feeling of starting out and creating the school they wanted wasn’t there. “We are not involved in the procurement of the building, at all. That is done by the province of Alberta infrastructure,” said Henderson.

“At the end of the day we are given a school we can operate. We will put education programs in it, we’ll pay for utilities, we’ll pay for custodial but the running of the building, the physical structure, remains with the proponent of the P3.”

The City of Lacombe was recognized with an Overall High Achiever Award for its efforts in fostering healthy eating and active living in Lacombe by Communities Choosewell at an awards ceremony in Cochrane last month.

“We are honoured to receive this award,” said Recreation and Culture Manager Sandi Stewart. “The City is putting in a lot of effort in providing healthy education; creating healthy recreational opportunities;

and reducing barriers to healthy living for our residents.”

City staff was recognized for their public education efforts at the weekly Farmer’s Market; hosting the annual WinterActive Challenge; and for their outreach activities designed to teach young parents on how to eat and live healthy on a budget. The award comes with a $2,000 grant to support healthy eating, and active living relatedinitiatives in Lacombe.

by Alberta Health and managed by the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association.

OPINION The hats of hackers In today’s ever-changing, evergrowing world of technology, it seems everyday we are hearing of a new program, a new app or a new device.

Of course, as with everything, there are also those who wish to use that new technology for malicious purposes and neither can we turn our heads without hearing about a new computer scam, a new attempt at identify theft or a new hacking tool.

We hear about ‘hackers’ and ‘hacking’ a lot in the news and usually it’s in a negative context. However, there is more to hacking than just breaking into devices with harmful intentions.

Hacking is something that people who design software, apps and electronic devices need to think about, so they also design security systems within those things to protect users from hackers.

Who do they get to test these systems? Why it’s hackers of course.

What better way to test security than to pay a professional to try and break into it? That way, developers are able to learn how their defenses perform in a real-world situation and hackers can identify weak points in the security system and how to correct them.

These hackers are referred to as ethical or ‘white hat’ hackers to use

a western analogy. They are often employed by companies as ‘penetration testers’ to test security systems in this way.

There are ‘black hat’ hackers as well.

Black hat hackers are the ones we hear about on the news all the time. They are the ones who install key-logger software, create Trojans and use other devious tools to break into systems to steal personal information and money.

There is also a third group of hackers. These are ‘grey hat’ hackers.

As the name suggests, grey hat hackers fall into a grey area when it comes to hacking. They may have white hat methods but black hat tendencies or vice versa.

Some grey hat hackers could perhaps be described as “freelance penetration testers.”

They might hack into a web site, software program, or app in order to test for weak-points like a white hat hacker would, but then instead of pointing the weak points and how to fix out them to the designer, they offer to sell them to them.

If the designer decides not to pay, such hackers might even offer to sell the information to the highest bidder, perhaps even black hat hackers who could use them for malignant means.

Grey hat hackers also include ‘hacktivists’, hackers who use hacking as a means to demonstrate protest.

They hack into the web site of organizations they protest against and post messages and sometimes make demands of the organization.

If those demands aren’t met,

they may even threaten to do something more vicious, such as steal and leak personal information about their target online.

They are considered grey hat hackers because their methods are illegal, but they are using them for a good reason, at least in their minds.

During a recent trip to Hong Kong I met with a plethora of civil servants, some politicians and a few business people, all with an obvious interest in the future of their territory. My purpose was to get a sense of how Hong Kong has held up in the face of massive change occurring in China proper.

While Hong Kong has its own partly-appointed/partly-elected legislature and control of its borders, it faces the pressures of population, pollution, and corruption inherent in residing right next door to China.

Some difficulties, such as pollution, are obviously cross-border,

and will only be solved once (mainland Chinese) governments and business hew more closely to the polluter-pay principle and as technology and regulation advance.

Others, such as corruption, can be guarded against internally in Hong Kong proper by keeping its own institutions strong.

In general, the Hong Kong mandarins and politicians I met were remarkably clear and unapologetic about two things: First, they want Hong Kong to stay capitalist (imagine a bureaucrat in Ottawa stating that as an end goal). Second, they were determined to ensure the territory continues to be governed according to the rule of law.

Their emphasis on the rule of law might well be the result of being next door to China, whose own justice system, bureaucracy, government and private sector are shot through with corruption and crony capitalism (as opposed to the useful, rules-based and meritbased type of capitalism).

China’s problems with corruption and crony capitalism are partly the result of the inadequate attention it pays to the rule of law and to its weakly enforced prop-

erty rights. In fact, as measured by my colleagues as part of the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the World Index, China legal system and property rights placed 77th out of 153 jurisdictions. (That compares to Hong Kong in the 24th spot and Canada at 11.)

That dismal standing is backed up by anecdotes: one Hong Kong businessman told me the most important thing China could do in the near-term is to clean up its corrupt judiciary. But let’s put China aside and look at another useful benefit from travel: it reminds us that one’s own country should not be taken for granted.

While in Hong Kong, I kept up with latest news on the Senate scandal, including RCMP allegations that attempts were made to water down Senate reports on misbehaving senators. While pressuring senators to weaken reports does not rise to the level of a criminal offence, it does reveal a culture tempted to bend ‘in-house’ rules to gain partisan advantage and/or to avoid further critical headlines.

Such revelations came out the very week I met with officials from Hong Kong’s Independent Com-

mission Against Corruption, an investigative body set up in the 1970s to combat corruption that was then perceived to be widespread in the police, government and in business.

The contrast is obvious: here was Hong Kong, attempting to inoculate itself from the corrupt governance next door while realizing the temptation to bend the rules is a constant, regardless of where one lives. While the importance of the rule of law is blindingly obvious, it would be a mistake to think ‘obvious’ equals ‘unlikely to happen.’

Think of all the graft uncovered in Quebec’s construction and municipal governments in the past year.

One critical difference between a well-functioning city-state on the periphery of east Asia or a country like Canada and China is the degree to which rules are predictable and enforced. Those tempted to bend or break the rules should remember such distinctions, as should the rest of us.

Blackfalds classroom space issue needs solution

BY AMELIA NAISMITH Black Press Wolf Creek Public Schools board of trustees has decided to apply for two more modular classrooms for Blackfalds, despite the fact they’ve been told the chances of the application being accepted aren’t high.

Because of the bathroom capacity of Blackfalds junior campus, that school isn’t able to handle the population increase a modular would produce. Secretary-Treasurer Joe Henderson said the only place for the modulars would be the elementary campus.

“I’m not sure the province would look favourably on an application, as they’ve

done in the past.”

With the new school scheduled for construction in Blackfalds, Henderson said the population structures of the junior and elementary campuses are subject to change and there may not the same pressures warranting the modulars. “If the numbers would support it, (but) I don’t think they will.

‘I’M NOT SURE THE PROVINCE WOULD LOOK FAVOURABLY ON AN APPLICATION, AS THEY’VE DONE IN THE PAST.’ JOE HENDERSON “Our biggest crowding issue would be at the junior campus and we don’t have any more room to add space there. We’ve expanded the junior campus as far as we can,” he added.

“Is there any harm in asking for more modulars and being turned down?” Trustee Barb Walker asked Henderson.

Henderson said, to gain relief at the junior campus, students would have to be moved elsewhere. Two options mentioned were, having Grade 5 students remain at the elementary campus and moving Grade 9 to Lacombe. “You’re going to have to look at your grade configurations.

“The difficulty really comes beyond Sept. 1, 2016. You’re going to have excess space,” he added.

However, the board felt, with Blackfalds’ growth rate, it couldn’t be guaranteed the modulars wouldn’t be needed.

Both Trustees Bob Huff and Donna Peterson suggested, if the application was accepted but the modulars weren’t needed by the time they were constructed for the school, the board could decline them, in which case they believe the modulars would be sent to another division.

A look back at Lacombe’s musical legacy Gladstone George Hall Hutton, the ďŹ rst superintendent of the Dominion experiment station at Lacombe, was a man of extraordinary vision and energy.

FREDEEN He saw Lacombe as a future city and initiated many of the early developments. He directed the affairs of the station from 1907 to 1918 and throughout this period was an exceptionally strong voice in the shaping of the community.

He purchased land in the vicinity, selling it to individuals he persuaded to share his vision and turning development over to them.

One example was the Lacombe Nursery.

Hutton shared his vision of a nursery with Caldwell whom he had hired as gardener for the Station, and thus was born, in 1913, the nursery operated by Caldwell and his partner Mitchell.

Their search for a manager took them to the federal government’s forestry station at Indian Head, Saskatchewan where they

immediately hired J.N.B. McDonald to operate their new business.

McDonald, an inspector for the federal government’s prairie tree planting division, had been a resident of Indian Head since 1908.

Here he had taken violin lessons from Prof. M.M. Touche, the much respected leader of musical activities in that community.

Thus when McDonald moved to Lacombe to take charge of the MitchellCaldwell nursery he tried to persuade Touche to follow.

Success was not immediate but in August of 1919 musical leadership of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was placed on a professional basis by the engagement of Touche as organist and choir master at a salary of $400 per annum.

The written contract stipulated that he put on at least two public concerts during the ďŹ rst winter with proceeds going to the church.

It also stipulated that he provide all music except hymnaries and would pay the wages of any accompanist he might engage on occasions when he could not ďŹ ll the dual role.

He was quickly immersed in developing an orchestra, organizing and leading

choirs for the church, giving music lessons and arranging community concerts that featured both his orchestra and his choirs.

The latter under his leadership won considerable fame for the community at the provincial music competitions held at Calgary and Edmonton.

Touche was a man of rare musical skill and dedication which became evident during his ďŹ rst six months at Lacombe.

He gave music lessons, violin, piano and voice; he organized a youth orchestra and ďŹ lled the dual role of conductor and organist for two choirs, junior and senior.

His public concerts ranged from sacred to secular - the latter including such items as the operetta Trial by Jury by Gilbert and Sullivan and featured both his string orchestra and his choirs.

In March 1921, Touche wrote the board requesting a raise stating, “I have performed all tasks set forth in my contract in addition I have paid the evening organist $2.50 per Sunday since last September and given lessons of equal value to the morning organist. “This plus increases in board of $15 per month is the basis for requesting the church engage an organist for both services leaving me free to direct both choirs and use my voice and violin since I cannot gauge choir performance when playing the organ, nor can I maintain discipline over the juniors when they know I am obliged to sit at the organ. “If I am to proceed please arrange that I am free of both choirs for July and August, work to recommence September 1.�

In 1923 he requested an increase in salary of $20-$25 per month. In their motion granting this request it was stated that “This session will stipulate in writing what is required of the choirs and we insist that Mrs. F.H. Reed be pianist for the evening service.�

His request was granted and he con-

tinued to serve the congregation until he retired June 1928. He retired to the west coast, returning each summer to a cottage he owned at Gull Lake.

He did not want nor could he afford a car so his annual pilgrimage to Lacombe was made by bicycle; surely a singular feat in the era.

People today might say that riding a bicycle from Vancouver to Lacombe is no great feat.

A lot of people do it. But picture if you can the nature of the road he traveled. It was not paved. At best it would have been coarse gravel.

There was no Roger’s Pass. Instead there was the Big Bend Highway which headed west at Golden to get around the head of the mighty Columbia River before turning back to Revelstoke.

As for the bicycle, one needs only to contemplate riding a single speed, narrowrimmed, leather-seated antique bicycle of the 1920s instead of today’s version ďŹ tted with multiple gears and cushioned seats.

The contributions he made to the musical fabric of Lacombe were not limited to his choirs and the huge library of choral music he purchased for St. Andrew’s.

His ďŹ rst pupil on the violin, McDonald, earned distinction as a virtuoso â€˜ďŹ ddler’ reputedly winning every ďŹ ddle contest he entered.

In 1938, at age 68, he won for the third time the Inskip Cup emblematic of ďŹ ddling supremacy in Central Alberta. TwentyďŹ ve ďŹ ddlers competed in this event before an audience of 700.

McDonald came to Lacombe to manage the Mitchell-Caldwell nursery but very soon he was the owner.

McDonald Nurseries quickly established a Canada-wide reputation for the excellence of its products and its landscaping services, a reputation that endured for almost three-quarters of a century.

City takes first steps to address housing problem

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express While the results of Lacombe’s Housing Needs Assessment may not have been the most uplifting, it is an issue the City is already addressing.

At its regular meeting last month, City council heard a report from Another Way Consulting regarding Lacombe’s housing analysis. According to the report, Lacombe is in dire need for more housing, affordable housing and dense residential zones in particular.

Norma MacQuarrie, chief administrative officer for the City, said that doing the analysis was an essential first step in addressing Lacombe’s housing problem.

“It’s critically important that we be informed.” She added that the City needed to know, as best as possible, what Lacombe’s housing stock was comprised of.

Deputy Mayor Wayne Armishaw said he found the information in the presentation “extremely valuable” and added that he will be reviewing the report closely as the City and council move forward with addressing this problem.

“I can certainly see that there is a need there,” said Armishaw.

“That may come out when the

numbers are crunched a bit further.”

Through the study, the City now knows that Lacombe has a less than 0% vacancy rate at 0.04 said MacQuarrie. She added that the study also pointed out that much of Lacombe’s existing stock is not affordable, with many residents spending more than 30% of their income (which is considered the cut-off for accommodation affordability) on housing and some even spending in excess of 50%.

Armishaw mentioned one concern of his own was how many Lacombians are over-housed, meaning living in a dwelling size that does not match the number of occupants. He said that these finding may show developers that there is a need for higher density residential areas in Lacombe and might encourage them to build such developments.

MacQuarrie mentioned that Lacombe’s housing needs directly affect its ability to encourage economic growth, in particular the commercial growth that Lacombe also desperately needs.

“It’s not possible to have those commercial businesses in Lacombe,” said MacQuarrie. “Because the employees in those businesses have nowhere to live.

tend to build lower-density developments because it is easier for them to recover costs and make a profit and the City has not required them to build to a higher density.

There are a number of options the City can pursue to address this problem. For example, the City could look at density bonusing, where if developers achieve a set density they are rewarded

through relaxation of fees and such.

The next steps for the City regarding the issue are to continue to consult with stakeholders in the community, said MacQuarrie. This will be done over the next three months. Scavenger Hunt Clue #2 An Outline Plan goes into

Outline Plan. more detail than an ASP and focuses on a much smaller area. An Outline Plan is required to meet the goals and objectives found in the Area Structure Plan and the Municipal Development Plan. The Outline Plan becomes the design for the new neighbourhood which will be created through land use zoning and subdivision.

One example of a type of land use is residential. The Area Structure Plan highlights areas that are suitable for housing and the overall requirements for types of housing and density. The Outline Plan goes into more detail and determines the different types of housing (single detached, semidetached, townhouse, apartments, etc.) that will occur in a specific neighbourhood. This includes meeting the density requirements and having different types of housing to meet the different needs of residents.

As we move forward and update the Municipal Development Plan, we will need to make sure that the Area Structure Plans continue to follow the needs and priorities of Lacombe. While some of the Area Structure Plans have seen a large amount of development, other areas have yet to be developed. There will be opportunities to reflect on what is proposed and rethink some of the development ideas.

For this week’s scavenger hunt we challenge you to look at three (3) Area Structure Plans and let us know which plan has not seen any development? We encourage you to reflect on the role Area Structure Plans have in shaping new neighbourhoods within the City of Lacombe.

Over the last few weeks many different topics have been discussed looking at where we live, work and play. An Area Structure Plan (ASP) brings all of these topics together and creates a vision for a specific area of the community. They also create goals for land uses and how undeveloped areas can become new neighbourhoods within the City of Lacombe.

The City of Lacombe currently has three Area Structure Plans: the North Area Structure Plan, the South East Area Structure Plan and the West Area Structure Plan. Each of these Plans provides long term planning goals for an area. They identify major roadways, infrastructure requirements, locations of parks, schools and trails and they determine the types of land use that would be appropriate.

Area Structure Plans are important because they provide guidance for areas in the community that will become developed.

They meet the requirements set forth in the Municipal Development Plan but they also create new requirements that are specific to an area. The overall goal is to provide direction for new areas of development that connects to the existing community.

When a person owning land decides to move forward with development, they will use the ASP as a guide for developing an

Part of the reason Lacombe has not been able to provide enough housing is because it has not been able to achieve the desired density in some of its residential zones.

ARTS & LEISURE Christmas concert to benefit Christian Life Orphanage

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It’s Christmastime again and that means it’s also time to sing.

Central Alberta Home-School Choir, joined by Rosedale Valley Strings with Debbie Zepick at the helm is holding a series of benefit concerts from Dec. 1315.

See Amid the Winter’s Snow is a concert to raise funds for the Christian Life Orphanage in Mwanza, Tanzania playing in Red Deer, Stettler and Camrose.

Carol singing has long been a Christmas tradition.

Lyndall Cave, who has been a member of the choir since its beginning in 2007, said that doing such a concert at Christmastime just makes sense.

“To me, Christmas and singing just go together.”

Cave said the concerts have always been done over a number of nights in different localalities. What has changed is the number of participants.

The first year the choir held a Christmas concert there were between 30 and 60 singers. This year, there are 130, said Cave.

She added there are so many young singers in this year’s concert that there is also a junior choir.

Cave said the choir started from a core group of singers and then grew to include their siblings and friends.

Zepick is also to credit for this growth, added Cave.

“Mrs. Zepick makes choir a lot of fun,” said Cave.

There are actually two separate groups that make up the choir, said Cave. She explained that one group practices in Lacombe and the other in Camrose. Before starting the concerts on the weekend, both groups are brought together the Thursday before the concerts begin for “One crazy rehearsal,” said Cave.

Part of what makes doing the concert such a memorable experience is the size of the choir, said Cave. She added that it is also part of what makes the music sound so good.

“I love singing,” said Cave. “Singing with that many people is a great experience. You just don’t get the same kind of feeling or full sound from a smaller ensemble.”

See Amid the Winter’s Snow includes a number of different Christmas carols.

Cave said a lot of it is contemporary music and a fair number of songs with segments of traditional carols. She added there are also a few African-inspired songs, some gospel and even a few originals written by Zepick.

“Mrs. Zepick always picks really neat stuff to sing,” said Cave.

She added that there are a few instrumental pieces performed by the orchestra alone as well.

Central Alberta Home-School Choir has been doing benefits for the Christian Life Orphanage since 2009 when they one of the orchestra’s members came in contact with the orphanage, at the time just run by one couple who lived in a separate house.

Now, through these benefits concerts and Zap! Theatre, which Zepick co-directs, they have helped build a proper dormitory for the orphans. Future plans include building a separate kitchen building and bringing solar power to the orphanage, said Cave.

Central Alberta Home-School Choir will perform See Amid the Winter’s Snow at Calvary Pentecostal Church in Camrose starting at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, New Life Christian Reformed Church in Red Deer starting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 and Stettler Performing Arts Centre in Stettler starting at 3:30 p.m.

A free-will offering will be taken with funds to benefit the Christian Life Orphanage in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Harpdog Brown marking milestone in a big way

Few have tackled the smoky magic of the blues quite like Harpdog Brown, and he’s thrilled with a new band configuration that explores his beloved genre like never before.

Having been in the business as a touring and recording artist for more than 30 years, Brown has shared the stage with such greats as Matt ‘Guitar’ Murphy, Pinetop Perkins, The Powder Blues Band, Jack de Keyzer and the late Dutch Mason to name a few. Brown’s latest recording Naturally was voted the number one Canadian Blues Album of the year by the Blind Lemon Blues Top 20 of 2011.

With the new band, which formed this past spring, Brown has come full circle in reconnecting with early mentor John Hunter who began to have a powerful influence on Brown when he was in his early 20s.

“He sent me in the right directions in learning this language,” explains Brown.

These days, George Fenn has brought his formidable chops to Brown’s new venture as well. Rounding out the band is Jordan Edmonds, who Brown says holds down the guitar like an extraordinarily seasoned old pro.

“He’s really about the juice and the roots of Chicago mid-1950s blues. It’s right up his alley and it’s where his head is at.”

But Brown called him to fill in back around 2000, and Hunter found himself pulled back into music with gusto. And it led to Hunter and Brown doing a couple of dates together this past June. “We did this show off the cuff, and I was amazed.

with these guys, and I said you guys should really be my band. That’s kind of how it started.”

And it’s been a richly creative journey since.

“I’ve had people who have seen me with this band – people that have known me for 20-plus years – come up to me and say ‘I’ve never seen you so on your game and full of life in all the years I’ve know you’,” he adds. “I’d de-

lighted. How could a guy who is almost 53 years be so excited? I’m playing my ass off. It was like that almighty Stanley Cup team that comes together.

“And it excites the hell out of me to have John back in the fold.”

Brown has always had an easy rapport with audiences, which all the more fuels his ability to connect.

Canada’s truly gifted blues artists. He’s also a lifer in the world of musical gypsies, traveling near and far to share his talents in story and song. As to his early days, he started playing instruments before he even knew what they were.

As a youngster, his mom would plunk him down with a lap steel guitar and he would come up with all kinds of stuff. That curiosity and attraction to creating only grew stronger as the years passed.

In his teens he landed his first gig as a guitarist with a singer. The guys would open for comedians, and although it wasn’t exactly where his heart was it was during times like this Brown began to see his ability to connect with audiences.

Next up he joined a rock band which further solidified his love for touring.

He eventually settled into the genre that would truly fit – the blues. It’s heartfelt nature, rife with honesty and authenticity, is what has been so compelling to him over the years.

These days, besides eagerly hitting the road, the guys are putting the finish-

ing touches on a project for release next year.

“We just finished a live off the floor recording session here in Vancouver, and we have 14 potential songs to go on the album.

It includes eight of nine originals that we have collectively written as well.”

He’s thrilled with the results thus far. “It’s so clean and natural – we did it with no overdubs, and we did it collectively – old school – where we miked up the room and miked up ourselves, and stood in a circle in a big studio. Out of that we have definitely 12 or 13 tracks for the new album.”

He’s found a path in life that has perfectly suited him. “All my life I’ve been drawn away from the ‘regularities’ of life – I think I was born with gypsy blood.

I don’t like boredom. I like being busy and I like change. So ultimately, I stumbled into the place I really belonged, which is where I’m now.

“And when I stumbled into blues music, that’s the time I felt like I really did belong,” he adds. “The blues could never fail me, and never would.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

SPORTS Rockets blast Raiders in hard-hitting game

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express In a rough n’ tough game on Nov. 28, the Lacombe AA Bantam Rockets defeated the Rocky Mountain House Raiders in a 7-5 victory.

Lacombe came out strong and commanded the ice in the first two periods of the game, establishing a strong 4-2 lead by the end of the second period. Within the first three minutes of the third, the Rockets scored another two points to grant themselves even further insurance.

However, the Raiders were not about to let the Rockets have the win that easily.

Rocky Mountain House shifted their game and became more aggressive and tougher on the puck. As a result, Lacombe was forced to step up its game as well.

With the Raiders stepping up their game and thereby forcing the Rockets to do the same, the already physical game became even more so and tempers rose leading to more penalties and nearly causing a brawl to break out after the final buzzer.

“Anytime you start hitting like that, tempers are going to rise,” said Sheldon Klessens, head coach of the team.

Several penalties in the third against Lacombe gave Rocky Mountain House the upper hand. While the Rockets were not able to score on any of the power plays, they did gain momentum and wore down the Rockets defence and were able to score three goals elsewhere in the period.

Realizing they would need to keep up to maintain their lead, the Rockets were able to dig deeper and summon the effort needed to stay ahead, even managing to score one more goal before the end of the game. By keeping pressure on the Raiders in their own end, the Rockets were able to force them into making poor plays and capitalized on those opportunities.

Klessens said pressure, combined with a lot of shots on net allowed the Rockets to keep their lead and come out on top at the end of the game.

With the win over Rocky Mountain House, Lacombe now boasts a 6-3-1 record.

Klessens said there are some tough teams in the league that have proven quite a challenge for Lacombe, but added the rockets have managed fairly well to fend for themselves.

“We’ve been up and down a little bit,” said Klessens. “But for the most part we

Skating, playmaking and the ability to pressure opponents are two of the team’s greatest skills, said Klessens. He added that the Rockets have a particularly good fore-check that has allowed them to maintain control in the offensive end.

discipline is one of the biggest weaknesses that the team will have to overcome, saying that Friday night’s game wasn’t the first time the Rockets had run into penalty trouble. Other than that, Klessens said the team is pretty solid. There is an even split between veteran and rookie players and most of the team have played with each other in the past, making for good relation-

ships between players.

“They are all good friends, they get along together fairly well,” said Klessens. “They have all been playing together for a lot of years and it definitely helps out.”

CITY GEM - Lacombe Memorial Centre, at the heart of the City, is the centre piece of Lacombe’s light displays and was lit for the first time during the festival. It will remain lit throughout the holiday season.

Even in the darkest of winter nights, there can be a bright side.

Lacombe held the third annual Light Up the Night festival last weekend. Despite chilly evenings, all the events were well attended and the festival was a great success, officials said.

Things kicked off on Nov. 28 with the Tim Hortons Santa Claus Parade. Those in attendance were packed shoulder-to-shoulder on the sidewalks along the parade route.

Standing still and shivering proved worth the wait though, as the parade really did light up the night with some incredibly bright floats and of course, an appearance from the big man in red himself.

Also on Thursday night was the Moonlight Madness shopping event where several of Lacombe’s local businesses were open late offering discounts and deals for Christmas shoppers. At the Lacombe Memorial Centre, the home-based business fair and the Christmas Farmer’s Market offered further shopping options. The LMC’s spectacular light display was lit up for the first time Thursday night as well.

On Friday, Lacombe attempted and succeeded to break a world record by arranging 889 people in a distinct Christmas tree shape at ME Global field. For awhile, it looked like Lacombe would be short by a few people but organizers managed to drum up a few more bodies at the last minute.

After setting a new world record, Lacombians headed out to the Lumenight event to enjoy ice sculptures, glow crafts and fire performers. Of course, no Lacombe festival is complete without fireworks and Light Up the Night was no exception as Lacombe’s night was lit up once again with a fantastic display.
