WALTER STRONG The Board of Directors of Comfor Management Services Limited (CMSL) provided clarification of issues surrounding the recent announcement of profit sharing. Burns Lake Community Forest manager Kerry Martens provided answers on behalf of the CMSL board of directors.

Does this [profit sharing] mean that there are no funds available for community grants?

No, the board has agreed in principal to a new donations policy and this will be provided to you in the immediate future.

How did the board arrive at the decision to share profits rather than take community grant applications?

The Board has the intent of doing both. Profit sharing and donations to the public are part of CMSL company practice.

Are there expectations on the part of bands and the village to spend the money in a particular way, or is it cash straight into general revenue?

This question needs to be directed to the Village of Burns Lake, the Wet’suwet’en First Nation and the Burns Lake Band.

Will there be a downfall in the annual allowable cut (AAC) next year?

Yes, our AAC drops from the current 260,000 cubic meters per year to 100,000 cubic meters per year starting in January 2014. We will also be starting another Timber Supply Review in 2014 to help determine a new AAC going forward.

Is there a new policy in place to replace old policies and procedures?

If so, could we have a copy of the new policy? If the policy remains the same as before, where can we find a copy of Comfor policies now that the ...see COMFOR ▼ P5

Burns Lake link in west coast chain

Burns Lake prosperity from port expansion a tough sell to local businessman Walter Strong

You may have noticed a steady increase in the volume of rail traffic coming through Burns Lake over the past several years. A lot of it is tied to the steady rise of traffic through the Prince Rupert port since 2005.

From a total of about 4.5 million tonnes of total shipping weight in 2005 to 22.3 million tonnes of traffic in 2012, the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) expects the trend to continue once various expansion projects come online.

Gateway 2020 is the PRPA’s 10-year expansion plan encompassing all projected developments. The expansion would accommodate expected increases across the range of bulk products shipped out of the Prince Rupert port.

By 2020, assuming natural gas projects slated for Prince Rupert, and assuming increases in coal and forestry shipments come online, the port is expected to handle up to 90 million tonnes of bulk product every year.

Most of the current loads are for energy products, like coal and pellet fuel, and containerized forest products. Energy and

forest products account for a little more than three quarters of total tonnage, while consumer goods, and other containerized exports and imports make up the rest of the shipping volume.

Ken Veldman, Director of Public Affairs for the Prince Rupert Port Authority was in Burns Lake last week for a public presentation and meeting with locals.

He said Asian and international demand for resource and energy products - coal, forest products, potash, and natural gas - is booming, but there is a ‘west coast crunch’ where the supply chain pinch is felt in Prince Rupert.

“People are looking to Prince Rupert to provide the solution to the capacity challenge,” Veldman said.

Increased capacity in Prince Rupert means increased traffic through Burns Lake. Although a large percentage of projected increases come from proposed natural gas pipelines terminating in Prince Rupert, rail traffic is expected to increase significantly.

Coal shipments are expected to increase from the current 12 million tonnes per year to over 24 million tonnes per year by 2014. That doubling of rail traffic for coal alone will have a significant impact on the number of trains going through Burns Lake.

According to Veldman, port-related supply chain jobs account for approximately 2200 workers, with only one third of those workers based in Prince Rupert. The rest - CN rail workers and logistic support personnel are included in Veldman’s figure are spread along the supply chain.

Regional industry, like forestry in the B.C. interior and through-out the North-

west or coal mining in Northeastern B.C., is crucial to the success of the port. Strong industries throughout the province mean a strong port, Veldman explained.

“Our prosperity is dependent on Burns Lake’s prosperity,” he said.

While Veldman’s prosperity comment was meant to reflect the PRPA’s recognition that its export business is tied to the fortunes of provincial and interprovincial resource industries, one local business owner in the audience that evening took exception to the implication that port expansion automatically meant a benefit to communities along the transportation corridor.

Bob Schneider, owner of DTU Industrial Supplies in Burns Lake, questioned the value of the coastal port to local business when economies of scale mean that businesses along the transportation corridor have no access to containers unloaded in Prince Rupert.

“I try to import stuff out of China, and do you know where they unload it… Edmonton? I have to pay to get it trucked back to Prince George. We can’t even take a truck into Prince Rupert to get the container off the ship and bring it to Burns Lake.”

Although containers can be off-loaded in low volumes in Prince Rupert, the costs are prohibitive.

“What prosperity is it to Burns Lake?”

Schneider asked. “Everybody benefits except for the people who have the real estate the trains roll through. When there’s a container coming from the west, we should have a way to have it brought to our location and reduce our costs. We ...see WEST COAST t P5

Burns Lake is in the midst of substantial renewal, whether you think of the rebuilding of the Babine mill, the construction of a new hospital, the ongoing downtown revitalization project, the expansion of the Tom Forsyth Memorial arena, or the restructuring of the Burns Lake Commu-

nity Forest (BLCF) Each project is innovative in the root sense of the word; to alter or renew.

The new Babine mill won’t be the old one, and for good reason. The situation in the forest has changed enough that previous industrial models no longer represent the best approach for handling post-pine beetle B.C. The announced shuttering of the Houston Forest Products mill put an exclamation point on that fact.

We saw last week with the announcement of a potential new mill in Houston that nimble local entrepreneurs are still able to make something of a dwindling forest resources in the face of a market increasingly driven by large players who exercise what may turn out to be unprecedented control over a resource not owned by them.

Another potential source of renewal on a regional level is found in the proposal by the board of the Lake Babine community forest as outlined in this week’s paper. Although the project is still in early days, it’s a worthy idea in need of collaboration and a strong financial plan.

We can’t wait for someone to come in from elsewhere and solve our regional challenges. The concerns and constraints we face can only be solved by local people who understand the regional potential, and more importantly, care deeply about its future.

Even if the innovation centre project doesn’t fly, putting the idea out there as a proposal is a step towards addressing economic challenges that may be just around the corner.

The ongoing restructuring of BLCF has the potential to be a renewal of one of this community’s most important assets; a forest resource parcelled out from commercial interests to serve the needs and vision of the Lakes District.

As a communal resource, any revision of community forest policy naturally attracts the scrutiny of anyone concerned with the role of the BLCF in the community’s future. It has been crucial to the development of many important Burns Lake and District projects, like the Boer Mountain biking trails, but it has also been a great supporter of smaller clubs and projects.

It appears that the restructuring of BLCF is coming to a conclusion, with 2014 pegged as the year for completion.

Without knowing the details or even the proposed details of what the new BLCF policies will be, some will wonder if the payment to the village amounts to a new policy regarding how community forest funds are distributed, or how it will serve the mandate of the community forest to serve the people of the Lakes District as a whole.

The more open and transparent renewal processes are, the more informed and satisfied the public will be once all the pieces fall into place.

It will be interesting to see how the challenging renewal of the BLCF will take shape.

It has been, and will continue to be, an important part of Burns Lake and the Lakes District.

Last week I described the inevitable demise of B.C.’s “carbon neutral government” scheme, which continues to take millions from hospitals and schools to fund greenhouse gas reduction projects of questionable value.

It’s like the AirCare program, a pollution solution that sounded great at the time. AirCare soon found itself chasing diminishing environmental returns, made redundant by new vehicle technology and the financial need to save fuel. Public sector carbon offsets will suffer the same fate, growing as a political liability as their effectiveness declines.

All this is separate from B.C.’s carbon tax and greenhouse gas reduction program, another environmental trial balloon that is sinking back to Earth.

Former premier Gordon Campbell’s climate goals officially remain in place: 33 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020 and a whopping 80 per cent by 2050. If the gas boom proceeds as planned, B.C. domestic emissions will not be down, but up substantially by 2020.

New liquefied natural gas export proposals continue to pop up, the latest ones on former industrial sites near Squamish and Campbell River. And with the surge of LNG activity around Kitimat and Prince Rupert already changing the landscape, questions linger about the pollution and greenhouse gas impacts.

As she left for the government’s largest ever trade mission to Asia, Premier Christy Clark dismissed a study that estimated the impact of three LNG plants. That study, done by Kitimat environment group Skeena Wild, assumed “direct drive” technology to chill and compress gas for export. It concluded that three plants would burn two and a half times the amount of natural gas currently used in Metro Vancouver.

Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak relied on the same talking point to reject the study. The technology of powering LNG is still being negotiated, as producers work towards environmental permits, so the total can’t be calculated yet.

BC Hydro is predicting little electricity demand for LNG until after 2020, which suggests the early development will either be direct drive, the industry standard and simplest method, or building one or more gas-fired power plants in northwest B.C. Even if gas usage is only equivalent to one Lower Mainland, it’s plain to see greenhouse gas emissions are going up.

Clark has repeatedly argued that B.C. LNG should get credit for displacing coal in China and elsewhere.

I asked Polak if the international community would accept B.C.’s assertion that emissions from our LNG production shouldn’t count.

“We haven’t said we won’t count them,” Polak replied. “What the premier’s talked about and I’ve talked about is that this whole issue of how one accounts for greenhouse gases in a particular region is one that is constantly evolving. There are regularly changes to the international standards for accounting for these things and reporting them. And certainly the ability for one jurisdiction to impact positively on the GHG emissions of another, we think is appropriately considered in how one accounts for these things.”

Clark visited the Jiangsu LNG import facility in China that could be a key export destination.

Globe and Mail China correspondent Nathan Vanderklippe covered the premier’s visit. He reports that the gas being imported at Jiangsu isn’t replacing coal. It’s being used in addition to coal in peak demand periods.

Clark also visited Japan, another key customer for LNG. The whole world knows why Japan needs new energy sources. It needs to replace production from its disaster-tainted nuclear facilities.

Will B.C. LNG be part of the solution to human-induced climate change? On the evidence so far, the answer is no.

WALTER STRONG The Burns Lake community has suffered another terrible loss. On Nov. 29, Akiko Hofer and her son lost their lives in a highway accident near Prince George.

The B.C. Coroners Service continues to investigate the ac-

cident.

Lakes District Secondary School (LDSS) staff and students have rallied in support of Dirk Hofer, bereaved father and husband, and his young daughter.

A 3 p.m. funeral service is planned for Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013 at LDSS.

As part of the restructuring process the Board rescinded all policies at their Oct. 17, 2012 meeting. The restructuring process is ongoing and all policies are being revised.

When do you expect the comfor website to be back up?

We currently have a local company working on the website and hope to have it back up soon.

How long has it been down?

I became aware that the website was down about a month ago but cannot say for certain how long it was down prior to that.

Could we have a copy of the existing profit distribution agreement?

You would have to request that information from the Village of Burns Lake, the Wet’suwet’en First Nation and the Burns Lake Band.

The previous Fiscal Policy that CMSL had ensured some went to reserve funds, some to community-is that still in effect or is there a new policy on that?

They are all being updated and revised.

The Lakes Timber Supply Area (TSA) includes the Regional District as well.

Why wasn’t some of the 65 per cent given to the Village distributed to RDBN? You would have to request that information form the Village of Burns Lake.

At press time the following questions were still unanswered by the board. Answers to follow in next week’s Lakes District News.

Can someone from the board explain the reasoning behind the board’s decision not to allocate funds to the RDBN? Community polling was done help guide the original comfor policies. How was community input gaged for the revised policies, if not through public consultation?

Can you be more specific as to when new policies can be expected? Are we talking within three months, six months, one year?

Does the board have a date set for the next public meeting of the comfor board?

Veldman acknowledged that the cost of moving only a few containers at a time means there is little incentive for the development of off-ramps for local pick-ups or deliveries, whether in Prince Rupert or Prince George.

“Off-ramps are driven by volume,” Veldman said. “[We] can’t stop in every community or you lose the value of what [the] supply chain represents. The value… is speed.”

Veldman said the PRPA doesn’t have a role in generating off-ramp

logistics. Instead, those logistics rely on private sector investment.

Schneider let the matter rest by pointing out that the nature of doing business in Northern B.C. has been affected by the current supply chain infrastructure, and that the PRPA should have some role in developing growth in a way that has positive results for local economies.

“Right now, we don’t have two-way trade, we have one-way trade,” Schneider said.

“We watch it go only one way. We’re tied to large distribution centres elsewhere, changing the way business can operate in the North.”

Is this new community forest truly your community forest?

Editor: It was with considerable interest that we read last week’s article on Burns Lake Community Forest Ltd.’s plan to distribute $1.5 million to the Village of Burns Lake, the Wet’suwet’en First Nation, and the Burns Lake Band. (“Burns Lake Community Forest to distribute profits”, Lakes District News, Nov. 27, 2013.)

For those of us intimately involved in both the creation and management of BLCF and its affiliated companies, the news – while not a surprise – was disappointing. The Village of Burns Lake, as the company’s shareholder of record, may have a legal right to take possession of the company’s profits, but BLCF and its affiliated companies were never intended to be ‘cash cows’ for the municipality or any other special interest group.

In fact, during the public consultations of 1998, local residents made it quite clear that profits from the proposed community forest corporation should belong to all citizens of the Lakes District, and not the Village of Burns Lake. At that time, the vast majority of those surveyed (many of whom resided within municipality boundaries) were adamant that the Village of Burns Lake should maintain an arm’s length’ relationship with the fledgling company and community forest, allowing local people with no vested interest to manage it for the benefit of everyone within the Lakes District. This philosophy is reflected in the existing Burns Lake Community Forest license document, which states the tenure is to benefit residents of the Lakes TSA. Ironically, the most vociferous opponents of a village-controlled community forest were First Nations. Both the Burns Lake Band and the Office of the Wet’suwet’en only agreed to support the initiative if any proceeds from it were managed by an independent board of directors.

During the community forest’s early years, the municipality allowed Lakes District residents to manage the community forest and its finances without interference. The initial board of directors did not even include formal municipal representation; directors (including those from First Nations) represented the community as a whole, and were expected to act in the best interest of the company and the larger community. This management model was still favoured as recently as 2008, when a comprehensive 10-year public review found that the majority of respondents still didn’t feel profits generated by BLCF and its sister companies should flow into village coffers.

For the most part, the village honoured the community’s wishes – until 2010. That’s when the Village of Burns Lake, without warning, dissolved the 10-member board of directors and replaced it with three appointees from village council and three from First Nations. As one of BLCF’s founding fathers said after the announcement: “That was the end of the community forest as we know it.”

Surprisingly, the village’s dictatorial actions generated little public outcry at the time. A few former board members publicly took council to task for its actions, but for the most part, local residents remained silent. Was it apathy? Certainly, maintaining interest in the community forest has always been a challenge.

Even after ‘coup’ of 2010, there were still a few of us around who remembered the com-

pany’s original vision, and promises made to the community so many years ago. The board removed this last impediment by terminating two long-term employees (us) without cause in 2012, all in the name of ‘restructuring. In retrospect, perhaps the treatment we received was a blessing in disguise; as senior staff members, it would have been very difficult to implement policies that appear to contravene the original intent of the community forest proposal.

This ‘restructuring’, which clearly includes last week’s decision to dividend the municipality and First Nations, has been done without public consultation. While a case can be made for sharing a portion of BLCF’s profit with local First Nations – after all, the revenue was generated within their traditional territories – there is little justification for turning over such a large percentage of it to the municipality. Electoral areas B and E of the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako can make a better case for entitlement; after all, the community forest lies within those two political constituencies.

How the $1.5 million turned over to the village and local First Nations will be used remains a mystery at this point. One thing is certain, though: once the money disappears into the coffers of these organizations, the majority of Lakes District residents will have little say in how it is dispersed.

The Burns Lake community forest has been a tremendous asset. Its legacy is visible everywhere, from the bike trails around Boer Mountain, upgrades to rural community halls, and the interpretive centre in downtown Burns Lake, to name a few. Does this current vision of the community forest – one which sees company managed behind closed doors for the benefit of a select few – have the support of local residents? Is this new community forest truly YOUR community forest?

Editor: As I read this weeks paper, I noticed a picture with people supporting alternative energy sources.

How many of the people at the table used an alternative source of energy to get to the

mall that afternoon and how many of them used their car?

If you want people to believe you actually do support alternative energy sources then please use them, not gasoline or diesel.

Looking back and enjoying the memories

Time sure seems to fly along. It’s a job to keep up with it. Maybe that’s what you get for getting old. Our family moved into the Francois Lake store, post office and home Oct. 1, 1941 and compared to the present date makes it 73 years, almost a lifetime. Our dad homesteaded in Saskatchewan in 1906 and then moved to Francois to start again.

No pavement, no power and very oldtime phone system but it worked. A single line we all shared.

A small ferry making four trips a day in the winter months and five in the summer. A special ferry was $3. In

those many years that we lived there we saw some changes. During the early years folks were still using horses. As the roads improved cars and trucks started to take over.

Our mother had a flower garden in the front of the house with a picket fence painted white and the hitching rail was beside it, it was busy. I well remember the folks that were still using horses.

The saddle horses were Bill Anderson, Jack Jones, and Herb Eaton.

The teams were Jim Jeffrey, Mrs. Drew from Tchesinkut Lake, Mrs. Roberts and Sandy Jenkens.

Some names I have missed no doubt. Things were about to change and fast. All our groceries for resale from Vancouver by train but that soon changed too.

Fred Beach started Beach Truck Lines and had a truck going every week to Vancouver leaving Francois Lake on Monday morning and arriving back at the landing

Friday afternoon. Earl Deeder drove the truck for Fred.

Now our groceries and meat arrived right to the store. What a help that was. The truck was a new five ton International with a K8 series gas motor.

This was Fred’s pride and joy. The stores on the Southside picked their freight from our place.

This worked very well for all of us as there were a number of stores on the Southside. Wholesalers came to Prince George and things changed again. This was much closer, now things have changed again most of the little stores are gone as competition from the big chain stores are impossible for them to compete with.

Then the roads began to improve and overnight it seemed cars, pickups and big trucks and the horse and buggy days were gone. The telephone service improved, then we got power and a big improvement pavement. For a number of

years no matter where you went there would be a little sawmill either cutting lumber or railway ties.

Although we have a number of setbacks things are improving and will continue. The modern ferry that we have now has really given the Southside a big uplift and will continue. We are going to see some great things happening in our Lakes District, just wait and see. Mother used to say many times it was a miracle and I guess it was. I must add on where would you find such wonderful people and friends as we have found here.

Nice time Last Sunday the Grassy Plains church choir dropped in to entertain the residents of the Tweedsmuir House. We always enjoy their singing. Helps us pass the time Our local paper It’s always very interesting with all the local news. Our paper gives a very good rundown of lo-

cal as well as out of town news. It really upsets me to hear the news about our local legion. It seems this is a more or less an ongoing thing. It’s a problem that a number of legions have been having and it’s not getting any better. It’s so important for the welfare of our community.

Very sad news Our whole district has been saddened by the terrible news of the accidents lately. It’s much worse when you know those involved as it seems to effect so many of the family and friends.

How well I remember coming through Jasper park and just a few minutes behind we saw a really bad accident. I have seen a number of bad accidents in my time.

We pay I guess Something else to lower our pocket books and that’s a notice and I quote “Hydro to replace thousands of aging power poles.” We have to have power so I would guess we are going to help pay

for it, time will tell, who knows?

I just wonder if some of these aging poles are the ones that were placed in by the community when the power was put in by the community to Francois Lake and district. This was a good deal. This happened almost a lifetime ago. The community met with BC Hydro and the deal was you get the poles, a certain length, take the bark off, place the poles, dig the holes in as BC Hydro surveyed the line marked were the holes were to be and help string the wire.

Ruth Lord and Bill Harrison were in charge of it all. The poles were left beside the road and as I had a skid horse I could place the poles by the holes. The holes had to be six foot deep. Bill Harrison Sr. set the poles in the holes with his cat.

It all went well and we finished the job in record time and Francois had power. BC Hydro gave a big dinner in the hall to celebrate our venture.

This goes to show what a community can do if they pull together. It was not too long a cable was laid across the lake for the Southside and then power went to the head of the lake, what an uplift it gave to us all.

This was pie in the sky for our local electricians as homes had to be wired as well as any folks who had a business of any kind. It was sure good news to scrap our power plant and the oil lamps, gas and other kinds of lighting. Having power gave us all a new lease on life.

Thought for the day I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older.

Then it dawned on me, they were jamming for their finals or looking for a loophole. As for me I’m just hoping God grades on the curve. Enjoy your days and love you life because life is a journey to be savoured.

Always remember God love you and so do I.

Innovation centre proposed at former Topley school Walter Strong Former Granisle Mayor and current general manager of the Babine Lake Community Forest Society, Fredrick Clarke is the face of a proposed innovation centre project he hopes will find broad regional support.

Backed by the board of directors of the Babine Lake Community Forest Society, Clarke is proposing that the now closed Topley Elementary School building be converted into a centre for industrial and intellectual innovation.

He recently made a presentation to School District 91 at a board meeting and found the school district receptive to the idea of putting unused building to good use. Within the next month, Clarke hopes to fit in presentations to village councils in Fort St. James, Vanderhoof and Fraser Lake, before moving on to western municipalities in the new year.

“What we want to do is have a general meeting after all these presentations and then start the innovation centre,” Clarke said.

Without developing non-resource reliant markets, Clarke fears the region will remain too dependent on commodity prices, boombust resource cycles, and the whims of nature which unleashed the mountain pine beetle epidemic.

“Essentially what this is about is these small communities that only have one major industry, and sometimes only one actor in that industry,” he explained. “If they lose their major player, their community flattens right out.

There's an absolute need to have secondary and tertiary layers of industry.”

Clarke sees the asyet unnamed centre for innovation as a kind of innovation incubator where people or industry can take a concept from idea to reality.

Other innovation centres exist in the Northwest, like the Skeena-Nass Centre for Innovation in Resource Economics, but Clarke’s vision includes a uniquely practical component.

Clarke would like to see the elements of industrial design, prototyping and the physical resources to develop secondary markets right at the Topley innovation centre, if that’s where it ends up.

For example, he’d like to see a wood drying kiln at the innovation centre capable of drying

wood to the low moisture levels required for furniture grade wood.

“If you wanted to make a chest of drawers or a table, there isn't one kiln between Prince George and Prince Rupert that will dry down to furniture grade,” Clarke said.

would be a boost to local secondary markets, the kind of industrial innovation the region needs according to Clarke.

“It's a good thing to start now, and not wait for calamity,” Clarke said. “There are a lot of things you can do to make your community economically more sound.”

The unused Topley elementary school is a starting reference point for the project, but he isn’t married to the idea.

“It would be cheaper than starting with a green field,” Clarke said. “It's quite a bit larger than we need at this point, but if we can get it at the right price it will work.”

This winter, a dedicated team of officers will re-inspect sawmills throughout the province. The sawmill industry has made significant progress in addressing dust management. We want to ensure that progress and compliance with wood-dust management requirements is being sustained.

Safety in BC sawmills is a vitally important issue, firstly to those who work in the industry, and also to their families and communities. Our common goal is to make wood-dust management an integral part of manufacturing operations.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said it's been more than a decade since speed limits were reviewed, and in that time the ministry has invested $14 billion in highway improvements.

Burns Lake Search and Rescue (SAR) manager and Village of Burns Lake emergency program co-ordinator, John Rempel recently received the 2013 Search and Rescue Volunteer of the Year award from B.C. Attorney General and Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton in Victoria.

Rempel has been a volunteer with SAR and Burns Lake emergency preparedness since 1989.

“I had just finished a wildfire plan for the forest service, so I felt well-prepared for the work,” Rempel recalled.

“But there was a lot more to it [emergency preparedness] when you look at all kinds of disasters, not just wildfires. But I put a plan together.”

In Rempel’s time, the fire protection service was not the stand-alone Wildfire Management Branch we are familiar with today.

“In the early years, the [forest] fires were just part of our job,” Rempel said. “We had three fire information teams in the late 80s and early 90s until the fire protection service separated from the regular service. I was in charge of one of those three-man teams for a number of big fires, like the 1994 Garnet fire.”

The Garnet fire was a complicated urban interface fire near Penticton B.C. that spread quickly to over 13,500 acres in size, destroyed 18 homes, required the evacuation of more than 3,500 people, and cost $5 million to put out.

Today, Rempel’s challenges involve smaller scale events, but events nonetheless very traumatic to the people affected. This past summers was a challenging season for Burns Lake Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers.

“At one point we had three searches going on at the same time,” Rempel said. “We had the Takysie Lake one, a

ground SAR qualifications involves some study over the winter and two weekends of field training in the spring. All of the training is done in Burns Lake and there is plenty of opportunity to advance.

“If you [can] get more qualifications, like team leader or search manager,” Rempel said. “There's also all kinds of specialities, like swift water rescue or avalanche rescue. There are all kinds of specialities, [but] flat ice rescue and boat rescue are important here.”

The Burns Lake SAR will have an intake in the new year, and a few potential new members have shown interest. Rempel would like to see at least six new members, a good number for group training, but he said they would train new members one-on-one if required.

Modern SAR work isn’t just working in the field during callouts; it requires people trained and capable of handling the computer and administrative side of a call-out.

“Not only do we need people doing the hiking through the bush, we need people with computer and computer mapping abilities,” Rempel explained. “A few people who maybe can’t hike through the bush but can do some of that kind of stuff would be very helpful.”

“It’s been a lot of fun, but there’s been moments of almost anguish when things don’t turn out right,” Rempel recalls of his long volunteer history with SAR. “It’s a way of giving back to the community.”

Rachelle van Zanten, Rachelle van Zanten, regarded as Canada's best slide guitarist by

Randy Bachman, took to the Massey Hall stage in Toronto last Saturday night to voice a message: 'hey industry - don't mess with our waterways.'

"I sing about what I know," said van Zanten.

"This whole situation with the pipelines, the oil tankers, and the mining proposals that are coming out around my home in northwest B.C. - they are part of my life, and are consuming my everyday thoughts - so I couldn't help but

write about them."

The Toronto Blues Society chose her, among several top Canadian women musicians for its 27th annual Women's Blues Revue, because of her extraordinary musical talent, and because of her growing reputation as a social activist for the environment.

Van Zanten sings about the unity amongst "unusual allies" - farmers, loggers, environmentalists, First Nations, rednecks and hippies - all working towards stopping the projects that threaten their livelihoods and culture.

The Massey Hall gig, she added, was a very special honour.

Statistics from the B.C. Ministry of Education supplied by Skinner also show that LDSS’s graduation rate does not suffer the regional high school drop-out rate suggested by other data crunching agencies.

Since 2008/09, the high school graduation rate from LDSS has never dropped below 80 per cent, and was above 86 per cent for four of those five academic years.

Graduation statistics, Skinner pointed out, are a nebulous figure. For example, if a student moves away from LDSS and doesn’t turn up as a graduate somewhere else, then LDSS is credited with a drop-out because LDSS was the last place the student was registered.

The Lakes District Secondary School (LDSS) in Burns Lake has a strong apprenticeship training relationship with the College of New Caledonia Lakes District campus (CNC).

For more than five years, LDSS and CNC have facilitated opportunities for high school students to take up trade apprenticeship studies and become fully registered as apprentices with the B.C. Industry Training Authority (ITA), all while completing high school with all required academic credentials.

The program is at no extra cost to students; CNC tuition fees are covered by School District 91. Incidental fees may present themselves in the form of textbooks, work clothing and basic tools, but the school district and LDSS co-operate to financially subsidize students in need with extra support to cover those costs.

“We support four or five students every year,” B.V. Driving School Ltd. Amazon Developing Drones Last second shopping for gifts during the Christmas season can be a bit of a hassle, especially when every store seems to be out of that perfect gift for your special someone. This problem and others like it, at least for small packages anyway, may soon be a thing of the past with online retailer Amazon’s new Prime Air delivery service. The service promises to deliver most packages within thirty minutes of order time utilizing small 8 rotor drone helicopters. Of course, this is some years off, as aviation regulating bodies are still refining rules and regulations for commercial unmanned aerial vehicles. Amazon isn’t even the first company to look into doing this, either. Drones belonging to a package delivery company in Dongguang, China were recently spotted during flying trial runs in the city. Sadly it may be some time before we see this sort of service in Canada, as our rules are pretty strict where UAVs are concerned. But maybe eight or ten years down the road you’ll have to wonder if you have to tip the pizza delivery drone.

Muriel passed away peacefully on November 11, 2013 at Gateway Lodge in Prince George, with Karen by her side.

Predeceased by husband John J. Ruryk (1998) and grandson Jeremy Lee, survived by sister Ruth Breitenbach of Sydney B.C., son Ron (Diane), granddaughter Kirsten, daughter Karen (Daryl) Critchlow.

Muriel is remembered for many hours of volunteer work with the Cancer Society, Sons of Norway ski trips to 108 Mile Resort, ski outings and a trip to Norway skiing, lots of hiking and by many friends. Muriel is loved and missed greatly, she is not alone.

A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2014, time and place to be known later. Donations to the Cancer Society in Muriel’s name would be greatly welcomed. Laugh Love and Cry no more, mom is at peace. You are missed.
