Education minister Peter Fassbender said it’s never easy when faced with the challenges this local school district is currently facing. With a trend of declining enrolment and a $1.3 million deficit this year, this district, like others around the province, need to look at all of the options available to balance a budget, he said. “It’s never easy when you talk about change, but you know we have to look at surplus facilities and all of those things and say what is going to ensure the one thing and that is we have the maximum dollars in the classroom for every student that is in each one of the districts.” Fassbender was at Family Place in Parksville on Friday to meet with school administration staff and trustees during a province-wide tour of schools districts. He said he was doing the tour to see the good work going on in districts around the province. He confirmed there would be no additional funding coming to school districts this year, but during the working lunch with trustees, local board chair Lynette Kershaw said Fassbender seemed open to another idea that could help them with their budget issues this year. Interim board in place at the MAC
A new board of directors say the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) was buzzing with excitement as the group was acclaimed on Nov. 25. The Oceanside Community Arts Council has been operating in the community for over 40 years and has owned the top level of the heritage house on McMillan Street, known as the MAC, since 1990. “We ask you, our members, our community, including the municipal government, business community, other agencies and groups like the chamber of commerce and tourism association, to help decide our future direction. It will then be our job as your new board to implement that plan,” new board president Joe Straka said in a news release. NO INJURIES: A car slammed into a residence Wednesday evening on Bouman Place off Wembley Road in Parksville. There were no injuries but the homeowner said her youngest child, a seven-year-old, was inside the house and only one metre from the wall that was struck. The homeowner said both of her children were quite shaken up by the incident.

The Parksville White Spot restaurant just isn’t doing enough business to remain open, according to the company. “The lease is up May 31, 2014,” said vice president of marketing Cathy Tostenson, “and it just doesn’t make sense for us to continue at that location.” She said the Wembley Mall restaurant has struggled and, with other White Spot restau-
rants in North Nanaimo and Courtenay, it didn’t make sense to renew the lease here. They will be working with the employees to find work at other locations, she said, and they will be open for business as usual until the end of May. “We are not giving up on the market,” she said, and while they don’t have any plans they may consider other Parksville locations in the future. The 85-year-old, Vancouver-based chain has been at Wembley Mall since June, 2000.

Kayaking the ‘deleted’ islands in Hecate Strait

Local filmmaker Richard Boyce has released the first 10-minute instalment of his newest work online. “It takes so long to make a film and I’ve been involved in other Internet projects that get an immediate reaction,” Boyce said of his decision to release Costal Tarsands in online segments. “Watching all the ads from Enbridge — they’re spending millions promoting this pipeline — they deleted (from their mapping in an ad) a 1,000-square-kilometre of islands from Hecate Strait and that just enraged me, so I thought this was the best thing I could do about it,” he said. So Boyce — whose award winning Rainforest, the Limit
of Splendour, is still on the film festival circuit and has recently been picked up for distribution by the National Film Board — set out to kayak through and document what he has called the deleted islands. After spending seven years on his last film, he said it was a nice change to return from a kayaking trip in Hecate Straight in September and already have a mini-documentary online to start people talking and drum up more support. In the first instalment Boyce talks to the captain on the 18 hour B.C. Ferry trip from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert about large vessel traffic in the Inside Passage and gets a look at a memorial on Gil Island for the two victims of the 2006 Queen of the North sinking. “What an amazing place, when the rain stopped and the fog lifted we encountered our first humpback whale sleeping in the middle of a narrow channel,” he said. “Drifting with the

current, it stayed there most of the day, blowing periodically.” “A cruise ship slowed down to allow us, in a tiny little kayak, to clear a channel. I can’t imagine what would happen if we were a 330 meter long supertanker,”
Boyce said. He said he saw more than 100 whales during the eight-day trip and got a minor taste of the treacherous conditions common to the area. He said he will continue to

The Fairwinds development in Nanoose Bay is still edging forward — with some changes to building heights and lot coverage — in a proposed zoning bylaw working its way through the Regional District of Nanaimo. After receiving some concerns from residents, the RDN asked Fairwinds to amend the application, dropping maximum building heights in the marina area from 11 to seven metres and floating buildings to five metres. They
also reduced the maximum lot coverage from 10 to five per cent in the marina zone. The board then rescinded and gave second reading again, sending it on to the phased development agreement bylaw stage before it goes to public hearing. Because the developers want a phased agreement over 20 years instead of the more common 10 it has to go through provincial approval after the public hearing. Police say three people were taken to hospital early Sunday morning when their vehicle left the highway and ended up in a forested area near Parksville. At 3 a.m. Sunday, RCMP from Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services and Oceanside, together with B.C. Ambulance Service and volunteer firefighters attended reports of a serious single vehicle collision on Highway 19 just north of the Englishman River Bridge. Police say the three female occupants of the vehicle had left the road to the right and entered the forested area. The vehicle, a 2007 Mazda 3, was destroyed

by the collision and firefighters had to extricate two passengers from the severely damaged vehicle. All three occupants were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital by ambulance. RCMP say the driver, a 33-year-old Nanaimo woman, together with her passengers, a 29-yearold woman from Nanaimo and a 25-year-old from Qualicum Beach, had serious and significant, but non-life threatening injuries. Get out in nature and help assess the health of local bird populations on Sunday, Dec. 15. It’s the annual Qualicum Beach Christmas Bird Count and more volunteers are needed to join a team in the field or count birds from their homes. “Participants can do something nature-orientated locally that can help globally,” said organizer of the count, Sandra Gray. She explained the information collected will go into the Audubon database, where researches, students and the public can access the results of over 100 years of citizen science efforts. The count has become a family tradition for some, a fun learning experience for others and plain interesting for many residents who will see what sort of birds are in their yards and the greater area. There is no participation fee and those interested in joining are asked to do a minimum of one hour of counting on December 15 between midnight and midnight. Most of the counting takes place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The local BCPQ Count Circle has a 25 km diameter and is centred near French Creek marina. The widest part stretches across the shoreline from the mouth of the Little Qualicum River to Northwest Bay. Teams in the field are made up of three to seven birders who start early in the day to catch birds as they leave their night time roosts, fields, ponds or marshes. Some teams like to go owling before their daytime birding starts and some will listen for owls in the wee hours, said Gray. Other habitats to cover are deep forest, shoreline, estuaries, rivers, fields and city parks. If residents want to join a team in the field they can contact Gray or if they’d like to count their backyard flock they can pick up a checklist with instructions at Buckerfields in Parksville, or a checklist can be emailed. That’s the idea that the board would submit a two or three-year budget, instead of a one-year budget, allowing for a deficit this year which would then be corrected within a couple of years. This was something they had discussed with him in the past, she said. “He reiterated that he would be open to looking at more than a one year budget submitted by a school district if it could show a reasonable amount of a return-on-investment if you will, after a number of years, where you could show it would be filling a need within a school district for continued services to children.” During a 15-minute question and answer with local media before his lunch with staff and trustees, Fassbender said the curriculum in the province continues to evolve, along with society and the economy, in order to provide students with the tools they need for a successful educational journey. Fassbender and his staff are working hard to change the dialogue in society, he said, and the mindset that trades aren’t as good as a university education.

OPENING FOR MEMBERS ON ADVISORY PLANNING COMMISSION The term of office for several members of the Advisory Planning Commission (APC) will end December 31, 2013. At this time the City will consider applications for new members as well as the existing members for the term (2014-2015). The City invites applications for a two-year term on the APC. Commission members are appointed pursuant to Section 898 of the Local Government Act and serve without remuneration. The function of the seven member APC is to advise Council on matters respecting land use and community planning referred to the Commission by Council. Applicants with experience in land use planning, architectural design or related fields would be an asset, although this is not a prerequisite. Failure to launch
T
he local school board seems to suffer from a debilitating dysfunction: failure to launch. Whether it’s straight talk about school closures, passing a strategic plan or selecting a new superintendent, this group of elected trustees just can’t seem to pull the trigger. They say they want to get it right. Doing things in a timely fashion should be part of getting it right. The selection of a superintendent — or lack thereof — is a good example. They have what seems, from our view, a perfect candidate right before their eyes — acting superintendent Rollie Koop. Here’s a long-time resident of the area who has not only raised children in the system, but has been an educator, principal and has held a host of other positions in the district’s administration offices. He’s paid his dues, come up through the ranks and knows the people and issues of the region. He did put his name forward when the superintendent’s office was vacated about one year ago, but this failure-tolaunch board decided to stall the proceedings after a couple of candidates pulled out of the race and all that was left was Koop and one other applicant. Koop isn’t lobbying for the job. And from the little we’ve learned about his character, he won’t be too pleased we’ve singled him out here. He hasn’t called us asking for any personal publicity. And it’s possible the board is holding off on the hiring of a superintendent in another attempt to save money, but there has been no indication of that in a time when the district has been very public about its savings efforts. The most recent public board meeting lasted more than four hours, and there was much left on the table undecided. They even had a recess in the middle of the meeting. A recess? What’s this, elementary school? This board needs to show leadership and do the business of the district in both a proper and timely fashion. Right now it moves at a bureaucratic, makework pace favoured by those who would rather study than act. Like everything else in life, there should be balance. Is this school board seemingly stuck in neutral because its members are afraid to offend? Whether they like it not, these trustees were elected to make decisions, and sometimes those decisions aren’t popular with one faction or another. During the Qualicum Beach council committee of the whole discussion on the Pheasant Glen application to rezone its resort property to allow for 100 new homes, Tanner stood as the lone councillor to present a thorough analysis of the issues. He had obviously taken the time to prepare his thoughts, including the identification of economic issues related to the continued conversion of zoning for tourist accommodation to the more lucrative high-end residential development. He rightly pointed out that prior to his election to council, Coun. Dave Willie was ringing alarm bells, along with the chamber of commerce and others, about the growing deficit of tourist accommodation in Qualicum Beach and its affect on local businesses. Rather than respond to this issue, Willie seemed to shrug off Tanner’s analysis as election campaigning. Instead of real debate actually breaking out at a council meeting, we got a lot of cheer leading from golf club members in the gallery and the all-too-familiar cries of “lets get on with it” from other councillors. Only coun. Mary Brouilette seemed concerned that a comprehensive review process should be initiated. Qualicum Beach taxpayers should expect that such a review will include a full and open debate between our elected officials about the issues raised by Tanner. As for the role of the media in all of this, it is a shame that Harding continues his attacks on Tanner and Mayor Teunis Westbroek. I don’t always agree with Tanner’s positions, but have certainly found him to be a thoughtful councillor who serves the interests of the town effectively. It could be discouraging for others of his calibre to en-

erringTon warning More reports and sightings have surfaced since I was robbed in my own car on the evening of Nov. 14. A thin, brunette, young-looking woman (who is actually in her 30s) has been hitchhiking between Church Road near the CoOp Gas Station and Little Mountain towards Errington. In some cases such as mine, she has made it seem like a dire emergency to have a ride, waving her arms and running towards your vehicle in a panic. I encountered her at Bellevue and Ruffles Road. Another witness recently met her on Leffler Road, offered help, but refused a ride. Smart. They had seen the character sketch I sent to family and friends who posted on Facebook — last I saw there were over 2,400 shares on social media. Our community must be on alert, patiently awaiting Crown council to possibly issue a warrant for her arrest. More locals have allegedly been robbed as far back as Oct. 8 (house theft in broad daylight) and as recent as Nov. 22-23 (again as a hitchhiker). This girl is trouble and hopefully we will know how to work together to dissuade this kind of problem in the future. Stay safe Errington, lock your doors, and if someone needs a ride call the police for assistance.

letters atheists in foxholes We think it is wrong to allow readers such as Shirley Powell (Honourable, Nov. 11) to use letters to the editor for the propagation of their religious beliefs. And, it is wrong to see Remembrance Day ceremonies being hijacked for the same reason. The ceremonies are for honouring soldiers killed in battle, not for praising God, Jesus, The Creator, Jehovah or any of the other myriad gods or goddesses. Contrary to popular propaganda, there were many atheists in foxholes, and to be unable to honour them without always having to publicly invoke mythical deities in the process is an insult to their memories. Don’t fear change Re: letter to the editor in the Nov. 28 edition of The NEWS by Deb McKinley (Pheasant Glen: follow the process). The concerns expressed in McKinley’s letter seem way overblown and unfounded. It seems typical of the “fear of change” that exists in a portion of the Qualicum Beach population. The town council will ensure that due process is carried out and also there will not be a march on city hall by any member of Pheasant Glen Golf Resort (PGGR). Projects of this size always start with a concept — it would be impossible to bring anything more at this stage. If it goes ahead, there will be much work to be done by PGGR and the town in order to ensure the final product meets the criteria the town requires. The bigger issue is what happens if projects like this don’t happen. We are seeing it in Qualicum Beach now because of the lack of investment. There are no new jobs here, the high school enrolment is at critically-low levels and the forecast is worse. The real estate market has slowed in recent years. Without investment to increase the tax base, our taxes will increase at ever escalating rates. Fear not change, fear no change.
As for the new clubhouse we did not get, the owners of PGGR have invested the equivalent of several new clubhouses in course improvements. We have one of the best-maintained courses on the Island. Winter wonderland opens Friday Named one of the 10 best public gardens in Canada by the Canadian Geographic Travel magazine
Tens of thousands of sparkling Christmas lights have transformed Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Milner Gardens & Woodland into a magical winter wonderland, a perfect destination for families and others who enjoy the spirit of the holiday season. The annual Milner Christmas Magic event at VIU’s 70-acre wooded forest in Qualicum Beach runs three consecutive weekends Dec. 6 to 8, 13 to 15, and 18 to 22 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 pm nightly. “This magical light and music festival for the whole family features musicians, storytellers, a Teddy Bear Cottage, refreshments and visits with Santa,” says Geoff Ball, Executive Director of Milner Gardens & Woodland. “It’s becoming bigger and more popular each year, and is fast becoming the not-to-be missed holiday event of the season.” Guests are invited to stroll through beautifully lit pathways and trails, then visit the Camelia Tea Room where volunteers will serve up steaming cups of tea or hot chocolate, as well as desserts and scones for a nominal fee on a firstcome-first-served basis. Sweets, spiced tea and hot choc-
olate, chili and hot dogs will also be available at an outdoor refreshment stand near the restored 1930s-era Milner House. Two gift shops on the premises will allow guests to shop for Christmas gifts, garden items and souvenirs while enjoying a pleasant evening at Milner Gardens. Also inside the warmth and comfort of Milner House, children and families will enjoy hearing stories read by Vancouver Island Regional Library volunteers, and live music in the Dining Room from 6 to 8 pm nightly. Community volunteers began setting up strings of lights throughout the 70-acre site in September. This year, members of the Mid Island Floral Art Club also helped set-up a special Christmas light display. “Volunteers are the backbone of Milner Gardens & Woodland,” adds Ball. “We appreciate everything they do, especially preparing Milner Gardens for Christmas Magic. We couldn’t put on holiday events like this without their incredible support.” Milner Christmas Magic, fun for all ages, is a fundraiser to help support programming and enhancements at Milner Gardens & Woodland. Admission is by donation, and free for members and current VIU students who show their membership card. Shuttle carts are available at the admission gate for people with mobil-
ity challenges. Guests are encouraged to dress warmly and bring flashlights for the lantern-lit walk to the Milner House. Recommended last entry to view the light display is 8 pm. Christmas planning starts in summer
Long time Thrifty Foods’ Christmas decorator Sue Ruescher doesn’t consider herself crafty LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com
In the heat of the summer Sue Ruescher is thinking about Christmas. Christmas decorations that is. Ruescher is the store decorator at Thrifty Foods in Parksville, something she does on the side of her file maintenance job. She’s been working at the store since it opened 17 years ago, and she has done the majority of the decorating, although not every year, she said. She usually starts ordering and making decorations for Christmas in July, she said. “When other people are thinking summer I’m thinking Christmas,” she laughed. Ruescher and her decorating assistants have made all the little Christmas village houses that currently adorn the store, the Candyland-themed pieces like the train, and the new outdoor Christmas containers, made

from recycled material and finished with bright-red branches. She has created the look of a
classical mantle at each of the tills and the store entrance feels like a winter wonderland.
Doug Riederer was the store manager in Parksville for nearly seven years and said every year Ruescher strived to do something better than the year before. “The amount of hours she put in on her own time to decorate that store every year just blew us away, she’s amazing,” he said. Customers would ask if the store had hired a crew of decorators, Riederer said, and he would tell them no, it was just lead by one person’s passion. One of the challenges Ruescher finds is avoiding spending a lot of money while looking impressive. To do that she makes a lot of the pieces at home. In the summer she created a seaside theme with driftwood and starfish, and decided she needed seagulls so she carved them out of styrofoam and used clothes pegs for the noses. They currently live in the seafood section at the store
and they get comments regularly, explained Thrifty’s employee Diane Carefoot. Ruescher doesn’t have a background in design and doesn’t consider herself a crafty person, but she created the decor for two Ballenas proms her children attended. Carefoot said they blew people’s socks off. “It was an ice theme and it was like you were in an ice palace,” she said. Ruescher said she couldn’t create the pieces without the help and support of others at the store, and her “very understanding” husband who often watches her piece things together at home. Her favourite part of decorating is the joy it brings to people, she said. “It’s a lot of hard work but at the end of the day when people come and say they like it, or if it lights up someone’s day, its worth it.”

A small wind turbine on a 5.8 metre (19-foot) mast in a yard in Beachcomber, Nanoose Bay has been allowed by the Regional District of Nanaimo board. “Let me put it this way, most of the opposition live nowhere near the property, the turbine is quiet, not intrusive and it doesn’t block the neighbour’s view,” said area director George Holm after the Nov. 26 regular board meeting. He added: “I don’t believe there will be a profusion of these, I’ve lived here 45 years and this is the only one I know of.”

A complaint from neighbour Andy Lankester brought it to the attention of RDN bylaw control who initially said it was fine and could be exempted as flag poles are from the required setback,

Lee and Lankester both made presentations to the board last Tuesday and brought supporters and petitions from neighbours for either side of the issue. Lankester said he is not against wind power, but this is a matter of bylaw control: “Don’t we have laws in this country?” he said. “That’s not democracy, we got robbed,” Lankester told The NEWS later, wondering why there was no talk of imposing the RDN’s $2,000 fine for Lee breaking the bylaw in the first place. “I don’t feel I’ve won a victory, but hopefully this is the end of this,” Lee told The NEWS.

Born in 1925 in Toronto, he is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Shirley; and will be dearly missed by his daughters Marilyn (Alex Lawryk), Christine (John Popp), Carolyn and Cheryl; sister, Norma D’Angelo and brothers, Ernie and Bill; stepchildren, Christopher Turzak and Laura (Darryle Thompson) and stepgrandchildren, Carlie and Colton Thompson. He was predeceased by first wife Mary (1985) and daughter Diane (1993). George faithfully served in the Canadian Armed Forces for over 20 years, including serving overseas in Metz, France and working at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). During his years of service, he also was a Security Instructor for the Department of National Defence. After retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces, he assumed several security-related positions, including with Corrections Canada and the Hudson’s Bay Company. After his retirement, George moved to British Columbia, where he enjoyed the beautiful scenery and climate of the west coast. George was an avid baseball fan and in his youth, was a promising player who attracted scouts from major teams. He was also a talented snooker player, who took part in many tournaments and always enjoyed a challenging match. Later, he took up bridge and enjoyed some spirited partnerships with his friends at the local senior’s centre. He was a loyal and life-long Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs fan and rarely missed watching a game. George had a wonderful sense of humour and could always be counted on to add a little dry wit to any situation. He will forever be in our hearts. A Memorial Service and celebration of George’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 2013 at St. Stephen’s United Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach, B.C. Erik Hansen, 2013 Our much- loved husband, father, father- in- law and grandfather took the blank canvas of life and created a beautiful masterpiece. Erik had an amazing sense of humour and was enthusiastic about all that life had to offer. He loved his family, friends, God and country, good conversation, pop and ballroom dancing, good food, traditions, Texas Hold’em, boating, fishing, hockey, soccer, baseball games with Dustin, basketball games with Danica, emailing family and friends, a good joke, entertaining, volunteerism, community and world events, the beauty in nature and every living thing. The world was his oyster and he savoured every morsel. Erik owned and operated Parksville Auto Body & Glass (By Accident We Meet) from 1963 to 1981. He enjoyed his work and took pride in a job well done. Erik never missed a day of work in his entire career. Erik faced his death with bravery and dignity and was certain he was on a journey to a more tranquil place. He will be missed terribly by the love of his life for 54 years, wife Shirley, his pride and joy, son Troy (Cindy) and daughter Tracey (Wayne), cherished grandchildren, Dustin and Danica --THE BEST HE EVER HAD. Also mourning Erik’s passing are his dear brothers, Alf (Margit) and family, Fred (Lorraine) and family, and beloved sister, Inga (George) & family, cousins in Denmark and his well-loved extended family of aunt and uncle, brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews and their families. “WE WILL MEET AGAIN – NOT BY ACCIDENT�. Our most sincere thanks to all emergency service personnel for their incredibly gentle and compassionate care, all doctors, nurses and staff at NRGH for their wonderful care. DONNAMAE IRELAND March 26, 1936 – November 25, 2013 Donnamae passed away peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, BC on Monday, November 25, 2013 after a long, hard battle with several health issues this past year. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta to the late Earl and Blanche Dick and is predeceased by her sister, Rita and brother-in-law, Bud Nichol. Donnamae will be best remembered for her compassion for others, her generosity, and her love of nature. Her passion and dedication brought joy and solace to many through the beauty of the gardens she created: not only her own but also through her countless hours volunteered to the Anderton Therapeutic Gardens better known as The Gardens on Anderton. Donnamae is survived by her devoted and caring husband, Gordon Ireland of Comox, BC; two loving daughters, Deanna (Chris) Jackson of Coombs, BC and Ellen Jackson of Spruce Grove, Alberta; son-in-law George (Heather) Ireland of Langley, BC; nieces, Tracy Nichol of Errington, BC and Terry (Greg) Pearson of Port Alberni, BC; nephew Russell Nichol of Armstrong, BC; cousin, Bob Dick of Edmonton, Alberta; and many, many friends. The family wishes to thank Dr Stocks and all the medical staff at St Joseph’s Hospital for the help, car, and compassion shown to both Donnamae and themselves throughout her illness. They would also like to thank Pastor Dave Koleba, his wife, Lydia, and the entire congregation of the Central Evangelical Free Church of Comox, BC who support them in prayer throughout. After a brief illness Tom suddenly passed away at Eagle Park on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Survived by son John (Corrie) and grandchildren Kalan and Emily, also nieces and nephews in Canada and England. Born in Devon England, Tom and his family immigrated to Canada in 1974. He spent many enjoyable years working for the City of Parksville, and in his retirement being in his garden, fishing and traveling to England to visit family and friends. Tom was predeceased in May by his loving wife Laura of 60 years, once again together. A small garden gathering will be held at a later date. Donations to Canadian Cancer Society.
RUBY (JOYCE) HADLEY
July 13, 1922 – November 26, 2013 Joyce passed away in the early morning hours of November 26, 2013, at Stanford Place Care Facility in Parksville, BC. Joyce was well-liked and respected: always family-oriented, she preferred to live so as “not to be a burden to her family� in her later years. She was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, to Mary and Howard Dayman on July 13, 1922. Joyce grew up in Vancouver and later moved to Port Alberni where she met her future husband, Ralph. They married in 1947 and stayed in Port Alberni to raise their family. Joyce was a pioneer in that she worked as a secretary for MacMIllan Bloedel, and later as a sales associate at Woodwards, in an era when women were not common in the workplace. A devoted wife and mother, she always remembered her grandchildren on their birthdays, Christmas, and special occasions. Joyce was an excellent cook – especially of seafood where she put to good use tidbits of knowledge gleaned from parenting commercial fishermen! Her freezers were often filled to capacity with baked items for her family, bake sales, and bazaars. Known as a woman of wisdom, Joyce was always ready with advice and a quick wit. Joyce was predeceased by her husband Ralph and son Gene (Raquel). She leaves behind to mourn: son, Brian; daughter, Miriam; grandsons Shawn, David, Tim and Chris. The family wishes to thank the staff of Stanford Place, especially nurse Sharon, for all their kindness, compassion, ad the gentle goodbyes with which they sent her on her journey. A sombre group of Ballenas Whalers junior football players returned to Parksville Saturday afternoon after a heartbreaking 23-20 loss to Chilliwack’s G.W. Graham in the B.C. high school football championships at B.C. Place Stadium. It was the biggest game of their season played out in the biggest football venue in the province but the JV Whalers lost by three points in the AA championship final November 30. The JV Whalers were hoping to go down in the record books and bring home the Junior AA trophy but despite losing on their biggest stage ever, head coach Jeremy Conn said in many ways there were several victories. “Even though we lost the game I am proud of how our players carried themselves. During the game an official commented on how impressed he was with our team. Also the head coach for the G.W. Grizzlies has sent me an e-mail saying how impressed they were with our sportsmanship and that we were the best team they have played all year and they felt lucky to win that game,” said Conn. Admitting that G.W. Graham was a much bigger team, Conn agreed that their opponents were able to make more plays

especially in the first half of the game where things definitely went the Grizzlies’ way. “Our players were nervous and it showed as they looked tentative in the first half and we had some mistakes that led to us being down 16-7 in the half. But
in the second half we responded and had a late touchdown that pulled us to 23-20 with just over a minute to go. However the onside kick attempt went just a yard too far and we could not get it and G.W. was able to run out the clock,” said Conn.
For a coach taking a team to a field as intimidating as B.C. Place with its giant roof and massive bleachers there is an added challenge of the mental game and while Conn said his players were focused the entire trip they did struggle in the first
quarter. “We had a tough time getting going to start the game as did G.W. and it was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter. This was quite a surprise as both teams are high powered offence and I thought it might be a shoot out. But G.W. got a field goal to make it 3-0 and then a touchdown to make it 10-0.” He said when they got their first touchdown to make it 10-7 the momentum of the game changed and his team started playing hard nosed football. “It was confirmation that we deserved to be there and could do this… it was a boost for us to get going and play Whaler football like we know we can.” At times the Whalers faced an explosive offence and a stifling defence but Conn emphasized his players responded like they have all season. “On fourth and one we could have kicked the field goal but we have a very good short yardage package and have rarely been stopped. Everyone knew we needed to stick with our game plan that got us there in the first place. However G.W. played great defence and forced us to try to take the ball outside but we fell short and our drive was stopped giving them the ball and the momentum back.” See one of the, page A30

It was an uphill battle for the Save–On– Foods Oceanside Generals on Saturday evening as they were on the losing end of a 6 – 2 game to the Kerry Park Islanders. Earlier in the week, the Generals had a victory in hand on Wednesday night against the Westshore Wolves, but a third period lapse saw them lose 5 – 4. “I thought we played very well for 57 minutes of the game, it was just some mental mistakes that cost us the game,” said coach Dan Lemmon. “It’s tough on the road but if we just simplify our game, they don’t score those goals.” The Wednesday game saw two new
faces mixed into the lineup with Devin Warfield and Michael Markland. Both were able to pitch in and help out with assists on the evening. Brodie Smith (1G, 1A) and Connor McNary (2A) had two points each, while Cory Burnett, Travis Flug and Chase Gaudreault rounded out the scoring on that night for the Gens. “It’s definitely been exciting. We’re not getting the wins like we want to but we’ve been getting a lot better. We’re really coming together and it’s helping on and off the ice,” captain Travis Flug said of the newcomers. Saturday night’s game against Kerry Park was a different story. Liam Giroux got the start in net for
Oceanside, who were down early as Kerry Park scored just over a minute into the game. Two minutes later the Gens found themselves in a 2 – 0 hole and that was enough for Giroux to get the hook and see Evgeuni Makarski take over. That change wasn’t the spark the Generals were looking for though, as Kerry Park went on to score two more goals in the opening frame to go up 4 – 0 at the first intermission. Giroux was back between the pipes to start the second period and the Generals seemed a little more focused. With about five minutes left in the second, the Generals frustration came to a boiling point and a line brawl ensued with lots of fists
flying and some penalty minutes being dished out. The third wasn’t much different as Kerry Park stretched their lead to 5 – 0 but Oceanside wasn’t about to quit at that point. Just past the 12-minute mark, Markland found the back of the net and that seemed to pump some life back into the Generals. A minute later, Logan Savard tallied a goal to cut the lead down to three, but it proved to be too much on this night for Oceanside. The Generals are back down island to face the Saanich Braves on Friday and then will be home Saturday night to face the Nanaimo Buccaneers at 7:30 p.m.

With the basketball season taking flight, the Kwalikum Secondary School junior girls are looking to find some of last year’s success. Last season, then in Grade 9, this squad was solid all season and capped off a successful run with a trip to the provincials in Richmond. Friday night saw an exhibition game against the Dover Bay Dolphins, their first test against the AAA team. Dover Bay came away with the 31–14 victory but it was a good introduction to what the junior Kondors are up against this season. Head coach Ruth Stefanek, who’s been with the girls since their Grade 6 year, is looking forward to another season and the challenges they’re going to face. “We’ll have some major competition this year, being a smaller school. We have our work cut out playing against some of the bigger schools this year,” Stefanek said. With just 10 girls, there will be a nice mixture of Grade 9’s coming in for some games with the Grade 10 team throughout the season. “We don’t have a very big team to begin with so we’ll be rotating some of the Grade 9’s in. We have a lot of girls at the Grade 9 level so we’ll be bringing in a few from time to time.” Although the junior girls playoffs aren’t until February, Stefanek is more focused on getting there with the group in tact. The regular season starts in a few weeks and with a small roster, staying healthy is a big part of being successful. “It’s gonna be hard to keep them all healthy and playing, but having the younger group of nine’s will be a big help. That’s going to be our goal though, to make sure everyone is healthy and that they get lots of experience with game time.” There was a bit of a concern about finding a coach for the Grade 9’s this year but Brian Nikula was able to fill that role for KSS. It’s a move that helps not only the development of the younger players, but gives them a chance to gain more playing time at the nine and 10 level. Coach Stefanek and the junior Kondor’s will face plenty of tough tests this season but will be ready to meet. Having this same group over the

Matt Price, double A’s rushing leader this season, kept the Grizzlies on their toes throughout the game. Price rushed for a pair of touchdowns and had 25 carries for 132 yards for Ballenas. The leading rusher in all of B.C. junior varsity football, Price also had eight tackles and a QB sack. Quarterback Garrin McDonnell also found the end zone and scored one of the majors for the Whalers. McDonnell threw for 111 yards on eight of 16 passes while adding 67 yards rushing. He was also a standout on defence with six tackles and an interception. Brendan Harstad was the leading receiver with four catches for 78 yards and finished as the top receiver in
the province. He also had four tackles and a fumble recovery. Austen Hunt finished with 11 tackles to lead the defence. Jonah Hay had 10 tackles. Steven Martin was awarded the team’s most valuable player trophy for the game. Conn said while the game didn’t end the way they wanted it to he couldn’t be more proud of his players. “They are a shining example to me of what a sports team should be when it comes down to the old saying, ‘it’s not whether you win or lose its how you play the game.’ They never gave up, they gave 100 per cent, they supported each other, they did their best and while we hate to lose they lost with class and dignity and left it on the field.” Conn said even though it

was a heart-breaker to lose it was an awesome experience that he hopes will drive them for the rest of their life, knowing they are one of the best teams they have ever had at Ballenas and that was one of the best seasons he has ever enjoyed as a coach. While Saturday’s loss was a tough pill to swallow, Conn is optimistic about their season and the future of Whalers football. “I know we have the potential to be one of the top teams at both levels as we return many grade elevens to the senior team and have a great group of grade tens coming up while the juniors have an excellent group of grade nines returning with an impressive group of Grade 8s coming up from the Oceanside Titans football program.”

Dan Brubeck is recognized internationally as one the world’s finest jazz drummers and he’ll be doing a tribute to another jazz legend in Qualicum Beach this weekend. Dan’s father Dave Brubeck passed away last year a day before his 92nd birthday, but in his long life he was given top honours in both the jazz and classical worlds. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he was designated a Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress and he received the National Medal of the Arts from former United States president Bill Clinton, among many other awards around the world. His son Dan currently lives on the Sunshine Coast and has been a featured soloist with many of the world’s top jazz artists. John Reischman wasn’t exposed to much bluegrass music growing up, but what he did hear on TV piqued his interest in the genre. “Where I grew up in Northern California there’s no bluegrass bands and I didn’t know any musicians, but I was exposed to it through mass media like the Beverly Hillbillys and on Andy Griffith.” When a family friend lent him a mandolin he found it pretty easy to play and thought now he could try that “interesting bluegrass music.” Many years later, he fronts his own bluegrass band called John
Reischman and the Jaybirds which has toured Europe and North America, produced five critically acclaimed albums and been nominated for two Junos and two Canadian Folk Music Awards. John Reischman and the Jaybirds will be performing at the Errington Hall on Friday, Dec. 6. The Jaybirds hail from around North America, with Reischman in New Westminster, guitar player Jim Nunally from the San Francisco Bay area, bass player Trisha Gagnon in Chilliwack, fiddle player Greg Spatz from Spokane, Washington, and banjo player Nick Hornbuckle from Nanaimo. A provocative songwriter and musician is performing at the Acoustic Cafe on Friday, December 6. Dennis Lakusta touches on a variety of issues and events in his music, including Wall Street, the environment, aboriginal issues, the human spirit, children and he even brings in some humour from time to time. The roots and folk music player released his latest CD last year called Zeitgeist 2012, stripping down the music to a couple guitars, bass and vocals with Gerry Barnum, Terry Porter and Nancy Taylor. At the Acoustic Cafe Lakusta will be accompanied by local musician Gerry Barnum. The Qualicum Acoustic Cafe happens on the first Friday of every month at the Rotary House, located at 211 Fern Rd West, at the corner of Beach Rd. The first half of the show is open mic, and following intermission, the feature act. Tickets are $5 available from the Vintage Candy Shop in Qualicum Beach, and youth are free. Seating is limited. Everyone in the group writes original music and each is featured equally in their performances, Reischman said. The group also performs some traditional music, which will include a few Christmas songs in the old-time Appalachian tradition in Errington. Reischman has recently released a
new solo record called Walk Along John, which features the Jaybirds and other guests like Chris Thile from the Punch Brothers. He’ll play a couple songs from that album at the show on Friday. The show December 6 will mark the beginning of a 10-day tour for the group, ending in California.

Echo Players is looking for some young blood. A romantic comedy called Be my Baby will be performed at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach beginning in February next year, but director Eillen Butts needs a young man to complete the cast. The play will already feature five strong actors from the area includ-
ing Rosalee Sullivan and Alistair McVey, but Butts needs a male roughly between the ages of 20-29. “It’s a chance to be involved in community theatre, have a great time, meet some wonderful people and share some great laughs.” While some experience is preferred it isn’t absolutely necessary, Butts said. “It’s interesting now because I’m closing in on almost being 60, and I look at it and think it was a strange choice, but a good choice,” he said. Fast forward a few decades and the Brubeck Brothers Quartet are keeping equally busy, touring Europe extensively last year and this year playing at major jazz festivals in Canada and the United States including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Playboy Jazz festival in Los Angeles, the Monterey Jazz Festival (which his dad had a hand in creating) and the Detroit Jazz Festival. In Detroit the quartet
played their own material as well as some of Dan’s Dads’ material. They even turned one of Dave’s masses into a jazz number. “That was in downtown Detroit with the whole street filled, and it was just one of those incredible kind of moments, all summer’s been like that,” he said, adding all of those concerts were dedicated to his dad. Besides that quartet, Dan has recently put together a stellar ensemble to play selected music his father wrote, with lyrics written by his mother. Much of the material has
been sung by artists like Louis Armstrong, Bette Midler and Roberta Gambarini, but it’s never been packaged together and performed like this, Dan said. “So this group is taking (my mom’s) lyrics and my dad’s music and presenting it all that together and it’s actually been really gratifying and one of my favourite projects I’ve ever done. It’s really great to hear this music in the way it was conceived originally.” His parents pioneered new marketing concepts for jazz such as playing at collages in the early 1950s, he explained.
In that way his mother changed how the jazz industry was perceived, which was formerly associated with dark, dingy, and smoky venues, he said. Dan is coming with a group of stellar musicians to Qualicum Beach because his dad was friends with TOSH’s music director Ron Hadley, and Dan has also become friends with Hadley over the years, he said. Dan has been to Qualicum Beach to perform before at Hadley’s request and when he notified Hadley he was touring with this tribute show, Hadley suggested he come on his dad’s birthday.
“That was a very good thought, I thought,” Dan said. “And I am free for once in a blue moon.” Dave Brucbeck: A Son’s tribute by Dan Brubeck will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on December 6.
