Christmas comes to Armstrong Armstrong kicks off for the holiday season ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff

Admit it: the kick-off to Christmas in Armstrong, during the City’s 100th birthday, would be more special with gently falling snow. Patti Noonan guarantees it. “It will gently snow as Santa comes down the road and will look like a Norman Rockwell painting at around 6 p.m.,” smiled Noonan, weather prognosticator better known as the Executive Director of the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce. The annual Home for the Holidays – Downtown Light Up and Parade, sponsored by the chamber, will take place on Thursday, Nov. 28. “This year it is extra special as we celebrate Armstrong’s 100th birthday,” said Noonan. “We anticipate there will be an extra amount of floats and entries in the parade. I’ve heard a few people who usually enter are making a special effort.” Activities actually begin during the day, as Mostly Minis hosts its petting zoo downtown, and local school children will be down to decorate Christmas trees and visit with Santa Claus. At 4 p.m., the Telus kids cookie deco-

rating booth opens in Spirit Square. The North Okanagan Knights junior hockey team will be playing road hockey and, at 5:15 p.m., you can enjoy the sounds of the Tapestry ladies choir. They’ll sing until around 5:30 p.m. at which time, preparations for Santa’s return to downtown begin. The parade leaves the Village Cheese Co. at 6 p.m. and travels east on Pleasant Valley Road, then circles Spirit Square on Pleasant Valley Boulevard before heading back to Village Cheese. Santa will continue to Spirit Square where he will flip the switch to signal the arrival of Christmas to Armstrong and Spallumcheen at about 6:30 p.m. “It’s the official first kickoff in the North Okanagan,” said Noonan. “It kicks off the home for the holiday season, which begins with lightup. There’s lots of shop local deals throughout the weekend and it then roles into December activities like choral festivals, the skating show and the Caravan Farm Theatre.”

The community works together to make sure that everyone has a good Christmas. The Okanagan Boys and Girls Club, which operates the Armstrong Food Bank is getting everything organized and they’re counting on donations starting to come in. “This is the barest I’ve seen the shelves in the five years I’ve been volunteering here but we know there will be a lot of organizations helping us,” said Fran Brooks. Gail Henderson, who has been a volunteer for eight years, said she wants to see all food banks get support but she reminds people that only donations made in Armstrong go to the Armstrong Food Bank. “When people shop in other communities and make donations there, those donations stay in that community so we hope people will think about our needs close to home,” she said. The Armstrong Food Bank has seen an increase in use over the past year with 846 people helped from January to October 2012 and 1017 people helped for the same period in 2013. The increase is in line with B.C. use of food banks up more than 20 per cent since 2008. “We help an average of 110 people, about 40 per cent of those children, each month and we gave 150 Christ-

mas hampers for families, couples and singles last year. We are expecting to give more than 160 hampers this year,” said food bank coordinator Elizabeth Coss. “The community is amazingly generous over the whole year and especially at Christmas.” A number of businesses, service groups, churches and schools give donations all year with special projects at Christmas. “We depend on that greatly for the Christmas hampers and to help us into the new year. We want to remind people to support the Realtors’ Food Drive Dec. 4,” said Brooks. The Armstrong Legion helps with the children’s gifts for the hamper with the Angel Tree project.

The Perfect Country Christmas Sharing the Holiday Spirit continued People can take a card with the age and sex of a child, purchase a gift and bring it to the Legion so the gifts can be included in the food bank hampers. The Armstrong Knitters make toques, mittens and scarves and some members of the Armstrong Lions are making wooden toys. Some gifts for older youth come from Teens Count Too in Vernon. The Christmas hampers include staples and vegetables, treats, and vouchers for a turkey or ham, and eggs and bacon.

“We try to have the ingredients for Christmas breakfast and dinner,” said Coss. Applications for Christmas hampers can be made now through Dec. 13 at the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club office at 3459 Pleasant Valley Road (next to the post office). Applications should be made as early as possible to allow volunteers time to make up the hampers. Pick-up day for the hampers is Dec. 20.
