The South Fraser Perimeter Road will be officially opened before Christmas, provincial Minister of Transportation Todd Stone told a Surrey Board of Trade luncheon on Thursday. The $1.26 billion, 40-kilometre-long expressway has been more than a couple decades in the making.

“We expect to have a grand opening before Christmas,” Stone said.

“For Surrey and Delta, there’ll be a lot less truck and other vehicular traffic on municipal roads, and that translates into a better quality of life for residents and easier access to businesses.”

The SFPR will connect four highways, running from 176th Street, roughly along the Fraser River’s banks in Surrey and North Delta, before cutting through the rest of Delta to the Roberts Bank Superport.

It’s construction created 4,000 construction jobs and the SFPR will ultimately create 7,000 long-term jobs in Surrey and Delta, Stone said.

“When it opens next month people in businesses in the area will have a whole new way to move south of the Fraser.”

Stone said a referendum with a direct and clear question concerning the region’s transit needs will be held but he didn’t say when. Nor has the question been confirmed, but he expects that to be worked out soon.

“It’s in everybody’s best interest to get to ‘yes’ when the referendum’s held,” he said. “I am

committed to a yes on this referendum.”

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson suggested that the referendum should coincide with next November’s civic elections.

All told, she was pleased with what Stone had to say.

“I heard everything I wanted to hear,” she said.

“I’m very happy to hear that he understands what’s happening south of the river and is prepared to look at innovative solutions for us.”

Metro Vancouver has announced nine private sector proponents with 10 waste-to-energy proposals, one of which is located here in Delta.

The regional government wants to develop additional waste-to-energy capacity to manage municipal garbage that can’t be recycled.

Of the three types of technologies being considered–gasification, mass-burn incineration, and refuse-derived fuel–Lehigh Cement on Tilbury Island would convert garbage into fuel to use for its cement production plant.

Jasper van de Wetering, environmental manager at Lehigh Cement, said that Lehigh’s existing production facility can use refuse-derived fuel and doing so would create no additional air emissions and no post-combustion residue, or ash.

Because Lehigh already uses a significant amount of fuel to manufacture cement, the solution would be mutually beneficial to acquire Metro Vancouver waste to displace the fuel the company is currently using.

Lehigh already has a permit from Metro to burn non-hazardous waste fuels, and has experience in alternative waste burning such as construction demolition waste and passenger car tires.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington joined Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and citizens group VAPOR on Tuesday to call on Environment Minister Mary Polak to reject a controversial airport project that would see jet fuel transported on the Fraser River.

The Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project has been twice delayed by the province over environmental concerns of a jet fuel terminal on the Fraser River. The project’s proponent, the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation (VAFFC), is a consortium of airlines at the airport that needs environmental approval to barge aviation fuel up the south arm of the Fraser, offload it at a terminal in Richmond, and then pipe it up Highway 99 to the airport.

“This should be rejected and there should be a closer look at the alternatives,” Brodie told a media scrum at Garry Point Park.

Smart meter holdouts mobilize as deadline looms reporter

Residents in South Delta are mobilizing in anticipation of a deadline set by the B.C. Utilities Commission to accept a compromise on the $1-billion smart meter infrastructure roll-out by BC Hydro.

Holdouts against the smart meter changeover have until Dec. 1 to sign up for an opt-out program, which comes with a monthly cost of $35 for manual readings.

Heather Colls, a Tsawwassen resident and member of Mothers Against Power Poles, is organizing a viewing of the documentary film Take Back Your Power on Friday, Nov. 29, at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

Created by Vancouver-area resident Josh del Sol, the film explores the alleged dangers of smart meters and other electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that carry wireless signals.

Colls, who is a guidance counsellor at Delta Secondary, said the Delta Teachers’ Association is involved in taking concerns about Wi-Fi in schools to the B.C. Teachers Federation’s annual general meeting in March.

“That’s touched on a little bit in this documentary as well,” she said.

Colls is a single mother with three children, two of whom are

in university, and said she’s concerned with the supposed health issues publicized about smart meters.

“On top of the health issues with the power lines, and the supposed radio towers that’s coming into Point Roberts, the fact that Hydro is going to try and charge me $35 when my bill is only $47, to me that’s ridiculous.”

Colls is among an estimated 60,000 people across the province to refuse the installation of a smart meter, which amounts to about three per cent of the homes in B.C. Many people like Colls claim health concerns or sensitivity to EMFs, although third-party tests have found emissions from smart meters are low compared to other sources.

BC Hydro’s smart meters operate at significantly lower radio transmit power than cell phones and are active for less than one minute for day, transmitting the radio frequency equivalent of a 30-minute cell phone call over its 20-year life span. As well, the smart meter collector uses about one watt of power.

Dr. Patricia Daly, the Chief Medical Health Officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, confirms there is no known health risk and no reason for concern.

The B.C. Utilities Commission announced in mid-October that

The decision came after Hydro applied to the province’s power regulator to recoup $7 million in

capital and operating costs the Crown corporation says it will lose with smart meter holdouts.

Taking cues from the BC Liberals, Hydro offered the compromise in July to allow some people to keep their analog meters, with a deadline of Dec. 1 to opt into the program.

Colls said she’s offered to manually call in her meter reading to BC Hydro every month and the

new fee is a “scare tactic” to get holdouts to give in.

Development eyed for Paterson Park Group wants to create a “village within a village” ❙ Adrian MacNair

A Delta-based group has a bold new vision for Ladner’s Paterson Park and will soon take it to Delta council to try and convince the municipality.

The Delta Seniors Planning Team’s Housing Action Team envisions a “village within a village” that will bring “something for everyone,” according to team chair ML Burke.

She presented the plan at the Philosophers’ Cafe at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre earlier this month to give the public an idea of what’s being proposed.

The vision involves a partnership between the Corporation of Delta and Kwantlen University, both of whom own the undeveloped land at Highway 17 and Ladner Trunk Road. Burke said the current landowners could benefit financially through lease fees and property taxes by developing Paterson Park without having to sell its stake.

The Housing Action Team wants to build mixed housing with condominiums for seniors, townhouses for young families, apartments,

co-housing for all ages, and an education complex in partnership with Kwantlen.

Burke said a small commercial hub similar to the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall would provide on-site conveniences, such as groceries, a bakery, butcher, walk-in health clinic, pharmacy, bank, coffee shop, and other retailers.

The historic oval would be retained for walking and cycling, while designated play areas would be created for children, teens, and seniors, and a fenced-in area for dogs.

The educational facility would allow for classes, workshops, lectures, films, and meetings, with possible collaboration from Kwantlen. Also planned is a large community garden maintained by the Delta Agricultural Society for teaching horticulture, conducting research, and selling produce through a farmers market.

The Delta Seniors Planning Team would also like to see a new seniors centre, along with supportive housing, assisted living, residential care, and adult and child day care.

Burke said the architecture would conform to Ladner’s heritage and make use of green technology, while maintaining the density levels of the village standard.

imity to public transit, Delta Hospital and other medical buildings, nearby recreation centres, and the police station.

Burke said Kwantlen’s board of directors has given approval to explore this project further and may consider a satellite educational fa-

cility on the site.

Kwantlen acquired four hectares of Paterson Park from the Delta Agricultural Society for $3.5 million 20 years ago with the understanding a South Delta campus would be built, but that never happened. Last year the university

stated there isn’t enough demand for a campus in Ladner and that it was exploring selling its portion of the park.

Delta Council has previously discussed the issue in chambers and isn’t interested in the estimated selling price of $12 million.

Brodie also questioned whether or not the consortium was prepared to absorb the added costs associated with preparing for such an incident.

Huntington claims the province’s Environmental Assessment Office cannot independently review alternatives to the project, and said the risk and uncertainty of fuel tanker accidents in the river is too great.

“Unfortunately, our rubber-stamp EAO process has presented the Environment Minister with a Faustian bargain: By Christmas she must decide whether to trade catastrophic environmental risk for tanker access to the Asia-Pacific jet fuel markets,” said Huntington in a press release.

Now entering its third year of environmental assessment, the fuel project was delayed in the spring so that the province could study mitigation in greater detail.

That postponement ended Oct. 10 with the release of two ministry

reports: The Interim Land Based Spill Response Report, outlining conditions for best practices and industry standards, and the West Coast Spill Response study presenting the province’s marine spill response framework.

“The marine report is already in the news for raising red flags about B.C.’s spill response capacity,” said Huntington. “Yet even if B.C. surpasses world-class standards, our government knows no procedure in the galaxy could fully contain a large jet fuel spill in heart of the fragile Fraser River

estuary. It would be a disaster.”

Submissions from Environment Canada have stated that a fuel spill could create potentially catastrophic losses to migratory birds and associated habitats. Just four litres of jet fuel can spread up to 100 metres on the water’s surface, and according to Huntington the current project would have fuel tankers hauling 38,000 litres at a time.

VAFFC’s project director, Adrian Pollard, downplayed concerns about response times, saying they have measured it themselves from

the nearest firehall and it’s well within the eight-minute guidelines.

“We would have self-sufficient, automated and dedicated foam and water suppression systems,” said Pollard.

Pollard added that alternative fuel delivery plans have been examined in detail but admitted the review process is only designed to deal with the option VAFFC has presented for environmental certification.

A amateur historian from White Rocks thinks he has discovered the identity of a mystery hulk that sank in Deas Slough decades ago.

George Duddy says he’s “disappointed” that contrary to popular belief the unidentified ship is not the famous Audrey B, but rather a different vessel named the La Belle.

A Deas Island Regional Park sign has been telling visitors for years that the first viewpoint of the Dyke Loop displays the Audrey B. Built in 1928, the 33-meter boat was used to smuggle rum into the United States during prohibition, but was scuttled in the 1960s to avoid moorage fees.

Duddy was studying Arctic history when he came across the exploits of the Audrey B

and decided to learn more about that vessel.

He was working on an article about the Audrey B for a marine website named nauticapedia.ca when he realized it couldn’t possibly be the mystery hulk in Deas Slough.

“It soon became clear that the hulk wasn’t the Audrey B because the Audrey B had been purchased by a family in North Vancouver and had turned it into a superb and livable houseboat that was anchored in Deep Cove.”

Duddy has acquired archival aerial photographs proving the Audrey B was moored in Deep Cove at the same time the mystery hulk was already sunk.

The confusion arises from the fact the two vessels both have a history on the Fraser River. The Audrey B remained in North Vancouver until the 1980s when it made its way to the Fraser River under new ownership. The ship exploded during a suspected methamphetamine cook and sank to the river bottom just

east of Tilbury Island.

After doing extensive research, Duddy says the Deas Slough hulk was originally an American Navy vessel named USS APc-15 that was involved in the Second World War. The USS APc15 was built at Camden Shipbuilders, New Jersey, in 1942 and earned a battle star while serving in South Pacific skirmishes against the Japanese. After the war it was sold, along with seven other sister vessels, and employed as tugs, fish packers and herring seiners.

As a powered vessel she was first registered under the name Gulf Trader in 1947 by the Vancouver Tug Boat Company with the official number 179077. In 1948 the name was changed to La Belle which stayed with the vessel until 1962 until she was sold to Capital Iron and Metals in Victoria along with four other tugs named La Force, La Reine, La Rose and the Sea Ferring.

The engines were removed

and the hulls sold or converted to fish boats. Although the La Belle at 33 metres was larger than the others, it seems to have suffered the same fate. The La Belle was re-registered with a Victoria home port retaining the original official number as an unpowered sailing vessel under the name Black Trader in about 1963.

The La Belle was sold to Cyril Gardner of Vancouver in 1964, and then Vancouver-based fishing company Francis Millerd & Company in 1969. The last registered ownership was Ronald McMillan of Richmond in 1974.

Nobody is sure how the vessel sank, but Duddy says it was towed there decades ago by Tony Capadoucia.

After years of tracking down ship registries, and poring over the Vancouver Archives and nautical databases, Duddy says it’s still just a hobby.

“It was kind of fun. I’m a retired civil engineer and I got sucked into this thing, actually.”

Residents on both sides of the border plan to hold a public demonstration in Tsawwassen’s Diefenbaker Park on Sunday at noon to protest a proposed five-tower radio array in Point Roberts.

Residents have expressed concern about the potential effects of relocating KRPI radio, also known as Sher-E-Punjab, from Ferndale to Point Roberts in Washington State.

Concerns about blanketing interference of electronic equipment due to the 50-kilowatt signal strength of the towers has led Tsawwassen and Point Roberts residents to call on the Whatcom County planning department to the deny permit.

Although the proposal has already been approved by the Federal Communications

Commission, Tsawwassen’s population was not included in the permit application.

Opponents point to documented complaints made by Ferndale residents about interference of electronic equipment, although those public comments were made eight years ago.

Andrew Skotdal, an engineering consultant for KRPI, said the radio station will have a qualified engineer dedicated to resolving interference issues for both U.S. and Canadian residents. He also pointed to other 50 kilowatt towers in places like Birch Bay and Richmond which operate without significant interference complaints.

An environmental review concluded the radio tower would have no negative effects to endangered or threatened species or pose a risk to birds. The design conforms to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommendations.

A

n d r e w R a i n e s doesn’t look like what many might think of when they think of a typical vegan.

He’s not pale and sickly, and he’s certainly not skin and bones.

In fact, Raines is a former mixed martial artist and kickboxer, and an avid soccer player. He’s one of an increasing number of athletes who are turning to a plantbased diet, not just for ethical reasons, but because it’s healthier and helps them perform.

“A plant-based diet is a nutrient rich diet,” says Raines. “Your body doesn’t

hunger for calories, it hungers for nutrients.”

Raines grew up in Tsawwassen and founded the South Delta FC men’s soccer club, for whom he still plays and coaches.

When he’s not on the pitch, Raines is a holistic nutritionist and national educator for the vegan nutritional supplement company Vega, and will be in Ladner on Saturday, Nov. 30, to give a presentation at Open Space Yoga about “eating for energy.”

Eating for energy means reducing caloric intake while increasing intake of nutrient-dense foods, such as fresh vegetables.

When and how you eat is also important.

DPD warn vehicle break-ins continue in South Delta ❙ Staff writer

Delta Police Department is warning residents to lock their car doors and use an anti-theft device as there has been an increase in thefts from parked vehicles in Ladner and Tsawwassen.

In many of these cases, the vehicles were left insecure and valuable personal belongings were left in the vehicles in plain sight.

A woman reported that her car parked at Beach Grove Road and 12th Avenue had been broken into while she was walking with her children on the dyke. When she returned the passenger side window was found smashed and a purse and large bag of children’s winter clothing were stolen. The purse contained BC driver’s license, bank and credit cards, and Nexus cards.

On Nov. 20, a resident at Delta

Street and 47A Street reported that his vehicle was parked on the street overnight and when he returned he found both front door locks had been punched. A black soft sided briefcase containing his business company cheque and deposit book was missing. The bank was immediately notified and the account was being monitored.

car on Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. while it was parked at 4600-Block Clarence Taylor Way, while her son was sitting in the passenger seat.

According to the woman, a male wearing a bright yellow jacket had used a crowbar to break into the vehicle, but did not see her son as he was concealed by a garment bag blocking the window. Her son screamed as the suspect opened the vehicle and the suspect fled in a grey Toyota van driven by a male

in a grey sweater.

As with any suspicious circumstance, Delta Police urge witnesses to call police and report any incident that is of concern, even if the suspect was unsuccessful at completing their crime.

Carbon neutral nonsense

T

wo days after Energy Minister Bill Bennett announced the demise of the Pacific Carbon Trust, the public accounts committee convened at the legislature to pound a few more nails into its carbon-sequestering coffin. Assistant Auditor General Morris Sydor was there to defend his report from last March that concluded the B.C. government was not “carbon neutral” in 2010, because the trust paid $6 million for hastily arranged offset projects that were not valid.

An Encana Corp. gas flaring reduction project at Fort Nelson and a forest preserve in the Kootenays would have proceeded without assistance from a $25-a-tonne carbon fee imposed on hospitals, universities, colleges and until last year, school districts. In fact they did proceed without this subsidy.

The government continues to deny this, but not many people outside the international carbon offset sales racket believe them.

The Pacific Carbon Trust’s functions will continue, Bennett said. Instead of a board of directors and 18 staff, five people headed by an assistant deputy minister will evaluate projects and bestow millions taken from college, university and health authority budgets each year.

B.C.’s school districts are still paying $5 million a year to offset such nefarious activities as heating their schools. But now the money goes into a “Carbon Neutral Capital Program,” and districts have to apply to get their money back for emission-reducing projects.

This is going so well, according to Bennett, that post-secondary institutions and health authorities will be converted to a similar program in the years ahead.

How is that school program going? Here are some examples.

The Coast Mountains School District around Terrace paid $66,452 for carbon offsets last year. It got back most of its three years of offset payments as a grant to complete a boiler upgrade for its Kitimat high school. Abbotsford and Nanaimo school districts each have to pay about $100,000 a year. They got money back for school boiler upgrades as well, although local school officials say that would not likely have been the top priority for spending, if it hadn’t been for the program that forces districts to spend grants immediately on emission reduction.

Surrey school district paid out $585,000 last year, and also upgraded boilers. Vancouver’s pitch this year was for three electric cars.

Leaving aside the distortion of spending priorities caused by this restrictive tax-and-spend scheme, what happens when they run out of boilers to upgrade? And has it occurred to the government’s “carbon neutral” braintrust that those new boilers are still burning natural gas?

This program is about to be foisted onto universities and hospitals. Does anyone actually believe that heating hospitals and college classrooms is a key driver of global warming? Presumably our carbon czars know that 40 per cent of B.C.’s human-generated greenhouse gas emissions are from transportation, and a few electric cars for school district staff aren’t going to change that. And what happens when colleges and hospitals run out of boilers to modernize and insulation to upgrade? It won’t be long at this rate.

In hindsight, this “carbon neutral government” scheme is perhaps the worst single idea implemented in 12 years of B.C. Liberal government. Gordon Campbell’s grand vision of a province where government sets the green standard and the private sector economy follows has simply not worked.

The NDP presented a motion in April 2012 to relieve hospitals, colleges and universities of their carbon offset obligation. The idea was supported by a B.C. Liberal backbencher, who argued that B.C. should also scrap the carbon tax and quit pretending it can change the climate.

His name? Bill Bennett.

Pit bulls have bad reputation

F

or a dog-loving community like South Delta it must have come as something of a shock to read last Wednesday that a pit bull had been stabbed to death in Vancouver by a 72-year-old man. According to Vancouver Police–and corroborated by independent witnesses–the man was walking with his pug off-leash when a woman’s pit bull took hold of the pug’s neck and began a vicious attack.

Only after failing to pry loose the vice-grip lock that the pit bull had on his dog’s neck, did the man pull out a pocket knife and stab the dog.

The reaction from the public on the web was, unsurprisingly, immediately viral. For whatever bizarre sociological phenomenon, news stories about dead dogs outrage humans. But I digress.

Not only was the online reaction viral, it was bitterly contentious. Dog lovers of all kinds lamented the death of the dog, but some viewed it as a necessary maneuver to save the pug.

Pit bull lovers, however, were aghast. The “huga-bull” community were defensive and skeptical of reported events, suggesting excessive force was used and that external factors may have played a part. This segment of dog society is more than acquainted with negative press.

That’s because these dogs have a “rep.” Whether

unfairly or not, pitties have the highest media profile because even though their aggressiveness or frequency of attacks may rate below other breeds, the results are much more severe.

For instance, small dogs like Chihuahuas might nip or bite more, but can’t do anywhere the damage of a pit bull at full blood lust.

Two years ago I wanted a dog for my family so I went to the Vancouver shelter off Clark Drive.

Since I’m from Ontario, where the breed is actually banned, I was surprised the shelter offered us a pit bull breed to adopt. She was a beautiful Staffordshire bull terrier with a wonderful temperament and demonstrable affection for children.

It seemed perfect since my children were three and nine at the time. For the first 24 hours the dog was everything a guy could want. Not overly energetic, affectionate, obedient, and very gentle with my three-year-old. In fact, she could walk the dog herself because the dog intuitively knew not to pull hard on a toddler. But then we went to the park and the dog saw a bike. She went insane trying to get at it. It took everything I had to hold her back. It wasn’t an isolated incident.

Back home I fired up the lawnmower and the dog immediately attacked the wheels. She picked the lawnmower up in her teeth, shook it back and forth, and slammed it down. I kid you not.

Sad as it is to say, we had to return the dog to the shelter. These dogs just have that reputation.

Five precious minutes

We in Delta must congratulate the mayor and councillors, who with noble intention, gave the option to each of the good folk of South Delta, give precious minutes to voice their concerns over the Southlands proposal of Century Group.

After all, being so noble in their intentions, and having not yet made up their minds as to how they would vote, they did the right and correct thing in listening and hearing the “voice of the people.”

A less democratic and noble group would have already made up their minds about they would vote on the issue but provide, nonetheless, these previous five minutes to the good folk as a ruse to placate them and merely allow due political process, when in their minds it was already a “done deal.”

For three days and three nights [editor’s note– it was actually five days and four nights] our mayor and councillors sat, with open hearts, listening to the impassioned pleas of both sides of the issue and not one of them, as far as I could determine, fell asleep in the process. Now, I state emphatically, from my own experience, it is simply not possible to stay awake under such circumstances unless you are truly sensitive and deeply interested in what people have to say.

This idea of the five precious minutes was an insightful and compassionate response to the deep feelings of the people. We the people spoke, knowing and believing that we had been given a chance to participate and to have an influence in this political process that was going to influence us all. We believed that in speaking up we could truly make a difference. Had the mayor and councillors not been sincere, transparent, and moved by what we had to say in allowing us this moment in time to share our inner-most thoughts and feelings, what would have been the point of it all?

I was moved, in the most part, by the intelligence, sincerity, and truly humble manner of the ordinary men and women who spoke, and the great numbers of concerned citizens who turned out. I could only imagine that if those five minutes were planned as an act of appeasement, or a mere empty political gesture what a thoughtless mistake would have been committed.

Let us not think that our very own mayor and councillors would stoop to such tactics. It brings to mind Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar when Mark Antony speaks and says, “For Brutus is an honourable man; and so are they all, all honourable men.”

Get in the know about GMOs

K

udos to the Vancouver Island community of Metchosin for bringing forth a resolution asking the provincial government to ban plants and animals produced by the use of genetic engineering.

The resolution, which was narrowly passed at the fall Union of B.C. Municipalities meeting, will require discussion and endorsement before it could wind its way to Ottawa.

Whether Ottawa would do anything, especially since it claims genetically-engineered foods are safe and don’t require special labelling, is another story.

The American industrial giant, Monsanto Company, well known for the herbicide glyphosate (sold as Roundup), produces the genetically modified soy beans that are planted by 90 per cent of American farmers, as well as genetically-modified corn that is in many store bought foods and is often fed to factory farm animals, even though the animal’s stomach is not designed to be 100 per cent cornfed.

Monsanto, which has been around for over

100 years, also brought the following into North America; DDT, saccharin, aspartame, Agent Orange, bovine growth hormone (given to cows to increase their milk production), and PCBs. Do you not find it scary that many of the above are now banned because of health risks and yet were, at some stage, deemed to be safe? Some folks question if food “made in the USA” will one day be deemed unsafe as well.

If you are concerned about what you and your family are eating, do get in the know about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) by reading labels, by doing research and by writing letters.

Everyone can demand better labelling of foods sold in Canada, for without such labelling there is no way to trace and determine if the escalating rate of allergies is linked to GMOs. Fortunately, organic foods are well labelled and there are many from which one can choose. Two highly recommended documentaries are: The World According to Monsanto (c. 2008) and Food Inc. (c. 2008).

Radio towers must be stopped I would like to voice my strong opposition to the proposed relocation of the KRPI Radio transmitter towers from Ferndale, Washington to a location along the border in Point Roberts.

KRPI is relocating in light of continuing interference problems and to relieve Ferndale residents of the problems that the current location has caused.

Regrettably, this move will simply relocate these same problems to the significantly larger community of Tsawwassen.

The background interference coming through your phones, TV’s, stereos, and internet is well documented in Ferndale and will be experienced here in Tsawwassen. There is the potential of devaluation of your homes and most importantly, there are grave health concerns surrounding radio towers. Who wants or deserves this?

KRPI (co-owned by a Canadian) appears to have found a loophole in the regulations by remaining in the USA, but relocating along the border to land owned by this same Canadian in Point Roberts. The station’s main audiences are in Surrey and Richmond. Locating five large AM radio transmitter

towers so close to a residential community is absurd, these towers should be in a rural area.

This is the absolutely wrong location for these towers.

These towers will affect all residents of Tsawwassen, not just the homes along the border. The majority of residents of Point Roberts are opposed to the towers being built in their community and they are mounting opposition. We need to quickly join in with our neighbours to the South and bring our large Tsawwassen numbers to bear.

The time to act is now. Please write to our Member of Parliament Kerry-Lynne Findlay, to James Moore, Minister of Industry Canada and to Mayor Lois Jackson. Join the rally on Dec. 1 at 11:30 a.m. at First Avenue and 56th Street. If our residents stand up and say no to these towers, there is a chance to stop them.

What I first wish to say is, yes, there is an overpopulation of these birds and there are concerns about destruction of marshlands because of this, which is why controlled hunting is permitted for this reason.

My concerns are that there were citizens and some of them were children close to the area where these hunters were hunting. A stray bullet could result in a lethal accident.

Furthermore, this hunting took place on the Pacific flyway where other birds, and some of those on the extinct species list could be harmed.

These birds fly in from Asia, the Arctic and Central America, not to mention North America. They need to rest and restore to continue there long journeys. Often when the birds arrive they are exhausted. They will not get there necessary rest or food if they feel it is an unsafe place to land.

For these reasons there should not be any hunting in the Pacific flyway.

hen Paul Ferry arrived in Point Roberts over a quarter of a century ago he was a 45-year-old retired metallurgical engineer who wasn’t looking to settle down any time soon.

He had been travelling around the world, enjoying his freedom and early retirement.

There was just one thing missing: music.

“I was looking for the smallest instrument that was portable. I had seen people lugging about guitars and I knew I didn’t want to do that,” he says, laughing.

Ferry decided to learn the flute and wound up in the second of four classes

for adult beginners that music director Curt Jantzen was holding in Delta. What nobody knew back then was that this was the genesis of the Delta Music Makers, a band of 50 members today, many of whom joined from those original classes.

Although he didn’t start playing the flute until his forties, one might declare Ferry was fated to become a musician. That, or genetically predisposed.

“I always enjoyed music and music was in my family,” he explains. “My mother was a pianist, my sister was a pianist, and my brother was a trumpet player. I was the

only one in my family who didn’t play an instrument.”

By playing music, Ferry, now 70 years old, has enriched his knowledge, and by extension his enjoyment. He can now visit the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and pick out the various instruments by ear.

Research shows that for seniors like Ferry, what they consider to be fun could also be extending their lives.

The musicians of the Delta Music Makers, the vast majority of whom are over the age of 50, may very well be decreasing the likelihood of dementia, says music

therapist Jo Anne Tait.

Music therapy is on the cutting edge of health care as it pertains to dementia, stroke, brain injuries, and the associated conditions of anxiety and depression. The reason for its effectiveness is that music taps into people’s memories where the two are often associated.

“I’m sure you’ve experienced the flood of images and emotions that come over you when you hear a song from your particular past that’s significant for you,” says Tait. “Well, that works in spite of cognitive decline.”

As the Canadian population continues to age, dementia will become a more prevalent problem, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

They estimate 500,000 Canadians currently have Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, and the problem is getting worse. As many as 50 per cent more Canadians and their families could be facing Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia in the next five years. Within a generation, the number of Canadians with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia will more than double, ranging between 1 and 1.3 million people, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Music therapy also works with stroke recovery because it doesn’t rely on spoken language for expression. Even as motor and verbal skills decline with age, these residents find their voice through playing bells, or more properly, tone chimes.

But learning music late in life isn’t the only way to delay the onset of dementia. In fact, staying mentally active by any means can greatly improve the quality of life for seniors, as well as extend it.

A 2003 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that seniors participating in mentally challenging leisure activities such as reading and playing board games helped them stay mentally sharp.

Researchers found that people aged 75 years or more who engaged in leisure activities had a lower risk of dementia than other elderly people.

ElderCollege Delta is one local organization offering seniors the chance to stay mentally active late in life, which can have a profoundly positive effect on one’s health and mental well-being, says ElderCollege Delta chair Paulette Tattersall.

❙ Angels for Christmas Southpointe Academy’s Citizenship Club make angels for the second straight year to support Deltassist’s Angel Tree program.

In mid-November the children deliver angels to participating businesses. Customers can take an angel, purchase a toy for the age they chose, and return it unwrapped with tags still attached. Then Deltassist, in partnership with the service clubs of Delta, schools, and local businesses, distributes Christmas food hampers and toys to low income families and seniors in our communities. When it comes to holiday cooking, it can be difficult to keep guests interested in the same Christmas standards. So this year, the South Delta Leader challenged four of Ladner and Tsawwassen’s finest chefs to come up with four creative takes on the same dish, using the same secret set of ingredients, for our annual Chef Showdown.

The event, hosted at Illuminaté Restorante in Tsawwassen, featured Beach Grove Golf Club executive chef Froilan Alejo, Coast Tsawwassen Inn executive chef Cindy Anderson, Urban Village Catering owner/operator Wes Levesque, and River House Restaurant and Pub executive chef Jamie Smail. The chefs were tasked with creating a signature dish based around a duck breast, supplied by Two Rivers Specialty Meats. Along with the featured protein, the chefs had a wide variety of fresh, locally-grown vegetables to incorporate into their dish, including Klondike rose potatoes, golden beets, rutabaga, and graffiti eggplant from BCfresh, as well as cherry tomatoes and peppers from BC Hot House.

Each chef was given an hour to prepare their dish for the esteemed panel of judges, which included BCfresh vice president of sales and marketing Brian Faulkner, Keg Steakhouse and Bar franchise owner Kurt Landert, South Delta Leader editor Robert Mangelsdorf, and Illuminaté Restorante owner and chef, Roland Smith.

Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together.

But that also means a greater risk for fire. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season.

HOLIDAY DECORATING KKK Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.

KKK Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.

KKK Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.

KKK Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect.

Before Heading Out or to Bed

Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed.

KKK Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.

KKK Keep decorations away from windows and doors.

HOLIDAY ENTERTAINING KKK Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan.

KKK Keep children and pets away from lit candles.

KKK Keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet.

KKK Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.

KKK Ask smokers to smoke outside. Remind smokers to keep their smoking materials with them so young children do not touch them.

KKK Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. Wet cigarette butts with water before discarding.

Chef showdown judges panel Brian Faulkner BCfresh Brian Faulkner knows a thing or two about fresh produce. As the vice president of marketing for BCfresh, B.C.’s largest potato grower, he’s intimately familiar with the dozens of varieties the consortium of 50 family growers produces. In addition to potatoes, BCBrian Faulkner fresh also produces dozens of other locally grown vegetables, including squash, beets, carrots, parsnips, Brussels sprouts, and rutabagas.

Faulkner got his start in the produce business with BC Hot House, and chose the secret ingredients for this year’s Chef Showdown, which were provided

by BCfresh, BC Hot House, and Two Rivers Specialty Meats.

Kurt Landert Keg Steakhouse and Bar Kurt Landert began his formal chef’s training at the age of 15 in his native Switzerland. After a

stint cooking in Sydney, Australia, he came to Canada in 1973 to become the executive chef at the Plaza International Hotel in North Kurt Landert Vancouver. In 1974 he joined the Keg group as the burgeoning chain’s executive chef and later vice president of food service, and was responsible for helping develop the menu, as well as training and instructional material for the chain’s kitchen staff.

Today, Landert is the owner of four Keg franchises in the Lower Mainland, with restaurants in Richmond, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford, and still loves a good steak.

Robert Mangelsdorf South Delta Leader Prior to his career in journalism, Robert Mangelsdorf spent close to a decade slaving away in the trenches of various kitchens throughout the Lower Mainland. Mangelsdorf’s first job was as a dishwasher at a Red Robin’s restaurant in Burnaby at 14 years

Mangelsdorf is an avid home cook and eats far too much.

Roland Smith Illuminaté Restorante Roland Smith was born and raised in Sweden, and got his start cooking in the kitchen of private men’s club in Stockholm. Smith travelled to the United States in his early 20s, where he studied at the French Culinary Institute in New York. After a stint at il Terazzo Carmine in Seattle, Smith came north to Vancouver to work at celebrity chef Umberto Menghi’s il Giardino. After rising to the posi-

tion of executive chef at il Giardino, Smith decided to bring the flavours of Tuscany to Tsawwassen, opening Illuminaté Restorante Roland Smith with his wife Joeqyna in 2005, creating one of South Delta’s premier fine dining restaurants.

Froilan Alejo, Beach Grove Golf Club ❙ Robert Mangelsdorf editor editor@southdeltaleader.com

Originally hailing from the Philippines, chef Froilan Alejo immigrated to Canada at the age of 17, and brought his love of bold flavours and spices with him.

Alejo first got his start in the kitchen washing dishes at the Red Robin’s restaurant at Metrotown in Burnaby, before going on to attend Vancouver Community College’s culinary arts program.

Alejo did his apprenticeship at the Beach House Restaurant and Lounge in West Vancouver and went on to become the chef of the fine dining restaurant Pinnacle Grill on the Holland America cruise lines.

“I worked on the cruise ships for four years,” he says. “I got to travel the world and see all different sorts of ingredients.”

Upon returning to Vancouver, Alejo further developed his talents at Richmond’s Quilchena Golf Club and Frankie’s Italian Kitchen in Vancouver.

For the past two years, Alejo has been the executive chef at the Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, where he runs the club’s restaurant and catering kitchen, cooking a diverse assortment of cuisines.

the same clientele,” says Alejo.

“That’s why it is important to offer a wide variety. Our menu is changing all the time.”

In addition to French- and Italian-inspired classics, Alejo is also comfortable serving up Asian and West Coast fusion cuisine.

“We cater to anybody, because we have multicultural members,” he says.

Alejo recently competed in the Top Chef B.C., finishing in second place, and is currently trying to qualify for the Bocuse d’Or, the famed international culinary

Olympics which next take place in 2016 in Lyon, France.

Alejo’s dish combined bold spices with sweet and savoury elements, creating a Tuscan-inspired dish that was right at home at Illuminaté Restorante.

“I looked at all the ingredients and tried to incorporate them as best as I could,” says Alejo.

“Rösti, I know, goes very well with duck breast. These aren’t ingredients you normally see with duck breast, so I tried to come up with a Mediterranean-style dish.”

Cindy Anderson grew up with very plain, bland foods in her Scottish mother’s kitchen, something she says pushed her to discover bold and exciting flavours from around the world.

“My mom was never a great cook - sorry mummy,” she says.

“I was the middle child… and it’s funny, because all three of [us] have this leaning towards ethnic food. I’ve always been into multicultural foods, and I’m a great lover of spice.”

Anderson’s culinary adventure began after graduating high school, when she decided to travel to Italy, a trip she financed by working at a Chinese restaurant.

In Italy she discovered the joys of fresh continental cuisine, and the wide world of pasta.

“That was the biggest inspiration for me,” she says. “I discovered there was more to life than spaghetti and meatballs.”

Anderson started out in the restaurant business running a concession stand, and soon opened the Main Espress Café in Vancouver, which she owned and operated for six years.

After a stint with Elizabeth’s Gourmet Delights in Ladner, Anderson took the sous chef position at Beach Grove Golf Club where

she cut her teeth under executive chef Garth Greenleaves.

“He really pushed me to get ticketed and do this as a career,” says Anderson. “I’m forever indebted to him.”

For the past three years, Anderson has been executive chef at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, where she regularly cooks for hundreds of party goers and guests.

“It’s basically a three-star hotel, so you get great band for your buck,” she says. “We have some great menus and great staff to facilitate any party or occasion.”

Anderson says she’s always

loved the fast-paced nature of professional cooking, as well as the creativity it allows her.

“I’ve always had a passion for food, it’s a fun artistic medium,” she says. “And I really like the intensity of it all [in the kitchen], because when its all over, and you’ve executed it with success, it feels great.”

Anderson’s dish was as colourful as it was flavourful, incorporating bold curry and ginger notes.

“There was a lot to work with, so I did my best to make it all work together,” she says.

Vegetable medley 1 cup diced turnip 1 diced white onion 1 cup diced golden beet ½ tsp garlic powder ½ tsp cumin ½ tsp coriander 3 gloves minced garlic ½ tsp turmeric 1 pint chicken stock 10 grape tomatoes – halved Vegetable oil Sauté white onion with a dash of salt. Sauté remaining vegetables. Add spices and chicken stock. Simmer until tender and reduce to almost dry Garlic mashed potatoes Boil 5 potatoes until tender 10 garlic cloves roasted in oven at 350 degrees for 15 minutes 3 tablespoon butter 1/3 whipped cream Salt and pepper Mash all ingredients until blended and fluffy Ginger Duck 4 duck breast rubbed with ginger, salt & pepper

Sear on high heat in pan with oil (skin side down), cook the breast fillets until the skin is crisp (10-15 minutes), turn duck breast over and place in 450F oven, bake for 10-15 minutes (when breast is cooked, juices will run clear). Remove from the pan and let the duck breast rest for 5 minutes.

Ginger Sauce Sauté 1 diced white onion Add 10 grape tomatoes Add one inch of fresh grated ginger, 2 gloves minced garlic, and ½ teaspoon turmeric – sauté. Add 2 cups whip cream, bring to a boil. Place in blender.

Puree and return to pan, cook until sauce thickens (about 10 minutes).

Urban Village Catering owner and operator Wes Levesque knew since he was five-yearsold he wanted to be a chef.

Largely self taught, he opened his first restaurant, the Hilltop Café on English Bluff Road, at the age of 20.

“I grew up reading cook books and learning hands on,” he says. “I’ve wanted to be a chef as long as I can remember.”

Two years ago, Levesque sold his former eatery, to get into the catering business and take over operations of KinVillage Café at Tsawwassen’s KinVillage Community Centre.

In addition to running his catering company, Levesque is the host of Superfood Chef on DeltaTV, and currently working on building his own line of Superfood retail products.

Levesque is a strong believer that to make the best food , it needs to be local and organic, and he sources most of his ingredients from a dozen or so local companies.

“That’s one of the pushes we’ve made lately, to source locally,” he says. “And if we can’t get it local, at least get it organic.”

Levesque says more young people are discovering that organic food not only tastes better, it is better for you.

“My generation is making a huge push and it’s a push in a positive direction.”

Buying local is about more than supporting farms in your community. Levesque says the further a fruit or vegetable has to travel the more nutrients are lost.

That’s why you usually won’t find exotic fruits in Levesque’s dishes. Sometimes that means working with ingenuity.

Levesque’s Morroccan-flavoured dish is gluten-free and dairy-free, but it certainly isn’t lacking in flavour.

A former student of nutrition in college, he talked to nutritionists who told him avoiding dairy and gluten is easier on the digestive system.

As someone who has suffered from digestion problems in the past, Levesque says making the dietary switch has greatly improved his health.

“It’s just a healthier way of cooking,” he says.

Root vegetable risotto 1 rutabaga 2 large golden beets 5 medium red potatoes 1 shallot 1 clove garlic 1 tbsp organic coconut oil 1 cup chicken stock 1/2 cup coconut milk 1 tsp saffron 1 tsp sea salt 1 tsp ground pepper Chimichurri 1 red pepper 5 grape tomatoes 10 mint leaves 1/2 clove garlic 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 1/4 cup pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp minced parsley

1 tsp salt and pepper 1 small chili pepper de-seeded Directions Set oven to 400F. Cut pepper in half and de-seed. Brush oilve oil on pepper and grape tomatoes and put them on a baking sheet to roast in the oven for 15 minutes. Score fat on duck breasts and rub harissa spice evenly all over breasts. Let sit. Peel and mince rutabaga, beets, potato, onion and garlic. Sautee in 1 tbsp coconut oil. Sautee until transparent and slowly add chicken stock as if you’re making risotto. Finish with coconut milk, salt, pepper, and saffron. Preheat steel pan on medium heat. Add duck breasts fat side down. Fat should render and shrink and crisp up (6 minutes). Turn duck over and finish in the oven at 350F for about 6 minutes. Add all chimichurri ingredients and puree in food processor or blender.

At 25-years-old, Jamie Smail is the youngest of the four competitors in this year’s Chef Showdown.

But while he may not yet have the experience of some of the older chefs in the competition, Smail is certainly a chef who’s star is on the rise. Despite his youth, Smail was named the executive chef at the River House Restaurant and Pub in Ladner last year, and has quickly made a name for himself with his locally-inspired dishes.

Smail’s first taste of kitchen life was as a dishwasher at a pub while he was still in high school, and soon moved up to the kitchen where was flipping burgers and working the fryers. Smail was first able to truly develop his cooking skills when he joined the team at Felicos Greek restaurant in Richmond.

“I got a little bit more experience and kind of learned some techniques there, the Greek cooking,” he says.

But Smail knew he still many flavours he had yet to taste, so he set off to eat his way around Europe, sampling the many varied cuisines the continent has to offer. On his return to Canada, Smail landed at the River House, initially as a line cook, and soon worked his way up the ranks. But

after three years, Smail left the restaurant to spend a year at the prestigious Vancouver steakhouse Black+Blue, an experience which further helped him develop as a chef.

“I learned a lot there, especially about time management, working high volume,” he says.

He returned to River House last year as the restaurant’s new executive chef, and has been working to put more local food on the menu.

“We try to use fresh, local ingredients, so the menu is constantly changing and there’s new stuff every week,” he says. “That keeps life interesting.”

Smail’s dish took its cues from the assortment of root vegetables provided, as he created a rustic dish, perfect for a cold winter’s evening.

“I wanted to keep it simple and not overdo it,” he says. “It’s comfort food.”

Chef Showdown 2013 winner

Froilan Alejo

Executive chef Froilan Alejo of Beach Grove Golf Club was named the Chef Showdown 2013 champion for his winning dish of five-spice duck breast, with vegetables napoleon, potato rösti, and roasted tomato chili coulis.

The judges found Alejo’s dish offered a wonderful balance of flavours and textures, in addition to being plated beautifully.

The sweetness and spice of the coulis brought out the best in the vegetable napoleon, while its acidity married well with his perfectly-cooked duck breast. Meanwhile the crispy rösti provided a welcome change in texture.

“All of the competitors’ dishes were impressive in their own way, but Froilan’s stood out as the best,” said judge Robert Mangelsdorf.

Randy Scott is lighting up the town again this year, spending his Sundays putting up hundreds of strings of lights on the trees surrounding downtown businesses.

“It’s always been a big part of the community and we started the lighting program, myself and Diana Cousins who now works for the municipality, about 15 years ago,” said Scott, president of the Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen.

“I like lights, man, you should see my backyard! It’s unbelievable.”

Scott said he likes to keep it up each year because it’s a distinct activity that Tsawwassen takes part in that the village of Ladner does not.

“No knock to Ladner but people will come by and go, how come Tsawwassen has got them and we don’t have them? Well, that’s because I do it.”

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen is dazzling Diefenbaker Park in cheery LEDs for their annual Lighting Up The Park event on Dec. 14 at 4:30 p.m.

Rotary president Leslie Abramson said the Delta Fire Department has volunteered to

decorate the giant Christmas tree in the park by using their rescue ladder.

“Isn’t that cool that they’re going to put the lights up for us?

That’s what they do in a small town.”

Abramson said there will be caroling and hot drinks prior to the unveiling of a new bench dedication to the memory of Eleanor McWhannel, the first female principal of the Delta School District.

Century Group also decorated all of its buildings, including the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, to get people into a festive mood.

As for the mall, it has plenty of Christmas events coming up to get everybody and anybody in the holiday spirit.

Shannon Taylor, promotions manager of the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, said folks shouldn’t miss an annual favourite event for the community, Wake Up Santa.

This Saturday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m. sharp, parents and children alike will have to summon all of their Christmas cheer and spirit to rouse Santa Claus from his deep slumber.

“The Wake Up Santa is an event that has occurred for probably about 25 years,” says Taylor. “What’s really special

If you miss Santa this Saturday, fear not. He’ll be available for photos every weekend from 1-5 p.m.

This year, the Wake Up Santa event will coincide with a Christmas Craft Market, featuring over 30 unique vendors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Regular merchants will also be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Christmas shoppers.

Holiday spirit alive in Ladner Village ❙ Staff writer news@southdeltaleader.com

Our most memorable holidays often involve long-sanding family traditions.

In Ladner, one such tradition is the annual sailing of the carol ships.

The annual procession has been a Ladner tradition for more than 40 years, with fishing boats, sail boats, and yachts donned in christmas lights making their way from Westham Island to Ladner Harbour.

The annual display is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6 and Saturday, Dec. 7, and this year features a sing-a-long led by the Ladner Gospel Assembly.

The caroling begins at 7 p.m. at 48th Ave. and Delta Street, and will make its way to Ladner harbour to greet the carol ships.

The carol ships arrive in Ladner Harbour at Elliott and Chisholm Streets at 7:45 p.m. on Dec. 6 and at 7:15 p.m. on Dec. 7.

There’s plenty of other Christmas activities for the whole family in Ladner this holiday season.

With the holiday season upon us, so too is the time for celebrations. But whether it’s a work Christmas party or a family gathering, it’s always important to have a safe ride home planned.

Thankfully, the volunteers at Operation Red Nose will be out in force this holiday season to ensure Delta’s roads are safe and free of drunk drivers.

Volunteers from Operation Red Nose will pick you up and drive you home in your own car. The service is provided by donation, and since 2002, the Delta Gymnastics Society has been the local host.

Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford says the program helps keep Delta’s streets safe.

“It’s a public safety issue for sure,” says Cessford. “People go out celebrating and forget to home somehow, and they’ll make the mistake of driving.”

With the province-wide Counterattack program in full swing, those who do opt to drive run the risk of losing their licence, their car, facing fines or even jail time.

But the alternative is much worse.

“We have seen some terrible things on our highways from

drunk drivers,” he says. “We’re the ones that have to deal with the carnage and the devastation.”

Like many police officers, Cessford has had the sad duty of having to inform family members their loved one has died in an accident.

“That’s tragic,” he says. “For the family, they’re devastated.

And for the police, fire, and ambulance, that stays with you.”

Cessford said it’s important to plan ahead and organize a ride home before you start drinking.

“My family drives on our roads and highways too, and I don’t want them getting hit by a drunk driver,” he said.

For the past 12 years Carlene Lewall of Delta Gymnastics and her husband have volunteered with Operation Red Nose, not only in the organizing of the program but in driving and dispatch.

“We have met wonderful people, had lots of fun and happy to help the community,” she says.

While a volunteer driving shift runs from 9 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m., Lewall says its worth it because it makes a difference.

“Yes, you might be a bit tired the following morning, but that night possibly will mean a world of difference to anyone who shared the road that evening,” she says.

“It’s not only those whom we

safely drive to their destination that we directly affect, but it is all those clueless drivers on the road that could by chance be in front, behind or across from an unsafe driver or maybe even an innocent bystander or a person crossing the road,” says Lewall.

“The ripple of all those who ben-

efit from the program is too large to measure and capture in a simple statistic.”

The B.C. government, police and ICBC launched their annual December CounterAttack campaign this to ask drivers to plan ahead for a safe ride home if their holiday festivities will involve alcohol.

During December, an average of five people are killed in B.C. each year in crashes involving impaired driving.

While attitudes towards drinking and driving have changed considerably over the years, an average of 95 lives are still lost each year and impaired driving remains a leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. “We’ve come a long way since 1976, the year before CounterAttack roadchecks started, when

more than 300 people were killed in impaired related crashes each year in our province,” said Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

“Despite the progress, the numbers are far too high, which is why we’re committed to reducing crashes involving alcohol and drugs and will continue to support enhanced enforcement, including the December CounterAttack campaign.”

If your holiday festivities involve alcohol, make a plan before you head out. Arrange for a designated driver or use other options to get home safely – call a taxi or Operation Red Nose, take transit or call a sober friend.

“The reality is that approximately one third of all car crash fatalities in B.C. are related to impaired driving,” said Todd

Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “These are preventable tragedies. Safety is our top priority and we want everyone to do their part this Christmas season and look out for their friends and family – take a stand and don’t let them get behind the wheel impaired.”

Police across the province will be out in full force at CounterAttack roadchecks this holiday season looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford said local officers will be out in force to take drunk drivers off on Delta roads.

“If we catch you driving drunk, we’re going to take your licence and your vehicle, and there could be criminal charges as well,” he said. “That means severe fines and even jail time.”

More than $8,000 raised for men’s health at Delta Hospital The South Delta Leader’s first annual fundraiser for men’s health was held at Illuminaté Restorante in Tsawwassen on Tuesday, with close to 100 guests helping to raise close to $8,000 for the Delta Hospital. The Movember-inspired event was emceed by former BCTV sports anchor

John McKeachie and featured former NHLer Dennis Hull, who had the crowd in stitches with his self-deprecating humour.

The Delta Ice Hawks may not have had a lot of scoring of late, but that hasn’t stopped them from stringing together a four-game win streak.

The local junior B hockey club edged crosstown rivals North Delta Devils Tuesday night at home by a score of 3-2, strengthening their hold on first place in the Pacific Junior Hockey League.

While the win was the fourth in a row for the Ice Hawks, the team has scored just 10 goals in that span. In the seven games since the team’s 6-0 victory against the Port Moody Panthers on Nov. 9, the Ice Hawks have averaged just 2.14 goals per game, well below their season average of 3.71.

But while the team’s scoring has trailed off of late, Delta has only allowed six goals in the past four games. Ice Hawk goalies Scott Lapp and Alexander Ahnert lead the league in save percentage, with numbers of .932 and ,932,

respectively.

However, it was North Delta who opened the scoring Tuesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre, with a power play goal in the first period. The Ice Hawks answered back in the second with a pair of goals from Benjamin Blake. The Devils scored their second power play goal of the night to send the game into the third period tied 2-2. Spencer Schoen scored in the final frame to put the Ice Hawks ahead 3-2. While the Devils opted to pull goalie Dawson Aulenback for the last minute of play, the home team was able to hang on for the win.

Samuel Chatterley had two assists for Delta, while Kartsen Seidel and Robert Johnson each had helpers of their own. Lapp made 19 saves in the win.

Blake was named the game’s first star, and Schoen picked up second star honours.

The Delta Ice Hawks next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 3, when they host the Grandview Steelers.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The South Delta Rams junior bantam football team punched their ticket to the provincial championship game, defeating the Victoria Renegades 49-14 in the B.C. semifinals on Sunday at home at Dennison Park. With the win, the Rams will now face the Abbotsford Falcons in the B.C. junior bantam championship this weekend.

Rams president Tim Brumby said Sunday’s

game was much closer than the score suggests, especially in the early going.

“It was a very defensive game early on,” he said. “We spent a lot of the quarter between our 20- and 40yard line.”

The Rams were finally able to punch through the Renegades defence and force a safety to take a 2-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Rams ran the ball back for their first touchdown.

“It really opened up after that,” Brumby

said. “Our offensive really took over and our defence played well all game.”

With the win, the Rams maintain their undefeated record this season, and will face the only other team in the province without a loss this year in the provincial championships: The Abbotsford Falcons.

The South Delta Sun Devils’ bid to repeat as AA B.C. champions ended Saturday as the injury-plagued team fell 28-21 to the Carson Graham Eagles of North Vancouver in the provincial semifinals at UBC. The senior Sun Devils football team fell behind early in the game as the Eagles opted to play a wildcat offence, snapping directly to one of two running backs in motion.

“We were expecting their usual offence, so we had to work to adjust to that,” said Sun Devils head coach Ray Moon.

To make matters worse for the Sun Devils, injuries to the team’s starters began to take their toll by the second quarter. The team started the game without linebackers Austin Pearson, Thomas Franklin, and Mitch Dino.

But it wasn’t long before injuries also sidelined lineman Christipher McLauchlan, linebacker William Kraynyk, running back Jack McDonald and receiver Jeremy Carmichael.

“By the second quarter, we were down seven or eight of our starters,” said Moon. “So that became a bit of a challenge. We had a lot of new faces on our defensive line as a result.”

The Sun Devils finished the first half down 14-7, but adjustments to team’s defence allowed them to keep pace with the Eagles through the second half.

McDonald got back into the game in the fourth quarter, playing through a torn hamstring, according to Moon.

That helped spur on the Sun Devils for a final push to tie the game. South Delta marched down the field late in the fourth quarter and were in a position to even the score, however, a fumble on the fiveyard line turned over the ball to the Eagles, who ran out the clock for the 28-21 victory.

While the semifinal loss wasn’t the finish Moon was

hoping for this season, he said he was satisfied with how his team played.

The Sun Devils will see many of their starters returning for next season, including quarterback Lucas Kirk and McDonald. With the Sun Devils moving up to the AAA-level next season, Moon said that experience will help the team remain competitive.

“Every game will be a tough game,” he said. “Our concern is getting the kids trained and backfilling positions. The calibre of football is a lot better, so if we lose one or two of our starters, we’re going to end up a bit thin.”

While the Sun Devils will be going up against teams like the Mt. Douglas Rams and the New Westminster Hyacks - both of whom dealt the Sun Devils their only losses of this season - Moon said he’s optimistic about next season at AAA. “I think we’ll be very competitive and we have a good shot to make the playoffs,” he said.

“And once you make the playoffs, anything can happen.”

rtistic Director Jovanni Sy returns to his roots this December—acting in Gateway’s upcoming Holiday Musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I.

Though Gateway audiences are familiar with Jovanni’s role as Artistic Director, many may not know that he also has a vibrant acting career. Jovanni has performed on stages across Canada, with a body of work that includes acting in The King and I four times—twice as Lun Tha and twice playing the King.

Having spent so much time performing in The King and I, Jovanni knows, first-hand, what makes the show so special. “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s themes are universal and timely,” says Jovanni, adding “there will always be an outsider and culture clashes [in life] that require mutual understanding.”
