CUSTOMER CARE REGISTRATION POLICIES

Uh-oh, we had to cancel:

Regrettably, if a minimum number of registrants are not met, we may have to cancel or combine classes. These decisions are made prior to the course start date. Please register early to avoid disappointment. A 100% refund is granted when we cancel a program. When a class has been cancelled due to instructor illness or weather conditions, a class will be added on at the end of the session. If this is not possible, a refund will be issued for the missed class.

If a program is full please ask staff to put your name on our wait list, staff review these lists continually and we will do our best to accommodate.

Extended Illness / Injury:

In cases of extended illness or injury, a prorated refund may be granted with a medical note.

Missed Classes:

Classes missed due to sickness, vacation or other reasons will not be refunded or credited.

Oops, changed your plans? For Island Savings Centre programs a credit in the form of a gift card or a refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal notification 1 week prior to the course start date. If less than 1 week’s notice is given, no refund or credit will be issued. In the case of week-long camps we require notification 2 weeks in advance of program start date. There may be other exceptions to these guidelines. In some cases, these exceptions will be noted in the individual course description. For North Cowichan Parks & Rec programs, please withdraw a minimum of three days prior to start date for a full credit or refund. Withdrawals can be made after this point in time, but a $10 withdrawal fee will be charged.

Refund Fee:

Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for refunds to be processed. For Island Savings Centre programs refund requests are subject to a $5 administration fee, unless otherwise noted in course description. For North Cowichan Parks & Rec programs a further $10 refund fee is applicable. No refunds are permitted after the second class (note some classes have a no refund policy - check your receipt!).

Cowichan Aquatic Centre Leisure Access Program

Island Savings Centre Recreation Access Program

JumpStart Program

Provides support, through program credits and no charge access to the aquatic centre, to individuals and families living below the Statistics Canada low income threshold. The program is available to residents of North Cowichan, the City of Duncan, Cowichan Tribes and CVRD Area’s A, B, C, D & E. To inquire or apply for this program please visit the front desk of the Cowichan Aquatic Centre. Apply in person at the front counter. 2653 James Street Duncan, B.C. Applications avalaible on line.

Helping eligible children, youth and families access programs and activities at the Island Savings Centre. Families who live within the Cowichan Valley Regional District, Island Savings Centre tax base are eligible to apply once a year. Requests are granted on a first come, first served basis with priority given to children, youth, and the most in need. Pick up an application form at the Island Savings Centre. Strong communities include strong kids. Canadian Tire believes all kids should have the chance to run, skate and play. Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a community based charitable program that helps kids in financial need participate in organized sport and recreation such as hockey, dance, soccer and swimming, so they develop important life skills, self esteem and confidence. YOUTH Beginner Swim Lessons (13+yrs)

Experience the world of water and how to keep your little one safe in it. A combination of structured play with songs, holds, & water exploration with important water safety info and tips for mom and dad. This is sure to provide you with peace of mind with your baby around the water. Engagement and interaction makes each visit a success.

Snorkeling 101 (5 to 10yrs) Cowichan Aquatic Centre

Explore the world of the sea from the safety of the pool while learning all about snorkeling. Learn how to fit and care for your equipment while discovering breathing with your snorkel and clearing your mask through games and activities. Bring your own equipment (non-glass masks, snorkel) or use ours (limited supply).

Is that kick holding you back? You just can’t get the hang of whip kick, flutter kick, sidestroke, or the dolphin kick. This four week course is ideal for comprehending difficult skills like breast stroke to continue on with red cross swim lessons. There will be no water safety taught. Are you struggling with front crawl and need extra swim practice. This four week course is ideal for comprehending difficult skills or just perfecting your skills to continue on with red cross swim lessons.

The perfect place to learn your basic skills & knowledge for participating in surfing is indoors at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre. From basic paddling techniques on boards, to turning your board & body position.

Stand Up Paddle Board Cowichan Aquatic Centre

Stand up paddling isn’t a skill, it’s an amazing experience. Whether you’re 7 or 79 years old, you’ll learn to stand up paddle and you’ll be up and paddling on your very first lesson regardless of your experience or ability.

TRAINING COURSES Education Assistant Assessment

Submersion, breath control, front and back floats & glides and other basic progressions are focused on. Learn to swim at your rate to develop buoyancy, floating and gliding skills. Most of all you will be able to enjoy the many benefits of the water.

This is to confirm that the individual that will be working with School District children know how to properly support themselves in the water and know basic rescue skills.

Lifeguards in Training Cowichan Aquatic Centre

Are you interested in becoming a lifeguard but don’t have the time to wait for all the courses. The Cowichan Aquatic Centre is offering a new way to start your journey to becoming a lifeguard. This challenging course includes instruction in lifesaving skills, water rescues and first aid. You will leave this course with a Bronze Medallion and Cross certification as well as a CPR C 100% attendance mandatory.

This is the first of two steps that are required to become a Red Cross swimming instructor. You will learn the foundations of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principals, progressions, communication, safety supervision & feedback.

Cowichan Aquatic Centre Are you a triathlete, open water or master swimmer looking to improve your technique &/or swim efficiently? Our coached Adult Swim program on Saturday morning is for you. Doug designs a program to enhance adults swim stroke or assist athletes, to learn techniques and drills to take their swimming proficiency to the next level. He puts a strong emphasis on technique and putting in quality training as opposed to sheer distance. Doug looks forward to helping you all to achieve your goals. Interested in starting the road to becoming a lifeguard but are concerned about the physical standards? Work with us to increase endurance in key strokes and learn basic knowledge about workouts, lifesaving fitness, and self rescue. Timed swims and other physical standards will be covered too.

On your mark, get set, get wet with Friday Night Water Fight!!!! Bring all you water guns and water spraying toys for a ultimate water fight. There will be water and super soakers all over the place. We will be just what those rainy day blues ordered! We transform the facility into a dive-in movie theatre with floatable seating!

The Cowichan Aquatic Centre pool side will be closed so that we can host the Vancouver Island Regional Swim Meet on Friday, January 17th through to Sunday, January 19th, 2014 Our fitness area will be open throughout the weekend though. GLOW IN THE DARK

Break out all your GLOW sticks and necklaces and join us at the pool for a glowing swimming. The lights will be off but the pool will be a glow. Come play glowing ring toss, glow in the dark volleyball, and take a trip down one of the dark as night slides.

The tour will include the museum and their workshop where members of the Wooden Boat Society can take courses on boat construction and repair their own boats.

A four session discussion group will appreciate and celebrate the short stories of Alice Munro. Part of the first session will look at the history and structure of the short story form.

An illustrated discussion of how boats go up and downhill in canals with special reference to the Panama Canal and the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland and Peterborough Boat lift in Ontario.

If you’re a collector of quotes or simply love handmade books, then this class is for you. The project is a small book (about 3.5” x 3.5”) with covers woven from strips of paper in a bold check design. Between the covers 30+ pages will be stitched together leaving you with lots of room to record those treasured words. Use the attached bookmark to keep track of a favourite quote. All papers are supplied, kit fee $10/person.

A Visit to the Paldi Sikh Temple

Beach Walk to Thetis Island

Guided tour and introduction to history of the Paldi community and Sikh culture at the Paldi Sikh Temple as conducted by local historian and author, Joan Mayo.

A walk on the beach at low tide to see the various organisms on a muddy shore and a rocky shore. A road walk of about a mile takes us from the beach near the ferry landing to a rocky shore.
