“Shopping off-the-beaten path in one of your neighbourhood stores can be a much calmer experience during the holiday shopping season,” said François Ramsay, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs for Yellow Pages Group, a digital media and marketing solutions company.

“Additionally, every purchase you make at a local business has a direct impact on the surrounding neighbour-

hood and the local economy, strengthening it and helping create sustainability and growth in our communities.”

Among the positive impacts of local shopping are: • JOB CREATION: Small businesses are the largest group of employers in the country • LOCAL IMPACT: Dollars spent within the neighbourhood directly benefit the local economy and tend to be re-invested within the community.

• NEIGHBOURHOOD PROSPERITY: The presence and success of small businesses play key roles in giving communities their identities and also influence neighbourhood desirability and growth • CUSTOMER SERVICE: Independent retailers often personalized service, making shopping a less stressful and more meaningful experience.

General manager Ran Ravitz explains: “Canadian retailers will be offering very competitive prices. Even if the event didn’t originate here, retailers want to keep customers on this side of the border.” Ravitz adds that while it was a big event in 2012, he expects even more deals in 2013.

On the subject of where to find the best deals, Ravitz believes that online retail has a lot to offer. “Online shopping gives everyone a chance to get good deals,” he explains.

“You can get to sales the minute they start, compare prices quickly, and even find extra discounts.”

Give the gift of local commerce to your neighbourhood this holiday season (NC) Recent reports found that cross-border shopping dollars are estimated between 5 to 10 percent of total Canadian consumer spending for a minimum of 20 billion dollars each year.

Traffic across the border to the United States from Canada is consistently high during the last weekend in November, when Canadian shoppers will be looking for the best bargains and prices in order to fit gift purchases into their budgets take part in Black Friday. This holiday shopping tradition sees American retailers offering steep discounts and

promotions to kick off the holiday shopping season.

In the same shopping period, other shoppers will take advantage of Cyber Monday deals and savings, diverting their spend online.

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday make up the largest shopping holidays of the year and may offer price benefits to Canadian consumers, there are a number of positive impacts to the local Canadian business landscape which are offered by local shopping.

Still, other factors, including gas prices and U.S. retailers like Target entering Canada, have left many of us questioning whether trips south of the border are worth it.

players are starting to get the message. Apple has priced its major product lines the same in both the U.S. and Canada. Google has also equalized prices for its latest Nexus 7 Tablet.”

Ravitz thinks that if you’re already an avid cross-border shopper, then you may still be inclined to go. However, Canadian retailers are starting to catch up, he said, and with all the tools of online bargain hunting at your disposal you certainly don’t have to go south of the border for good deals.

You’ll need your stretchy pants this Friday — but not the let-it-all-hang-out Thanksgiving ones. No, it’s time to take out the stretchy athletic variety. Black Friday is here, and as always it will be a sprint through the crowds, down the aisles, and over to the cashier with the deals you’ve been waiting for all year.

Although the images we see of Black Friday usually feature the screaming, pushing hordes at electronics stores, the hottest items are clothing and clothing accessories, as well as CDs, books, DVDs, and video games. In

If you don’t feel like waking up before dawn to line up for a first crack at the deals, don’t worry: online Black Friday is gaining momentum and extraordinary bargains can be had for those who want to shop from the comfort of home. Shoppers are relying increasingly on websites for discounted merchandise. In fact, online shopping comes in third, right behind discount stores and department stores.

There are two popular theories as to why the day after American Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. One theory says it’s due to the heavy traffic on the roads.

Tires used to leave a lot of black rubber on the road surface, leading to the term Black Friday. The other theory comes from the old fashioned method of marking accounting ledgers: Profits were shown in red, losses in black. Because there is so much retail business on this day of the year, it’s believed that store owners coined the term in reference to their ledger sheets.
