Future looking bright for food bank With a new home and renovations well underway, staff looking forward to the new year

I

t’s been a busy couple of months over at the Sources White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank, and with the holiday season fast approaching, it’s likely to stay that way for weeks to come. Since moving into their new home at 2343 156 St. earlier this year, it has been a flurry of rearranging, renovating and coming up with inventive ways to continue helping their clients, according to manager Jaye Murray. “We’ve had to be a little creative,” she laughed. Having recently completed a major renovation – which included building a second floor and installing a cooler – the food bank team is now looking forward to having an elevator installed, and are hoping that will be completed in February. Despite dealing with the hiccups that come along with moving and renovating, Murray said they’ve been able to maintain operations and help get their clients the help they need, and response to the new site has been great. In addition to having more room to work with, the environment is brighter and more welcoming, cleaner and safer, and provides a much-needed office for things like registering clients and offering additional resources and support. “We really needed an office for people to be able to sit down and register with privacy and dignity, so that’s been huge,” Murray said. It’s more important than ever that residents in need have access to a safe and secure food-sharing system, as it’s estimated that

Sources White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank manager Jaye Murray is thrilled with the organization's new home, which it moved into in July of this year. Below, volunteers build garden plots on an adjacent piece of property in September.

upwards of 94,000 people across our province are aided by food banks. One-third of those helped are children. Since 2008, the number of British Columbians seeking support from a local food bank has risen by 20.4 per cent. The Sources Food Bank aims to provide enough food for each client for at least two days per week, as well as offering supplementary food for two

school lunches for children, and diapers, formula food and supplies for babies. In September, the food bank also embarked on a new addition – a community garden consisting of 16 plots built on idle land behind a neighbouring building. Murray said at the time the plan was for half the plots to be designated for growing food bank produce, while the other half would be available to community residents. While the food bank has worked hard to maintain operations over the past several months of transition and adjustment, Murray does expect some struggle when the holiday rush kicks in. “Because we’ve had limited space, we’ve had to put off some of the reclaim that we’re entitled to. It’s about a pallet every week that we’ve missed out on,” Murray explained. “So now we do have to do some catch-up.” For anyone who is willing and able to help, there are plenty of ways to lend a hand to the Sources White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank. First and foremost, Murray said, monetary donations make

the biggest impact for the organization. “It sounds kind of bad, but donating money is always better,” she said. “The reality is, we get such good deals from the local grocery stores, and we can buy things in bulk and buy it as we need it.” That’s not to say, of course, that food donations aren’t also a huge help. Recommended healthy items that are always in need include canned protein (tuna, salmon, chicken, etc.), peanut butter, milk powder, brown rice, whole grain pasta, oatmeal, legumes, canned vegetables and fruit, fruit juice (no sugar added) and oil. Donations can be made on-site between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Donation bins can also be found around the community at Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart, Safeway (Peninsula Village & Ocean Park), Thrifty Foods, Choices and Buy-Low Foods. For more about the food bank and how you can help, visit www. sourcesbc.ca, call 604-531-8168 or email foodbank@sourcesbc.ca

Trim that tree with the nontraditional Unique colour schemes, eclectic ornaments all the rage for this year's holiday decor

I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at many of our local stores and shopping centres. That means it’s time to get your home ready for the fastapproaching holiday season. The days of traditional green and red decor, gaudy tinsel and sadlooking wreaths are long gone, as local decor retailers are well stocked with unique, charming and elegant items to add the perfect amount of festive spirit to your home, no matter what your style. Over at Art Knapp Plantland on King George Boulevard, design expert Shawn Esson said she’s noticing a trend this year of customers working with their home’s existing decor and colour scheme when picking out holiday If you’re looking to try something items with which to decorate. new with your tree this year, “A lot of people have nice but don’t want to scrap all the earthy tones in their homes, and sometimes that can clash with the decor you already have, Esson recommends changing up the traditional Christmas colours,” colours of the balls you use – for Esson said. “So we’re seeing example, opting to use black balls people go with coppers, pewters – which can dramatically alter the and chocolates instead.” overall look of the Homeowners are tree. also taking some of ❝A lot of people have A must-have item the main colours nice earthy tones when it comes to from their tree decor in their homes, and prepping your decor and working them sometimes that can this year is the throughout the entire house, Esson said. clash with traditional brand-new Bungee Bobble. taken home to brighten up your home. In addition to the festive holiday plant, Sandy Styles said there is plenty to be excited about at the 172 Street store. “Gold is the new silver,” she said. “Although, silver and white are still very popular.” If you’re looking to step outside the traditional Christmas decor box a little bit this year, West Coast Gardens has a huge range of unique tree ornaments – with funky patterns including leopard print. Bird-themed decorations – including adorable little furry owls – are always popular this time of year, and Styles noted

they also have a wide selection of silver and white ceramic ornaments. “You can always decorate your house with all our fresh greens, too, which is a very popular look these days,” she noted. If you’re in the mood to really go nontraditional and crazy with your decor this year, Esson suggests one of Art Knapp’s many colored tinsel trees, available in a variety of unique, un-Christmaslike colours including lime green, purple and chartreuse. “They’re fun, retro, tinsel trees that just really pop and add a burst of colour.”

Dazzle your signiÀcant other this year Gift ideas to help Ànd that special something for your special someone

T

he Christmas season is a time when many husbands and wives are put to the test – finding the perfect gift to express your love for your significant other, while maintaining practicality and staying on budget. While some couples take the easy route – providing explicit instructions to one another, or foregoing a gift exchange altogether – for those who wish to maintain the thrill of a surprise come Christmas morning, finding just the right present can be tricky, to say the least. Like any gift recipient, the most important thing is to really think about who you're buying for. Are they into the finer things in life? Or do they prefer rugged, fun, even quirky gifts? Could they use a day of spoiling and pampering? Or would they prefer something that is practical and gets plenty of use throughout the entire year? Once you've established the type of gift you're after for the one you love, it's not a bad idea to set some boundaries regarding price, to avoid over or under-spending. Finally, do a little shopping around well ahead of time and try not to leave it till the last minute – both men and women are sometimes guilty of procrastinating – this can lead to shopping in a panic, and you will likely not find the perfect thing for him or her when desperately scouring the stores in that state of mind. Here are a few suggestions from local retailers to get you started on finding the ultimate present for your significant other.

For Her Jewelry is always a great option this time of year, as there is plenty of opportunity for a woman to

hand-made in Denmark out of natural wool, and are second-tonone at keeping tootsies warm over the winter months. They come in three different styles – slipper, shoe and boot – and are available in a few different colours, as well.

wear her new piece at holiday parties, and it will always remind her of how special this particular Christmas season was when she takes it out of her jewelry box. Amanda Murdoch of Murdoch Jewellers suggests that earrings are a good choice when trying to decide what kind of jewelry to buy. "You can never have enough earrings," Murdoch pointed out. "There are seven days in a week, and you don't want to wear the same earrings every day." Diamond earrings are always a popular choice, she noted, as well as pearl studs. "Every woman should have a pair of pearl studs," she said. The store, located at the Shops at High Street, also has a wide selection of Italian 14 and 18-karat gold earrings, as well as unique, handcrafted customdesigned earrings in a variety of colours and designs. If the lady on your list is more into all things comfortable – and this time of year, who isn't? – then you'll want to stop in at PJ'ZZZZ Bed Bath Sleep at Morgan Crossing. With a cozy and colourful selection of Bed Head-brand

flannel and knit pyjamas – including a great selection of plus-sized options – you're sure to find the perfect gift of comfort for under the tree. PJ'ZZZZ also carries beautiful 100 per cent cashmere robes, and silk-lined velvet robes, perfect for days spent lounging around the house over the Christmas holidays. A perfect complement to some gorgeous new sleepwear is a pair of Glerups slippers from Zig Zag Fashion Boutique. These slippers are 100 per cent

It's not only women who enjoy being spoiled with a beautiful piece of jewelry this time of year. Murdoch recommends a new watch for the man on your list – choose from a stunning dress watch from Pierre Laurent, or a more casual every day selection from Momentum. Sterling silver bracelets and necklaces are also a popular choice in men's jewelry, as they combine style with masculinity, and Murdoch also has a selection of natural beaded necklaces in garnet or black onyx, which are a popular fashion choice right now. If it's a golf-nut you're shopping for, there is plenty to be excited about in the way of golf gifts this › see page 21

holiday season, at a range of price points depending on how much you're planning to spend. An electronic golf-score counter can help ensure your significant other stays on top of his game, while a new golf umbrella is an excellent gift for golfers here in the northwest, where it's known to rain once or twice over the winter and spring months. On a larger scale, consider checking out some GPS trackers or rangefinders, to give your golfer an added technological boost to their game. Of course, a new driver or a whole new set of clubs will make for a very merry Christmas morning for anyone who plays the sport. For something a little more casual and low-key, head over to Deals World and browse through their selection of Simon Chang memory foam slippers or flannel lounge pants. Brighten senior's day with perfect gift Personalized, sentimental presents top the list for elderly loved ones

T

he holiday season is the perfect time to wind down for a few weeks and spend extra time visiting with the ones you love, especially those who we may not get the chance to spend a lot of time with throughout the year. Unfortunately, for many of us, elderly friends and relatives fall into this category. And while the senior citizens in our lives are usually happy to simply spend some time with their families over Christmas, it's nice to be able to give them a special gift, too. You'd be hard-pressed to find a grandma or grandpa who doesn't like trinkets and mementos that remind them of their grandchildren. With today's remarkable photoprinting technology, you can have an adorable snapshot printed on almost any item.

If it's a collector you have on your list, Border Gold on North Bluff Road has something that is sure to delight this Christmas. alking around the local shops and businesses with your Christmas list in hand, you may be surprised to see how much innovative technology is available for people of all ages and walks of life. Computers, smart phones, tablets and other gadgets are all the rage this holiday season – and while they make a nice addition under the tree, all the technology in the world can’t compare with the joy that a good book can bring. From inspiring imaginations to invoking our emotions, books are a simple and affordable way to make a big impact in someone’s life – not to mention provide the benefits of peeling ourselves away from the computers and gadgets for a little while. To find out what the most highly sought-after books are this holiday season, Cathy Jesson, owner of Black Bond Books – which celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this year – gives us the top picks for different age groups.

For the youngest age group, a book that Black Bond staff agrees is their favourite of the year for 2013 is The Day the Crayons Quit. The story follows the trials and tribulations of young Duncan, who wants to colour but has discovered that his crayons have had enough. Beige crayon is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown crayon, Black crayon wants to be used for more than just outlining and Blue is tired of colouring all those lakes and oceans. Duncan will have to find a way to appease his beloved crayons and get them back doing what they do best. Also popular is the brand-new Pete the Cat book: Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses. “These are so much fun to read for the little ones,” Jesson said. “We also have Pete the Cat’s Christmas on sale right now, too.” For the six to nine age group, the ever-popular Geronimo Stilton character is back with a brand new edition in its Kingdom of Fantasy series, entitled The Volcano of Fire. And another favourite series – Diary of a Wimpy Kid – is back with its eighth edition, Hard Luck. Looking into the slightly older age range – for about nine through

Great selections for little ones include Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses and The Day the Crayons Quit.

12 – Jesson recommends the latest in the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan, entitled The House of Hades. This actionfantasy picks up where The Mark of Athena left off, with Annabeth and Percy tumbling into a pit leading straight to the underworld, while the other five demigods are forced to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. The hottest pick this year for teens is sure to be the final installment in Veronica Roth’s Divergent series, entitled Allegiant. Described as an “explosive conclusion” to the bestselling trilogy, Allegiant reveals the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of young readers around the world.

Adult Fiction A huge staff favourite around Black Bond Books has been The Harem Midwife, by Roberta Rich, a sequel to the popular Midwife

of Venice released in 2011. The book, described as “adventurous, opulent and deliciously exciting” follows Hannah and Isaac Levi, Venetians living in exile, who have set up a new life for themselves in Constantinople, when Hannah is faced with a dilemma that could risk her life, or that of a poor peasant girl. If you’re looking to “scare the heck out of” someone on your list, Jesson suggests the latest Stephen King novel, Doctor Sleep, the highly anticipated sequel to King’s 1977 masterpiece The Shining. Doctor Sleep follows Dan Torrance, a drifter who has been forever haunted by his experiences at the Overlook Hotel and is desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism and violence. And for mystery lovers, Jesson recommends the latest Inspector Rebus novel from Ian Rankin, The Saints of the Shadow Bible. Rebus and Malcolm Fox go head-tohead when a 30-year-old murder investigation resurfaces, forcing Rebus to confront crimes of the past.

Special Interests One of B.C.’s most beloved TV personalities, Mike McCardell, is back with his latest book, Haunting Vancouver: A Nearly True History. In McCardell’s most recent release, he embarks on a rollicking tour of Vancouver history, full of tongue-in-cheek humour and fascinating local

history and photos. For something from one of our country’s more recent great heroes, check out Cmdr. Chris Hadfield’s memoir, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. Hadfield, who earlier this year gained fame across Canada and worldwide when he took command of the International Space Station, shares the story of his early desires to become an astronaut, the hard work and dedication it took to get there and how earthbound humans can use this type of dedication to achieve happiness and success in their lives. Judging from the turnout at Hadfield’s recent book signing, held at Black Bond’s Central City location – close to 1,400 fans showed up, and Hadfield signed more than 900 copies – Jesson expects this memoir to be a hot-ticket item for months to come. If there is an art enthusiast on your list, or someone who appreciates true beauty, Jesson suggests In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven, which documents the actual landscapes that inspired and influenced the famous Group of Seven artists. And for the foodie on your shopping list, The White Spot Cookbook would make a great addition, featuring classic and contemporary dishes inspired by local celebrity chefs, fully illustrated with mouth-watering photos.

This year's hottest toys for girls and boys From games and puzzles to trains and dolls, plenty to delight the young ones this year

I

f you have any little ones on your Christmas list this year, you’ll be curious to learn about the hottest picks in toys for the holiday season. Santa’s little elves have had a busy couple of months, working hard on an amazing range of toys for the all the girls and boys who have been good this year. According to Sandy Smith of Cotton ‘N’ Crayon Children’s Wear and Toys, there is an exciting selection of toys, games, puzzles, dolls and more to choose from, depending on a child’s interests. Card games and board games continue to be a popular choice for practically all ages, and make for a great activity to keep the little ones busy during holiday visits and over the winter break from school. Gamewright – a small company founded by four parents looking for high-quality games with outstanding play value, which has won several awards over the past few decades – has a great selection of games around the $20 range, Smith said. If it’s a younger child you’re shopping for, Smith suggests Tell A Story or Mystery Garden, games that are designed for four yearsplus, use picture cards and help to develop literacy skills. For the six-plus age category, Smith recommends two of the most popular selections, Too Many Monkeys and Rat-a-Tat Cat. For the slightly older kids (eight-plus), There's A Moose in the House and Zeus on the Loose are two top picks that can be enjoyed by kids and parents alike. Another Gamewright game that is gaining popularity for this age range is called Rory’s Story Cubes, an imagination game that comes with several little cubes that allow kids to make up stories based on images on the cubes. “It comes in a small box that you can tuck away in your purse or pocket,” Smith said. “It’s great for

when kids get bored.” Forbidden Desert – a thrilling survival board game – is a good choice for kids around the age of 10 years and up, as well as Castle Keep, a game of medieval maneuvers that uses colours and shapes. For something that will really get your little ones’ brains going, Smith recommends ThinkFun Games, which focus on solving problems and challenges. Popular titles include Lazer Maze, Zingo and Swish Jr. When it comes to toys to put under the tree this Christmas, a frontrunner this year is the line of wooden train sets by Brio – a popular brand for many years that Smith said has recently been updated. “They have really come back this past year and modernized the system,” she said. “There are lots of different sets, and the doors open in neat ways, kids can put their little people in. It’s always been one of my favourites.” Another popular brand for youngsters, Playmobil, has a new line of take-along doll houses, perfect for trips to gramma’s house. In time for the holidays, Playmobil has also released a small take-along Christmas scene, as well as a variety of advent calendars. Recommended for toddlers up

There are plenty of great toys on the market for kids of all ages, including Brio train sets (top) Gamewright card and board games (above) and age-appropriate Lottie dolls (inset).

to age four or five is the line of toys from WOW, which carries everything from helicopters to tractors, police cars to diggers, ambulances and boats. These battery-free, London-made toys work with a friction motor and encourage safe, imaginative play. For parents concerned about the use of plastic, Hape baby and toddler toys are made completely from wood, and include things like cash registers, old-fashioned push and pull toys, an abacus and more. Cotton ‘N’ Crayon has a number of great doll lines in store, Sandy said, many that try to steer away from the extreme body image that comes along with dolls like Barbie. One such line – known as Lottie dolls – is all about the fashion, but with a more wholesome, ageappropriate body shape and image. Lottie also doesn’t wear makeup, jewellery or high heels and can stand on her own two feet. This line also comes in unique doll styles, including Pirate Queen, Robot Girls and Kawaii Karate Lottie.

A great suggestion for a stocking stuffer this year, Smith says, is a new product that has been so popular they’ve had a hard time keeping it on the shelves, called Happy Dough. “It’s the closest thing I’ve felt to homemade Play-Doh, and it’s made with beeswax, so it’s so soft and as you’re playing with it, your hands get soft, too,” she explained. Happy Dough is also infused with aromatherapy oils, and each different colour has a different scent – lavender, tangerine, mint and lemon. They’re available in individual packets or in a four-pack with all the different colours included. And of course, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a Ravensburger puzzle under the tree for the ‘older kids’ – this year there are a few different holiday scenes available, including a cobble stone bridge, the tree in Rockefeller Square, New York, the usual Santa, plus some beautiful selections in their Canadian Artist Series from artist Pauline Paquin.

Surprise your teen with something unexpected

O

f all the names on a Christmas shopping list, they may be the most difficult to cross off, inciting confusion and sometimes panic in those who attempt to surprise them with the perfect present. But fear not – if you are shopping for a teenager this holiday season, there is still hope in finding them something they will truly love. Teens often have strong opinions when it comes to style, so if you're wary about buying them new clothes for when they head back to school in January, a safer bet would be a nice, new cozy pair of pyjamas. At PJ'ZZZZ Bed Bath Sleep in Morgan Crossing, you can find a fun and funky selection of PJ'ZZZZ brand flannel draw-string pants in a variety of crazy prints – the skull print and macaroon prints are particularly popular among the teenage crowd. Selections from the PJ Salvage line include plenty of bright colours and quirky patterns, including flannels and thermals, perfect for lounging about the house over

in their cherished new jammies, your teen will be ready to get out and burn off some energy – not to mention those extra holiday goodies. Peninsula Runners has just the thing for the athletically minded teen on your list – a huge selection of Nike Free shoes in a range of colours and styles. Specifically designed to let your feet move more naturally and freely – which result in stronger feet – Nike Frees are some of the most highly sought after running shoes on the market, and would be greeted with much enthusiasm on Christmas morning. If your teen is into braving the elements by running outdoors and on jogging trails, you may want to consider the Nike Wildhorse Trail Running Shoe, which combine ultra light-weight mesh for optimal ventilation with stitched collar bindings that help keep the elements out. If you're unsure of exactly the colour or style your teen might want, Peninsula Runner owner Paul Williams suggests purchas-

ing one of their brand-new gift cards, redeemable for anything in the store. The cards come with an added bonus, too – five per cent of the purchase made on the card will go back onto the customer's account to be used towards a future purchase. Stop by the 1708 152 St. store to find out more. If the teen you're shopping for is into the arts moreso than sports, why not buy them a few months' worth of music lessons, courtesy of White Rock's Tapestry Music? The Johnston Road music store has 12 teaching studios at two nearby locations, and their teaching staff consists of more than a dozen professional musicians with years of education and experience to pass onto your future rock star. Lessons offered include guitar, saxophone, piano, voice, flute, clarinet, violin, drums, trumpet and more – plus Tapestry has a huge range of instruments and accessories to get your teen started on their new hobby. Gift cards in $25, $50 and $100 denominations are also available.
