Warren Rogers obituary: Popular Duncan publican killed after being hit by a car Peter W. Rusland

r. Fix-it. Father. Computer geek. Roughriders fan. Baseball pitcher. Curler. Barkeep. Friend. These and many other titles were used by family to describe Warren Rogers, who died Sunday in Victoria hospital. His death followed being struck by a car Saturday night along Duncan’s highway strip. He was 49. “Warren was probably the smartest person I ever met,” said former partner Amy deWit, with whom Rogers owned Duncan’s Courts Sports Lounge for the past eight years. “He ran the computers and arranged everything.” “He could do anything on computers,” echoed daughter Morgan, one of Rogers’ four kids —the other children being Jordan, 2, Chase, 5, and Kayne, 15. The Regina native’s sudden death shocked his many friends and patrons — who he hosted for events like the Courts’ popular Saturday afternoon music jam, and UFC TV fight nights. “I’ve had at least 1,000 messages,” said deWit, shaken by Rogers’ death. “Wrong place, wrong time.” She and Morgan, 19, explained Rogers died after stumbling off the sidewalk near Duncan’s Warren Rogers: Dog House restaurant. four children “He walked into the car,” deWit said of the vehicle driven by a female. “She was with him the entire time,” Morgan added of the driver’s care for her critically injured father. He was whisked to Cowichan District Hospital, then airlifted to Victoria General Hospital. more on A7
Second World War veteran robbed of his medals Replacement likely: Thieves raid Arbutus Ridge man of four honours earned serving in Europe and Asia Don Bodger
News Leader Pictorial
A
ceremony at Government House in Victoria Dec. 10 may have to wait until a valley Second World War veteran who had his medals stolen either gets them back or a replacement set arrives from England. Gerald Farrow, who turns 93 on Dec. 3 and lives at Arbutus Ridge, had four war medals stolen from a vehicle while it was parked at the Valleyview Centre last Tuesday afternoon. Farrow is among the people being honoured by Lt. Gov. of B.C. Judith Guichon a week after his birthday. Farrow is obviously distressed at the loss of
his medals: the 1939-45 Battle of Britain Star, the Burma Star, the Defence Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. Each of the medals is in a black clamshell case and has the service number 7349476 engraved on the back. Farrow isn’t holding out much hope of the medals being returned. “It didn’t enter my mind that someone would help themselves to it,’’ he said. Farrow said the culprit might not have known exactly what they were taking. “The trouble is they put them in nice little boxes,’’ he said. “You’d think it was jewelry. You wouldn’t know.’’ Farrow is astonished how people from the Shawnigan Lake RCMP to the British government have been jumping through hoops to do
whatever they can. “To be honest with you, I’ve been amazed at the support I’ve had,’’ he said. “Everybody has put themselves out.’’ Farrow’s brother-in-law did some groundwork after the incident by contacting the Governor General in Ottawa, and officials in Victoria were also notified. “We explained the circumstances,’’ said Farrow. “We phoned England. They said they’d get a new set. “England has said they can’t guarantee they’ll get here by the 10th. It may still be the 10th if they come. “They don’t destroy these medals. They make them.’’ more on A7 bchonda.com
