Monday morning saw a major development in the Surrey Six trial, which the general public may not hear about for some time due to a publication ban.

The Twitterverse erupted in outrage, as court reporters sat muzzled by a judicial order banning publication of a development in the case at 11 a.m. Monday.

“Interim publication ban imposed at #surreysix trial so can’t report today’s happenings,” tweeted Surrey Leader reporter Sheila Reynolds, who is covering the trial and is tweeting under @sheilaleader.

“Due to yet another publication ban I can not report what is happening at #SurreySix murder case. It is a major development,” tweeted CTV’s Lisa Rossington under the handle @ctv_lisa.

Several outlets encouraged the others to fight the ban in court.

Michael Le are currently on trial in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver for firstdegree murder and conspiracy in connection with the Oct. 19, 2007 mass murder of six men in the Balmoral Tower apartment building in North Surrey.

They are accused of killing alleged drug dealers Edward Narong, Ryan Bartolomeo, and brothers Corey and Michael Lal, and bystanders Edward Schellenberg of Abbotsford and Christopher Mohan of Surrey.

The trial of Haevischer, Le and Johnston is expected to last up to a year. The trial has been adjourned until Wednesday (Nov. 27).

Jamie Bacon is also charged in the murder of Corey Lal, but he will be tried at a later date.

A man wanted for the robbery of two Abbotsford businesses an hour apart on Oct. 22 has been arrested and charged.

Kerry Paul Morin, 25, of no fixed address, was arrested on Thursday just after noon by members of the Abbotsford Police Department’s emergency response team and major crime unit.

He was walking in the 9500 block of 199A Street in Langley at the time of the arrest.

Const. Ian MacDonald said Morin was being tailed by police, who had

been keeping an eye on him and were waiting for the best time to make an arrest.

Morin has now been charged with two counts of robbery and two counts of using an imitation firearm.

The robberies occurred at about 4:45 p.m. at the Red Apple Food Store on Marshall Road and at 5:40 p.m. at the Esso convenience store on Huntingdon Road on Oct. 22.

In the first incident, the suspect was wearing a dark hoodie and a ball cap with the rim turned forward.

In the second robbery, the man was wearing a white zip-up jacket and had turned the ball cap around.

In both cases, he wore sunglasses and was carrying a handgun.

In an effort to identify the suspect, police released a photo on Oct. 23 that was obtained from security video of the Red Apple robbery.

They followed that with the release of the video on Oct. 31.

Morin has been released from custody on $1,000 bail and is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 6 on the robbery charges.

The city issued an eviction notice Monday to a protest camp established at Jubilee Park, asking for tents and belongings to be removed.

Deputy city manager Jake Rudolph spoke to the media Monday, saying 48 hours’ notice had been given to remove the tents and structures for safety reasons.

The protest started in late October, when members of the Abbotsford chapter of the BC/Yukon Drug War Survivors gathered to raise awareness about the needs of the city’s most marginalized residents.

The group initially planned to stay only a few days, but protest organizer Barry Shantz soon announced the peaceful protest was extended until there was a housing solution for homeless people.

Rudolph said the city has “no intentions of disrupting anyone’s right to protest,” but added that police, bylaw officers and fire services staff have noted several safety violations.

Fire chief Don Beer noted several fire safety issues, such as household appliances – a coffeemaker and a microwave – being run from an electrical box in the park on which the lock had been broken.

Shantz said many of the safety concerns are legitimate, “but since (the homeless have) been in the park, I’d say they’re a lot safer than they were before.”

Rudolph said the city is aware that dismantling the camp will not solve issues of homelessness and they are trying to connect homeless in the park with social agencies and service providers.

In May, the BC/Yukon Drug War Survivors filed a civil suit against the City of Abbotsford over the city’s bylaw against harm reduction practices, stating the municipality overstepped its authority by prohibiting certain health services. The group also filed a human rights complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.

Though the eviction notice has been issued, Shantz said the group’s protest against the city isn’t over.

“They just want this problem to go away, and it’s not going away easy.”

Mediterranean fruit growing well here Kiwi farmer finds early success in other warm climate fruit Alina KONEVSKI Abbotsford News

When George Petkov left Macedonia for B.C. a decade ago, he brought his culture of lush Mediterranean fruits with him.

The farmer has been growing kiwis in Abbotsford since 2008.

Early this month, he harvested 45,000 kilograms of kiwifruit – that’s about 650,000 individual kiwis.

Although the young plants produced double the amount they did last year, the long-range fruit vines require another few years before reaching maturity and full production.

While Petkov waits for the kiwi trees to mature, he has been experimenting with 20 other types of Mediterranean fruit.

Petkov’s eightacre field in west Abbotsford is dominated by overhanging trellises of kiwi plants.

On the edges is a delightful assortment of fruits typical of warmer climates: the pomegranates, persimmons, gooseberries, and chokeberries are the most exotic. There are also figs, plums, prunes, apricots, currants, peaches, nectarines, three varieties of cherries, and raspberries and thornless

“It is enough to see from a few plants, if it will work or not,” explained Petkov.

Petkov grew up around a 12-acre family fruit farm in Macedonia, where all of the above were regular crops. He moved to B.C. a decade ago and managed grape vineyards in the Fraser Valley before launching Petkov Kiwi Production.

Kiwis are a finicky plant. Only a very specific location will suit them, and growing them is labour-intensive. The benefit is a lack of natural predators and diseases; they are easy to grow organic.

Pomegranates and persimmons, on the other hand, require much less work than the sensitive kiwi, with similar resistance to diseases and pests.

They are a new crop

in B.C. Few farmers are experimenting with them, according to the ministry of agriculture.

Petkov’s test trees are healthy and have not suffered frost damage, he said. He is looking to buy farmland in Abbotsford and expand some of his test fruits to full production.

He hopes the British Columbian palate embraces the new fruits, such as the choke-

berries – a nutritious sweet and sour berry, usually red or black in colour, that is richer in antioxidants than blueberries.

“They are still small bushes,” said Petkov of his chokeberries, also know as aronia. “There is no question that they will make (fruit).

Only thing is, who will start first? The market? But they are very, very healthy.”

Kiwi are less exotic

in the province, with several farmers on Vancouver Island growing them. Plants will only die if temperatures drop below -18°C, which they seldom do on the West Coast. But because of their sensitive natures, kiwis remain difficult to grow successfully, which limits how many farmers adopt them.

Petkov has been having little trouble making the most of his eight acres. His kiwis are currently filling about 250 crates stacked to the rafters of a cold storage facility in an Abbotsford barn.

The fruits will ripen slowly over the coming months as Petkov sorts them for sale.

Many will line the shelves of a major grocery chain in B.C. Others will appear at Vancouver farmers’ markets. Still others will surprise children at schools as part of the government’s healthy snack program, officially called the B.C. School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program.

Over the coming years, Petkov hopes that B.C.-grown pomegranate, persimmon, and other still exotic fruits join his B.C.grown kiwis on grocery fruit shelves.

Guilty plea in Abby’s largest cocaine bust Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A man whose arrest resulted in the Abbotsford Police Department’s largest ever cocaine seizure pleaded guilty on Friday in Abbotsford provincial court.

Matthew Stamper, 24, pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking for the 60 kilograms of cocaine he was carrying on Feb. 2.

Two officers in separate cars were driving in the 2000 block of Clearbrook Road – near Highway 1 – when they spotted Stamper standing in a parking lot beside two duffel bags. The officers thought he looked nervous, as he kept picking up and putting down the bags.

The officers approached Stamper and discovered that the bags were padlocked, and he wasn’t giving any clear answers about what was in them.

A search of the bags revealed that they contained a total of 60 kilos of cocaine, worth an estimated street value of between $1.2 and $1.8 million.

At the time of the arrest, police said they believed Stamper had been waiting for a ride and, because of his proximity to the freeway, was likely headed out of Abbotsford.

He is next scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 2 for a sentencing hearing.

Blakeborough’s team chose the girl’s statement as a title for the video.

Providing multiple benefits to students, the CoCurricular Record (CCR) — an official transcript of students’ out-of-class involvement on campus — will open doors to increased engagement and improved employability. And it’s already in place.

Students just need to register for it.

As an added bonus, Student Life offers 30-minute CCR info sessions until Dec. 5 for students (Tuesdays 1:30–2 pm at U-house, F110), and staff and faculty (Thursdays 1–1:30 pm, U-house).

Metro backs Abbotsford call for aid to stop erosion New damage threatens the Matsqui dike Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Metro Vancouver has placed its support behind Abbotsford’s call for provincial aid to help stop erosion on the banks of the Fraser River that could threaten the Matsqui dike.

An erosion arc formed this year in Matsqui Trail Regional Park – land owned by Metro Vancouver. The river has three erosion arcs that existed previously, but Abbotsford council raised the concern in September that the new erosion had come within 30 metres of the Matsqui dike. City consultants recommended new measures to protect it before next spring’s freshet.

As the Fraser River is under provincial jurisdiction, the city has called on the province to remove gravel bars in the vicinity of

Abbotsford to help prevent more erosion and for funding to repair the new damage.

Besides protecting land from flooding, the dike forms the backbone of the park and creates the 11-kilometre Matsqui Trail corridor shared by the Trans Canada Trail and the Experience The Fraser Canyon-to-Coast Trail.

“People are going to experience the Fraser alright – right through their front doors if we don’t do something about this,” Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman

told a recent Metro environment and parks committee meeting.

Banman told The News that Metro Vancouver’s endorsement for aid is important to fixing for problem.

“Whenever you have everybody agreeing, the likelihood of the proper outcome is much higher.”

He said there is a strong spring freshet next year, the results could be dramatic.

“We’re worried it could undermine the dike. It could collapse and fall into the water

and we will get flooding into some of the most valuable farmland in Canada.”

Though the request for provincial assistance was endorsed by Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Coun. Heather Deal said any work along the river needs to avoid damaging salmon habitat.

The city previously consulted Emergency Management BC to assist with erosion damage, but the provincial agency said the situation did not qualify for funding because there is no immediate emergency.

Abbotsford will continue to seek assistance from all levels of government before next spring, while water levels are low.

“This is now a case of saving and protecting the integrity of the dike, and for that we will need provincial and federal help.”

Local election caps considered One thing that the circus at Toronto city hall has done is raise awareness about the role and importance of civic government – especially what happens when government doesn’t function.

Most of the time, people couldn’t care less about who runs city hall unless their garbage pickup is late or mishandled. Voter turnout is typically abysmal, and half the time, people couldn’t tell you who a local councillor is and that’s a shame. By giving up their vote, the electorate hands over the job of electing people to special interest groups such as unions and developers, which disproportionately contribute to election campaigns and, thus, potentially hold more sway.

Could this situation be addressed?

Possibly, if civic campaigns were more open, affordable and accessible. It could be argued that voters tune out from local elections because of the sheer size

and complexity of the campaigns. They may feel a certain distance from the process, believing it’s best left to others with deeper knowledge — or pockets.

To make civic election campaigns more affordable, the provincial government is looking at implementing a cap on election expenses and is asking the public for input. This is certainly one issue worth considering.

Currently, election expenses are posted online well after the election has taken place but if people really want to know who is buying their candidate’s vote, they should be able to get that information as soon as the cheque is cashed.

Anything that can make civic elections fair, open and transparent will be a good thing because we shouldn’t need a drugaddled mayor and shoving matches in council chambers before people care.

Other Hand It’s easy to say “ban them” when referring to pit bulls, or any other inherently aggressive dog. But where do you draw the line?

I have had, for the past 16 or so years, standard poodles. Beautiful, gentle and very large, but you wouldn’t want to have messed with me when my big black dog was in his prime. Neither would you want to enter my fenced property unannounced at night. He was very protective.

Otherwise he was about as friendly as you could find a dog. He just had his aggression triggers. Another of my poodles wouldn’t hurt a flea. Yet I was and am always wary when small children are on the property.

Dogs, at least the ones I always have, are big, boisterous and even if they aren’t aggressive, always need to be kept under control.

And that is the problem that happens far too frequently with pit bulls and their various approximations. Many of their owners don’t have them under control.

They’re often untrained, other than perhaps not to crap in the house, off-leash and unmuzzled when accessible to other dogs and people.

I must admit only sporadic contact with pit bulls. One was a lost pup that showed up on my doorstep, the sweetest most gentle little guy you ask for. And when we found his owner, I’m sure he probably stayed that way. The other occasions were contact with extremely aggressive pit bulls on the next door property when it was going through its various iterations of grow ops and chop shops. Fortunately, the cops took care of them, the operators and, along with them, the nasty dogs. In those instances, the animals were there for a purpose: to keep people and prying eyes away from the nefarious activities of their owners, and the aggression towards others was intended.

Not something you want next door, nor should you feel the need to carry a shotgun while raking leaves in the back yard.

So while I am uncomfortable with pit

bulls, I also am a little wary when approached by a rottweiler, cane corso or doberman, though the latter has always held a bit of an appeal to me and is, I have been told, one of the foundation breeds along with the Portuguese waterdog used to develop the standard poodle. Never been

Certainly the poodle has a long, toothfilled snout and it, on the negative-positive ratings available on the Internet, not particularly good around small children. My dogs have, to some extent, borne that out.

So because of that my dogs, even on my own property, are often collared and leashed when small visitors arrive.

And if I feel that responsible within the confines of a fenced yard, should not those with even more assumed ‘dangerous’ dogs, regardless of the breed, be required to be as responsible when out in public?

A short leash, a muzzle – they are not cruel to the dog, and in fact will protect it from incidents such as the one that happened in Vancouver when a man stabbed to death a pit bull as it was attacking his pug.

Maybe the pug started it all, it was off-leash while the pit bull apparently was leashed.

The point therefore, is that all dogs should be leashed – from tiny ankle biters to the large aggressive ones – when they are in the public domain.

To do otherwise is not responsible pet ownership.

To solve that, rather than banning a breed or an entire host of breeds that is considered to have been developed to be aggressive, any legislation (municipal or otherwise) should be aimed at the owner, and the absolute requirement for control, which means leashes and muzzles when not confined in a secure residential setting. Anyone found not in compliance should receive a stiff fine and immediate seizure of the animal.

Spiritual care workers are needed Re: “Make [hospital spiritual care] service user-pay,� Nov. 19 edition.

Stephen Keeling asks, “Why is this something every taxpayer need concern themselves with?� I would like to suggest that there are legitimate answers to that question.

First of all, “spiritual care� is different than mere “religious� or even “pastoral care.�

Spiritual care is based on the reality that people receiving treatment in our hospitals are not just in need of physical, emotional and or mental care; they are also in need of social and spiritual care. Regardless of whatever religious affiliation or lack of affiliation that patients (and, for that matter, staff who have to deal with patients’ concerns) may happen to have or not have, every one of us is in need of some recognition and treatment for our spiritual self, whatever that may include. So spiritual care deals with the worth of human beings, the value of our humanity, the meaning

and the quality of our lives, and any concerns that may be related to patients’ and families’ end-of-life concerns.

Regardless whether people have faith, or no faith, some aspect of these issues must be of concern for each patient (and staff), especially when they find themselves in a serious treatment or healthcare crisis situation.

Believing that social care workers in the hospital can provide adequate spiritual care to patients and staff when required is a mistaken notion. They are not trained for nor experienced in providing such care. Chaplains/ spiritual care practitioners are. They did it well and without denominational or faith community bias. Ask administrators and staff at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. They will tell you that such leadership which helped to train and galvanize community volunteers is sorely missed.

Fireworks ban still a good idea I agree that when used properly, fireworks are truly spectacular and at the same time, usually quite safe.

However, increasing the opportunity to attain fireworks, even with good intentions, would have more negative impacts than positive.

The legalization of fireworks along with the idea to educate people on proper usage is quite optimistic.

Granted, some will, through education, learn to properly handle fireworks, but everyone else will have an easier time getting their hands on something potentially dangerous.

Some will not adhere to the proper uses of fireworks. Once again, the negatives outweigh the positives.

Just because we are a minority compared to other municipalities does not mean we are in the wrong. There are reasons that Abbotsford decided to ban fireworks, mainly for safety, that are still relevant. This ruling did not appear out of thin air, the safety of Abbotsford citizens is still the priority.

Nearly 400 aging power poles in Abbotsford will be replaced over the next several months.

According to Mora Scott, BC Hydro spokesperson, the average pole’s life expectancy is 50 years. Over time, wooden poles weaken due to adverse weather, insects and wildlife.

The Crown corporation regularly inspects the old poles and swaps them out for safety and to strengthen the reliability of the electricity system.

Approximately 500 guests came out for the event that saw 91 nominees vie for awards in 11 categories.

The celebration was sponsored by the Abbotsford News and the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce.

Rick Rake, chair of the Business Excellence committee, served as master of ceremonies.

The opening reception featured networking followed by a buffet dinner.

Toys for Tots happens Nov. 29 A new fundraiser takes place in Abbotsford on Friday, Nov. 29 to raise funds for the Abbotsford Food Bank and Christmas Bureau.

The Ramada Toys for Tots Christmas Breakfast runs from 6 to 9 a.m. at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre in partnership with Envision Financial.

Health review team to look at FHA budget Health Minister Terry Lake has named a nine-member review committee to probe why Fraser Health struggles to keep spending within its budget.

The committee co-chairs are existing Fraser board chair David Mitchell and Northern Health board chair Dr. Charles Jago.

Other members include

Northern Health CEO Cathy Ulrich, Vancouver Coastal CEO Dr. David Ostrow, the finance minister’s assistant deputy minister Chris Brown, the health minister’s associate deputy minister Elaine McKnight, plus three more health care executives from Interior Health and the Provincial Health Services Authority.

The group meets for the first time later this month and is expected to identify potential operational changes by May. NDP health critic Judy Darcy urged the review committee to provide some opportunity for public input, especially if it’s going to lead to significant cost cutting and service impacts.

Banff film fest at Clarke Fresh footage of outdoor adventures from around the world will return with the Best of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, Nov. 26 to 27 at Mission’s Clarke Theatre.

Spearheaded by University of the Fraser Valley kinesiology instructor Roger Friesen, the annual event brings two entirely different film sets each evening, ranging from featurelength films from major organizations such as National Geographic and PBS to shoestring shorts shot in people’s backyards.

“The films cover a wide spectrum of topics from mountain sport, mountain culture, high octane sport, adventure, conservation, ecology, and more,” said Friesen.

Single-night tickets are $16, with a discounted rate of $28 for those attending both nights, which start at 7 p.m. UFV’s Kinesiology Student Association organizes the event and runs the concession, generating funds for the KPESA, as well as for charity.

Tickets can be purchased at: Wenting Cycle & Mountain Shop in Mission; Valhalla Pure, Western Canoeing & Kayaking, and Lifecycles in Abbotsford; Mt. Waddington outdoor store in Chilliwack; and the UFV Hope centre in Hope.

esthetics, automotive, forestry, oil, and health care will be on hand to provide attendees with information about their industry and what it takes to excel within it.

The lower mainland and Alberta events offer the THINK!nternational feature area which highlights study, work, travel and volunteer opportunities abroad. At each event, visitors are encouraged to attend the Seminar Sessions presented by industry professionals. Seminars are 30 minutes in length and cover popular topics in the labor market and industry trends.

Though Michelle Kask never had plans to travel to China, in April she will embark on a fascinating trip to see a country she never dreamed of visiting.

The Abbotsford school district employee was “in disbelief” to learn she had won the trip in a contest held by the Chamber of Commerce and the Abbotsford News.

Though Kask never planned on seeing China, a love of travel pushed her to enter the contest.

“It’s just a whole different world over there.

The things I’m going to see, I’m sure, will be amazing and wonderful and things I would never get a chance to see if I hadn’t won the contest.”

The trip, which is organized by the Chamber of Commerce and open to the public, takes place from April 4 to 12, visiting four of China’s leading cities – Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai, including a visit to the Great Wall of China.

Kask said she and her husband Sean travelled before their two children were born, and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to do so again. Kask is planning to bring her husband along on the trip to China.

She said she is

thrilled to be visiting the Great Wall of China, and as a lover of green tea, is excited to visit a factory to see how it gets made.

Allan Asaph, executive director of the chamber, has travelled to China on the same trip. He said learning about the history and culture of the country from experienced guides “totally changed my understanding of China.

Series ends for season The final concert of the 2013 Envision Coffee House Concert Series takes place Nov. 30 in Abbotsford.

Now’s The Time is a jazz trio dedicated to playing various song forms from the standard jazz repertoire, as well as originals from within the same idiom.

Given the storied history of the boys volleyball program at Mennonite Educational Institute, you almost wonder if there’s any history left to be made.

This year’s edition of the Eagles junior boys squad, though, managed to stake out some uncharted territory on Saturday when they beat the Earl Marriott Mariners in the provincial championship game at MEI Middle. It marked the first time MEI has won back-toback B.C. titles at the junior boys level – they also won it all in 2012.

“It feels awesome,” enthused Kaden Gamache, who plays right side and setter for the Eagles and was named MVP of the provincial tourney.

“This is a goal we set out at the beginning of the season – we know MEI’s never really done this before, and we were pushing to do it. We had a ton of pressure on ourselves, but we earned it. We worked really hard all season.”

The host squad came in as the top seed, but ran into some adversity in the quarter-finals against Clarence Fulton of Vernon. Fulton was the No. 2-ranked team in the province, but had suffered upset losses during pool play which caused them to clash with MEI earlier in the playoff draw than might have been expected.

The Eagles survived in a three-set thriller, then disposed of Langley Fundamental in the semis, setting up a date with Marriott in the final. The South Surrey squad had carved out a Cinderella narrative, vastly outperforming their No. 12 ranking en route to the title game.

MEI, though, won in straight sets before an enthusiastic home crowd.

Middle Carson Bargen (first team) and setter/right side Brendan Loewen (second team) earned all-star nods, while Steven Pankratz was named top libero.

Head coach Brad Knodel has been involved with the Eagles junior boys for 10 seasons now, helping guide the team to four B.C. titles during that span.

He said this year’s

edition of the squad might be the deepest and most versatile he’s worked with – in the final, all 11 players got into the game.

“And that wasn’t charity – I needed all

11 guys,” Knodel said.

“Most guys could play two or three positions, which is pretty rare.

“To win back-to-back says something about the program . . . we’ve had some consistency.”

Landmark wins for CBC hoopsters Abbotsford News

Last Friday, the Columbia Bible College basketball teams combined for a feat which they hadn’t accomplished in at least four years – sweeping a pair of home games on the same night.

The Bearcats women got things started with a 59-50 victory over the Kwantlen Eagles, and the men followed with a 67-59 win over their Kwantlen counterparts.

It was a particularly noteworthy night for the CBC women, who had just one win over the past six seasons in the PacWest conference, that one coming in 2009.

“When I came in, there was a huge feeling of defeat over the program,” said Tamara Larson, who took the head coaching reins for the ’Cats women in 2012.

“This game, it was just huge . . . for the program itself. I can’t say enough about how hard the players worked.”

Sarah Rozendal, Deanna Esau and Mandy Van Muyen were among the standouts for the Bearcats women, who improved to 1-5 on the season.

In the men’s game, CBC encountered some late adversity. Nursing a 59-55 lead with 1:12 remaining, Marcio Juk drove into the lane and found Addison King open for a three-pointer.

But the referees whistled Juk for a charging foul, simultaneously negating the basket and sidelining the conference’s leading scorer with his fifth foul.

The Bearcats battled to the finish line, though, hitting their free throws to salt the game away.

Juk (19 points, nine rebounds, six assists) and Mack Thompson (16 points) were the top scorers as CBC boosted its record to 2-4.

“The guys were excited to be at home,” head coach Matt Guynup said,

On Saturday, Ortio picked up his first career AHL shutout, turning aside all 25 shots the Minnesota Wild affiliate sent his way in a 4-0 victory while boosting his personal record to a perfect 9-0 this season.

The University of the Fraser Valley basketball teams struggled on their toughest road trip of the season, dropping all four games against nationally ranked foes from the universities of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The women’s match-ups were particularly high-profile, as the Cascades were a perfect 6-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation heading into the trip. The Alberta Pandas, meanwhile, were ranked No. 4, and the Saskatchewan Huskies were No. 5.

UFV came out on the wrong end of a sweep, though, falling 73-61 in Edmonton on Friday and 77-57 in Saskatoon on Saturday.

The men’s squad (3-5) fared no better, dropping a 94-66 decision to the No.4 Alberta Golden Bears and losing 83-62 to the No. 5 Huskies.

Some years ago an employee of a cat boarding facility brought into the hospital a cat boarder that was flat out and non-responsive. The cat was diabetic and the caregivers at the boarding facility religiously gave the cat her insulin every 12 hour as directed. Unfortunately the cat was not eating her normal amount of food, and thus was receiving too much insulin. As a consequence she became hypoglycemic. Luckily after three days of intensive treatment the cat did recover and could go home. After this cat went home, we knew the Fraser Valley area needed a place where owners could board their cats where the caregivers not only understood cat behavior, but also were knowledgeable about feline health.

It was then we decided that we would open the Cat Nap Inn in the mezzanine above the Fraser Valley Animal Hospital.

Presently we have an older diabetic cat staying with us for a long-term visit as his owner broke her arm. Joey, though eating and taking his medication, seemed very lonely.

So Dr. Horvatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cat came to visit, and now Brandon and Joey nap together and have a daily snuggle with a cat nip blanket â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like we said, we do whatever is required to make our guests happy.

Our boarding facility is located above the hospital away from the hustle and bustle of the clinic. We have a variety of rooms available â&#x20AC;&#x201C; jungle rooms with windows to the outside, theme rooms with climbing trees and hiding boxes, and apartments with lofts. Lord. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Margaret, and his daughter, Helen, as well as an extended network of family and friends in Canada, the US, and overseas. Lloyd was predeceased by his son Norman and his sister Louise.

Lloyd was a knowledgeable farmer. After moving to BC from Alberta, he had a well-established organic vegetable farm in West Langley that supplied a variety of grocery stores in the Lower Mainland. In 1980, he and the family moved to the Mt. Lehman area of Abbotsford where he also became well known for breeding full blood Blonde Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Aquitaine cattle. He continued to work on the property until very recently. Lloyd will be best remembered for his warm bear hugs, smile, and greetings of â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love you.â&#x20AC;? A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, November 30th at 1 pm at the Mount Lehman United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help with the outreach of the Mount Lehman United Church.
