This is always a special season for us, with shops decorated for the holidays and full of wonderful unique products and services designed to tantalize, and merchants eager to serve.

The Comox Valley Christmas Parade this past Sunday was as wonderful as ever, and I want to personally thank everyone who participated and made it a success. So many families enjoying the costumes, floats and music were a treat to see. The Downtown Courtenay Business Improvement Association (BIA) board of directors, committee members, and other volunteers working on the parade has put in so much time and effort planning our seasonal events, and with our community sponsors are integral to making them successful.

Their efforts and support continue to make downtown the vibrant community centre that it is.

“The DCBIA Infrastructure Committee was very excited to bring the Façade Improvement program to our membership,” says Kim Stubblefield, Executive Director of the DCBIA. “We feel that this incentive to spruce up building façades is a tangible way to make our downtown streets more inviting and interesting places to be.”

Façade Improvement Programs are available from BIA’s in many communities across the country. These programs are quite often subsidized or matched by

funds from the cities and towns that they reside in.

“This is an important way to directly aid property owners and businesses who make up our membership,” says Stubblefield.

“We are pleased that the Codes Country Lanes and McConochie’s buildings, as the first recipients of this program, have worked out so well. This is one of the many reasons that locating a small business downtown is such a great idea!”

Mental health is no secret at Secret Drawers

S

ecret Drawers coowner Nena Bill was in Victoria, B.C. recently, on a special mission to deliver a cheque to Andrea Paquette, of the Bipolar Babe Project (www. bipolarbabe.com).

“When I delivered the cheque, she was over the moon, smiles Bill. “It was a teary, emotional moment.”

Last July, Bill and her business partner, Vashti Lehre, set by aside a porJennifer tion of their Cox bra sales to support the Bipolar Babe Project. Not only were they thankful for the ability to contribute financially to the cause, they were equally excited to be raising awareness and opening up the conversation on mental health issues.

“I really want to thank all of our customers for contributing, and for sharing their stories. The conversations were amazing,” smiles Bill.

This project is close to Bill’s heart as her daughter Natasha announced in 1998 that she was afflicted by bipolar disorder. This was a difficult time in their family and made Bill determined to do whatever she could to erase the stigma attached to mental health.

The Bipolar Babe project offers anti-stigma school presentations to youth in grades 7-12. By raising awareness, the project opens up the conversation and makes room for understanding, acceptance and empathy. 2013 is the first year that presentations extended across Vancouver Island.

already booking presentations for next year,” says Bill whose daughter is actively involved in health education, promoting the Bipolar Babe project by sharing her story to high school students.

“I wish this organization existed when my daughter was going through it,” says Bill. “The kids relate to her, she is very approachable.

When she talks about her personal experience it has far more impact than hearing it second-hand, and as more people talk about mental health, the stigma goes away.”

At Secret Drawers, staff stand behind the Bipolar Babe message of hope and resilience; no matter what challenges individuals face it is possible to live extraordi-

nary lives.

Bill and Lehre feel blessed to have jobs that allow them to share in the intimate and extraordinary details of their client’s lives.

“I think people feel comfortable here because we love what we do so much, and this reflects in the atmosphere of our shop,” says Lehre. “We firmly believe that what you put out to the community comes back to you.”

“This is a very personal environment where customers feel very safe in sharing their story,” says Bill. “We really care about our clients and our community and feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to support a campaign as important as the Bipolar Babe project.”

Literature and community at the Laughing Oyster Bookstore “I feel such good fortune to have found myself in the perfect place for me,” says Evelyn Gillespie with a bright smile. Gillespie has been proprietor of the Laughing Oyster Bookstore for the past five years.

“I love it when people come in here and say, this is a really well by curated bookJennifer store because Cox that is really what I do,” says Gillespie proudly. Having quality books on the shelves provides a venue for people to come, engage in conversation, share ideas, and open up about the events that are meaningful to their lives.

Taking over a bookstore with a forty-year history in the downtown core has been an inspiring experience and what Gillespie finds most stimulating is the strong sense of community and the depth of conversation that takes place as a result of a shared love of literature.

“My background is in community building,” she explains. “My work has always centred around organizing community and I see the bookstore as its own little community centre. A

If you’re looking for a good mystery…

Gillespie recommends the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series by Louise Penney, an award-winning Canadian mystery writer whose books are often included in the New York Times bestsellers list.

Though this series is highly acclaimed, this is not what drew Gillespie to the books. It was the fact that they were set in the Eastern Townships of Quebec that initially drew her in.

Gillespie enjoyed reading Penney’s descriptions of familiar landmarks that she had personally visited years earlier, but what compelled her to keep reading was the strong characters and fast moving plot.

“I have enjoyed this series so much,” says Gillespie. “Her books have

Book Club Favourite…

One of the great things about being in a book club is the opportunity to read books that you might not otherwise have chosen yourself. Gillespie found herself surprised by her most recent favourite, a book called Quiet: the Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.

“It has been quite a surprise because I don’t think it reflects my personality at all,” laughs Evelyn.

She goes on to explain that being an introvert isn’t about being shy or retiring.

It is about where your ener-

gy comes from and how you respond to stimulation.

“It is very helpful for me in understanding friends and family members who communicate differently or have different needs from how I experience the world.”

Book Club Night…

Laughing Oyster Bookstore staff recently hosted a lovely meet & greet evening, providing an opportunity for book club members to join together and discuss some of their favourite books over a glass of wine and a specially prepared dessert at the Zocalo Café.

“We have many customers who look to certain members of staff for book recommendations,” Gillespie says. “ We all read very differently which means we have a very broad range in what we can suggest to our customers.”

The sun, moon and stars COMOX VALLEY ART GALLERY RAISES MONEY FOR ART AND EDUCATION PROGRAMMING WITH ANNUAL MASQUERADE FUNDRAISER THE ANNUAL Comox Valley Art Gallery (CVAG) Masquerade Ball held in the historic Native Sons Hall has quickly become the social event of the year. Event photographer Ron Pogue captured hundreds of captivating images throughout the evening.

“It was absolutely stellar; hands down the best dressed event in the Valley,” he exclaimed! “I am always impressed with people’s custom-crafted masques and this year was no exception!”

Inviting performers from Triple Heat Dance, ValDance and Vesta Fire provided incredible entertainment as well as guaranteeing that the dance floor was packed all night long. This was certainly a highlight of Le’s evening.

But the biggest highlight is the funds raised for art education and community outreach. This fundraiser allows a dedicated CVAG staff member to deliver consistent programs such as school tours and the popular Art in the Schools initiative. The CVAG works closely with youth by providing a platform for their creativity. Youth media projects provide an opportunity for youth to work with community leaders, creating videos on how to make the community a better place, and a youth printmaking project in collaboration with the Wachiay Friendship Centre has been a huge success.

“It is really exciting what we are able to do,” says Le. “School visits have tripled since we began this fundraiser and we wouldn’t be able to do what we are doing without the amazing community support we’ve received.”

When Leanne Anglin and Joan Tarr went into business in 2002 they did not envision spending a decade as retailers.

Their original intent was to operate as wholesalers, importing containers of teak and mahogany furniture directly from Bali, Indonesia. But when one of their contracts fell through just before the first container arrived they found themselves quickly renting a retail location and shifting the original direction of their business.

This ability to adapt and change with the times has been key to Anglin and Tarr’s success.

They still bring in some imported

items but Tab Imports has evolved over the years into a fashionable furniture and lifestyle store with an eclectic blend of contemporary and traditional pieces.

“We don’t want to pigeon hole ourselves into one particular style, says Anglin. “We are not traditionalists by any means and we are not super contemporary. We try to find a balance in between.”

“It is not every day that people buy furniture so our accessories are an important part of our business,” explains Tarr.

… AT THE SID WITH PATRICK EMERY, MIKE SUTCLIFFE AND ROBINSON WILSON

As the curtains raise, talented performers are front and centre entertaining the crowd, but have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes to ensure each event’s success? Patrick Emery, Mike Sutcliffe and Robinson Wilson like to stay out of the limelight but their technical expertise is central to each show’s success.

Patrick Emery, Technical Director Q: What experience or education led you to your current role?

P.E.: I completed a twoyear technical theatre program at Malaspina followed by a year-long apprenticeship with the BC Touring Council. I have won multiple best lighting design awards at the North Island Zone drama festivals for Theatre BC as well as honourable mentions at both zone and provincial finals. This year marks my 20th year at the Sid. Q: What is a typical day’s work for a show?

P.E. My responsibility is to ensure all aspects of the show’s requirements are addressed and to jump in and assist wherever needed.

Depending on the show I may end up running a position such as lighting or backstage. At the end of the night I am usually the last tech out of the building after assisting the load-out.

Q: What do you do when there isn’t a show in the building?

P.E. The actual shows are only part of the job because every show has requirements that have to be confirmed and arranged for before the act ever gets to Courtenay.

All equipment must be in

place and crews ready to get the show up and going. The Sid is one of the busiest theatres in BC and maintenance is a constant activity!

Q: What is the most memorable show you’ve worked on and why?

P.E: So many special shows have come through the Sid that picking out one show is impossible.

Whether it’s working a show that brings back my childhood such as Mr. Dressup & Tommy Hunter or watching the Rainbow Youth Theatre’s production of CATS or Courtenay Little Theatre’s Christmas Pantomimes, I have a lot of special memories from my time working at The Sid. I have worked bigger shows in Vancouver but they don’t compare to the love this community has shown for the arts.

Q: What is your favourite part about working at the Sid? P.E: That’s an easy one.

The people. Whether it’s the staff here at the theatre or the people who enter The Sid to put their productions on, the arts community in the Valley is the best.

They have become family to me. Watching the kids growing and heading off to their futures and knowing I helped even a little is the best feeling.

un for the whole family! Five-pin bowling is a sport that anyone can participate in. It is entertaining for all ages and abilities, and as a long-standing Canadian tradition it is a sport that Carol Code-Helme feels by Jennifer passionate about keeping in the Cox Comox Valley.

As Carol and her husband, Bob Helme prepared to retire they considered selling the business but there is one thing they are both firm on- they will not sell their downtown bowling alley unless they are sure that the new owners are just as committed to the bowling community as they are.

Not finding buyers that met this criterion, Bob and Carol were thrilled when Carol’s daughter Duwanee, and husband Rick Granneman were interested in taking over, allowing Carol and Bob to retire in August 2013.

“The big thing is that they needed to be able to enjoy their retirement,” explains Duwanee.

“Our number one priority was to keep this bowling alley going because it is so important to the community.”

Carol Code-Halme was thrilled when her daughter Duwanee and husband Rick Granneman agreed to take over the family business in August 2013.

– Duwanee Granneman Carol admits that despite knowing the business is in good hands she finds it hard to let go.

“I’m having a hard time staying away,” says Carol. “It’s hard for me to let go and let Duwanee be in charge.”

Mother and daughter agree that they are a lot alike both in appearance and temperament.

They love the atmosphere of the bowling alley and share a passion for community, especially the special-needs athletes that use the bowling alley on a regular basis.

“We are a very tight knit community that lives and breathes bowling,” says Duwanee. “We have special needs that come in here and bowl every day of the week, so we knew we had to keep this bowling alley in the community.”

Their investment in the special needs community goes beyond their twelve lanes. The family makes a special effort to attend any Special Olympic functions that take place in the community, such as participating with them in the Christmas parade.

“Every day of the week they are here so they feel like family to us,” says Carol. “We go to all of their functions. We go to all their national tournaments across Canada. If there’s a birthday or special event we go to it. All of our bowlers are

Knowing that Duwanee and Rick are just as committed to the bowling community is important to Carol. She and her husband Bob worked long hours, sometimes twelve hours a day, seven days a week to maintain a tradition of bowling in the Comox Valley so it is gratifying to see it continue.

Each week over 1500 patrons, from league bowlers, to youth bowlers, to Special Olympics bowlers and children’s birthday parties enjoy the traditional five-pin bowling experience.

“Everyone that bowls here is like family,” smiles Duwanee. “Not only are Rick and I here during the day working. We are here in the evening participating in leagues, bowling with our friends. This is our home and we feel lucky to be part of such a great community!”

Having the farmer’s market running year round means local farmers are able to extend their season.

One of the mandates of the farmers market is to build the connection between rural farms and urban centres.

“Part of the reason we like to come to this particular location, and why we began the Wednesday market downtown is that our clientele like to shop local,” Brown explains. “Having the market in this location creates a synergy between city and country.”

The farmer’s market is more than just promoting local food. It is about building lasting relationships across different segments of the community.

When local vendors were surveyed last summer, the majority stated that their primary reason for coming to the market was not sales, it was creating relationships with their customers.

“Those relationships are key,” says Brown. “That is why everything that is at the market is grown or produced in the Comox-Strathcona Regional District and is sold by the person who has grown or produced it.”

With live music, fresh food and hot coffee brewing, the Saturday morning market is a great place to get a taste of country without leaving the city.

The Comox Valley Farmers Market moves indoors each winter, transforming the Native Sons Hall into a communal gathering place for downtown shoppers committed to supporting local farmers and food producers.

The 2013 winter market runs October 26th to December 21st, reopening for the 2014 season on January 11th.

One of the mandates of the farmers market is to build the connection between rural farms and urban centres.

“Part of the reason we like to come to this particular location, and why we began the Wednesday market downtown is that our clientele like to shop local,” Brown explains. “Having the market in this location creates a synergy between city and country.”

The farmer’s market is more than just promoting local food. It is about building lasting relationships across different segments of the community.

When local vendors were surveyed last summer, the majority stated that their primary reason for coming to the market was not sales, it was creating relationships with their customers.

“Those relationships are key,” says Brown. “That is why everything that is at the market is grown or produced in the Comox-Strathcona Regional District and is sold by the person who has grown or produced it.”

Many downtown residents and restaurateurs are deeply committed to eating local, and are thrilled to have the market in their neighbourhood where it is easily accessible.

With live music, fresh food and hot coffee brewing, the Saturday morning market is a great place to get a taste of country without leaving the city.

o you have one of those friends who are amazing at everything? I do. My brilliant best friend Jules, artist and mother of twins, always seems to be fully equipped

She moves about the Island, toddlers in tow, like a hip mama supply train, cheerfully lugging a massive knapsack containing toys, lotions, diapers, food… breast pump, and every last bit of it environmentally friendly and thoughtfully designed. But don’t feel outdone by her shining example. I am about to reveal her secret — Podlings.

Offering ecological baby products and a range of tried and true cloth diapers, this children’s shop just off 5th St., on Fitzgerald Ave., is a touchstone for the environmentally conscious parent.

Named after a wonderful creature from the children’s movie ‘The Dark Crystal’ Podlings is a one-stop shop for new and high quality consignment children’s clothing, baby supplies,

Turnbull and Jespersen are experts in the use of cloth diapers and are proud to have over 20 different brands of reusable diapers in store. All Diapers have been tried and tested by the owners on their own children, and are ethically made, many here in Canada.

They have a great collection of tools for making baby food at home, including sustainable, reusable bowls for safe storage and litter-less

lunches. All products are made from stainless steel, glass or cotton and are BPA free.

Running with about 50% consignment, Podlings also allows parents to return gently used items for credit or cash. My friend, Jules loves being able to trade in her equipment for new items as her wee ones grow.

Buying second-hand really helps to alleviate the cost, but it is also a great way to reduce waste and recycle.

Consigners can always retrieve unsold items at the end of the contract but many are happy to have their goods donated to a worthy cause.

“Generally unsold consigned goods are donated at the end of the contract,” Jespersen explains. “We donate our items to a local community group who sends them overseas to help orphanages and missions.”

Carrying a few lines of beautiful wooden toys designed for imaginative play, Podlings is an excellent place to shop for Christmas or birthday gifts. Grandma’s and Grandpa’s can often be seen oohing and aahing over some beautiful handmade toy, such as a set of brightlycoloured nesting blocks.

(New parents will be thrilled to know that vegetable dye makes these toys safe for

baby!).

Handmade monster stuffies are nothing short of pieces of art. Gorgeous dolls made by the Vancouver Island company, ‘Sunlover Creations’ are intricately designed, with hand knit booties and colourful hair, all made with natural fibres.

Podlings also carries an array of maternity wear.

Robson and Fryfogel believe that it is important for downtown businesses to support each other, which is one of the reasons they purchase all their meat from Butcher Block next door. (Of course, the primary reason is that Butcher Block offers a high quality product that Robson and Fryfogel stand behind and feel proud to

serve their customers).

Children’s artwork lines the walls, a gallery for youngsters whose drawings of birds are both humorous and endearing; “I ordered worms,” says a colourful red and orange bird perched in his nest.

“Sorry kids. We’re too early for the early bird!” says a folksy mother bird to her three little chicks.

Every day new artwork finds a home along the back wall of the restaurant, giving children a sense of purpose when faced with a blank sheet of paper, some crayons and time to doodle while their parents visit.

The restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday so is the perfect spot for early risers looking for a fresh pot of coffee and a hearty meal.

The restaurant opens a little later on weekends- 7 a.m.

Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, and provides a wonderful Sunday brunch buffet, which has been hugely popular.

The café has had excellent reviews on foodie sites such as Urban Spoon- a social media platform popular amongst diners looking for unbiased opinions and reviews. Some of the feedback that you’ll find if you search the Early Bird Café online is: “Hit the spot. The service was awesome. Tasty food that didn’t break the bank,” says a reviewer named Karen.

These reviews proved true when I met my friend Erin for a lunch date last week.

It was mid-afternoon but we were both craving breakfast. I ordered traditional eggs benedict while Erin ordered a healthy bowl of fresh fruit salad that came with toast, hash browns and apple juice. Our waitress, Christina Petersen, was absolutely lovely. She was quick to refill my coffee and had a relaxed, easy-going manner that made us feel right at home.

My eggs were poached perfectly and served along deliciously crispy golden brown potatoes.

As Erin and I caught up on old times the restaurant began filling up with a lunch crowd. I couldn’t help but notice that many, like us were ordering breakfast.

There is just something so comforting about that first meal of the day!
