Christmas AT HIGHSTREET

The fun gets started next Saturday at shopping centre

Preparations are well underway for Highstreet Shopping Centre’s first Christmas celebrations, scheduled to start next Saturday.

The Holiday at Highstreet will take Christmas shopping and seasonal favourites such as visits with Santa Claus to a new level, according to organizers, with nearly a month’s worth of parades, light shows, live music, gift wrapping, festive holiday food and a holiday market.

“I think residents will be proud,” said Highstreet’s marketing director Tanya Curtis.

On top of it all, snow is guaranteed.

If Mother Nature doesn’t provide any, Highstreet’s eight snow machines will ensure plenty of white, fluffy stuff during the events, with no need to shovel your driveway at home.

The 600,000-sq.ft. facility will also celebrate its grand opening on Nov. 30, said Curtis. On that day, the parade starts at 5 p.m., the grand opening kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and Santa lights the tree at 6 p.m.

The 65-foot Christmas tree is stocked with 6,000 LEDs that will put on a light show, preceded by a parade at 3 and 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday from Nov. 30 until Dec. 24. Every Friday within those weeks, there will also be a Holiday Market by Spruce Collective (4 to 8 p.m.), holiday carolers singing your favourite seasonal tunes (4 to 6 p.m.), and DJ Pri spinning family-friendly holiday beats from 6 to 9 p.m.

On Saturdays, the Holiday Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at 3 p.m., festive holiday food vendors share their goods, and live entertainment will grace the main stage starting at 6 p.m.

Darren Kwiatkowsi, executive vice-president of Shape, the company which developed Highstreet, said they’re striving to create a high level of customer service. Highstreet ambassadors are roaming throughout the mall, helping visitors with directions, and more. There is also free valet parking and free gift wrapping.

“Our whole attitude is that we’re trying to be great hosts,” he said.

The West Coast Christmas Show and Marketplace takes place at Tradex, bringing together under one roof holiday gifts, fancy foods, personal services, decor ideas, festive seminars and culinary presentations by Food Network star Anna Olson. Doors are open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

All bears are donated to the Abbotsford Christmas Bureau. If tickets are purchased through the Abbotsford Food Bank, half the proceeds are donated to the food bank.

A unique connection with community Looking back on it, Cherri-Anne Williams freely admits that launching her own hair salon at the tender age of 19 was “a little overwhelming.”

“It was something I’d always wanted – I had a lot of motivation,” she says, reflecting on the establishment of Transformations Hair Design in January of 2010. “But being as young as I was, it wasn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be like.

“Going from hair school to having a hair salon, you kind of think, ‘Oh, I’m going to go and I’m going to do what I do.’ But I didn’t have a lot of business experience on my side, so that was a challenge.”

In the years since, Williams has boosted her business acumen to match her hairstyling skills, taking a variety of courses to get a handle on the complexities of the business side.

Her efforts have paid off – with the salon coming up on its fourth anniversary, Williams oversees a staff of three stylists who serve a base of about 500 clients ranging in age from two to 85.

Located at 105-34595 3rd Avenue, just north of the Sumas border crossing and across the street from the Huntingdon subdivision, Transformations Hair Design boasts a unique connection with its community. Williams herself lives in Huntingdon,

and many of her clients are from the area.

“Because I live in the neighbourhood and work in the neighbourhood, I really get to know a lot of my neighbours really well,” she says. “I see my clients when I’m walking my dog or when they drop in to say hi. Having that kind of atmosphere and relationship with our clients is something we really love.”

Williams also spearheads several charitable initiatives through her business, running food bank drives and making donations to the SPCA. “Being part of the community lets us be a part of our clients’ lives beyond just doing their hair,” she explained. “Being born and raised in Abbotsford, we feel a strong connection to the community, and being a smaller salon, we like to contribute as much as we can to the people in it.”

Williams’s efforts, both in building her business and connecting with the community, were recognized recently as she was nominated for the Eric Vanderham Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2013 Abbotsford Business Excellence Awards.

“It was very exciting – I was very surprised,” she enthused. “I’ve never been nominated for anything like this, so it was kind of a whirlwind.”

CHAMPAGNE is the king of bubbles and its price reflects its standing. This wine can be called champagne only when it hails from the Champagne region of France and is made in the méthode champenoise (called the traditional method in the rest of the world). The grapes used are restricted to Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, in any combination. If the bottle reads blanc de blancs, then it is just Chardonnay; if it reads blanc de noirs, then it is any combination of the Pinots.

CRÉMANT refers to sparkling wines made in the traditional method that are not inside the boundaries of the Champagne region.

Crémants can be made from grapes other than the traditional Champagne varieties. Watch for regional identification such as Crémant

d’Alsace, Crémant de Bourgogne or Crémant de Limoux.

CAVA is Spain’s contribution to the world of sparklers. It’s made in the traditional method (the same way champagne is made, with the second fermentation in the bottle) but typically uses indigenous grapes. Cava can be gentler on the wallet than champagne, but offers many of the same beautiful aromas, flavours, textures and food-pairing flexibility.

PROSECCO is Italy’s answer to sparkling wine, with bubbles that are often gentler than the three Cs. Prosecco is the name of the grape as well as the wine and is usually made in the Charmat method, with the second fermentation taking place in tanks.

This helps keep the price down.

SPARKLING WINE is what our local wineries call their bubbles. Backyard Vineyards in Langley and Summerhill, Haywire and Bella in the Okanagan all have great party pours, worthy of any occasion.

BRUT means dry in sparkling-wine speak.

Extra brut is dryer, but extra dry is sweeter.

Winter weather can be quite brutal if a person is outdoors without protection from the elements.

• 1/2 cup unsalted butter • 1 egg

The holiday season is all about tradition. It makes celebrations special. Once a year we unearth the decorations, the candles, the trees and the recipes from the forgotten corners of our homes. Once a year we have full licence to be tacky and decadent for a few weeks. We carry on traditions from generation to generation and start new ones with our children.

• 1/4 cup black strap molasses

DIRECTIONS

• 1 cup sugar

Sift cinnamon, ginger, baking soda, salt, and flour together.

• 1 tsp cinnamon

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs. Add the molasses.

Gradually stir in your dry sifted ingredients into the wet ingredients. Scoop out large 1 inch balls and cook for 8 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

• 2 tsps ground ginger • 1 tsp baking soda • 2 1/4 cups flour • 1/4 tsp salt

A great Christmas memory growing up for me is of our family trips to find the annual Christmas tree. The entire family would load up the suburban with a thermos of hot chocolate and head into the woods in search of the perfect tree to bring home.

Invariably there were cold feet, battles between siblings in the backseat and a snowball fight, but there was also singing and laughs and we always returned with our tree. Whenever I smell the cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger of treats baking, it brings me back to those moments.

Every season I make these soft ginger cookies for my family. I hope that when my kids are older they will catch the smell of brown sugar and molasses baking in the air and it will take them back to Christmas with me and the traditions we have as a family. It is sure great to be a dad at Christmas.
