Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade

Although this is only the third year for the parade, it has quickly grown into an event that is not to be missed! While we want as many people as possible to enjoy in the festivities, we also want encourage everyone to come prepared. Here are some suggestions you might want to consider when setting out for the evening:

If you are in the downtown area you can visit some of the businesses participating in Moonlight Madness, or warm up at the Farmer’s Market in the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

ARRIVE EARLY IF YOU WANT A GOOD SPOT It goes without saying that you will be competing with other people to get a good view of the Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Parade. Spectators will begin arriving as early as 4:30 p.m. to claim their favorite spots. And while 5 p.m. is still a good bet, by 5:30 p.m. it’ll get squishy in spots, and you will need strong shoulders because your kids are going to want to be on them to see the parade.

BE PREPARED FOR THE WAIT In addition to waiting for the parade to start, there can be long waits between the floats. The best thing for parents to do is to arm themselves with stuff to keep their kids amused (colouring books, games, snacks, etc).

In November the weather in Lacombe is unpredictable. The weather on the day of the parade has generally been snowy, but it could just as easily be warm and comfortable. However, cold weather will be a misery if you’re not dressed properly, so layers are recommended.

HAVE A PLAN WITH YOUR KIDS IN CASE YOU GET SEPARATED Having a plan in place is the best way to prevent a potentially bad situation. With spectators crowded along the parade route, getting lost is a real possibility for kids. Talk to children about what to do if they get lost. Have a go-to spot picked out beforehand. Make sure younger kids know their last con’t

names, their parents’ or guardians’ names and cell phone numbers, or write the information on a piece of paper and stick it in their pockets. We always tell our kids to go to a policeman on duty immediately or a mom with kids who is sure to be sympathetic.

PACK A KNAPSACK Don’t head out the door empty-handed. The parade itself isn’t incredibly long but you can expect to be

out in the open air for much longer - especially if you stick around for many of the activities happening afterwards. Handy items to pack along include a blanket or chairs to hold your spot; rain ponchos; tissues for cold, runny noses; extra sweaters; mittens, hats and scarves. CIBC will be handing out hot chocolate during the parade to warm up the spectators. As for food, the Scouts will once again be offering chiliand-a-bun outside the LMC, and Anna Maria’s Café will be open late.

Wishing you Warmth & Happiness this Holiday Season! See it? No payments for 6 months on new units! OAC

What’s up with Santa? Santa Claus is a pretty busy guy. When he isn’t making toys or checking his list, he is performing quality control checks on the milk and cookies, or working out the reindeer. Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC) Lights Display So what’s it take to build a community lights display that is truly awe-inspiring? After the seeing the amazing transformation that has taken place at the LMC over the last two years, we think we now know. “Many residents had commented that the existing lights display could be significantly improved to better exemplify our community’s holiday spirit,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “I don’t think we had a really good sense of how this was all going to come together,” said Christie. “There was a rough vision, but we know that it was going to be a very big job.” One thing was for sure; we needed more lights – many more lights! Partnerships were struck up with Fortis Alberta, Enhance Energy, Sunny 94, Speedy Glass and AFSC. And this year Viking Projects and Shaw stepped up to support the initiative. So there was an abundant supply of lights – over 40,000! But

hanging them was an equally monumental task. “When you hang lights on your own house it takes an afternoon,” said Guy Lapointe, Community and Economic Development Manager. “Try scaling 40-foot trees; we didn’t know where to start!” Fortunately the answer came from the community once again. The Lacombe Fire Department, Fortis Alberta, Wolf Creek School Division

and Phase 3 Security all pitched in to provide labour and equipment. “It was the whole collaborative effort that made this dream into a reality, and it’s only going to continue to grow and get better,” said Lapointe. He encourages everyone to come down to lights ceremony again this year. “We have added more lights, and a centerpiece that families will not want to miss.” Ho-ho-hope to see you there.

World Record Attempt World’s Largest Christmas Tree

Have you ever wanted to leave your mark on the biggest stage possible? Here is your chance. Join in the fun and help Lacombe break the record for the World’s Largest Human Christmas Tree! The current record was set by a group of 672 participants on December 8, 2011, in Dusseldorf, Germany. The record-breaking attempt will be held at the ME Global Athletic Park just prior to the Lumenight festivities at Cranna Lake. “It’s not as simple as you would think,” explains Community and Economic Development Manager Guy Lapointe. “Guinness has some very particular rules that need to be followed for the attempt to be con-

sidered successful.” These rules outline how the tree is to be organized, how people are counted, and even how the event is recorded. To ensure that we abided by the rules, ME Global was selected as the site for the attempt. The event will also be a good opportunity to introduce first-timers to this top-notch sports facility. According to Mayor Steve Christie, there is more to this attempt then simply breaking a record. “This is really about community building,” says Mayor Christie. “People are coming out to have some holiday fun, meet their neighbours and working together to accomplish

something really unique. That to me demonstrates very clearly that we are stronger when we work together.” The City of Lacombe wants local charities to benefit from Light Up the Night Festival, and has chosen to partner with the Caring for Children Fund during this event. Donations to this record-breaking attempt will be used to provide medical, dental and optical treatment for children of families facing financial hardship. So when you come down to be a part of the festive fun, please be sure to make a contribution to the Caring for Children Fund, so that it can continue the great work it does within our community.

Wishing you a Safe & Happy Holiday Season!

Admission to the Faire is simply a food or monetary donation, with all proceeds going to the Lacombe Food Bank.
