A capacity crowd packed the Mission Leisure Centre Saturday for the official torch-lighting ceremony for the B.C. Winter Games.

During the ceremony, Mission Mayor Ted Adlem noted that Abbotsford has provided sports facilities for some of the events.

Archery will be held at the AgRec Building; speed skating at Abbotsford Recreation Centre; ringette at Matsqui Recreation Centre; and basketball, Special Olympics at UFV. A loud cheer and applause erupted in the north arena as former Olympic speed skater and Mission resident Eden DonatelliGreen and Abbotsford-Mission MLA Simon Gibson lit the cauldron from a torch carried in by Green.

Adlem addressed the crowd, stating he could feel the growing sense of excitement in the community.

“This will be a tremendous opportunity to watch extraordinary young athletes,” he said. “The provincial spotlight will be on Mission.

These Games will leave our community with a sports legacy.

“We’ll show the province the best there is to be had.”

Mission Winter Games president Brian Antonson spoke about the impact the event will have on the district, including the attention of the province and the economic factor.

Police hunting poppy theft suspect Woman poses as legion volunteer to make off with donation boxes Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Police have received “valuable information” about the identity of a woman accused of stealing up to $3,000 in funds from the recent Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaign in Abbotsford, according to Const. Ian MacDonald.

“Certainly, we feel that an arrest is in the very near future,” he said on Monday.

A photo of the suspect obtained from video footage of one of the targeted businesses has been circulated on social media and through news outlets since late last week, leading to several tips to police.

first discovered the thefts last Tuesday, when volunteer drivers who arrived at local businesses to pick up poppy donation boxes were told the containers had already been collected.

The white plastic boxes contain poppies sold in recognition of Remembrance Day and include an area for donations to be deposited. They were placed at businesses throughout the city, starting on Oct. 25.

Three legion volunteers began their pick-ups last Tuesday – the day after Remembrance Day – and discovered that five businesses had been hit over the weekend.

Geoff Hosking, acting president of the Abbotsford legion, said the donations collected would

By Thursday, the legion determined that another five boxes were missing, for a total of 10. The thefts occurred mainly along McCallum Road and

have amounted to between $2,000 and $3,000. Last year, the campaign raised approximately $47,000 in Abbotsford.

Hosking said members were hurt by the theft.

“That money goes to a good cause … It’s like stealing from a church.

What kind of people are these?” he said.

MacDonald said police are continuing to investigate the thefts and gather information.

Meanwhile, the thefts of three poppy donation boxes, also involving a female suspect, are being investigated in Mission.

Hosking said the Abbotsford legion will review its procedures for the future handling of its poppy donation boxes, perhaps requiring all vol-

unteers to carry photo ID identifying them as legion representatives.

Funds raised from the poppy campaign go into a fund to support veterans with costs such as hearing aids and eyeglasses. The fund also provide bursaries for their family members and helps support local army and air cadets.

The money raised in Abbotsford stays in the community.

Anyone with information about the thefts is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-8595225.

Matthew’s House: Opening of a dream Respite facility ready to welcome first guest Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Doug and Andrea Froese of Abbotsford first met with representatives of Communitas Supportive Care Society in 2007 to discuss their dream of building a respite facility for children with severe disabilities.

They were inspired by their son Matthew, then six years old, and the challenges they often faced as a family in meeting all his needs.

Matthew passed away in August 2010 at the age of nine, but Thursday marked the grand opening of Matthew’s House as part of the Campus of Care project on Marshall Road next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

“I never would have believed that Matthew wouldn’t have had a chance to stay here (in Matthew’s House) … but his time was up here,” Andrea said tearfully in her speech at the opening celebration.

“This is the house that Matthew built.”

Doug thanked everyone involved in the project over the years.

“We are very excited to celebrate the opening of Matthew’s House, and we know it will be a blessing to the community and the families it serves.”

Matthew’s House, which is facilitated

by Communitas Supportive Care Society, will provide a “home away from home” for children like Matthew from the ages of four to 18 who live with complex health care needs.

Up to five children at a time can stay at the home-like facility for anywhere from two days to two weeks. Staff will include residential support workers and licensed practical nurses, supervised by a registered nurse.

Two family suites enable parents to stay temporarily while their child makes the transition to a stay without them.

The 4,000-sq.ft. home will welcome its first guest on Nov. 25.

Matthew’s House is the first of the Campus of Care partners to open. The project also includes Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Holmberg House, an adult hospice operated by the Abbotsford Hospice Society.

Dignitaries attending the opening included Mayor Bruce Banman, and MLAs Darryl Plecas and Simon Gibson.

The public is invited to Matthew’s House for an open house on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 1 to 5 p.m. The event will include tours, refreshments and draw prizes.

The City of Abbotsford may gain as much as $1.3 million annually in tax revenue with an expansion of Kinder Morgan’s oil pipeline.

Company president Ian Anderson presented the projected economic benefits of the Trans Mountain pipeline twinning to the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

Anderson is speaking to major communities along the pipeline route all month long as the company prepares its project application for submission to the National Energy Board in December 2013.

Abbotsford would be one of a handful of “hubs” along the Edmonton to Burnaby pipeline route if the $5.4 billion expansion project receives NEB approval, according to Anderson.

That would include an increase to city revenue.

will pay $2,065,000 in municipal property taxes to Abbotsford in 2013. Anderson said that would increase to $3,368,000 with a pipeline expansion.

At the peak of construction in the city from May 2016 to March 2017, there would be at least 275 workers based here.

Kinder Morgan estimates these workers would spend $17 million in the community, which includes $6.9 million on accommodation and $3.7 million on meals.

Province-wide, the company is expecting to create up to 4,500 temporary jobs during the 18-month construction period of May 2016 to Nov. 2017. The range of positions would include logging and clearing operators, welders, truck drivers, and general labourers.

The company is also encouraging potential local vendors and suppliers to pre-register online at transmountain.

The Trans Mountain expansion project seeks to build a second Kinder Morgan oil pipeline adjacent the existing one in order to increase carrying capacity from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000.

The existing line in Abbotsford stretches from Sumas Mountain to the neighbourhoods of Clayburn, Matsqui, and Bradner-Mt. Lehman. The company also operates a pump station on the mountain.

The proposal to twin the line has faced criticism, primarily for potential environmental impacts. In 2012, the Sumas pump station spilled 110,000 litres of oil on the mountain.

The company spilled 20 to 25 barrels of oil on the Trans Mountain line near Hope this past June.

about the safety, environmental, and financial implications of the project.

A common critique of the project is that there have been too few public consultations by the company. There are currently no further public consultations scheduled in Abbotsford.

However, company spokesperson Lisa Clement said that more will be held in late winter or early spring when Kinder Morgan prepares additional sub-applications required by NEB. “We’re definitely not going away.

Consultation is not done, or closed, or completed, even when we file (the project application to NEB in December 2013). Once we file, our consultation continues,” said Clement.

The NEB, on its part, is holding online forums about Kinder Morgan’s application process for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Homeless housing debated Business association remains opposed to facility in downtown Alina KONEVSKI Abbotsford News

Despite listening to an evening of arguments for a supportive recovery home in downtown Abbotsford, nearby businesses still seem set against it.

Community housing groups joined the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) for a panel discussion on housing for the homeless at the University of the Fraser Valley Friday evening.

The discussion centered on Abbotsford Community Service’s proposal to rezone land in the downtown in order to open a 20-bed low-barrier housing complex. Social service groups argued the proposed 2408 Montvue Ave. location makes the most sense because it would be beside the ACS headquarters.

The ADBA countered that this location would violate an existing commitment by the City of Abbotsford to reserve the downtown strip for businesses. ADBA representatives made it clear that the value of the project is beside the point.

What mattered was retaining the C7 zoning for the downtown, which disqualifies not only supportive recovery homes, but also other establishments such as tattoo parlours, churches and pool halls.

“This is no ordinary rezoning application. By rezoning this property, the mayor and council must go back on their word to the 200 small businesses in the C7 zone,” said ADBA president

Paul MacLeod. “What kind of a message are we sending to developers and investors if they can’t trust the word of our city council?”

When asked by an audience member what evidence the ADBA had that the home would negatively impact businesses, McLeod returned to the value of retaining the C7 zone as is. He added

ADBA president Paul MacLeod that the downtown is already saturated with services for marginalized people by having 12 such facilities, including the ACS. There is a possible Plan B location for the housing complex, at Gladys Avenue and Pine Street. However, because this would be farther removed from ACS headquarters, ACS would need to hire additional staff to manage it. That would add approximately $150,000 in operating costs for each of the 60 years for which ACS and BC Housing have committed to the project. BC Housing believes that

the alternate location would also invite opposition because of its proximity to a school and to the downtown.

At Friday’s panel discussion, several people tried to allay fears about potential negative impacts on neighbouring businesses before an audience of about 200.

BC Housing’s regional director Naomi Brunemeyer said the project is low-risk and would have a wealth of security features, including cameras and keyless entry.

ACS confirmed that the tenant selection committee would carefully screen each of the 20 potential residents.

Panelists affiliated with the Abbotsford Christian Leaders Network (ACLN) shared their experiences of visiting similar housing developments in New Westminster, Chilliwack, and other communities.

BC Housing has already allocated $2.4 million in capital funding for the project, plus $215,000 in annual operating costs. Abbotsford-South MLA and the event’s keynote speaker, Darryl Plecas, encouraged the community not to pass up a rare opportunity.

Time to rally for hospice

Doug and Andrea Froese of Abbotsford had a dream of building a home to help families going through the same challenges they faced as the parents of a child with severe disabilities.

They wanted to provide a break for these mothers and fathers, who face the stress of providing loving 24/7 care for their children. But they also wanted a place where kids could have a safe and nurturing “home away from home” experience under the care of medical professionals.

They wanted to name it Matthew’s House in honour of their son.

Last Thursday, the Froeses were on hand for the grand opening of the centre, which is part of the Campus of Care project on Marshall Road adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Sadly, Matthew passed away in August 2010 at the age of nine, but his spirit was strong at the celebration.

Doug and Andrea remarked on the

community support that helped bring their vision to fruition. This included financial contributors, construction partners, and others.

Without them, Matthew’s House could not have been built, they observed.

As Matthew’s House prepares to welcome its first guest, the two other Campus of Care projects are still under construction.

Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is set to open early in the new year – but the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s Holmberg House reported last week that it has faced a slowdown in funding.

About another $3.7 million is required to complete construction of the facility, which will provide a home-like environment for adults who are dying, as well as support services for their families.

Other Hand The current “modernization” of the liquor laws in British Columbia is taking up a lot of media space, government activity and cocktail party chatter these days.

Will the new boozy look come to local grocery stores? Will private liquor retailers set their hair on fire while burning Christy Clark in effigy? Will our society collapse in a heap of alcohol-sodden shoppers?

Except for perhaps the actions of private retailers, nothing much will change if alcohol is sold in grocery stores.

You very likely will not see the price of booze drop, and other than the convenience of chucking a bottle of wine or a box of beer into the shopping cart along with potatoes and carrots, there will be little difference. In most urban settings there are private or government liquor

stores conveniently located in most shopping centres, and in rural communities, Yarrow for one on the eastern edge of Sumas Prairie, you can buy alcoholic beverages in convenience shops and gas stations.

The biggest assumption from those advocating grocery store distribution is that along with the convenience, the price of booze will drop.

You’d also have to assume, given all the potential outlets, that huge volumes of bulk buying would similarly drive down the cost of a six-pack.

Such, however, will not be the case because, believe it or not, the BC Liquor Distribution Branch is one of the world’s largest bulk buyers of alcoholic beverages – you read that right, in the whole world!

BCLDB, along with the Ontario government’s liquor branch, buys more booze in bulk than almost anywhere else, so wouldn’t you think that like other bulk buyers (Walmart comes to mind) the more you buy, the lower the price which in turn is passed on to the consumer?

Except in B.C., of course, where a bottle of hooch is more costly than almost anywhere else – well, at least more than the

same product costs in Alberta.

Wouldn’t it be nice as part of the modernization process that the lowering of retail pricing was considered? Of course, the Nervous Nellies who believe lower prices and easier access will result in rampant alcoholism, would never stand for that.

Believe it or not, the BC Liquor Distribution Branch is one of the world’s largest bulk buyers of alcoholic beverages...

Yet if one is a little creative, and regardless of your age, the potential for cheap alcohol and convenient access is already stocked on grocery shelves throughout the province, so long as you’re not in a major hurry for an alcoholic hit.

Almost every store carries wine- and beer-making kits … just add yeast and water, wait a few days or weeks and you’ve got enough swill to last the winter.

Many years ago I tried that … still have

all the carboys and stuff buried in the basement. Even eschewed the kits, making wine from scratch: Japanese plums, blackberries and, in one massive failure, from beets grown in the garden.

That latter effort produced a red wine the colour of which was the envy of the finest burgundy. Unfortunately, following directions, I added to the mix the water in which I boiled the beets. In a few weeks I had 15 gallons of beautiful, alcohol-laden, wine that tasted like dirt!

Not one to waste – thanks to the high alcohol content, the flavor could be ignored after the first glass – my carboys were eventually emptied.

Lesson learned was that wine is best acquired from a store shelf, and unless you wish your home to take on the aroma of a brewery, the same applies to beer. The home-making of whisky out of wheat or vodka out of potatoes hold a similar lack of appeal.

Bottom line, it doesn’t matter if alcohol is available in grocery stores because it’s already accessible almost everywhere.

It is the pricing that matters, and I can almost guarantee that won’t change. markrushton@abbynews.com

ficulty affording it. Local religious collection plates are overbrimming with contributors in our area. This is the “Bible Belt” after all (as I’ve heard proudly from thousands I’ve met since arriving).

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be parading through the downtown core on a classic 1967 fire truck starting at 2 p.m., which is an hour earlier than last year, said Tina Stewart, ADBA spokesperson.

This year’s stage sponsor is Aldergrove Credit Union, and live entertainment will be running on the main stage from 1 to 5 p.m.

Santa will be handing out candy canes, alongside the Royal Canadian Legion and the Salvation Army, which will be giving away hot chocolate and cookies.

Due to the positive response last year to the free-to-make craft booths for kids, the number of spots has expanded to five, said Stewart.

Second pepper spray incident within a week

Pepper spray was released in the halls of Abbotsford Senior Secondary School on Thursday for the second time in one week.

On Nov. 7, a 17-year-old student allegedly released pepper spray in the atrium of Abbotsford Senior Secondary School. The student has been charged with mischief, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and assault with a weapon.

On Thursday, Nov. 14, shortly before noon, pepper spray was once again released in a common area of the school.

Dave Stephen, communications manager for the school district, said the school was put into “soft lockdown” while students were kept out of the area where the spray had been released and the school’s emergency fan system was turned on.

Police, ambulance and fire services were called. No students required medical treatment and police are investigating.

Stephen said the two incidents at Abbotsford Senior are a great concern and “troublesome for all the schools.”

He said administration is currently viewing it as a copycat incident, and is continuing to investigate.

Const. Paul Walker said the school is co-operating with the investigation and if a suspect is identified they could face charges. Walker said because no one was injured, charges would likely be for mischief.

After the Nov. 7 incident, a handful of students had asthmatic reactions after the stu-

dent released the pepper spray during the lunch break. One student was taken to hospital for decontamination, but no students sustained any injuries.

The school contacted Abbotsford Police and ambulance, and the suspect was arrested. In addition to facing charges, the student has been suspended and will go to the district’s board of review within weeks to discuss the potential for further disciplinary action.

A notice is being sent out to parents of students at Abbotsford Senior, notifying them of what occurred.

The Abbotsford Police Department’s traffic and patrol units issued suspensions last Thursday to 11 impaired drivers.

Const. Paul Walker said the vehicle stops occurred throughout the day and evening, and officers came in contact with drivers at different levels of intoxication.

The drivers were all issued suspensions of three, seven or 90 days

under the immediate roadside prohibition program.

Walker said police are reminding drivers to make responsible choices throughout the year.

An Abbotsford man has pleaded guilty to five of the 14 charges he was facing under the B.C. Securities Act for offences in Abbotsford, Vancouver and White Rock in 2011.

Gregory Clark Carrington, 67, was sentenced to a 90-day jail term on Tuesday in Abbotsford provincial court for unlawfully acting as an adviser, distributing securities without a prospectus filed, listing and posting securities for trading, misrepresentation, and contravention of the Securities Act. The other nine charges were stayed.

A University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) student will head to Asia this week on a 13-day trade mission led by Premier Christy Clark and Teresa Wat, B.C.’s international trade minister.

Theresa Coates, who is studying business and economics at UFV, was recommended by UFV president Mark Evered after Abbotsford West MLA and Minister of Finance Michael de Jong requested a business student to accompany the trade mission.

The delegation leaves for China, Korea and Japan on Nov. 21.

Evered said Coates is an outstanding student who has “laddered a trade certificate into a UFV business degree,” describing her as “talented, ambitious, conscientious and mature, a very good communicator.”

The Abbotsford Arts Council has announced that Abbotsford artist Bev Beresh is the winner of its first Christmas Card Design Contest.

Beresh’s creation is an oil painting on canvas titled “Santa’s Gift,” pictured at right.

She received a $200 gift card from Opus Art Supplies as her prize.

The arts council announced a call in August for artwork from Fraser Valley artists to be displayed on the front of the organization’s 2013 Christmas

The most common worry he heard was that people thought they would be stripsearched.

Beyond that, Nisi said many are unaware of what they are permitted to bring back across the line duty-free.

Especially with dairy, people often bring too much – travellers are limited to $20 per day.

Nisi’s book dispels myths and beliefs about crossing, and details the rules and regulations about the identification needed, and more.

Nisi, who also served in the Canadian Forces, as well as volunteering with Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue for seven years, has just released a second e-book entitled Trail Ready: How to Pack and Prepare for Hiking Emergencies. “I’ve done a lot of stuff outdoors and I’m constantly seeing people unprepared,� he said. Nisi has come across people in areas with no cellphone reception who are armed with only a bottle of water.

The 38-page book is a fast guide on what to do if you become lost, the 10 essentials to pack on any hike, how to use a signal mirror, etc.

Nisi is planning future e-books, including one about incidents he has responded to while a paramedic.

Al Tuchscherer’s biggest challenge on the weekend was keeping his University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team mentally invested for the entirety of their twogame series vs. the Mount Royal Cougars.

That’s not to say head coach Tuchscherer was uniformly happy. On Saturday, he pointed to his team’s 24 turnovers and the fact that they were outscored 15-11 in the fourth quarter as signs they weren’t as mentally sharp as they might have been.

“You’d like to think they’ll go out and just play hard for 40 minutes every night, but unfortunately human nature is to look at the scoreboard and see what’s going on,” he noted.

“You’ve got to be able to fight through that kind of stuff. It’s the challenge we issued them, and I thought for three quarters we did a decent job, and then in the fourth quarter, not so good.”

If it sounds like Tuchscherer is nitpicking, it’s because he knows his team needs to be firing on all cylinders this week, when they hit the road to face two elite programs – the No. 5 Alberta Pandas on Friday, and the No. 4 Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday.

As if the games themselves aren’t tough enough, the Cascades have to endure a sixhour overnight bus trip from Edmonton to Saskatoon in the middle.

“It’ll for sure be the biggest test we’ve had this season,” Tuchscherer said.

Q The weekend was a valuable learning experience for the Cascades men’s squad, who showed vast improvement in crunch time from one night to the next.

On Friday, UFV led Mount Royal by four points with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter, but struggled mightily down the stretch en route to a 62-60 defeat.

The Abbotsford Heat finally cooled off, but not before setting a new franchise record for consecutive regular season wins.

The local American Hockey League club won its first two games of a seven-game road trip last week to stretch their win streak to nine, before finally succumbing to the Oklahoma City Barons on Saturday.

The two victories were highlighted by back-to-back hat tricks.

On Wednesday vs. the Texas Stars, Blair Jones exploded for three goals and two assists to spark a 7-3 win. Goalie Joni Ortio was also outstanding, making 45 saves.

On Friday, it was Ben Street’s turn to ignite the offence – his threegoal performance paced the Heat to a 5-4 comeback win in Oklahoma City, and Ortio improved to 7-0 on the season with a 24-save outing.

The game was notable because it marked the goalie Ilya Bryzgalov’s debut with the Barons.

Considered one of the NHL’s elite netminders as recently as the 2010-11 season, the quirky 33-year-old Russian fell upon hard times after departing the Phoenix Coyotes to sign a nine-year, $51 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 2011.

This past June, after two subpar seasons, the Flyers bought out the remaining seven years of his contract.

The struggling Edmonton Oilers rolled the dice on Bryzgalov last week, signing him to a one-year contract and sending him to the Barons for a conditioning stint.

He didn’t sparkle statistically in his debut – Street and the Heat got to him for five goals on just 24 shots, which works out to a .792 save percentage.

“It’s fun when you’re playing a world-class goalie,” said Street, who racked up seven goals and five assists during a five-game point streak.

“It was pretty cool – obviously he’s in the media a lot, and a lot of coverage lately.

“We didn’t really

know what to expect from him coming in . . . It’s always a good test for our guys when you’re playing a goalie of an NHL calibre.”

“He’s powerful enough to run anyway, and they were slipping and sliding trying to get him,” Hawks coach Denis Kelly noted.

“It was just terrible rainfall . . . hours and hours of rain. It was probably worse for them than us, because they have a strong passing game and they were having trouble executing. They just couldn’t stop us – we were running basically at will on them.”

Slater McRae and Jacob Dodd also notched rushing majors for Mouat, while quarterback Hunter Struthers went 5-for5 for 106 yards with a 50-yard scoring pass to tight end Jake Firlotte.

GRAHAM, Agnes (Nan) With sadness and loss, we announce the passing of our mother at her home on Thursday, November 7, 2013. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Donald C. Graham, and her two younger brothers, Ian and Noel McArthur. As a career nurse and former veteran and member of the WRAF, her caring nurturing attributes exemplified the spirit of a true nightingale. “Nan” as she was affectionately known is survived by her son, David (Campbell) Graham, daughter and primary caregiver, June Linton, grandsons, Mark Linton, James Graham and Christopher Graham, along with great-grandsons, Benjamin and Nathaniel Graham. A special word of appreciation and gratitude to June for her selfless care in providing care, allowing mom to pass her last days in the comfort of home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Royal Canadian Legion would be appreciated.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford.

Born March 27, 1939 in the Ukraine, passed away into the presence of her Lord November 8, 2013. She was predeceased by her parents John and Maria, her brother John and infant brother Henry.

Anthony Christopher ‘Paddy’ Ryan, born December 18, 1930 in Dublin, Ireland passed away peacefully on November 14, 2013. He will be dearly missed by his children Julia, Susan (Alexander), Dano, and Tara (Alan); grandchildren Tara, Megan, Nolan and his mother Barbara; sister Lillie (Ted), as well as extended family and friends in both Canada and the United Kingdom. Anthony was predeceased by his wife Phyllis in March 2007. Anthony served in the Royal Ulster Rifles before immigrating to Canada and joining the Canadian Army in 1954. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served on numerous peacekeeping missions, including the Middle East and Cyprus. After retiring from the military he worked for another 10 years at Corrections Canada. A sincere thank you from the family is extended to Dad’s good friends, Bill Selig and Ralph Davis, for their help and support during his illness and to his fellow parishioners at St. Joseph’s who visited him so often while in hospital. A special thank you to the nursing staff at the Mission Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care and support. A viewing will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home, 7386 Horne Street, Mission BC. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Parish, 32550 - 7th Ave on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Food Bank.

TENNANT Bruce David SMITH Gilbert William Born April 13, 1925 in Lunenburg, NS. He passed away peacefully November 7, 2013.

Gilbert will be sadly missed by wife Marion, daughters Lynne Smith and Judy (Glenn) Gadicke and grandsons Jason & Tyler. Also mourning the loss will be many family and friends in Nova Scotia. Gilbert spent many years on the east coast in both Lunenburg and Halifax. Marrying in 1957, he and Marion moved to BC in 1958. They lived in Victoria for 12 years before settling in Abbotsford in 1971. Gilbert enjoyed travelling having worked on the east coast sailing from Halifax to Jamaica in his younger years. Travelling back and forth across Canada numerous times to visit family and friends. They also had adventures to Europe and Asia in their retirement years. The family is grateful for the care received at ARH Cheam 3 and at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission.

A private family service will be held in the coming week with final internment at Musslewhite Cemetery.

It is with great sadness that we announce Bruce’s passing after 61 years of life. Bruce worked at CP Railway for 36 years before retiring in 2009.

He was well known in Mission, having worked the West Coast Express as a Conductor for many years prior to his retirement. He had many interests including fishing, camping and karate. Bruce earned a third degree black belt in the Isshin Ryu style of karate at the Mission Isshin Ryu Karate Club. After retirement, Bruce suffered from a number of health issues that culminated in his passing on November 14th in the Abbotsford Hospital with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife Lucienne, his daughter Dael, his son Alex (Rea), his grandchildren, Dairien and Lachlan, Tyson, Jaxson and Maxximus, his brother Paul, his sisters Barb and Suzy, his nieces and nephews; and his extended family Pat, Barb, Doug, Mike and Stewart, as well as his many friends. He was predeceased by his mother Betty and father Walt. A celebration of Bruce’s life will be held at the Woodlawn Mission Funeral Chapel, 7386 Horne Street, Mission, BC at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 22nd. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations in Bruce’s memory be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Lovingly remembered by her loving husband Lawrence; children Janette Moran Carol Vadnais (Thomas), (Roger Sandahl), Richard Vadnais (Teresa Kruse), Barbara Mansel (Stuart), Brian Vadnais (Jacqueline) and Gary Vadnais; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; sisters Mary Clare and Peggy Heartwig; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by mother Harriet Stein; father Daniel Stein; her sisters Rita Hiebert and Nancy Dean. A Celebration of Life will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home, 7386 Horne Street, Mission BC on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 11 am.

He will be missed by his children Karin (Darrell) Valair, Lorne (Brenda) Witala, Myrna Lardeur and Deborah (Antoni) Witala - Michaud, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Arvid was a World War II Veteran and served overseas. As a young adult he played organized hockey; was a hunter, fisherman, golfer, and curler.

Arvid was a salesman for Kelly Douglas until his retirement.

The family would like to thank MSA MANOR in Abbotsford for the loving care you gave Dad while he was with you. He loved and enjoyed you all. A family memorial will be held at a later date.
