Missing woman last seen in Quesnel

The Quesnel RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing female who may be traveling to Kamloops. Susan Jane Durham, 59, was last seen in Quesnel Nov. 9, at 8 a.m.

Family and friends are concerned for her well-being after she left her hotel room without her medication or personal property. Durham is believed to be driving a white 1999 Ford Explorer with BC plate 510 LSM. Durham is described as; • Caucasian • 5’6 inches • 66 lbs • Red hair • Blue eyes The RCMP is asking anyone who may have seen this vehicle or Durham, to contact their local police or the Quesnel RCMP 250-9929211.

A Public Hearing on the proposed bylaw is scheduled for November 25th 2013 commencing at 6:30 p.m. at City Council Chambers, City Hall.

The Ministry of Education has worked with the Association of School Transportation Services of B.C. to procure school buses using the standing offer pricing model.

Contractors, independent schools and First Nations schools are also able to take advantage of this pricing, which has resulted in savings of 10 to 15 per cent each year and saves districts significant administrative and staff time.

The new bus for School District 28 will be delivered next spring.

In total, the provincial government is providing $11 million to 31 school districts to purchase 96 buses.

The City’s Streets and Traffic Bylaws require all downtown businesses and property owners to remove the ice and snow from the sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their premises PRIOR to 10:00 a.m. on each business day (Monday to Saturday inclusive).

This applies to all businesses regardless of their individual operating hours or days. The City will inspect the sidewalks to determine that sufficient cleaning has been completed. If it is determined that more attention is required, the City will attend to the matter. It’s incredible how things grow. I had planned on a particular budget but had to throw it out the window. We ended up recording at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo along with members of the Vancouver Island Symphony. It has just become a really wonderful lush soundscape for these incredible Christmas songs, all arranged by local musicians.”

This recording comes on the heels of his successful Showtime, Keep Holding On, Believe and O’Night Divine, the kind of music that wraps you with hope like a warm blanket, music to be enjoyed by the fire on a winter’s night.

“We are looking forward to being in the North again, to the warm northern hospitality where the home fires are burning,” Ken said as the interview drew to a close.

Wreath sales to aid CHAAPS

Moose Meadows Farm is partnering with a local charity and providing a fundraising wreath for CHAAPS this year. The wreath is called “Country Christmas” and is comprised of a mix of fresh, natural subalpine fir and western red cedar boughs.

It is decorated with a large red all weather bow, a mix of pine clusters, 3 Norway spruce cones, red berries, a wooden horse, dog and horseshoe.

CHAAPS is a local charity which offers therapeutic riding programs based at PenY-Bryn Farm in Kersley and also dog visiting at Dunrovin and dog literacy programs at local schools. Profits from the sale of the wreath will go to support these programs.

The wreath costs $46 including tax and can be ordered directly online from Moose Meadows Farm www.moosemeadowsfarm. ca or from Meriel Wild at 250-747-0114. Wreaths can also be shipped anywhere in North America for an added fee which varies according to destination.

Our evolving identity D

o you remember the Canadians don’t have a national identity issue of some years ago?

Did we ever figure it out?

I suggest that we have an incredible multicultural national identity, which constantly evolves as new cultures bring elements to it.

I am an immigrant, a New Canadian. I became a citizen of this amazing country in 2004.

When I came to B.C. from Alaska in 1982 I didn’t consider myself to be an immigrant. Weren’t immigrants people who came from other continents or third-world countries?

I mean, hey, I came from Alaska; it’s practically part of Canada.

We dress the same, talk the same, have the same seasons.

One can stand simultaneously in both countries at any point along the border if one is so inclined; how could we be different?

I heard grumblings about Americans from various people from the moment I arrived, but I didn’t really pay attention to them. Over the years I began to see what Canadians were talking about. I began to see that I was, indeed, immersed in a different culture.

I WAS an immigrant. I accepted this and adjusted where I needed to and began to take on the culture of Canada.

I had always considered

myself to be an open-minded, progressive person, accepting of people no matter where they come from. Then, in 2010 while pursuing ESL teaching certification, I took a course on intercultural communication.

This truly expanded my horizons. I learned about ethnocentrism (judging other cultures by our values and practices), I learned about common humanity and I came to appreciate diversity.

Knowledge is a powerful tool.

As I explored my own values alongside those of other cultures, I began to question just how open-minded I was. I began to make further adjustments.

At the time I began taking the course, I had a very strong view about what it meant to emigrate to another country.

I believed that immigrants had an obligation to take on the language and culture of the country they chose to emigrate to. It was a consequence of choice. This never meant that immigrants shouldn’t or couldn’t celebrate their own cultural heritage, but rather that in day-to-day dealings, things should be done the “Canadian way”.

(Easy for me to say; I came from Alaska and grew up speaking English.)

My view toward immigration changed quite a bit as I began to explore the whole intercultural realm.

I now believe that immigrants are obligated to

How does anyone in this region think we can move forward on anything if we don’t engage in the process?

It has nothing to do with voting yes, or voting no. Or whether you think we need a new arena, a new theatre, a new high school, better roads, a by-pass, a new museum, Phase III of the college, if we need to diversify, if we need to think bio, if we need to tighten the purse strings, or increase taxes so that our children are not left with failing infrastructure and burgeoning debt.

I mean sure all those things deserve great consideration, discussing, debate and planning – but none of it matters if we don’t show up and engage in the decision making process.

None of it.

What’s your reasoning for not showing up to the advance polls?

For failing to mail in a ballot? For not popping into one of the six locations Saturday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.?

Too busy? You don’t have children in sports? You don’t have children in the arts? You don’t plan on utilizing the space?

Or is it because you just don’t care?

Because that’s what it boils down to – you simply cannot be bothered.

There are so many wonderful things about this community.

And one of them is the amazing volunteers and community leaders willing to sacrifice their time for the betterment of the citizens of the Cariboo.

And guess what?

They’re tired of carrying y’all who can’t even be bothered to draw an X on a tiny piece of paper.

For all of you who voted in the referendum, thank you.

For those of you who didn’t, this community is working for you, the least you could have done is show up.

Time to change the channel

was lazy last weekend.

I didn’t plan to be and I didn’t schedule for it.

In fact, I had every intention of getting a bunch of things done and I also arranged to meet some friends at an anniversary party.

But when the weekend arrived, I didn’t want to do anything or go anywhere.

“You’ve been working too hard, time to change the channel” my husband said.

“You’ve burned yourself out.”

It’s true. I have. I’ve also been under a tremendous amount of pressure professionally and personally.

All I wanted to do was lay low and recoup.

I watched television, read magazines and ate too much junk food. I also slept.

Much more than usual.

Aside from the bad eating, my reaction to the stress wasn’t typical and I felt like I should be doing things differently.

Maybe talking things out, or writing things out, or at least sweating them out in the gym. But I didn’t do any of that.

On A Brighter Note ended, I woke up with the realization that I was right on deadline: I had to write this column immediately.

It wasn’t Monday morning like it seemed. Since it had been a long weekend, it was actually Tuesday. I felt like I’d lost a day in my negative haze.

There would be no more laying on the couch watching other people’s work or lying on the bed reading about other people’s lives.

I would have to sit in an upright position at my desk and try to conjure up something interesting to write about in my completely uninterested state of being.

Yet again I was reminded of why having a backup story or two is a

major part in us shaking off dark feelings when they arise and usually I’ll do whatever it takes to cast them aside and get on with life.

This time, though, I decided to stay stuck in the muck for a while. I surrendered to the blues while thinking of one of my favourite quotes from my mother-in-law: “This too shall pass.”

One of my best friends also sent me some words of wisdom in a text that simply said: “If ‘Plan A’ doesn’t work, don’t worry.

The alphabet has 25 more letters.”

The note came out of the blue, unsolicited and without her knowing anything about what I was going through or thinking about.

Reading it was a gift. I typed it out and hung it at my desk. And now that I’ve written this column, I’ll get working on ‘Plan B.’ Or whatever letter I happen to be on now.

great idea. I also recalled something that my former boss brought up when I first proposed this “On a Brighter Note” column almost five years ago.

“Won’t you run out of positive things to write about?” he had asked.

I felt like calling him and answering: “Yes, yes I will.”

At the time, that seemed impossible.

After his unconvinced response to my idea, I sat down with a coffee and easily came up with over one hundred future topic ideas just like that.

But a funny thing happens when you’re living life and you go into a self-induced shut-down mode: your freedom to express yourself can all of a sudden feel less than free.

And your eagerness to look for the silver lining in every experience can occasionally dissipate.

But that’s the ebb and flow of life. Some days we’re happy and we feel like we’re walking on air.

Other days we’re glum and feel weighed down by stress and strain.

Do the right thing Editor: To the drivers who cannot or do not care when or how they leave a parking lot.

Do you not realize when you hit someone?

Do you realize and not care that there is a big smudge of blue paint left on the back corner of my vehicle?

It is a small, white motorhome. Kind of hard to miss.

Can you not tell when you have hit someone with your vehicle?

This is the second time in two years.

Last time it was a line of red paint all the way down the driver’s side.

This time a smudge of blue paint on the left back corner the size of a doormat.

What is wrong with the drivers today? Do they not care? There was a time that you waited or left a note.

Now, nothing.

I hope someone does the same to you someday.

Please learn consideration for others. Leave a note. Almost everyone knows my van. Contact me and make amends. It’s up to you and you’re at fault.

Be honest.

The wife and I just went for flu shots.

We didn’t need this aggravation, it’s not our fault that we need to use this vehicle for a car.

Getting to know local products and producers through brand recognition ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter For local producers, getting the word out and being recognized for their quality products produced in the North Cariboo is top on the priority list. To that end North Cariboo Farm Country – Grown for You brand was launched by the North Cariboo Agricultural Marketing Association (FARMED) in partnership with Quesnel Community Economic Development Corporation.

The branding project is part of FARMED’s larger North Cariboo Agriculture Awareness and Market Project.

The agriculture sector in the North Cariboo is comprised of a wide variety of family-based mixed farms producing products such as meat, poultry, birch syrup, vegetables, fruit, fibre, wines and honey.

In addition to the products, the North Cariboo also offers a wide variety of services such as accommodation and agritourism experiences.

However, understanding how to communicate this wealth of consumer products and services to locals and visitors is the task FARMED has embarked on.

Twenty-one local businesses have signed up to brand their products and services under the North Cariboo Farm Country – Grown for You logo. Farmers’ Market shoppers will have received reusable shopping bags at the summer markets and the brand will be prominent at the Christmas Markets, Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and 14. Other branding projects are also in development.

Many consumers are unaware of the wealth of local shopping available during the winter months.

Along with locally raised beef, lamb, goat and poultry products, the North Cariboo also offers soaps, vinegars, birch syrup products, winter vegetables, jams, jellies and other value-added canning, blankets, alpaca products, wool, other fibre products and a host of activities including birthday party venues, horse boarding and riding lessons, B&B services, wagon and sleigh rides.

“Brand recognition helps to raise awareness of the diversity of products available in the North Cariboo,” FARMED secretary Lori Fogerty said.

“Whether they are grown, made or services provided, brand recognition aids the producer by assisting them in marketing, which will then lead to increased sales and a contribution to the local economy.

“It is estimated that when purchasing from local producers, 45 per cent of the dollars spent remain within the region as compared to 10 per cent when purchasing from larger chains.”

By marketing their products and services under a unified brand, local producers increase the opportunity to reach new consumers and expand their market.

FARMED sees this as important for several reasons.

Agriculture, over the last decade, has been relatively unchanged and the aging demographic of farmers in the region shows over the next few years there is great potential for increased productivity and for younger farmers to get in the game.

There is increasing demand for locally-produced goods and producers must step up and meet this demand, thus expanding such areas as agritourism, farm gate sales and alternate crops as well as what has traditionally been on offer.

Many of the products offered from local producers are available at Good For You Market.

Other tools, created by FARMED, can assist the consumer to access local products and services such as the Year-Round North Cariboo Farm Products Guide, with more than 60 farms listed with their products, contact information and where they’re available for purchase. The guide is available at the Visitor Centre and North Cariboo Co-op, free of charge or at the FARMED website www.farmed.ca.

Whenever you see the North Cariboo Grown for You logo, consumers can trust they are a neighbour who is providing local, quality products and services. Be a good neighbour and shop locally.

Robert Dennis Gilbert (Bob) Nov. 29, 1946 ~ Nov. 11, 2013

Robert Dennis Gilbert (Bob), aged 66 passed away peacefully on November 11, 2013 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He will be lovingly remembered by daughter Denise, son Robbin and his grandchildren. He will also be fondly remembered by his brother Harve (Rosalie), sister Elsie (Fred), brother Jim (Sue), brother John (Dale), brother Dave (Moreena) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Robert was born in Bella Coola, B.C., November 29, 1946. He spent his working years in the forest industry at Ocean Falls, Queen Charlotte Island, Nass River

and the past 30 years in Quesnel, for Inwood Trucking as a truck driver. Robert loved to fish and always looked forward to fishing with his brothers in Bella Coola or wherever the back roads map books inspired them to check out.

A celebration of life will take place on November 16, 2013, at 1 pm at the Red Bluff Hall, (1286 Lust Road).

November 7, 1963 sewer project ends Well Under Budget “Quesnel’s municipal sewer project has been completed well within the budgeted figure of $750,000. A report from Willis and Cunliffe Engineering Ltd., consultants on the project, reveals a total net cost to date of $722,303.60 though provision is being made for additional costs that are estimated at approximately $8,400. These additional costs will cover installation of steel pipe on the new P.G.E. railway bridge to link the Johnston subdivision area with the no. 1 treatment plant.

Gross cost of the project totaled $832,463.77.

Against this are estimated rebates of $77,442.01 from Federal and Provincial Winter Works grants and a Central Mortgage and Housing corp. rebate of $32,718.16 for which the town qualifies through completing the project ahead of schedule. In all, there were 20 miles of sewer lines installed, together with 343 manholes of which 135 were shallow type A and 208 type B deep manholes.” ”This Column is to highlight our 50th Anniversary

REMEMBER TO RECYCLE

It is with great sadness the family of Richard Ernest Gook Senior announces that he passed away November 6, 2013 at Dunrovin Lodge in Quesnel BC. Richard was born in Quesnel, the second of four children, and grew up in Kersley on Hold Rd. As a young man Richard joined the armed forces serving overseas as a lieutenant in the Second World War for five years.

His regiment fought for the Liberation of Holland in 1945 and Richard returned to Canada later that same year. In June of 1946 Richard married his lifelong sweetheart Flavia at the Catholic Church on Front Street.

Richard followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a BC Land Surveyor in 1956. Through his work he surveyed many areas of the interior including Wells, Nazko, Williams Lake and the Chilcotin. He later articled his son Richard as a BC Land Surveyor.

Richard was a personable, independent man with a strong sense of justice. He worked at the local,

provincial and federal levels to promote change.

Richard was a devoted family man who deeply loved his children and grandchildren. Riders Ridge, the log home he built on the Hydraulic Road with views of Dragon Lake, was a sanctuary for family and a touchstone for friends and relatives. Richard loved the outdoors and canoed many rivers in central BC. He also enjoyed fishing the small lakes close to his home. Richard and Flavia were life long square dancers and never missed the Old Time Fiddlers New Years Eve Dance.

Richard is predeceased by his beloved wife Flavia of 64 years, his parents Ernest John and Marjorie Gook, his brother Hugh Gook and his sister Ruth Webster. He is survived by his brother Peter Gook, children Betty Ambery, Judy McGregor, Richard Gook (Monica), Carolyn Jacob (Norman), eleven grand children and three great grand children.

The family would like to thank the staff at Dunrovin Lodge who supported Richard in his final years.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, November 16, 2013 at St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Quesnel. A reception will follow at the Tower Inn. Donations in Richard’s name can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 94.

Richard will be deeply missed by family, friends and colleagues... the Cariboo has lost one of its founding fathers.

Behind the name

R

emembrance Day – a day when many pause to reflect on the sacrifices given by others. It is a time that seems to evoke memories and stories of a period in history that we hope will never recur.

It is at this time that family history becomes more important. Case in point, Susan Jarvis’ story of finding out what happened to her father 69 years later.

Killed in a firefight in Cordebugle, France PAST TIME before she was born, her father was part of a unit pushing the Germans toward the River Seine. His name is one of eight on a plaque on the town monument. If not for the efforts of another soldier’s relative, Susan many never have known what really happened to the father she never met. It is that same Adelbert “Buddy” Miller that Tom Moffat tells the story about when they were playing ball and Buddy fired a baseball at him and it hit Tom’s middle finger and buckled the knuckle. He still bears the results of that incident today.

Those anecdotal stories of Buddy Miller and 18 other young Quesnel ‘boys’ are immortalized in Tom Moffat’s DVD called The Wall of Fame. Tom’s ‘labour of love’ was started more than 13 years ago just after the old Legion building burnt down. Concerned that many stories and memories had burned with it, Tom took it upon himself to research and record the histories of the 19 young men who went to war (WWII) and never returned.

For years, Tom would attend Remembrance Day Ceremonies at schools and tell their stories so they would not be forgotten. Finally, he was persuaded to make a video and it is now available for those who wish to learn more about Quesnel’s contribution to world peace.

Names like Cameron, Purmal, Len Harper, Milton Hill, Billy Winder and Robertson are ones that should have us all pause to reflect on what others have done for us. Many West Quesnel streets are named after these young men. As you drive through those neighbourhoods, consider taking the time to say a little thank you to those who made certain we have the freedom to do so.

We are the Dead. Short days ago, we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and were loved.

Double digit double-header ‘Roos trample Rampage and beat Tomahawks JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Kangaroos fans got to see a show this weekend as the 'Roos mowed down two teams.

"We were playing hockey like it should be played," said coach Brian Kozak.

Saturday, the 'Roos started their double-header against the Lac La Hache Tomahawks.

The last time the two teams met, with the Tomahawks hosting, it was a disaster for the 'Roos, who lost, 6-2.

But that was early in the season and this time, it was the 'Roos who were the benefactors of an uneven final score, winning 10-2.

Kozak was happy with the team's play, saying a raft of turnovers in the neutral zone and a solid zone defence netted the win for them. An impressive 68 shots on goal vouched for the team's dominance in the game.

Kozak was particularly happy with Joel Boyetchko, who had a hand in half of the 'Roos goals in the game.

Goalie Ryan Manderson also had a solid game between the posts, stopping 28 of 30 shots on goal.

The game was even through the first, with the 'Roos' Tyrell Turgeon putting the first numeral up on the scoreboard at 5:15, followed by a Lac La Hache goal less than a minute after.

Lac La Hache took the lead in the dying minutes of the period, but Justin Fulton put one in for the 'Roos with less than two minutes left to knot up the

score after twenty minutes.

In the second, the 'Roos began to dominate.

Half a minute in Alessio Tomassetti took the ‘Roos back into the lead. Rigby Burgart put another one in halfway through the period to put the 'Roos up by two.

In the third, the scoring started five minutes in and didn't let up until the end of the game. Alec Gibbs scored at 5:15, followed by Tomassetti at 5:45.

Harley Gilks scored a minute later. Matt Stang got a point at 11 minutes on a shorthanded rush then added another

two and a half minutes later.

Joel Boyetchko scored the final of the night at 17:46, capping off a run of assists that netted him five points.

Sunday, the 'Roos were similarly juggernaut-like, taking down the Prince Rupert Rampage, 8-2.

In Mike Moody's first start of the season, he managed to keep the puck out of the net for 40 minutes, helping the 'Roos to take a firm hold on the game and allowing only two of the 39 shots on goal past him.

The Tomassetti, Johnson, Fulton line worked the other end of the ice, scoring,

or having a hand in, every goal but the final.

"They were just flying," Kozak said.

Kozak praised the way the team came together for the game, saying the team played hard and the resulting turnovers frustrated the Rampage team.

Tomassetti started the 'Roos off just past the half point in the first. Paul Girodat followed up three minutes later, putting the puck in on the power play.

Tomassetti snuck another one in before the end of the first to give the 'Roos a three-goal lead going into the second.

The second mirrored the first for goals, though it got off to a quicker start, as Johnson got his first of the game just three minutes in.

Twelve second's later Fulton netted his first of the game. At nine and a half minutes, Tomassetti put in his third of the game for the hat trick.

The Rampage capitalized on the 'Roos penalty trouble early in the third, scoring a power play goal at just over one minute in and another at the seven minute mark.

The twin goals seemed to snap the 'Roos out of complacency. Tomassetti scored his fourth of the night a minute later, followed by Corey Petrie adding the finishing touches at the 10 minute mark.

The ‘Roos are back on the road again next weekend in their last doubleheader roadtrip. The weekend begins in Houston playing the Luckies, then the ‘Roos move on to take on the Smithers Steelheads in Smithers.

Quesnel ringette players hit the ice in P.G. Nov. 9 – 10 the Quesnel Ringette Association sent four teams to the annual Joy Hoffman Ringette tournament in Prince George.

By all accounts the teams played hard and performed well against some fierce competition from around the north.

The U-9 (under nine) team, comprised of players from 5 – 8 years old, played their first games of the season (and their careers) on the weekend and judging by the smiles on their faces enjoyed the experience.

The improvement in skating ability and their growing awareness of the game made for some pleased parents and coaches.

The U-10 (under 10) team put on a solid performance for their four games,

going undefeated this weekend.

The conversation in the stands and on the bench was not about the wins, but of the communication, passing and teamwork that the team demonstrated.

The U-12 (under 12) team came out a little sleepy in their first game at 6:45am Saturday against Prince George White but rallied in their second game against Prince George Red and demonstrated how speed can defeat size.

The third game was a hard fought loss against a strong combined Terrace and Prince George team.

The U-14 (under 14) team played four tough and fast games coming away with a one and three record.

A large bench and some fierce play had Quesnel competitive

throughout the tourney and they managed to put all the pieces together to beat Prince George in the last game of the tournament.

Coaches from all teams were pleased with results and the effort and are looking forward to playing at their home tournament the first weekend of January.

In conjunction with Sports Day in Canada, The Quesnel Ringette Association is hosting a “Come Try Ringette” night on Nov. 30, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Any children interested in trying Ringette are welcome to come to the arena for an introduction to ringette, some fun games on ice and prizes!

erenity’s victories over Bear just keep getting easier as they are the only team to defeat their furry friends in regulation with this week’s 7-1 pasting giving them a 17-5 goal advantage in three contests.

The superlative team effort was lead by George (Of the Jungle) Paul who scored two early and was last seen hovering near the Bear Blue Steve Dodge line looking for PAPERBACK WRITER the hat trick.

Chipping in with a pair of points apiece were Glen (Chips ahoy) Goymer, Eric (The Fanatic) Stankic, Wade (Rivers) Fenton and Eric (Bonsai) Bodman who made no mistake with a post and in shot to give him a lofty 194 goals in his career.

Also scoring for the Builders was Todd (The Body) Gryshuck and (Darting) Darcy McGillivray who make up for their vertical challenge with their explosive speed and tenacity.

Meanwhile back at the ‘New Rink’ which may keep that name for another decade with a No vote this weekend, BCS vaulted into second place with a 5-3 victory over a GM group looking sluggish after their King of the Hill victory last weekend.

The black clad BCS side got a super human effort from Bruce (Almighty) Broughton who scored one and added a pair of assists as Budd (Crash) Carter scored a pair and added an assist despite playing at only 75 per cent.

Continuing his fine rookie campaign was Jason (Junior) Johnson who scored his ninth of the season as Brian (The Dominator) Domeris scored an unassisted beauty for his second.

Replying for the Chevy Crew was Kevin (Night Rider) Hesslegrave, Colin Keis (Avenue) and Grant (Plants) Johannesen who are looking forward to next week as they face the equally slumping Bear Bunch that they defeated last time in a shoot-out.

This week in Season nine (2002) Saw Red’s Chad (The Comet) Swanson score twice and assist on five as Bob (Cyclone) Taylor and Ryan (Wildone) Walker scored two each with Adam (Pinball) Veley notching his fourth of the year as he deposited the puck where he kept his peanut butter and Playboys in his youth.

Changes at QYSA The QYSA is restructuring after a change in demographics in the city.

There was a large bubble of players born in the mid nineties (1994-96) which created higher registrations in their age groups. These kids are now either adults or graduating, so they have left the association. The number of students registered in the Quesnel School district for the grades K through 10 is now quite stable, so the associations believes the numbers should stay stable in the coming years. It does, however, give them some concern when trying to form REP teams in the spring time as the pool of athletes really isn't that large.

With this in mind, the association is launching a new initiative with the other Cariboo youth soccer clubs (Williams Lake and 100 Mile House) called Cariboo United. They hope to bring the elite players together and provide them with further opportunities to develop their skills and hopefully open doors to higher levels of play, such as the BC High Performance League (BCHPL - the highest level of youth soccer in BC) and university soccer.

This winter the girl’s program begins. If that is succesful, they will be able to add boys as well – they didn't have enough response from the boys to properly run a program.

The Europeans do luxury and performance better than most and the Japanese luxury brands have been putting in their time to becoming a real force.

But long before the Japanese, there have always been the American luxury brands, with many firsts in features and technology. Established in 1902, Cadillac is one of the oldest, along with Mercedes-Benz, and continues to be General Motors’ flagship in terms of refinement and technology.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2010 to 2012 An all-new 2010-model year E-Class Coupe beat its sedan counterpart into Canadian Mercedes-Benz dealerships, in mid-2009.

Style, safety and comfort are fundamental characteristics of an E-Class, which is considered to be one of the safest cars in the world.

This generation E-Class came with ten air bags and a new Pre-Safe system that readies all on-board safety systems, when it detects that a collision may be about to happen.

A car to savour on a long road trip, this E-Class came with a new “Intelligent” body structure that’s 30 per cent more rigid than its predecessor, incredibly comfortable seating and a newly developed suspension with shock absorbers that automatically adjust to a driving situation. An optional air suspension was also available with an electronic damping system.

The E350 (coupe or sedan) is powered by a 3.5 litre V6 with 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The E550 (coupe or sedan) has a 5.5 litre V8 that can generate 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque.

The sedan also comes in a high-performance AMG 63 edition with a 6.2-litre V8 that makes 518 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque.

All three engines are mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and drive goes to the rear wheels of the Coupe and to all four wheels of the Sedan. The rear-drive 3.5L V6 gets best fuel economy at 11.9 L/100/km in the city and 7.6 L/100/km on the highway.

The 6.2L V8 is the gas guzzler, with a city/highway rating of 16.5/10.2 L/100/ km. All three engines also prefer premium fuel.

A standard Dynamic Handling package also allows the driver choose a sporty-set-up at the touch of a button. This changes the continuously variable damping, the speed-sensitive power steering (with variable centering), ESP/ASR (traction control), accelerator response, and speed of automatic gear changes.

New active safety innovations included Attention Assist, which is a driver drowsiness monitor, PreSafe, which is preventative occupant protection system, Adaptive High Beam Assist, which automatically dims headlight high beams, and an automatic emergency braking system called Distronic Plus.

Attention Assist is a warning system that can sense a drop in driver attention

level. It continuously monitors more than 70 different driver performance parameters, such as erratic steering behaviour, and will signal when it’s time for the driver to take a break.

Four new E-Class models were added for the 2011 model year: an E350 4MATIC station wagon, E350 BlueTEC diesel sedan, and two convertibles, the E350 cabriolet and E550 cabriolet. At highway cruising speeds you can barely hear the E350 BlueTEC diesel engine, throttle response is fast (for a diesel) and pulling power (398 lb ft of torque from 1600 to 2400 rpm) is phenomenal.

Engine upgrades followed in 2012. The E350 4MATIC got a direct-injection 3.5-litre V6. The E550 4MATIC got a 4.6-litre bi-turbo V8 and the E63 AMG got a 5.5-litre bi-turbo V8. All models also receive a revised transmission, electric power steering and LED license plates.

Even though owner costs tend to be higher than average, the E-Class made Consumer Reports’ ‘Recommended list of cars to buy and the E350 BlueTEC was singled out for special praise. Investing in collector car futures

1993-1995 RX-7

Looking into my automotive crystal ball, I see a number of reasonably priced Japanese cars with the potential to go up in value, not down.

And while you wait for their price to rise these collector cars of the future should give you endless driving pleasure – that is until you sell!

Now to be fair, I’ve not always been right so there’s a caution.

In 1973, I recall talking to a man, who had just returned to the UK from Australia. He told me about a car called a Honda Civic, which would make a Mini look ridiculous in comparison. My immediate reaction was that I had seen the Toyota Corollas that were just beginning to arrive in England and felt that the Mini did not have anything to worry about. Japanese cars were cheap and would not catch on. How wrong was I? I can tell you that early Japanese cars are becoming much sought

after so let’s look at some that are still affordable, if you can find a survivor or rust free example.

If you still have one of the first generation Honda Civics, the majority were finished in a metallic gold, blue or green, I would suggest you look after it. In the future, these cars will appeal to the demographic that grew up with them and they will be the future collectors.

1973-1979: Honda Civic: The Honda Civic was introduced during the OPEC oil crisis, first as a two-door and then a three-

door hatchback. The transversely mounted (similar to the Mini) 1169 cc engine driving the front-wheels was very peppy and spacious. The Civic was similar to other “Made in Japan” items and considered a throw away automobile and that is exactly what happened to most of them.

Rust helped speed up the process also. If you can find a pristine, rust free example, wrap it in cotton wool, it won’t command over $1 million as some Toyota 200GTs have recently but it will increase in value as time goes by.

Pay $4,000 - $9,000.

1990-1999 Mazda Miata: Introduced in May of 1989, the Miata is considered the Japanese Lotus Elan. Unlike the thoroughbred and somewhat finicky Lotus engine, the Miata’s four-cylinder, twin-cam, four-valves-per cylinder engine is very reliable.

In an eight-year production run, 430,000 first generation Miatas were built. This rock solid, rear-wheel-drive sports car does not rattle or shake like most convertibles. The soft top can be raised and lowered effortlessly with just one hand. The Japanese engineers tried out more than 100 different exhaust systems until they achieved the sound they desired to make it sound like a British sports car. Pay $5,500 - $9,000.

1990-1999 Toyota MR2: The second generation MR2 was larger and weighed (160 to 180 kg) more than its square predecessor.

The body styling was now much more streamlined; if you use your imagination, it has a resemblance to both the Ferrari 348 and the Ferrari F355. Because of this, the new MR2 was labeled by some as "The poor man's Ferrari". If you purchase the turbocharged version, you might feel like you are driving a Ferrari!

But he and his wife Catherine have the last laugh when they open up their hydro bill.

“I think the last bill was just a few dollars more than the one we got before we

bought the car in July so that’s inexpensive driving,” said Knowles.

“I work out at the airport and so I travel about 10 kilometres each way every day. I never let the battery go below 20 percent but I still find I can sometimes go four days before I plug it in overnight.”

In the summer, Knowles said he can easily get up to the 160 km range on a single charge but knows

the Vancouver Island winter will take that down to around 120 as the wipers and heater take their energy toll.

“We moved from Ladner three-and-half years ago with our Smart Diesel. I think people here thought we would by something a little bigger – this is the truck capital of the Island after all.”

But they came back from a car-shopping jaunt from

Richmond with the little electric car, which set them back around $26,990 less a generous BC government rebate of $5,000.

The car charges on what is called a level one (basic) charger but with rebates now offered on fast chargers, they are contemplating investing in one.

Mazda had priced this model out of the market. If you can find a mechanic familiar with rotary engines and want to have some fun, this is the model to consider, definitely one-step up from the Miata.

Knowles got in touch with Driveway to tell of his experiences with the smart car, following our launch piece on the BMWi3 electric car a few weeks ago. We would like to hear from others, who are driving pure electric vehicles in rural areas.

Electric vehicles are frequently dismissed as being good only for urban dwellers. The Knowles couple are demonstrating they can serve people outside of major cities. Admittedly, they don’t travel far each day but then surely that’s the case for many rural residents.

Yes, trucks, larger cars and SUVs will always dominate in parts of the province where are harsh winters are commonplace and distances travelled are greater. But cars like the Smart and i3 maybe have a role to play as a family’s second vehicle in those locations.

Every time you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, there’s a possibility you can change your life or the lives of others.

We might not think too much about it, but operating a vehicle is a huge responsibility.

Poor driving habits, not shoulder checking, not using your signals, driving in the left lane when you’re not passing are minor details in the grand scheme of things, but have a large impact.

It’s never too late to refresh the basics and then pick up a few new good habits.

For example, if you look at any of the top athletes in their sport, they’re training most of the time. They’re trying to perfect their craft, even when they’re at the top of it.

I doubt Sebastian Vettel slums around in his down time, even after winning his fourth consecutive Formula1 world championship. Sure, he gets a break, but he’s constantly training to be faster and stronger.

In another interview, I chatted with Izod Indy racecar driver Simona de Silvestro. She tells me that there’s really no such thing as an “off-season.” She says she trains all year long.

In fact, she trains harder when she’s not always behind the wheel of a car to prepare for the upcoming races.

If the pros do it, we should to.

Some of the most fun I’ve had behind the wheel of a car has been at a driving school. Whether it was the three-day racing school at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with the Skip Barber program, or a track day at the Mission Raceway with Morrisport Advanced Driving, or even a track program close to you, it’s a win-win.

If we’re all safer drivers then the chances of accidents are minimized and we can keep our vehicles dent-free longer.

And avoid going through insurance claims. The few hundred dollars it takes to enrol is of infinite worth in the long run.
