Living with diabetes takes more than a physical toll on a person: it can also be financially expensive.

That’s why Sukhdev Krishan and his partner Jen Briand have organized a Diabetes Walkathon for this Saturday, Nov. 16 at Bob Dailey Stadium.

Briand has type 1 diabetes, and must test her blood every time she eats. Her insulin doses vary depending on what her blood sugars are at the time.

Briand uses a lancer to prick her finger and tests her blood sugar level on a test strip. She has insulin “pens” for injecting the drug. She has to rotate the area she injects the drug so she doesn’t get too much insulin at once.

She has been doing this since she was first diagnosed when she was 12 years old.

For someone who’s life is dependent on insulin, taking the medicine is not a choice. But it’s expensive, says Briand.

One of the insulin types she uses—a longer lasting version she takes before she goes to sleep so it will last all night—used to cost $128 every two weeks, and it wasn’t covered by

There are certain types of test strips that also aren’t covered, Krishan said.

Krishan and Briand, who also run DragonDeal22. com, a crowdfunding website, set up this fundraiser to help others who aren’t as fortunate as Briand, and who cannot afford their medication.

“We welcome everybody in the community who has diabetes or knows someone who has it to come out and support the cause,” Krishan said.

The walkathon kicks off at 10 a.m. and ends at 4

p.m. Krishan and Briand are asking people to make a donation at the gate in order to come in and participate.

Tim Hortons has contributed to this event, and the Alberni District Secondary School samosa tent will be set up on behalf of dry grad.

A Port Alberni high school teacher who was suspended for questionable conduct in 2009 could be back teaching again.

The BC Teachers Regulation Branch publicly released a consent resolution

Uptown taxation bylaw passed

agreement that it reached with James Ellery Goddard. The release was one of seven teacher disciplinary decisions released last month.

The background and facts contained in the decision cite a series of unusual alcohol-fuelled verbally abusive incidents which occurred between 2006-2010.

Among the incidents

cited, Goddard allowed a troubled female student to live at his home.

He also drank alcohol in the presence of students, allowed former students to drink in his home, and engaged in personal conversations with students via text, telephone and social media.

Between 2008-2010 Goddard made a series

of angry, abusive and intoxicated phone calls to several school officials, even at one point involving one official’s spouse and daughter.

Goddard admitted to drinking heavily in 2007.

He has since completed a residential treatment program for the issue.

He has not taught since July 2009. School District 70 superintendent Cam

Pinkerton confirmed that Goddard has not been off with pay.

Goddard won’t be allowed to return to teaching unless he provides a letter from an addictions specialist citing that he is alcohol free and fit to teach, and that he follow up every six to 12 months. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

South Port Alberni has itself a new revitalization tax exemption bylaw.

City councillors voted to accept the bylaw at their Nov. 12 meeting.

The bylaw has been amended to reduce the footprint of the area impacted by the bylaw, and does so by excluding city property, Harbour Quay and lower Third Avenue.

The bylaw encourages property owners within the zone to create or improve commercial and multi-family spaces.

Under the plan, a $1 million investment entitles an owner to a 100 per cent municipal tax exemption on improvement costs for a maximum of 10 years.

A $100,000 investment fetches a 100 per cent municipal tax exemption on improvement costs for up to a maximum of five years.

Coun. Jack McLeman asked about language in the bylaw that he felt wasn’t strong enough. “I want no money to go out unless there is a permit,” he said.

He asked about establishments that went out of business, and whether the exemption would still be grafted to them.

“If the use stops then the exemption stops,” city manager Ken Watson said.

McLeman also asked about homeowners who convert their properties from residential to commercial use, and whether they’d be eligible for an exemption.

School closure still an option as SD 70 budget crunch looms WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

T

he Alberni Valley school district is reopening the possibility of closing a school to save costs in the new budget year.

“The board would have to look at all things including that,” SD70 secretary treasurer Lindsay Cheetham said of de-commissioning a school.

“If we need to balance the budget we’ll have to figure out a way to do that, either through staff or program cuts, or through some other method.”

School District 70 is still facing cost increases that didn’t have an accompanying increase in resources, Cheetham said.

Specifically, teachers’ pensions are costing the district $250,000 this year.

As well, CUPE wage increases tally in at $166,000 this year, and will cost $300,000 next year.

The district also received fewer dollars for transportation, but it reconfigured bus routes and tendered a new water taxi contract on the West Coast to deal with it, he said.

A $1 million surplus from last year is allowing the district to pay for increases over and above the district’s overall budget.

The cost pressures and how to deal with them remain a topic of discussion with trustees. “We have to figure out a plan with the board for next year and moving forward,” Cheetham said.

Last February, trustees voted unanimously to not close an elementary school this year.

However, no detailed plan was laid out about how they were

going to make up the $300,000 they would have saved had they closed a school.

The district submitted a cost saving plan to the Ministry of Education in October that outlined how it was going to deal with the CUPE increase.

But the plan isn’t being made public, Cheetham said.

“We’ve outlined some options about what we can do to save money but there’s nothing definite in it,” he said.

Cheetham cited legal reasons for why the cost saving plan won’t be made public. Bargaining with CUPE isn’t over until the district signs off on the plan.

“The legal counsel at BCPSEA (B.C. Public School Employers’ Association) said that (revealing) it might jeopardize bargaining.”

crunch never went away,” School District 70 trustee Gaelle Frey said.

The matter hasn’t been discussed at public board meetings. “It will be talked more about after Christmas during the budget discussions,” Frey said.

The Alberni District Teachers’ Union has been left out of the loop on any discussions about the issue, and that’s unfortunate, president Ken Zydyk said.

“We want to help, but you can’t be part of the solution when you’re not part of the problem solving.”

The transportation issue was resolved.

“What other challenges are there that can be targeted in a specific way — we don’t know,” Zydyk said. “We’ve had no discussions about what other avenues there may be.”

Parks plan on display The AlberniClayoquot Regional District will host a community open house on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Echo Centre to discuss its regional parks and trails master plan.

The regional district is currently putting

together a parks and trails plan for the entire region, from Mount Arrowsmith to the West Coast and from Bamfield north to the Hesquiaht Peninsula.

Public input is welcome. The open house runs from 2:30–

7:30 p.m.

Two more open houses are planned for Tofino on Nov. 27 (2:30–8:30 p.m. in council chambers) and Ucluelet on Nov. 28 (3–7 p.m. at the rec centre). A draft plan will be done in January.

Officials hope that a new protocol signed between Woodtech 21 and North Island College will breathe new life and attract new blood to the Valley’s forest industry.

Spokesperson Gillian Trumper announced Monday at the city council meeting that the protocol was

actually signed in July.

The memorandum sets out how the two organizations will work together on common issues.

In particular, Trumper said she hopes they can work together to establish a series of programs dealing with forestry and wood.

“This corresponds with a need for core programs in it,” she said. “It’s not just about cutting down trees and making twoby-fours. It’s about what you can extract.”

A niche campus isn’t unusual, she said.

North Island College in Campbell River has aquaculture and mining studies. And the Courtenay campus has trades programs.

“This campus should be the centre of excellence with forestry for North Island College,” Trumper said.

Woodtech officials had an initial meeting with new NIC president John Bowman and have another scheduled in two weeks, she said. “He worked with colleges in the north that aren’t the centre of the main college like ours,” she said.

Trumper also wants to get college and forestry officials on the same page.

The meetings would better enable the

college to deliver specific training needs industry has, she said.

Woodtech has put up $5,000 to being establishing a forestry training initiative in the Valley, and hopes the college will match that, Trumper said.

The initiative would keep young people in the Valley earning good wages and put more kids in schools, she said.

Catalyst officials have even had cursory meetings with NIC about training initiatives, Trumper said.

New blood and not old bones are needed to fill positions that are set to open up in a revitalized forest industry, Coun. Jack McLeman said.

Young people aren’t entering the forest industry, and that’s causing serious problems, McLeman said. “People aren’t retiring. Or retired people are being called back to work,” he said. A lot of fatalities are occurring as a result, usually ones involving logging trucks, he added.

“The present forest industry as a place to work, we don’t need what we have right now,” McLeman said.

NIC officials are eager to discuss forestry initiatives in Port Alberni.

An elephant in the room Run out of things to talk about? Real estate, and the price of obtaining a home, is always a surefire conversation starter.

Especially in Metro Vancouver, where housing prices rank amongst some of the highest in the world.

And with the prospect of interest rates going higher in the near future, home ownership is only going to get more expensive.

The Royal Bank’s housing affordability index, released every spring, says the cost of owning a detached bungalow in Metro Vancouver already chews up more than 80 per cent of a household’s pre-tax income.

That includes mortgage payments, utilities and property taxes.

That doesn’t leave much left over for necessities like food and clothing, let alone life’s occasional indulgences such as a vacation or a night out at the movies.

Single family homes in neighbourhoods like New Westminster’s Queen’s Park or Buckingham and Kensington in Burnaby, already average more than $1 million.

Even condos are becoming beyond the reach of many aspiring to own their home.

To keep price points down, developers build smaller and smaller units, some barely bigger than a living room in a fullsized house.

New rules introduced by the federal government in 2012 were meant to temper red-hot real estate markets by making it tougher for first-time buyers to qualify for a mortgage and less likely to get in over their heads.

But their effect has largely worn off.

Witness the cranes dotting the skylines of Burnaby and New Westminster, and the lineups when the sales centres for new projects open.

The market for real estate in Metro Vancouver seems insatiable. Whether we can afford it to be that way should be the real topic of conversation.

Untangling the politics of oil pipelines TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

ICTORIA – Reaction was swift and scattered after the “framework agreement” on new oil pipelines announced last week by B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Alberta Premier Alison Redford.

First, here’s what it doesn’t mean.

“B.C. blinked,” according to one Toronto commentator, based on the popular notion that B.C. gave up its claim to a share of Alberta’s resource royalties from heavy oil.

Clark never made such a claim, so it would be difficult to give it up.

Her often-repeated condition of a “fair share” of revenues from any new oil pipelines is purposely vague, but after repeated protests from Alberta, Clark clarified as far back as last June that provincial royalties are not on the table. There is no constitutional way to

make such a demand, a point Redford has made several times.

NDP leader Adrian Dix and the usual chorus of professional protesters claimed that Clark flipflopped, opposing the Enbridge Northern Gateway proposal before the election and then embracing it once she was re-elected.

This is also inaccurate.

Clark’s five conditions were set out before the May election, demanding approval by a federal environmental review, “worldleading” spill prevention and response capability on land and at sea, meeting legal requirements to consult and share benefits with aboriginal communities, and the undefined “fair share” for B.C. Clark said numerous times during the campaign that the conditions have not been met, and made

pessimistic noises about Northern Gateway, but she very carefully did not campaign against it. The B.C. Liberal platform also endorsed a Kitimat-area oil refinery proposed by this newspaper’s owner, and Clark repeatedly referred to that sort of industrial expansion as one of the potential “fair share” components for B.C. The B.C. Liberal government made its opposition to Northern Gateway “as currently proposed” official on May 31, two weeks after the election, in its final submission to the federal review panel.

If Clark had wanted to jump on the anti-pipeline bandwagon for political gain, that move could have been made earlier.

NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra Herbert said the B.C. government has taken the position that more oil will reach the

West Coast, by rail if not by pipeline. I’m not sure if or when that claim was made, but it’s true that rail shipments are already permitted.

Here’s what Redford and Clark agreed on.

Redford accepts B.C.’s five conditions, provincial royalties excluded, and Clark endorsed Redford’s proposed “Canadian Energy Strategy,” which B.C. rejected last year.

A draft of the strategy released last summer contains no specifics on how it would facilitate a pipeline project from Alberta to B.C. It talks about developing Canada’s energy reserves and at the same time somehow reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promises a final version next spring.

Oh, and Quebec refuses to participate.

Ottawa has jurisdiction over inter-provincial projects such as Northern Gateway and the proposal

by Kinder Morgan Canada to expand the 60-year-old Trans Mountain pipeline to Burnaby and refineries in Washington.

If there is to be some extra revenue for B.C. from oil traffic, it could theoretically take the form of a toll on pipelines.

Redford pointed out the problem with that idea in her speech to an energy forum in Vancouver last week.

She noted that 42 per cent of B.C. natural gas is piped through Alberta to markets. If B.C. can toll Alberta

oil, the same could be done with B.C. gas.

None of B.C.’s five conditions has yet been met. Legally, they don’t have to be, except for the one about accommodating aboriginal title.

Faux friends forfend truth To the Editor,

Re: B.C., Alberta resolve pipeline cash question (www. albernivalleynews. com, Nov. 6).

Apparently Ms. Clark and Ms. Redford have patched up their faux uneasy relationship.

It was always clear that the initial tough stance Clark took with her “five conditions” was simply a getelected ruse for we B.C. lemming voters and that deals for

pipelines, tar sands, etc. would resurface as soon as it was politically prudent.

Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports “record breaking heat-trapping gases (GHG’s) from human activities reached record highs in 2012 and have upset the natural balance of our atmosphere and are a major contribution to climate change. This spells devastating consequences for the future of the planet and time is not on our side.”

Similarly, the New York Times reports that the next installment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) report of the global scientific consensus on global warming and climate change is both alarming and devastating.

Canada is now the premiere global pariah regarding environmental and climate sustainability.

Clark and Redford are fighting it out as to who will be the gold medal flag bearer that will lead us over the cliff for a few shekels of gold. P.M. Harper is cheering them on.

For years my wife and I have shared our bedroom with Peter Mansbridge, and sometimes he brings along interesting, though sometimes sour-faced and not necessarily beguiling, characters with him.

Recently Mr. Mansbridge proudly announced that the CBC’s “100 Days Countdown To Sochi” had begun.

No thanks, Peter, you’ve overstayed your welcome in our bedroom; the Olympics have been so tarnished for so long that I do everything possible to avoid them.

More than a half-century ago female competitors from Eastern Bloc countries looked more like musclebound stevedores as they claimed all the medals; something told me back then that they didn’t get that way by eating Soviet Wheaties.

Then, not long afterwards, Scandinavian shipmates showed me newspaper cuttings about their athletes crossing into Russia for blood-doping.

Over many decades

there have been so many more examples of crooked officials and cheating athletes, and so many broken promises to clean up the drug-fuelled image of the Olympics.

Those making and taking illicit pharmaceuticals are more sophisticated than ever, and always several steps ahead of the testing authorities.

Still, the glitz and glory is just too much to be ignored by media organizations, who pay huge amounts for broadcast rights; despite the Games usually being a huge economic drain on host countries.

We don’t easily forget the 2010 Financial Fiascolympics held in Vancouver and Whistler, and B.C.’s taxpayers will never truly learn how much those Games really cost.

As for Sochi, the biggest game in that Black Sea resort may soon be how to survive the “Sea Of Red Ink”, after breaking all spending records and all the banks.

No thanks, CBC, you can keep your 100 Days Countdown To Sochi; we’ll be going to bed with Lisa La Flamme and her CTV team from now on.

Rule shields water violators To the Editor,

The B.C. government has refused to release the list of those who have not paid water use fines for abuse of the law.

Two-thirds—66 per cent—of fines were unpaid to the court for Water Act violations and 40 per cent of court fines issued for all environmental violations went unpaid.

The government did not reveal names of late paying violators or those with outstanding fines.

This information should be a matter of public record.

Three years ago the Ministry of Environment recommended that a list of these violators would be published and to this date their own recommendations have not been followed.

No wonder that so many of these polluters can carry on with impunity whereas a regular citizen would be prosecuted and fines collected.

Thompson pleads guilty to manslaughter in brother’s death WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Second degree murder charges may be dropped against the man who killed his brother last spring, provincial prosecutor Todd Patola said.

Archibald Thompson III, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in Nanaimo Provincial Court on Nov. 5.

A series of reports including pre-sentence, psychological and a Gladue report are to be prepared before Thompson appears for sentencing on Jan. 20, 2014, Patola said.

Thompson was

originally charged with one count of second-degree murder in connection with the same incident.

“But if the manslaughter charge is completed and he is sentenced then the murder charges may not go forward,” Patola said.

On May 6, Aaron Anthony Thompson was found on Redford Street suffering from a stab wound. He later died at West Coast General Hospital.

An RCMP dog team flushed Archibald Thompson out of Dry Creek Park and he was arrested on Frank Street after a foot chase. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Canada World Youth arrive in city YOUTH: | Host families still needed for CWY. Eighteen youth from Vietnam and throughout Canada are set to begin their volunteer work here in Port Alberni.

The Vietnamese phase of the Canada World Youth Exchange Program was highly productive, boasting many hours of English teaching, reproductive health awareness campaigns, building a village volleyball court/playground, and many new and great cross-cultural learning experiences, coordinator Lisa Jaster said.

“This is a good and interesting way for you to be apart of the great volunteer work that the team does in the community; by welcoming them into

your home even if just for a short time,” Jaster said.

She looked at me with dull eyes; eyes that I know were more accustomed to shining with boundless childlike energy. Mary knew things weren’t right.

Bulldogs bolster finances A society status and gaming license will allow Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society to take the edge off of financial losses, PAJHS director Bob Cole said.

“We now have the tools to offset the usual losses experienced by many Junior A hockey franchises,” Cole said.

“Especially those operating in smaller market areas or highly competitive markets.”

Prince George, Trail, Merritt

and Powell River operate in similar markets, Cole said.

“They all survive on lotteries for funding and the stability of volunteers, staff and coaching for their success,” he said.

“They’ve all been to the top and bottom of the standings with up and down cycles.”

The Van Isle Ford Midget Bulldogs came close but lost to eventual winner New Westminster Royals 3-2 in the semi final of the Remembrance Day tournament last weekend.

Nine teams competed in the tournament held at the AV Multiplex including Surrey, Okanagan, the North Shore and New

Neither team scored in the first period after teams hit the ice in the Coulson Rink at 7:45 a.m. Monday.

The Bulldogs drew first blood in the second period on a goal by Ethan Sundstrum. Matt Irg would notch another goal in the second but that was it for Alberni scoring.

Sometimes a little formality can be a lot of fun camera screen.

Wonderful shot, lighting perfect, Ron was wearing red and the red was popping off the screen, contrasting with the blackish muslin backdrop.

Then happy Ron went around the room with hand-made tickets selling photo spots to tables.

I photographed groups of seven and groups of nine and groups of 13, all against the nine-footwide muslin backdrop.

volunteered my photographic services for the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Bulb Luncheon in October.

On that blithesome day Les and I loaded up the Explorer with tons of photographic gear and whatnots.

The luncheon started at noon so I thought that being at the church at 10 a.m. should give me enough time to set up. I did set up in the allotted time, in fact it was 11:45 a.m. when I was ready and waiting for my first shoot.

I had set up a mini shooting studio with nine-foot-wide by 20-foot-long blackish muslin (held to the floor with black Gorilla tape), a Strobe Softbox at the camera ( high and pointed towards the subject) and a silver speckled umbrella halfway between the Softbox and the subject.

The Softbox gave me soft glamour lighting and the silver umbrella was for a fill with a bit of zing.

I put my Nikon on a tripod with the 17-70 mm lens and screwed a three-foot remote firing button onto the front of the camera. I then took flash meter

And the cuts come at a time when costs to rent a new venue have almost doubled, while the number of seats has been cut in half to 500.

The arts council depends on two major grants, from the BC Arts Council and a gaming grant, to operate. Martin also applies for several smaller annual grants, and sometimes is successful, she said.

Two years ago the arts council lost funding and it meant an employee had to be laid off.

This time, it’s cutting into children’s programs and supplies, Martin said.

“Here I’m trying to expand in that area and I’m getting less money. So I have to be more creative.”

When Martin was hired three years ago she made a commitment to increase arts programming for children in the Alberni Valley, since schools have been forced to cut funding to arts programs. She has cultivated a good relationship with the school district and regularly pairs artists with schools.

Arts are important because they are a part of everyone’s life in some way.

The arts council will be electing new board members.

The late Nelson Joseph was a wellknown personality in the Alberni Valley.

Artist, carver and member of the Hupacasath First Nation, his artwork was distinctive and was collected far and wide.

A new project is currently underway that will showcase and celebrate Joseph’s work and share some insight into the man himself.

Artist/researchers Rod Sayers and Emily Luce are working with Nelson’s family and the Alberni Valley Museum to mount an exhibition of work which includes: plaques, paddles, masks, small totems, rattles and jewellery boxes, all carved from cedar and finished with his trademark brown polish.

“We invite anyone who has a piece of Nelson’s art or a story or memory to come and share it with us,” Harding said.

“We would like to document as many works of Nelson’s as we can.”

Joseph has always been an influence to Sayers, who as a child with a vivid imagination remembers seeing him walking on River Road with his carvings.

Everywhere Sayers went there seemed to be carvings by Joseph.

When Joseph passed away without ever having had a formal exhibition of his work, Sayers felt that it was important to document this work and its contribution to the history of the Hupacasath people and the Alberni Valley.

The exhibition is planned for spring of 2014.

Phil’s Harmonics String Orchestra is already feeling the effects of the gaming cuts, organizer Bonnie Wallbank said.

Phil’s Harmonics has been part of the orchestra and chorus society since 2001 and usually uses gaming funds to pay for an accompanist and students who come in and assist with performances.

“We don’t make a lot of money. There’s always music to buy,” Wallbank said.

Phil’s Harmonics is fortunate that Fir Park Village allows them to rehearse in the seniors’ facility free of charge at the

moment, Wallbank said. The orchestra regularly performs at Fir Park, Echo Village and Heritage Place for free.

They usually perform at Rollin Art Centre’s Teas on the Terrace in the summer for a small honorarium, and they hire themselves out to private events like weddings, Wallbank said.

Phil’s Harmonics will team up with Barkley Sounds Community Choir for a Christmas concert at the ADSS Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 1 (2:30 p.m.).

They will share the $750 rental cost.

B.C. racecar driver Cherie Storms told me she was taking an advanced driver training course to appease her father’s wishes.

She’d been putting it off since teenagedom. That said, her father is an accomplished racecar driver and a proficient motorist, so you could argue it was an inevitability.

But she had to find the desire in herself first. What followed, even she didn’t think would happen. She recently took home the championship title for the B Spec series in her Mazda2 for the 2013 race season.

She grew up in a motorsports household but it wasn’t until she actually got behind the wheel at the driving course that her mindset changed.

“I was just overwhelmed with all of the technical aspects that it takes to be a good driver,” she stated.
