A nation at war:

Canada’s First Nations people have contributed to this country’s war efforts as much as any other group of Canadians.

According to the Canadian Forces, thousands of Aboriginal men and women voluntarily enlisted during the First and Second World wars. Many served in Korea, Vietnam and peacekeeping efforts. More than 500 status First Nations servicemen lost their lives on foreign battlefields during the world wars, and the number of casualties was much higher.

In fact, says Margaret Teneese, archivist for the Ktunaxa Nation, First Nations had a very high percentage of enlistment, though she wouldn’t classify it as entirely voluntary.

Teneese says that residential schools played a huge part in the experience of First Nations people joining the war effort. The schools shaped them for battle, left them vulnerable to the suggestion of recruitment officers and also contributed to post traumatic stress after military service.

“Indian Affairs wrote to the local Indian Agent in Cranbrook here asking for a list of eligible men who could be approached about joining the army. In those days, young men coming out of residential school were vulnerable. Some weren’t old enough but lied to get in because there were no men their age left in the community. They came out of residential school and didn’t know what to do with their lives, so they enlisted. I came across a list the Indian Agent made of young men eligible for recruitment and I thought, so in a way, they were drafted.

“That list also revealed in terms of our population, the Ktunaxa had the highest percentage of First Nation people enlistment in Canada. Most of our eligible men enlisted.”

From the Canadian Army archives; “The role of Indian agents in recruiting and Indian Affairs policies regarding enlistments from reserves fluctuated during the First World War, which reflected the contradictory mandate of the Department of Indian Affairs: it was expected to protect the rights of status Indians as well as to act in the interests of the federal government. Historian James Dempsey has charted the apparent inconsistencies in how government administrators and recruiters applied the rules. In large part, the government’s decision to actively recruit Indians appears to have been a response to Prime Minister Robert Borden’s efforts to replace the increasingly high

number of casualties in front-line units by 1916.” It should also be noted that First Nations in Canada were not even able to vote in Federal or Provincial elections during WWI and WWII. Teneese says in her experience speaking with elders from the Ktunaxa who served in battle,that they, like many other soldiers, are reluctant to speak of it.

“I can remember my uncle, who is non native and a World War II veteran, getting angry and upset when we were watching a war movie,” Teneese said. We were curious why he was so upset so we started asking questions. He explained to us about paratroopers being dropped behind enemy lines in broad daylight and being shot out of the sky like sitting ducks.

This was the part of the movie he saw us watching and it traumatized him. We continued asking more questions and he started sharing more about his experience in the front lines. I realized he hadn’t talked about his war experience before. In those days, there was no Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment easing soldiers back into society.

Many returned shell shocked and never had the opportunity to safely talk about their experience.”

It is an irony, Teneese says, that while residential schools often provided the perfect training to create good soldiers, many First Nations soldiers entered the war already experiencing post-traumatic stress from residential schools. That stress, coupled with PTSD from war experiences, made it doubly difficult for many veterans when they returned.

“Residential school conditioned the men for the army,” Teneese said. “They were already regimented — used to making beds perfectly and taking orders without questioning. They were issued a number upon arrival at the residential school which was put on all their possessions, They were given a uniform, They were already dehumanized.”

However, First Nations soldiers also brought a skill set to the armed forces that many other veterans didn’t, including a familiarity with living on the land. This would be helpful during boot camp. In World War II, they were assigned work that fit the skills they brought from their past experience like sign language and tracking skills.

Those who worked as loggers ended up in the Canadian Forestry Corp. If they were recruited directly from the residential school they enrolled as privates.

On November 11, we honour each and every person who served to protect their country.

Cranbrook will mark its annual Remembrance Day ceremonies in Rotary Park, beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday November 11, 2013.

Veterans, Legion members, dignitaries and participating groups will march in to Rotary Park, starting from behind the East Kootenay Community Credit Union on Baker Street, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Following the ceremonies, the public is invited back to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch, at 800 Cranbrook Street, starting at 1 p.m. for a time of fellowship.

Yet Still They March: The Cranbrook Cenotaph A history of the cenotaph, built in 1922 Jim C ameron

In April of 1920 a committee, under the guidance of W.F.Cameron, was appointed

by City Council to undertake the erection of a suitable War Memorial in Cranbrook.

Following much discussion on the design of the memorial Mr. Cameron suggested something “…not too showy, perhaps a twenty foot shaft upon a granite base with names inscribed along the bottom.”

By late spring of that year the Memorial Committee decided to raise funds and accordingly sent volunteers on a house-to-house subscription (donation) campaign. Contributors were asked to show their gratitude and to “…meet the canvassers with your pocketbook wide open.” A noble thought but apparently one that fell somewhat short of the mark. Following the initial fund drive there was no action taken until January of the following year when the Cranbrook Herald published

an editorial chastising citizens with the words “… towns in south-eastern B.C. (read Nelson) are putting forth efforts to proceed with the erection of a memorial. What is the East Kootenay doing? Are we keeping the faith? The answer came back. No!” This incited a renewed interest in the project and again committees were struck and meetings held. At a public meeting in September, 1921, three possibilities were brought forward: a Memorial Park, a Memorial Monument and — the most popular — a Memorial Library. There was, curiously, a Mr. C.B. Simpson of Nelson who happened to be at the meeting and happened to have plans for a free-standing monument that he happened to be happy to share with those in attendance.

This proved to be an expedient solution and the die was cast.

(Note: Proponents of a new Library were not to be consoled for another eighty years.)

In fact, the design chosen was almost identical to that put forth over a year earlier.

The bill paid by subscription efforts along with a substantial grant from City Council.

The unveiling took place April 9, 1922, the 5th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, on land adjacent to the Great War Veterans Association Hall (the present-day Byng Hotel). Almost a thousand people were in attendance when two flags covering the monument were undraped by Mrs. F. Patton (who had lost a brother, a brotherin-law and a husband to the Great War) and the flag-corners held by four children: Graham and Winifred Patton and Leonard and Harold Porter. There followed the laying of wreaths, sprays and crosses as the list of inscribed names was read aloud by Dr. F.W.Green. It was a lengthy ceremony that continued later that evening with a dinner and dance in the GWVA Hall.

When the GWVA was succeeded by the newly formed Legion in 1926 the monument was uprooted and placed on a new base in front of the former Government Building on the east end of Baker St. (the present day Safeway parking

lot). It remained in place for many years but was moved during the 1960s to its modern day location in Park to allow construction of the Cranbrook Mall.

The Cranbrook Memorial Cenotaph has stood in the community for 90 years, a tribute to those who selflessly gave there lives for our Freedom. Perhaps the best words are those spoken by Dr. Rev. Crummy of Red Deer, Alberta, during his address at the initial unveiling so many years ago: “Mothers of Cranbrook will bring their children in the days to come and point to this monument. Mothers and Fathers will tell their children the stories of heroism and I believe they will grow big in the hearts of the children of tomorrow.”

The inscription on the Monument Title face reads: “To the honour and memory of Our Boys From Cranbrook District Who gave their lives for liberty. Their Names Live For Evermore.”

I will have the honour of attending Remembrance Day ceremonies in Sparwood this year. I would especially like to recognize my son M\Cpl. Matthew Wilks (1CER) for his contributions to Canada’s efforts in Afghanistan. He served in Afghanistan from November 2010 to July 2011 and will be joining me in Sparwood on November 11th. During Veterans Week I will be travelling throughout the constituency and on November 12th I will be speaking with students in

Sparwood.

Our Government was proud to designate 2013 the Year of the Korean War Veteran. We proudly remember the heroes of the Korean War and their brave fight to uphold freedom, democracy and the rule of law. In summer 2013, our Government participated in ceremonies across Canada marking the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and the first annual Korean War Veterans Day, a national day of recognition enshrined in law by the our Government. We also recently unveiled a new Canadian monument in the Republic of Korea dedicated to the Canadians Armed Forces personnel who fought during the war.

And finally, to the men and women of our Armed Forces: on behalf of myself, my family, and the residents of Kootenay Columbia, we thank you for your service. Their determination in the face of adversity will never be forgotten and we are forever in their debt.

Since the loss of Kimberley’s Legion Branch a couple of years ago, the task of keeping Remembrance Day alive has fallen to the local Air Cadet squadron, assisted by Kimberley’s Elks Club.

This year’s Remembrance Day service will happen as it always does, at the Cenotaph across from the former Legion building.

The cadets have taken over organizing the parade, which will muster at the Elks Club at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 11, for arrival at the Cenotaph at 10:55 a.m.

Those marching can leave extra coats and personal items in the Elks Hall. The parade will leave the Elks, proceed into the Platzl on Deer Park and then head to the Cenotaph.

Post-ceremony, the Elks invite one and all for lunch and fellowship at the Elks Hall. Please note, minors are welcome to attend.
