Taseko disputes report

AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter After an environmental assessment on the proposed New Prosperity came down, Taseko is disputing the findings.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency federal review panel reported: “that the New Prosperity Project would result in several significant adverse environmental effects; the key ones being effects on water quality in Fish Lake (Teztan Biny), on fish and fish habitat in Fish Lake…”

However, Taseko is calling out the agency for an “unprecedented error.”

“The panel relied heavily on a modelling design undertaken

by Natural Resources which indicated that there would be significant seepage from the tailings storage facility into Fish Lake, causing adverse effects on fish and fish habitat, wetlands and First Nations interests in the area,” Taseko released.

“This is not Taseko’s design. Simply put, Taseko’s design includes a basin liner of low permeability compact soil, glacial till that significantly restricts water seepage. This is an accepted

practice in modern facilities recently permitted in B.C. and elsewhere in the world.

Natural Resources Canada’s design did not include a liner.”

Now Taseko is requesting that the federal environment minister not make a decision on the future of New Prosperity Mine without first considering this new information.

“The design proposed

by Taseko for the tailings storage facility includes development of a continuous low permeability compact soil liner to restrict seepage losses,” their release states.

“The NRCan design, which was the basis of their analysis, is completely different than the Taseko design, as NRCan has assumed that the low permeability basin liner is not included and that seepage will therefore readily leak into more pervious overburden and fractured bedrock.”

“Knight Piesold is one of the pre-eminent engineering firms in the world,” Taseko president and CEO Russell Hallbauer said.

No budget increase for council

Council ratified a zero per cent increase with respect to indemnity rates for 2014 in accordance with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Each year, in November, the Clerk’s Office calculates the CPI adjustment for January of the next year.

The CPI rate for September 2013 was zero per cent and Council affirmed that there would be no increase to the budget for council indemnities in 2014.

Short-term vs. Long-term Investments: What’s the Difference?

At various times, many people may feel frustrated by the performance of their investments. For example, they expect growth, and they don’t get it — or they think the value of their investment won’t fluctuate much, but it does. However, some of this frustration might be alleviated if investors were more familiar with the nature of their investment vehicles. Specifically, it’s important to keep in mind the difference between long-term and short-term investments.

What defines long-term and short-term investments?

Long-term investments are those vehicles that you intend to hold for more than one year — in fact, you generally intend to hold them for several years.

On the other hand, you usually hold short-term investments for one year or less.

You can find several key distinctions between shortterm and long-term vehicles. Here are a few to consider: They carry different expectations When you purchase an investment that you intend to keep for many years, you may be expecting the investment to increase in value so that you can eventually sell it for a profit. In addition, you may be looking for the investment to provide income. When you purchase a short-term vehicle, you are generally not expecting much in the way of a return or an increase in value. Typically, you purchase shortterm investments for the relatively greater degree of principal protection they are designed to provide.

They meet different needs at different times of life You will have different investment needs at different times of your life. When you’re young, and just starting out in your career, you may require a mix of long- and short-term investments. You might need the short-term ones to help pay for a down payment on a home, while the long-term ones could be used to help build resources for your retirement. But later in life, when you’re either closing in on retirement, or you’re already retired, you may have much less need for long-term vehicles, with a corresponding increase in your need for short-term investments.

They can satisfy different goals If you purchase investments that you intend to hold for the long term, you probably have a long-term goal in mind — such as building resources to help pay for a comfortable retirement or leaving a legacy. On the other hand, a short-term investment would be more appropriate if you know that you will need a certain amount of money at a certain time — perhaps to purchase a car or to fund a vacation.

They carry different risks All investments carry some type of risk. One of the biggest risks associated with long-term investments is volatility, the fluctuations in the financial markets that can cause investments to lose value. On the other hand, short-term investment vehicles may be subject to purchasing power risk — the risk that your investment’s return will not keep up with inflation.

As an investor, you’ll probably need a mix of longterm and short-term vehicles. By knowing the differences between these two categories, you should have a good idea of what to expect from your investments — and this knowledge can help you make those choices that are right for you.

The City of Quesnel has multiple vacancies available on the Museum and Heritage Commission. The Commission is a volunteer board reporting to City Council. The Commission plays an active role in providing direction and recommending policy to Council regarding the operation of the Quesnel Museum & Archives as well as a mandate to promote community heritage awareness and conservation.

The Commission consists of one Council member, one CRD Northern Director and eight members selected at large appointed for a two-year term.

No previous museum experience is required. Of importance is your enthusiasm for local history and community heritage conservation as well as your interest to help establish policy and a vision for the Quesnel museum. The Commission meets monthly or as business requires. Letters of interest will be accepted until 4:30 pm November 20, 2013. ell, we have quietly entered into the month of November and sunshine! It is the month in which we turn our clocks back one hour and expect, any day, a beautiful cover of snow over the community.

November is also the month that council has proclaimed Disabled Parking Awareness Month.

While there is not much we can do about losing an hour of sleep or waking up to snow, there is something we can all do to recognize and be aware of just how important parking is for disabled residents.

Alison Duddy and Lynn Turner, two of our most dedicated advocates, are launching the second annual campaign this month to promote the cause – Be Aware, Show You Care.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE The main goal of the campaign is to educate the public and raise awareness on the proper use of accessible (disabled) parking spots and permits. Alison and Lynn will be out in the community this month at different accessible spots throughout the city.

They will be holding signs reminding the public to Be Aware, Show You Care.

Throughout the month-long campaign, local businesses will be displaying posters and have available in-store, information brochures which will include asking people to leave designated spots for those who

truly need them. They will also have a voice on the radio this month so listen for them.

Some of the issues disabled people encounter include people parking too close to disabled spots, making it difficult or sometimes impossible for disabled persons to get themselves and their mobility aid (wheelchair, walker, cane, etc.) in and out of their vehicles. I am told that the number of people, without a permit, who park in accessible stalls, is astounding. The improper use of disabled parking permits is also an issue. These include improperly displaying the placard, using an expired placard, using someone else’s placard and using an accessible parking spot when someone other than the placard holder is exiting the

vehicle. In this case, it is the placard holder who must be exiting the vehicle, not an able bodied passenger.

Alison and Lynn want people to know that these parking spots are not a luxury for people with a disability, they are a necessity.

The principle behind designated parking is the right of all people to have access to the community. For some, designated parking is the only way to gain this access, especially here in the north where winter conditions make it even more difficult for the disabled to access the community for goods and services as well as entertainment and social interaction.

Council and the City of Quesnel are supportive of this campaign and would like to remind residents not to judge by appearances and that accessible

Formerly of Fort St. John, and a long and happy retirement with her loving Philip of 65 years in their gardens in Nanaimo and Quesnel, Mum is also survived by children Ron (Pat) of Quesnel, Valerie (Gordon) Sherriff of Courtenay, Chris (Cathy) and Tim (MaeAnne) of Fort St. John, along with ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Clark, Redford find common pipeline ground TOM FLETCHER Black Press Premier Christy Clark met Alberta Premier Alison Redford in Vancouver Thursday to announce what they are calling a “framework agreement” for heavy oil pipeline expansion to the West Coast.

Alberta agrees to support B.C.’s demand for a revenue share from the oil production and export, as long as it doesn’t come from Alberta’s resource royalties. B.C. agrees to support Alberta’s call for a national energy strategy, Clark and Redford said Tuesday.

“Alberta has reached a broader understanding and acceptance of British Columbia’s five conditions and our province had agreed to join the Canadian Energy Strategy discussions started by Premier Redford,” Clark told reporters at an energy conference in Vancouver.

In previous meetings, Redford has been adamant that none of Alberta’s resource royalties from oilsands crude will be shared. B.C. has argued that the oil producers and the federal government have to find a solution to the conditions for approval laid down

by Clark.

Redford said her proposed national strategy is to address interprovincial projects such as pipelines,

recognizing that energy is a provincial jurisdiction.

“We don’t think this is about quid pro quo or gotcha politics,” Redford said. “This is about putting in place economic models that are going to work for Canada, for each of our economies, and allow for product to move.”

Clark said she is pleased that Redford accepted her conditions and the assurance she gave at their June meeting in Kelowna that B.C. isn’t after Alberta’s resource royalties. B.C. makes substantial royalties from natural gas and hopes to increase that substantially with exports, Clark said.

NDP leader Adrian Dix contrasted Tuesday’s statements with Clark’s position before the May election, where the government told the federal review panel on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline proposal it was opposed.

NDP environment critic Spencer Chandra Herbert said B.C. has also changed its position to say oil shipments are “going to happen, whether by train or by pipeline.”

Redford visited B.C. to give a keynote speech to an energy forum hosted by the Vancouver Board of Trade.

The sold-out event included a panel discussion with Redford and Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson, whose company is

proposing to expand its Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta to its Burnaby marine terminal and refineries in Burnaby and Washington.

by Black Press how his company would respond if B.C. proposes a specific tax or toll on each barrel of oil shipped through the twinned

Trans Mountain pipeline.

“I think it’s far too early to be talking about those kinds of concepts,” Anderson said. “We’re looking to define and deliver the benefits from our project directly to communities in British Columbia.

The extent to which the B.C. government evaluates those,

they’ll do so on their own accord and they’ll call me if they need to.”

ur municipalities and province likely won’t be using Internet voting to help determine election results anytime soon. That doesn’t mean we won’t eventually be using such a method to cast our ballots in future.

An independent panel tasked by Elections B.C. to study Internet voting recommended that any such system not be implemented in time for the upcoming municipal election, nor the next B.C. vote.

But it did suggest that a technical committee be struck to look into the matter further and that the legislature should support jurisdictions that wish to pursue the option in future.

The preliminary report offered less than lukewarm support for the idea. It confirmed that making voting easier for people in this way – those who are incapacitated, can’t work a trip to their local polling station into their schedule, or are too lazy to do so come to mind – has not been shown in other jurisdictions to significantly increase voter turnout.

Increasing voter turnout at any level still comes down to individuals and parties doing the legwork and convincing non-voters of the importance of getting engaged in their communities, and potentially making a difference through casting their ballot.

That said, the world is fast becoming an all-digital environment, where computers and cellphones can be used for virtually any transaction.

While the report states the current system of voting is trusted by those who vote, that factor will become less meaningful as time goes on and generations that have grown up with technology become our communities’ core voters.

We may not have the most efficient or system-improving Internet voting experiences to draw from yet, but now is the best time to begin investigating this option, to be ready for when it is the best alternative.

y uncle was diagnosed with an advanced stage of prostate cancer three years ago and since learning of his condition, I’ve paid more attention to Movember. It’s taken on more meaning for me since this ugly disease has affected my family and someone I love.

Movember, of course, takes place during the month of November and it is the official global charity dedicated to having an everlasting impact on men’s health. It raises money for prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health. This is important since men die on average five to six years younger than women and often from preventable diseases. Their suicide rate is also four times higher.

What do moustaches have to do with it? The small group who created the charity in 2003 decided to use it as the catalyst for change. The concept was by changing your appearance and growing a “mo” for 30 days, you could change the understanding and attitudes

“Guys don’t communicate the way women do,” my friend Cameron Carter said.

“This charity gets them talking and I know from experience that the moustaches are a conversation starter.”

By growing a mo and becoming a “Mo Bro” four years ago, Cameron has enjoyed explaining the mission of the organization, and he raises money by asking his friends to donate just $5 each. But it’s the education part he enjoys the most.

“When I found out that one in seven men get prostate cancer, I thought, hey, that’s two guys on my ball team,” he said.

“I’d better let them know.”

Realizing that he can’t influence everyone, he says that even if only one man improves his health or gets checked out and his life is saved, he knows he’s doing the right thing.

“A lot of guys are afraid to get the prostate exam because they think it will hurt,” he said.

“But it doesn’t, and it’s only mildly uncomfortable for seconds. That’s nothing compared to what women go through with their pap tests and mammograms.”

Not everyone’s supportive of Movember though. I’ve heard from a lot of people that they’ve had enough with all the campaigns trying to raise funds and awareness, and don’t believe any of it helps. I completely disagree.

A mere 10 years ago, 30 men banded together in Australia to become the first “Mo Bros.” Since then the Movember movement has grown to include 20 additional countries that raised over $146 million last year alone. 87 per cent of the funds raised go directly to research and managed programs and more men have become pro-

A message to Gold Pan residents from Canfor CEO Editor: After 18 months of searching for a different solution, I announced last week that Canfor will be permanently closing our mill in Quesnel in March 2014.

Our Quesnel facility has been one of the key mills behind the success of our China market program and we deeply regret that this closure decision is necessary.

Through the dedicated effort of our 209 employees in Quesnel, Canfor was able to produce lumber from some of the most heavily mountain pine beetleimpacted fibre in British Columbia and ship 100 per cent of it to China.

and are saddened to see it come to an end.

When our mill closes, Canfor will not walk away from the Quesnel employees who have given so much to our organization.

Canfor believes in putting people first and we will stand by our Quesnel employees through what will surely be a difficult transition.

Every member of our team here will be offered a position at another Canfor division.

For those that choose to remain in the community, Canfor will work with our regional competitors and other employers to find positions for as many of our Quesnel employees as possible. Over the days to come, we will

also work with our contractors and suppliers to determine how they can be accommodated in other areas of our operation.

The decision to close a profitable sawmill is very difficult, but there is simply not enough fibre in the Quesnel area to support all of the mills in the community. While we considered every option – including harvesting areas currently constrained for environmental reasons or bringing in wood from longer distances - these would only have delayed the inevitable.

The other part of the decision to close our Quesnel mill was choosing what to do with our tenure rights. It is in the best interests of the

community for the tenure to be utilized and not held indefinitely after the closure. We also want this to be the last mountain pine beetle closure we take at Canfor, so we looked for a Quesnel operator who would be willing to exchange tenure in one of our other operating areas, allowing us to safeguard the future of another Canfor mill.

As was announced today, we have entered into an agreement with West Fraser that allows us to strengthen our fibre position in Houston while they do so in Quesnel. It is important to note that every metre of the AAC remains to be harvested, hauled and processed here in Quesnel.

I recognize that our

decision to close the Quesnel mill will be unwelcome news for the community and that some may push to find another solution.

I want to say clearly: if there was an option that would allow us to keep a profitable mill in operation, we would have found it. B.C.’s government has taken all possible steps to manage the impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic while developing new offshore markets and ensuring a forest policy framework that allows our industry to be globally competitive.

That our industry had Chinese customer opportunities to support our companies, workers and communities through

the U.S. housing market collapse was largely the result of government policy and market development work of a decade ago. It is critical that this work continue.

I want to thank every member of our Quesnel team for their support and dedication through the years.

You can rely on my personal commitment to ease the strain of this closure on you and your families. While the period of adjustment will be challenging, I believe strongly that we have made the right decision for Quesnel and for the families and businesses that will continue to thrive here.

A chair, a box and a couple of canes

A

sa maintenance man rolled dad’s big recliner chair on a dolly down the corridor to just outside mother’s door, the impact of my father’s death finally hit me. He spent so much of his time in this chair in later years in a large nursing home in Regina as his fight with Parkinson’s disease progressed.

Now the chair was empty and I had an empty feeling too.

Motherwas also in the same nursing home, but they were unable to share a room because they required different levels of care. The chair would not fit in mother’s room.

We’d considered donating the chair to the nursing home which had provided such fine care for dad for the past 10 years. The sheepskin could certainly be used to make one of the patients more comfortable in a wheelchair but I just couldn’t leave the

chair. It was so much a part of dad.

But how do you transport one large, reclining chair back home to British Columbia on a small car? We lifted the chair carefully onto the roof rack, making the car appear even smaller, and drove through Regina to my cousin’s house. We were grateful she had room and would take care of the chair until we could return with more satisfactory hauling arrangements.

In the meantime, we noticed with increasing alarm how mother’s handwriting had changed. It became more and more difficult for her to write or even speak

on the phone – her mind affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Eventually, she too, was moved to the third floor for more extensive care. Many of her belongings were put into storage since space was limited in the room she shared with another woman.

On a subsequent visit to the nursing home my aunt and I, with a nursing supervisor, followed a maintenance man to the storage room in the basement. On shelves were boxes, trunks, pieces of luggage and furniture all plainly labelled with owner’s names.

As we found my parents possessions,

the nursing supervisor pointed out the importance of seniors to designate their possessions to a relative or friend in the event of an emergency.

“So often there is confusion added to bereavement when someone dies.

Sometimes there is no next of kin known to the residents,” she added.

I looked into a large cardboard box and spotted a black metal box that had always been guarded even when I was a small child. I realized the importance of passing on treasures to someone who cares and share the importance of these

possessions.

“If there is ever a fire in the house grab this black box and get out as quickly as possible,” I could hear my father saying. It was a rare occasion my brother or I were allowed to view its contents.

At one time the box contained the title to three-quarters of a section of land in Saskatchewan that was being homesteaded. Among other things there were papers and ribbons my father attained in WWI. Later his Veteran’s Guard memorabilia was tucked away carefully in the black box. see PAGE A12

Message from the past: work for a better future right here at home from A11 Now there was a pile of letters, neatly tied, written by dad to mother while he was away in the army – very private and very precious.

Suddenly it brought back very vivid memories of what I regarded as one of the saddest day in my life, July 12, 1939.

When I was 10 years old my life came to an abrupt halt on July 12, 1939. It was the day our dad left to enlist in the Veteran’s Guard and be shipped ‘down east’. From our sparsely populated farming community in Saskatchewan even the trip to Regina with Uncle Jim was a big affair. I can’t remember where he was going but I remember what I wore. I was allowed to wear my good pink dress with ruffles.

Mother had made this for going to church.

Dad had been the centre of my universe because he always had time to listen to our problems even while he was repairing canvass for the binder before crops could be cut.

Mom was good to us and saw to it that our basic needs were met. Her nurse’s training often came in handy, but I don’t remember her hugging us to give us comfort if we fell.

When he was in the army again my dad, Newton Anderson, was an avid letter writer and a vital connection continued

Newton Anderson between us. We knew he was one of the veterans guarding German prisoners first in Ontario and later in Alberta.

Through him we gained insight into the lives of these prisoners. For them they had no choice on what they had to do. They weren’t the monsters I imagined them to be while listening to the news.

It was then I decided something had to be done about the war. I composed a letter to Hitler in bold printing. After all I was 10 years old. I could read and write and knew the importance of

getting an urgent message to where it mattered most.

I don’t remember exactly what I wrote but I think it was something like this: HITLER: (I printed the word dear then crossed it out).

PLEASE STOP RIGHT NOW FROM TAKING OVER OTHER PEOPLE’S LAND. IT’S NOT RIGHT. HAVE YOUR MEN WITHDRAW. RUTH ANDERSON I found an envelope and folded the letter, written on a page from my scribbler, and tucked inside and sealed.

The only address

I knew was Adolf Hitler, Germany, but I figured he was so well known the mail service would have no problem delivering it. Only one problem. I had no money for a stamp and I didn’t want mother to know what I was doing. I knew I could be in a lot of trouble tampering with mail service but I had to get it off my chest. There was a possibility the letter would just go into the garbage. I do remember I did have a bit of a guilty conscience using our mail service this way but I had to do something. Mother and my brother knew nothing about my criminal action and for a time I wondered if there would be repercussions.

The war continued and Hitler and his advisors were oblivious to the plight of so many innocent people. So many lives lost. So much needless destruction, all for greed.

On subsequent trips through Germany and France to the beaches of Normandy the sight of row upon row of crosses marking graves of those who had lost their lives made a real impact on us.

Even in the Balkan states evidence of oppression still appears everywhere.

Have we learned anything? Surely in this age of enlightenment we might be able to

put down brutal oppressors and be able to make fair and equable decisions.

We should try to understand one another’s culture and needs, make compromise and communicate each other’s needs.

The black box I now have in my possession with treasures from my parent’s past – dad‘s service ribbons from the army in WW1 and WW2, a small New Testament, a shiny metal mirror and a thick pile of letters secured by a rubber band from dad to mother, my brother and me.

A worn old scribbler was found with notes made by mother in doing research to improve conditions for native Indians and an address book with people‘s names of every nationality. If I could only continue their work, I thought.

The boxes from the long term care facility were carefully loaded into a U-haul trailer and we made our way back to British Columbia.

The chair is just what was needed in our living room, its plaid upholstery and brown vinyl arms blending perfectly with our beige rug and homespun drapes. Also precious are the two canes which are there to give us the support we need through our walk through life.

The black box rests on a shelf in a closet providing us with inspiration and incentive to help others as they did when they were able.

I like to think dad left an unwritten message that perhaps we can start in our own community and country for a better future.

Remembrance Day 2013 Daphne’s life – anything but ordinary Plane-spotting an important wartime job

I

n 1941, 16-yearold Daphne Rickard joined the British army in the AIS, the Auxillary Territorial Service, however it was really an escape from her 12 years in boarding school. Placed with the nuns in a Roman Catholic convent in a small community on the outskirts of London, Daphne spoke highly of the teachers and staff but said she merely endured life behind the barred windows and walled convent.

“I learned all the facts of life in boarding school,” Daphne said.

Her father, a former banker who worked in several Far East locations (Daphne was born in FooChow, China) and then elected mayor of Bedford, England and her mother knew nothing of her enlistment until it was too late.

The AIS was designed to assist, on the home front, with the war effort. After mustering in, Daphne was assigned to the 608183 Heavy Artillery group, living in a barracks (not unlike her convent dormitory) and admitted she had no idea what she was doing nor what she wanted to do.

But as many British subjects believed, Daphne was prepared to do her duty. She was taught how to recognized planes by their silhouettes.

“It was my job to spot planes coming from any direction and fortunately I had very good eye sight and hearing,” she said.

She was tasked with spotting incoming planes of all types using binoculars when on duty along with an instrument called a

height-taker. One person on one end would determine the height the plane was flying, another person on the other end would determine its speed and Daphne, peering into an eye piece in the centre of the instrument would quickly calculate when to shoot and then give the order to fire. She said even when offduty she was always on alert.

“We knew the German’s were already in the Channel Islands, about 10 miles from England, close to where we were,” she said.

It was during this time Daphne and a girlfriend took time one evening to attend a dance in Folkston.

They had stepped outside onto a deck when they noticed a doodlebug heading directly towards where they were standing. A doodlebug was a bomb with a timer that would detonate either when it hit something or

the timer went off.

Both women figured it must have hit the water below the deck and exploded, spraying them with water.

“There was nothing we could have done, we just stood there,” she said.

Daphne remembers one time when an American plane was approaching.

She identified it as an American plane but, for reasons unknown to them, it wasn’t signalling as it should have.

She was instructed to give the order to shoot the plane.

“We were obligated to shoot him down,” she said, although it wasn’t without a bit of disagreement on her part she added.

When asked if it bothered her to be giving such orders, Daphne said it was either shoot the enemy or know they would drop a bomb on England. Again, she said it was part of their duty to serve their country.

Shifts were long, the job stressful and Daphne was still a young woman. She spoke of a time when her commanding officer told her to get some rest. She returned to her upper bunk, after a particularly long shift, in the Nissen hut and promptly fell asleep.

She awoke to someone frantically shaking her bunk. When she looked around almost the entire hut was destroyed by a doodlebug but she hadn’t heard a thing.

Eventually, after D-Day, Daphne was sent to Belgium where her unit took over plane-spotting from the British marines.

The Germans were just across a wide canal from their position.

“The German’s were retreating at this point, but they lobed a bomb into our gun pit,” she said.

“I was returning to the cook house when the bomb went off and I was blown through a window.” see PAGE A14

from A13 Her wrist was injured and after a trip to a local British field hospital, Daphne returned to her duties.

“All of us accepted that we could be gone in an instant or sent home permanently disabled,” she said matter-of-factly.

After Germany surrendered, Daphne and her unit were returned to Bruge, Belgium where they were given the job of sorting through what was called the dead mail. She spoke and read a little German so she would determine where the mail had come from and where it was going, gleaning any information about the conditions in the country, thus indicating where Allied aid should be sent.

This would be the last of her services to her country.

One of her brothers was in the service in India guarding the Kyber Pass against the advancing German Army into Russia. He was married and had a son there, but after his wife died he brought his young son back to Bedford and Daphne took sick leave to look after her nephew. Another brother, who served in Berma, was interred in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. When he also returned home, Daphne spent time looking after him as he was in very bad shape with several life-threatening conditions including

beriberi, a nutritionbased deficiency in Vitamin B1.

After recuperation, she travelled with that brother back to Malaysia.

Finally, it was time to consider her civilian career and Daphne chose nursing, training in Middlesex Hospital in London.

While working in the Stoke-Mandeville Hospital, in Aylesbury, she met her future husband, a Croatian-born orderly Steve Martin.

“He looked after my brother until he passed away in Steve’s arms,” she said.

“My brother had been in the hospital for about year.”

Looking towards their future, in 1954 the couple were sponsored by another of Daphne’s brothers who lived in Vancouver and they emigrated.

Steve worked in the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and Daphne secured a job with B.C. Tel as an operator.

“I didn’t have my nursing papers so that was the job I found,” she said.

In 1956, Steve was offered a job and a house on the Experimental Farm in Smithers and the couple were on the move again.

Their first two children were born there and Daphne returned to nursing, with Steve looking after the children when she was on

A move to Trail for a job in a planer mill for Steve, another child and Daphne nursing was the next chapter of their life.

The Martin’s moved to Quesnel where Steve finished his career at Cariboo Pulp and Paper. They never regretted emigrating.

Daphne was quick to say Canada has been very good to them.

“I love Canada,” she said with a big smile.

After nearly sixty years, Daphne’s only been back to England once in the 1990s with one of her daughters but admitted she didn’t like the country anymore.

“Everything was old and musty and all the windows are too small,” she said.

Now 88 years old, Daphne remembers the war years vividly and although she doesn’t credit her life as remarkable, her stories and pictures tell another tale.

Small Town Love pilot program a big success Small Town Love has been officially unveiled with roaring success in six communities across the region. In July, Northern Development Initiative Trust partnered with the District of Logan Lake, the District of Fort St. James, the District of 100 Mile House, the District of Vanderhoof, the Village of Valemount and the Village of Burns Lake to deliver a unique marketing campaign that celebrates locallyowned independent businesses with an aim to strengthen their competitiveness and keep more dollars in the local economy.

Since then, more than 200 locally owned independent businesses in those six communities have signed on to have their products and stories featured through unique community web portals. The portals – Love Logan Lake, Love Fort St. James, Love 100 Mile House, Love Vanderhoof, Love Valemount and Love Burns Lake – feature first-rate photography, storytelling and a variety of local businesses in each community that range from bakeries and coffee shops, to gift stores, salons, quilters and health food stores.

Each of the web portals features a search bar and directory function to quickly find businesses online, plus a map function that helps residents and tourists to the community locate and visit each business with ease.

The Small Town Love program will be celebrated in each of the six communities this month with launch parties. The parties are free to attend, feature appetizers, door prizes and more. Residents and community visitors are encouraged to attend each of the parties.

Small Town Love was launched as a pilot program designed to promote small business in communities with populations of 5,000 or less.

The pilot program is a partnership between Northern Development and entrepreneur Amy Quarry, who created and launched the original “Small Town Love” buy-local initiative in the City of Quesnel. With more than 50 local Quesnel-based businesses working collaboratively under the “Small Town Love” marketing brand, Quarry’s original program was extremely well received and highly successful.

“Seeing the enthusiasm and creativity of the people who have partnered with us to bring Small Town Love to their communities has been very inspiring,” Amy Quarry, founder, Small Town Love said.

“We had an overwhelming response from the business community, which speaks to the heart and soul of these communities. I am very proud of these projects and I’m excited to continue delivering Small Town Love to more communities throughout the region.”

Given the success of the pilot program, Northern Development anticipates that Small Town Love will be expanded in 2014 and available to communities with populations of 5,000 or less throughout Northern Development’s service region.

The next edition of the Quesnel Small Town Love guide will be released in December. There are 100 businesses participating. The coupons will be be valid starting Jan. 1, 2014 and a book launch party planned for January 11, 2014.

Laughter and calls to sweep filled the curling club last weekend as local curlers gathered at the annual ice breaker.

Saturday, 16 teams vied for the chance to play in the finals. At the end of many epic battles, six teams lived to move on to the highest

tier of non-competitive curling in Quesnel – the finals.

Dana Johnson and her band of cackling curlers, Wilma Thomson as Third, Ivan Harris as second and Elsie Gilbert on lead, scuttled the Sarabyn rink's plans for curling domination to the tune of 7-2 in the A event.

The Sarabyn Rink gave up three in the first and

was forced to take one in the second. Johansen went on to take two more in the third for a 5-1 lead. The Johansen Rink kept the pressure on through the sixth until Sarabyn shook hands and called it a day.

In the B event, Gord Reid's rink saw their dreams of winning snatched away, 10-3 when all was said and done, by Brady Waffle, who was backed by Norm

Redden in third, Donna Kilsby in second and Selena Gook as the lead.

Brady drew for three in the first, then stole two in the second and two in the third for a 7-0 lead. Reid got three in the fourth, but gave up three in the fifth, convincing him to shake hands and leave the field of battle.

Learning the difference between black and white

ob Deane’s Black Belt Academy is the first club I didn’t enter cold, with wide eyes and a slightly confused look on my face. Well, I probably still had the slightly confused look on my face, but that’s normal for me when dealing with something new.

Joel Kolenchuk, the head instructor of the academy, knows how hard it is to enter a room full of skilled people with a head full of nothing but hopes and dreams, especially for children who will stand there with wide eyes, feeling out of place and often enough end up crying. To combat the shock, Kolenchuk invites all new students to come in for 15 minutes to get familiar with the school, basic skills and the language the teachers use.

Bear clings to top; Serenity set on fire

fter losing in a shoot-out last week, Bear decided to turn the page as they ruined a BCS Cinderella story with a 5-4 victory.

Thanks to the poor ice in front of the BCS cage, Daniel (Tiger) Lowndes was provided with three glorious opportunities which he turned into his first hat trick of the year.

With their captain showing the way, the Bear defence quickly jumped to attention as Chris (Haymitch) Hayman collected a pair of assists and then watched in awe as Derek (Dangle) Kitamura pulled off the move of the year that had BCS jock straps exploding in unison as he scored his first of the decade. Yes, I know that’s the complaint of every writer but we truly do have a lot of choice today. And the quality of vehicles is so much higher than it ever was so there is much to celebrate.

In the run-up to 2014, I will be testing a lot of what’s new and improved.

Today, I’ll just offer you five models to consider adding to your shopping list.

2014 Mazda3 The compact car segment

in Canada is the biggest by far, with over 20 percent of all vehicles sold. So, the introduction of the Mazda3 is important because it is currently the fourth best seller in this class.

The outgoing car was already one of the best handling cars and now with a lighter and sexier looking body, this new car is both eye catching and solid on the road. The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 155hp, thanks to direct injection. The larger 2.5L

engine puts out a healthy 184hp. It is the interior buyers will care most about, and the Mazda3 is a nice surprise, due to class leading available options and a high level of finish. Starting at $15,995 and running up to $29,895, there is a Mazda3 for all budgets.

2014 Toyota Corolla Continuing with the compact car theme, the Toyota Corolla is the third best selling car in Canada but Toyota believes this new model can take the overall

sales crown away from the Honda Civic. This new 2014 model is made, and partly designed, right here in Canada with our needs in mind.

The Corolla now has a longer wheelbase for amazing interior space, especially in the back seat. The dash is wide and flat for ample room and covered in nice looking and feeling materials, plus there is an available centre screen to use for the radio and backup camera. Powering the 2014 Corolla is the same 132hp 1.8L engine from the last model, with one exception.

The LE Eco model has a modified valve system to improve fuel economy and pump the power to 140hp.

The biggest change is the introduction of a continuously variable transmission for a greater range of gears, improved economy, and a smooth drive.

2014 Nissan Rogue You might notice a trend with my 2014 model choices are all compact cars or compact SUVs. This is the direction Canadians are heading when it comes to buying a new vehicle. With this in mind Nissan has an all-new Rogue compact SUV with enough room inside for three rows of seats and room for 7-passengers.

This is practical for people who require extra capacity but don’t want to buy a bigger or more expensive midsized or larger SUV. Under the hood is a 2.5L 4-cylinder used in other Nissan products and is matched to a new continually variable transmission featuring more available ratios and reduced friction. Those who adhere to this unwritten ‘rule’ annoy those behind and hold up the flow of traffic. It is especially annoying when so many larger BC centres have intersections large enough to accommodate two and often three vehicles.
