A number of artists were saluted Saturday night at Element Club, Bar and Grill in Castlegar before a performance by acclaimed talk-rocker Shane Koyzcan.

The occasion was the annual awards gala for the increasingly popular Castlegar Sculpturewalk.

A selection of 50 works were featured in this year’s event. Picking up the coveted People’s Choice Award was Douglas Walker of Black Creek on Vancouver Island, for his work enti-

tled “Honkfest” which has been on display in front of Castlegar City Hall.

The artist spoke gratefully of the ongoing program following his win, stressing how much he and the other artists appreciate their reception by walk organizers.

“They treat us like gold when we get here,” he said. “They cover some expenses for us, put us up in hotels if we need it.

“I especially want to thank my business partner and wife, who isn’t here tonight. Behind every semi-successful art-

ist there’s a somebody with a really good job.”

I built the fountain originally for a show on Granville Island in Vancouver, so three or four hundred thousand people saw the sculpture before it got here.

And when they decided to do a fountain for this year’s Sculpturewalk, I thought, ‘This is the one.’” (This version of Honkfest has been modified somewhat from the example that appeared at Granville Island.)

Many others have obviously felt the same, hence the major award, $3,000 cash prize and the

sale to the City of Castlegar where the work will remain in perpetuity.

Walker feels pretty good about his ongoing connection with Castlegar that has been created.

“It’s truly amazing that a community can put this together,” he concluded, “because it’s nowhere else in Canada. There are very few places where you can do something like this, in North America, let alone Canada. I’m very proud to have this piece here.”

Alex Atamanenko announced last week he will work as hard as ever as NDP Member of Parliament for the riding of British Columbia Southern Interior “right up to the next election” in 2015. But he will not run for re-election after three terms in office, having first been elected in 2006.

I had the opportunity to interview this Member of Parliament last Friday, November 1, and asked him about his retirement and his opinion on some current issues.

His reason for retirement is, “Its time, my age, I will be 70 in two years. Already been in politics for ten years, its time to go.”

Has he any particular plans

for retirement? Fishing?

“No plans right now, this is still a long way away. I plan to continue working right up to the next election, I am still working. I guess I will have more time playing music, more time to the pool.”

What have been his highlights? “I don’t know if there has been any highlights, I think its just that I

have met so many interesting and committed people, worked with them on so many causes, on social justice. My work in the whole area of food sovereignty, that time I crisscrossed Canada trying to get some feedback on a national food policy could be considered highlights. There have been so many worthwhile causes that I have been able to tap into and work with people on.”

Any negative events that deserved mentioning? “Right now, of course, this isn’t an easy time with this majority government just ramming through whatever he wants to do. There is limited discussion and no amendments are accepted. Apparently it is not like majority governments of the past, so

it is not easy working with them. It is very difficult.”

Anything to say on the Senate scandal? “We are going to see how this is played out.

Its not looking good for the Prime Minister that’s for sure.”

Does he feel the Senate should be abolished or reformed? “I am leaning towards the abolishment, I think its pretty tough to reform that is for sure.”

Is he a proponent of proportional representation? Yes, he says, and adds, “That’s important! We’ve got to work on that. Its going to be a major part of our platform the next election.

“We have to get some system of proportional representation. It is working in other countries that’s for sure.”

Council hears Rotary park pitch jim sinclair Castlegar News Editor

City Council briefs Two delegations were on the agenda to kick off the regular meeting of Castlegar’s City Council on Monday, Nov. 4 right after newly installed Deputy Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio was officially welcomed to duty in his new post.

The first of the delegations was made up of Rick and Donna Smith on behalf of the Pass Creek Regional Exhibition Society.

It was an upbeat presentation delivered by the Smiths, citing both past and current successes and asserting the value and popularity of the annual community event.

Used as an example of what the society and community can strive toward, was the highlight of the calendar in Armstrong, BC – the Interior Provincial Exhibition, second only to Vancouver’s Pacific National Exhibition in stature.

“Armstrong,” explained Rick Smith, “with a population of 4,500 draws about 75,000 to its weekend fair.”

Closer to home, the Rock Creek Fall Fair is another well-run event that the local fair can emulate, according to the Smiths, although such attractions as a midway are not in the local plans.

In terms of popular aspects of the Pass Creek party, Donna mentioned the Dirty Diggers program as especially well-enjoyed by all ages.

An ambitious project with what appears to be good potential was described by a twoman delegation representing Castlegar’s two Rotary Clubs.

and a wealth of information regarding amenities hoped to become a reality at Twin Rivers Park.

On the drawing board is a concession, a shelter designed to accommodate up to 150 people and a storage facility for the local soccer association, which, incidentally is joining with the Rotarians in working for the improvements.

“The idea came in looking at the development of the park (Millennium Ponds Project). We saw some needs we felt were being missed,” said Kravski following the meeting. “We thought this would be an interesting project to undertake.”

An attractive and proven model exists in the area, as Ross outlined.

“We looked at Birchbank (park) and we really liked the concept. That’s sort of what we’re planning to do in our park.”

The plan is to create an enjoyable and useful space for gatherings – picnics, weddings, etc., usable when the weather is wet or very hot.

Commerical grade cooking facilities are apparently part of the scheme.

Council appeared receptive to the idea. To go ahead, a number of details would need

sorting out, in particular, who would operate it?

The men presented three price estimates to council, from a high of $330,000 for a “full, turn key” facility. Ross continued, “We think doing it the Rotary way… staging it, using some volunteer labour, and scrounging some materials, we could get it down to around a quarter million.”

Responding to a recent letter (topic also broached in the Castlegar News) in regard to perceived safety concerns with Mountain Training Institute, a professional driver’s school, a staff report was called for by council last month.

The institute, MTI, was studied and upon staff investigation, city staff was advised of the following: “They have made it clear to their instructors to stay away from all streets near schools in the morning and afternoon.

And, the students do not drive within city limits until they have learnt the correct shifting techniques.”

It was also revealed that city staff had contacted the ICBC Road Test Examiner Supervisor, who “indicated that MTI pass rates are high and they strive to stay out of residential areas during the actual road test.”

51 weeks to go It’s a good thing dogs don’t understand calendars, if they did, their anxiety and fear would kick in well ahead of Halloween, when, for all-too-many of them, it does now.

Robson is home to a lot of firecracker and roman candle fans, they love them at any time but, of course, Halloween is the best time for recreational explosives.

Some of us make a point of not being home on Halloween night, it’s a great way to prevent the irritation. But for some, like the pair of pooches losing their minds in a yard nearby, the onslaught of powerful firecrackers is nothing short of blatant, scheduled cruelty.

The next-door neighbours’ little dog has yet to get over the horror of the whistling / exploding projectiles that go so far beyond the idea of some harmless fun. Cats, birds, horses, sheep, and any wild animal you can think of would be equally grateful to be rid of the Oct. 31 “boom show.”

A request to the bombers... please do it in your own basement. What? Hearing damage?… fire hazard? Do you... think?

For those who can’t live without ear shattering noise... that’s what headphones are for.

A request to local/regional government and the commercial sector – let’s think about doing something to reduce, and eventually eliminate this inconsiderate tradition. It’s been done in other communities with great success, all it took was enough folks deciding it was time to do it.

Skateboard Park Success The 10 year anniversary of the Castlegar Skateboard Park earlier this autumn was significant in the history of our community. These years have been good for youngsters growing up and wanting to be active with their boards, bikes, and scooters. But it has also been good for parents who over the years have had an accessible place to take their kids.

On occasion, there were a few problems with the behavior of some riders and rowdies showing up to cause trouble. However, Friends of the Skateboard Park and others realized that if such things continued, the skateboard park might be shut down. This group of community members, the RCMP, Freedom Quest, the Recreation Complex, Kootenay Family Place, and a few older teens worked hard to make the skateboard park a positive place.

Not all of this was anticipated by Castlegar’s two Rotary clubs a dozen years ago as they began planning to build a skateboard park. Their aim was to provide another place for young people to develop skills and participate in sports activities. They hoped to move the young boarders from parking lots and store fronts to one site near the Recreation Complex.

and the City of Castlegar and raising funds from local projects, the two Rotary clubs built the park during a single summer. Rotarians believe in handson work projects, and so they hauled gravel, wheeled cement, and laid pipes on a voluntary basis. Then contractors were brought in to do the rest of the work and to finish the skateboard park.

All of this would not have happened if it had not been for now deceased, long-time Rotarian Jack Chernoff.

During the summer of skateboard park construction, he spent hundreds of hours shaping it. He directed the Rotary volunteers, took advice from young skateboarders, and oversaw the entire operation. When funds ran short, he pressed Rotarians and the community to come up with more dollars.

When the skateboard park was complete, Rotary placed its identifying wheel on the site, but it really could have been called the “Jack Chernoff Skateboard Park.” He simply had that ability to get a project off the ground, to mobilize volunteers, and to see the work through to its end.

One of the early worries in the community was that the skateboard park would become a target for sprayed-on obscenities and graphic drawings. And though there has been a bit of graffi-

ti, it has been quickly dealt with by the maintenance staff from the Recreation Complex. In contrast to skateboard parks in many communities, ours is still in good condition.

Three years ago, skateboard enthusiast, Ty Smith, working with Kootenay Family Place, set up skateboard training at the park. They were able to deliver these lessons Monday to Friday all summer because of grants from British Columbia Gaming and with the support of management at the recreation complex. Mostly, skateboarders learn by trial and error, and so it was good to have highly-skilled boarders giving them lessons.

By 2012, Smith had acquired accredited status as a skateboard coach, and in 2013, Columbia Basin Trust came on board as a granting partner. This past summer, two accredited instructors and one youth were delivering instruction in skateboard techniques and skate park etiquette at Castlegar’s skateboard park.

This program is one of only a very few training programs available at skateboard parks across Canada. In fact, this skateboard program is the only one anywhere that provides equipment for boarders and instructs them free of charge.

The Castlegar Chamber of Commerce would like to have clarified that we most definitely had a representative from our board of directors attend the CBT symposium.

I’ll bet that Castlegar’s past mayor Audrey Moore, herself a founding member of the Columbia Basin Trust and -so I heard -- still a member of the Chamber, is happy with the ongoing part it’s playing in breaking down parochialism in the Basin.

And I still hope our City leadership follows suit next time around, alerting councillors to upcoming CBT events and planning for our City to participate, collaborate, and be represented.

I wish to thank Councillor McIntosh for bringing this to the attention of the mayor and council for discussion and possible resolution.

I have witnessed one incident which further raised my concern and I noted two more incidents have been registered in the Thanks and Spanks column.

I ask that Mountain Training Institute voluntarily stop using the residential streets of North Castlegar as part of their test training route in the interest of public safety.

It is my hope that raising this issue at the onset of winter conditions will provide an opportunity to correct this issue before a more serious issue occurs.

I raise this issue now because by remaining silent, I become part of the problem.

The government also signed an agreement this week with western U.S. states called the Pacific Coast Collaborative, to extend efforts to put a regional price on carbon. California has launched its own cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions, and B.C. continues to administer a carbon tax on fossil fuels imposed in 2006.

B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak signed the agreement in San Francisco with Washington Governor Jay Inslee, Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber and California Governor Jerry Brown.

Kitzhaber said more than 500,000 people on the North American west coast now work in green economy jobs, and the region will lead the way in the future.

“We are here to reject the myth that jobs and the environment are in conflict,” he said.

Meanwhile, B.C. continues its central effort, to develop liquefied natural gas exports to Asia.

The province has exempted greenhouse gas emissions used to process and export LNG, arguing that it will displace coal in China and other countries with a less emission-intensive fuel.

Dealing With Chronic Pain

By Anna McCullagh, Reg. Massage Therapist Many people live with chronic pain in their lives.

Chronic pain is considered to be any pain that lasts longer than 6 months, it can be episodic, meaning it comes and goes with no rhyme or reason, or it can be constant. For each individual that suffers from chronic pain there is a different story to why they feel it. whether its an old hockey injury from 20 years ago or from working at a desk job on a computer; a person could have undergone a resent surgery or have an underlying condition such as fibromyalgia or scoliosis (a side curvature of the spine).

Insomnia, anxiety and stress (like the worry that you’ll never feel pain free again or get a good nights sleep) are all side effects of pain. In some cases people find it hard to identify with their pain-free past and are not able to enjoy the same quality of life they once had.

Massage therapy has been know to decrease the amount of pain someone can be feeling by treating

the muscle, joint or specific area that is painful all while working with the individuals pain tolerance.

Massage can help the body as a whole by decreasing the sympathetic nervous system activity (in charge of the “fight or flight” response) leading to a better sleep and decreased stress.

Self care such as stretching, strengthening or ever, simply drinking more water are all important aspects of treating injuries or chronic pain. Water intake is important for the cells that make up our body, they need water to function properly. 2 litres of water per day is recommended but should be increased with strenuous activity or in hotter climates. Being well hydrated has been known to decrease headaches and increase muscle and joint function. Stretching is not only great for the musculoskletal system, but because of the slower nature of it there is time to relax and listen to what your body is doing.

A strong body not only helps in the present but as a body ages a loss of muscle mass and strength occurs, so it’s nice to have a strong base line.

As each case of chronic pain is different you can imagine that each individual will respond differently to various therapies; be it either chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, physiotherapy etc.

The paramount element being that the individual seeking help must take control and responsibility for their healthcare. So remember to drink more water, stretch, strengthen and take control!

Keeping bees buzzing in the Kootenays submitted

While we rarely see them, honeybees spend their days buzzing from flower to flower, collecting nectar and moving pollen from one plant to the next. As honeybees quietly go about their business they act as the primary pollinators for 1/3 of food crops throughout the world. In British Columbia, agricultural production from crops pollinated by honeybees in 2008 had an estimated annual value of $160 million. Unfortunately, an unprecedented decline in global honeybee populations has recently been earning widespread media attention. This decline is particularly alarming to farmers, some of whom rely exclusively on the insects to pollinate their crops.

A single cause has not been identified for the honeybees’ problems, but a combination of factors that weaken and stress the bees is likely to blame. Globally, the parasitic varroa mite, agricultural pesticide use, undue

Considering the variety of businesses and educational opportunities that focus on bees, it is evident that people in the Kootenays have a genuine interest in contributing to a healthy, local agriculture system that protects and enhances honeybee populations and habitat.

However, even with the good buzz, not all local governments have jumped on board. Bylaws in Castlegar and Nelson do not permit beehives to be kept within city limits. Kaslo allows beehives, but only if electrical fencing is used to deter curious animals from getting too

close. Recently, public pressure and efforts to create “greener” cities have pushed cities such as Vancouver and Seattle to create bylaws supporting urban beekeepers.

Hopefully local municipalities will begin to recognize the value of honeybees within city limits and follow suit.

While it may continue to be the case that you are not be permitted to keep beehives on your property, you can

• Plant native, not exotic, flower species – bees are more likely to visit flowers with which they have evolved.

• Ensure food is available all season – plant a variety of flowers that bloom throughout the spring and summer.

• Plant flowers in clusters – bees are more apt to visit a dense patch of flowers than a single flower.

If we all do our part, we can keep honeybee populations healthy and local food on our plates.

Pass Creek Road section gets a fresh face derek kaye Castlegar News Contributor

After weeks of road construction and slope stabilization, the sharpest curve in the Castlegar side of Pass Creek Road has received a straightening and widening.

The curve before construction was extremely sharp and narrow, with evidence of downward motion of a quarter of the surface width of the road involved in the geotechnical process called “slope creep.” The surface had significant cracking.

With Pass Creek growing in development, perhaps at times slowly, the road traffic has nonetheless increased significantly over the last 20 years, while all the time maintaining light industrial use by logging trucks, heavy equipment transportation and such.

After contacting the City, (who laughed good naturedly COMPLEX at my odd request) they put me in touch with the company that removed items like Grimm from the city streets, arrangements were made to collect my Grimm. The only condition was that I had to take both of them. I readily agreed and rescued Grimm and his new friend from dangers unknown.

The kids were joyous and yes I was the heroine of Halloween. But the real reason for this article is to the thieves of Halloween… please … before you steal decorations please

think of the families that decorate their yards for the enjoyment of their families, kids, neighbours and trick or treaters. The theft and vandalism that you are causing leaves, not only a hole in the pocket book but a sour taste in mouths of the children and families you steal from.

We will be putting our ‘good’ decorations away at night, a tiresome task for sure, but would rather take some extra measures than lose our favoured props again. We would also be happy to return Grimm’s new ‘friend’ to the rightful owner - should they be missing their Grimm as much as we would have.

The Selkirk College Saints recorded a 6-0 shutout over Trinity Western University on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Castlegar Community Complex.

At the 10:25 mark. Forward Cody Fidgett beat Trinity’s starter Harry Fredeman from in front on a quick wrister on a nice pass from Logan Proulx and then, just 22 seconds after the restart, he was beat again when Garrett Kucher went tape-to-tape to Darnell Dyck.

The Saints almost capitalized minutes later when Scott Swiston, who had been off for cross-checking, joined the rush out of the box and just about converted a third goal.

In the second period, the pipes around Fredeman helped contain the Saints, but only slightly. A total of three clanged off the posts and crossbar for the Saints in the period, as they applied steady pressure all over the ice.

Goalie Chris Hurry, starting in goal for Selkirk, was sharp on the 23 shots he faced. including tracking the puck nicely in close, stopping a cute passing play at the side of his net when Trinity Western was on the first of two power play opportunities in the period.

A frustrated Trinity team appeared out of sorts and slightly disorganized at times in the middle frame. When Micah Cockrill started engaging Saints at both ends of he ice, officials stepped in more

than once to ensure hockey was played and cooler heads prevailed.

What didn’t cool down was the offensive play by the Saints.

At 8:25 Fidgett was again the recipient of a perfect pass from Proulx who made no mistake on his second of the night all alone in front of the Spartans net.

A scant 42 second later, Proulx notched his third and final point of the night on the Saints fourth goal. Shorthanded, he delivered to Dyck at the top of the circle, whose controlled slap shot whistled into the twine. With four goals and nine assists, Proulx’s 13 points have him just two back of Thompson Rivers University’s Joshua MacDonald in the points race.

After 40 minutes, the 4-0 lead remained intact and they went to the dressing room knowing they were going to start the third with a 1:29 man advantage after Trevor Beaupre went off late for tripping. While the Saints didn’t convert on that opportunity, Mason Spear poked in a loose puck while on the power play at 7:39 — Fidgett factored in on the scoring again with an assist on the play — and the Saints were in full cruise mode with a five-goal lead.

The sizeable crowd was rooting for a hat-trick from either Fidgett or Dyck and the latter happily obliged with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation.

“We headed into tonight’s

game off a couple of losses and our whole group came out prepared to dictate the speed and tempo of the game,” said Saints head coach Jeff Dubois in a release. “TWU is a hard-working team that can be very difficult to break down defensively, and even when you do they’ve got one of the top goalies in the league to stop the puck. Tonight we made some skilled plays, but we were also tough to defend in how we moved our feet and cycled the puck.

It’s really how we need to play night in, night out to be successful on a consistent basis.”

The shutout was Hurry’s second of the season and he is now ranked second in the BCIHL with a 1.67 GAA and 0.936 SV %. On the other side, Fredeman faced 53 shots.

The win was the fifth straight for the Saints at home this season.

“Getting wins at home is something that we pride ourselves on,” said Dubois. “We have great fans and the guys very much appreciate and feed off of the energy in the building on game nights. There’s certainly an extra motivation to perform when you’re receiving such tremendous support.”

Selkirk and TWU will face off again on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.) at the Langley Events Centre. Both games can be viewed online at www.FastHockey.com.

The Saints’ next home game is on Saturday, Nov. 16 against Simon Fraser University (7:30 p.m.)

Pete P. Kabatoff was born on June 28th, 1927 in the community of Ootischenia, to Pete S. and Helen N. Kabatoff. Pat was a little brother to sister Tannis (Zoobkoff) and later would become a big brother to Eleanor (Repin), Ann (Zaytsoff), and his aunt Vera (Zaitsoff) who lived in the Kabatoff household and was considered more a sibling than an aunt.

On October 14th, 1949, Pat married Anna Lazareff of Grand Forks. They shared 59 years of marriage. Together, Pat and Anna raised three children – sons Walter and Jack and daughter Verna.

Pat’s career focused on carpentry – private and commercial buildings. Employers included P&G Building Supply, Creighton Construction, Oglow Brothers, and Mike Semenoff. Pat was a member of Local 2300 of the Carpenters Union for 48 years.

Being a master carpenter he was called upon often in the Ootischenia community in building many of the homes. When the Ootischenia Hall was purchased, Pat, along with John Obetkoff and others, played a big role in moving it to where it is now located.

Upon retirement from carpentry, Kabatoff Sand & Gravel was born. This was a long time dream of Pat’s. He spent countless hours managing the day to day operations.

On the homefront, the young Kabatoff family spent holidays traveling. Their special destinations included Radium Hot Springs, Doukhobor events in Saskatchewan, and the Calgary Stampede. Favourite pastimes involved spending time with their grandchildren, gardening and travel. Pat and Anna travelled to many destinations together – including Russia, Cuba, Mexico and the United States.

On Sunday, October 27th, 2013, Pat passed away peacefully at the Castleview Care Centre at the age of 86.
