Mitsubishi will unveil three world premiere concept cars later this month at the 43rd Tokyo Motor Show.

The AR concept (left) is a next-generation compact MPV, which combines SUV maneuverability with MPV roominess. It uses a lightweight mild hybrid system, which comprises a downsized 1.1-litre direct-injection turbocharged MIVEC engine.

The GC-PHEV (centre) is a full-size SUV with full-time 4WD. It is based on a front engine; rear-wheel drive layout plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) system comprising a 3.0-litre V6 supercharged MIVEC engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a high-output motor and a high-capacity battery to deliver all-terrain performance.

The compact XR-PHEV (right) uses a front engine, front-wheel drive layout PHEV system configured with a downsized 1.1-litre direct-injection turbocharged MIVEC engine, a lightweight, compact and high-efficiency motor with a high-capacity battery.

All three concepts feature "e-Assist" active safety technologies and the advanced "connected car" technology. These functions include a danger detection system, which activates the corresponding safety functions.

Green car journal to reveal winner at Green Car Journal has identified its five finalists for the magazine’s high-profile 2014 Green Car of the Year program.

The five 2014 models include the Audi A6 TDI, BMW 328d, Honda Accord, Mazda3, and Toyota Corolla. These five finalists are also honoured as Green Car Journal’s “Top 5 Green Cars for 2014” and earn the magazine’s “Green Car Product of Excellence” honors.

An increasing number of vehicle models are considered for the program each year, a reflection of the auto industry’s expanding efforts in offering new vehicles with higher efficiency and improved environmental impact. Green Car Journal has been honouring the most important “green” vehicles every year at the LA Auto Show, since its inaugural award announced at the show in 2005.

“The diversity of this field of finalists illustrates not only that ‘green’ has gone mainstream, but also that there is no single approach to achieving ever higher levels of fuel efficiency and environmental performance,” says Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. “There’s something for everyone in this year’s field of finalists, including clean diesel, high efficiency gasoline, and hybrid/ plug-in hybrid power featured in mainstream, sporty, and executive models.”

Finalists are selected for their achievements in raising the bar in environmental performance. For nearly 62 years, Dolores Kirkwood has been fostering a love of dance among the children of British Columbia.

A teacher, choreographer and adjudicator, she has influenced thousands of people as one of Western Canada’s foremost experts on ballet and musical theatre. She has given of herself, her talents and her humanity to countless thousands of students.

She has travelled all over the province to assist with musical productions at high schools, as well as community theatre groups. Her work at Burnaby South High School inspired many other schools to get involved in school musicals. She choreographed musicals at Terry Fox Senior Secondary for 25 years and for 21 Dolores Kirkwood years, she has been artistic director of the Royal City Youth Ballet Company.

Ms. Kirkwood has been honoured as New Westminster’s Citizen of the Year, won the Sam Payne Award for nourishing young talent, and in 1996 was admitted to BC’s Entertainment Hall of Fame.

A few days in an S4 recently on a deserted highspeed highway south of the border spoiled me. The supercharged 3-litre TFSI V6 pumps out 333 horses and, with the aid of sixspeed manual dual-clutch transmission, pushes the all-wheel drive S4 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds.

It’s not just about performance: the leather interior is beautifully crafted and comfy to boot, which is not always the case with some of today’s leather upholstered cars.

Infiniti is an unabashed fan of Audi, in fact its brass frequently talk publicly about wanting to emulate the high standard set across its range by the German manufacturer. Now it’s looking to pass Lexus and tailgate the big three German premium brands.

The Infiniti Q50 is the first evidence that this is not some idle threat. It has the fingerprints of four-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel on it though, I am told, not nearly as many dabs as the highly-anticipated Q30 due later next year.

Drives-U-Crazy Intersection Idiots A myth abounds among self-righteous, over-cautious drivers that only one left-turning car at a time is permitted to enter an intersection on a green light.

Those who adhere to this unwritten ‘rule’ annoy those behind and hold up the flow of traffic.

It is especially annoying when so many larger BC centres have intersections large enough to accommodate two and often three vehicles.
