12th Annual Brown’s Bay Chum Derby

The weather was ideal for the annual Chum Derby at Brown’s Bay Oct. 18-20 and it brought the anglers out for a good day of fishing, socializing and enjoying a weekend on the water. This year there were a lot of new faces and 665 fish were brought in by 541 anglers. Ryan Brown won the derby with a chum weighing in at 19.7 pounds.

Anglers come to the event from all over the mainland and Vancouver Island. on Sunday, Oct. 20, the main attraction was the events tent where all the prizes were awarded.

This year the Chum derby had 60 sponsors and the recipient charity is Greenways Land trust.

Megan Bond came all the way from Vancouver to participate in the derby. It appears that trip wasn’t wasted.

Ryan Brown (left) is presented with the winner’s plaque and $1,000 cash from Esther Holling of Brown’s Bay for hauling in the winning salmon of the derby, a 19.7-pounder.

Aaron Baxandall of Courtenay came out for his third Chum Derby. Three times three.

Greenways Land Trust was the beneficiary of this year’s Chum Derby and it received $8,300 as a result of the event.

I, Barbara Balon, am writing on behalf of my mother, Doris Page who recently purchased an Iron Man bed with a recovery foam mattress from your store. First of all we would like to thank you for the wonderful service. I had phoned all over to the different furniture stores in town looking for a single bed where the head and feet raise and lower and a good mattress. They needed to have one in the store and we needed it to be delivered on the same day. This, I realize is a lot to ask of any store but we were desperate.

Mo mom hasn’t had a good night’s sleep going on two or three years. She is up about every half hour going to the washroom. We found that while sitting in an upright position during the day she could go five ours without having to use the facility, hence we realized that when she was laying flat in bed there was pressure put on her bladder. She also has an essential tremor and the only time she isn’t shaking is when she is asleep. As a result of her being up so many times at night, she was constantly exhausted and her tremor was causing her to lose a tremendous amount of weight.

Your store was the only that could meet all our requirements. The Iron Man bed was purchased and I am happy to say that Mom has had the best sleep she has had for three years. Thank you all at this store for giving our mom quality back in her life. A good night’s sleep is exactly what she needed.

badminton-sized court with the net about two inches lower than a tennis net. The ball is a small polymer version of a wiffle ball so it does not travel too fast when hit by a wooden paddle (or racquet).

At a recent pickleball session at the Comox Community Centre, the action was fast and furious as doubles teams volleyed the ball back and forth across the net.

One of the participants was Jane Austin, the membership chair for Zone 2 of the BC Seniors Games Society. She noted the game is ideally suited to the Valley’s wet winter months when being indoors and having fun beats being outdoors and battling the elements.

Austin was one of several Comox Valley competitors who excelled in the sport at the 2013 Seniors Games in Kamloops.

She won silver in women’s singles and teamed with husband Bob to win silver in mixed doubles.

Salmon fishing in general on the west coast was on fire. The inside was really strong and the bulk of anglers will be finishing up the Chum Salmon season and boats will be pulled out of the water for storage and maintenance.

Salmon will be smoked canned and eaten fresh.

With the hundreds of lodges around the coast the commercial canneries and smokehouses were very busy. Remember anglers if you have taken fish to a depot there is a procedure and it takes time to get the product back to you.

Those getting out these days fishing are going after winter springs, Coho and bottom fish. Coyote spoons,Tomic plugs and blue Meanie hootchies are working.

Plug sizes this time of year will be smaller than those used in the summer months.

Oyster River Beach fishing for Coho has started in the Campbell River and Courtenay area. The majority of anglers are casting out Buzz Bombs, Zingers and Croks. To my surprise a Mickey Finn fly was working well for an angler fishing the shoreline at Oyster Bay Park.

On the local lakes fishing from shore is worthwhile using Muddlers,nymph flies and a fly that has worked for me on the Campbell River was a Carey special with the body tied in green and the hook a number 6. Wind the brown pheasant hackle past the tail to give it a little length.

The rain will be a welcome sight for beach anglers going after hatchery Coho, the into the rivers, this is fun on the fly for anglers on the Oyster and Campbell River. The Quinsam will be busy on the Pan Size Trout weekends.
