Stettler’s award-winning businesses ‘welcome people to the community’

Stettler citizens and business were honoured during an Oct. 24 awards banquet at the Stettler community hall. The Stettler Regional Board of Trade hosted the five-hour-plus awards ceremony. “The Stettler Regional Board of Trade is a place for business and community members to act on projects that help build community,” said president Joyce Kiryk. Council leaders acknowledged the value of businesses to the area. “It’s important for the community to have good businesses,” said County of Stettler Reeve Wayne Nixon. “They are the first impressions to visitors in the community.”

“We can’t say enough good things about our businesses — they welcome people to the community,” said Town of Stettler Coun. Darcy Bachman. Candace Maruk was named the female citizen of the year, while Garry Kunstman was chosen the male citizen of the year. Other awards were presented to: Business of the year — Metalex Metal Buildings Inc. Small business of the year — Maverick Animal Veterinary Services. Stettler ambassador of the year — Alberta Prairie Railway Excursions. Customer service award — Heartland Medical Clinic and Stettler

Kunstman ‘very overwhelmed’ with selection as male citizen of the year RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter

Garry Kunstman was honoured as Stettler’s male citizen of the year in presentations Oct. 24 at the Stettler Regional Board of Trade awards dinner. “It’s an honour to receive this award,” said Kunstman, who with his wife Gail have been lifetime residents of Stettler. “It’s very overwhelming.” Kunstman has been very active in Stettler as both an entrepreneur and a community supporter. In 1965, he formed Garry Kunstman Construction and through the years, other services were added and businesses were undertaken, including Shelter King steel buildings. Through his companies, he has been able to donate metal buildings for minor soccer, minor baseball, the Stettler Fire Department,

West Stettler Park pond aeration and Heartland Victim Services. Kunstman has been an executive member of Stettler Sabres senior hockey club, Stettler Rifle and Pistol Club and Stettler Lightning junior B hockey team. He has been a strong supporter of the Lightning as an individual supporter and game-day corporate sponsor. His sponsorship extends to supporting free skating at the Stettler Recreation Centre and sponsoring jerseys for minor soccer and baseball teams. The Kunstmans have also been supporters of the Stettler Health Services Foundation golf tournament, which also raises money for Heartland Victim Services. Now retired, Kunstman regularly volunteers for the Stettler and District Food Bank, as he picks up donations and delivers them to the food bank.

Maruk ‘very shocked’ as winner of Stettler’s female citizen of year RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter

Candace Maruk was honoured last week as Stettler’s female citizen of the year. The presentation was made Oct. 24 during the Stettler Regional Board of Trade awards dinner. “It’s a pretty big surprise for me to win,” said Maruk, who moved from Hanna more than 10 years ago to pursue a career and lives in Stettler with her husband Steve Maruk and their three-year-old son Gage. “I’m very shocked to get this, but it’s an honour.” Her nomination briefing for the award mentioned that “Candace is walking proof that no good deed is ever too small.”

“You don’t have to be rich, you don’t have to be grand in your gestures, but every effort in your community is noticed and appreciated,” said her nominator. For her 31st birthday, Candace challenged herself, her family and her friends to perform 31 acts of random kindness — and son Gage was also involved. The results were random acts of kindness throughout Alberta and British Columbia. Those acts included taking a basket of children’s activities to the hospital emergency waiting room. Gage filled candy machines at Wal-Mart with quarters and walked away, leaving a pre-paid surprise for the next child.

“Candace has spread her kindness throughout our community and extended it outward,” her nomination read. This year, Candace and her cousin adopted two High River flood victim families to support while also aiding her family when personal tragedy struck. Candace and her cousin canvassed for funds to purchase much-needed items for the flooded families. “Her support assisted the processes of rebuilding their lives (after the spring floods),” her nomination papers read. Each Christmas, Candace also adopts a local family. She offers assistance with groceries and gifts and directly helps another family celebrate a memorable Christmas.

Stettler: gateway to services close to home Prominent provincial highways and rural routes form a network of entry points into Stettler, regarded as the heart of Alberta. All too often, those passages double as an exit point. In search of greener pastures, so to speak, people leave the region on a daily basis to shop, work or play in other parts of the province — or beyond. While it’s sometimes necessary to go elsewhere for essential health services, and it can be enlightening to visit and explore other communities, there are also many hidden gems close to home. Businesses in the Stettler region run the gamut from the homespun operations that have survived — and flourished — for generations to those representing higher-profile brands with all the trappings of contemporary times. The business community in town needs the support of Stettler-area folks who live, work and raise families in the region. What’s more, those residents need that same healthy economy in their community. A prosperous economic picture contributes to a vibrant town, which Stettler has proven to be for generations. If local people invest in the community, the ripple

SERVING STETTLER AND AREA FOR THE PAST 104 YEARS

effect is enhanced recreational and health facilities, better schools and a greater diversity of shopping and leisure options. But to accomplish those goals, and solidify the longterm population of Stettler, consumers need to practise what many people preach: shop local. At the least, Stettler-area residents need to give local businesses the opportunity to compete for their shopping dollars. Visit and chat with local proprietors to compare what might well be favourable deals. Even in cases where they’re not necessarily the best bargains, the difference still probably beats the cost of a tank of gas for a trip to Red Deer or Camrose in search of an elusive “sale.” As with any town, Stettler banks on the support of its own. While tourists come and go, depending on the season and the attractions, the lifeblood of a healthy economy in town is a thriving business climate generated by the people who live here year-round. The face of downtown Stettler has experienced multiple changes in the past year, as a few businesses have departed and others have set up shop. Those new businesses — and the established operations — deserve local support. — Stettler Independent

Businesses partner to market each other RICHARD FROESE Independent reporter

A group of Stettler businesses has made great strides to work together to promote their businesses and attract new customers. Known as the Stettler Prize Consortia, Kevin Falkenberg of Auto Xtras and Gordon Lawlor and son Mike of Lawlor Jewelry initiated the marketing partnership two years ago. The group, which also includes Auto Trust and Artemis Computers, John’s Clothing, Romar Power Sports, WISH Kitchen and Old-Fashioned Candy, uses the partnership to cross-promote their products and services to each other’s customers. “Typically, the customer is part of a family unit and is interested in more than just the initial purchase,” said Falkenberg, who initiated the project.

“They have a wide variety of needs and wants, and this can help them find what’s already locally available.” This year, the Stettler group hosted two promotional campaigns, which included St. Patrick’s Day highway signage and in-store giveaway cards. “The whole goal is to reach out to other businesses’ customers and inform them about products and services they offer,” Mike Lawlor said. “We want to be cost-effective to get the message out,” Falkenberg said. “With so many options, it’s so hard to measure the effectiveness of advertising.” Collectively, participating businesses also engage their customers using newspaper, radio, websites, online and social media. “Stettler’s reputation for word of mouth to tell about business is im-

peccable,” said Lawlor, who’s optimistic the endeavour will expand with more businesses. “It will grow exponentially.” “We’ve got lots of more interest,” Falkenberg added. Besides marketing, the group also works to build up business in other ways. “We get together regularly to discuss different marketing techniques and make plans for upcoming promotions,” Lawlor said. “One of the other advantages of the group is to talk as business owners and share solutions on common everyday problems,” Falkenberg said. Opportunities for other businesses to join the group with other promotions are planned for the new year. At this year’s Stettler business and citizenship awards ceremony, the Stettler Prize Consortia was recognized with a marketing award.

Local businesses make holidays festive Time is in short supply during the Christmas season. Between the shopping, cooking, baking and wrapping, there seems to be precious few hours to tackle anything else. Those who desire an oldfashioned, homemade holiday can still experience all of the seasonal magic by deferring some of the work to local small businesses. Decorating Much of the splendor of the holiday season comes directly from the intricately decorated houses and storefronts. Twinkling lights and garlands of fresh pine boughs can instantly transform any building. Decorating a home can take an entire day or more, but delegating the work to a decorating service will provide you with professional-looking results as well as free time to tackle other obligations. Decorators can work outdoors stringing lights and creating a winter wonderland in the fraction of the time it takes homeowners to decorate their homes. Local vendors stock unique gifts for the Christmas season.

‘More personalized service and less stressful’ Continued from Page 10 Baking What would the holiday season be without the sweet treats and inviting smells of freshly baked goods? The cooler weather is an ideal time to turn on the oven and whip up a batch of cookies or cakes with the aroma of pungent cinnamon and nutmeg. Others would prefer desserts that provide homemade flair without the effort. Local bakeries experience an upswing in business this time of year as shoppers flock to choose among the pastries, cookies and pies in display cases. Whether a dessert comes directly from your kitchen or that of a local confectionary shop, chances are guests will enjoy each delectable bite. If you have a custom-order dessert in mind, consult with the bakery well in advance to ensure

your dessert will be available when hosting friends and family. Catering Roasts and lavish tables are part of the holiday season, but so are the corporate parties and cocktail events that comprise a social season. Catering a party is an easy way to offer guests delicious food with minimal work. Local caterers can provide everything from sit-down dinners to buffet spreads. Some restaurants that don’t normally cater events may offer special packages this time of year. Different customers are vying for the services of caterers within a small window of time. Parties Social calendars fill up come November and December. When hosting a gathering of co-workers,

family or friends, choose local venues for social events so travel to and from the party is easier on guests. Parties can take place anywhere, including theatres, bowling alleys, wine stores, and floral nurseries.

Gifting Shopping at local vendors often means more personalized service and a less stressful experience. Develop a rapport with a favourite shop owner so that he or she can alert you to private sales or put coveted items on the side. A specialty store may have that unique gift not easily found elsewhere, and shop owners may be able to special-order bulk gifts. Smaller retailers may also offer specialized services, such as gift-wrapping or personal shopping. Shopping locally can help holiday shoppers save time and support their communities. — Metro

Small-business budget ‘essential to success’ Budgeting is important for businesses big and small. But while corporations or larger organizations might be able to stretch their budgets when necessary, small businesses often don’t have the luxury of such leeway. Because small businesses are often less financially flexible than their larger competitors and counterparts, small-business owners tend to agonize over their budgets when starting out. Part of that struggle

might stem from smallbusiness owners who specialize in their trade, but have little experience at running a business. But determining a smallbusiness budget is essential to a business’ success, as it helps owners determine if they have enough money to fund the business and its potential expansion, while also providing owners with a steady income. Continued on Page 23

Taking the time to prepare a practical-but-detailed budget is a key factor in the viability of small businesses.

Allocate: ‘know what to do with your revenue’ Continued from Page 22 Each industry is different, and budgets that work for one business will not necessarily work for another. But the following tips can help business owners develop an effective budget for their businesses, regardless of their industries. — Understand your industry. Understanding your industry and knowing your product are two different things. When establishing a budget for a new business, small-business owners should familiarize themselves with the industry they will be joining. — Calculate cost of machinery and materials. The prices of materials can fluctuate depending on supply and demand, but small-business owners developing a budget can research how such costs fluctuated in the past, or speak with business owners to determine how much of their initial cash supply and future revenue will need to be allocated to production costs. Another thing to learn about the industry is if there are certain trends that might dictate your revenue stream. If

you fail to do so, you might be forced to lay off workers, close your doors, or both. — Know what to do with your revenue. Developing a budget for a startup can be tricky, as it’s hard to know how to allocate your revenue when you don’t know how much revenue your business is going to generate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t allocate that yet-to-be-earned revenue. In fact, doing just that is entirely necessary. Determining your operating costs, which include cost of materials, labour, the rent or mortgage on the property where your business is housed and taxes among other expenses, helps you know how much revenue you’ll need to generate to make the business work. — Give yourself some breathing room. When developing a budget for your small business, it’s important to build some breathing room into that budget. That can provide some leeway should your estimated revenue fall short of your actual revenue or your business takes off and you suddenly find yourself in need of money in order to meet customer demand and/or expand staff.

— Develop a secondary emergency budget. Figures regarding the survival rates of new small businesses vary significantly. Conventional wisdom has long suggested such businesses fail far more often than they succeed, and many go up in flames rather quickly. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly half of all new businesses survive five years or more, and about one-third survive a decade or more. But surviving five years is not necessarily a 50-50 proposition, as small-business owners who plan ahead for emergencies are likely in better positions to make it to 10 years than those that don’t. When developing a secondary emergency budget, include cost-cutting measures, which can make it easier to make tough decisions if money becomes tight. — Review the budget regularly. Once the business has opened, owners should review their budgets to determine if money is being spent as wisely as possible. You might have overestimated certain costs, which can free up money to grow the business. — Metro

‘Resist going overboard’ in crafting business plan

A great business plan can go a long way toward transforming an idea into a successful business. Though no two businesses are the same, good business plans tend to follow a similar formula: — Don’t be too wordy. Potential investors, whether they’re venture capitalists, family members or lending institutions, don’t want to be handed a manifesto masquerading as a business plan. A good business plan is brief and gets to the point early on, spelling out why the business is worthy of an investment and how it is going to be successful. — Define what makes your business unique. Your business plan is similar to a sales pitch, one that you will

need to turn your idea into a business. A successful sales pitch should define what makes your business unique. Clearly define what separates your business from others and why these differences make you and your business idea a solid investment. — Resist going overboard. When crafting a business plan to present to potential lenders or investors, business owners may be tempted to offer quantity over quality. But successful startups often begin small, selling a particular idea or item, and then diversify their offerings after establishing a customer base and experiencing a prolonged period of success. Investors and lenders are aware of this and might be turned

off by a business plan that makes business owners appear less like an expert and more like a jack-of-all-trades. — Be specific as to how you will generate revenue. Good business plans clearly indicate how business owners plan to generate revenue. Simply selling products won’t be enough to convince savvy investors. — Define your market. When defining the market for your business, include its size and the specific people within that market you intend to target. — Make projections. A strong business plan will include estimates as to how many future customers you hope to attract and the cost of acquiring those customers. — Metro
