Born in England and raised in other areas, including Africa, Kerry Hobbs has lived a largely nomadic life.

And happily so.

Something in her changed, though, when she and her husband, Guy, moved to Creston.

“Three months after we arrived here, I said to Guy, ‘I think I’m finished moving around,’ ” she said.

She couldn’t have foreseen that not much more than a year

later she would be sitting at a desk, talking about her role as the new manager of Creston’s College of the Rockies campus.

Hobbs has a varied background of education and experience, though, and the hiring committee was obviously impressed with what they saw in her. She has practiced as a registered nurse and midwife, taught doctors how to use medical equipment, sold pharmaceuticals and managed hotels.

he mood may be a little bit romantic at Black Bear Books next week, when Creston romance author Susan Lohrer officially launches her first two novels, Rocky Road and Over the Edge.

The event will include a reading by the author. There will be treats, too — brownies, specifically, baked by Black Bear Books owner Paula Carpenter, because they are featured in a funny and romantic way in one of Lohrer’s romantic comedy books.

“The brownies didn’t turn out so well in the book, but I’m sure Paula’s will turn out fine,” said Lohrer with a laugh.

the B.C. Land Access Guide, which, according to the YA website, “provides a framework for new farmers looking to explore options for how to get on land.” It also gives landowners a better idea of what a farmer would need to work land, and offers help for established farmers looking to negotiate land-use agreements.

The problem right now isn’t that farmers are in short supply, Hannant said, but “it’s more of an issue that there are people who have land not being used. A lot of people have land for sale, but they don’t really want to sell it — they’re simply not able to manage it.”

It’s becoming necessary, she said, to find new methods of farm succession — in the past, land would be passed from one family member to another, and farmers all knew each other because the community would get together for barn raising and harvesting.

That’s often no longer the case, Hannant said, which makes land linking events that much more vital to developing a farming community.

“We can’t help each other if we don’t know each other,” she said.

Creston couple off to the races as horse owners about whether to sell their horses and buy new ones or stick with the ones they have. The experience has given them an unexpected entry into a world they had little knowl-

Merla and Gary Pollitt have found their own unusual way of betting on the races. They have become part owners of some thoroughbred horses that run in them.

Gary, who works as a pipeline inspector for about half the year, and Merla, a retired executive assistant in the education field, are best known locally as the developers of Pair-A-Dice RV Park and Campground on Northwest Boulevard. From outward appearances, they wouldn’t be recognized as participants in the rarified world of horseracing.

Only Gary has a background with horses. He competed in pony chuck wagon races and team roping competitions as a younger man in Alberta who grew up on a ranch. Merla describes herself as a city girl.

“I met this roper at a roping dance in Caroline, Alberta, and it was love at first dance,” she laughed.

They were happy in their semi-retired lives after selling the RV park, not expecting to get involved in racehorses, but opportunity knocked.

“Our nephew and his wife have 200 acres of property down in Kentucky, between Lexington and Louisville, right in horse country.” Gary said. “So they’ve got a spread down there and they run some horses. He was into horse racing in Alberta and now he’s kind of branched out into thoroughbred racing.

“And then they met a fellow named David Ingordo. He (Gary’s nephew) came up to Canada and they decided to put a Canadian racing syndicate together. So there’s probably about a dozen of us in Canada that formed the company and can buy shares in it. “ Shares sell for $5,000 each. The Pollitts aren’t major players in the syndicate, they admit.

“We own about half a hoof,” Gary laughed.

“Or maybe a whisker on the nose,” Merla added.

“We’re not the biggest shareholders, that’s for sure,” Gary said.

The syndicate, with Ingordo, who has his own bloodstock business (he made his name as the buyer of Zenyatta at auction, who went on to win more than $10 million racing and is now making her name as a broodmare), making recommendations, has purchased four horses to date. One died of colic complications but two have had success running as a two-year-old.

“We buy fillies, so that if they do well racing we can sell them for broodmares,” Gary said.

One, Jubiliant’s Vision, recently ran her second race, which she won at Churchill Downs (home of the Kentucky Derby).

“She won by four lengths, which is pretty good,” said Merla. “The odds were 5-2, not the favourite, but up there.”

Another, Brazen Persuasion, has raced four times. In the first two she finished second and the next she won. Two of those races were in Churchill Downs in Kentucky and the last two were in Saratoga Springs, Fla. The Pollitts are long-distance owners for the most part, but Merla and her sister went to Florida to see Brazen Persuasion’s fourth race.

“It was a Grade One stakes, that’s a $300,000 race, and she didn’t come out of the gate,” Merla recalled.

There was Merla, among a group of owners all “dressed to the nines” in case they had to be photographed in the winner’s circle, sitting in box seats to watch their horse. The owners were confused when they couldn’t see Brazen Persuasion as the horses rounded the clubhouse turn on a muddy track.

“She didn’t want to get her pedicure dirty,” Merla said. “She’d never seen mud before.”

Brazen Persuasion did emerge from the starting gate, but refused to run.

“She is now back on the farm in Kentucky and will probably be off until the first part of December and then she’ll start training again,” Gary said.

The third horse owned by the syndicate, Honorable Soul, developed shin splits while training. Screws have been inserted to strengthen the bone, and often horses that undergo the procedure emerge stronger than ever. Hopes

remain high for a horse whose bloodlines extend back to Northern Dancer and Secretariat.

Last year, Gary and Merla went to Ocala, Fla., where the horses are trained, to see Jubilant Vision.

“They keep the stables so immaculate,” Merla said. “They bubble bath them everyday — they smell better than any woman I’ve smelled!”

Investing in thoroughbred horses isn’t for the faint of heart. The daily rate to keep a horse in a training facility is $100. And that’s before racing expenses. As a one-year-old, Jubilant’s Vision cost $30,000 at an auction in which 4,000 horses were sold over an 11-day period. Brazen Persuasion was purchased at a horse sale in Ocala as a two-year-old for $210,000.

Thefts, break-ins and more for Creston RCMP

Creston RCMP started last week responding to a flurry of calls about unlocked vehicles being entered. No suspects have been identified, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

Police received 67 calls for service from Oct. 21-27, Gollan said.

October 21 •A suspicious person reported to be looking into vehicles on Hawkview Drive was not located.

•The theft of various items from vehicles on Murdoch Street was reported.

•Tools and cash were stolen from a vehicle on 16th Avenue North.

•An iPod was stolen when two vehicles were entered on Alder Street.

•An assortment of possibly stolen items was found in a portable toilet at a 16th Avenue North construction site.

•A male reported to be driving a moped without lights on Bacon Road in Gray Creek was later located by police. He said he was going away from his residence to smoke pot.

•Unlocked vehicles were entered on Highway 3A. •Damage to a parked vehicle, cause unknown, was reported from Cook Street.

•Police received complaints from two parties, each accusing the other of harass-

ing behavior — hand gesture, foul language, name-calling, unwanted telephone calls, stalking, the whole ball of wax.

•Medications were left in a rental property by a previous tenant on Goat River Road.

•Passports stolen from a vehicle on Hurl Street were later found on the street nearby.

•A male was transported to hospital under the Mental Health Act. October 22 •The internal theft of cash was reported from a 16th Avenue South residence.

•A bicycle was found on Devon Road.

•A MasterCard was found on 25th Avenue South. Police determined the card had never been activated.

•A female threatened another, who returned the favour, on Cook Street in what police concluded was a case of road rage.

•A saddle reported as stolen in this space two weeks ago was recovered in Salmo.

•A vehicle near Kingsgate was rummaged through.

October 23 •A vehicle backed into another on Highway 95 near Kingsgate.

•A driver attempting to parallel park backed into another vehicle on Pine Street, then drove off. The driver was issued a ticket for failing to stop at the scene.

•Two female ex-roommates got into a hair-pulling match in an argument over bills. They refused to co-operate with police.

Non-profit questions town’s tax exemption criteria

A group of five representatives from Kootenai Community Centre Society arrived at the Oct. 22 regular Creston town council meeting, hoping to get another kick at the town’s property tax exemption decisions.

The bylaw was passed before the meeting’s end, though, as question period is one of the last items on every meeting agenda. Without an appointment to appear as a delegation — a KCCS representative spoke at the previous meeting — there was no opportunity for further input and the group left without being heard.

Lendina Bambrick said that the criteria used by the committee that recommended that some KCCS properties should not get a 100 per cent property tax exemption did not follow guidelines.

“The report clearly outlines the criteria (for a tax exemption) and ‘compete with private sector businesses’ is not one of the criteria, “she said. “So we are feeling the process was flawed in that regard.”

This year is the first that town council has set a cap to limit tax exemptions, forcing the committee to recommend less than full exemptions on most non-profit properties.

In the West Kootenay, Hobbs was in management at two hotels. Guy worked at the Castlegar News and pursued his talent for drawing wildlife.

“I’m still grinning from earto-ear 24 hours a day,” she said.

“I told Kathy (Tompkins, her predecessor, who retired this fall) that this feels like a job I could stay at until I retire.”

Her first month on the job has involved learning about how the Creston campus fits into the COTR group of facilities around the Kootenays, and about the many partnerships it has within the Creston Valley.

“To be able to link education with our other community partners is our mission,” she said.

“The chamber of commerce, Kootenay Employment Services, the Lower Kootenay Band, the Creston Valley Advance — those and many others are vital in making us who we are. I don’t see us as a standalone educational facility.

Without the support of other groups, we wouldn’t be here.”

The college offers a variety of programs.

Some run continuously, like the academic courses for adults, while others are referred to as rolling, offered every several years in Creston as they rotate through other East Kootenay campuses. Rolling programs include health care assistant and hairdressing.

Special interest courses, like arts, are largely dependent on people who live in the community and have special skills. Program necessities, ones that are needed in every community, include several levels of first aid and Food Safe.

Kerry Hobbs Hobbs cites two areas that often intertwine as recent focuses. Agriculture courses, including the Know and Grow Community Farm, Kootenay Farm School and beginner farmer training, build on the Creston Valley’s agriculture base. Social programs have worked to bring people of all ages — families, elementary school students, adults and

cretional grant to fund a bursary for a Kootenay Farm School student was referred to 2014 budget discussions. Laura Hannant, facilitator of partnerships for community development from the College of the Rockies, reported that plans for the farm school are well underway and that a waiting list includes twice as many expressions of interest than the program will be able to accommodate in the first year.

She said donations for bursaries are being sought in order to reduce the tuition burden and to send a positive message of support to prospective young farmers.

“These have both been successful but we will work to continue expanding them,” she said.

Stepping into a new career has been smoothed by the support of an experienced office staff and dedicated group of instructors, she emphasized.

“These people offer a Vancouver level of instruction right here in Creston,” Hobbs said. “We are very fortunate.”

Her commitment to a community she has grown to love means inviting local residents’ input.

“I want to hear from people.

Tell us what you want to learn.

We welcome suggestions.”

Hobbs hopes to organize an open house at the college in the spring to show the public what a valuable resource they have in their neighbourhood, and to invite comments and new ideas for programs.

“We are only as strong as the community around us,” she smiled. “And I think that makes us very, very strong.”

And the trophy goes to...

I’m a city boy. Aside from summers in my youth spent fly fishing in the rivers and creeks around Fernie, and a few afternoons plinking gophers in a farmer’s field with a borrowed .22 rifle, my associations with hunting and fishing are few. So when a promised review copy of a trophy hunter’s adventures landed on my desk I was not without trepidation.

Trophy hunters. Aren’t those the rich white guys who go to African game farms and blast away at exotic species? Don’t they shoot really big things, take the horns and leave the rest of the animal to rot? Don’t they hunt from the comfort of an ATV or even a helicopter?

I opened my copy of Rob Shatzko’s Unquenchable Spirit: Twenty-five Years in Pursuit of Adventure (watch for a story and info about a local book signing in an upcoming edition) at about 6 p.m. on the evening I received it. I finished the 300-page book early — very early — the next morning.

After a few hours sleep, I couldn’t resist getting up to finish it.

And I learned a lot. In the first pages of Unquenchable Spirit, Shatzko referred to his “philosophy”. I was expecting some Zen definition about being one with the animal’s spirit or some such thing. Instead, his philosophy unfolded as the chapters piled up. No pithy, self-righteous slogan.

No trite, quotable words to justify his enthusiasm. Instead, what emerges is a picture of a man who has an insatiable desire to get out into the wilderness, the further from other people the better. I soon learned that Shatzko’s trophy hunting is simply subsistence hunting taken to another level.

He started out as a subsistence hunter — getting the requisite tags each year and shooting game to fill the freezer. But a connection with an extremely knowledgeable outdoorsman, who eventually became his mentor, led Shatzko to understand

that there is more to hunting than meets the eye. To use my own words, almost anyone can go out into the bush for a day of hunting, taking the first regulation-sized ani-

And not everyone can, because trophy hunting is strictly regulated. Some tags come down to winning a draw, others purchased by working through regulated guide services.

As Shatzko writes (beautifully, with the help of his wife, a career writer) about his many and varied adventures, the reader comes to appreciate the dedication with which he is fulfilling his quest to pit his wits against the elements. He’s taken college courses, pored over maps, listened to seasoned professionals and put himself in harm’s way more often than a city boy can understand.

It seems like a juxtaposition, but Shatzko the trophy hunter is every bit the environmentalist who works tirelessly to preserve and protect our natural ecology. But he is driven to test himself, to push himself to the outer limits of reasonable risk. He has damaged his body, probably in part because hunting for trophies does not, as I had feared, mean abandoning the meat of the animal. Packing 80, 100 or 120 pounds of meat up and down mountains and through forest and stream might not be a city boy’s idea of a good time, but it’s what a responsible hunter, trophy or other-

wise, does without a moment’s thought. He still fills the freezer but works really, really hard to do so.

Years ago Shatzko’s daughter, Cassidy, then a Prince Charles Secondary School student, wrote in the Advance about her own trophy hunting experiences. The very idea made me queasy. But she’s included in the book, too, and I came away admiring her determination and passion, just as I came to admire her dad’s. In another era, Shatzko wouldn’t have been a trophy hunter. He’d have been an explorer, a coureur des bois, a runner of the woods paddling through whitewater rapids in undiscovered territory. He’d have been a surveyor, pushing through brush and forest, braving high mountain passes chest deep in snow, searching for an elusive and almost unfathomable railway route through the Rockies. He’d have been Edmund Hillary or even one of the Sherpa guides who risked life and limb to explore the highest peaks on the planet.

He might be a man who is not of this time, but Shatzko has made the best of it. I first met him in his other life, that of a building contractor. He was doing a project for a non-profit I was involved in and he had to deal with a manager who isn’t always the easiest person to please. And all I heard about him was how good his work was, how hard he worked to make everything just right, how thoughtful and decent and reliable he was. He is, I concluded when I put down the book, that same man when he is out on his latest quest to harvest a trophy sheep, thoughtful, driven and highly ethical.

I am a city boy. But I am not without envy of a man who seems almost possessed to test himself, to leave behind creature comforts and see just what he can do relying on his own resources.

Trust offers benefits to region

Until two weeks ago, I had only a general, very limited understanding of the Columbia Basin Trust.

I knew it flowed from the Columbia River Treaty that was signed in the fairly distant past between Canada and the United States. I knew that the treaty’s purpose was to benefit the U.S. by reducing annual flooding that limited the powerproducing possibilities on the lower Columbia and frequently caused material damage and even loss of life in that area.

I knew that the U.S. agreed to pay Canada (in effect, B.C.) for building dams that would control the flow of water across the border.

And I knew that some of that money was used to create the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).

Beyond these generalities, however, I knew only that the CBT did good things for those of us who live in this southeastern corner of our province.

Then, along with more than 300 other people from all over the basin, I attended the symposium, Seeds for Success, that the CBT held here in Creston two weeks ago and discovered that I didn’t know the half of it.

First, I was able to replace my general understanding with specifics. For example, I learned that the Columbia River Treaty was agreed upon in 1963, after several years of negotiation, and ratified a year later. I learned that the first bit of treaty concrete, the Duncan Dam north of Kaslo, was completed in 1967, followed a year later by the Hugh Keenleyside (formerly the High Arrow) Dam.

Next, I found out, much to my surprise, that it was not until 1995, more than 20 years after the treaty signing, that the Columbia Basin Trust was created. This happened because people in

Experience Peter Hepher the basin complained that, while the province as a whole was better off because of the treaty, people and areas in the basin had suffered from flooding behind treaty dams and in other ways.

The legislation creating the trust gave it $276 millon for power-project construction, an endowment of $45 million and an annual grant for operations of $2 million from 1995-2010. To run the organization, it provided for a 12-person board, five to be chosen by municipal authorities, one to represent First Nations and six appointed by the province. All were to be basin residents.

So much for history. The most exciting information to come out of the symposium, however, concerns what the CBT is doing to improve life in the basin now.

that it operates completely and the others that it supports with advice. (In last week’s issue of the Advance alone, I found three thank yous to the CBT from local non-profit groups.)

Clearly, the CBT is fulfilling its mandate to “create a legacy of social, economic and environmental well-being” for the people of the Columbia River basin.

Its past achievements in this context have been monumental and their beneficial impact immeasurable.

Yet the Creston symposium demonstrated two important reasons for its success.

Firstly, the CBT does not decide what will benefit the people of the basin by sitting in an ivory tower in Castlegar. It goes to great lengths to talk with the people of the basin, to listen to their ideas and desires.

Secondly, the people who “run” the CBT are determined not to let the trust get into a rut. As they told us at the symposium, they expect significant changes in the near future in the social, economic and, especially, environmental conditions prevailing in the basin and they are bent on discussing with basin residents how the trust should respond to those changes.

We basin residents owe much to the people who fought for the trust’s creation as well as to those have carried out its mandate since and continue to do so.

You will remember that in Daniel 2 the empire of Rome was divided into ten toes. In Daniel 7, it is represented by a beast with 10 horns. These horns symbolize the 10 barbarian tribes that arose from a deteriorating Roman Empire.

History backs up these conclusions.

What is it that appeals to you about the car?

The full-size truck market is big business for automakers and a big deal for the businesses and people who depend on them.

For almost five decades the Ford F-150 has been the best selling truck, with little chance they will lose that crown in the near future. What has been happening, over the last few years, is a strong shift from General Motors to RAM in terms of establishing the second best selling truck brand. The rise in RAM popularity can be traced back to a few key changes over the last several years, from muscular styling to class-leading interiors, a refined ride, plus engine and transmission advancements.

I drove the 2014 RAM model range recently, on a beautiful fall day, just outside of Toronto. The “RAM Roundup” was a great opportunity to get my hands on these new trucks well before they arrive at BC dealerships.

One option that I find fascinating, and would seriously consider, is the $1500 air suspension that can be lowered for easier entry into the RAM or loading into the bed. Plus this system automatically lowers over 100km/h to also reduce aerodynamic drag. At lower speeds and for off-road duties, the air suspension can be raised for better ground clearance. Having had a chance to drive several RAM trucks with this feature I notice the already smooth ride is even better and the cabin is further insulated from vibration.

Film examines issues that prompted Idle No More CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Creston Valley Public Library presents Alanis Obomsawin’s National Film Board documentary, The People of the Kattawapiskak River on Nov. 12.

Prior to undertaking her recent hunger strike, Chief Theresa Spence had declared a state of emergency in the Attawapiskat First Nation community in northern Ontario, due to the shocking housing conditions in the community, the Canadian government’s gross mismanagement of the situation, and the presence of a lucrative diamond mine operating on the land.

In The People of the Kattawapiskak River, iconic filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin investigates the stories behind the media storm, and introduces us to the mothers, fathers, and children of Attawapiskat, who live in conditions even worse than had been imagined. Unsparingly depicting the shockingly grim realities of life in Attawapiskat — toddlers crawling around in houses that are falling apart, parents who

cannot afford the exorbitant cost of the few groceries that are available to them, the residents’ struggles to find clean, drinkable water — Obomsawin also paints a portrait of a resilient community fighting to hold on to their life and their future.

A crucial film in the midst of a media-saturated public debate that often relegates those most affected to the sidelines, The People of the Kattawapiskak River is at once a powerful chapter in the long history of struggle by Canada’s Aboriginal peoples, a radical exposé of a vital contemporary issue, and an impassioned call to action.

Obomsawin was present in the community in 2011, working on another film for the National Film Board of Canada, when the housing issue came to national attention. The film follows the crisis up to the Federal Court of Canada’s August 2012 decision that ruled the appointment of a third-party manager to fix the housing crisis was unjustified. In addition to filming conditions in the community and interviewing residents, Obomsawin recounts the history of the village, which dates back to

1850 when Catholic missionaries built a chapel on the land.

Obomsawin has stated that she uses the name Kattawapiskak in place of Attiwapiskat in the film and its title because she believes it to be the community’s correct name.

“People who watch these documentaries start thinking differently,” she said. “They think, ‘Oh my God, all my life I felt these Indians, they are always complaining.’ People are shocked when they start hearing these things. They live next door to a

reservation and they don’t know the reality of that community.”

Over nearly 40 years, Obomsawin has made more than 30 documentaries, dealing primarily with issues affecting Aboriginal people in Canada.

But Obomsawin first dealt with Aboriginal issues in the early 1960s as a folksinger, touring Canada and performing for humanitarian causes in universities, museums, prisons and art centres, as well as at folk art festivals. She got her start at the National Film Board in 1967,

when producers saw Obomsawin on TV. They invited the singerstoryteller to the film board to work as an advisor on a film about Aboriginal people.

Obomsawin went on to direct films of her own, while continuing to perform and fight for justice for her people.

An officer of the Order of Canada, Obomsawin has been named to the Playback Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame, has received a Governor General’s Award in visual and media arts, and received the Hot Docs film festival’s Outstanding Achievement Award. She was honoured with the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for lifetime artistic achievement.

The People of the Kattawapiskak River will be preceded by the short film, Trapper, a beautiful short capturing the quiet dignity of a day in the life of a northern trapper.

rebounded to a resounding 11-1 victory over the Columbia Valley Rockies the next night.

“They had a long bus ride to think about Friday’s game,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “So they were ready for Saturday.”

Friday’s game saw the Thunder Cats make a slow start, down 4-2 after the first period.

“We definitely came out flat in the first period and they took it to us,” said Hepditch. “We dug ourselves a hole we just couldn’t get out of.”

Trevor Hanna and Matthew Murray scored in the first period, with Hanna scoring a power-play goal in the second. The Thunder Cats were down 6-3 heading into the third period, in which Jesse Collins scored at 11:22, before the Rockets scored a seventh and final goal.

“We started to claw back a bit in the second period,” said Hepditch. “We just couldn’t find a way to get enough of what we needed.”

The loss inspired the Thunder Cats to win the next night, when they hosted the Rockies.

“They really wanted to set an example against Columbia Valley, who was ahead of us in the standings going into the game,” said Hepditch. “They came out guns ablaze and didn’t stop all game.”

Scoring and points were well spread around the team, with 10 players — including forwards and defence — scoring the 11 goals.

Logan Styler and Colby Livingstone scored in the first period, with Connor Kidd, Styler, Collins (power play) and Carson Cartwright scoring in the second, before the Rockies’ only goal on a power play at 3:13; Brandon Formosa scored the Thunder Cats’ seventh goal with 34 seconds remaining in the period. In the third period, Maverick Lynes started the scoring at 18:41, followed by

goals from Jaymes Veitch, Andrew Hodder and Murray.

A total of 31 points were earned by 14 players, with five going to Formosa, four to Collins, and three to Veitch, Hodder and Livingstone.

“I don’t discredit their goalies at all,” said Hepditch. “We just had some really good goals. That’s something we’ve been trying to work on. … It just seems like they made it click on Saturday night.”

This weekend, the Thunder Cats play against the Kimberley Dynamiters twice, taking them on in Creston on Friday and Kimberley on Saturday. The games are important — with 19, the Dynamiters are just one point ahead of the Thunder Cats, who are followed by the Rockies (17), the Fernie Ghostriders (15) and the Rockets (13).

“We obviously feel we have a very strong team,” said Hepditch.

“It will be a good chance to see how we measure up.”

Vina May Melnychuk

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Vina on October 25, 2013 at the Swan Valley Lodge in Creston, BC, at the age of 83 years.

Vina was born on June 15, 1929 in Wood Mountain, SK. Vina lived a long life surrounded by people whom loved her deeply. She had a passion for cooking and had a couple of successful restaurants in Calgary, AB before moving to Creston in the early 1990’s.

Vina was predeceased by her husband, Peter in 2008; mother Edna W. Sinclair in 1997; sisters Melba O’Brien, Doris Pye and brother John Sinclair.

She will be missed greatly by her niece Tina Rees, who had lived with Vina and Peter in Creston. She will also be lovingly remembered by her immediate family, Margaret Drewniak (John), Marnie and John Jr. Drewniak; sisters Nettie Rupert (Laurie), Jesse Gamache (Ken), Amy Pierozinski (Peter), Alice Struck (Ray) along with many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in May 2014.

Any friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Swan Valley Lodge Equipment Fund, Box 1880, Creston, BC, V0B 1G0 or to the Creston Valley Hospice Society – 1720 Birch St, Creston , BC, V0B 1G5.

Vina’s family wish to thank the staff of the Pioneer Wing at Swan Valley Lodge and the Creston Valley Hospice Society for all the loving care provided to Vina.

Mabel Feldt

August 23, 1912 ~ October 21, 2013 Mabel Feldt passed away peacefully on October 21, 2013 in Swan Valley Lodge at the age of 101 years.

Mabel was born in Bruce, AB on August 23, 1912 to parents Marguerite and Raoul Moser. When she was just a few months old they moved to the Heimdal area where her father homesteaded.

Mabel completed grade eight at the Heimdal School and worked on the family farm until she married Ewalt Feldt on June 8, 1937. They were married at St. Vital Catholic Church in Beaumont, AB. They then moved to Lumberton, BC where Ewalt worked as a blacksmith for a few years. They moved back to Alberta where he started a business at Clover Lawn and then moved it to Rolly View. He operated his blacksmith shop for many years and then they retired to Erickson, BC. Mabel has a sister-in-law, Elsie Moser (wife of brother Camille) who lives in Camrose, AB; four nieces: Shirley Steele of Oak Harbor, WA, Gladys Caple of Powel River, BC, Joyce Agresti of Cerritos, CA and Lois Macfarlane of Flin Flon, MB; and three nephews, Morris and Wayne Moser of Port Coquitlam, BC and Lawrence Moser of Camrose, AB. A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Peter Tompkins ofÀciating.

Interment followed the service at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC. Any friends wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so to the Holy Cross Catholic Church Box 299, Creston, BC, V0B 1G0.

November 12, 1926 ~ October 17, 2013 Irene Mary Popowich, passed away after a lengthy illness in Creston, British Columbia, on October 17, 2013, at the age of 86.

Irene was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on November 12, 1926.

Irene was predeceased by her husband John on May 31, 2004.

Irene was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

A Funeral Service for Irene will be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Garry Fricke of Vernon, B.C. on October 7, 2013.

Garry was born in Saskatoon, SK. He was a journeyman carpenter all his life.

He was predeceased by his father Gerhard Fricke.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 40 years, Geraldine; mother Hilde Fricke of Creston, B.C.; sister Ellen (Randy) Samuelson of Creston, B.C.; brother Andy Fricke of Trail, B.C. and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Garry's Life was held in Creston, B.C. on October 19, 2013.

MaryJane Matze October 16, 1923 ~ October 23, 2013

On the morning of October 23, 2013 at the age of 90, MaryJane Matze quietly and peacefully left this life to be with her heavenly father.

MaryJane was born in Deseronto, Ontario. MaryJane spent her childhood years in Port Hope and later in Toronto. MaryJane then moved with her son Rodney to Hamilton, where she met and married Siegfried (Fred) Matze on May 21, 1960. In the spring of 1961 their son Craig arrived. As a family they enjoyed a good life, travel holidays took them across North America and Europe.

Expo '86 made the decision for them to move west. In 1987 they arrived in Creston, B.C. where they retired.

MaryJane leaves nine grand- and great-grandchildren She will be missed by all.

gets to attend a pumpkin wedding — officiated by a witch, no less — but Wildflower students held one on Oct. 23 at Know and Grow Community Farm. The farm at Creston's College of the Rockies campus has been hosting students from Creston Valley schools all week, and those students have been decorating the 140 pumpkins donated by Truscott Farms.
