Valley Shidokan offers traditional JKA Karate-Do, taught by Don Sharp. Sensei Don Sharp is a JKA certified 6th degree Black belt, with many more International certifications. He was the World Champion in 1996, and has medaled in over 20 International competitions, 50 National tournaments and countless Provincial events. His students have competed successfully in World level tournaments and he has had many students make the national team in both JKA and NKA organizations over the years. Our Dojo focuses on learning and applying the true traditions of the art, while using a modern approach to training and fitness to reach all ages and walks of life. The Best Place on Earth As many of you know by now I immigrated to Canada in 2001 with my husband and our 3 sons. We landed in Chilliwack, still are and loving it! Do you want to know why? It’s the best place on earth! What’s so special about Chilliwack? Everything!! Every morning when I drive to work and I see the mountains I have the feeling I’m on holiday, still. Our boys played sports all the time, hockey at Twin Rinks, at 6:00AM in the Coloseum, later at Prospera Center. Soccer at Fairfield Island,Rugby at Townsend Park and Football is there too, first on grass, later on the beautiful turf field. All pretty close and great facilities. Schools? From elementary to secondary school, it’s all there. So is the Shopping experience, from the second hand stores to the luxurious boutiques, something for everybody. Stroll along Wellington, or go to the malls on a rainy day, or anywhere in between. We want to go out for dinner? Plenty of international cuisines can be found here. We just got our wonderful cultural Centre the place to go for a night out, or our two movie theatres, lots to choose from. We love to go for a walk along the Vedder river, on a Sunday afternoon, it’s gorgeous, the river, the mountains, sometimes even eagles in the trees. I’m not surprised that The Progress received over 7000 nominations for their A-List!

The spirit of service Canada Education Park while preserving much of the military history that encompasses the former Canada Forces Base in Chilliwack. Together, Chilliwack celebrates its role in serving our national interests in previous years while becoming a centre for excellence in advanced education and trades and technology training for the future. The incredible recreational facilities, parks and community buildings are a result of the tireless work of Chilliwack volunteers. Chilliwack residents give much of their time to esit on committees to plan and execute projects that serve the greaterr community. The Vedder Rotaryy Trail, Landing Leisure Centre and Chilliwack Cultural Centre are perfect examples of this. We are so blessed to get to live and work together in this community. Having had the opportunity to live in various parts of British Columbia before settling down in Chilliwack, what I admire most about our community is the spirit of service that is embodied by the people who call Chilliwack home. When faced with a challenge Chilliwack residents work together to find a solution. This is evidenced by the passionate non-profit organizations that are so well-supported by the people who live here. It is also apparent in the ways that the people of Chilliwack work to grow Chilliwack’s economy. Small business owners also contribute to the best aspects of Chilliwack. City girls enjoy the small country feel of our community Ken’s Tire & Wheel makes me feel comfortable whether it is a repair or the purchase of tires, I know I can trust the staff. Mr. Lube is my place for oil changes, fast & efficient. By far the best family activity in town is Party in the Park. Entertainment, activities and a variety of food & craft vendor’s make for an enjoyable experience not to mention meeting up with wonderful people from our community puts this at the top of my A-list. Culture has always been a big part of this City girl’s life and the Chilliwack Cultural Centre has lived up to a tall order and made my A-list. Can you put the Country in the big City girl? I love taking a walk along the Rotary Trail and soaking in the sites and sounds of nature. Being surrounded by majestic mountains instead of concrete walls has a charming appeal. Growing up with ethnic foods, there is no better place then right in the heart of Downtown Chilliwack. Greek food was a large part of my experience in Ottawa and by far, Rendezvous has the best lamb and Greek salad available. Bravo is my A-list choice for fine dining and Rustica Ristorante not only the best Italian but it has a special place as this is where my husband proposed to me. I must say that for the best breakfast & lunch, we head to Jimmy J’s as it is a great value for good prices. Working out at the Downtown YMCA is a great experience as everyone is friendly and the volunteers the best! Optimum Sport is my “Cheers-where everyone knows my name…the best physical fitness guru’s help with massage, chiropractic & acupuncture needs. I love clothes and one of my favorite new spots is Bella Clothing Boutique, they know what looks good on me and I must give honorable mentions to Lolly’s Fashion Lounge downtown as they have taken care of me for years. Where does a woman go to feel confident about buying new tires?

I guess you can tell that I like it here When my family first came to Chilliwack in 1983 we Chilliwack Mountain. There is simply no place like it on earth. rented a house on Little Mountain. I guess you can tell that I We came from the flat-and-dry Prairies; I had recently spent years in college in Regina. To come from that rather austere like it here. setting to a verdant, brilliantly green valley just minutes away Laurie Throness, MLA from lakes - with beaches with actual sand, not just pebbles Chilliwack-Hope and rivers and golf courses and ski-hills, the American border and Vancouver and the ocean itself, was like coming to a kind of earthly paradise. We were used to skinny bare trees, beaten by the wind and bitter cold. To hike through dim, giant rainforests laden with moss and shot through with shafts of golden sunlight, was awe-inspiring. And then there were the mountains; mountains everywhere you looked. Every day we ascended to our house on Little Mountain, and its breathtaking view of our miniature paradise from above. In all kinds of weather the land and sky offered unparalleled views of constantly-changing beauty, and thirty years later I still drink in these soul-feeding sights every day, whether it’s looking up from the Valley floor or looking out from Promontory, the Falls, Little Mountain or

Chilliwack has been my home for almost six years and I am so happy to have settled here. Who could not agree that we live in one of the most beautiful cities in BC? The view of Mt. Cheam from my window, the Vedder River just a short drive away, and friends to enjoy the many outdoor activities Chilliwack has to offer. I love starting my day with a class or workout at The Chilliwack Family YMCA. It’s such a great organization that has something for people of all ages and fitness abilities. Chilliwack is home to a large number of community minded volunteers and service organizations. In my short time at The Chilliwack Hospice Society I have come to meet some wonderful volunteers who give so much of themselves whether it be spending their time at The Cascade Residence, working in the community, working at The Thrifty Boutique, or working on our upcoming November Night Gala. These individuals are so passionate about their contribution to the work of The Chilliwack Hospice Society, and I know there are many other people in Chilliwack who work to support other non-profit groups or causes that are dear to their hearts. Other things I love about our city is the easy access to outdoor

The Great Outside It is easy to understand why more and more people are moving to Chilliwack. It really does go beyond affordable Real Estate and nice neighbourhoods, although that is a big positive! I am proud to have lived the majority of my life in Chilliwack, and I feel very fortunate to now raise a family in this amazing community. There are so many reasons to be thankful Chilliwack is my home. Our scenery is spectacular. The combination of rivers, lakes, mountains and agricultural land blend to create a photographers dream landscape. To me, there is nothing that quite says Chilliwack like majestic Mt. Cheam covered in snow with clear blue sky as a back-drop. The hike to the peak of Mt. Cheam is my favourite hike, as the view of the Fraser Valley is breathtaking. Anyone that loves outdoor recreational opportunities will find Chilliwack and the surrounding area has a lot to offer. Personally, I love to jog on the Rotary Vedder River Trail, and recently experienced the new Peach Creek Trail. What a perfect location to easily view spawning salmon.
A
Summer and Cultus Lake are the perfect match for many people that live in Chilliwack. Fantastic family attractions such as Cultus Lake Water Park combine with great camping, beaches and on the he lake fun. To me, nothing g says summer quite like the e arrival of Chilliwack cornn and farm fresh produce e stands around town. Both of my childrenn enjoy playing soccer, and Chilliwack FC and the City of Chilliwack have provided them with amazing opportunities to play on high quality fields at the new Exhibition Turf Field and Brian Coombe s at Townsend Park. A ROUND C HILLIWACK AROUND CHILLIWACK Chilliwack are some of the best in the Lower Mainland, and Chilliwack has abundant sport options for all ages. I love the passion, and compassion, that people in Chilliwack have to make our community a better place. There are hundreds of volunteers that contribute their time and energy in so many worthwhile and meaningful ways, and to me the Chilliwack Hospice Society is one of those special community organizations. I live on the north side of Highway #1, and our Downtown has a special place in my heart. Like so many residents I have fond memories of the Downtown, and I believe there is a positive future ahead because so many people really do care. In my opinion there are many A-List worthy businesses in the Downtown, including The Bookman and Sticky’s Candy. Having so many great dining options close by is fantastic, with the Shandhar Hut, Chilies, and Bravo Restaurant some personal favourites.
