Getting serious about having fun Surrey sets its sights on becoming a city known for its recreational opportunities

A

decade ago, Surrey wasn’t exactly a sport tourism capital, but as its trajectory of rapid and diversified growth continues, the city is carving out a reputation of being a recreation destination.

It’s a city with more people under the age of 19 than anywhere in the province, and it has one of the most diverse populations – with a 28-percent immigrant composition and more refugees than any other B.C. municipality.

Surrey is also one of the fastest-growing cities in the province.

Every month, 1,000 new residents call Surrey home, and in the next 10 to 15 years, Surrey is expected to surpass Vancouver as the most populous city in B.C. As such, Surrey is becoming a major hub for recreation and sports, ranging from national classics such as hockey, to less traditionally Canadian activities like kabaddi.

Surrey got serious about having fun in 2008 with the launch of

the Parks, Recreation and Culture department’s 10-Year Strategic Plan, which involved research, analysis of demographics, and public consultation.

Hard data, such as who’s registering in what activity and whether that interest is escalating or decreasing, provides some insight into what facilities are needed, and where.

Sport associations and City Speaks, a community feedback web page (www.cityspeaks.ca), also provide information that factors into planning decisions.

But accurately identifying needs isn’t always easy, says Coun. Tom Gill.

Grass hockey is a less-conventional North American sport, yet it has been ballooning in popularity.

Five years ago there were only one or two grass hockey teams in Surrey.

Now there are 57.

“We never thought that there would be that much interest, but in fact it surpassed even the highest of expectations,” says Gill.

And it isn’t just recreational activities that are expanding. Coun. Linda Hepner says building facilities to

support such programs is a priority.

“We have the opportunity to expand on our sport tourism as an economic generator,” says Hepner, noting plans are well underway.

The city is currently involved in an aggressive Build Surrey campaign, with significant investment being dedicated to capital infrastructure.

Two new aquatic centres under construction in Guildford and Grandview Heights are primary examples. The dual investment will cost $47.3 million and $55 million for the Guildford and Grandview Heights facilities, respectively.

Both pools are expected to be open in fall 2014 or early 2015. Once completed, they will draw provincial and national competitions to Surrey.

Also in the works is the city’s first covered skateboard park in Cloverdale, and the first cricket pitch in Western Canada with a traditional clay-based composition in Newton.

With continued efforts to revitalize its recreational infrastructure, Surrey is setting itself up for future successes and opportunities as a major contender on the world stage.

An old sport is reaching new heights Cricket continues to grow in popularity as league celebrates a century

N

ewton will be home to the first specially designed cricket pitch – with a traditional clay-based composition – in Western Canada.

And it only took 100 years.

That’s the milestone anniversary the B.C. Mainland Cricket League (BCMCL) celebrated last week at the Punjab Banquet Hall, although cricket was being played in Vancouver as far back as the 1800s, according to league president Alex Turko.

The new clay-based pitch – north of Highway 10 between 128 and 132 Streets – is slated to be completed in spring of 2014 and is expected to become one of the premier locations for cricket, says Surrey Coun. Tom Gill.

It’s the second most popular sport in Surrey after soccer and its popularity is on the rise – largely due to immigration from southeast Asia. In places such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, cricket is the predominant sport.

Players are also coming from Australia, New Zealand and England.

There are 24 clubs in the BCMCL. Of these, 12 are Surrey-based clubs. There are over 1,500 registered players in the league – one-third of which are from Surrey.

Jimmy Hansra, 28, hails from India, where cricket was a big part of his life. He came to Canada when he was 14 years old and it wasn’t until he became a student at UBC that he realized that people here play cricket too.

In his first year he played soccer for the UBC team, but the week-day schedule was interfering too much with his studies.

Cricket, however, is a weekend sport.

Hansra switched gears, and geared up, for cricket. Since making that decision he’s been captain of Canada’s national team for two years, is currently vice-captain, and in November he and his team are going to Dubai for the T20 World Cup qualifiers.

He’s also captain of the B.C. team and plays for the Abbotsford Cricket Club.

He spends a lot of time training in Surrey.

“Since I joined, the teams have increased, the popularity has increased, the awareness has increased, and it just shows that people are talking about it,” says Hansra.

In Surrey in particular there has been an escalated interest.

“At least 60 to 70 per cent of the people who play cricket across Metro Vancouver [and the] Fraser Valley live in Surrey,” says Turko.

They may not necessarily play for a Surrey-based club, but that’s because there aren’t enough cricket fields to play on.

Several teams looking to register have been rejected due to a lack of facilities.

“That’s what’s hurting us… it could become the number-one sport in Canada,” says Harjit Sandhu, vice-president of BCMCL and president of Cosmos Cricket Club in Surrey.

The cricketers’ calls for grounds have not gone unheeded and the City of Surrey is making efforts to better accommodate the rising numbers of players.

Currently there are cricket pitches at Enver Creek, Sullivan Heights, Crescent, and South Surrey Athletic parks, and two new pitches were added to Newton Athletic Park this summer.

Already the new grounds are becoming popular, and the clay-based field will be a great asset for local players, says Hansra.

“At the end of the day, that is what we play on at the national level, so it’s a good practice for the guys here locally to play on that kind of surface,” he says.

While Vancouver still hosts most playoff games at Stanley Park, those tables may turn with the completion of Surrey’s newest cricket pitch.

Take a walk on Surrey’s wild side Nature abounds in the region’s fastest-growing city

t’s a sunny Sunday afternoon and Mike Cardeno is fishing alongside his dad, casting lures into a lake shimmering with reflected fall colour.

This is not a rural wilderness scene from some remote part of B.C. This tranquil oasis is nestled in the heart of urban Surrey – in Green Timbers Urban Forest, just a short walk from the SkyTrain stations and towers of City Centre or the retail bustle of Guildford Town Centre.

“It’s nice and peaceful,” Cardeno says. “It doesn’t really feel like you’re in the city when you’re out here. It’s real quiet.”

Green Timbers Lake, stocked with rainbow trout, is the centrepiece, but the park is criss-crossed with five kilometres of trails through second-growth forest, meadows and wetlands that let visitors lose themselves in nature. It’s also home to the Surrey Nature Centre.

Like Cardeno, many visitors find walking through nature a balm for the soul.

Redwood Park

And Surrey’s parks have plenty of places to explore on foot, says Sandi Walton of the Surrey Trekkers walking group.

“You see parks that you would normally drive by,” she said.

Here are some recommended destinations for a walk on Surrey’s wild side:

Tynehead Regional Park Stroll the wide trails along the winding Serpentine River and see the spawning salmon that are raised at Tynehead Fish Hatchery.

Trees and branches are lush with moss and ferns, and giant nurse stumps that now sprout new trees.

This 260-hectare park, bisected by 168 Avenue just south of Highway 1, is operated by Metro Vancouver and features several forest trails and the Raven’s Nest group campsite.

“It’s beautiful with moss hanging off the trees, you’ve got the river running through it and you’ve got the hatchery – people don’t realize how lovely that is,” Walton said.

The east side of the park, with a paved five-kilometre perimeter trail, is ideal for jogging, power walking and cycling. Most west side trails are pedestrian-only.

Recommended access is via 96 Avenue west of 168 Street, or from the north via the new pedestrian and cycling overpass over Highway 1 from Fraser Heights.

This tree lovers’ paradise in southeast Surrey boasts more than 50 species and five towering groves with magnificent specimens.

Twin brothers David and Peter Brown lived in a two-storey treehouse – a replica is the park’s funky hub – and planted the incredible array of trees, starting with Giant Sequoia (Sierra Redwood) seedlings from California in 1893.

Other types include monkey puzzle tree, Atlas cedar and groves of black walnut and Chinese chestnut.

“The variety of trees in that park is spectacular,” Walton said.

The hillside setting includes a large meadow ideal for a picnic but the best way to enjoy it is to follow the nature path around the 80-acre park.

“You can go all the way around that Mud Bay area,” Hepner said.

She recommends Crescent Park, which features a large duck pond and “wonderful trails” that give a sense of nature.

Elgin Park has some Garry Oak trees, the only oak species native to B.C.

Crescent Beach area parks For Surrey’s best vantage point over the ocean, where you can watch for whales and soaring raptors, head southwest to Kwomais Point Park atop the bluffs at the foot of 128 Street.

“There are eagle nests, the whales go right through the channel and right past the lookout at Kwomais,” says Surrey Coun. Linda Hepner, who chairs the city’s parks committee.

“You can’t get a better sunset than at Kwomais with the islands and the sun going down on the water – it’s beyond romantic.”

Head three blocks north of Kwomais to the west end of 15A Avenue to find the “1001 steps” down to the sea, where harbour seals often bask on the rocks and tidal pools teem with sea stars, hermit crabs and sand dollars.

It’s possible to walk the shore from the steps all the way to Crescent Beach or else exit via stairs at the west end of 24 Avenue. Avoid high tide for better beach walking and

You won’t find developed trails in it – yet.

But the province’s TI Corp. is now building salmon enhancement channels and trails as part of work to mitigate for habitat lost elsewhere building the Port Mann Bridge.

A management plan calls for 75 per cent of the Metro-owned park to be kept in its natural state, with trails, a picnic area with shelter, viewing towers, a fishing pier, and eventually a pedestrian overpass of the railway tracks from Fraser Heights.

While waiting for the first stage of

Surrey Bend to be unveiled, you can park at its south edge at the Barnston Island ferry landing at the east end of 104 Avenue and ride across Parson’s Channel for a scenic walk or cycle around the pastoral island.

Serpentine Fen and Mud Bay Birders flock to Serpentine Fen Nature Reserve for the waterfowl, songbirds and raptors that can be spotted.

A 3.5-kilometre nature trail lets visitors walk through fields punctuated by wetlands and water channels and along the bank of the Serpentine River.

Observation towers offer a sheltered view over the provincially managed wildlife area.

Access to the parking lot is at the west end of 44 Avenue off King George Boulevard.

Mud Bay Park (take Colebrook Road west and turn south at 127A Street) is another nearby magnet for migratory birds and offers a three-kilometre dike walk along the Mud Bay shoreline’s tidal marshes and eelgrass beds.

For the Campbells, the opportunity to spend time together was enough of a reason to sign up.

“It was one of the best things that we did as a family,” says Campbell.

They got involved eight years ago when their daughter Alleigra, then 10, became fascinated with nature studies after a school guest, Pollard, taught her class about the environment.

Pollard, a retired teacher, has a background in biology and his passion for sharing knowledge of the natural world didn’t wane with his career. He still gives occasional lessons at local schools as part of Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society, a non-profit environmental group.

For the kids that know him, his gift of education is invaluable, Alleigra says.

“Anyone that has the opportunity to be enthusiastic about something and share that with kids, they really underestimate the effect it can have on them,” says Alleigra, now 18.

She just graduated from high school but she’s still reaping the rewards of her natural science education in terms of social credit among her peers.

“When you’re with people and you end up doing something that’s outside, and people are like, ‘oh, I wonder what that is?’ and you know what it is, it’s kind of cool,” she says.

Her two younger siblings are still active members.

The Nicomekl club serves Surrey, White Rock and Langley, but there are more than 40 Young Naturalists’ clubs across the province.

For $25, families with kids between the ages of five and 14 can sign up for an annual membership and access all of the program offerings.

Blueway program shows how to nagivate local waterways

T

his city is blessed with a variety of navigable waters, adding a whole new dimension to park-based activities.

The Nicomekl River in the south boasts nearly dead calm water, making it the perfect location for an idle float.

Just to the north, the Serpentine River offers a slow, but gentle current – suitable for more avid paddlers.

Then, there’s the extreme currents of the Fraser River, which is better for more conditioned athletes.

In July, 2000, Surrey’s Parks, Recreation and Culture department set out to write a Blueways Master Plan to provide residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy Surrey’s waterfront areas.

In 2001, Surrey commissioned Vancouver’s Lanarc Consultants Ltd. to help design a blueprint.

The firm prepared a 76-page Blueways plan, and recommended the city use the program to not only provide access to recreation, but increase public respect for fish and wildlife, and nearby agricultural property and dykes.

Currently, Surrey is about one-third of the way through implementing the plan.

Along the Nicomeckl River, the city provides parks-related activities during the summer months, when a guide teaches groups how to paddle canoes or kayaks, how to identify wildlife, and how to respect adjoining Agricultural Land Reserve properties.

And while the city and region have had some success in acquiring some boat launch facilities along the Fraser, the idea comes with challenges.

The Fraser has churning currents that can prove extremely hazardous.

The city has put in a new dock at the water’s edge at 130 Street, where people can launch their watercraft, Uhrich says.

“It’s about two to three kilometres down to Brownsville Bar and Tannery, where there’s parking as well,” Uhrich says.

Now it’s about balance, a phrase that recognizes that one’s job and one’s life can positively co-exist.

Technology, for instance, has brought more flexibility in terms of where and when to work, Lazarova says.

On the other hand, it has made it tough to leave work behind.

“People are expected to be available more and to respond to things quickly, so that demarcation between work and life has become thinner,” she says.

And the practice of constantly multi-tasking is costing organizations. Research suggests that for most people, there’s a tipping point where productivity wanes.

“You start getting interrupted, interrupted, interrupted. You actually end up being less-efficient,” Lazarova says.

Williams also suggests turning off smartphones and choosing not to look at emails at least two weekday evenings and Saturday or Sunday, having just one TV in the home, and hand-washing dishes with spouses or family members on weekends.

I

t’s played on ice, and has many of the same rules as hockey.

And take away the fact the players are on sledges – not skates – and sledge hockey is pretty much the same game as Canada’s national winter sport.

“All the rules are the same,” said Bruce Reding, a member of the B.C. Eagles sledge hockey team based out of the Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre.

“Anybody can play. And it’s good exercise, it’s fun. It’s for all skill levels and all ages.”

The sport was designed for athletes with a disability in Sweden in the early 1960s. Players move about on a sledge, a metal frame with two skate blades. The sticks have a blade at one end for shooting, picks on the other to propel the sledge.

“We can shoot left- and righthanded, some of us better than others,” laughed Reding, 34. “The biggest bonus is we have two sticks.”

Sledge hockey is recognized by Hockey Canada, and is a sport in the quadrennial Paralympic Games.

There are three sledge hockey programs in Surrey, with the city’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department partnering with SportAbility BC to run the beginner and interme-

diate programs, and SportAbility BC also offers a high performance program.

“Our group is pretty diverse, I guess. We’ve got guys at the lower

skill level and the higher skill level,” said Reding, who has limited mobility in his ankles and knees caused by spina bifida, a congenital disorder of the spine.

“I’ve been playing for 30 years.

My earliest memories are playing at Cloverdale Arena when I was four, trying to move a 40- to 45-pound sledge.

“When I first started, there were guys a lot quicker than me. So my motivation was to get better and catch them, and the only way you can get better is go after the guys who are better.”

Although international competition, such as the Paralympic Games, are for disabled athletes only, the sledge hockey programs in Surrey are open to everyone looking for some competition and exercise.

“For me, it’s my chest and arms,” replied Reding when asked what part of the body is used the most during a game. “I guess it all depends on your disability and your mobility. Some people say their core gets sore. Some people say they feel it in their legs, but I can’t feel my legs

very much so I wouldn’t know. It all depends, I guess.”

What he does know he is addicted to the game.

“I love hockey, it’s fun. The guys are good, a lot like me,” he said.

“They don’t take things too seriously, they like to have fun. But absolutely, we take the game seriously.”

Seriously enough to form a team, the BC Eagles, which travels to other cities for tournaments such as the Western Canada championship, which the Eagles won in 2011 and 2012.

But even for the less-competitive athletes, sledge hockey can be an enjoyable activity.

“Sledge hockey is gaining in popularity because although the sport is designed for athletes with physical disabilities, it is also open to able-bodied players,” says the SportAbility BC website (http://sportabilitybc.ca). “It represents a great way to unite physically disabled and able-bodied athletes in sport.”

Family cranks it out at BMX track All ages can master bicycle motocross, Surrey parents say

I

nitially, for Courtney Kirby, the key to getting her kids hooked on bicycle motocross (BMX) wasn’t the riding, it was the candy bag.

Standing next to the large dirt and asphalt track located in the 12600 block of 76 Avenue, Kirby and her husband Greg watch as their two children Madison, 8, and Barrett, 6, pedal around the undulating portion of the track known as the rhythm section.

“It was a friend of my daughter’s that first told us about Action BMX,” says Courtney of the Surrey-based racing club.

“Madison started off doing the half-track when she was only five, but after the race they get a free candy bag, and that’s what got her hooked on the sport. Now she wins almost every race she enters.”

Soon Barrett decided he wanted to try racing and began riding the course sporting training wheels on his custom single-speed BMX bike.

Both Courtney and Greg began volunteering at the track, with Greg on maintenance – picking up rocks and raking the track – and Courtney in the concession.

However it wasn’t long before both parents grew tired of just watching and decided to join in on the competition themselves.

After some friendly prodding from other parents, the two borrowed bikes and decided to give the sport a try.

“I like to bike, it’s good exercise,” says Greg, who now competes in the over-40 age category. “We can all do it together. They’re aren’t many sports where you can compete and ride together, so it’s a good family activity.”

The major costs involved in the sport are the bikes, but they can often be purchased second-hand when other riders upgrade along with a helmet, long-sleeve shirt and gloves. There are also loaner bikes to get newcomers to the sport started, and then they’re five dollars a race after that.

“For us it’s great,” says Greg.

“We like to camp as well in the summer, so you only pay for the races that you enter, not for a

full season.”

Races are held throughout the Lower Mainland on tracks in Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and the North Shore, so your commitment is determined by how much you want to travel.

The club also hosts free learnto-race clinics every Monday throughout the season.

“It’s not as easy as you might think,” says Greg with a laugh.

“It’s all technique. Some guys can make it all the way around the track without pedaling at all and beat me.”

Action BMX is a family-friendly, Cycling BC-sanctioned volunteer organization that runs from the end of March to the end of September. A yearly fee for licence and insurance is required for each rider at just under $50. All ages are welcome and no experience is necessary.

BMX racing has been an Olympic sport since 2008 in Beijing.

Clubbing it in the city Surrey has plenty of golf facilities for novice and seasoned players

rom hitting a bucket of balls, to playing a challenging 72 holes, golfers of all abilities can find a facility where they can play or practise in Surrey.

There are six championship courses, a number of executive courses, and a few pitch-and-putt layouts, along with driving ranges throughout the city.

And most, regardless of being a nine-hole par-3 or a full length-18hole course, offer golf lessons. Check out some of the city’s greens:

Championship courses • Guildford Golf and Country Club, 7929 152 St. A par-72 course that challenges golfers with creeks and small lakes, Guildford has a range of 5,216 to 6,502 yards. The Guildford course has earned a 3.5 rating (out of five) by golfnow.com • Hazelmere Golf Course, 18150 8 Ave. Ranked among the top 10 golf

• Surrey Golf Club, 7700 168 St. Built in the early 1970s, the par-72 main course challenges golfers with water hazards and bunkers, and has a distance in excess of 6,800 from the blue tees, and 5,900 from the red tees. The 18th hole, at 630 yards, is the longest par-five in B.C.

Executive courses • Eaglequest Golf, 7778 152 St. A mid-length par-65 course that challenges golfers in a tree-lined setting and a creek that comes into play on several holes, Eaglequest is a combination of par three and par four holes totaling 3,481 to 4,165 yards.

• Nico-Wynd Golf Course. 2601 Nico Wynd Dr. A nine-hole, two-pin course on the banks of the Nicomekl River, Nico-Wynd is a par-70 course ranging from 4,694 to 5,906 yards.

• Surrey Golf Club, 7700 168 St. Willows Nine was constructed in the mid 1980s, and features one parfive hole on the par-32, 1,983-yard nine-hole course.

• Meridian Golf Par 3, 1054 168 St. Once a hazelnut farm, Meridan Golf Par 3 opened in 1959, and features one par-four hole on the 2,15 2-yard course.

• Sunrise Executive Golf, 5640 188 St. A nine-hole par-three course with two tees on each hole for a 18-hole layout. Yardage ranges from 75 to 210 yards.

• Panorama Links, 5228 King George Blvd.

A nine-hole Scottish-Links style course designed for beginners of experienced golfers needing to work on their short game.

rom quiet spaces to concert halls, the modern library has been transformed into a gathering place for those with leisure time on their hands.

With so much information available online and with the proliferation of ebooks, people are changing the way they access information and think about the library.

The programming available at Surrey Librar-

ies is a result of extensive public consultation that took place last year, said Chief Librarian Melanie Houlden.

In addition to a great collection of books, in print and digital, people said they wanted more opportunities for social engagement.

This transition isn’t unique to Surrey, but the City Centre Library is a leading facility for innovative new programs because of its design.

“Surrey has had the ability to move forward faster, probably because of our new building. It gives us a space to do things differently,” said Houlden.

When you walk through the doors, books aren’t the first things you see anymore. There are open public spaces, including a coffee shop.

Books are still present, along the edges, but they’re no longer the primary focus. Instead, libraries are taking a more holistic approach to literacy and learning.

“There’s been a lot of research that has both revealed and reinforced the concept that literacy doesn’t just mean your ability to read,” said Anneka Homfeld, youth services technician at the City Centre Library.

“It includes comprehension, but it also includes things like numerical literacy, and special literacy, and digital literacy.”

Homfeld leads Teen Anime Club, where teens with an interest in anime, manga and Japanese culture can hang out once a month and meet others with similar interests.

Another new program is the Teen Writers’ Circle, where teens passionate about writing come and bounce ideas off each other, do writing exercises, and learn from guest speakers and published authors.

Surrey Libraries is also focusing on social issues more than before. Working with the city’s Poverty Reduction Team, staff have created Internet-only cards for the homeless or

people who are transitory and have no other way to access the Internet.

For newcomers, access to technology, English-as-a-Second-Language learning materials and employment classes are available. Settlement workers are on hand and can help with housing, banking, filling out forms and all the different stages of getting settled.

“It’s a huge benefit to us because we are not really trained professionals to provide and help people with these services,” said Ilona Stachura, City Centre librarian.

She explained that while people have always seen libraries as a place where they can get help, they were often referred to other agencies. Now library staff can refer them down the hall, or upstairs.

Embracing creative culture is another way that libraries have changed.

The Maker Movement is a big hit that teaches how to make things, like doing your own programming and learning about the insides of computers. Video editing software has been installed in the computer lab so people can make their own movies, and computer classes and technical services are readily available.

“The quiet library really doesn’t exist in the way that it used to,” says Houlden.

Perhaps the best example of that? Westcoast Harmony Chorus is scheduled for a performance at Christmas time, and kids are invited to come in and join in on singing carols.
