I

t couldn’t have been any more of a typical West Coast day.

Rain pounded the windshield as my RAV climbed the rabbit trail driveway. Fog grew thicker and nestled between the arbutus and mossy rock bluff.

And over the SUV’s speakers came Jon and Roy’s Little Bit of Love.

I was about to meet two people who had put more than just a little bit of love into my destination.

Tonya and Leon Gaber poured their hearts and souls into this idyllic retreat perched high above

the Cowichan River — a place that represents a kick-back, West Coast lifestyle drenched in an obvious environmentally friendly mantra.

The making of the Stoltz Bluff Eco-Retreat has been a long, hard journey for the Victoria couple, but a satisfying one, to say the least.

“The odds were really stacked against us,” said 35-year-old ecologist Leon, of the cob-structure guest house which officially opened its doors last fall.

“When (Tonya) hit me with the idea, I thought ‘We’re not stupid. We could probably do it.”

The genesis of the idea came from a common urban dilemma: the couple found itself in need of a supplemental income. But instead of following the common path of renting out a basement suite, they wanted to try something different.

“And my motto has been if others can do it, it can be done,” said 34-year-old Tonya.

They built their own retreat.

from previous page “The decision to build a cob ‘mud’ house for us was a logical one,” said Tonya. “People who know us often find it strange that we chose to build in this style, which often comes with the stigma of a mushroomshaped ‘hippy’ house. We always tell them that we did the research, a lot of it, on many, many different building options, and cob just made the most sense.”

from previous page The couple drove to the site and walked up the one-kilometre driveway. Upon reaching the bluff, that has remarkable 360 degrees views of the valley, Tonya said Leon knew it was “it.”

Unfortunately, the listing disappeared.

“We were heartbroken,” said Tonya.

They persevered and drove to the site again. This time the gate was open. They were met about halfway up the driveway by owner Glyn Bailey, who at first treated them as if they were trespassing.

“So we explained we’re actually interested in buying and immediately his eyes lit up,” said Tonya.

But finding a willing seller was just the first small bump of several.

No one in Canada had ever secured a mortgage for a cob structure. No one wanted to appraise their house. No financial institute wanted to lend them money.

“We thought (our biggest hurdle) would be with the building inspectors and the municipality actually approving what we wanted to do — the first structural cob home in the CVRD — but no, they were great,” said Tonya.

Several appraisers agreed to view, then cancelled at the last minute before they found one willing to take a stand.

“No appraiser around here had ever assigned value to a cob home before,” explained Tonya. “Without an appraiser stating the value of our home and property, no bank could give us a mortgage, so it all hinged on this.” continued next page 2013 autumn

from previous page Eventually, they worked a deal with the owner, a “vendor mortgage” on a very tight, one-year deadline and convinced Islands Savings to become the mortgageholder.

The trepidation came from the unusual nature of the guest home.

It is built from a mixture of clay and sand from Shawnigan Lake, straw from a local farm, and pumice from the Pemberton area.

Everything about it is eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and about 80 per cent of its materials were salvaged.

“Almost everything, every inch was built by us,” said Leon, noting his father and brother camped out with them through the summer to help as well.

“A lot of people went the extra mile and took on our labour of love,” said Tonya.

The 1,000-square-foot interior includes salvaged old-growth posts and beams, a low-flow dual flush toilet, a shower with a built-in bench, finished with natural lime plaster, an energy-efficient fridge, full-size gas stove, and a huge cast-iron sink.

Another key feature is its Rumford woodburning fireplace faced with a natural rammed earth design.

is supplied by solar panels, water comes from an on-site well. The roof is set up for future rain water collection. And waste water is not waste at all, but fed into a constructed wetland which purifies it and makes it available to the surrounding plants and trees.

“Our main hope for building in the way we did was to give people the most ecofriendly vacation option possible,” said Tonya. “Our hope is our guests will find our place to be a unique and comfortable experience, and that it may open people’s minds a little more.

“It was built for people to go back to having that simple kind of life, where they can get away from it all, no television, just books, and curled up in a blanket, with maybe some wine and some strawberries.”

Now that their dream retreat’s complete, the Gabers want to eventually embrace a phase two: five or six one-room, cottage style retreats, spaced out on the property far enough apart they’re still private.

That, and eventually building their perfect retirement home on one special chunk.

Should you look?

“There have been times when we’ve been at the farm market, and we’re walking through the crowds and I can just hear in the background whispers: ‘Look at that little girl,’” said Jenny Garlini. “We’ve had people ask to take her photo. And so it’s really about the dialogue and patience more than anything.

“My philosophy has been it’s about the awareness. I want to be able to give Gabi the right tools to be able to explain herself one day.”

Three-year-old Gabi Garlini has achondroplasia, the most common type of dwarfism.

For her parents Jenny and Bailey, and

her brother, five-year-old Porter, it’s been a huge learning curve — not only with their personal daily challenges, but with dealing with the reactions.

“Sometimes it’s the parents who need the support sometimes more than the children,” said Bailey, noting from time to time he’s had to get his “Papa Bear” on and ask people to move along when approaching his daughter.

“And sometimes you just want to get your groceries like everyone else,” said Tammy Isaachsen.

Tammy is the single mother of 22-monthold Declan Forcier and five-year-old Makenna. Declan has been diagnosed with the same dwarfism as Gabi.

Achondroplasia affects about 70 per cent of individuals with dwarfism.

There are however, over 200 distinct types. More than 80 per cent of individuals with dwarfism have parents and siblings of average height — something that applies to both the Garlini and Isaachsen families. Achondroplasia occurs in approximately one in every 25,000 to 40,000 births and in B.C., where there are about 45,000 births every year — one to two babies a year.

Oddly enough, the only two Cowichan families affected live 90 seconds down the road from each other in Cowichan Bay. The Garlinis moved to the bay a year ago from the Okanagan. continued next page autumn 2013

The families were introduced by the Little People of British Columbia Society, a group that represents and supports individuals with dwarfism and their families.

“I was told that a family was moving to Vancouver Island that had a little girl with dwarfism. When I contacted this family to introduce myself, I was stunned when I heard where they were moving.”

Each family sought out LPBC shortly after their children were born.

The Garlinis and Isaachsen couldn’t say enough good things about the society. Meeting other little people and hearing their stories has been the most beneficial.

“It’s not uncommon to have members with other issues. Some are proportional but just small. There’s a lot of different things,” said Bailey. “It reminds us every day this is not a bad thing. It’s like, ‘Holy cow, it could be a lot worse.’”

Gabi and Declan are both very healthy.

Nonetheless, appointments with various specialists are frequent. Some include orthodontics, hearing, speech, occupational therapy, sleep, and having an MRI performed of the brain.

Appointments are most prevalent the first year after birth.

Both families have come to grips with having a long road ahead.

“You have to think about things like door knobs, stools, light switches and step ladders,” said Bailey. “It’s all things that will help them become independent.”

Even now, things like finding shoes that fit Declan properly is a tough task.

BOMB girl cowichan’s own carves an intriguing career in the tough world of acting 18

t’s easy to compare Ali Liebert to Marilyn Monroe; her gorgeous physique, flirtatious eyelashes, and signature mole are eerily similar, albeit with a punk twist.

But good looks are just one part of why Liebert is one of Canada’s most exciting television stars.

A decade of hard work travelling between Vancouver, Toronto, and Los Angeles, acting in short films, TV pilots, and feature films has helped Liebert build a solid resume that has set the stage for her inevitable rise to stardom.

She is best known for her role in Global TV’s award-winning series Bomb Girls after captivating audiences as Betty, the macho, cigarette-smoking, lovelorn lesbian factory worker.

She was disappointed when the show was cancelled after two seasons despite winning three Canadian Screen Awards and an esteemed Gracie award for Outstanding Drama.

But it didn’t take long for her to be cast in Lost Girl, a popular Canadian science-fiction television drama in its fourth season, which airs in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. Liebert can do it all. She is a professional singer, dancer, and she does a wicked impression of Liza Minnelli.

She’s ambitious too: with the help of her peers, she recently created her own production company, Sociable Films—their first movie, After Party, will be released during the Whistler Film Festival in December.

Her versatility, sophistication, and wry humour give us the impression Liebert has the talent and chutzpah required to make it in show business, in Canada and south of the border.

And to think it all started when she was a girl growing up in Cowichan Station, and attending Frances Kelsey Secondary School.

I spoke with Liebert on the phone while she was walking her puppy, Joplin, in Stanley Park one sunny August afternoon.

MM: How did you get into acting?

AL: I grew up being precocious and I took dance and singing from a young age. But Roger Carr at Kelsey took it to the next level. We were doing full plays and musicals. The level of craftsmanship that went into those productions, for me, I’d never experienced anything like that. It definitely felt exciting and solidified that I wanted to do it for a profession.

MM: Did you know what a life as a professional actor looked like?

AL: I had no idea how to get into it or what that meant.

Because I grew up doing musical theatre, and then I went to musical-theatre school after graduation, I guess I thought I was going in that direction. I didn’t know how to get into doing TV and film when I was in high school. It was totally foreign to me.

MM: Where did you go to musical-theatre school?

AL: I went to the Canadian College of Performing Arts. I loved the training that I got there. They really do prepare kids for the real world. It’s really hard to figure out how to be successful in show business unless you grew up in a big city and it’s obvious what to do.

MM: Or your parents are connected in some way.

AL: Right, but if you’re just a regular family, show business is pretty confusing.

MM: What advice would you give young kids in Cowichan who are wishing for more? Is it who you know?

AL: I honestly don’t think it’s who you know. I think it’s training and stamina and tenacity and desire. My acting teacher, Andrew MacIlroy, he is a dear friend and mentor.

I’ve been studying with him maybe a decade now. He’s helped shape my career. Take the opportunity to train with guest teachers from Vancouver. And I think also I’m a good example you don’t have to think you’re missing anything.

Just by having a great childhood and growing up helps. I didn’t start doing any TV work until I was 21. continued next page

from previous page MM: Being surrounded by a loving family that makes you feel safe is as beneficial as growing up in Hollywood and in commercials when you’re five?

AL: I just feel like everything happens the way it happens for different people.

When I first got to Vancouver, I was really stressed out. I was comparing myself to people who already had an agent and a foot-long resume and they were the same age as me. But honestly, it’s just not a race and everybody’s path is their own. Just continue to really love it and play different characters.

Do different types of performances. I’m so glad I had singing and dancing as an outlet. I wasn’t forced to sell any products on TV. I was just running around creating performances that were fun.

MM: When you get to Vancouver and you’re new, are you taking free acting jobs and working as a barista? How do you live?

AL: Oh my goodness, I think I’ve had 12 jobs on Robson Street alone. My first few years in Vancouver I was working two jobs. I worked at Starbucks from 5 a.m. till noon and slept for a few hours then was a hostess at Milestones from 5 till 11 at night. That was... um... well, that was character building. At the same time I was chipping away at my acting career. The first few years I started out, it’s not like the auditions were coming fast and furious. This decade that I’ve spent in film and TV has been a very slow, steady progression. Some people’s careers are totally different. Some have a lightning strike and their career trajectory is altered forever, but for me it’s been lucky, it’s been a slow, steady growth.

MM: Is stardom a goal?

AL: No, if I wanted to be famous I would have moved to Los Angeles at 15 years old and stuck it out. I definitely have ambition and I have some pretty lofty career goals. I think it’s really important to dream and aspire. There are directors I’d want to work with or series I’d love to be part of as opposed to wanting to be on a red carpet. That’s not really about acting.

MM: The public can equate celebrity to success. From within the industry, is it viewed that way?

AL: It’s very different how celebrity is viewed in Canada and the States. In a way, it would be better if Canada had a more-established star system. There’s a glass ceiling here. You can only become so famous in Canada and then people move to Los Angeles or New York to go to the next level. I think that’s a shame. I wish we did have a star system here so we could keep our talent here and also promote our artists; so the talented artists we have could be the leads of our future films.

The way it is now, celebrity does mean something because it’s box-office sales and distribution sales. It all comes down to money. The more famous you are, the more reassurance you give the investors.

That’s why it is important. I’ve been to the Toronto Film Festival and lots of press events for Bomb Girls. I’ve been on red carpets and it’s really fun to put on a fancy dress but it’s another part of the job of being an actor.

MM: So it’s work.

AL: Yeah, it’s work but I still love my work. But I don’t think “Oh, poor me.”

To be honest, going to set—when I’m shooting something—I’ve yet to say, “I’m going to work today.” I still think it’s just magical and amazing that I get to act for a living.

MM: Is acting paying for your life now? I assume you don’t have to work at Starbucks anymore.

AL: It has been for the past few years.

MM: That has to feel pretty good.

You’re still surrounded by peers who may not have made it. Do you feel privileged?

AL: I don’t feel privileged. I’ve worked really hard to be where I am. That being said, I’m unemployed and looking for the next thing. It’s just a really humbling job. When you’re working you feel like a million bucks and then the job ends and you have to get out and audition and have an open heart and go out for the next thing. MM: It can be hard doing what you love. Is it worth it?

AL: Every few years I would say to myself: “I’m whatever age, I’m broke, I’m miserable, I should just quit.” But I could never quit. I feel like I’ve been acting since I was five. And I do love it; I love performing.

That’s part of the reason I started my production company with two of my friends. Sometimes it’s hard when you’re trying to do your art but you’re waiting for other people to give you permission to do it. You have so much you want to share but they have to pick you and that can become discouraging. We started Sociable Films because we wanted to act and create. Nicholas (Carella) is a writer/ producer/brilliant actor and Michelle (Ouellet) is a brilliant director and editor, so we made a movie called After Party.

It’s pretty exciting. My friend Erica Caroll, who is also from Duncan, is in it.

It’s kind of crazy because when I was in high school, Erica’s dad worked at Kelsey and used to tell me about his daughter who was working on the X-Files and The Outer Limits, and that blew my mind.

I was so inspired. I couldn’t believe somebody from Duncan was on TV. And through circumstance she turned out to be one of my very best friends. It’s pretty incredible. When the acting bug bites you, as it has for me, it’s kind of like a for-life thing.

MM: Bomb Girls was discontinued.

Was that devastating for you guys?

AL: They took so long to make the decision, I was starting to get a bit weary.

I wasn’t entirely shocked. Apparently we’re doing a movie in the fall to wrap up the characters. I hope that happens because we just adore each other. I miss Betty and the whole gang. It was disappointing, but like anything, after giving myself a break to be sad about it for a while, I realized everything good it brought me. Betty has turned out to be a really important gay character on TV. autumn 2013

I was home a few weeks ago and it was just glorious.

It’s definitely been bittersweet. It was the biggest blessing, but I was crushed.

(Fellow Bomb Girls actor) Jodi Balfour and I were driving to Vegas from L.A. and we were two hours into our road trip and her agent calls and Jodi does the slitting throat with her finger on her neck, and I didn’t know what she was talking about.

Then she told me, and it definitely made for a long road trip.

MM: You say you’re unemployed now but we think you’re employed because we see you on TV. AL: I understand that. I’m in a down period right now trying to line up what the next three or four months are going to look like. There are pilots and new shows coming up that I’ve been auditioning for. I’ve got a couple of things out there, but nothing is confirmed. It’s just the waiting. I’m not a patient person.

And this business just forces you to be patient because you can’t control it.

MM: Then there’s delay. You do the work in July and when the show is aired later in the year, you get recognition —yet you’ve moved on to the next project.

AL: I don’t really watch too much of what I do. I haven’t even seen all of Bomb Girls. It’s not my favourite thing.

I’m generally hard on myself. Maybe when I get older and I can be a bit more kind to myself and enjoy the experience, sure, but I’m not there.

from previous page I’m always looking to see how I could improve. That’s what I love about acting.

It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Trying to figure out how to work my instrument better. How I can deepen my performance? If I watch myself and really think, “I missed that moment” or “that joke fell flat.”

It’s about trying to unlock the mystery of it. For me, the most important thing is trying to be kind and knowing I did my best on the day. It’s a pretty highstress situation. You don’t get another chance to do those scenes again. Once you do them, it’s over and captured forever. It’s exciting. That could be positive too. If you’re just feeling it and everything is magical, it will be captured forever. You do live theatre and that epic 24

performance is left in the wall of the theatre. There are pros and cons to both.

MM: What about film? Is there a difference in terms of ambition? Is being successful in film the ultimate?

AL: I’ve had a chance to be part of some really interesting films. Most have premiered at TIFF, like Sook Yun Lee’s film Year of the Carnivore. I feel like I’ve had the chance to be part of some beautiful, unique stories but they come around less often. Vancouver and Toronto have so many TV series. And I’ll continue making films myself. I don’t put film above TV. TV is so good. TV is like mini films these days.

MM: I was watching your YouTube video Teenie and Queenie. It’s hysterical. Have you done any comedy?

AL: I did a pilot a few years ago called Wolf Canyon that was really funny. It didn’t get picked up unfortunately, but that was I’d say the most comedic thing I’ve done. Now that I think about it, the past few years have been just really dramatic roles. A few of these things I’ve been auditioning for lately are comedies.

Fingers and toes crossed. It would be a really nice change of pace. If I got to do comedy, that’s where Los Angeles has a lot more opportunities than Canada.

Hopefully we can make some more excellent comedies in Canada.

MM: When you go out do people recognize you?

AL: Rarely. Like once a month maybe.

It’s always some really lovely Bomb Girls fan. I’m happy to chat. My hair is a different colour. I’ve got it back to being autumn 2013

blond. I look a little different. I think if we’re not in period clothes we’re not recognized. People aren’t used to seeing Betty in a summer frock.

MM: What about home do you crave?

AL: My mom used to be a secretary at Frances Kelsey and she passed away in 2005. It’s just my dad who still lives in Duncan. It’s just nice to go for walks. We grew up with two Labs and walking in the woods was always a big part of my childhood. Now we take Joplin to rub noses with the donkeys at Providence, or Cherry Point, or the Cowichan River.

The valley is just so peaceful. It’s a break from the city. I was home a few weeks ago and it was just glorious. Feeling the wind on your face and the air smells good.

MM: Would you live here again?

AL: I wouldn’t mind having a place on the island that I could come to if I ever got on a series that was going for a while and I enjoyed having a few months off.

If I knew it was returning for another season and spending a few months on the island, that would be lovely.

She’s scared herself through three novels that have grabbed readers’ attention — and landed the south Cowichan native on the New York Times and international bestseller lists.

But speaking from her home in Cedar, Stevens simply aims to keep honing her addictive style with characters, plots, places, and her fear-based formula propelling folks to the next page.

“It generally starts with an interesting premise that’s scary to me,” the frank wordsmith said when asked how she hooks her flock of fans. “It’s partly skill, and you can improve that craft. It’s hard to describe what you just do — you just scare yourself.

STEVENS “I tend to be a what-if person. What terrible thing could happen? What if this thing happens, and how would these people deal with it? What if something worse happened?”

“It was a story that I kept hearing in my head; that I felt I had to write.”

That brand of suspenseful surmising surfaces in her third novel, Always Watching (released in June), where shrink Nadine Lavoie faces her demons by treating tormented head cases.

“I was aware women are vulnerable in any situation; I’m cautious of where to park my car. Being a realtor, I was aware you’re alone in the (show) homes, and things could happen.”

Stevens’ books are punctuated by closets stuffed with plenty of skeletons to max nail-biting.

“I end a chapter with a suspenseful note,” she said of one of her addictive devices.

“I don’t try to be like anyone else. You have to have a natural affinity (for writing) then improve your craft.”

Still, Stevens had the nightmarish knack from book one, Still Missing.

When it won the 2011 International Thriller of the Year Award in the Best First Novel category — and has been published in some 30 countries — Stevens had found her calling.

“I wanted (writing) to be my job. It’s what I want to do more than anything else.”

It also spawned her penchant for projecting bad stuff happening to her characters.

Her debut terrifier turns on ‘What-if a female realtor — such as Stevens was back then — is kidnapped by a psycho and dragged to a remote cabin?’

Daily life turns terrible with her fiction’s wicked little wrinkles.

Stevens knew she could write, but accepted it wouldn’t be easy.

“The first one took four years,” she said of Still Missing. “I kept rewriting it, but now I work on outlines. I talk with my publisher and discuss (plot etc.), and brainstorm.

When I have an approved outline, I start writing.”

She spent seven weeks oiling the outline for her current, untitled, fifth book due in 2015. continued next page

A

profound sense of otherworldliness permeates the still morning air at Fairbridge, a neighbourhood of some three-dozen buildings lolling amid pastoral beauty two miles south of Duncan.

Perhaps it’s the early mist’s fingertips gliding among English oaks, hazelnuts, tulip trees or Port Orford cedars that line the country road; or shadows clinging to the windows of converted cottages.

Maybe it’s the two exquisite angels carved from local maple by Shawnigan’s George Gibson 75 years ago kneeling atop the rood screen in the community’s beautiful chapel; or the chapel’s clock and bell, among the oldest existing in Canada, built in Britain in 1875.

Perchance it’s the blue lady sometimes seen flitting among the trees.

“Some people claim to have seen her – but there are no ghosts here,” smiles Ron Smith, secretary-treasurer of Fairbridge Chapel Heritage Society.

Smith, a former CVRD director of planning and an early owner of a home in this secluded, well-heeled community that was once the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School, should know.

He’s watched its development from the beginning.

Ghosts or not, there’s a distinct feeling of unique history here: between 1935 and 1950 or so, 329 youngsters passed through a sometimes callous experiment of child migration from mostly industrial, impoverished Britain to learning and hard work on the 416-hectare farm near Cowichan Station. Another 120,000 had scattered since 1830 to other parts of Canada and to similar schools in Australia and Rhodesia. continued next page autumn 2013

from previous page They lived in cottages with names like St. George’s, Queen Mary, Hill and Richards that still line the shadowed drive; they ate in a communal dining room, studied in a school on site; attended Sunday services in the 300-seat Anglican chapel; and visited the farm’s hospital when sick.

The boys learned to farm. The girls followed domestic pursuits and responsibilities.

Some flourished at the school whose crest of oak leaves surrounding a beaver and Latin motto Industria et Veritate goaded them to work hard and always tell the truth.

Some did not.

“Some people had a decent time while people like me didn’t,” says Roddy Mackay, 79, a Fairbridge student between 1941 and 1951 and now president of Fairbridge Canada Association, former students who gathered last month in the Cowichan Valley for their biennial reunion.

After what he calls an abandonment in Edinburgh, Scotland, the seven-year-old was sent with other child migrants to the farm managed on the principles founded

by South African philanthropist Kingsley Fairbridge in the early 1900s.

“I was sad for at least the first five years.

It depended on which cottage you were in, and it went beyond strictness,” says the Monterey, CA resident who often ran away from the bullies and his cottage mother for a swim in the sparkling waters of the Koksilah River at the edge of the fields.

Long-time buddy John Hardy, also 79 and former FCA president, arrived in 1947 from Britain’s industrial north.

“My mother had a hard time giving me up, but she knew there was no future for me in Newcastle,” says the Cowichan Bay resident.

Later, Mackay joined the Canadian Army while Hardy became a journalist and teacher. Another Fairbridge boy was the late Johnny Cowans, popular local teacher and educational administrator.

Day students attended the school until the 1960s.

“After that the school just sat there by the side of Koksilah Road. Rats ate the books,” explains Smith. It was finally demolished, along with the dining room, hospital and manual training building, after the property was acquired by Victoria’s Bellamy Properties in 1975.

“The day library, an original 1885 school building, the school office, the chapel and 17 cottages were saved,” says Smith, who moved into the school’s former office in 1978.

Now, some 100 adults call Fairbridge home. The voices of their children echo through the avenue’s trees, acquired from Essendale Mental Hospital in the 1930s. Planted by Fairbridge students, 52 are described by plaques.

“And we bought the chapel for one dollar,” Smith says proudly of the sturdy cedar-clad building, built in 1939, whose 34 pews and additional choir stalls are made of locally produced knot-free fir planks. Its original glowing stained glass windows were re-installed in 2001.

Smith looks to a time when the chapel, now used only for the Old Fairbridgians’ short biennial service and the occasional wedding, will be seen by more people.

“Fairbridge is a unique place with a unique history,” he muses. “It deserves to be seen.”

ragrances of garlic, cilantro, and maybe some curry, greet one’s nose when walking into downtown Duncan’s Old Firehouse Wine Bar. You hear strains of jazz.

At the long, wooden bar under subdued lighting, exotic cocktails are being mixed by owner Jeff Downey. Server Tanya Ablonczy’s delivering steaming plates of food to customers sitting by colourfully original art. Sizzling and clattering happens somewhere in the kitchen where chef Rob Martin’s creating over a hot stove.

But wait; this is supposed to be a wine bar.

Looking above the bar sit dozens of bottles of vino — reds, whites, rosés. They’re among OFWB’s list of 60 wines.

Another 18 sit in a By-the-glass cooling and dispensing system; bottleneck hoses keeping staleness out, and fizz in.

The Old Firehouse Wine Bar (at 40 Ingram St.) is a mature, relaxed place to talk and meet friends, and strangers, without noise, cheap booze or hustle.

Downey explained how he used a “four-prong attack” of wine, cocktails, tapas and entertainment to launch his tony, yet laid-back bistro offering “sophisticated dining, and just going-out time” in what was Lucky beer country.

“We’re truly committed to doing lots of events too; films, host lectures, book launches, poetry readings, live music with jazz or a singer-songwriter focus — plus wine tastings, pairing events and some special dinners. People are gathering in social settings, and Craig Street Brew Pub set off what was to come downtown.”

Renewed core vitality lured culture vultures to the Old Firehouse. An expansion to 99 seats, from the current 36, by popular demand could happen by Christmas.

“We’ll have lots of nooks and crannies. It’ll be a game changer,” said Downey, who has city hall’s blessing, and awaits Victoria’s permit nod.

Downey’s Gallowglass Books (now home to the wine bar) was foundering: the heat pump broke; bills were mounting; chain bookstores were pulling business away; pink slips went to his workers.

But Downey’s magic bullet was his rich experience in the hospitality industry.

“I visualized a wine bar one night. I was tossing around the notion of a wine bar with a tapas focus — it just hadn’t stuck yet.

“I also realized I had great experience on two sides,” he said of business, books and bistros. “That fired up my engines.”

Extra space means hosting “events we haven’t been able to do,” he said. “It’s about sharing and coming up with ideas.”

By Christmas 2011, he’d lugged volumes of books across Lois Lane and into a Canada Building space to allow wine bar renovations.

Ideas behind the wine bar’s success impressed expansionbacker, and long-time Duncan city councillor Sharon Jackson.

Enter serendipity.

“It’s going to be a remarkable addition to downtown because he can hold events, like book and poetry readings, maybe film showings. It’ll add so much to what people can do in downtown.”

Teetotaler Downey pictured creating this vision off city square long before opening his trendy, popular place on March 9, 2012. But he was in financial trouble three years ago.

Gallowglass survived as a book store next door, and Downey focused on uncorking an upscale eatery with downtown growing as a cultural-culinary destination.

He cited Hudson’s On First, The Royal Dar, Bistro 161, Just Jake’s, and Na Trang restaurants — helped by Duncan Garage and Showroom traffic.

Food-wise, Pat said the wine bar serves “nice things you wouldn’t necessarily make at home.”

“It’s not the usual fries and wings,” added Barry.

No way, agreed chef Martin. “You can get a caesar salad anywhere. I want to give people something different, something they don’t get that often; fun to work at, and fun to eat. You want to enjoy your experience, rather than just a meal.”

His philosophy of seasonal, local produce and other ingredients surfaces in oysters and mussels, while he reaches farther afield.

Liz Steward is the co-owner (alongside husband Lance) of one of the valley’s favourite restaurants. Now with another location in Lake Cowichan (Jake’s on the Lake), and two teenage daughters, Liz is one busy lady.

This month we sat down with Liz to find out what she loves about Cowichan, why she chose to live here, and the one major

‘to-do’ on her bucket list.

Name: Liz Steward Age: 46 How long have you lived in Cowichan?

22 years.

What brought you to the Cowichan Valley and what keeps you here?

We came up here to open Jake’s. We were working with the Colemans and they were the ones who said to come open a restaurant in Duncan. Being in business is what keeps us here too.

What is your claim to fame?

Probably the hugging! Also the restaurant — the food of course, and, more recently, the beer.

What’s your favourite comfort food?

Meat and potatoes! I always go back to that.

What is your favourite item on your autumn 2013

own menu?

A simply grilled steak and garlic mashed potatoes with a good portion of vegetables. I always keep it simple.

What is your current passion?

Right now it’s probably quality of service. It’s something I’ve really been working hard on lately. I’m a real karma believer and I think what you put out there comes back to you. I’m working on teaching that to my staff. I just want to make Cowichan an even nicer place to be.

What’s on your bucket list?

My bucket list would be to take a ‘real’ holiday. I’ve only had two holidays since we opened 22 years ago. I’d like to go travelling in Europe and to Australia. For me it’s about travel and food and wine and family.

What is your favourite Cowichan memory?

I had my kids here and the beautiful thing about having kids is how many people it connects you with. It’s made me really be in touch with what’s going on here and has opened my eyes to that.

What does the future hold for you and the restaurant?

Constant change and adaption to what’s going on in the market is important. We always have to stay fresh and stay new. We still have hopes and aspirations to have a brewery — bottling and kegging with the same recipes we use here.

How do you relax and unwind?

My favourite thing to do is visit with friends and have dinner together. I also walk every day with my dog, which is a very good stress release!

What advice do you have for new business owners or people opening a restaurant?

Know that it’s going to take a while and be very patient. You have to go into (business) with a really broad mind and realize you have to sacrifice yourself for your customers and staff and then with time, it comes back.

Know that it’s going to take a while. Be patient.
