2014 Silverado
W
ith the all-new Silverado 1500-series, Chevrolet appears to have done its homework and paid close attention to what buyers are looking for to haul and tow their stuff. It looks familiar, but there are more powerful/ efficient engines as well as improvements in nearly every other area. In front, the twin stacked headlights remain, but the grille is now much more prominent and tougher looking. Behind the tailgate, the handy “Corner Step” bumper has recessed footholds that, combined with built-in handholds inside the box, make accessing the bed much easier. The doors are now “inlaid” into the body, which cuts wind noise at highway speeds. Inside, the dashboard and control panel that houses the optional 20-centimetre touch screen are positioned in a tidy pod for easy viewing and all of the oversized knobs and switches are work-glove-friendly and clearly marked. All body styles -- regular, extended Double Cab (now featuring front-hinged rear doors with outside handles) and four-door Crew Cab -- are attached to reworked frames with more high-strength steel, extra bracing for stiffness and improved body mounts that help isolate road nose and

I
t has been years in the making, but General Motors finally pushed the reset button on one of its most endearing brands. Chevrolet’s enhanced flagship now shares the same platform with Cadillac’s top-positioned XTS, but its appearance is far more broad-shouldered and defined than that of the Caddy. There’s more to admire inside with a highly sculpted gauge layout and control panel. An available 20-centimetre (diagonal) touch-screen above the audio and ventilation controls provides access to the Impala’s navigation, phone and infotainment systems and flips up to reveal a secret compartment for small valuables and your USB music device or smart phone that plugs right in. The Impala features some serious cabin-noise abatement, including active noise cancellation for four-cylinder Impalas. It uses hidden microphones and a special control module to create opposing sound waves sent through the car’s speakers to cancel out low-enginespeed droning. The four-cylinder reference might shock diehard Impala fans who could have never imagined such an engine in a full-size sedan. Fact is there are two avail-
able: a base 195-horsepower 2.5-litre; and a 182-horsepower 2.4-litre “eAssist” powerplant. The latter works in tandem with a belt-driven, liquid-cooled 15-horsepower electric motor/generator (replacing the traditional alternator) that feeds off a lithiumion battery pack located behind the rear seat. There’s also a stop/start system that kills the engine when the vehicle is stationary and then refires it when the brake is released. Regenerative braking creates electricity while slowing down, which helps recharge the batteries. eAssist, which is offered in other GM sedans, gives the Impala a fuel-economy rating of 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.8 on the highway, compared to a 9.9/6.3 estimate for the base 2.5. For maximum potency, a 305-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 (which was the sole engine choice for the previous Impala) is optional. A six-speed automatic transmission connects to all. The base Impala LS includes the air/cruise/tilt basics plus 10 standard airbags, with the mid-grade LT significantly upping content levels. The LTZ will provide a full-on luxury experience with leather seats, power sunroof, navigation and other goodies.

vibration. For 2014, you can order the Crew Cab with a longer 200-centimetre bed (the standard bed is 172 centimetres) and you’ll get a choice of three new all-aluminum engines. The entry point is a 4.3-litre V6 that has the same displacement as the previous V6, but output has significantly increased to 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque from 195/260. Optional is a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet, up from 315/335. Later in the model year they’ll be joined by an available 6.2-litre V8 rated at 420 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, which shares its parts with the new Corvette V8. All three powerplants feature direct fuel injection, which tailors the fuel load for the task at hand. They also have continuously variable valve timing (which allows in more fuel and air depending in the power needs) and cylinder deactivation that cuts off up to half the cylinders in light load and cruise situations. The model range also extends to include a new premium “High Country” model to appeal to wealthy ranchers and city slickers. The best part about this truck is its highly optioned leather interior that places it above the previous top-of-the-line LTZ.
2014 Spark
T
he littlest Chevy’s boxy design helps it deliver an impressive level of usable volume in the least amount of space, which is perfect for city dwellers. The car is nearly 15 centimetres taller than a Mini Cooper, but is slightly shorter overall and offers less distance between the front and rear wheels. With the rear seat in place, you’ll find only minimal stowage in back, but accommodating life’s bulky items is just a split-folding-rearbench away. The rear door handles have been cleverly integrated as part of the window frame, giving the car a two-door appearance. Up-level Sparks come with added visual enhancements, including rocker-panel moldings, roof rails and chrome trim. Inside, the single-pod speedometer, adjacent tachometer/fuel gauge plus a trio of temperature and ventilation control knobs are done up in a contemporary style. An 18-centimetre touch-screen operating the audio, navigation and hands-
free communications systems can also be added. In keeping with the Spark’s modest transportation role, a 1.2-litre four-cylinder generates an equally modest 85 horsepower and 82 poundfeet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, but the old optional four-speed automatic has been replaced by a continually variable transmission, which improves both efficiency and acceleration. In fact, fuel economy figures between the manual and the CVT are essentially identical. The standard feature list includes air conditioning, power windows, ambient interior lighting, front disc brakes and 10 airbags, including knee protection for both front occupants. On the options list are remote keyless entry, leather-like seat covers, heated front seats, alloy wheels and a premium audio package. Other new touches for 2014 include standard automatic headlights, new mirrors with integrated turn signals on top-end Sparks, and a whole gamut of dealer-installed accessories.

assionate about cars and mechanics, automotive mechanics are specialists in the maintenance and repair of all the systems found in today’s vehicles. They are skilled in analyzing
a situation, detecting any problems, and knowing exactly what to do in order to fix them. Car mechanics also do small adjustments and oil changes. They identify breakdowns, remove defective parts, and do any necessary tuning.
Consulting a licensed mechanic is a whole lot more reliable than having your brother-in-law fiddle around under the hood in his spare time. Only automotive mechanics have the skills to make your car run like new. Of course, their service

all require a mechanic’s skills to be upda ted on a regular basis. We have come a long way since the days when mechanics always had greasy hands. With the increasing number of cars on our roads, the know-how of car mechanics is indispensable for getting us home safely. There is usually plenty of work available for those fully trained and licensed in this trade. Clients trust their mechanics’ skills and passion for solving problems — after all they are the maestros under the hood!
The goal of automotive mechanics is to deliver a safe vehicle, in perfect repair, to their clients.

comes at a price, but it is much safer to be on the road after a true professional has serviced your car. You definitely don’t want to break down and be stuck on the side of the road in the middle of rush hour! Above all, good mechanics have a great sense of observation and are meticulous and precise. They must also have the desire to continually update their knowledge, as electronic diagnostic and repair equipment is always evolving. ABS systems, onboard computers, and air conditioning servicing

hanging a bumper and repairing dents are just two of an auto body repairer’s many skills. If your vehicle was in an accident, or if you parked too close to another car in the mall parking lot, these professionals can be entrusted to retouch the paintjob, replace a damaged panel, or repair and restore the bodywork. Their work ranges from repairing superficial scratches to perforated or torn bodywork, although their skills also include replacing windows as well as interior and exterior trims. Auto body repairers know how to install air conditioning systems as well. Restoring bodywork requires flawless technique. As well as knowing how to handle metal, plastic, and aluminum, these tradespeople must also have knowledge in mechanics and electronics — any kind of automobile precision work that requires manual dexterity and meticulousness. Auto body experts must have strength and stamina, but above all they must have an eye for detail. Their trade demands the mastery of various assembling and wel ding procedures, and they must also be committed to updating their knowledge and skills on a continual basis. For example, 20 years ago there were only the wires for the horn behind a dashboard. These days, there are airbags with release mechanisms and, needless to say, a lot more electrical wires than ever before. Expert auto body repairers are masters in the art
of dent removal, levelling, straightening, and restyling, all with the goal of making a damaged vehicle look like new.
Repair or replace? Automotive body repairers will know exactly what to do.

2014 Sierra
F
or 2014, the Sierra and the related Silverado each continue with their own style and attitude, although the “attitude” part is hard to define, exactly. While Chevrolet positions the Silverado as a kind of middle-ground pickup for both work and play, in the Sierra’s case those virtues are distinctly separated. More basic GMC models accentuate the “Professional Grade” tag and the pitch is directed at buyers who rely on their pickups to earn a living. At the opposite end of the scale is the Sierra Denali subbrand that places a much higher value on coddling content. In either case, the Sierra’s primary identification point can be spotted in your rearview mirror. The entire front end, including grille, headlights, bumper and in-your-face GMC logo, are more massive than before and in total make a bolder statement than the Silverado does. Some minor sheetmetal differences exist between the Chevy and the GMC, but that’s about it. Even the interiors of the two pickups share the same basic dash, control panel and available touch-screen communications centre that are a masterstroke of efficient legibility. Of course as you scale the trim-level ladder the appointments become more luxurious and the cabin resembles something approaching a high-end limo, especially in the four-door crew-cab models. Improvements in aerodynamics,
insulation and weather sealing help shut out intrusive noises. Just as a greater use of aluminum in fabricating various body panels and suspension parts has kept the Sierra’s weight in check, the three new engines also benefit. All use aluminum cylinder blocks and incorporate direct injection, whereby fuel is force-fed into the cylinders under high pressure to tailor the fuel load for specific uses. There’s also continuously variable valve timing for improved low- and high-speed performance, while half the cylinders in V8 engines will automatically shut down in steady-state cruise conditions to save fuel. The V6 engine also runs on four cylinders in such situations. The base 4.3-litre V6 might have the same displacement as before, but now makes 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. The old iron 4.3 was good for just 195/260 pound-feet. Mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission, fuel consumption is cut by almost 2.0 l/100 km in the city and 1.5 on the highway (now 11.9/8.4). V8 choices consist of a new 5.3-litre unit with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet, up from 315/335, and a 6.2-litre piece rated at 420/450. That compares to the previous 6.2’s 403/417 rating. It’s standard in the fancier Sierra Denali, not to mention a rather substantial list of content that includes unique 20-inch chrome and wood and leather innards.

Choosing the right winter tire
M
ore and more motorists are catching on that winter tires play an essential role during the cold season, when using the proper winter tire makes all the difference on icy or snowy roads as well as on cold pavement. Which winter tire is the best? It’s not as simple as recommending one specific brand or model. The best advice we can give to motorists who are puzzled by all those tires on the market is to go and see a local tire dealer who advertises many brands. The shop’s technicians will be able to tell you which tire is best suited to your car or truck and to your style of driving. For example, motorists living in very snowy areas will probably need winter tires with a much more aggressive tread design. Even then, the recommendation will depend on whether the car or truck is front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive. People who do a lot of highway driving will be shown specific tires

that might not display large and deep grooves; tires for that kind of driving are more likely to feature an intricate design crated to sip the water from the top layer of the ice on the road so that the
tire can reach the drier part of that ice for the best traction possible. Some motorists might not be aware that their new cars are equipped with performance
wheels and tires. Gone are the days of the good old “snow grips”. Today’s winter tires are so specialized that the best move is to get advice from an experienced tire technician.

Seasons change, and so should your oil
O
il is the lifeblood flowing in the veins of your vehicle’s engine. Without it, your car wouldn’t last very long. Oil allows all the engine parts to function smoothly and properly. In the owner’s manual that came with your car, you will find recommendations for oil change frequency as well as the best kind of oil for your make and model. Even though high-end cars may only need an oil change every 24,000 kilometres, most vehicles require one every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometres. In some cases, that means every few months. There are even some specialists who believe that an oil change every 90 days is the best way to prevent engine problems.
INDUSTRIAL PLAZA REMOTE CAR STARTERS and SECURITY SYSTEMS
Engine oil should be checked regularly. To properly check your engine’s oil levels, run it for a few minutes and then park the car on a level surface. Once the engine has been stopped, wait a few minutes and then check the oil level with the dipstick, which is located in a vertical tube under the hood. It is usually identified by an oilcan symbol on the cap. If you cannot find it, consult your owner’s manual or a mechanic. If the oil on the dipstick is clear and fairly pale looking, it doesn’t need changing. However, it is time to do an oil change if it looks more like molasses and contains solid deposits. By the way, don’t forget to replace the oil filter at the same time, or it will quickly contaminate the new oil.

ou might roll your eyes to read this yet again, but have you checked your tire pressure lately? If you take a look around you the next time you idle at an intersection, chances are you’ll notice more than one slightly deflated tire. Regularly checking the air pressure in your tires, no matter where you live, no matter how cold it is, will keep you safe on the roads and prolong the life of your tires and vehicle. Though safety is the most important issue here, the advice also goes for saving money. Indeed, underinflated tires do cause more fuel consumption, in all weather. And don’t listen to the old wives’ tales that say you’ll have better traction on ice if your tires are slightly underinflated! Tire manufacturers, especially those who deal in specialized in winter tires, spend a lot of time and energy developing tires that grip on the ice at their normal air pressure. If you are not familiar with checking air pressure, simply ask your mechanic to do it for you or show you how to do it. Most likely, he or she won’t charge you for it, and it will definitely help you avoid more expenses down the road, if one of your tires is underinflated. By the way, most new cars and trucks are equipped with tire pressure detectors (TPMS: tire pressure monitoring system), but too many motorists ignore them, thinking that they can do a few more kilometres and check the tires later. That is not a good practice! You never know when you will need the most out of your tires and their capabilities, and they will only work properly if they are inflated to the recommended pressure.

2014 Rondo
T
here aren’t many compact wagons that can get away with packaging three rows of seats that real people can actually sit in. The only other example that springs to mind is the Mazda5. The original Rondo was a decent competitor, but the new version is better looking, more functional and does more with a litre of gasoline. Fortunately it’s no longer the anonymously styled bubble of a wagon, but a smart-looking squared-off multipurpose rig that makes an ideal grocery getter and kid pickerupper. Called the Carens elsewhere in Kia’s vast distribution universe, the Rondo is exclusive to the Canadian market in
that it remains out of reach for U.S. residents. It’s hard to fathom why not since it has a lot to offer, starting with a wellplanned interior, that, when not transporting people around can be converted to a workhorse of cargo carrier. The second row is a tri-folding unit, while the optional third row is a 50:50 bench. Both rows fold as flat as a bowling lane and offer an impressive variety of people and cargo permutations. However there’s only one choice when it comes to powerplants: a 164-horsepower four-cylinder that can be had with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic with steering-wheel paddle shifters. The base Rondo
LX arrives well turned-out with about as much equipment as most Canadians would ever want or need. The rest can move up to the EX that adds push-button start (spares you from the effort of turning a key), backup camera, rain-sensing windshield wipers, portable cargo flashlight and a power extendable driver’s seat leg cushion. Along with the third-row seat, the top-end EX Luxury includes an electronic parking brake, 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard), leather seat covers that are heated and ventilated in front. A voice-activated navigation system and a premium audio package head the list of extra-cost add-ons.
2014 Sorento
2014 Sportage
K
I
ia’s current design renaissance encompasses the Soul wagon, Optima sedan and smaller Forte and Rio models. You can also place the current-generation Sorento on that list. For 2014, the Sorento tall wagon receives a minor nosejob, including the ubiquitous mesh-style grille, updated headlights and optional fog lights, plus new taillight lenses. As well, Kia has mounted the Sorento on a platform that’s 18 per cent stiffer than that of the 2013 version. There’s also a stouter subframe that holds the powertrain more firmly in place as well as a new independent front suspension. In back, a more compact rear suspension adds interior space and reduces cabin noise and vibration. Inside there’s a new instrument panel and center control stack with easier-to-find buttons and knobs. Under the hood, a 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder powerplant that was standard for 2013 is replaced by the previously optional 191-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder with direct injection, whereby fuel is sprayed under very high pressure directly into the combustion
chamber instead of via the intake manifold. This means more complete combustion for added power and fuel economy. Optional is a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6. With either engine a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls is the sole shifter. The available all-wheel-drive hardware is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in highspeed turning situations for added control (known as torque vectoring). Along with the existing LX, and EX trims, Kia has added an SX model that includes a woodtrimmed interior with ventilated soft leather-covered seats on the inside, and self-leveling headlights and exclusive 19inch wheels (17- and 18-inch rims adorn lesser Sorentos). The options list contains a power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, advanced voice-activated communications, infotainment and navigation controls (incorporating an eight-inch touch-screen) and a blind-spot monitoring system that constantly tracks vehicles in the immediate vicinity and issues an audible and visual alert should any get too close.
f you admire the Kia Soul, but would prefer that your daily driver include all-wheel-drive, then the Sportage might do the trick. Under design director Peter Schreyer’s watchful eye, the Sportage’s modest styling revamp gives the Sportage a slightly bolder appearance. Kia has also added more noise-silencing material in and around the passenger compartment while also retuning the suspension for a smoother ride. For drivers there’s a selector that varies the stiffness and “feel” of the steering depending on the level of feedback desired. The base powerplant is a revised 2.4-litre four-cylinder base engine that for 2014 receives a directinjection upgrade (the fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber under very high pressure instead of through the intake manifold under low pressure). The result is a bit more performance: 182 horsepower versus 176 for the 2013 version. Optional is a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that
uses a six-speed automatic only. The non-turbo four-cylinder connects to a six-speed manual transmission (available only in base front-wheel-drive models), but the six-speed automatic is optional and returns slightly better fuel economy. The Sportage is a front-driver by nature, while the optional all-wheel-drive system, which is available for both engines, directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels until tire slip is detected. At that point, the required power is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Mode” allows for a fixed 50:50 torque split at speeds up to 40 km-h for those times when sustained maximum traction is required. Of the four trim levels, the top-line SX features unique body pieces and wheels and more supportive seats. An upgraded Infinity-brand audio system, panorama roof and push-button start are all optional, as are heated and cooled front seats (offered when the leather seatcover option is specified).

2014 Fusion
T
alk about contrasts. The previous Fusion was a smart choice, but the current version adds a certain star power to draw in a much broader range of buyers. The posture of the overly upright-and-blunt nose takes some getting used to, but the overall shape with the sloped roofline is simply gorgeous. During the redesign, the Fusion abandoned its V6 options, but now there are no fewer than six distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, topping out with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder “EcoBoost” engine with 237 horsepower. The latter is optional but a requirement for all-wheel-drive Fusions. In between is a 1.6-litre EcoBoost that carries over for 2014, but joining the lineup is an all-new 1.5-litre EcoBoost. Both produce an identical 179 horsepower, but the older 1.6 beats the newcomer in torque by a slight margin. The big difference is that the 1.6 will now only be offered with a six-speed manual transmission while the 1.5 picks
D
2014 Escape
espite Ford doing very little to the previous Escape over the years, the compact tall wagon kept selling like hotcakes. The sleeker second-generation’s radically different sheetmetal is just one reason why the Escape is more popular than ever. Its slightly larger dimensions mean greater rear-seat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over that of earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup) is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A hybrid version won’t be available this time around since Ford’s C-Max hybrid wagon uses that drive system. Sadly for a few “Escapees”, the sixspeed manual gearbox has shifted away from the Escape lineup, leaving only a sixspeed automatic (with a detent for manual gear selection) as the sole transmission. A new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy considering the Escape’s four distinct trims. But the most unique option is the power lifgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/or groceries). For 2014 it can be ordered with an integrated trailer hitch.
AUTO PREVIEW 2014 Friday, October 25, 2013 Penticton Western News
up the slack with a six-speed automatic. The 1.5 is billed as the thriftiest of the three EcoBoost options thanks to auto start-stop technology, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. Both employ a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. The Hybrid’s system allows for maximum electric-only velocity of 100 km-h, and has raised the fuel-economy bar to 4.0 l/100 km in the city and 4.1 on the highway. The Fusion Energi plug ‘n’ play model uses the same basic tech as the Hybrid, but gets a 1.9 l/100 km equivalency rating; an all-electric range of 30 kilometres and a total estimated range of more than 1,000 kilometres. Available communications and safety content includes keep-you-in-line lane-monitoring system, keep-your-distance adaptive cruise control, confidence-boosting parking-spot assist and shoulder-check-augmenting blind spot and cross-traffic alerts, while inflatable belts in the rear seats are optional for 2014.
2014 F150
T
rying to keep buyers happy while an all-new F-150 is in the works can’t be an easy thing. So, Ford is doing its best with 2014 models by rolling out a few small changes to its bestselling pickup. The segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights that debuted on the Limited model for 2013 are now standard on every trim level, except the base models, while power-telescoping/folding towing mirrors inspired by the Super Duty are available too. All models get their own trimspecific grilles, bumpers and wheel designs; other changes for 2014 include a new grille for the FX package and chrome wheels for XLT and STX. Those wishing for a return of the SVT Lightning sport truck can now have the next best thing: the 2014 Tremor. It’s regular-cab short-box sport-truck powered by the 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged V6. It uses flat-black accents outside, 20-inch wheels with low-profile tires and a steep rear-end gear for the best possible acceleration. At the other end of the spectrum, the Limited is available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by an interior with heated and cooled redand-black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. The Limited is exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 with 365 horsepower. Those wanting traditional V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. The sheer number of F-150 combinations is mind-boggling. Not including paint colours and interior trims, there are four box lengths and three cab sizes (regular, extended SuperCab and four-door SuperCrew), not to mention both rear- and four-wheel-drive availability. A 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 is standard in the F-150 SVT Raptor 4x4, which is inspired by Ford’s participation in off-road desert racing. Standard gear includes special shock absorbers that stiffen as they compress to keep the truck from bottoming out or becoming too tippy while cornering. That’s a good idea, since there’s more than 28 centimetres of suspension travel in front and about 35 in back. The giant 35-inch-tall all-terrain rubber has been mounted to 17-inch wheels that are positioned farther outboard from the fenders to a point where the Raptor’s width has been increased by more than 18 centimetres compared to a standard F-150.

2014 RAM HD
A
fter the Ram 2500 and 3500 series pickups upped the stakes with their optional Cummins turbo-diesel available in evil, eviler and eviler-est grades in 2013, that left a rather big step down to the base 5.7-litre V8. What to do? Well, add the 6.4-litre SRT V8 to the lineup, of course. But back to the Cummins. The tamest of the 6.7-litre inline six-cylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 poundfeet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers to 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse unit lays down 850 pound-feet. The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a six-speed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow up to 7,730 kilogram of trailer weight and up to 820 kilograms of tongue weight using a conventional Class V hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. That means shorter stops and less brake wear. Another Cummins bonus is that the interval between oil changes
is 24,000 kilometres. Still available is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 with a seemingly light 400 pound-feet of torque. Now back to the 6.4. Previously an SRT exclusive in the car line, it’s optional in both the 2500 and 3500. The 6.4 delivers 410 horses and 429 pound-feet of torque. For maximum towing, a coil-sprung rear suspension with air bladders is available on 2500 models, while 3500 use optional air springs integrated into the existing leaf-sprung suspension. Tow ratings of just under 8,180 kilograms and 13,600 kilograms, respectively, are simply ridiculous. Of course four-wheeldrive is available, but in the HD it has a disconnect feature that disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when not needed, thus cutting fuel consumption. Inside, owner/operators will also appreciate the cab design, with a dashboard with available touch-screen controls (with redundant switches) for the communications and climate control systems. The center console features two-tier storage space. Regular, Crew and Mega cab models return, with a variety of box sizes and equipment levels that would make your head spin.
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
A
lthough now well into its fourth generation, the rugged five-passenger Grand Cherokee remains one of the most popular vehicles in its class. To keep it there, Jeep has come up with more than a few mid-life upgrades, both above and below the surface. While GC’s on-and off-road agility is largely attributable to the various suspension components it shares with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class tall wagon (Chrysler was once part of the German automaker), the Jeep is tuned very differently. Under the hood, Jeep uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 while the 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is optional. However, Jeep is finally reintroducing a turbo-diesel engine in the GC for 2014. Although it’s similar in displacement and output to the last diesel, the 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” (240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque) is sourced from Italian firm VM Motori rather than Mercedes-Benz. The EcoDiesel can deliver 9.8 l/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the highway, versus 12.4 and 8.3 for the V6. Part of those savings are attributable to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, even in the high-powered SRT8. With a 470-horsepower 6.4-litre “Hemi”, 20-inch wheels with stickier road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials that are now re-tuned to send more power to the rear in enthusiastic driving, this is one Jeep that’s as much fun through corners as it is from a standing start. Jeep states this speed brat will reach 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than five seconds, which is made even easier in 2014 thanks to standard launch control. Other more “normal” GC models -- Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit, which is new for 2014 - come in standard four-wheeldrive. The Summit is a full-on luxury model that eclipses even the already
spangly Overland and includes adaptive HID headlights and dual exhaust tips, while inside everything is slathered in “Natura Plus” leather, open-pore wood trim, a faux-suede headliner and dual-pane moonroof. Finally, Summit features an 825-watt 19-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system that’ll replicate any music perfectly. The best 4x4 system is Quadra Drive II that includes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain control with settings for Sand/Mud; Snow; and Rock for off-road terrain plus a Sport setting for dry pavement.

DODGE
2014 Dart
W
ith Chrysler now being a fully entrenched member of the Fiat group, it gives the North American brand access to world-class technology and small-car platforms. Although the Dart and Alfa’s Giulietta (Alfa Romeo also belongs to Fiat) share the same basic underpinnings, the Dart has its own distinctive sheet metal, interior and powerplant selection. It’s also built at a Chrysler assembly plant in Illinois. The Dart’s importance can’t be overstated enough, since Chrysler hadn’t had a compact sedan in play since the 2005-model-year Neon. The Dart name resonates more with older customers, with many younger car buyers likely missing the connection completely. Turning a Giulietta into a Dart involved increasing the platform length by 30 centimetres inches and the width by five centimetres. The result, claims Dodge, is a car with segment-leading scale, beating such small-car luminaries as the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Chevrolet Cruze. The cabin design is a standout, with futuristic-looking gauges, non-traditional control-panel displays and a unique storage area beneath the front passenger seat-cushion. For 2014, Dodge is reacting to customer and market feedback and has shuffled the Dart’s trim lev-
els and powertrains a little. The base engine is a 160-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s standard with SE. The SXT, GT (which replaces the R/T) and Limited come with the 184-horsepower 2.4-litre. The 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder used to be the optional higher-power selection for most trims, but is now exclusively found in the fuel-saving Aero. The turbo-four is rated at the same 160 horses as the base engine, but leads in the torque department with 184 pound-feet to 145. All three choices represent pretty powerful stuff for this class, which is important as even the lightest Dart out-hefts most of its peers by a good 150 kilograms. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard with all engines, while a six-speed automatic is optional with all but the Aero’s 1.4 Turbo. That engine can be had with an available six-speed automated manual gearbox. Base Darts are pretty basic, but on par with others in the category. The go-to model to get air conditioning, split-folding rear bench seat, upgraded interior and a better engine is the SXT for about $3,000 more. After this, the major difference between the Limited and the GT is that the Limited comes with an automatic transmission instead of a six-speed manual. Otherwise, both have leather seating, keyless start and a backup camera.
2014 Grand Caravan
A
lthough the category’s appeal has faded in the last decade or so, the minivan segment was sparked 30 years ago with the Chrysler “Magic Wagons” and that’s a good excuse for a birthday party. The Grand Caravan combines a great starting price with plenty of space and decent performance. Since its 2011-model-year updating, the GC drives more securely and frugally with a revised suspension topped with low-rolling-resistance tires to help prop up fuel economy. At the same time, the interior was upgraded with new gauges and soft-touch dashboard and door-panel surfaces replacing hard plastic. The 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V6 that was introduced at the same time produces 283 horsepower and, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, easily runs with the minivan herd for fuel consumption. Inside, you’ll find the usual dozen or so cupholders plus a variety of small-item bins and pockets (including dual glove boxes) that showcase the vehicle’s utility. The standard third-row split-folding bench seat can be power folded (as an option) to create a flat load floor. The Stow ‘n’ Go feature comes with a one-touch-down feature and provides out-of-sight storage bins when the second-row seats are left in their upright positions. The price-leading Canada Value Package, heads the list of trim levels that also includes SXT, Crew, Crew Plus and the sporty R/T. The Canadian Value Package rings in at $29,700, but usually sells for less than $22K -- one of the best deals in the land -- and includes most of the basic features and safety systems you would
expect. At the top end, the $42,600 R/T comes with a tighter suspension. The 2014 30th Anniversary Edition builds on the mid-level SXT and adds 17-inch wheels and chrome trim outside, along with badging, black leather-and-suede seats, piano-black accents and more. There’s also a Blacktop package that includes polished wheels and blacked-out trim.

2014 Buick Verano
I
n only three years, the Verano has become a serious option for entry-level luxury buyers. When introduced for 2013, the Turbo model started nipping at the larger Regal GS’s heels thanks to a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 horsepower. However, the Regal surely clawed back some of the gap thanks its new AWD system, which you can’t get in any Verano. The Turbo comes with all the toys that are optional on lesser models, including heated leather seats and steering wheel and a nine-speaker Bose-brand audio system. And it costs $33,000 compared with the larger Regal GS at over $38,000. Quite the bargain. Regular Verano models start at a much lower $24,000 and although base models come with leatherette (vinyl) and cloth seats, premium versions feature plenty of wood trim and overstuffed leather-covered seat cushions. For any compact car, this is ground-breaking. The Verano’s designers say they’ve gone out of their way to make the cabin a place of exemplary peace and quiet. They’ve added five layers of acoustic material within the headliner,
sound-absorbing foam and other insulating materials stuffed into every possible nook and cranny, all door openings triple sealed and the use of thicker windshield and side glass for additional noise reduction. Other sound-defeating measures include specially designed tires and alloy wheels plus “quiettuned” intake and exhaust systems for the standard 180-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder engine that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission (there’s an optional six-speed manual for the Turbo). Other standard gear includes dual-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, 10 standard airbags and GM’s OnStar concierge/help line that can also activate various functions (open doors, check fuel level, etc.) from your smart phone. Also optional is a heated steering wheel, push-button start, electronic parking brake, premium Bose audio package and 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inchers are standard). New safety gear for 2014 includes optional forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning, which joins crosstraffic alert and side blind-spot warning systems in most packages.

2014 Buick Encore
H
ow did Buick proclaim that its previous focus on size-sizesize was long-gone? By introducing the smaller Encore. Just don’t let its small dimensions fool you: it is a uniquely practical tall wagon that can hold lots of gear and can hold its own in the horsepower and fuel-consumption departments. Also adding to its versatility is available all-wheel-drive. From its oval-shaped “waterfall” grille to the tip of its two-tone bumper, the Encore features a neat blend of stylish design cues with just a hint of ruggedness. The Encore uses the same platform as Chevrolet’s Trax cute-ute and Sonic small car, however it’s about 18 centimetres longer and 13 centimetres taller than the Sonic hatchback, which gives it far more cargo room with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The front passenger seat folds flat so that ladders and building materials can be
more easily accommodated. The cabin is also on the receiving end of one of Buick’s more fashionable interiors. It has active noise cancellation that uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds, then a special computer dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. It’s pleasantly surprising that Buick would select the Encore as its initial recipient of this tech. Standard is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Base cars arrive with the usual air/cruise/tilt/power accessories plus 10 airbags and standard 18-inch wheels. From that point, depending on the designation, you select dualzone climate control, power sunroof, navigation system, leather-trimmed interior, power-adjustable driver’s chair, heated steering wheel, premium Bose sound system, to name just a few.

F
ew people are left without a distinct facial expression after viewing the GMC Terrain’s styling for the first time; it’s generally either a big grin or a blank stare . . . and nothing in between. If you’re one of the former and still don’t find the regular Terrain flashy enough, GMC has the ticket for you. The ultra-luxurious Denali sub-brand is available on this, its smallest vehicle. More chrome on the broad grille and exhaust pipes, satin touches, unique lights, and body-colored fascias and rocker moldings highlight the exterior, while softer leather on the seats, doors and steering wheel, along with “smoked” mahogany inserts differentiate the cabin from lesser trims. Unusual for a Denali, however, the Terrain version can be had with either the base 182-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder or the 301-horsepower 3.6-litre V6.
(You’re not forced to get to the V6). All Terrains get six-speed automatic transmissions and both engines can be had with front- or optional all-wheel-drive. Towing capacity for the four-cylinder is 680 kilograms, while the V6 is rated for 1,600. Base SLE models feature the usual air/tilt/power accessories along with a few unusual standard features such as a rear-vision camera and 12 months of OnStar, GM’s remote help and courtesy concierge service. Every Terrain model gets a new audio system that uses a seven-inch touch screen that also incorporates the screen for the back-up camera. There’s an available safety package with forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning and rear-parking assist. The only thing to distinguish the 2014 model from its predecessor? 2014 MAZDA3
M
azda’s redesigned sedan and hatchback models now emulate the mid-size Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon, which means they no longer wear Cheshire-cat grins affixed to their snouts. Instead, both have adopted Mazda’s latest Kodo (Japanese for “Soul of Motion”) design approach that includes an attractive, but less gimmicky grille. The rest of the sedan and hatchback’s bodywork is equally tasty from any vantage point. Like its Mazda6 and CX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3 benefits greatly from the SkyActiv suite of structural and powertrain enhancements. The former includes a stiffer platform and finely tuned suspension and steering components geared sports-car-like precision. But the real show stoppers are the powerplants. The base engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Optional is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both are available with six-speed manual transmissions, while six-speed automatics are optional. Interestingly, both engines are closely matched in
fuel consumption, with the nod going to the 2.0’s official rating, with the automatic transmission, of 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.7 on the highway. The 2.5 rings up 7.5/5.4, but both numbers improve to 7.1/5.0 with the optional “i-ELOOP” capacitor that stores electricity generated under braking. The system provides power for the 3’s various electrical components for extended periods while disengaging the alternator, which reduces drag on the engine. The driver is unaware that i-Eloop is operating. Mazda3 prices start at $17,700 (including destination charges) for the base GX sedan that includes the usual power-operated accessories plus push-button start. The base GX Sport hatchback starts at $18,700. Both body styles are also available in GS and GT trim, the latter fitted with enough standard and available comfort and safety content to rival many so-called luxury vehicles. Regardless of your choice, the new Mazda3 is an impressive piece of work that will be appreciated by those who really enjoy driving something sporty, but without the space limitations that traditional sports cars impose.
Did You Have A Look At Your Tires Before The Cold Season?
S
o, you have decided to mount your old winter tires for another cold season. If those tires have not covered a lot of road and still seem to be in pretty good shape, it could very well be a wise decision, budget wise. Yet, there are still some precautions to be taken before doing so. First of all, have your tires inspected before mounting them. A lot of motorists prefer to keep their winter tires mounted on spare rims so they don’t have to take them off and put them back on too often. Doing this saves tires from stretching and mounting damage. Spare rims might seem like an extra expense, but they help save on mounting, dismounting and balan-
cing costs. Still, the tires have to be inspected for any damage (chips, cuts, broken belts) and wear. A tire might look like it still has quite a lot of tread, but the grooves might not be deep enough to be very efficient in the snow. Your mechanic or any tire expert will have the exact tool that will allow him or her to measure tread depth and verify if the tire is still good for winter. Obviously, the air pressure will be set to the right number, but it will be up to you to make sure that pressure is respected all winter long. At the same time, have your expert look at your spare tire (unless you really know how to do it.) It, too, should be at the recommended pressure. You will find that number either on the wheel itself or in the owner’s manual.
Tires: Inspect those winter tires before getting them mounted.

Check that battery before the cold arrives
I
f there is one component of your car that you don’t want to have fail in winter, it has to be the battery. Ironically, the battery is also one of the most neglected car parts. Why is that? Because most motorists see it as a sealed unit that requires no maintenance. In most cases, this is true. However, time is a factor that can wear out any car part in unpredictable ways. Consider, for instance, the battery. In some cars, it will last up to ten years or more. Yet, after four or five years, it would be highly advisable to have it inspected by an expert, such as your local mechanic who has all the necessary tools to verify the condition your battery is in. If your mechanic advises you to change the
21
battery before winter, don’t think that they’re just trying to make money. A brand new battery will help your car to start much easier in the winter. Your older battery might look good, especially in summer, but when the temperature falls well below freezing, it might very well betray you. Also, as your mechanic checks your battery, he or she will have a good look at the battery terminals or posts and all the wiring and electrical cables and will clean what needs to be cleaned and replace what appears to be worn out or damaged. Unless you are willing to take the chance of becoming stranded this winter, you should have your battery checked way before the cold weather hits.

inter is a tough season for just about any vehicle. It’s even tougher for older cars and trucks that need more maintenance. Consequently, these vehicles require more special attention before the cold season and on many levels. One of them is not only engine coolant levels but also its efficiency at protecting the engine when the mercury drops well below freezing. As is the case for so many liquids and car components, today’s coolants are much better than they used to be. However, they still need to be checked at least once a year by a specialist (who will also take a look at the whole
cooling system including hoses and fittings.) Most antifreeze manufacturers recommend a mixture of 50% water and 50% antifreeze in the radiator. Although it might not be that easy to measure each one exactly, it’s better to have the liquid analyzed by your mechanic after a few years. Adding water once in a while to the radiator can dilute the antifreeze to a point where it is not as efficient as expected in intense cold. On the other hand, if you’ve had to add a lot of water to your coolant system, there might be a leak somewhere. Have your mech anic check your engine and its cooling system before adding more liquid. It could only require some mi nor repairs.
Regular car maintenance is like money in your pocket
R
egular car maintenance done on a systematic basis will prolong the life of your car. It is a proven fact. Even better, it represents dollars when the time comes to resell your vehicle. A well-maintained vehicle is unquestionably more valuable, however if you don’t keep track of regular maintenance, you’ll find it difficult to capitalize on your car’s good state of repair. That is why it is so important to record all the work carried out on your vehicle. When purchasing a second hand car, people look for a reliable product that will last long enough for them to have a return on their investment. If you don’t have a maintenance notebook for the vehicle you wish to sell, you’ll find it difficult to ask for more than its market value. Conversely, with supporting evidence the buyer will be ready to spend a bit more, knowing that the vehicle has been properly cared for. A maintenance notebook will help you remember some elements that may otherwise slip your mind during routine maintenance checks. By meticulously filling
in the notebook, you’ll be sure that everything is done that needs to be done. Your notes should include the odometer reading at the time of each routine checkup or major repair job. Also, it would be to your advantage to include a short description of the work done. This will facilitate finding and solving any future problems that may arise. For example, if the engine isn’t turning over properly and your notebook indicates that the spark plugs haven’t been changed yet, you or your mechanic will know where to look first for the cause.

2014 XV Crosstrek
A
lthough it shares its raised ride height and a substantial ground clearance, the XV Crosstrek leaves the serious business of off-roading to its larger Forester cousin. Heavily based on the Impreza hatchback, Subaru has provided the XV Crosstrek with its own distinctive nosepiece, bumpers, roof rails, side cladding and rear spoiler. The meaner macho look is completed with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch all-season tires mounted to custom-look wheels. The XV Crosstrek is fired up with a 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that comes straight out of the Impreza. The five-speed manual transmission has Incline Start Assist to prevent rolling backward when moving your right foot from the brake to the gas pedal while stopped on a hill. Optional is a continuously variable unit with paddle shifters that operate six preset ratios. The new-for-2014 Hybrid uses the same CVT only with an electric motor included that’s worth 13.4 horsepower and 48 poundfeet of torque. This is very much a “mild” hybrid system as the electric motor is used only when accelerating from rest, and it can be called upon to assist the 2.0-litre engine if needed. Subaru
says it will also function in electric-only mode in some specific stop-and-go situations. Hybrid fuel consumption is rated at 6.9 l/100 km in the city, compared with 8.2 for the gas-only model with the CVT. As of this writing, Subaru is not reporting highway fuel consumption. Both nonhybrid and hybrid models with CVTs share all-wheel-drive systems: the Active Torque Split setup maintains a 60:40 division, front to rear, but automatically directs up to 100 per cent of the torque to either set of wheels when necessary. Manual-gearbox models split the torque 50:50 in normal driving situations, but will apportion up to 80 per cent to either front or rear wheels when slippage is detected. It’s by no means a Jeep- or Land Rover-style rock-crawler, but for more typical outdoor activities, the XV Crosstrek is about all the average person will ever need. Other Hybrid additions include active grille shutters to keep the air out at highway speeds (to reduce the parachute effect), lightweight 17-inch wheels to save fuel, along with more standard equipment such as a rear-view camera, heated seats and exterior mirrors and a display that shows exactly how the hybrid system is working.
THE CAR YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE MAY END UP SAVING YOUR LIFE. The 2014 Subaru Forester is the only small SUV to receive the top rating (“G/Good”) in every safety test issued by the IIHS.

AUTO PREVIEW 2014 Friday, October 25, 2013 Penticton Western News
hen Ed Turner purchased Mervyn Motors Volkswagen Audi in 2002, Audi had 20 models. By 2010, that number had grown to 42 and by 2015 Audi will have 60 unique models in production.
That kind of growth meant Audi required their own space, so Ed and his team at Turner Volkswagen Audi began the search. In September 2012, Ed purchased the Winn Automotive facility on Enterprise Way and began renovating. The front of the building was removed to make way for an 8 car showroom. A state of the art delivery bay was also built so Audi owners can take delivery of their new car indoors. The advanced service area includes a drive in service reception. Overall the size of the building
increased from 12,000 to 16,000 square feet. Audi’s brand pillars are ‘sporty, sophisticated and progressive’. The Audi R8 is a perfect example of this philosophy and Turner Audi is proud to be an R8 dealer. With Audi’s exciting line-up of vehicles and the fresh ideas from Turner Audi’s management and staff, the future is bright! Turner Audi opens in their brand new location on Enterprise Way mid November, and they are planning a grand opening for April 2014.
2014 R8 Coupe
A
lthough Audi began showing pictures of revised R8 some time ago, it’s only recently that the whole picture is becoming clearer. And it really is just about perfect. The LED lightpipes (around the headlights) are more angular now, and the grille is just different enough to be fresh. The proportions are the same and with the soft-top Spyder, The R8 gets the nod as the Ultimate Tanning Machine. The roof stows in just 19 seconds, letting in all that glorious engine noise. Aside from the obvious, the Spyder also loses the coupe’s “side blades” that direct air into the mid-mounted powerplant. And instead of a back window that displays the engine, the Spyder has a body-colored cover with pods that flow nicely into the seatbacks. Otherwise, the Spyder is mechanically identical to the coupe, which gets a 430-horsepower 4.2-litre V8 as the base engine, with the high-revving 525-horsepower Lamborghini 5.2-litre V10 available as an option. For 2014, Audi reveals its excellent coupe-only V10 Plus model, which gets an extra 25 horsepower and a little more torque, along with dropping about 60 kilograms in the
process. It’s the most track-focused R8 of the bunch, thanks to plenty of carbon-fibre bits, including the side blades, front splitter, rear spoiler and diffuser. There’s also a smaller fuel tank, lighter manual seats and -- most importantly -- carbon-ceramic brake discs that not only resist fade spectacularly, but are nearly as light as a feather. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but the six-speed electronically operated sequential has been replaced by a smoother seven-speed unit. Power still routes to Audi’s rear-biased Quattro all-wheel-drive system. From the optional -- we would say necessary -- 465-watt 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen audio system to the LED headlights with their clear-glass covers, the R8 is a near perfect blend of form, function, luxury and, of course, performance. Zero-to-60 mph (96 km-h) is in the 4.5-second range for the V8, while Audi claims the V10 can reach that velocity in less than 3.9 seconds (or four seconds flat in the slightly heavier Spyder). The Plus lops another couple tenths off the regular V10’s time, as does ordering the sevenspeed gearbox.

2014 Tundra
A
lthough Toyota hasn’t sold as many of its full-size Tundras as it might have expected, that doesn’t mean it has given up. In fact, the Tundra has been given a mid-cycle facelift that incorporates a new hood and reprofiled grille, along with a three-piece lower bumper and squaredoff fenders and wheel wells. The bed sides and the cargo area itself are new as is the tailgate. However, the overall profile hasn’t changed: Tundras continue to be available in your choice of Regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and fourdoor CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. The 310-horsepower 4.6-litre V8 and top-tuned 381-horsepower 5.7 V8 are basically untouched and both use six-speed automatic transmissions. Four-wheel-drive is optional, of course. Inside, the roomy cabin features several improvements to make life easier for the driver, including moving the HVAC and audio controls six centimetres closer. New seats feature better ventilation and can also travel more. Base regular-cab models actually come fairly well equipped with air conditioning
E
2014 4Runner LTD
ven though nearly every other competitor has “gone soft”, the 4Runner continues to use a separate chassis underneath its bolt-on body. That’s because Toyota’s hard-working truck stubbornly refuses to become a jacked-up car. To make the 2014 model a little easier to spot, it features a slightly redesigned snout with more angular projector beam headlights with smoked lenses, and a huge lower grille and bumper. The 270-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 that as Goldilocks once famously declared “is just right” and it also earns a respectable 12.6 l/100 km in the city and 9.2 on the highway. Also standard equipment is a five-speed-automatic transmission. You get to choose between a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case, or upgrade at extra cost to a fulltime unit with a locking centre differential controlled by a console switch. Dashboards and other interior bits are similarly refreshed, with softer materials and leather-wrapped steering wheel and a new audio system. Base SR5 4Runners feature climate control, multi-adjustable power driver’s seat, eight airbags (including two front-knee inflatables) and chrome roof rails, Hill Start Assist that keeps the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on an incline and Hill Descent Control to prevent unintended acceleration on a downward slope. The Trail Edition lives up to its name by including a system that sets the vehicle at a specific speed while operating in low range over extremely rough ground. Instead of bouncing your foot back and forth between the brake and throttle, you just have to work the brake. As well, the Multi-terrain Select allows the driver to add or reduce the amount of wheel slip, depending on surface conditions such as loose sand or solid rock. The Trail can also disconnect the stabilizer bars for added suspension travel. The package includes a sliding rear cargo deck that can support up to 200 kilograms. Limited package content includes a touch-screen and on-screen apps (optional in lower trims), leather interior, 15-speaker audio system and a backup camera. As was previously the case, a third-row seat can be added to all 4Runner models.

and a 6.1-inch (15.5-centimetre) touchscreen display with Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and a backup camera. Adding more doors to the cab automatically gets you more, although many of those standard features can be added to regular-cab models by choosing the SR5 Package and the SR5 Plus Package. There’s not enough room here to discuss the 10 models and 30 available configurations, but noteworthy is the Platinum that includes perforated diamond-pleated leather seats and instrument panel, along with plenty of chrome touches, a 12-speaker JBL-brand touch-screen audio system, navigation and heated and cooled seats. The new Platinum 1794 Edition is Toyota’s take on Ford’s King Ranch or Ram’s Laramie Longhorn. It’s billed as a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, where the Tundra plant is located in Texas. You get a saddle-brown leather touches with suede inserts, and similar luxury equipment to the Platinum. Both the Platinum and Platinum 1794 are 4x4 machines available only in the four-door CrewMax cab configuration.
2014 Corolla
F
or a small car, the Corolla has some big numbers to brag about. Like the fact that in 47 years Toyota has sold more than 40 million of them and currently operates 16 factories worldwide that ship Corollas to 154 countries. The all-new 11th-generation North American version comes on strong with a bit more style -- especially from the windshield forward -- than its broad base of customers are used to seeing. Nothing too radical, mind you, but just enough design drama to create some politely muffled ooh’s and ah’s. Where the new Corolla shines, however, is in passenger accommodations and comfort. The car has grown about four inches in overall length and in distance between the front and rear wheels. In addition a slightly wider cabin also contributes to more passenger space. Interior styling has also improved, but in a conservative way that differs from more daring competitors. Likewise, engine choices eschew anything performance-related. A 132-horsepower four-cylinder carries over from the previous generation and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission for the base CE and the S. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the CE, while a new continuously variable unit (CVT) is optional for S and standard for LE and LE ECO. To re-
duce that “rubber-band” sensation of varying engine speed that’s prevalent with many CVT applications, Toyota’s engineers added seven artificial shift points that function automatically (or can be controlled through available steering-column-mounted paddle shifters) to simulate the action of a regular automatic transmission. The LE ECO is also equipped with a 140-horsepower version of the 1.8 that’s rated at 6.5 l/100 km on the highway and 4.6 in the city, compared to the base model’s 6.9/5.2 rating with the CVT. Aside from a more efficient engine with special variable valve timing, those figures are achieved with the help of underbody panels that improve the car’s aerodynamics (and reduce highway-speed fuel consumption). As before, entry-level Corollas don’t come with air conditioning ; that’s saved for the LE and the S. The LE ECO gets climate control. All models comes with steel wheels as standard, with aluminum wheels available only as an option.
