About 100 residents from both sides of the Tsawwassen border turned out Wednesday evening at South Delta Secondary for a public meeting about an application to install 45-metre radio towers on the American side.

At issue is a proposal by KRPI radio in Ferndale, Wash., to install a five-tower, 50 kilowatt array at McKenzie Way and Tyee Drive in Point Roberts.

Concerned residents argue that such a strong signal will cause “blanketing interference” in electronic equipment, particularly in Tsawwassen. Computer speakers, cordless phones, and other electronic devices may pick up the radio signal from the towers, especially those residents living in southern Tsawwassen where the signal is strongest, according to organizers of the meeting.

Arthur Reber, who is a member of the Point Roberts Taxpayers Federation, said the KRPI application that was approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) did not show Tsawwassen on their map, and the closest urban cen-

Although Canadians don’t have any control over the FCC, Reber urged people to write letters to Industry Canada and lobby their member of parliament, Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

Whatcom County, which is currently considering the application, has received a flood of letters and complaints since the news in August, but Reber said people don’t need to send any more.

A recommendation will come from

the county in two or three months, and in either case it will go before a hearing examiner – a Bellingham court judge – which both Canadians and Americans are allowed to attend.

Many attendees were allowed to speak from the audience, and most expressed health concerns about electromagnetic waves (EMF) emanating from the towers, concerns that are similar to the ones circulating around BC Hydro’s installation of smart meters.

One speaker indicated EMFs are linked

to cancer and other health problems, however most professional health organizations are skeptical of linking radio waves with adverse health effects.

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer published a review of EMFs in 2011, concluding there was inadequate evidence evidence to the claims made by those with “EMF sensitivity.” Further, Health Canada has stated, “There is no conclusive evidence of any harm caused by exposures [to electric and magnetic fields] at levels found in Canadian homes and schools, including those located just outside the boundaries of power line corridors.”

Several local politicians attended the meeting, including Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, and Couns. Ian Paton and Bruce McDonald.

Huntington said she met with the owners of KRPI radio on Wednesday, who were invited to the meeting but did not attend.

She said the radio station is moving north because of blanketing interference complaints in Ferndale while the owners claim it’s to better serve their existing listener base in Washington and increase their range to Canadian listeners.

KRPI has stated it will have an engineer respond to each individual complaint and deal with the problem accordingly.

News that the George Massey Tunnel is set to be replaced by a new bridge crossing from Deas Island has some residents in nearby Marina Garden Estates concerned.

The recently approved final phase of Marina Gardens will be built over a 10 year period, but the first phase will see construction on the eastern side along Deas Slough, nearest to where

the bridge will undergo construction in 2017.

Stan Lawson, president of the Marina Garden Estates Homeowners Association, said there is a lot of talk about the bridge in the community.

He’s concerned that property values in Woodward Landing and the area east of Admiral Boulevard will suffer.

Lawson wonders whether the province will have to expropriate land in the area closest to the bridge and what effect it will have on the current development plans.

“I am surprised that building right over top of the current tunnel is the announced option,” he

said. “I think many people in the Marina Garden area expected development either up or down from the Massey Tunnel.”

Lawson said building over top of the Massey Tunnel will create traffic chaos during construction that would add to the one generated by the new homes being built by Captain’s Cove Marina.

He said the association plans to look at the Alex Fraser bridge to see what impact its location has had on the businesses and homes that existed prior to the building of that crossing.

Bill Wheeler, a member the association’s executive, said the bridge can’t be built directly

above the tunnel without interfering with current traffic.

“Either the towers get moved back well from the river’s edge, making it a much longer and more expensive span or the bridge is shifted east or west,” he said, adding east likely isn’t an option because of the existing River House restaurant and other buildings.

Wheeler said the vacant land where the final build of Marina Gardens is proposed is the obvious choice for where the new bridge approach should go.

Neil Chrystal, president of Polygon Homes, said the company will need to study the bridge design – which doesn’t

yet exist – to see how it may impact Marina Gardens.

“It would be a concern if the bridge is too high but we really do not know what the bridge design will be quite yet,” he said.

“I believe the design they have done is conceptual but we do intend to study it as it relates to the buildings we have proposed for the Marina Gardens site.”

The Massey Tunnel Replacement project is expected to cost $3 billion, in line with the Port Mann/Highway 1 Project. The tunnel will be removed to allow larger ships passage upriver. Detailed traffic modeling, including exploring the option of tolls, is expected to happen in the spring.

The Delta Hospital Foundation has raised $5.7 million toward its goal of $7.5 million to expand and enhance Delta Hospital’s medical imaging and lab departments.

The announcement came following its 15th annual Moonlight Gala on Oct. 19, the foundation’s signature fundraiser which this year raised more than $243,900.

“We’re pleased that so many individuals and organizations came out and supported our event this year,” said gala organizing committee chair, Margot Millen in a media release. “I thank each and every one of our sponsors, donors, and volunteers for their generosity. Your contribution to our gala ensures that our hospital’s medical staff has access to the most innovative and state-of the-art equipment so that our community receives the best in patient care.”

The planned expansion for the lab and medical imaging departments is ‘Phase 1’ of Delta Hospital’s master concept plan, a vision for the hospital over the next 20 years.

Both departments currently operate at maximum capacity.

“Our laboratory and medical imaging are the only complete diagnostic services in Delta and last year alone saw over 45,000 patients,” the foundation says on its website.

It notes that other departments such as emergency and surgical day care cannot move forward until the diagnostic services are enhanced.

Massey’s Marine store to close

One of Ladner’s most recognizable waterfront landmark businesses will be downsizing in November, as Massey’s Marine Supply will close its retail store.

Garry Notembomer, 49, has run the Chisholm Street store with his wife Diane for the past 17 years, but a declining customer base has forced him to close down.

Notembomer chalks up that decline to the collapse of both commercial and recreational boating and fishing.

“One of the big ones is the commercial [ fishing] industry has dwindled to almost nothing and now the real big one for us is the fact that for regular blue collar guys it’s really difficult to go boating, it’s become very expensive,” he said.

Notembomer said his recreational customers used to spend the weekend travelling the Gulf Islands, but nowadays the costs of moorage and fuel costs is prohibitively high for the weekend warrior.

A former commercial fisherman, Notembomer bought his first boat when was 18 years old.

Like a kid with his first car, the boat offered trips to places only accessible by ferry. That kind of freedom is only available to the wealthy these days.

“It costs $600 for a weekend of joyriding in the islands so the regular Joe Blow can’t really do it anymore,” he said.

Internet and crossborder shopping has also hurt his bottom line. Customers can order parts from the U.S. and have them shipped and picked up in Point Roberts for prices Notembomer can’t compete with and remain in business.

“When I buy something I have to deal with border brokerage, duties, shipping,” he said.

The Notembomers originally bought the business from namesake Doug Massey in 1996. A commercial fisherman for 12 years, he decided to get out of fishing just as Doug was retiring.

Now 80, at one time Doug Massey ran the marine store for 20 years

with his wife June, daughters Cheryl and Candace and his son Kevin.

The Massey family business began in 1936 as a machine shop across the street on the former site of Ladner’s first ferry landing, which Doug’s father, George Massey, ran along with a shipyard.

In 1975 Doug sold the waterfront property to Nimbus Paddles and moved into a building which originally belonged to Delta Freight Lines, converting it into a machine and welding shop with a retail store for marine supplies.

“We were 60 years in business between my dad and myself,” said Massey.

“So we had a fair amount of knowledge in what the fishing fleet needed and how we could compete with other places.”

Back in the 1970s, commercial fishing accounted for 95 per cent of his income. By the time he sold the shop, it had dropped to parity with recreational boating.

“It was a struggle, it was not easy,” said Massey.

“I worked seven days a week at the time, and I

Independent coal dust monitoring by the Corporation of Delta has found dustfall in Tsawwassen to be “well below” the provincial guideline set

by BC Air Quality for residential areas.

However, the amount of particulate matter containing coal was found to be much higher at a sample location near the Boundary Bay airport next to a railway track used by coal trains.

Last summer – between June 28 to July 29, a dry period when dustfall potential is greatest – staff conducted a monitoring program in response to local residents’ concerns with potential coal dust being spilled by passing trains and from Westshore Terminals’ coal port.

Delta set up four dustfall canisters in various Tsawwassen locations and a fifth north of the airport.

The samples were then sent to Acuren Group Inc. for testing.

According to Delta staff ’s report, Acuren found that all four dustfall monitoring locations in Tsawwassen – sites ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 km from Westshore Terminals’ Roberts Bank coal facility – had “relatively very low overall total dustfall.”

Acuren also found that the canister near the airport, 15 metres from the railway used by coal trains, had about 30 times more particulate matter than the Tsawwassen samples with about 65 per cent coal, exceeding the BC Air Quality guideline.

The report will be forwarded to the Fraser Health Authority for review.

On Monday, Delta council agreed to additional independent dustfall monitoring near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway in North Delta and the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor in East and South Delta during the spring of 2014.

North Delta in response to residents’ concerns.

Chief Administrative Officer George Harvie commended WestShore Terminals for its cooperation.

Earlier this summer, the Delta coal port operator reported spending $8.5 million on a new coal dust mitigation system, including two mobile air monitoring units that can

read particulate matter in the wind.

Staff also noted that Westshore Terminals has installed a camera at the 80th Street rail crossing to monitor trains emitting visible coal dust, and is following up with coal mines and railways when “dusting trains” are observed.

Council also asked staff

to look into the possibility of having operators spray a white, non-toxic material onto coal trains, a practice Harvie and Mayor Lois Jackson observed on a trip to Norway. The spray would help suppress coal dust as well as be an easily visible way of monitoring whether coal on passing trains had been treated.

A good sport for men’s health

former longtime sports broadcaster is coming to Tsawwassen next month to support the Delta Hospital Foundation at its upcoming Men’s Health fundraiser.

The event, hosted by The South Delta Leader at Illuminate Restorante on Nov. 26, takes a playful approach through sports and health in support of a more serious cause by featuring John McKeachie as emcee and hockey legend Dennis Hull as the keynote speaker.

“We like to make it fun for people to spend their money, especially for good causes. And if they say laughter is the best medicine, be prepared to laugh with Dennis Hull,” McKeachie said in a recent interview.

The well-known sports reporter got his start in broadcasting through a summer job at CKDA, a now defunct radio station on Vancouver Island.

“I tell people my summer job lasted 38 years,” he says with a chuckle.

Those nearly four decades included cover-

ing two Olympic Games (in ‘92 and ‘94), the Hockey Night in Canada post-game show, and countless Vancouver Canucks and Whitecaps games. He spent 22 years at the BCTV sports desk before moving on to CBC TV Vancouver and later sports talk radio.

The highlights were always the people, he said.

McKeachie recalled one time when he picked up Wayne Gretzky at his hotel and interviewed the hockey legend one-on-one at English Bay in Vancouver.

“That would never happen now,” he reminisced.

Another time he interviewed Bobby Orr the morning after the infamous Phil Esposito trade in 1975.

“And he said to me, ‘Don’t ask me about the trade.’ So I asked him some inane question about the game that night, and he went on to answer that question and then segue into talking about the trade of his own volition – basically doing me a favour.”

Last year McKeachie, who grew up in Victoria before moving to Vancouver for a job at CKNW, was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame.

On Tuesday, the Canadian Competition Bureau announced

it signed a consent agreement with Sobeys Inc. allowing the company to proceed with its purchase of Canada Safeway’s assets.

“I’ve been living in a toy store, a candy store my whole life,” said the 69-year-old of his career, only now having to work in the “real world.”

He stays active through hockey, golf and basketball, including weekly basketball games with a team of “old timers” he’s played with for close to 35 years, and continues to speak at numerous charity events.

“Sports have been my life, and I’m thrilled I’m able to give back in situations like this,” McKeachie said.

The upcoming Men’s Health event is purposely being hosted during the mustached-crazed month of “Movember,” during which attention is brought to issues such as prostate cancer.

Having had two open heart surgeries and one heart attack, McKeachie’s own personal philosophy when it comes to his health is to be proactive.

“To me one of the biggest dangers for men’s health is denial. If you think there’s something wrong, get it diagnosed, get it fixed. And the sooner you let the medical community know you have an issue, you give them a head start on trying to fix it.”

O

n Monday evening the most contentious development in the history of Delta will go before a public hearing, and residents will once again be asked to provide their input as to whether it’s one that is ultimately beneficial for the community.

As one resident recently put it, everything that could be said about Southlands has already been said ad nauseum. Most people made up their mind on the issue long ago.

If there are any fence sitters on the proposal, surely they are the tiny minority who don’t know about what’s being offered.

For those who don’t, Century Group is looking to develop 950 homes on 20 percent of the worst soil in the 217 hectares of land in Boundary Bay. The majority of the land will be preserved for wildlife and habitat, and millions of dollars spent remediating the soil so local farmers can finally make a buck in commercial agriculture.

Soil studies conducted on the site over the years reveals that the very best soils are still at a lower agricultural grade than would be needed to produce quality Delta-made veggies.

And no farmers that already operate here have the kind of money to pony up for soil remediation. Century does.

The original family that owned the land since the 1920s, the Spetifores, declared that fact more than 30 years ago. Nobody listened then.

In many respects Tsawwassen seems like a timeless community that has barely changed since the first proposal to put 2,000 homes on the Southlands was rejected by the council of the day.

That’s because it really hasn’t. Sure, there’s some residential infill here and there and a few apartments have been built, but according to Statistics Canada, Tsawwassen has actually lost 1,000 people in the last 30 years.

Think about that for a second. While every community in the Lower Mainland has exploded, Tsawwassen has shrunk.

There’s a reason the local First Nations have a neighbourhood plan for 1,584 single-detached and townhouses, and 280 apartment units. The marketplace abhors a vaccum as much as nature.

This is the best possible compromise for Tsawwassen. A low density, rural residential neighbourhood with a huge farming component. Everybody should win here.

It will also help merchants struggling in the 56th Street/12 Avenue downtown core to provide them with the customer base they need to stay in business.

At the very least, go to the public hearings (Oct. 28-30 at the South Delta Rec Centre), listen to the proposal, and keep an open mind.

A fishing village without the fishermen

T

he village of Ladner was at one time a vibrant commercial fishing village, with fishermen every bit as common on the river as the farmers along the shore.

That shore was once littered with gill nets and trawlers, thatched huts for cleaning fish, and stores dedicated to supplying the needs of fishermen.

But most of those huts have either fallen down or sunken into the sands of time.

The boats which remain are now relics of a forgotten era, a picture postcard for a visiting tourist. The fishermen are either gone or are working other jobs.

The closure of Massey’s Marine Supply store in Ladner marks one more nail in the coffin of her fishing past.

So, what happened? The collapse of B.C.’s commercial fishing industry has been well documented, as has the sockeye salmon stocks that supplied it.

The commercial capture fishery in B.C. reached its peak in 1993, climbing to $355.3 million before the bottom dropped out on the industry. Between 1993 and 1999, GDP in the capture fishery industry fell by more than two thirds (67.1 per cent).

And from the period 2000 to 2011, GDP fell a further 24 per cent with a bottoming out value of just $95.2 million in 2010.

The chief reason for those numbers has been the switch from fishing to farming salmon. While aquaculture has thrived in the face of wild stock evaporation, the capture salmon industry in B.C. fell to an abysmal value of $2.8 in 2008 from a high of $116.6 million in 1990.

Those changes have been catastrophic for employment in fishing as well, with a 65.9 per cent loss in jobs since the millennial year.

That sockeye salmon collapse in the Fraser River spawned a $26 million, three-volume, 1,200-page report from Bruce Cohen in 2012. But the report generated more questions than answers.

Although the report speculated on contaminants, disease, predation, food shortages, and rising water temperatures, in the end no conclusive reasons were found.

There are theories, anecdotally, of course. There are commercial catch limits, but overfishing is a concern. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has never defined the true meaning of allowing the unmitigated capture of fish for “food, social and ceremonial fishing

by First Nations” which can be used as a cover for commercial fishing operations.

But First Nations can’t be blamed. It is a mixture of globalization – resulting in cheaper imported fish from Asia than can be harvested at cost here – with a federal government that hasn’t adapted to the needs of the commercial fishing industry.

DFO may once have been able to help, but instead has been preoccupied with aquatic life in farmer’s ditches and roadside creeks.

More’s the pity for Ladner’s lost fishing heritage.

Letters to the editor Scarecrows stolen

Beware of exclusionary views

On October 9, 2013 the Grade 3 students of Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen went on a field trip to the Ladner Community Gardens. We visit the gardens frequently to learn about plants and sustainability.

During this trip, we made scarecrows to decorate the gardens. Unfortunately, the very next day, we heard that our scarecrows were stolen!

We were depressed, mad, ferocious, angry, upset, heart-broken, disappointed, devastated and outraged! We decided to write this letter to the local newspaper so that our community would know what happened.

We wanted the word spread about this villainous act. We worked really hard on these scarecrows and are very disappointed that they were stolen from such a special place as the Ladner Community Gardens. The gardens serve our community by providing garden space and food to the food banks.

By writing this letter, we hope that our scarecrows may be found or that whoever took them will bring them back. We do not want to be sad anymore.

I love Tsawwassen and the very special neighbourhood of Boundary Bay that I have lived in for over 20 years. The Bay has been a safe haven where I have raised my children, forged lasting friendships and created great memories. Boundary Bay is my neighbourhood but Tsawwassen is my community and is of equal importance to me.

As a result, it has saddened and irritated me to see Letters to the Editor from a vocal minority of Bay residents leaving the impression that the majority of Boundary Bay does not support the Southlands proposal. This is not my experience within the Bay. Last week was the tipping point. I received a hand delivered letter marked in bold “Boundary Bay Property Owner.” In talking about the Southlands proposal this letter states, “The proposed ‘connector road’ would open Boundary Bay to all of upper Tsawwassen while providing no benefit to us.” This exclusionary view towards upper Tsawwassen can only create an unfriendly atmosphere within our community.

This statement is then followed by the quote: “...beach parties are already a problem for waterfront residents. The proposed ‘connector road’ would provide a direct route to the beach and increase activity by shortening the distance from upper Tsawwassen.”

These comments are made as if Boundary Bay is only meant for those that live here and

connecting upper Tsawwassen to Boundary Bay is a very bad thing. This is not how a healthy community functions. A healthy community shares resources - it does not separate or wall itself off from its neighbours. This bar the door, “it’s our beach” thinking is not in the best interest of Tsawwassen as a whole.

So to all my neighbours in Tsawwassen, know that as a resident of Boundary Bay I love being part of Tsawwassen; that I and many other Boundary Bay residents fully support the Southlands proposal and the extensive benefits and access it could provide for all of Tsawwassen.

Boon, but for who?

Re: Letter, “Southlands will be a boon,” Oct. 18, 2013, The South Delta Leader Yes, it will be a boon but not for Tsawwassen but for the developer: Sean Hodgins. I have lived in the Boundary Bay area for over 12 years and when they were a few years back farming the Southlands, I never once encountered dust and stinks. Maybe he has this confused with the farms east of Ladner a few years back. Also, the smaller cheaper houses will not be given away. I

f the measure of a good parent is the love, attention, and patience shown to their children, then one-yearold Carter has the best parents anybody could hope for.

His biological father, Ray Reitsma, cradles him gently while feeding him his bottle of formula in their Tsawwassen home. Nearby, his other father, Will Fong, is talking about life as a same-sex married couple, and the “blessing” of bringing Carter into this world.

Will had never even held a baby until one year ago today (Oct. 25), when Carter’s surrogate mother gave birth, ending an odyssey five years in the making.

“We tried five years through every model – turkey basters to IVF (in vitro fertilization) – it was our last try,” he says, his voice trembling.

The couple, who have been legally married since 2004, spent $100,000 trying to have a baby. In the end it required Ray’s sperm through a clinic in Victoria, a fertility clinic in Toronto, an egg donor in Kitchener, and a surrogate mother in Chilliwack.

Ray says it was in 2007 that they began in earnest to see whether parenthood was possible.

“We thought maybe we should go for it while we still have time, while we’re still young enough to put all of our energy into it,” says the 47-yearold.

Carter begins crying and Will picks him and begins dancing the waltz with his son. A peaceful look washes over his face.

Unlike his husband, Ray always knew he wanted to be a dad one day, and says he felt it was meant to be.

But being gay meant making peace with the fact it might never happen. He resisted the idea of being gay until his late ‘20s because part of him didn’t want it to be true. He felt that admitting it might be closing the door on a family and parenthood.

Will knew he was gay since his earliest moments and was the first to accept who he was inside.

“I also knew at the time it was not OK,” recalls the 51-year-old, who grew up the small town of Port Alberni where the men are rugged and tough.

Having parents from China made it difficult for Will to “come out” and admit his sexual orientation.

“I remember it was the late ‘70s and my dad and I were watching a news story on TV about a demonstration for human rights and gay rights,” says Will.

“And my dad just turned to me and said, ‘homosexuals, that’s disgusting.’ And I just thought, you’re talking to your son.”

In a scarring incident when he was 13, a person spit at him in the streets because they suspected he was gay.

But the couple says attitudes have changed and they feel blessed to live in a country like Canada where it’s OK to have a family like theirs.

Will says there are countries, like Russia, where homosexuals are relentlessly persecuted.

Ray grew up in the Lower Mainland and says he didn’t experience the same kind of homophobia. But the bullies were still there.

Sometimes, people just find a difference to pick on, whether it’s being gay, or just a red-haired kid with freckles.

“As a kid they were kind of hurtful because I still remember them,” says Ray. “Oh, you must have stood out in the rain and your hair went all rusty.’”

When Ray first met Will’s parents in 1999, they shunned him and pretended he didn’t exist. Although he wasn’t introduced as his “boyfriend” it was clear the two were a couple. Will compares it to the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy for the U.S. military.

“I think they knew, but they didn’t acknowledge him, literally for seven

years,” he recalls. “It was like he didn’t exist.”

Despite being shunned, Will says he was proud Ray didn’t give up on his family. He kept coming to family events, smiling, and being his friendly and warm self.

One day everything changed quietly, but profoundly.

Will says his mother doesn’t show her love through hugs or kisses.

She shows it by giving him more home-cooked food than anybody could possibly eat. As they were leaving a family dinner, she handed Will a second bag of food.

From then on if Will ever showed up alone his mother would ask why Ray didn’t come and when he’s coming back.

After Carter was born, that bond grew even stronger. Despite the fact Will doesn’t have any biological connection to Carter, his parents dote on their new grandson.

Two weeks ago when Will went to pick up

Thanksgiving dinner, Ray says Will’s mother turned and put her hand affectionately on his forearm.

“She said, ‘Ray, you’re a very good man. You and William are very good fathers to Carter. He’s a very lucky boy.’”

Ray’s voice chokes up slightly as he recalls the moment.

Will thinks perhaps the initial wall built between his husband and parents was that they were “mourning the loss of grandchildren.”

The seniors living in their neighbourhood were just as delighted when Carter was born.

They bring by presents and food and leave baby books at their doorstep.

Their next-door neighbour, Dee, insisted on giving them a baby shower and even proclaimed herself Carter’s “honourary grandmother.” But Will says there are several other seniors who would dispute that they, in fact, hold that distinction.

After Carter was born the neighbourhood all pitched in to buy them a high chair and stroller, while others knitted clothing and quilts.

“Both of us got very emotional at that shower because in my world where someone spits on you just because they think you’re gay, to being in the shower of acceptance and having him (Carter) finally realized was just a journey and a half,” says Will, his eyes watering.

Ray says he was surprised at how welcoming Tsawwassen has been to their non-traditional family, but now he feels silly he ever thought otherwise.

“I’m hoping that when we look back 10 years from now we’ll think there’s no need to even talk about it,” he says.

“A newspaper wouldn’t even be interested because it just won’t be news.”

By Kerry Vital Imagine waking up in the morning and walking next door to work. Sounds like a dream for those who commute every morning and evening.

That dream came true for one Vancouver homeowner, with the help of Kerr Construction.

“It’s a beautiful home,” says Doug Kerr, founder of Kerr Construction. “One of the aspects of the house that I think turned out really well was

that it looks and feels like a home even though it sits on top of a parking structure beside a commercial building. With the landscaping, the green wall and the exterior finishes it feels like a home and yet still belongs in the environment with its commercial surroundings.”

Because of the regulations governing commercial sites, it took a year to get approval from the City of Vancouver, and the home had to match commercial fire codes due to its location. It was also built using steel construction in order to fit in with the city regulations, as wood framing is not allowed. The noise from the existing commercial space was one of the considerations when constructing the home, as well as the space

constraints.

“We had to be mindful of the existing active commercial businesses on site and had to keep the noise contained and the site tidy and orderly,” Kerr says. “Space was tight and anything heavy has to be craned in as there was not vehicle access to the rooftop patio where the home was built.”

The shape of the home was determined by the patio that was already in place, while the exterior finishes were chosen to complement the commercial building next door.

Home built on commercial building site but looks like it’s always been there “ from page.12 square,” says Kerr. “So the home had to be designed to fit the irregular shape.”

The 52-inch-wide pivoting front door suits the commercial space, but also showcases the warmth of the home. Inside, the kitchen island counter and recessed ceiling above match the shape of the home, lending a modern touch to the space.

The homeowner, an older gentleman, now has several features that will help as he ages. Among them is a convenience kitchen on the second floor to ensure that he can entertain on his deck without having to go up and down the stairs to the main kitchen. There are also flush transitions on the floor in case a wheelchair is needed in the future.

Smart home automation is included throughout, making it easy for the homeowner to keep connected.

“My favourite part of the home is the floating wall beside the open staircase,” Kerr says. “It was such an engineering feat to make an eight-foothigh wall solid without being attached at the top or sides. It provides the definition of space without blocking out all the light from the skylights in the stairwell as well as adds a little mystery of how it was constructed.”

The view from the home is spectacular, so the exterior deck was constructed to maximize the homeowner’s view, enhanced by the large windows and skylights.

Among the interesting features of the home is a textured green wall above the entrance to the parking garage below the home. The greenery already surrounding the home was kept, with new plants added as well. Now, the home looks like it was always there.

“The homeowner was very involved in the day-to-day decisions of the home that took just over a year to build,” Kerr says. “He had a vision of how he wanted it to look and how it would function. It really is his vision. Our job was just to figure out how it could be built.”

Now the homeowner can enjoy his new home without having to worry about commuting, and he has plenty of space to entertain or relax.

“He loves the way the simple modern interior of the home showcases his art collection and his favourite Fin Yule furniture made in his Danish homeland,” says Kerr.

If you’re in the market for some new furniture, Walker said the latest trend is leaning towards a more refined, ‘glam-rustic’ look to pieces that are on the lighter side, with fine features and tapered, slim legs.

“Overall, it’s a little more sophisticated, but at the same time exuding a casual glamour and relaxed look,” she said.

Natural wood finishes are still a popular choice – especially in coffee tables, which are often placed in groupings at different heights for a tapered look.

“These pieces are not only multifunctional, but they create a dimension of a square centre of a room.”

Other styles of look out for this season include designs with hints of metallic and luxury accent fabrics, including velvet and faux fur, as well as the ever-popular tribal motifs and animal prints.

By Kerry Vital The winter holidays are fast approaching, and you’ve probably already seen the first sprinklings of snowflakes and reindeer in stores. It’s never too early to start thinking about what you’d like to include in your holiday decor plans.

“Traditional colours are being used in a new way,” says Vickie Maxwell, media coordinator for Bouclair Homes. “Red is mixed with gold and black, giving it a strong, glamourous feel to a very traditional holiday colour.”

Red, gold and green is usually what comes to mind when Christmas is discussed, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick with those traditional colours.

Bouclair is moving beyond that this year with collections that feature teal, silver and white. Keeping your own style in mind will make for a far better look than trying to stick with something that’s not your style.

Sparkle has always been an integral part of the holidays for some, and you’ll find plenty of options in stores.

“Emerging trends for holiday decor is anything that sparkles and mixing contrasting elements like earthy wood and metallic accents together,” says Pottery Barn spokesperson Kendra Stewart.

“Pair big wooden candle pillars with shiny mercury glass and earthy ceramics for a contrast of rustic and luxe elements to create a casual yet festive look for the season.”

Pottery Barn is updating some of the traditional holiday items this year, including glittery reindeer and sequined woodland creatures.

“The holidays are all about creating an inviting space to entertain and celebrate

the season, and I love the tradition of decorating with my nostalgic pieces and pairing them with new seasonal updates,” says Stewart.

“This year, bring a little warmth and sparkle to every room with accents of mercury glass and a chunky knit pillow or faux fur throw.”

The holidays can also be a great time to try out some do-it-yourself ideas.

Cutting out snowflakes from folded paper is a time-honoured tradition, stemming from elementary school experiences for many. Setting your kids free with the crayons and glitter makes for an easy afternoon craft project.

Another great idea is to gather some pine cones from your local park and hanging them up with some ribbon. For a little extra touch, try spray-painting them and rolling them in glitter before hanging them.

You can also find a new use for some of the tree ornaments that you don’t want to put on the tree. Filling a glass bowl or vase with them and using it as a centrepiece adds some sparkle and colour to a holiday table. You can also do this with pieces of candy or fruit, or jingle bells from a craft store.

Strings of lights are also a great way to decorate for the season, no matter which holiday you celebrate. Running them along a fireplace mantel or inside a window frame will lend some more sparkle to your space. Or, try wrapping them up the banister of your stairs, accented with some tinsel garland.

Decorating for the holidays is all a matter of individual style, whether you want to go all-out with the lights and wreathes or just decorate a tree for you and your family to enjoy.

A touch of celebrity in your home decor Well-known home decor mavens and celebrities alike have released home lines, offering everything from bed linens to organizing solutions to furniture and art pieces. Stores all over Canada carry lines from names you’ll see in magazines and on television.

By Kerry Vital A famous name can lend some cachet to almost anything, from movies to beverages to clothing. In recent years, home decor has become one of the trendy things to link a name to, whether that person’s a fashion designer, celebrity or television personality.

“We decided to partner with Debbie Travis because she complements the broad assortment of home decor products that Canadian Tire carries,” says Unha Park, manager of private label brands at Canadian Tire. “Debbie appeals strongly to our target market of parents with kids, and particularly to female shoppers, who are already nearly half of our customer base.”

Travis has been a fixture on television screens with her variety of home shows on the CBC, as well as her weekly newspaper column and several books. Among the products she cur-

rently offers at Canadian Tire are paint, furniture and decor items.

Her “Christmas collection is very popular, with a wide range of coordinating tree trim and decor that lets the customer transform their home for the holiday season,” Park says. “Other popular items include the leather furniture pieces, including an ottoman with storage, and storage and organizing baskets offering stylish and practical decorating solutions.”

Canadian Tire isn’t the only store working with a well-known name.

Hudson’s Bay has stocked home goods from clothing designer Ralph Lauren for years, as well as products from high-end designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, Marchesa and Monique Lhuillier.

Other outdoor options that Gallop, Doise and Malhas have seen lately have been fire tables and full outdoor fireplaces.

“People are looking for an indoor-outdoor life,” says Gallop. “You can install a fire table that looks just like a coffee table and can be used as a coffee table outside, with a linear burner in the middle.”

She’s also seen firepits within an outdoor dining table.

“Natural gas brings warmth,” Gallop says. “It obviously brings physical warmth but also a warm ambiance.”

This is especially important in the living areas, where you want to gather with friends and family. Natural gas fireplaces are both cozy and convenient. FortisBC notes that you can even pre-program some models of gas fireplaces to turn on at a specific time to warm up your space in the morning or before you get home from work.

Natural gas appliances can be found in many styles, including traditional free-standing ranges, built-in ranges, professional-looking cooktops and single or double wall ovens.

“It’s a more professional kind of cooking,” says Sarah Gallop of SGDI. It’s also faster. FortisBC notes that natural gas cooktops heat up instantly and provide precise temperature control. Natural gas ovens are naturally convection ovens, circulating air continuously around your food and ensuring that it cooks or bakes evenly.

But it’s not just the kitchen that can benefit from a natural gas makeover. Outdoor spaces and living areas are also tops on the list.

“Everybody likes an outdoor firepit now,” says Susanne Doise of Sensitive Design Inc. “You want to create an outdoor space that you can use for three seasons of the year.”

When it comes to that outdoor space, you have many more options than just the firepit. Doise says she’s recently designed entire outdoor kitchens, which can be easily connected to your home’s natural gas supply. She and Gallop also note the increase in people installing patio heaters so they don’t have to head inside as soon as it starts getting a bit chilly.

“It’s kind of like camping in your own backyard,” says Gallop. “You get the informality of outdoor space with the convenience of natural gas.”

And convenient it is. Natural gas is available at the push of a button, so you no longer need to wait for your fireplace or cooktop to heat up or worry about running out of propane for your outdoor barbecue.

It’s also more energy-efficient for space and water heating, saving you money on your heating bills.

“There’s a lot of flexibility when it comes to gas fireplaces,” says Gallop. “You can convert an old wood-burning fireplace, customize how it looks, whatever you want to suit your style, space and budget.”

Doise agrees, saying, “A fireplace in the living room becomes a focal point. You want to place everything around it.”

While you may not be contemplating a move any time soon, installing natural gas in your home will also increase the resale value in the future.

“It’s a really nice selling feature,” says Malhas. “People want natural gas when they’re looking for a home.”

On the evidence of two days driving the funky-looking all-electric i3 through the narrow streets of old Amsterdam and alongside the picturesque canals of rural Holland, the German manufacturer may have a winner.

For starters, it is simply great fun to drive. The lithium-ion battery, encased in an aluminum cage below the five-seater cabin, provides enough instant zap to the electric motor to propel the car smoothly to 100 klicks in less than eight seconds. Left the stopwatch

Reach Child and Youth Development Society has reached the quarter-way milestone in their quest to raise $4 million to build a new centre in the heart of Ladner that would service at-risk children and their families.

The non-profit organization received a $60,000 boost from the Port Gala that took place in June, the first of a three-year $180,000 commitment to that has pushed their fundraising efforts in the “Building for Children Together” project to $1 million.

They’re giving us a lot of support in terms of advice and guidance on this as well,” said Reach communications director Cathy Nidoski about Port Metro Vancouver’s commitment. “It’s something that is helping us.”

The Port Gala sponsors include Port Metro Vancouver, Westshore Terminals (who have also committed $100,000 in addition to the campaign), Fraser Surrey Docks, Global Container Terminals, CP World and Western Stevedoring.

“What we’re looking at now is towards reaching our next goal of $2 million by approaching companies in the community to partner with us in the project,” said Nidoski.

The Building for Children Together project is a partnership between the Corporation of Delta, Reach Society and the Ladner Tsawwassen Kinsmen Club. Delta has provided the land, which is valued in excess of $1 million, leaving Reach will raise the funds for construction.

The new building will be a 2-storey structure of approximately 20,000 square feet, located at 5050 47th Ave., replacing the current Ladner Kinsmen House. ❙ Continued on P.3

It is situated along bus and walking routes enabling accessibility and independence for families, and children and youth with special needs.

Reach began its fundraising efforts in 2010. Although it was originally estimated to be a four year campaign, Nidoski says 2017 is more realistic goal now.

“If it happens before then, great, we’ll be very pleased about that,” she said. “But we have to sort of consider the fact that it’s tough right now with the economy.”

The new centre provides a new home base for helping at-risk children, including therapy and counseling rooms, youth program areas, specialized lending libraries and an inclusive preschool with an accessible community playground.

There will be an expanded space for

municipal, business and community use, a club meeting space for the Kinsmen Club, as well as room for other organizations in the community partnering in the goal of supporting children and youth with special needs.

“The idea of building in the centre of Ladner has been going on for quite some time with Reach and it was sort of the right timing to start this campaign in the community,” said Nidoski. “There’s been a lot going on with development in the community.”

Reach wants to secure most of the money before beginning construction but once they get started the construction time is estimated to take just one year.

Balvir Bahia is like a book that the George Mackie Library borrowed and hasn’t returned in nearly 35 years.

And like any book, it started on Page 1 – specifically when she was hired as a page, way back in 1979.

Bahia has a story to tell – at a time when North Delta’s library is celebrating 30 years at its present location (it had opened in 1972 a few blocks to the east at the building now shared by Watershed Artworks and the North Delta Potters Guild).

Bahia has been around long enough to recall chatting with Betty, the then-elderly widow of the Delta alderman and library namesake who, through fundraising, paved the way for the library before he passed away in 1971.

“I called her Mrs. Mackie,” says Bahia, now the operations manager for Delta Libraries.

“I wasn’t so presumptuous.”

Bahia “discovered” the public library when she was a student at Richardson Elementary.

Nothing quite says autumn in Delta like the throngs of snow geese flying by the thousands, their incessant honking like an aerial traffic jam overhead.

Renowned for their white bodies, black-tipped wings, pink bill and distinct call, snow geese arrived en masse in the Lower Mainland last weekend, looking for forage foods after their long journey south from the Arctic’s Wrangel Island.

Wrangel Island is located in the Arctic Ocean astride the 180th meridian, between the Chukchi Sea and East Siberian Sea. The birds fly approximately 5,000 kilometres along the Pacific Flyway to the Lower Mainland, with most settling in the Fraser-Skagit river estuaries over winter.

Dr. Jasper Lament, CEO of The Nature Trust of British Columbia, says the best place to see the birds is generally on Westham Island in the Fraser River Estuary, especially from the Reifel Bird Sanctuary.

“In this case, the snow geese are particularly drawn to the

farmland which provides excellent winter forage for migratory birds,” he said. “If you don’t have plans this weekend, it’s worth a trip and something all the family will enjoy.”

Each year, snow geese fly from the Arctic to B.C. in the thousands, and can be viewed in Richmond and Delta from today to mid-December. Last year, the mid-winter count of snow geese flocks in the Fraser River and Skagit River was 70,000, according to Lament.

Foraging on crops used to pit farmers against geese in the past, but each year the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust works with local farmers to establish “lure crops” that the birds can feast on over the winter.

After the summer crop harvest, farmers prepare their fields and sow a variety of different cover crops, such as barley, clover, and winter wheat. Establishing a thick field of cover cropped vegetation protects agricultural soil from heavy winter rains, as well as providing feed for waterfowl.

According to program coordinator Christine Terpsma, seeding a cover crop can also provide an alternate feeding area for overwintering birds, who oftentimes can damage local hay fields by overgrazing.

“Delta farmers have worked incredibly hard this year to harvest the last of their crops, while

sowing nearly 3,000 acres of high quality cover crops for the upcoming winter season,” she said.

“We will be monitoring fields over the winter to assess the degree to which waterfowl are using these sources of feed.”

One group that welcomes the birds each year are hunters, who celebrated the official opening of the season last Saturday on Thanksgiving weekend. Each hunter has a quota limit of 10 snow geese each day, according to Delta-Ladner Rod and Gun Club member Mark McDonald, who has been hunting the birds in Ladner since he was a boy.

Popular locations for hunting snow geese include Brunswick Point and Westham Island, although securing a permit for the latter is difficult, according to McDonald.

“I would say the numbers are up this year,” he said, but added there isn’t an accurate count because Russia withdrew their biologist from Wrangel Island.

McDonald said conservationists estimate Delta has enough forage to support roughly 50,000 to 60,000 birds. But hunters provide a form of population control for those excess numbers of geese that would otherwise be unable to find forage. And most hunters eat the geese they shoot, so there’s little waste.

“I had snow goose stir fry for thanksgiving dinner,” he said.

Volunteers are needed for 12th Annual Operation Red Nose Campaign serving the communities of Delta and Richmond One of the surest signs of the change of seasons, Operation Red Nose is putting out the annual call for volunteers. Operation Red Nose campaign has become a vital safe driving service during the holiday season.

Since 2002, Delta Gymnastics Society has been the local host of the award winning national program that strives to keep the roads safe while at the same time supports amateur youth sport in the community.

“On any given year, we need over 400 volunteers to provide nine nights of safe driving. This year, we estimate we need another 50 volunteers to keep up with the demand,” said Carlene Lewall, Operation Red Nose Coordinator. “We want to encourage our community to help us keep our roads and families safe by supporting this program. Invite your spouse, co-workers or friends to come one night and drive people to and

from your community. It is a fun and rewarding experience as you are actively helping to keep the roads safe during the busy holiday season; then you can go out and have fun and call Operation Red Nose – it goes both ways.”

Volunteers have to be 19 years and over and are needed to fill many positions.

Areas include dispatch office, greeters, drivers and navigators. All volunteers are required to complete a criminal record check prior to participating in the program at no cost to the volunteer. All volunteers receive an orientation prior to their shift.

This year Operation Red Nose, in partnership with ICBC, Richmond RCMP, Delta Police and many local sponsors, will service the communities of Delta and Richmond on Nov 29, 30, Dec 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 212 and 31st (New Year’s Eve) between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. All sponsorship and donations received to the campaign will be directed to the Delta Sports Development Centre, helping the
