The future is electric AMSTERDAM – BMW has joined the race for the electric car dollar. On the evidence of two days driving the funky-looking all-electric i3 through the narrow streets of old Amsterdam and alongside the picturesque canals of rural Holland, the German manufacturer may have a winner. For starters, it is simply great fun to drive. The lithium-ion battery, encased in an aluminum cage below the five-seater cabin, provides enough instant zap to the electric motor to propel the car smoothly to 100 klicks in less than eight seconds. Left the stopwatch

at home, but counting “one-and-two etc.” to count seconds, my lips barely mouthed “six” before the speedo leapt from 80 to 120 km/h while passing. It handles beautifully at any speed and hugs the road; thanks to the technology-laden aluminum platform, that gives it a very low centre of gravity. Mazda3 ahead of the pack in the compact class Mazda, on a global scale, is a small company, so developing new products is a major undertaking. This is why they shared engineering with the Ford Motor Company for many years but that relationship dissolved in 2010. Instead of modifying existing, co-developed vehicle platforms, engines and transmission, the company took a radical turn in the way it develops new products. I’m sure by now you have seen Mazda’s ads for “Skyactiv Technology.” This is the name for its radical design and manufacturing approach. By engineering vehicles from a blank sheet of paper, Mazda could focus on simplifying the manufacturing process to save money, a crucial part of this small company’s survival. This new 2014 Mazda3 is the third vehicle to be built using Mazda’s Skyactiv Technology, behind the Mazda CX-5 SUV and Mazda6 sedan.

Mitsubishi’s Outlander improves on a good thing By Rob Beintema SQUAMISH, B.C. - Step one on the comeback trail: play to your strengths. After paring the deadwood out of a dated lineup over the past few years (Galant, Montero, Endeavor and Eclipse), Mitsubishi is concentrating on what they are currently doing best – compact cars and compact SUVs - before following a step-by-step schedule of new vehicle introductions. The i-MiEV remains as a small-niche, electrical eccentricity. The Lancer is still the company’s breadand-butter mainstay with a wide range of choices, from entry-level models to the esoteric Evo. And the RVR remains an affordable first-step offering for CUV intenders. And now, a new 2014 Outlander rejuvenates the compact sport utility lineup with a new look, new levels of quality, improved performance, better fuel economy and a list of segment-first technologies packaged in a product that will sell for about the same price as its predecessor. Mitsubishi boasts that the new Outlander will be among Canada’s first compact SUVs to offer advanced safety technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and a Forward Collision Mitigation system. The 2014 Outlander is all new. Well, up to a point. A study of the spec sheet shows a lot of common dimensional measurements shared with its predecessor. But chassis improvements for the 2014 model year include a re-tuned suspension and the extensive use of high-tensile strength steel to lighten the load. An added sub-frame, key reinforcements and redesigned engine mounts contribute to a more refined ride with reduced noise, vibration and harshness. That same emphasis on refinement is found inside the Outlander where added insulation and improved weather stripping complement redesigned mirrors and more aerodynamic structural lines for less noise and

a quieter ride. Passenger comfort takes precedence in the new interior layout. Second row seats receive 170 mm more fore and aft travel for additional legroom. Third row seats are 120 mm wider and also add 60 mm more legroom. But, of course, this extra space had to come from somewhere, so cargo room is down significantly to 292 litres, with 968 litres behind the second row and 1,792 litres behind the first row (compared to 422 litres/1,025 litres/2,056 litres in last year’s model). A new power tailgate is available for easier loading. New, high-grade materials inside include padded surfaces, soft-touch finishes, silver highlights and gloss black appliqués. The Americans opted for faux wood accents but Mitsubishi Canada elected for a higher-tech look with carbon fibre-like contrasts. Available new conveniences include dual-zone automatic air conditioning, next-gen SD navigation and a premium audio system with 6.1-inch QVGA liquid crystal display and multi-function touch panel. Even the tilt/telescopic steering wheel has been redesigned to better match the uptick in quality and ergonomic design. And the new level of sophistication carries over outside to a more refined, smoother-lined exterior. The biggest change is the new front grille, slimmer and less open with a hint of Montero heritage, tied

4WD ECO, 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock. The top-of-theline GT model comes with a Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system that splits torque delivery from sideto-side as well as fore and aft. Drive selection choices for S-AWC models include AWC ECO, Normal, Snow and Lock. Customers can best explore trim levels online but it is worth noting that even the entry-level Outlander ES 2WD comes well-equipped with standards that include seven airbags, four wheel ABS disc brakes with Brake-Assist, EBD and Brake Override System, Active Stability Control, Hill-Start Assist, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering wheel with cruise and audio buttons, power locks, power windows and power heated mirrors, keyless entry and security system, heated front seats, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat with recline, and a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with Bluetooth 2.0 hands-free cell phone interface with streaming audio and voice control. That’s quite a package to build on and, along with the wide variety of configurations and choices in the new Outlander lineup, an indicator of just how serious Mitsubishi is about its rejuvenation plans. There was some speculation about Mitsubishi’s future, especially after Suzuki’s pullout of North America. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of those Suzuki dealers scrambling to join Mitsubishi Canada’s network, a network that they are planning to grow to 110 dealers from the current 85. Step two on the comeback trail – add product. Mitsubishi Canada will introduce a thrifty new three-cylinder Mirage subcompact in the near future, and later this fall, the 2014 Outlander PHEV (plugin hybrid electric vehicle) will also offer an added alternative to an updated Outlander SUV lineup that has sold over 50,000 models in Canada since it’s introduction in 2002. Personally, I liked the old gape-mouth grille — Evo-inspired, compared to everything from shark snouts to Sabre Jet air intakes and copied across the board by companies from Ford to Audi. But Mitsubishi really had nowhere else to go, design-wise, so dialing back the styling emphasis from sporty to sophisticated was an inevitable turn of the cycle, and the softer, more contoured look contributes to a slightly slicker 0.33 cD of drag. Under the skin, the 2014 Outlander two engine choices starting with a new 2.4-litre four cylinder and a reworked version of the 3.0-litre V6. Both engines are rated with about the same power levels as their predecessors but both have also been technologically tweaked for better performance and improved fuel economy. The new 166 hp 2.4-litre SOHC four-cylinder replaces a more complicated DOHC design and its lightweight mass contributes to the 2014 Outlander’s 100 kg reduction in curb weight. This engine is mated to a CVT transmission. The 227-hp 3.0-litre V-6 engine gets high-ignition spark plugs and an improved exhaust system for better fuel consumption and reduced emissions. While other manufacturers are moving to turbo-powered four-cylinders, Mitsubishi feels they can appeal to some customers by retaining a V6 option. A six-speed Sportronic transmission mated to this engine has a new final drive ratio for improved fuel economy. Both engines pull adequately but the V6 offers a little more moxie and a 1,588 kg (3,500 lb) tow rating. The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander lineup also offers fiveor seven-passenger accommodation, two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive choices, and three trim levels – ES, SE and GT – that can be optioned further with various equipment packages. Kia goes upmarket with 2014 Cadenza sedan By Neil Moore Once known as the builder of “cheap and cheerful” autos, Kia has been on a tear as of late. Much of the credit goes to design chief Peter Schreyer, who after making his mark at Volkswagen and Audi, has taken the company lineup from drab to delightful. But the automaker’s success is down to more than just appearances, as today’s Kia models not only look sharper both inside and out, but benefit from better build quality and loads of tech that was once the domain of vehicles much higher up the pricing ladder. The 2014 Cadenza is the new flagship for this Korean automaker. If you haven’t been paying attention to the new Kia, you may think the Cadenza is simply a Schreyer spin on an existing Hyundai – and to that point, you’d be partially correct. The Cadenza, known as the K7 in overseas markets, isn’t based on the current Hyundai Genesis sedan, but on the Azera which is still available in the U.S., although discontinued here after 2009. And because of this connection, it gets the same engine – a DOHC 3.3-litre V6 with gasoline direct injection that produces 293 hp and 255 lb/ft of torque. It is mated to a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters that drives the front wheels. The rear-wheel-drive Genesis, on the other hand, is powered by a 3.8-litre mill that delivers more brawn (333 hp and 291 lb/ft), but in a slightly larger and heavier vehicle that will cost you more dough. Different cars tapping the same segment – but for this type of vehicle, it’s less about muscle and more about style and premium amenities. And on the latter two counts, the Cadenza does not disappoint. Not that this near-luxury, full-size sedan is a slouch when you plant the pedal. Its 1,700 kilograms will

launch from rest to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds, under the control of an autobox that does its job quietly and smoothly – even under hard throttle. Cadenza’s Euro styling, however, moves me even more than its powerplant. With its broad shoulders, wide stance and pronounced wheel arches over the massive 19-inch alloys on my Premium tester, this car looks firmly planted. First impressions are bold, with Kia’s signature tigershark grille sprayed black with a chrome surround, and flanked by swept-back projector headlamps over a row of LEDs. This fronts a long, contoured hood and steeply-raked windshield, all contributing to an elegant silhouette and overall look that wouldn’t be out of place on the Autobahn. In rear, LED taillights and twin ovoid exhausts complete the Cadenza’s polished exterior. This vehicle is available in two trim levels: base at $37,795 and premium (as tested) at $44,995) and the differences between the two, aside from wheel size (you get 18-inchers on base), and the higher trim’s panoramic sunroof, are really more about tech. For the extra $7,200 you also get smart cruise control, blind spot detection and lane departure warning – the latter two of which you can turn off when, not if, they become annoying. Premium also provides driver’s seat cooling and memory, rear heated seats, power tilt/telescopic steering (also heated), electric rear sunshade and “hydrophobic” front door glass. You wouldn’t think the latter feature to be a big deal, but its ability to shed water was much appreciated during a recent record downpour where the front wipers and clear side windows helped keep me safe on a very busy highway. Still, even the ‘basic’ vehicle offers a lengthy list of standard features that includes power folding and heated side mirrors with signal repeaters, rearview

Especially one with the levels of craftsmanship I found throughout, in its premium leather and abundant soft-touch materials, chrome bezels and polished woodgrain inserts, and in the minute panel gaps that wouldn’t give up the slightest squeak or rattle over rough pavement. Even the din of rush hour traffic barely penetrated the passenger cabin, which was Lexus-quiet. So is there a future for a $37K-plus Kia? You might have asked the same of Toyota and Nissan a few decades ago, now happily selling Avalons and Maximas for about the same money. Fiat pumps up the passenger volume By Lorne Drury Fiat is expanding its footprint in the Canadian market in more ways than one with the introduction of the five-door 2014 500L. One of the beauties of the 500L is the opportunity for customization with dozens of colour combinations, including three roof colours, and funky Euro interior designs.

Two things about the interior strike you immediately when you sit down in the cockpit. First, there’s lots of room, unlike the 500, which feels and is, quite tiny. Also, the amount of light that comes in the greenhouse-like expanse of glass on the 500L makes it an inviting place to be.

Buyers of the 500L Sport get a no-charge Beats premium audio system, while Lounge purchasers get the audio system plus the dual pane sunroof at no charge, a $2,195 incentive.

The 500L has a modern looking interior with two large round gauges front and centre and a strange shaped steering wheel that the Italian designers refer to as a “squircle” because it looks like a square within a circle. It’s hard to describe but to easy to grip.

It’s not a sports car, but it does gobble up corners as we discovered during a drive through winding roads in the countryside south of the city. We drove both a twin clutch automatic Lounge model and after lunch, an entry-level Pop with manual transmission. Both were engaging and fun to drive. The rear hatchback makes for handy loading and unloading and it has a neat grab handle for easy closing. The back seats fold and tumble easily and also have 12 cm of fore and aft travel. Cargo volume is 605 litres with the rear seats upright and 1,268

On the top rung of the trim ladder is the 500L Lounge ($25,995) with leather-face seats, premium vinyl-wrapped instrument panel, power driver and passenger four-way lumbar support, chrome bodyside moulding, six premium speakers, rear park assist and rear back-up camera. Add to that a panoramic dual-pane power sunroof that is a $1,200 option available on all but the base Pop model and you’ll almost feel you’re in an open-air convertible.

The seats are also comfy, although I would prefer a bit more length on the bottom seat cushion for my longer legs. Otherwise, the interior is very nicely finished and quiet on the road, even with the audio system off as my driving partner and I preferred it.
