Mission Park Shopping Centre has been a great fit for the relocation of a longtime Kelowna jewellery store.

Sven Sandberg's Jewellery has been around Kelowna at various locations for more than 20 years.

The family business was started by Sven Sandberg, carrying on a family tradition that dated back to his family in his native homeland, Sweden, since 1796.

Sandberg started up the business 22 years ago at The Grand Hotel development with his wife, son Eric and Eric's daughter.

Prior to moving to West Kelowna in 1980, the family had lived in Vancouver since immigrating to Canada in 1973, contracting out jewellery services to prestigious designers and jewellers.

The business relocated to Bernard Avenue in downtown Kelowna for six years, before moving to Mission Park two months ago.

Today, Eric's parents are out of the business and his daughter lives in Grand Forks, so he is carrying on the family tradition himself.

"I'm very happy with the move," says Eric. "I thought it would take awhile to get reestablished here but as soon as we opened the doors, the people started coming in."

He says that people in the Mission area prefer shopping in their local neighbourhood over going elsewhere because of the time convenience.

"People are so darn busy today between their jobs and running the kids from here to there, they don't have a lot of time for shopping. They want everything close and convenient and easily accessible."

Eric Sandberg is a nationally accredited jeweller in his own right, and both his store and the gemologist on staff, Michael Guretzki, are accredited by the American Gem Society.

"That accreditation is difficult to get as you have to meet several qualifications in order to get it," explains Eric. "To my knowledge there are only six jewellery stores in B.C. that have it, the six Burke's Jewellers stores on the coast, ourselves and another jeweller in Cranbrook."

Eric says Sven Sandberg Jewellery stands for expert advice, service and craftsmanship.

The new store is equipped with a complete repair and fabrication facility, and can deal with customized jewellery requests of any kind and appraisals.

He says while box stores have made it tougher on independent jewellers in recent years, he says the expertise of jewellers like him can be more beneficial to shoppers.

"We are kind of fortunate in our case because we have the capability to manufacture jewellery pieces and do all the repairs and appraisals here. A lot of smaller jewellery stores don't have that ability so it takes longer to get service requests back," Eric says.

"We have the ability to sit down with a customer and come up with a design they exactly want for a ring or other piece of jewellery, and then produce it, whereas in a lot of box stores, you can only select from what is in the showcase at that moment."

Mission Shopping Centre offers many services to shoppers, but one characteristic of its tenants in recent years has been the presence of financial institutions.

The CIBC branch was a fixture at the shopping centre for many years on the Lakeshore Road side, but the bank's presence in the shopping centre was raised a notch when the branch relocated to its current location just off KLO Road about three years ago.

"We relocated from where we were originally in the shopping centre because we found it just wasn't conducive for our customers. Our accessibility is much easier at our new location," said

Holly LaMonica, the branch manager.

"There are other bank branches here as well so it is pretty competitive, but it is what it is."

She said with the move, the CIBC branch has added more teller services and added more financial services.

It was a life-changing decision for Gwen Jenkins and her husband Graeme to take over Mission Cleaners in 2009 from her father.

"My dad used to own this business and he was looking to retire. He asked us if we would consider taking over. I'd already been working with him for several years after we moved here from Scotland. I knew quite a bit about the business and he was confident we should give it a try," recalled Gwen.

"It was Graeme who said, "Come on, you can do it."

Since then Gwen has taken over the daily operations of the business while Graeme continues his behind the scenes work, maintaining the equipment and overall store maintenance.

While Mission Cleaners has been in business for more than 30 years, a longtime fixture in the Mission Park Shopping Centre, since the Jenkins took over the business has undergone a period of

continual growth.

That includes recognition for being voted Best Dry Cleaner/Laundry by a poll of readers for the magazine Okanagan Life for the last two years. "We're obviously doing something right," Gwen said.

That "something" includes offering a myriad of dry cleaning services to its customers—cleaning and preservation of wedding gowns, restoration of many kinds of fabrics; alteration services; cleaning of bedding, sleeping bags and duvet covers;full service for uniforms and shirts cleaned and pressed to the customer's requirements; and a VIP pickup and delivery service.

"We're very prompt with our service and we've been doing it a long time. We know what we're doing," Gwen says.

When Urban Fare opened its first store outside the Lower Mainland at Mission Park Shopping Centre in September of last year, it promised to change our perception of what a grocery shopping experience is all about.

A licensed restaurant with unique offerings, bakery, catering service, a meat department that prepares everything in-store rather than being processed elsewhere, a deli counter with more than 200 cheese options, gift basket and floral services and a number of local food products spotlighted. And since opening, an outdoor patio was created in the spring to help off-set the seating demand for the restaurant.

A year later, store manager Todd Henry says Urban Fare has uncovered some surprises since opening and is continuing to enhance its services and products for customers.

"The first year surprises for us included the popularity of our gift baskets and our floral department has turned out be a real hidden gem for us," Henry said. 'And our catering business has really taken off. We've made a push in that direction as well as even having our chefs going to people's houses and preparing the food on site which is kind of different for people to experience."

In the year ahead, Henry says he wants to focus on the growth of the meat department and the restaurant.

"Our meat department is like having our own in-store butcher shop. Everything you see on display has been prepared by our staff, nothing has been processed elsewhere and shipped to us, and you will see different types of meats that you won't find anywhere else," Henry said.

"And our restaurant has already proven to be popular which led us to create the outdoor patio to accommodate the seating overflow. Its reasonably priced food prepared by our chefs and the portion sizes are second to none for the price that you will find anywhere else."

Henry said the combination of its daily business customer flow boosted by ongoing special marketing promotions has also added a lot of foot traffic to the shopping centre, as Urban Fare has become a magnet to draw other businesses to open at the mall.
