Pumpkins both big and small in the Valley Alberni’s about to become a sea of orange as Halloween nears

P

ort Alberni resident Jake van Kooten is retiring the heavyweight champion of the world—of pumpkin growers, that is.

The good-natured van Kooten grew his last four giant Atlantic pumpkins this year, his last hurrah. Van Kooten is selling his Kitsuksis Road property and settling into retirement.

“I’m going to call it a career. I’ve been to the top and not many can claim that,” van Kooten said. “I’ve got nothing left to prove.

Van Kooten grew a 1,500 pound pumpkin that was named the biggest pumpkin in the world in 2008. “I was world champ for one year at least,” he said.

“The weights are unattainable for me now though so that’s it.”

Three of his last four giant pumpkins are being displayed in Port Alberni, Nanaimo and Campbell River.

The fourth one died before fully growing, he said.

The one locally is being displayed in the pub at the Kingsway Hotel.

Born in Holland in 1942, van Kooten came to Canada in 1952 with his parents, five sisters and four brothers.

The family first lived in Alberta before moving to Port Alberni in 1957.

He remembers his Halloweens as new and fun, he said. “I was a bit of a Lone Ranger though because I went trickor-treating alone and never with a crowd.”

He started growing pumpkins in 1971, “Just to grow jack-o’lanterns for my kids,” he said. He started by growing one plant then over the years added more. “I don’t know how many I’ve grown altogether, let’s just say a whole bunch,” he said.

Van Kooten told his

wife that he wanted to grow a 100-pound pumpkin one day.

Eventually, he grew several 300-pounders.

With his pumpkin horizons ever expanding he became curious about the giant Atlantic pumpkins and contacted the inventor of the Atlantic Giant in Nova Scotia to inquire about it.

He also joined the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers club to learn more about growing the behemoth pumpkins and grew his first one in 1989.

He’s grown four per year since, he said.

Van Kooten has a four-point plan for growing big pumpkins.

One, they need good genetics. Next, they have to be grown in fertile soil. As well, the weather needs to be good between May and October when it grows.

“And you need good luck too,” he said.

Van Kooten may be retiring from pumpkin

growing but he won’t be inactive, he said.

“I’m still going to garden and I’ve taken up lawn bowling. I’m going to do a bit of travelling too.

“It’s time for a different life now.”

Locally, Naesgaard’s farm has had a good growing season, Chris Naesgaard said. “We usually plant a couple of thousand [pumpkins] and harvest several hundred,” he said.

The Mary Street farm market grows small medium and large pumpkins that are used for different purposes, he said.

The pumpkins are popular for fundraising.

Naesgaard’s provides schools and various organizations the opportunity to go harvest pumpkins for a fee. “We donate the proceeds to BC Children’s Hospital,” Naesgaard said.

A bonus on Halloween is that Naesgaard sees himself when he was a kid. “I always

remember watching fireworks on Halloween night at the Lakeshore store,” he said. “I see kids come in with that same sense of excitement over the years.”

Across town at Collins Farm and Arrowvale Campground, Bob and Ann Collins are also getting ready for Halloween. Their theme this year is scarecrows. Last year’s theme was

Alice in Wonderland.

The couple run a haunted hayride through ‘Creepy Hollow’ which they’ve set up on their farm. The event is considered ‘soft’ with no wickedly scary exhibits. The first rides were held last weekend and attracted more than

190 participants, and another will be held Halloween week, Ann Collins said.

“We used to only offer it on one weekend but it got popular so we offer it over two now,” she said.

Collins got the idea for a haunted hayride after visiting

several farms in other communities which had them, she said.

Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer released the report Wednesday, warning that even if a host of technical and security issues can be resolved, there is no consistent evidence that voter turnout would be increased.

Archer asked the B.C. government in 2011 for authority to conduct pilot projects for electronic voting.

new technology by young people, a survey of other results showed middle-aged and older people more likely to use online voting.

The committee recommends that online voting be considered first as an option for people with access restrictions, such as those who vote by mail. It says universal voting should only be be attempted on a province-wide basis for consistency, security and ability to audit results.

No provincial or federal voting has been conducted online in Canada, but municipalities including Halifax and Markham, Ontario have tried it, as well as some U.S. and European jurisdictions.

Archer said online voting has unique challenges, such as the need to verify a person’s identity and then keep that separate from their voting choice. Another issue is how to verify security of a range of computers, tablets and mobile phones that could be subject to software tampering.

RCMP hunt for break in suspect

RCMP Cpl. Jamie Wasylien will be handing out tickets to teens for good behaviour starting this week. The tickets can be redeemed at Parks and Recreation facilities for special admission and rental rates.

POLICE: | Police have stepped up their manhunt for a suspect who stole a rife and ammunition during a break in Beaver Creek.

o arrests have been made even though police have identified a person of interest in a rash of break ins in Beaver Creek.

The person has been identified but not questioned, RCMP Const. Steve Dupuis said. “It’s still early in the investigation yet,” he said.

A rifle and ammunition stolen the weekend of Oct. 18 prompted Port Alberni RCMP to step up their hunt for a suspect.

Police say that a Lugrin Road resident came to the detachment and reported that his Simonov SKS 7.6 rifle and ammunition was stolen from behind his truck in the early morning one day last weekend.

The rifle was kept in a black guitar case

with a blue stripe on it, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

The rifle and ammo theft is the latest in a mini crime spree that has plagued the Pierce Road area of Beaver Creek.

Police report that they are investigating four break-ins and thefts from residences and an RV business in the area.

RCMP members continue going doorto-door on Pierce Road delivering crime prevention information to residents in an effort to stem thefts and catch the person or persons responsible.

Police advised residents to lock and secure their windows and doors at all times whether they are home or not.

As well, residents were encouraged to collect as much information as possible about strange vehicles

Teens get ‘props’ from cops WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Police are cracking down on Port Alberni teens by singling them out and ticketing them for good behaviour.

Port Alberni RCMP kicked off Police Appreciation Community Thanks (PACT) on Monday.

The special program rewards youngsters for behaviour that exhibits qualities such as leadership, kindness, integrity, and good citizenship, an RCMP news release

noted.

Police will be handing out tickets that will contain awards instead of fines.

The awards will be in the form of free admission to a selection of sporting activities such as swimming, ice skating and rollerblading.

Local police teamed up with Port Alberni Parks and Recreation to offer the awards.

“The most important aspects of this program, however, is the positive police to youth contact and the

information contained on the rear of the card,” RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan noted.

The youth will have in their hands a wallet-sized reference card that outlines most of the key youth resources in the community that they can access to receive any assistance needed to help them address any issues they may be experiencing, and/ or the information they need to help them make good, solid decisions about their well being.

atalyst Paper Corp. has donated a working piece of its history to the Industrial Heritage Society.

Officials from the local mill donated a 1963 air compressor to the IHS to replace one that failed last week.

“A new one like this would cost us between $1,300 to $1,500,” mill manager Fred Chinn said.

“This is a way of giving back to the community.”

The compressor will be used at the IHS repair facility at the roundhouse just off of Third Avenue.

“We’ll use it to run the air tools in the repair shop,” said IHS official Ted Mollet,

a retired Catalyst employee who accepted the donation at the mill Tuesday morning.

The compressor was collecting dust on a shelf with other parts in the mill’s spares inventory, Chinn said.

“We had enough that

we could spare it out as a donation,” Chinn said.

The piece may eventually have been used for a fan at the mill but was given to the IHS instead, he added.

the compressor off and tested it before it was donated.

New Alberni District Secondary School principal Nora Moncur doesn’t want to be a gruff, old-school imposing figure in the office.

Build relationships with students and staff first and the rest will fall into place as long as you work at it. This has been the mantra for Nora Moncur, who took over as Alberni District Secondary School principal this year.

Moncur took the principal’s chair at ADSS on Aug. 1, replacing Mike Ruttan, who retired in June.

The principalship at the new high school represents coming full circle for Moncur, who was a vice principal there previously, and a high school graduate from ADSS. “I feel excited but bittersweet at the same time because I built some great relationships while principal at AW Neill,” Moncur said. “But I look forward to doing the same at ADSS now.”

Born and raised in Port Alberni, Moncur

went to the University of Victoria (UVic) after graduating from ADSS in 1982. She already had a career mapped out that followed her dream of being a teacher, and she graduated from the education program in 1987.

“I couldn’t see myself as a principal yet but I always wanted to be a teacher—a high school teacher specifically,” she said.

Moncur returned to the Valley in 1993. She taught at ADSS, the former Mount Klitsa Middle School, AW Neill then returned to ADSS where she worked as the vice principal of Aboriginal education from 20062010.

She served as principal of AW Neill Middle School since 2010, then Ruttan retired and Moncur did some reflecting.

“As much as I enjoyed AW Neill, my heart was at ADSS,” she said.

“You also get a chance to watch kids

grow as they enter high school and leave as adults. Watching that is amazing.”

Moncur applied for the position and in the spring was told by SD 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton that she was the successful candidate.

Going from overseeing 300 students to more than 1.500 was a big jump, Moncur said.

“But I have some great VP’s and staff so it’s a proportional jump,” she said.

Moncur has spent the first two months re-acquainting herself with high school procedures and nuances. But there are also some perks to the job. “The home-ec department always brings me samples of their cooking,” she said. “It’s pie week so I’m getting my fill of lemon meringue, quiche and banana cream pies.”

collaboratively setting goals afterward.

“Relationship building is the centrepiece of human interaction,” she said. “If you don’t have that then it’s difficult to do anything, let alone learn and grow.”

Balancing relationship building with managerial responsibilities is a delicate act. But Moncur thinks back to principals she grew up seeing to know what kind of leader not to be.

“This big imposing figure in the office where you better not end up in. There’s no opportunity to connect with anything that way,” she said.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority posted notices on entrances to the hospital on Oct. 17.

The ban was instituted on Oct. 18 after a hospital employee suffered life-threatening allergic reactions to flowers and plants at the hospital, VIHA communications person Val Wilson said.

“To ensure WCGH is a safe environment for everyone, effective immediately and until further notice, no fresh cut flowers or potted plants will be permitted in patient care areas at WCGH,” a news release

reported.

The ban is in effect until further notice while the employee undergoes further testing for her condition, Wilson said.

Wilson could not say if the employee was new or not, or how long they’ve been afflicted with the condition.

Notices are posted at all entrances of the 52-bed facility. Florists are going to be contacted this week about the matter, Wilson said.

The ban isn’t uncommon. Several VIHA facilities request that flowers and plants with strong scents not be brought in, usually during Easter, because of others with allergies.

E

mployment and economic development are behind the Hupacasath First Nation’s purchase of a portable sawmill.

The mill is set up and in operation at the tribe’s hall off of Beaver Creek Road.

The small operation employs three tribe members and one trainer, Hupacasath chief councillor Steven Tatoosh

said.

Purchasing the mill has been in the works for more than a year but production problems delayed construction of the equipment.

The $90,000 mill was purchased from D & L Timber in Lac La Hache. The project was underwritten with a combination of revenue from the tribe’s woodlot and a grant from the Nuuchah-nulth Economic Development Corporation, Tatoosh said.

Fir wood that was cleared on the plot of land the mill sits on. The operation will use wood from the Hupacasath’s woodlot and from other areas where they are contracted, he said.

The tribe intends to use money it received from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to build benches and picnic tables that commemorate residential school survivors out of wood milled at the operation, he said.

Some private contractors have already inquired about getting special orders for custom cut wood.

“We have to work on the training, branding and marketing first but there’s a niche market out there,” Tatoosh said.

Inlet needs cohesive plan Province’s oil spill study misinterpreted More and more focus is turning to the Alberni Inlet for economic and recreational opportunities.

The Port Alberni Port Authority has plans for a trans-shipment hub at the mouth of the Inlet. There is talk about a liquid natural gas (LNG) pipeline and shipping facility. Raven Coal and coal shipments from Port Alberni are not completely off the table yet, and two mining resource companies are looking at starting a mine at Nahmint.

Closer to civilization, there is already a wellestablished sawmill on the banks of the Inlet courtesy of Coulson’s, there are log sorts, tugboat businesses, a fish processing vessel and more commercial marine businesses.

The development of Canal Beach, downwind of APD Sawmill, is sure to increase recreational use of the Inlet from windsurfers, kayakers, sailors and others.

The new Centennial Pier holds promise for more cruise ship visits and maybe even float plane service.

With all this interest and activity, it is time for a cohesive plan on what we want business down the Inlet to look like, and how we are going to protect the marine and shore environments, as well as First Nations land interests.

The port authority on Thursday will announce a partnership with a First Nation as it embarks on a feasibility study of the trans-shipment hub, which is a good start.

But will it be enough?

There is currently a Waterfront North study underway, examining future development along the Somass River. That study will be useless if something further down the Inlet goes terribly wrong.

ICTORIA – The release of the B.C. government’s detailed study into oil spill response capability off the West Coast created the usual brief wave of media shock and horror.

This just in! If crude oil spilled in the Dixon Entrance, the stormtossed sea lane north of Haida Gwaii, the combined resources of Canadian and U.S. containment and collection response could only recover an estimated four per cent of it. And that’s in the summer!

The winter recovery rate would be more like three per cent.

Talk radio and website headlines set the narrative in minutes. How could anyone even consider running oil tankers through that pristine B.C. coastal area? It’s crazy!

Here’s the big fact clearly stated in the study by U.S.-based Nuka Research

and Planning Group, and ignored by most of the media and public. There are hundreds of tankers filled with crude oil sailing through these stormy seas every year. It’s been going on since Alaska North Slope crude was developed in the 1970s.

Six of the seven oil spill simulations run by Nuka are based on Alaska crude, because that’s overwhelmingly what has been shipped along B.C.’s North Coast for 40 years.

This lack of crude oil spill response capability has existed the entire time, without a whisper of protest or media attention, even after the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster near the oil’s point of origin.

The current narrative, hammered home by U.S.controlled environmental groups and their aboriginal partners in the “Great Bear Rainforest,” is that only Canadian oil is a threat.

How much Alaska crude is shipped down the B.C. coast? According to Nuka’s analysis, it’s currently about 38 million cubic metres each year.

That’s enough to fill B.C. Place stadium to the roof – 15 times.

The Sierra-GreenpeaceForestEthics-Dogwood gang, a sort of billionairebankrolled green Team America, has worked hard to promote the falsehood that “tar sands” oil is vastly worse than that nice fairtrade Alaska stuff. Their claims about acidity and abrasiveness of diluted bitumen didn’t hold up, and it’s still hotly contested whether the heavy oil in diluted bitumen would float, emulsify or sink in actual sea conditions.

by the Green Party as a secret scheme to prop up Enbridge’s pipeline proposal. So it’s a scandal when you don’t know the answers, and it’s a scandal when you try to find them.

Another question that gets little attention is whether it’s better for spilled oil to sink rather than wash up on beaches.

Crude oil is, if you’ll pardon the expression, organic. Spills produce a huge spike in oileating bacteria that leads to an increase in fish populations at a certain stage. This was documented in a 1994 book called Degrees of Disaster, written by an expert who stayed on in Valdez for four years, long after the TV cameras and grandstanding politicians went home.

Victoria-based Dogwood seized on a 2012 Nuka study done for the Haisla Nation at Kitimat, which found that in ocean conditions that are present more than half of the time, there would be no immediate way to respond to a spill at sea.

Re: Heating and landscaping issues plague new school, Oct. 17.

Problems with the HVAC systems and landscaping at the new ADSS highlight the fact that, in some respects, the facility is second-rate.

One recent graduate told me that the band program is going downhill, and that the new band room is far too small—unlike the band room at the old ADSS which had room for offices and storage space and could comfortably accommodate a large orchestra. Moreover, it was recently built and is in excellent shape.

I personally helped promote its construction and was successful.

However, my efforts to preserve it and the old auditorium failed.

Dennett Bryson raised one million dollars from the community in the 1950s for the 1,000-seat facility, the largest north of Victoria.

In every sense it was a community facility and hosted wellknown speakers such as Stephen Lewis and top-rated Canadian

entertainers such as Andre Philippe Gagnon, Rita MacNeil, Moe Koffman, Michelle Wright, Loreena Mckennitt, Liona Boyd, and the Vancouver Symphony.

Those days are gone, perhaps in part because the stars demand more money, but also because the new 500-seat auditorium is far too small to be economical. It can’t even accommodate the entire school population.

Even if the old auditorium required new heating, why this community would abandon a facility that would cost $15-18 million to build today is beyond me.

It’s now obvious that this community is in love with the secondrate whatever the social and economic costs.

Fence sitting must hurt To the Editor,

Re: Science loses ground to superstition, BC Views, I, like Jim Knock of Esquimalt, was pleased to read Tom Fletcher’s Oct. 3 column. Having someone point out that science is losing

out to superstition never happens as often as it should.

I was at least disappointed though, when Mr. Fletcher parked himself firmly on the fence rather than picking the side of science, despite providing some evidence of the ongoing climate scare scam.

It seems he’s not really concerned with the price, in both dollars from our wallets and curtailed economic activity, the BC Liberal’s carbon tax policy has on this province.

I have no idea if ‘Crunchy Christie’ suffers from the same brain disorder her predecessor ‘Green Gordo’ did, or if she is more political opportunist—possibly she’s some of both.

Honesty being the most scarce attribute coming out of that unused stone building in Victoria, we’re hardly likely to ever find out.

And that is where I’m almost angry with Mr. Fletcher. I’ll quote one paragraph from James Delingpole in the Oct. 15 UK, The Telegraph: “Let me just say as I argued here the other week, there is more than enough solid evidence now

to demonstrate to any neutral party prepared to cast half an eye over it that the doomsday prognostications the warmist establishment has been trying to frighten us with these last two decades are a nonsense. The manmade global warming scare story has not a shred of scientific credibility.

“It’s over. And while I don’t expect the alarmists to admit this any time soon, I do think the rest of us should stop indulging them in their poisonous fantasy.”

BC could sure use a columnist with some back-bone.

As to Mr. Knock’s zombie E&N rant, great stuff.

Re: Science loses ground to superstition, B.C. Views, Oct. 3.

Tom Fletcher is, in my view, one of B.C.’s most under-appreciated commentators. This column sums up one of our world’s strangest phenomena —superstition increases in lockstep with the increase in human knowledge.

Fletcher focuses on our endless climatechange conflict, but you can add debates such as ‘smart meters causing cancer,’ ‘vaccines causing autism,’ ‘genetic engineering bad/ organic good’ and on and on. Toss in the anti-coal and anti-pipeline crowd, and you have a mass of ignorance that boggles the mind.

Never have so many known so little about basic mathematics, physics, chemistry, history and so forth.

To illustrate my point, consider that the Earth’s atmosphere is 77 per cent nitrogen and 21 per cent oxygen. That leaves two per cent for all the trace gases including carbon dioxide – currently .04 of one per cent.

How can a reasonable person argue that carbon dioxide is the primary driver of climate change?

Fletcher also notes the genetic engineering (GE) debate at the UBCM convention. GE offers some of the best solutions to hunger. In spite of the potential benefits, nearly half of our municipal leaders buy into the anti-GE hysteria.

As Christians we are often inclined to close our eyes to injustice. Like the priest and the Levite in the parable of the good Samaritan we sometimes cross the road rather than get involved. James 3:14 tells us What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? There is no doubt that alone we can’t undo some of the terrible things that go on around us. However, small things can bring about changes - like reminding someone who is obviously fit and full of vigor that the handicapped space at the supermarket is for those who need them. Yes, we possibly will get verbal abuse but perhaps that person might think again next time of those who really need the space and park two spots over. If we are to be the hands, eyes, ears and voice of God on earth than we have to put ourselves into the action.

Remember that God does not rely on one person alone he sends us helpers. We all have skills we can use. God will stretch, challenge and mould us. So instead of crossing the road to injustice take a stand you might be surprised that others will cross the road with you.

Dogs on display at Glenwood DOG SHOW: | Annual competition draws hundreds from all over for the Alberni Valley Kennel Club’s 49th consecutive event.

he 49th annual Championship Dog Show wrapped up at Glenwood Centre on Oct. 20 following three days of competition.

More than 200 dog per day were exhibited and judged according to breed standards.

Each day of the show, dogs compete for Best of Breed.

They go on to compete for the Best in Group (There are seven groups: sporting, working, herding, non-sporting, terriers, hounds and toys).

The best in each group are then judged to declare “Best in Show”. Here are top dogs from each show.

The future is electric AMSTERDAM – BMW has joined the race for the electric car dollar.

On the evidence of two days driving the funky-looking all-electric i3 through the narrow streets of old Amsterdam and alongside the picturesque canals of rural Holland, the German manufacturer may have a winner.

For starters, it is simply great fun to drive. The lithium-ion battery, encased in an aluminum cage below the five-seater cabin, provides enough instant zap to the electric motor to propel the car smoothly to 100 klicks in less than eight seconds. Left the stopwatch

at home, but counting “one-and-two etc.” to count seconds, my lips barely mouthed “six” before the speedo leapt from 80 to 120 km/h while passing.

Fusion cooking: Big value in mid-size car ‘‘

The 2010 Fusion is an all-wheel drive with impressive fuel consumption and new optional safety features.

Amid lingering global nancial turmoil, recession recovery was already in high-gear at Ford, with an over a 40 per cent year-over-year sales gain that made Ford the top-selling automaker in Canada, in 2009. It was also the year it launched an all-new 2010 model year version of its popular mid-sized family car the Ford Fusion.

The 2010 Fusion was offered in SE and SEL trim levels with a choice of a 2.5-litre I4 or a 3.0-litre V6 engines and a 3.5-litre V6 powered an all-new Fusion Sport model with all-wheel-drive. Ford also introduced its rst hybrid edi�on of Fusion with an Atkinson cycle version of the 2.5-litre engine and an electronically controlled con�nuously variable transmission (e-CVT).

The hybrid’s ba�ery is a nickel-metal hydride type that’s smaller and lighter than compe�tors and it’s temperature is controlled by air extracted from the passenger cabin. Claimed city/highway fuel consump�on is a very impressive 4.6/5.4 L/100km.

Fuel consump�on ra�ngs for the other Fusion engines are as follows; 9.4/6.4 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 2.5-litre; 11.1/7.3 (city/highway) for the 3.0-litre V6 models; and 12.7/8.3 (city/highway) for the 3.5-litre with all-wheel drive.

A new op�onal safety feature on the 2010 Fusion (well worth having) was a Blind Spot system that comes with Cross Traffic Alert, which was a unique to Ford system. Radar sensors in the rear side quar-

ter panels can detect a moving object within a 20 metre (65-�) range on either side. Great to have when vision is restricted (as it o�en is) when backing out of a parking stall.

This genera�on is also a quieter Fusion. Changes to reduce cabin noise levels include an acous�c windshield, thicker front-door glass, new hood insulators, addi�onal sound deadening in the trunk and a new headliner in the cabin that’s made with an absorp�on material. An air lter that removes respiratory irritants and toxins from entering the cabin was also a new standard feature of Fusion.

A new standard innova�on was a fuel ller system called EasyFuel. Not only does it eliminate the need to remove a gas cap when lling up, it reduces evapora�ve emissions. You simply push the fuel-pump nozzle into a gas tank receptacle and it automa�cally seals shut when removed.

Six standard airbags helped the Fusion a�ain a top ve-star crash-test ra�ng. If an air bag is deployed, Fusion also has a unique emergency alert system that ashes the hazard warning lights and sounds the horn, to a�ract a�en�on. An electronic stability-control system with a brake-ac�vated trac�on control system was a new standard safety feature.

The MyKey security system was made a standard feature on the 2011 Fusion, a spo�er mirror, to help eliminate blind spots, was incorporated in the door mirrors and the SE edi�on got standard automa�c

headlights. No signicant changes were made for 2012.

Good reliability, owner sa�sfac�on and low cost of repair ra�ngs helped the 2012 Ford Fusion get a “Recommend” ra�ng from Consumer Reports. Ford Fusion buyers also benet from having a good supply of them on the market and used prices tend to be reasonable. A poten�ally great value pre-owned purchase.

Family steps up to help Rollin with fundraiser MELISSA MARTIN Arts Around

The Community Arts Council, sponsored by Capitol Theatre and the Kurucz family, will be holding a concert fundraiser on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre.

After five years of playing at the Teas on the Terrace, the Travelers—all members of the Kurucz family—will perform their first theatre concert to benefit the Rollin Art Centre.

Expect a special tribute to Remembrance Day at the beginning of the concert, then stroll down memory lane with an interactive, sing-along afternoon with the likes of Peter, Paul and Mary, Eddy Arnold, Harry Belafonte, Anne Murray, John Denver, Journey, The Bee Gees and more.

The Travelers— Paul, Tatyanna and Jairynn Kurucz—are known for putting a folk twist to both old and new songs.

Joining the Kurucz family will be Katelyn Perry, a bright, up-and-coming performer from the Comox Valley.

“It was largely driven by the reconstruction of the curatorial and work areas in back,” museum director Jamie Morton said.

“We have a lot of our three-dimensional artifacts out but not so much of the art.”

The exhibit gives the museum the opportunity to bring out some of the artwork previously stored in the back and give the public a chance to view it.

The art collection comprises more than 400 pieces, so it was difficult to choose which ones to include in the exhibit, curator Kirsten Smith said.

There are also some exhibits of equipment used to create art, such as linocuts and the actual paint box from artist Guy Roberts.

The exhibit, which has been going up this week, has already generated some interest, Morton said. editor@albernivalleynews.com
