About this section...
Perhaps the Tri-Cities’ best feature is the proximity to forest trails, rivers and the ocean. It would be hard to pick one favourite spot and favourite activity, there are so many: STRANDBERG I love to cycle through the cool shade of Mundy Park on a hot summer’s night, dip my toe in the ocean at Belcarra Regional Park, walk the dike along the Pitt River at the end of Dominion Avenue and tramp through the trees at Minnekhada Regional Park. At harvest time, I like to snoop around the community garden and enjoy the open fields of Colony Farm Regional Park and walk the dike under the Mary Hill Bypass to view the Fraser River. My favourite place to take guests is Rocky Point Park, where the view is spectacular and you can get a handmade ice cream cone at Rocky Point Ice Cream. The thing I like best about the Tri-Cities is the way each city is so distinct: There’s Coquitlam’s growing urban centre, Port Coquitlam’s traditional, yet renewing, downtown and Port Moody’s blend of old and new with Moody Centre and Suter Brook. Serenity & inspiration • What’s your favourite outdoor thing to do in the Tri-Cities, and why? I enjoy the peace and serenity I feel from walking the labyrinth in the Crossroads Healing Garden at Pioneer Park in Port Moody. The silent walk and the inspiration from the engraved stones remind me of what is important in life. • Where in the Tri-Cities would you take a friend from out of town, and why? I love taking out-of-town guests for a walk along the Coquitlam River.The beauty of nature and the sounds of the river as it flows toward the ocean fill me with a deep appreciation of where I live. It’s amazing that this incredible natural experience is here within our city. It’s like a little secret I get to share with close friends.

• What’s your favourite outdoor thing to do in the Tri-Cities, and why? The Tri-Cities offer a myriad of options for indoor and outdoor activities. My favourite outdoor things HUNT to do in the Tri-Cities are to run or cycle the many dikes and trails. I think we have, without a doubt, one of the most diverse and beautiful natural surroundings found anywhere in the Lower Mainland. The area offers beautiful trails, rivers, lakes, oceans, mountains and much, much more.You can either enjoy a challenging workout or just walk and wonder at the beauty that surrounds this area of Metro Vancouver. This, of course, does not include our beautiful golf courses, which I also enjoy playing, or at least trying to play.

Boathouse Restaurant in Port Moody. A highlight this past summer was docking the boat at the pier, going to the Boathouse for dinner and then carrying on up to Belcarra Bay for an evening on the water and, yes, we even managed to catch some crab for lunch the following day. • What do you like best about the TriCities?
What I like best is how the Tri-Cities come together as a community, that we treat each other with respect and take pride in the diversity of our municipalities, our business communities and our natural surroundings. Sailing or kayaking at Rocky Point — it’s such a beautiful place and getting out on the water on a nice CLAY day, enjoying all that our natural surroundings offer us is a peaceful activity that really allows you to appreciate how much we have been given. • Where in the Tri-Cities would you take a friend from out of town, and why? A day in and around Rocky Point, of course! A run or bike around the Shoreline Trail, take in a Summer Sundays concert at Rocky Point Park, kayak or stand-up paddle board, dinner at the Boathouse (or Pajos) and cap it off with a Rocky Point Ice Cream and a moonlit walk on the pier.

Great place to bike, eat • What’s your favourite outdoor thing to do in the Tri-Cities, and why? I’m an avid cyclist — road and mountain bikes — so my hometown of Coquitlam is the starting point for DAL MONTE many a skinny-tire journey for my riding buddies and me through Port Coquitlam and points east or Port Moody and points west. I also enjoy cross-country fat-tire jaunts on trails to and along the Coquitlam and Pitt Rivers.

The farmers’ markets in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody are always great destinations. But I like to eat, so I would likely take out-of-towners for great sushi, outstanding Chinese or likemama-made-it Italian. • What do you like best about the TriCities? What I like best is my neighbourhood. We know all the people on our street and it is a distinct pleasure to take the dog for a walk on a sunny — OK, I’ll settle for dry — day and stop to chat with our awesome neighbours along the way. • What’s your favourite outdoor thing to do in the Tri-Cities, and why? We love to bike along the Traboulay PoCo Trail, the Pitt River dikes, Coquitlam River trails and the Shoreline Trail in Port Moody.

If the weather is good, then Rocky Point Park in Port Moody, Crystal Falls along the Coquitlam River or anywhere along the PoCo Trail. If the weather is less conducive, then to restaurants and cafes that I know give back to the community: Pasta Polo, Mr. Mike’s, Saint St. Grill and many others.
