Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest
2013 A-List Our A-List feature is here again and it’s bigger and more popular than ever! We received a record number of responses to our poll this year, and herein we will present the results of our online voting. We hope that the A-List will serve as a guide to our communities, a resource that can be used to help you find some people, places and businesses that you might otherwise have overlooked. We don’t mean to say that one is better than another – only that in the minds of our readers these choices deserved mention. The categories are listed alphabetically and some categories may have four favourites as we had a tie in votes. Once again, Colleen Flanagan, our award winning photojournalist will share a few of her favourite images of local subjects. Colleen’s work has been recognized as some of the best our industry has to offer anywhere in North America, and she continues to win awards for the quality and creativity of her work. Reporters Phil Melnychuk, Monisha Martins, Neil Corbett and Editor, Michael Hall will share some of their favourite stories from the past year, as well.
Special thanks to our advertising and creative services teams for communicating with those chosen, and for creating and laying out a special section that we hope you will find engaging, informative and easy to read as a keepsake. At the risk of sounding repetitive year after year, one of my favourite things about Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is the giving spirit of the people who live here. The success of the Rotary Duck Race and the Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit the Friends in Need Food Bank, the kindness that is evident at events like Community Living Month and the Wes Durksen Memorial Golf Tournament and the generosity of participants in the Founders Cup and Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation’s Fund Run all contribute to the richness of life in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. And while we’re helping others, we’re not afraid to have fun. Witness the recent Rotary Oktoberfest event, the Caribbean Festival and the variety of entertainment presented at the ACT over the season, and it’s easy to see why we are the envy of communities around the province.
So, please read on and enjoy the 2013 News A-List, and thank you to those who cast their votes for their favourites. We couldn’t do this without you! Jim Coulter Publisher Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News

The community buzz, chatting with old and new friends alike is always enjoyable, as well. Another favourite thing of mine about our community is the access to the great outdoors, whether it is a walk on the dikes, and Kanaka Creek Regional Park. A hike to the lower falls at Gold Creek is always refreshing.

Some of my favourite things to do in Maple Ridge include, walking to the farmer's market on Saturday during the market season in Memorial Peace Park. The produce and products are fresh and tasty, and that goes without saying.

My A-list By Deb Walters, Pitt Meadows Mayor
Pitt Meadows holds a special place in my heart. My favourite memory of living here is from many years ago, when I first moved to this community, and I ventured out with my family to our very first Pitt Meadows Day. We didn’t know anyone, but by the end of the day, we had so much fun and met so many friendly people we knew we had found a community to call home.

I’m sure my experience is not unique.
Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters
I hear from people all the time that they love Pitt Meadows because of the small-town feel and that it is a safe and welcoming community to raise young families. Great friendships are born and wonderful memories are made here.
Community events aren’t the only 'A-List' feature about Pitt Meadows. I often like to say that this city is blessed with a small-town feel that people find comfortable and familiar, yet we enjoy amenities that larger metropolitan areas do. You can pick up fresh products from local farms, enjoy a bike ride or walk along the dike trails or meet friends for coffee in Osprey Village. But we are also well connected to surrounding areas with the Golden Ears and Pitt River bridges and West Coast Express for quick access into Vancouver, and the Pitt Meadows Airport for traveling further afield. We also pride ourselves on smart development and a friendly and safe atmosphere. Many residents love living here because of affordable housing for their families, and the ability to live close to nature and green spaces. We work hard to make it possible for Pitt Meadows residents to commute to work easily, or to find work opportunities close to home, so that this community can offer a quality of life not found anywhere else. I encourage you to explore Pitt Meadows and find many more A-List features about living here.

I love the Sunday night jam at the Billy Miner Pub. Maple Ridge has a ton of talented musicians, and this jam reflects that perfectly. The setting in this old historic building, which has become a popular ale house and restaurant, is located where our community began, right next to the Port Haney Wharf. Moonrise or sunset on the wharf is something to see. I love Memorial Peace Park. Whether I'm standing with my son at the Remembrance Day events or strolling through the Haney Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning, this is such a wonderful place to hang out. I also love the many great restaurants in our community. My favourites: Pho Xuan Chi (No. 46) on Lougheed Highway, west of 223 Street; the GM Restaurant (butter chicken is awesome) at Lougheed Hwy. and 207 Street; and the Big Feast (eggs benny and the vegan smore); on 227 Street at 119 Avenue; the pies at the Home Restaurant on Lougheed Highway, east of 216 Street, are "epic," as my son says.

Finally, two last things: I love a walk in Kanaka Creek Regional Park and a stroll along the dikes any time of year, with the Golden Ears mountains canvas that changes year round – the snow, the clouds and the sunlight make it slightly different every day.

Recognizing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows’ Finest
It's good to be here By Michael Hall, Editor Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows News
I've lived in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows since 1989, so my A-list of things I like most about the community grows every year. Just recently I discovered the horse trails atop 264th Street on Thornhill and find them a challenging and scenic break from the sidewalks I usually run on around town. Much thanks go the trail builders – the Haney Horsemen. I also enjoy running on the dikes at the end of 224th Street, overlooking the berry fields, and in particular the Docksteader portion. I've rediscovered parts of the Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest, as well, as my family hikes and jogs its trails. I've always enjoyed hiking the Incline Trail at Mike Lake, but only rediscovered Menzies Trail this past summer while mountain biking with my daughter. Pretty challenging stuff.
I am also a fan of the Golden Ears track club, because those who run it know what they are doing and treat the athletes right. I can't say thanks enough. Dave Semper, as well as the other basketball coaches at MRSS, are first class, as well. Another favourite thing of mine – my neighborhood, located in the eastern portion of Maple Ridge, for the safety and friends it has afforded my family. The streets are never quiet. Folks walk and chat, cut each other's lawns. The kids play endless games of hockey and build forts. Sometimes they pool their money and just order pizza, or they walk up to 7-Eleven for Slurpees. On weekends, when the weather is nice – and we are not at the rink – we walk up to Cooper's and get what we need, and buy a coffee for the way back.
We also like the riverfront trail in South Bonson, and those in Cliff Falls park never get old. I still think Dingo Del along the South Alouette River is a hidden gem, and a great place to go tubing in summer – far less busy than Hot Rocks, and from where you can get to along the water in about 30 minutes. Other than places to exercise, I've found a few new haunts, such as the Gyro Restaurant on Lougheed Highway in downtown Maple Ridge. The older couple who run it make the bread right in front of you, and she'll dice you up chunks of jalapeño. As my kids have grown older, they've changed schools, so it is sad to drive by Kanaka Creek elementary now and know they are no longer there. But at the same time, they love their high schools, Garibaldi and Maple Ridge secondary. Of course, I am a fan of both.

We are a proud part of the community and happy to support our Jumpstart program and many other charities and community groups. ps.
With this natural beauty all around us, in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge you can find Randy Kamp, MP almost unlimited opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. I know I love my walks on the dikes with my basset hound and I enjoy the serenity that comes from strolling by the Fraser River in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. And I love taking my many grandchildren to the spray parks at Harris Road Park and Maple Ridge Park. But our area has more than just natural beauty – it has community-minded residents who volunteer their time and resources because they care about keeping Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge a great place to live.

Penny no longer makes sense – 02/01/13
Ministry elk strays from Upper Pitt – 01/09/13
The last Canadian penny was printed earlier this year, and in February businesses stopped accepted them. We surely don't miss them.
First a Maple Ridge couple hiking near Blaney Bog stumbled upon a Roosevelt elk – a herd of 23 of them were introduced to the Upper Pitt Lake region by the Ministry of Environment in January 2005 to repopulate the area with native species. Then in the summer, a pair of such elk were photographed along Lougheed Highway by Kanaka Creek. After that, nightly residents walked or parked in the area, trying to catch a glimpse of the elk, wiped out of the region by hunters at the turn of the 20th Century. We'd like to keep them around this time. But remember, people shouldn't approach elk – they can be dangerous.
Assault victim gets new car – 02/13/13 A teenage girl who was abducted from a Maple Ridge mall parking lot, and escaped from her attacker, was given a free car by Maple Ridge Chrysler. Publicity or not, it was a classy move.
Out with the old, in with the new – 02/22/13 After some initial concern, and 26 years in the same location, the Haney Bakery and its happy face cookies found a new home in Haney Place Mall.
Opening and closing the store – 01/11/12 Zellers, the anchor tenant at Haney Place Mall since it opened in 1978, closed in January. Renovations for the new Target store started right after, and now the U.S. retailer is set to open just before Christmas. Soon to follow – Club16, the gym owned and operated by Vancouver Canuck great Trevor Linden Club 16 is coming Trevor Linden, downtown on Dewdney to Maple Ridge Trunk Road. Renovations of the old library building are ongoing and scheduled to be completed for opening in January. Just another positive sign for the redeveloping downtown core.
Not joking about hated HST – 03/29/13 The Harmonized Sales Tax ceased at the end of March, and the PST and GST tax model was reinstated. We haven't heard much about that since.
Tears shed over school budget cuts – 04/12/13 Some trustees on the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board actually cried while announcing $5.6 million in budget cuts this past April. Now, after the CUPE contract has been settled, the provincial government is asking them to find another $500,000 in cuts, this year and next. Continued on page 23

Maple Ridge sues ex-mayor – 05/10/13
FAMILY & COSMETIC DENTISTRY
The District of Maple Ridge is suing former mayor Gordy Robson for operating a charitable golf course on property in violation of current zoning.
'It was all about the economy' – 05/17/13 Liberal candidates Doug Bing and Marc Dalton swept the local ridings in the provincial election, and their party was returned to government – a shock to many in the province, considering the B.C. NDP led by as many as 20 points in the polls leading up to the big night. The Liberals credited their strategy – to focus on the economy. Many in the NDP blamed leader Adrian Dix for running a poor campaign that was too positive. He later resigned as party leader.
Flying high in wake of tragedy – 06/12/13 When Amos Topping arrived at high school, he couldn't read. In June, he graduated from Westview secondary, finding a home in the trades. He even made his own guitar.
Thank you for your loyalty and support.
When he went to the podium at his graduation ceremony, the crowd cheered. He received the Spirit Eagle Award for overcoming adversity, as well as the Aboriginal Achievement Award. Eleven years earlier, Amos' lost two sisters in a house fire.

All-boys K class not so different – 06/26/13
Pitt Meadows loses community champion – 07/31/13
A kindergarten class of just 16 boys at Davie Jones elementary surprised educators, who thought they would be loud and hyper, and so scheduled an extra "run around" outside each day. Rather, as it turned out, the class of boys was calm and attentive, playing with Lego and construction toys, and drawing.
Sandy Wakeling, a respected community volunteer and political organizer, passed away from a rare stomach cancer after several years battling it.
They acted "exactly like your typical kindergarten class."
A large swath of farmland along Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows was removed from the provincial agricultural reserve.
Learning words – not Angry Birds – 07/10/13
At the same time, two applications to remove from the reserve farmland in the Albion flats of Maple Ridge, also along the highway, were rejected.
The local school board employed iPad Touches and iPad Minis to teach kids to read as part of the iPod Literacy Project, with unheard of success. Almost every one of the 19 students in the class met reading expectations, which is "not normal."
Pitt Meadows is now moving ahead with plans for the 33 hectares in the North Lougheed Corridor, while Maple Ridge is negotiated a land swap with mall developer SmartCentres to make another application.
Cup riot charges sought against Ridge hockey fighter – 07/24/13

Former councillor poses solution to marijuana question – 08/28/13
A former junior hockey player from Maple Ridge was the latest person charged in connection with the 2010 Stanley Cup riot.
Former Maple Ridge councillor Craig Speirs, in leading Sensible B.C.'s efforts to force a provincial referendum on legalizing marijuana, admits he smokes the drug on occasion.
Daniel Scott Amesbury is a former member of the Ridge Meadows Flames, a junior B team with which he had 368 penalty minutes in 45 games during the 2009-10 season.
Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters also admitted she tried marijuana, once as a teen.
Ridge fire chief leaving after 30 years.
Pitt to try budget with zero tax increase – 07/26/13 Pitt Meadows will present a budget for 2014 with no residential tax increase, placating a pair of seniors who started a petition to pressure the city to curb spending.
Peter Grootendorst, one of the Maple Ridge fire departments two chiefs, announces he is leaving for a job with the Justice Institute. The District of Maple Ridge is reviewing whether to replace him or have just one chief. Continued on pg 25

By Lindy Sisson, Executive Director The ACT & MRPM Arts Council
It's been a stellar 10 years for the Arts Centre Theatre in Maple Ridge. We just put together a 10-year statistics sheet to look at the impact The ACT has had on the community, I am happy to report that our "ACT presents" series this season had its highest attendance yet at more than 13,500 patrons – up by 40 per cent. And total attendance at rental presentations was 28,000 – and that's just ticketed events. Lindy Sisson

So it was a stellar 10th anniversary for the theatre.
The Arts Council operates the art gallery and arts programs throughout the community, with participation nearing 10,000. So all those people are are enjoying all aspects of the arts – each with a story to tell. The arts impacts the quality of our lives in many ways and to demonstrate this, each year the arts council works with various community groups. We had two very successful partnerships last year: Earth Arts Day, with the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society; and the presentation of Women in Fish, with the Katzie First Nations, which allowed access to their long houses, where they also created a fishing history museum.
Mike Hicks

We also presented our second CRE8 Youth Day, and I’d have to say my highlight of the year was the enthusiasm of the youth who participated and relished this opportunity to get together and participate in various arts workshops and explore the possibilities of their creativity with industry professionals.

1) Maple Ridge Burrards (WLA) Fans of lacrosse will find that Maple Ridge is home to a Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) franchise in the Burrards, who play the game at an elite level.

People who are new to the game will find a sport that offers the hard-hitting, intense play that is typical of a hockey or football game, combined with the finesse and scoring chances of a basketball game.

The Burrards took a big step forward in 2013. Early in the year, they were the talk of the circuit for their improved play. Their roster boasts Curtis 'Superman' Dickson, known for the way he launches himself across the goal mouth as he shoots, and who led the league in scoring last year. With new off-floor leadership, and with the youngest team in the WLA getting a year older, they hope to contend for the Mann Cup in the near future, if not this season. If you've never seen WLA lacrosse live, you owe it to yourself catch a Sunday night game at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. It's fast, it's violent, and it's a great time.
Thanks to Joni for 13 great years and welcome to Kim who joins Val and Terra.

2) Marauders and Titans (varsity football) For the first time this year, the district has a crosstown rivalry in varsity high school football. The Samuel Robertson Technical (SRT) Titans have been developing players through the Grade 8 and junior football ranks, and this year for the first time they have jumped into senior, Double A football. The Pitt Meadows Marauders have been polishing their high school program over seven seasons, and are indeed set to Maraud their way into the post season this year. The culture of Friday night lights has come to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District this fall, and the games have attracted large crowds of students, parents, alumni and football fans. Games are free to attend at the Pitt Meadows Community Sports Field, and at SRT's gridiron, but the bleachers fill up quick, so be sure to get there early. Games kick off on Friday nights at 7:30 p.m.
...and we will continue to for the years to come. THANK YOU for voting us on to the A List!

A quick look at the Ridge Meadows Flames alumni is proof of that. Brandon Yip of the Nashville Predators once wore a Flames jersey, as did Brad Hunt, Kellan Tochkin and Prab Rai, all who signed contracts with the Vancouver Canucks.
Former Flames Landry Dorsett, and Cody Campbell have each gone on to play NCAA hockey for U.S. universities. This season, the Flames are poised to rebound from last year's forgettable campaign with a host of new young talent, each hoping to take the next step closer to pro hockey. • The Ridge Meadows Flames play every Friday night at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge at 7:30 p.m.

Recently, the local club has seen a number of former players move up to junior A and major junior, with Mike Piluso, Mackenzie Skapski, and Eric Williams each going on to play in the WHL, while Jordan Soquila, Carter Shinkaruk, and Todd Fletcher went on to play in the BCHL.

Our municipal parks and recreation system is first class. We are fortunate to have Golden Ears Provincial Park right on our doorstep, one of the busiest in the provincial park system.
We have many outstanding golf courses in the area, which not only provide great recreational opportunities for area residents, but employment opportunities as well. In addition to attracting tourists, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows also attract artists. There are more than 100 artists living in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Many of them have their studios open to the public. There is no question that this area provides something for everyone.

Like most people, I love the lifestyle of living in an urban area surrounded by beauty, tranquility and open space. Within a matter of minutes from Doug Bing, MLA Pitt Meadows downtown you can be going for a run, Maple Ridge walk or bike ride along the dikes. With a bit more time, you can paddle a canoe or kayak at Whonnock Lake, or go for an invigorating hike through the Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest. Dinner
I love the scenic farmland and being able to buy at our outstanding farmer’s market, and at delightful food specialty shops such as Hopcott Specialty Meats, Bruce’s Market and Golden Ears Cheeseworks.

On the drama front, Thomas Haney Secondary's adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 couldn’t be more prescient in the age of WikiLeaks and NSA surveillance. It was a timely reminder to appreciate the rights and freedoms we have in Canada. For visual arts, you don't have to look further than the Maple Ridge Art Gallery, a space that always features unique and diverse exhibits. My A-List By Sandy Macdougall
What I like about Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows is that, despite a steady growth in population, our communities have retained a folksy small-town atmosphere, which reflects old fashioned values. It’s almost like the television show Cheers, where everyone knows your name.
Caring about Caregivers.
There are few communities with a population nearing 100,000 residents where you can walk down the street and recognize many of the folks you will encounter, but that’s the case here.

Advocacy for Caregivers
Deciding to make the move into long term care can be confusing and stressful. We will provide you with information to help you navigate the seniors health care system.
Caregivers often find themselves in situations where they need to advocate for their senior. We offer advice for people who need to advocate for seniors on behalf of the family or employed clients.

THE NEWS
I’ve lived in this area for more than 60 years and I still enjoy the friendship and company of people who were my classmates years ago. My own children grew up here and their children have followed suit. I even have great-grandchildren attending school at Hammond elementary. It all combines to create a sense of familiarity and permanence. This area is also blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, bounded by the Fraser and Pitt rivers, Pitt Lake and Golden Ears park, as well as many other features. And so many of us share a passion for retaining the values and esthetics that have made our communities such a great place to live. We moved away from Maple Ridge for a few years, but never felt at home until we returned. It now seems highly unlikely that we will ever leave again. Despite ongoing urban development in some parts of our communities, we are still left with less dense rural areas where you can still live the same quiet country lifestyle which originally attracted us.
Thank you

I remember arriving in Maple Ridge back in 1983. Growing up in a very small town in the Interior, I thought I’d arrived in the big city.

I had no family here and set out to make friends. It was heading into fall and I was shopping at the new Coquitlam Centre and saw the local curling club had a sign-up table in the middle of the mall. I had curled all through high school and thought this would be a perfect way to meet people. I spoke to the manager at the table and when I said Maple Ridge, he said you have to call Dale Longmuir. I went home and did just that. Dale invited me to come down and he introduced me to pretty much everyone there. I joined a couple of leagues and some of my best friends today are because Dale took the time to invite a new kid to the club. Terry Becker
Delivery & Pick Up
There were many times when weekend after weekend was spent at a bonspiel. I’ll never forget that the club and its members were incredibly supportive of our team when we headed off to Ottawa and the Scott Tournament of Hearts as rookies back in 1990. The Golden Ears Winter Club, it’s members and many volunteers will always hold a special place in my heart.

Work goes on changing the city scape: My A-list By Phil Melnychuk, Reporter at The News
Don't leave town for any period of time, because when you come back, Maple Ridge won't be quite the same. This past year, construction crews have been busy gutting and renovating the old Zellers store in Haney Place Mall, preparing for the opening of Target.
Clowns, face painting, music, scavenger hunt, games, emergency vehicles.
Most of that work is now complete. The heavy equipment has been moved off site, the construction fences have been taken down and only the grocery carts need to be delivered for the store's opening this fall.
Information on:
Healthy living, children, youth & senior resources, nutrition strategies, personal safety, addictions, staying fit, tips for parents, living with disabilities And so much more!
Despite critics who love to pile on downtown, I think the place has potential.

The naysayers say that nothing is really happening downtown and that we won't see any changes for decades.
I say it's already happening. With the opening of the Thrifty Foods store last year, Haney Place Mall has seen a complete refurbishment at both ends with new parking lot construction on both the south and west sides of the mall.

Proud to be serving the community for over 21 years
Continued from pg 38 Lougheed Highway, after the District of Maple Ridge used the construction of the new Chances Maple Ridge community gaming centre as a kickstart to rebuilding Lougheed Highway from 226th to 228th Street. That work is now complete, as well. The road has new pavement, some sidewalks have been replaced and an intersection has been created at 227th Street and Lougheed Highway, offering a new connection between the downtown and the Haney bypass.

Chances Maple Ridge opens its doors officially with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m., on Oct. 23. The project combines the new 200-seat bingo centre with the new road along with environmental improvements.

If that approval is granted, the District of Maple Ridge's long-awaited plan for Albion flats will start to unfold. That plan envisages business park, shopping and recreational development on that side of the Albion flats, fulfilling a long-time wish from some residents for new shopping opportunities. That proposition is a 50-50 one, with possibly both good and bad outcomes. The district isn't done yet however. While its incentive program for downtown Maple Ridge has expired after kickstarting construction of hundreds of new condo residences in the core area, the district is now preparing a similar incentive plan to attract more commercial development to the town centre.
t
More changes could be coming soon to the eastern portion of Maple Ridge. The Agricultural Land Commission has previously said it would support removing land east of 105th Avenue and Lougheed Highway from the agricultural reserve.
