Town captures 4 Blooms The BC Communities in Bloom 2013 awards ceremony took place in Kamloops over the weekend, and Cache Creek committee members were thrilled to receive four out of five blooms.

The ceremony took place at the Sun Rivers with about 75 people from across BC in attendance.

“We didn’t expect to win,” said chair of the CiB committee Carmen Ranta, “but we were hoping to do better than last year’s three blooms.”

Which they did.

“We still have some work to be done in Cache Creek,” she said.

“The evaluation [provided by the judges] will help guide that work.

We’re showing steady improvement.

She said the town lost marks for Tidiness - especially for residential properties. Another low area was for Water Conservation.

“We need to get more people

on board for next year,” said Ranta.

“The committee has a few ideas for future projects, but we need volunteers. Our goal is five blooms, but we can’t do it without the support of everyone.”

She said the committee was very happy to receive the provincial award for Landscaped Areas, sponsored by Urban Systems.

“I believe that largely is for the Gateway (Cariboo Sam) Park, and also for the excellent planning for parks, and the way the Village is looking at the future.

Ranta attended the ceremony with her husband, Mayor Ranta, and committee members Councillor Lisa Dafoe, and Susan Graham, the Village’s landscaper.

This year’s provincial participants included Barriere, Logan Lake, Salmo, Lake Country, Kent, Merritt, Hope, Salmon Arm, Silverton, Sooke and Cache Creek.

Black Press/ - It may soon fall to the province to decide whether Metro Vancouver can ban the export of garbage beyond its boundaries, putting what some say is an unfair limit on business.

A proposed waste flow bylaw that’s been fought by garbage haulers was swiftly approved

by Metro’s zero waste committee Oct. 3 and is expected to get support from the full board Friday, sending it to the provincial environment ministry for approval.

The committee vote was 6-2 in favour, with West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith and Langley City Coun. Gayle Martin opposed.

The bylaw would ban shipments to unapproved out-of-region destinations, such as an Abbotsford transfer station that is capturing a growing share of the waste business.

Some haulers pay an estimated $70 per tonne to dump there, rather than $107 per tonne charged by Metro Vancouver at in-region trans-

Worksite death

Oct. 2 at 6:50 am RCMP were called to a logging worksite on Battle Creek Forestry Service Road on Hwy 1 east of Cache Creek by a man who had arrived at work only to find his coworker dead in an onsite camper trailer.

David K. Stark, Jr., 33 of Kamloops, had stayed in the camper overnight so that he could start work early the following morning.

No foul play is suspected, but police are investigating the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning, along with the BC Safety Authority and the Coroner’s Office.

A bottle of beer and a bottle of Jack Daniels were seized and poured out. The youth were co-operative and went on their way after a warning from the officer about their behaviour.

Oct. 6 at 8:30 pm police were advised of a single vehicle accident involving a Honda Civic and a deer on Hwy 1 near Ashcroft Ranch.

The car was disabled in the accident, but the driver, a 20 year old Salmon Arm man, was uninjured.

Police were called to another deerrelated accident the following night, Oct. 7 at 8 pm, on Hwy 1 near Cache Creek. Again, the 23 year old Ashcroft man was uninjured but his GMC pickup truck had to be towed. In both cases, the deer were killed.

Hunting in town

Oct. 4 at 1:30 pm police received a report of a man hunting with a shotgun within the boundaries of Ashcroft near the CN tracks on Evans Rd. The man was located driving down the road into town. He admitted to hunting birds along the tracks and said he had received permission from the CN in Winnipeg, but he didn’t realize he was within Ashcroft’s municipal boundaries. The 68 year old Vancouver man as given a warning.

Customers forced to pay more fer stations, and they don’t face Metro-imposed bans on dumping various recyclables.

Their ability to undercut other haulers that pay full Metro tipping fees and abide by the bans are resulting in a growing flow of garbage east that Metro directors say must be stopped so the regional district isn’t bled of critical revenue.

“Waste is leaving the system and that means we’re not achieving our environmental goals, our diversion goals and we’re losing revenue to support Metro Vancouver programs,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, who chairs the waste committee.

Some business groups have denounced the bylaw as one that will force customers to pay more than necessary.

Their objections have been amplified by paid lobbyists – including former BC Liberal MLA John Les (Chilliwack), who represents the Cache Creek landfill operators – as well as some Metro directors.

“I don’t think Metro Vancouver should be creating a monopoly on something like garbage,” Smith said Friday, arguing the region shouldn’t frustrate free enterprise or business creativity in finding new waste solutions.

“Metro Vancouver continues on a crash course to raise costs for residents and businesses alike,” Grant Hankins, district manager for hauling firm BFI Canada, told the committee. “You’re picking winners and losers.”

An earlier version of the bylaw was defeated in September but it was quickly retooled and revived.

One change would allow cities to exempt specific apartment buildings from the requirement coming in 2015 to separate all organic food waste.

Garbage from those buildings would have to go to an approved material recovery facility (MRF) where organics and other recyclables would be extracted from waste.

The bylaw creates some room for mixedwaste MRFs, which proponents say could pull out much more recyclable material that’s now dumped or incinerated, helping lift the poor 15 per cent recycling rate in multifamily buildings.

Exempting select older apartment buildings from the organics ban will also solve a major problem for cities, which weren’t sure how it could be implemented in some cases.

Metro has been accused of trying to pen up garbage in the region to feed a future new garbage incinerator.

But the bylaw is also backed by recycling businesses that say they have flourished under Metro’s source separation policies, which would be undermined without the imposition of flow control rules.

“If all this material was being exported or if all this material was being owned by haulers who have transfer stations we would never have access to this material,” said Nicole Stefenelli of the Recycle First Coalition.

The Cache Creek landfill would continue to be an approved regional facility under the new rules, at least until Metro opens a new waste-to-energy plant and stops using the Interior dump. Some incineration opponents hope that plan fails and Metro is forced to keep trucking waste to Cache Creek.

A great weekend is coming up at The Riv Pub in downtown Ashcroft. On Friday, Oct. 18, the Tiki Lounge returns featuring, Ashcroft’s own - Spiritus Mundii. Building a railroad through dangerous land

by Esther Darlington MacDonald When it came time to map the survey route for Canada’s first national railroad, the C.P.R., surveyors and suppliers met their most formidable challenge when they entered British Columbia. For sheer rugged wilderness geography, the country’s western-most Province would present problems the planners behind their desks back in Ottawa couldn’t even imagine.

For one thing, in 1871, so little was known about the B.C. Interior. The mountain ranges, the valleys, rivers and lakes that lay between these mountain ranges were one deep, dark mystery. A

mystery that only experience would unveil. And that experience would be fraught with misery for the men surveying the route, and for the pack animals that they needed to bring in their supplies.

It was a case of ignorance of the land and of the climate in every segment of the route.

And, as it turned out, even the advice of those who did know the land where the routes were to be built wasn’t good enough for the “experts” from Ottawa.

Losing weight is a combination of good habits How many times have you told yourself: “I’m going to lose weight!”?

Maybe you even started on some sort of weight loss program. Depending on your motivation and level of commitment, you may have found success but often we make a gallant effort at the newest weight loss program and then quit when the bathroom scale doesn’t agree with how hard we’ve worked.

It’s discouraging when we try really hard to eat well and exercise regularly and the scale just doesn’t reward us.

Let me back up a bit though and take a reality check. Sometimes we “say” we’re working hard when in reality we are missing the mark. If you aren’t finding yourself breathless and sweating, then you probably are not exercising. As well, if you are not eating at least three balanced meals (according to the Canada Food Guide) every day, then you are not eating well.

In the last few years I’ve heard from a number of weight loss seekers who are frustrated at their lack of progress.

“I am eating healthy food regularly including a nutritious breakfast and I’m exercising vigorously five times a week, but I’ve barely lost a pound!”

This is discouraging to say the least.

So, scale weight aside it’s still worth it, but let’s look at the problem of the dreaded scale anyway.

So you’re exercising (the kind that makes your heart pump and your body sweat) and you’re eating balanced meals at regular intervals (including breakfast). But what else are you doing each day?

Here are six tips for your continued health and when practiced in conjunction with regular exercise and good eating, should put that scale at a healthy weight.

day.) Cleaning, gardening, walking, woodworking, etc.

Prevent Kitchen Fires focus of Fire Prevention Week The national Fire Prevention Week program this year focuses on raising awareness of the fire hazards in the kitchen – stove top safety, kids in the kitchen and burn awareness. But remember, always check for two ways out of every room and primed and ready smoke alarms in the home.

Home Fire Escape Plans Create a home fire escape plan showing two ways out of every room. Practise your plan with your entire family by having a home fire drill at least twice a year.

Choose a Family Meeting Place a safe distance away from your home. All family members should be taught to report to the family meeting place after leaving the home.

One person should then go to a neighbour’s house or the nearest phone in a safe location to contact 9-1-1 or your local emergency number.

Smoke Alarms Make sure everyone in your home can recognise the sound of the smoke alarm and knows exactly what to do when it sounds.

Install working smoke alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of your home. For maximum protection also install smoke alarms in bedrooms.

Smoke alarms should be tested and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Alarms should be tested once a month by pushing the test button and listening for the alarm.

For battery operated smoke alarms, replace batteries at least once a year or for extended life batteries according to manufacturer’s instructions. Batteries should also be replaced when the smoke alarm makes a chirping sound.

Smoke alarms should be cleaned at least every six months, by gently vacuuming the exterior.

Smoke alarms do wear out and should be replaced at least every 10 years.

When your smoke alarm has expired, do not throw it in the garbage; take it to a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarm recycle depot.

Thunder of dreams

A couple of nights ago, in the wee hours of the morning, the loudest clap of thunder I’ve ever heard in my life startled me awake. I sat upright, my heart beating quickly, and my immediate vision was of a plane crashing in the back yard, shaking the house

upon impact.

I then saw some lightning outside the window, and heard another thunderclap - slightly less potent this time. Phew. It was just a storm.

Following that were another few bolts of lightning and thunderous clashes, each one a little

more distant than the first. And then I lay there, with a ton of thoughts racing through my mind.

Eventually I fell back asleep and these thoughts turned into brilliant ideas and started to build on one another until it felt like I was watching an amazing movie inside my own head.

“This is so good,” I remember thinking to myself.

And after one of the many times I woke up, I sent an email to my illustrator, Jim Hunt, before I forgot.

He lives on the east coast and is a few hours ahead of me in time, so I wanted to request that he change my cartoon for this week’s column so that I could write about the storm that inspired the blockbuster inside my brain.

I continued to have a choppy sleep after that, waking up periodically from the sound of the torren-

When I finally got up at 7 a.m., I checked my emails and saw that Jim responded to me and agreed to change the cartoon to one that would reflect my inspired thoughts from the night before.

I was delighted.

There was only one problem: I couldn’t remember any of them.

How could that be, when they seemed so pronounced and powerful just hours earlier?

For the rest of the day, I hoped that some of those visions would bubble back up to the surface. I’d sit and close my eyes,

Dreaming “brilliance” and then forgetting it completely has happened most of my life.

For a time, I kept a pen and paper by my nightstand and if I woke up in the middle of a dream I’d quickly try to write it down before it vanished out of my head. Inevitably, as I was writing, the visions and thoughts would begin to evaporate. But sometimes I’d record some nuggets of gold before it was too late.

And other times, I wouldn’t be able to read my chicken scratch the next morning well enough

to decide if what I recorded was indeed brilliant or bad.

Once I’ve forgotten those elusive unconscious thoughts, they’re usually gone for good – so I don’t expect to remember my dreams the night of the storm.

But I have set up my pen and paper on the nightstand for the next time I wake up excited about something that I want to retain.

Hopefully this time the powers of Mother Nature have nothing to do with it.

Weed control just doesn’t get any more environmentally friendly than having goats eat the noxious weeds while leaving the ‘good’ stuff behind.

A herd of over 200 goats has been patrolling the fields, hills and roadsides around Clinton for the past couple of weeks.

Conrad and Donna Lindblom of Beaverlodge, Alberta own the herd.

The Lindbloms started Rocky Ridge Vegetation Control in 2002 after years as cattle ranchers.

Originally the goats were used to clear vegetation around young pine and spruce trees that had been planted after areas were logged. This reduced the time and cost of keeping vegetation down while the newly planted trees became established. There was also much less environmental impact than using pesticides.

The business expanded to include weed control for noxious weeds, as goats will pass up lush grasses to eat woody stemmed, leafed plants instead.

This includes Canada thistle, knapweed, tansy and toad flax.

A railroad at great cost snows would be heavy and deep. He realized his train of pack horses would not be able to make it through to Tete Jaune Cache.

But Mahood was under considerable pressure from the Director, Selwyn, to meet Mahood at Tete Jaune Cache, where they would rendevous and plan the next moves. For Mahood, delay meant trouble with his boss. Pressed to continue, the reluctant Barnes, insisted that the government guarantee any losses that he would suffer if they should be snowed in. Mahood, knowing his report was expected by Selwyn at Tete Jaune Cache, telegraphed Ottawa, and asked for Barnes to be compensated for any losses it was almost certain he would sustain. Authority was given and Barnes, and his pack train plowed ahead.

From Barkerville, the party went by way of Bear lake and Willow River to the Fraser. But snow had begun to fall so heavily, that three feet of it had fallen in one night, stopping the survey crew and the pack train in its C.P.R. from p. 6

tracks. Freezing temperatures added to the torture. It was imperative that the party must get out of the territory, or they would be locked in for the winter. The pack animals were abandoned. They were turned loose to fend for themselves. The survey crew and Barnes made their way out by snowshoes. All the horses perished.

It took some time, but John C. Barnes and William Brink were eventually compensated for their loss. The deal was $150 for each head. That was a lot of money in those days.

Selwyn, meanwhile, made his way to Kamloops by pack train, but he faired no better than Mahood had done. He failed to find Mahood at their planned rendevous site at Tete Jaune Cache, and he, too, had to abandon his horses. He continued to Kamloops by canoe. His men had made four canoes. Two of them were lost, probably in the rapids.

It was delays such as this one that prolonged the building of Canada’s first national railroad. The C.P.R.

With works in acrylic, watercolour, oil, oil pastel, hand painted photo, scratch art, mixed media, soft pastel, photos, photo art and clay there were so many excellent entries to view.

In addition to the art work displayed there were a number of artisans on hand with a variety of items. Dirk Broeder displayed his beautiful, detailed leather work and also demonstrated the techniques he uses to create them. Karla Cummins had posters, cards, fridge magnets and more available to purchase. Tracy Fallstrom also had gift cards, magnets, and more available.

Kristine Hendry (Longhorn Rope Creations) had a fascinating variety of home décor items made or accented with Clinton from p. 15

used lariat rope. These included picture frames, water fountains, bowls, baskets, lamps, wreaths, clocks, and much more.

Sandy Reed sold woodwork clocks, puzzles, etc. while Melva Saunders had greeting cards and Raku pottery for sale.

Ann Trembath had a table full of her unique jewellery pieces.

Nancy McMinn gave demonstrations in clay sculpture while Mark Coe demonstrated his detailed wood carving techniques.

Many of the David Stoddart School students had art work on display. If these pieces are any indication, the art show will continue on into the next generation.

There is lots of young talent in Clinton.

There were also displays of some of the projects and awards of the 4-H group: Earl Cahill had a display of old hand drawn pictures; the Bonaparte Band had a

display of Regalia and bead work, and Mark Coe displayed some of his carved firearms, knives, cups and more. The detail in his carved birds is unbelievable!

There was also a silent auction of donated items to help raise funds for the group. Several Clinton businesses and some individuals donated items for this.

Kudos to the artists and artisans who took part, the organizers, the students who helped out, those who donated to the silent auction and to everyone who came out to support our local artists and artisans. It is great to see so much talent in one room.
