Self-taught guitarmaker in it ‘cause he loves it never follows a particular guide when making his guitars, just a folded cardboard cutout of the body he uses as a rough shape.

“I just start from a three-quarter-inch thick piece of wood and draw the shape of the guitar. The neck isn’t too difficult. I stain it, then put it together. I finish with some Varathane.

“If I worked steady, I could probably make one a month, but I usually make about one a year. They are make strictly from local wood … the body is made of maple and the top is spruce,” he added. “I’m always hoping to make the next one sounds a little bit better. I’m always improving.”

Ernie Zerkee’s wood shop is well-stocked with wood and tools, while the body of a guitar lies face up on a well-used towel, waiting for a neck to be carefully attached.

His signature and date are barely visible in black felt marker through the sound hole, but the varnished body is ready for a musician’s grip.

“I have heard a few good things said about them. One guitarist said they’re alright — they’re easy to play. But I’ve never put a value on them; I only make them when people ask for it,” explained the nonagenarian over a coffee in his kitchen.

Zerkee is a selftaught luthier — guitar maker — but modestly added he can “play a little” but gives away many of the instruments he makes.

Kyle Kimball has spent his third season Kyle Kimball on the pier working the concession and enjoys the social aspect of fishing. The concession will have it windup on October 15th.

This year 28 fish were registered and many fish were lost and the stories will continue. Yurek Lewcluk got the big Tyee 45 lbs., Al Webber caught 2 Tyee, 31 & 32.5 lbs. Jack Hemskirk got the first one of the year on July 12th.

The majority of tourists have gone but each day many visit the pier and experience the culture that exists each day. I had a chance to speak with Larry Ganton who was visiting his brother Ken Ganton from Campbell River.

This is it was a good year for n nto Ga Larry & Ken saltwater anglers who were in pursuit of salmon and many went away with fish and a great fishing experience in Campbell River. Painters Lodge will be closed for the season October 13th.

The fishing social event for the month of October is the Brown’s Bay 12 Annual Fishing Derby, October 18th - 20th. Last year the largest chum came in at 17 pounds.

This time of the year the Upper Campbell can fish very well for trout. The Campbell, Oyster and Quinsam Rivers will get a lot of attention as the Coho start to run and water conditions improve with the recent rain. Beach fishing for Coho will start to pick up along Salmon Point south to the Oyster River.
