City staff arranged meetings with the Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Galloway Lumber and Canfor.

The visit also included tours of the Tembec finger-jointing plant in Cranbrook, the Galloway Lumber mill and Canfor’s Elko mill.

Transportation options to get product to the west coast ports for export to China were a major concern for the Jiangsu Wuyang Group delegation. City staff is working with the Jiangsu Wuyang Group’s Vancouver-based advisors to provide additional information as a result of the meetings with our local forest product manufacturers.

Prior to the departure of Chairman Yang’s team Mayor Stetski hosted a dinner for the delegation at St. Eugene’s Resort. Joining the Mayor for the dinner was Mr. Jim Connelly, Chair of the City’s Economic Development Committee.

“Jiangsu Wuyang Group’s visit is a direct result of the city-to-city friendly relationship Cranbrook established in February 2012 with the port city of Taicang, China,” says Wayne Stetski, Mayor of Cranbrook. “More work will be needed to see if this new potential opportunity can become a reality for our local wood suppliers but this is a positive first step.”

The Highway 3/95 Revitalization Committee is a select committee of Council established under section 142 of the Community Charter. or family member has run the risk of having a dangerous fire. As Fire Prevention Coordinator of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, I often talk to people about the ways they can stay safe in their homes.

Too often, we have that talk after they’ve suffered a damaging fire.

It’s my hope that people reading this letter won’t have to learn the hard way. You must always pay attention when cooking.

Why? Because cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Statistics from across Canada show that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home-fire injuries.

Fire Prevention Week is October 6-12th and this year’s theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”

The theme reminds us that leaving cooking unattended and other unsafe kitchen practices are a recipe for disaster.

Often when we’re called to a cooking-related fire, the residents tell us they only left the kitchen for a few minutes. Sadly, that’s all it takes for a dangerous fire to start. The bottom line is that there’s really no safe period of time for the cook to step away from a hot stove.

A few key points to remember: Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the room even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.

When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.

Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles (e.g. potholders, towels, rags, drapes and food packaging).

The British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters (BCPFF) conducted a half day fire ground operations orientation (Fire Ops 101) for elected public officials, Administrators or MLA’s.

This event was held at the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Training Center during the recent Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention.

Talking business

by Brian Coombs We are lucky to be living here.

We are the sunniest city in the province, the wilderness is right out our back doors and business is booming— well, sort of.

At the recent Chamber of Commerce business gathering, Mayor Wayne Stetski extolled the virtues of living in the city, which included an optimistic look at the city’s economy.

“The number one way our economy grows is through the retention and expansion of existing businesses—your businesses. Your mayor, your councillors, your city staff and your Chamber of Commerce are all working hard to make this city a better place,” said the Mayor, concluding his speech.

But speaking with businesses in the city, the rosy picture tends to take on a paler hue.

There are complaints about taxation and the help they receive from the city in regards to expansion and getting more profit from their business.

So a look at the city’s Economic Development Strategy 2010 2014 seemed in order to determine what the city’s goals are and where it has gone to achieve them. Here are the objectives outlined in the “Commercial Business Attraction and Retention” section: • Higher commercial occupancies • Diversified retail and service options • More active, vibrant downtown • Retention of existing commercial enterprise mix According to BC Stats, construction is

up in the city, general merchandise stores are doing better, educational and health services are employing more people and the arts are contributing more to the economy.

As for the downtown core, it has seen an incredible change for the better, (at least in terms of looks) over the past few years.

In regards to the retention, and expansion of existing businesses, there is something in place.

In a recent talk with Mayor Wayne Stetski, he said that the city now has a tax exemption bylaw for the downtown core in regards to expansion or changing the look of the business. This bylaw would provide some tax relief for the businesses that do work to improve the building for a period of five years. This is a good program for downtown business, but not so great if you run your business somewhere other than the city’s core.

When it comes to new industrial lands, Stetski pointed out that there is no new land available, but that the city is working for an airport industrial zone and there could be some opportunities as Tembec sells off some of its property in the city.

The recent delegation from China, from the Jiangsu Wuyang Group, sparked another idea for future growth.

That group is looking for lumber and CP Rail requires a large amount of volume before allowing track use. He suggested that the city could look seriously at establishing or finding a business person to build a loading fa-

cility for containers to be shipped to the coast. Of course, that same facility could be used to unload goods headed to this area. If that plan also worked in conjunction with local mills, it would definitely provide employment. The local finishing is extremely important. After all, this province does not need to export more raw logs.

But the real hard question lies in attracting businesses to the area. Stetski believes that having a more beautiful city, with a thriving arts and culture component will help in attracting these entrepreneurs and in particular he is looking to Calgary and Vancouver.

That is a tough row to hoe however. Businesses in Vancouver have access to international shipping, infrastructure and a city already steeped in culture. In regards to Calgary, the tax incentives and corporate culture could make moving to Cranbrook a hard sell.

So the struggle to improve the economy here in Cranbrook continues. Currently, the city is working on a new Economic Development Strategy. Whether or not the city’s beautification projects, or hosting delegations from China will help is yet to be seen.

It is comforting however, to know that business is on the radar for the people we elected to city council.

Selkirk Signs and Services happily supported Western Financial Place and Kootenay Ice by donating a wrap for the new zamboni. With Shivers, the Kootenay Ice mascot, featured on the front, the new zam-

boni adds some pizzazz to the ice!

Although well-versed in wraps, a zamboni was a first for Selkirk Signs. It posed some challenges with all the bends and corners, but the end result is impressive. Selkirk Signs’ Sales Manager Jeana McDonald said “it’s great that we were able to take on a new en-

deavour and support our local hockey team.”

Zambonis have become an iconic part of Canadian culture. Since being invented in the 40’s, audiences have been fascinated watching the zamboni dress the ice. The group working to restore the small brick Water/Electrical building behind City Hall is making some progress. Willie Kappler has donated a whole truck load of heritage Cranbrook bricks to be used in infilling. Plans are being drawn up to start a fundraising drive to cover materials and expert assistance.

Now the group is looking for more history on the building. Do you have stories? Have you ever worked in the building? Do you have photos of the building through time?

We are working on an updated Facebook page so that the public can

track the work. Those who use Facebook might consider “Liking” the Facebook page ‘Save the Cranbrook City’s Waterworks and Electrical Department Building.’ This give updates on the project’s progress.

As well, we have started designing an interpretive sign to be placed near the building. We would be happy to interview anyone with memories of the building or working within it. As well, anyone loaning photos to the project will get them back promptly. We just need to scan them at a high resolution so that we can use them both in

Even at an older age, literacy as a skill is important and fulfilling Black Press and the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy are collecting donations for the 3rd Annual Reach a Reader! By making a donation to this campaign, you are supporting literacy programs in your community. Thank you for making the difference.

The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is the Columbia Basin and Boundary region not-for-profit literacy organization. CBAL programs support seniors, adults, families, youth and children of all ages improve English, reading, writing, numeracy, computer and workplace skills.

In Cranbrook, family literacy programs aim to provide parents and caregivers with the skills needed to support their children’s literacy development.

Since their inception CBAL has been managing the two StrongStart Centres at Amy Woodland Elementary School and Steeples Elementary School on behalf of the School District. PALS is

for all parents with children in Kindergarten to Grade 2. This is a free, fun, information-packed series of evenings with dinner included and the whole family is invited to attend. This program is new and we are pleased to partner with Paq`mi Nuq`yuk Early Learning Years and the Aboriginal Education program at Mt Baker High school.

Now in its 5th year, the Young Parents Education Program (YPEP) is a program for parents who have not completed Gr.12 and have preschool aged children.

In partnership with the College of the Rockies and others such as the Infant Development Program, Paq`mi Nuq`yuk and Bellies to Babies the YPEP program provides academic instruction along with parenting, life and work skills for the parents and a quality children`s program on-site for the children. YPEP accepts continuous intake and is free!

As well, CBAL offers a number of adult

literacy programs that provide adult learners with the tools and skills needed to be successful in the modern world.

We provide Seniors and Adult computer lessons throughout the year in partnership with the Cranbrook Public Library as well as Joseph Creek Village.

New programs this year include Autobiographical Writing for seniors, a series of poetry workshops and financial literacy programs for youth and for the general public.

We provide one-to-one literacy tutoring for adults. CBAL also provides English as Another Language instruction and literacy or essential skills tutoring. All of our programs are free!

Antibiotic overuse Since the discovery of antibiotics decades ago we have come to rely on their use to treat a wide variety of infections and disease. The appropriate use of antibiotics has saved many lives while their overuse has killed many. According to the CDC, which is continuing to sound the alarm bells about the overuse of antibiotics, a common issue with antibiotics is that they are mistakenly prescribed for viral infections or given when a person is sick just to be safe when it is not clear that the infection is bacterial. Antibiotics are overused “by lazy doctors who are trying to kill a fly with an automatic weapon,” according to pharmacological epidemiologist Mahyar Etiman in a New York Times article.

Equally often, a person will have some underlying dietary or lifestyle issue that predisposes them to infection and rather than correcting the cause of the chronic infections, antibiotics are abused. Either way, long term, frequent or overuse of antibiotics can be deadly as they kill the beneficial bacte-

ria that naturally grow in our bowel. Common side effects from antibiotics include diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, cramping, fatigue, and nausea.

One way to help promote a healthy microbial environment in your gut is to use a strain of yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii. This microbe was first discovered when French scientist Henry Boulard noticed natives of Southeast Asia chewing on Lychee and Mangosteen to help control the symptoms of Cholera. This type of yeast promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and I use it frequently to help people suffering from irritable bowel, antibiotic induced diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic bacterial infections like Clostridium difficile, E. coli and Salmonella. If you go shopping over the counter for Saccharomyces, or any probiotic for that matter, be sure to choose a refridgerated supplement that explicitly states on the bottle that the number of viable colony forming units is guaranteed through the expiration date.

Eye Health Some simple tips for healthy eyes Your eyes are your window to the world and we often take eye health for granted.

Here are three things you can do at home to preserve your vision and protect your eyes.

Avoid “screen squint”. Staring at a computer or TV screen for hours on end is stressful for eye muscles. Set your monitor at eye level and facing away from any light sources to minimize reflections on the screen. Take regular “eyeball breaks” from screen work, changing your focus to another object farther away every few minutes.

Obituaries OBITUARY

MILDRED NEARING (1925-2013) It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Mildred Nearing passed away peacefully on September 27, 2013 at the glorious age of 88 years.

Millie was born on February 14, 1925 in Natal, B.C. to proud parents, Phillip and Elizabeth Musil.

Along with her seven siblings, she was raised to appreciate the rewards of hard work, responsibility and the love and laughter of a happy home.

Millie grew into a lovely and graceful young lady who drew the attentions of many suitors. One fine young gentleman won her heart, Clarence Nearing, and they pledged their love in marriage on September 15, 1951 in Calgary, Alberta.

They were further blessed with a family of their own and though times were often challenging, Millie was an inspiration and strength that allowed them to persevere.

Millie had many talents and abilities: she loved milking the cows, working on the farm, cooking and keeping the house.

She enjoyed working at various jobs when she was young like for the dentist Dr. Campbell, Joe Gaal’s Dry Goods Store and at the Tourist Texaco in Fort Macleod. When the kids were grown, she started cleaning businesses such as Kaiser Resources, the banks, the doctor’s office and later the Canadian Custom’s Office at Rykerts near Creston, B.C.. She enjoyed dancing, socializing, board games and darts. Her generosity and kindness were evident in her cooking and caring for family and friends. Her positive attitude and charismatic humour will never be forgotten and she will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

“You only live once, but if you live right, once is enough.”

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life include her loving children, Gordon (Bev) Nearing of Sparwood, Shelley (Tilio) Porco of Calgary, Teresa (Mike) Rosler of Sparwood and Chad (Michelle) Nearing of Sparwood; her precious grandchildren, Jamie (Jeremy Rodd) Reid, Nicolas Porco, Miranda (Gene) Olsen, Teddi-Jo (Ryland Bowen) Rosler, Stevie (Josh Prince) Rosler and Liam Rosler; her cherished great grandchildren, Kaylee Reid, Tatum Bowen-Rosler and Lux Prince; and her numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Leroy Nearing; her father, Phillip Musil; her mother, Elizabeth Musil (nee: Fristel); her grandchild, Debbie Nearing; and her siblings, Millie Kotek, Fred Musil, Joe Musil, Stan Musil, Mary Hark, Len Musil and Phil Musil.

The funeral service honouring Millie’s life was held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 11:00 am at Fantin's Funeral Chapel in Blairmore (13461-20th Ave).

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of the late Mildred Nearing may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, Box 359, Bellevue, AB T0K 0C0. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.

A great family sedan that still appeals to the rebel in us all Overall: Dodge’s mid-size sedan is a clone of the Chrysler 200 for space and power choices, but carries a bit of Charger swagger in its design; nothing significantly new here, but expect an Alfa Romeo-based replacement to arrive soon.

Drivetrain: The base four-cylinder basically

carries over (although there’s an optional sixspeed automatic transmission); the 3.6-litre V6 is up nearly 50 horsepower over the outgoing 3.5.

If you’ve convinced yourself that one of Chrysler’s mid-size sedans are within your budget, you now get to choose whether the

slightly plainer but cleaner-looking Chrysler 200 or the Dodge Avenger’s Chargerinfluenced looks is the sedan you can live with. The fact that both cars are priced about the same and offer the same footprint and power teams won’t make your selection any easier. As with

the 200, the Avenger’s overhauled interior that was introduced for the 2011 model year is much more passenger-friendly and eye-pleasing (fewer square shapes/grids and more metal-look plastic trim), with softtouch materials and warm ambient lighting. Dodge claims that

With stylish looks reminiscent of the iconic Charger, the Avenger is actually a family sedan that doesn’t sacrifice speed or handling. the cabin is one of the quietest in the segment, thanks to a plethora of sound deadening “treatments”. At the same time, the Avenger’s stance was lowered, the track width (the distance between the left and right tires) widened and most of the suspension bushings changed out to improve ride and road holding qualities.

The exterior, which has remained mostly unaltered since the Avenger’s 2008 re-launch, was treated to a more aggressive nose and rear deck. Not so new is the base 173-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission.

Fast, stylish and surprisingly affordable, the Koup is for drivers Overall: A few years into the current design, the Koup isn’t missing two doors as much as it’s adding driving fun over the sedan and fivedoor.

Drivetrain: The same four-cylinder engines and six-speed transmissions that are available in the Forte sedan and hatch.

For many people, taking away two doors cuts into a vehicle’s practical nature, but in the

case of the Kia Koup, it’s tuned for more spirited driving. So, what you lose in doors you get back in fun. However, the Koup does feature a sizable trunk and the 60:40 split rear seat can be folded flat when the need arises.

The suspension and steering rack are tuned for better high-speed stability and more direct feel compared to the sedan and hatch.

Available sport-tuned

(firmer) shocks and struts on up-level models further improve cornering performance.

The base EX is fitted with a 156-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine while opting for the premium SX gets you a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder.
