The son of the man widely credited for Delta’s first Fraser River crossing into Richmond wants to see his father’s life work saved from demolition.

Doug Massey, a former municipal councillor, says he doesn’t want the new bridge renamed after his father, George Massey.

“It doesn’t reflect my father’s wishes or dreams,” he said. “He wasn’t responsible for a bridge being built, he was responsible for the tunnel being built.”

Massey has started an online petition to retain the George Massey Tunnel after the new crossing is built and it has received 83 signatures since Sept.

23. He plans on beginning a paper petition as well.

If the tunnel is saved it could be used as a direct access from Ladner to Richmond and also as an express route for emergency vehicles, said Massey.

“The present tunnel doesn’t allow for bicycles but if you left it you could have one lane for pedestrians and bicycles and the other for rapid transit,” he said.

Massey has numerous concerns about the new bridge, including the length of approach that will be required for elevation gain and whether the

“As far as I’m concerned a tunnel would be more logical for that section of the area because the ground level is so flat,” said Massey.

It’s an opinion that was passed down to him from his father.

When George Massey arrived in Delta from Ireland in 1936 he would take the ferry from Captain’s Cove to Richmond and

ask people why there wasn’t a tunnel from Deas Island.

That idea went against the conventional wisdom at the time–that a bridge would eventually be built there, an idea supported by local businesses and the New Westminster Harbour Board.

But George Massey worked tirelessly to convince the people of Delta and Richmond that a tunnel made the most sense because it would have a much smaller footprint than a

bridge, and he devoted the rest of his life to seeing it happen.

Massey’s plans for the tunnel were inspired by the construction of the Maastunnel in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

He formed the Lower Fraser River Crossing Improvement Association and developed maps explaining why a tunnel made the most sense. After being elected MLA to represent Delta in 1956 he managed to convince the legislature, too.

In 1967, three years after his

death, Richmond city council led the call to rename the tunnel to honour George Massey’s work.

Doug Massey said he agrees that Delta needs another crossing but had assumed it would be from Tilbury Island. He said the tunnel was designed to last 100 years and still has a lot of use left.

The only problem is that it was designed to traffic conditions in 1959 and doesn’t have enough lanes, he added.

Doug Massey said the new bridge is only being built so the channel can be dredged deeper for coal and oil exports.

“The intended purpose should always be to move people but it’s for ships and trucks,” he said, adding the tunnel is a road block for the federal and provincial government to move raw materials.

On Sept. 20, Premier Christy Clark announced a new bridge will replace the Massey Tunnel and work will begin in 2017.

Although no announcement has been made on tolls, they are expected to be implemented as they were for the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges. The Massey Tunnel opened with tolls in 1959 and continued until the construction costs were paid off in 1964.

Eliminating the Massey Tunnel would open up the Fraser River to expanded shipping that could in some cases help take truck traffic off the roads.

Jeff Scott lists that as one of the benefits that would come with a new Deas Island bridge promised by the province, provided the tunnel is removed and the channel is dredged.

“I think it creates opportunities for growth and expansion

up and down the Fraser River that could result in thousands of jobs and significant economic benefit,” Scott said.

Ships carrying more containers are among those that could sail upstream if the channel is deepened to allow vessels loaded to a draft

of 13.5 metres, instead of the limit of 11.5 metres now.

That wouldn’t necessarily mean larger ships sailing on the river.

Scott said Panamax-size vessels – the same size as the oil tankers that load at Kinder Morgan’s terminal on Bur-

rard Inlet – already sail up to Fraser Surrey Docks, but they can’t be fully loaded because of the channel depth at the tunnel.

“You’ll see the same ships, we could just load larger volume on them,” he predicted.

The Delta School District will receive provincial reimbursement sooner than expected for seismic upgrades scheduled for three schools.

The district’s director of facilities, Frank Geyer, told the school board last week that the province will return the $200,000 expenditure for geotechnical work once it approves and submits it on their capital plan.

Ordinarily, Delta would have to fund its own pre-design work and prepare reports in order to get full project approval, but Geyer said because the work is so extensive for Delta Secondary he has secured early reimbursement.

“What I did was I went to the province and said, ok we know you support the project, we appreciate that and thank you for putting us on the list, but this is too much money for us to have to put up and then have to wait for an approval to get reimbursed,” he said.

Geyer said the opportunity to receive provincial funding is very limited because ordinarily only school districts with increasing enrollment receive capital funds for expansions or additions to schools.

Since 2004, the Ministry of Education has engaged engineers and geoscientists to complete a comprehensive re-assessment of seismic safety at more than 500 B.C. schools previously identified for potential funding under the School Seismic Mitigation Program. ❙ Continued on A4

“I know that I was upset, and so were a lot of other people, that we were taking the paintings down,” she said.

The change is based on a new policy from Fraser Health, approved in February and introduced to the Delta Hospital Auxiliary in August.

Lea Price, another member of the guild, said she has obtained the nine page document from Fraser Health explaining the new policy.

One of the new rules reads, “Artwork on display in public and patient care areas must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate committee and must meet the Fraser Health Authority artwork content guidelines.”

Price said that artwork will now be accepted only if they can be sold following a period of display with the proceeds going toward the hospital foundation. She said it’s unfortunate that it can’t be there merely for therapeutic purposes.

An informal agreement between the Delta Hospital Auxiliary and the guild has been in place for more than 15 years.

The paintings that are for sale offer 10 per cent of the proceeds to the auxiliary, five per cent to the guild, and the rest to the artist.

McCurdy said the auxiliary spends a lot of money on the care and comfort of patients, families, caregivers and staff and considers the display of artwork as being therapeutic to all. She

said art has a place in patient therapy, as does music, which is also sponsored by the auxiliary.

Volunteers from the guild typically change the displays every three to four months and are responsible for the general care and cleanliness of the work. According to the new policy, artwork will now have to be displayed behind glass, to protect against the transmission of disease.

“The community of Delta, which includes all of its artists, has a sense of ownership in its hospital,” said McCurdy. “They built it, fought to keep it open, support it financially and are reluctant to transfer benefits to the

health authority when it comes to community issues that do not involve actual health care.”

McCurdy said appreciation, not monetary reward, has been the greatest reward artists receive for displaying the works.

“This is the viewer’s loss and will not be replaced by five or so paintings behind glass that the committee feels will ‘enhance the therapeutic environment,’” she said.

Tasleem Juma, a spokesperson for Fraser Health, said she understands the artwork has always been a source of pride for the artists, auxiliary, and hospital.

“The objective remains the same–to maintain that relationship of co-creating an environment that is aesthetically pleasing but also therapeutic within the hospital,” she said, adding there will be discussions between the hospital and artists guild to work out which paintings will return.

“The goal is to maintain the relationship while respecting the new policy that the hospital also has to take into consideration,” she said. “So, it’s finding a balance between the two.”

But McCurdy isn’t sure that will happen. Since the criteria includes that artwork must be juried by a committee, approved as appropriate, covered in glass, must be for sale or donated, she said the terms may be too onerous for the guild.

“If artists wish to comply with the new terms on an individual basis they are free to do so and can be supplied with the new guidelines,” she said.

Based on the latest scientific research, improved technology and study of recent major earthquakes around the world, the new assessment, released in May 2012, identified 152 schools with at least one “high risk” building section that need to be addressed with structural upgrades under the program.

On April 8, 2013, the province announced a new three-year plan to address structural upgrades at 45 high-priority schools.

Delta has three schools on the province’s new priority list, including both of South Delta’s high schools and Gibson Elementary in North Delta.

School districts have been asked to determine the project scope and costs for construction, expected to take place in mid to late 2014. Although the school board approved the capital plan, Trustee Simon Truelove said it’s regrettable trustees don’t input into the most appropriate way to use money to make children safe and upgrade the buildings.

“We don’t get to be on the ground floor talking about how the money should be allocated,” he said. “What we’re told is it’s all about earthquake improvement and that’s the top priority. And no question it’s a priority but it’s not the only priority about safety in buildings.”

Truelove compared the funding allocation to a “gamble” as to whether an earthquake would occur within the lifespan of the buildings designated for seismic upgrades.

“We’re doing something that feels a little more like rubber stamping and I’m just reacting to that,” he said.

Ladner businesses want more money from film companies ❙ Adrian MacNair reporter adrian@southdeltaleader.com

Ladner business owners want better compensation if movie crews are going to continue disrupting businesses by filming in the village.

That was the message passed along to Arvind Sharma of the Corporation of Delta during the Ladner Business Association’s (LBA) weekly meeting last Thursday. Sharma said the communication process between movie crews and businesses needs to be more effective so that merchants have time to prepare for disruptions.

In the past 21 months there have been seven television and movie productions shot in Ladner, including Supernatural, Fairly Odd Christmas, Killer Among Us, Psycho 7, Jinxed, and most recently the A&E drama Bates Motel. An eighth film called Fairly Odd Summer was scheduled for shooting from Tuesday to Thursday this past week.

“The most I’ve ever been compensated is $500,” said Beth Stuart, who runs a chartered accountant business in the village.

Stuart said she supports the film industry and even has family who work in movies, but is concerned about the disruption to businesses

The issue came to a head two weeks ago when local lawyer Murray Lott held a one-man protest by draping a “Ladner, B.C.” banner around his office building, claiming nobody compensated him for using his building in the shot.

Lott said the $500 that movies are giving the LBA in compensation isn’t enough and needs to be raised significantly. He threatened to put his sign back up when the next film crew comes to town if that doesn’t happen.

Bill McKnight of South Coast Casuals is the LBA’s liaison in dealing with location managers. He said filming has contributed $25,000 to local businesses since Sept. 2001.

McKnight said the sudden surge

of filming in the past year is an uptick after relatively little filming in the past three. But he said most production companies will compensate businesses if their accountant shows them lost revenue for the days they were shooting.

Some business owners, however, said the cost of the accountant would probably offset the compensation.

James Price of Ladner Village Hardware said the film crews have a positive effect on local retailers and restaurants.

“Most times that they’re filming in Ladner I’m seeing extra dollars or being compensated for the people who can’t be bothered to walk the block or two to the store,” he said. Many people from Ladner

also receive money by working as movie extras, and they shop and eat in the village when they’re not on set.

Janet Holmes of Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe said she has cooperated with movies crews and was surprised to see many of them were local.

“Yes, it affected my business regularly to a certain extent but it also affected me in a positive way because some of those people came back,” she said, adding it’s about keeping a positive mental attitude.

Numerous suggestions were made to improve relations with film crews, including Delta hiring a full-time liaison like the City of Richmond. Crews should also be more helpful in redirecting pedestrian and vehicular traffic when they’ve cordoned off an area. One suggestion was made that there should be special parking fees, since Delta doesn’t have paid parking like other municipalities.

There was also talk of limiting the number of movie permits in Ladner to one every four months.

Murray Lott suggested every film should pay into a community fund with an amount based on the overall size of their budget.

The next movie scheduled to shoot in Ladner is on Dec. 16.

That’s significant because it’s uneconomic right now for shippers to essentially pay twice to use two ships, along with the cost of loading them, when they could instead send out one fully loaded from a different terminal.

“It’s economies of scale,” Scott said. “If they have to pay twice they go somewhere else where they only have to pay once to load a vessel up.”

Scott uses the example of the Interfor sawmill that’s adjacent to Fraser Surrey Docks.

It can’t fully load lumber on a ship at Fraser Surrey Docks so it instead trucks all that lumber across town to Burrard Inlet, where a large ship can be filled to capacity with Interfor lumber, the same as the forest company’s competitors do.

“You have all that impact on the community and roads of trucking that to Vancouver, just to accommodate a deeper draft vessel,” he said.

Scott said there might actually be fewer ships moving on the river, but more fully loaded.

The terminal also hopes to drum up more shipping business with more efficient, heavily laden vessels.

Scott lists wheat, grains and specialty crops, as well as potash and forest products, as the likeliest cargo types Fraser Surrey Docks might attract.

The terminal is also in the midst of a contentious proposal to open a new coal-handling facility that would transfer coal from trains onto barges and send it to Texada Island for reloading to larger ships.

Asked if Fraser Surrey Docks could load ocean-going coal ships after the tunnel is gone, rather than barging first to Texada, Scott said he’s focused on proceeding with the coal terminal as it’s now proposed.

Asked if an alternate oil export terminal on the river for Kinder Morgan’s pipeline might be another possibility, Scott said he’s heard no talk of that.

The provincial government’s new contract with school support staff includes a 3.5 per cent increase in wages, but it’s up to local school districts to come up with the money to pay for it. The provincial template agreement is a two-year deal covering clerical, custodial and education assistants with a one per cent increase retroactive to July 1, 2013. An additional two per cent increase takes effect on Feb.

1, 2014, with a final increase of 0.5 per cent to come May 1, 2014.

Delta School District spokesperson Deneka Michaud said since the provincial government is not funding the increase, the local school board will have to change its budget allocations for this year.

“We’ll do so carefully to minimize impact to the classroom,” Michaud said.

The net impact for the 2013/14 school year on local schools is $500,000. The total cost of the 3.5 per

cent wage increase over the course of the contract is roughly $875,000.

However, Education Minister Peter Fassbender says boards protesting the cost of a 3.5 per cent raise for school support should have known it was coming, but some opted to wait and hope for an NDP government to take over. Fassbender said in an interview that school trustees have been working with the education ministry for months on “savings plans.” They knew the B.C. Liberal government would not increase budgets to cover a raise

for workers who haven’t seen one in four years, and have been without a contract for more than a year.

“I think there was some hope on the part of some [trustees] that we would, with our backs to the wall perhaps, come up with additional dollars,” Fassbender said. “And the other reality, quite honestly, was that up until May 14 there was some anticipation that there was going to be a change of government.”

Union locals and boards of education must all vote to ratify the agree-

ment by December for it to take effect.

Other districts calculate costs from the deal to be more than $2 million in Vancouver, $700,000 in Chilliwack and proportional amounts in other districts, most of which have already cut services due to declining enrolment.

Fassbender said the support staff settlement meets the government’s “cooperative gains” mandate imposed on all public service unions, because CUPE chose to accept a smaller raise and protect its ability to bank sick days.

Do you know what your favourite furry little feline friend does when he or she goes outside for some fresh air and exercise?

According to a new report from Environment Canada there’s a strong possibility that Felix is killing birds, with the national death toll ringing in at about 200 million annually.

That’s just one of nine leading causes of bird deaths related to human activities listed in the federal agency’s study on avian mortality across Canada.

A further 25 million birds are killed by electrocution from power lines and collisions with houses, 14 million are hit by cars and trucks, five million are killed by hunters, 2.7 million from ag-

ricultural pesticides, 2.2 million from agricultural mowing, close to one million from commercial forestry, and 220,000 by flying into communications towers. The extent to which these activities happen in Delta is unknown, although the region is host to some of the most diverse and numerous bird species in Canada.

Local bird author Anne Murray is an annual participant in the National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count, which observed 146 different species on Dec. 23, 2012. Located along the bird migration route known as the Pacific Flyway, Delta frequently trades places with Victoria for top birding area in Canada.

“I’ve often wondered why the power lines are not amalgamated because the municipality is just criss-crossed

with wires,” she said.

Murray said it’s important that buildings try and keep songbirds from crashing into windows as well.

“Young threshers and first year sparrows are the ones that often do hit windows and you can buy decals to put on your windows that work,” she said.

The report noted that although domestic cats number 8.5 million in Canada, the estimated 1.4 million to 4.2 million wild or stray cats kill double the amount of birds as their collar-wearing brethren. But Murray said house cats still hunt and kill birds even if they’re not hungry.

“They’re an animal, it’s their natural instinct,” she said. “And we have bird feeders that encourages birds to come a little bit closer to houses.”

Murray said the report might cause

people to reconsider what hours they allow their cats to go outside and restrict frequent trips that may be contributing to predation of birds.

Murray said that even if people don’t like birds they need to recognize their importance to the ecosystem.

Although agricultural uses are listed as having a negative effect on birds in the Environment Canada report, the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust notes that its programs help protect bird species and provide resting areas during migration.

“For 20 years, the Trust has worked with local farmers to manage farmland in a way that is beneficial both to soil conservation and preservation of wildlife habitat,” said program coordinator Christine Terpsma. “We have six stewardship programs available to

the farming community, including our grassland set-aside program, which provides an average of 550 acres of tall grass habitat throughout Delta and Richmond on an annual basis.”

This fallow grassland becomes habitat for small mammals which are then hunted by raptors listed under the Species-at-Risk Act, including the short-eared owl and barn owl. Terpsma said such habitat provisions are a key component to sustaining raptor populations in Delta. A Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust report from March also notes that their Winter Cover Crop program helps feed the thousands of migrating Arctic snow geese each year. According to that report, overall snow goose populations rebounded to 120,000 in 2006 from a low of 50,000 in the mid 1970s.

hen Marcia McCafferty’s youngest son Sean began showing signs that he was developing much differently than his older brother, like any parent she was deeply concerned.

“Sean’s brother was an early talker, but not Sean,” she says. “He would have trouble coping, he couldn’t socialize, and new environments were very challenging.”

Sean was soon diagnosed with autism, a developmental condition that effects how information is processed by the brain, result in social and communication difficulties.

Thankfully, McCafferty’s neighbour pointed her in the direction of Reach Child and Youth Development Society. The non-profit organization offers

For McCafferty, the counseling and therapy offered by Reach gave her hope that her son would be able to lead a normal life.

“When I first came to Reach, I thought [Sean] would be like that forever,” she says. “But my expectations went through the roof of what he could become. He made huge progress right away… which is why early intervention is so important.

“There’s so much that can be done.”

Today Sean is a healthy and happy 20-year-old, working as a mechanic apprentice at the McCafferty’s automotive shop in Ladner.

McCafferty has spent the past 16 years volunteering with Reach, and is

in Surrey later today. The victim’s parents, Paul and Wendi Johnson, will be speaking about the arrest at the press conference.

Paul Johnson is a pastor at South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen. He told the South Delta Leader in March that his son had been

helping to launch the organization’s newest fundraising project: the Finds Children’s Thrift Store.

The thrift store is housed at Reach’s facility at 3800 72nd street in East Ladner, and offers like-new clothing, toys, and games for children 12 and under.

The store is 100 per cent volunteer-run, with all money raised going to Reach’s inclusive preschool, therapy programs, and programs for teens with special needs.

“Everything is donated, so it’s costing us almost nothing,” says McCafferty.

Finds will be celebrating its grand opening this Monday, Oct. 7 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the first 15 customers will receive a free Reach tote bag.

house-sitting at the Langley home. Taylor Johnson was an avid sports enthusiast, playing rugby at South Delta Secondary when he attended there, and previously at Tucson High in Arizona. He also enjoyed snowboarding, ice hockey and baseball.

“He was the kind of kid that was really well-liked by all of his friends,” said Johnson. “He was a very endearing, very soft-hearted kid.”

He had been attending the Nimbus School of Recording Arts to pursue a career in music and was due to graduate this month.

Premier has tunnel vision

P

remier Christy Clark’s pledge to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a bridge was the biggest news to come out of the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, and the new bridge will have a major impact on Delta, Surrey and White Rock.

Clark said construction will begin in 2017, which (not by coincidence) is an election year. The Liberals would dearly like to win back the Delta-South seat, which independent MLA Vicki Huntington has now won twice.

But the bridge is not tied to an election as much as it is the latest in a series of replacements of aging major river and lake crossings. The biggest one, of course, is the new Port Mann Bridge, but there is also the Pitt River Bridge, the W.R. Bennett Bridge in Kelowna, and the Kicking Horse bridge east of Golden on Highway 1.

In doing so, the Liberals have positioned themselves as builders of infrastructure on a scale comparable to that done by premiers W.A.C. Bennett and Bill Bennett. This has always been popular in B.C. and serves to position the province for future growth.

In the case of the Deas Island crossing, a new bridge would serve a number of purposes. It would ease congestion in the tunnel. It would eliminate the need for seismic upgrades. Perhaps most importantly, it would make it possible for larger ships with deeper drafts to come up the Fraser River and use Fraser Surrey Docks, which are under-utilized. Ships are getting larger and larger and a deep river channel is vital in attracting new business.

There are many legitimate concerns. One is that the bridge will funnel too much traffic onto crossings further north, such as the Oak Street and Knight Street bridges. The Oak Street Bridge was built at the same time as the tunnel, and is also a candidate for replacement. The Knight Street is newer, but both it and the Oak Street span are already heavily congested at rush hour.

Another concern is the strong possibility that the new bridge will be tolled. While tolls are a legitimate way to pay for new infrastructure, there does need to be a fairer way to levy them. Many mayors, such as Surrey’s Dianne Watts, have suggested regional tolling, with a much smaller fee of 50 cents or $1 to cross all major river crossings.

Road pricing has also been mentioned.

Some planners complain there is little discussion of how transit fits into the new bridge. They also question this announcement, in the light of the fact that there is a stalemate on TransLink funding and expansion of the transit system.

They are ignoring politics. Premiers often make major announcements at the UBCM convention. There will be plenty of discussion about TransLink in the coming months, as there is more dialogue about a referendum which is scheduled to take place next year.

It is important that farmland in Richmond and Delta is not impacted by the new bridge, but given that it is replacing a tunnel, that should be easy to achieve.

The premier has identified a need and is working to do something about it. That’s good news for the fast-growing population south of the Fraser River.

I

’ve written before about “old economy Steve,” the Internet’s invention of a stereotypical baby boomer who got a job straight out of high school, worked and progressed under steady employment, and retired with a good pension and a home that’s paid off.

Turns out the stereotype wasn’t just a joke.

According to a new Stats Canada report, older baby boomers in Canada enjoyed long-term job stability throughout their lives, usually working for between three to six private-sector employers and experiencing few layoffs.

Now in their mid-60s, two-thirds of these boomers worked at “longterm” jobs, defined as lasting 12 years or more. A majority worked even longer, 20 years or more, the report says.

To a baby of a baby boomer–namely me–that’s just kind of impossible to wrap your head around.

According to a Stats Canada report from 2006, the so-called Generation X (especially those born between

1972 and 1976) were three times more likely to move back home after leaving the nest.

I’m right in the sweet spot of that one. Born in 1974, I had several false starts to my life, returning to my parents home at least three times following layoffs, recessions and failed careers.

The last one wasn’t too long ago either. In 2007 I moved in with my father while trying to swap the B.C. job market for the one in Ontario.

Those lost years of income in my 20s and early 30s mean that, much like a lot of Generation Xers and now the Ys, I’m farther behind than my parents in terms of savings, credit, and asset accumulation. I have no investments, no stocks, no home equity.

But the crazy thing is that I’m now bankrolling my boomer parents’ retirement through my taxes. And it’s about to get worse.

Referred to as the “Grey Tsunami” by some statisticians, the 2011 census found that today’s taxpayers are

carrying nearly five million seniors, or 14.8 percent of Canada’s population. In 1971, the heydays of the boomer generation, that number was eight per cent.

Anticipating this tsunami, in 2011 the federal government raised the age eligibility to receive Old Age Pension to 67 years, following a 32 per cent projected cost increase between 2010 and 2015.

Where the money is going to come from to support Canada’s social security network, including health care and pensions, is a huge unknown, particularly as job scarcity and higher educational requirements have delayed wealth accumulation for today’s youth.

If the boomers want to help their babies, try getting them into a mortgage so they start building equity.

Postpone your trip to Europe and babysit your grandkids so both parents can work. And give us some financial advice.

Because at this point we’ll take all the help we can get.

Letters to the editor No need for Terminal 2 Before Terminal 2 is considered for Roberts Bank, the need for port expansion must be established and the least environmentally damaging alternatives must be considered.

Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) claims an increase of eight per cent in the number of TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) handled in 2012 over 2011. But from 2008 to 2012 the total increase was only nine per cent so an average of 2.25 per cent per year. Over the same four years, Prince Rupert Port increased by 210 per cent.

PMV’s Robin Silvester also claims 2012 was a record at 2.71M TEUs, but this is only 65 per cent of current capacity.

Upgrades underway at PMV will more than double its capacity to 6.70M TEUs. Prince Rupert is set to quadruple its port capacity to 2M TEUs by 2015.

How much more port traffic is coming to West Coast ports? The widened Panama Canal is set to open in 2015. China and

Russia tested an Arctic container route this summer through the Northwest Passage. International Drewry Consultants say these projects will mean “any new trade will probably pass the West Coast by. Volumes are unlikely to decline, but the days of strong growth on the Pacific Coast are behind us.” So it appears Terminal 2 on Roberts Bank is not needed.

An environmental review panel of proposed port expansion on Roberts Bank in 1979 concluded that the potential impacts on the Fraser River estuary were too great to recommend development. An even larger expansion now when for example, Environment Canada reported an 80% decline in spring shorebird numbers since the mid-1990s, is too great a risk to this vital, internationally significant ecosystem.

Further, PMV ship traffic passes through the Gulf Islands National Park and Orca Pass, the summer habitat of the endangered southern resident orcas (killer whales). The approach to Prince Rupert port is direct so if there is ever

any need for west coast port expansion this should be done in Prince Rupert.

Bridge will make a mess Re: “New bridge to replace aging tunnel,” South Delta Leader, Sept. 27, 2013.

Premier Christy Clark fails to mention the significant additional space and construction that will be required in order to attempt to relieve some of the massive congestion of traffic in the George Massey Tunnel area, to go along with the wafting coal dust clouds and loss of much needed Delta and Richmond farmland – all in exchange for a larger port if great increases in coal imports come to fruition. In such a likely scenario, a healthy environment is once again supposed to take a back seat to extremely large coal extractions and shipping, creating transport corridor nightmares.

There’s no second chance when it comes to head injuries

R

ecently I was updated on an accident that occurred last spring. While this topic may not be related to criminal activity, it is about public safety and something I feel strongly about.

The youth involved in the accident suffered major head trauma and was lucky to survive - thanks to his helmet. The head injury however, has changed his life.

He has a difficult time concentrating, has developed behavioural issues and suffers from anxiety and sometimes depression. These changes occurred immediately after the accident that caused the head injury and, as a growing body of research shows, it may last his lifetime.

In another circumstance, someone I know very well was involved in a terrible bicycle accident in which he, too, was lucky to be alive.

He describes his experience after suffering severe head trauma: “Having a head injury has changed me. While most people are able to recharge their battery to 100 per cent through sleep, rest or relaxation, I can’t. My battery never charges past about 60 per cent. My attention is often divided – if there is a distraction in the room, it takes all of my brain power to ignore it and this leads to mental and emotional fatigue.

I have forgotten the birth of three of my children because they were born before my accident and my long term memory is gone.

I am also more aggressive than I was before. This stems from a lack of patience for what is going on

in my head. The knowledge that I will never be the same is hard to handle but I do take some comfort in knowing that I am not alone, that other people are going through what I am going through. I can’t imagine what it would be like as a teenager with a head injury.

Sitting in class trying to focus would be impossible and I can imagine the anxiety and frustration young adults with head injuries feel because they don’t understand what is happening to them.

But even though I have suffered and I have had to learn to live with a head injury, I am alive because I was wearing a helmet. I may not remember the birth of my children but I am home to tuck them in at night and for that I am thankful.”

There is research being done with the National Football League showing that retired players who suffered concussions during their careers have developed issues such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, depression and in the worst cases, have committed suicide. A head injury can last a lifetime and bring with it severe long term implications.

Head trauma is serious. Make it a top priority to protect the heads in your home from injury. Wear helmets at all times when doing activities such as riding bikes, skateboarding and skiing. Instill in your kids that helmets are a ‘must’ even when parents aren’t around. The bottom line is there aren’t many second chances when it comes to head injuries.

Many unanswered questions about Massey tunnel replacement I believe most residents of Delta and Surrey are delighted to hear that there will be relief for the commuters who have faced long delays at the George Massey Tunnel. But I have a few questions I would like the Minister of Highways to answer and make public.

The beautiful illustration of the proposed bridge shows it on the same alignment as the tunnel and it all looks so neat and tidy but we all know that that is impossible. It must be either east or west of the tunnel because the tunnel will have to be in use while the bridge is under construction. How far east or west is an important question because there was a reinforced series of concrete blankets laid over the tunnel to prevent the river from undermining it. I believe they extend several hundred yards on each side. If the bridge is built west of the tunnel it could make it disturbingly close to the final stage of the Marina Gardens development. If it is built east of the tunnel it could have a very detrimental effect on Deas Island Park.

My second concern is the access that Ladner commuters would have to the new bridge. I believe Tsawwassen and ferry traffic will be encouraged to travel on the South Fraser Perimeter Road and access Highway 99 farther east. What consideration has been given to the possibility of extending River Road to Vasey Road (60th Avenue), hence all the way to Highway 17?

Where will the cloverleaf on the north end of the new bridge be, and how much of Highway 99 will have to be resisted to meet the new bridge and allow it to have a reasonable grade to achieve the height required for the large coal and container ships to pass under it? Surely there will be coal as well as log and container ships loading at Surrey, Fraser docks.

I was there when the tunnel was built and George Massey took me on a tour of it when the bulkheads at the ends of the sections were taken away. How will the tunnel be removed? That will be a major operation because I understand you plan is to deepen the whole river by forty feet. If it wasn’t the tunnel could have the necessary refit and be used as a light rail conduit.

Has there been any environmental review on the plan to deepen the main channel? What effect will that have on the marshes that are so necessary for the migratory birds? I would think taking away most of the water from the secondary channels and possibly the north arm would have a tendency to dry them up.

I understand the new bridge is only four years away and knowing how long it takes to draw up the plans for a project of this magnitude I assume the answers to these questions are readily available.

Century Group sells Marpole Midden to Musqueam Parcel was originally slated for five-storey residential project until human remains found on site ❙ Adrian MacNair reporter adrian@southdeltaleader.com

The so-called “Marpole Midden” saga has come to a conclusion with the announcement that the Musqueam Indian Band has purchased the land from Tsawwassen-based real estate company Century Holdings.

Originally slated for a five-story mixed residential and commercial project on less than a hectare of land near the on-ramp to the Arthur Laing bridge and Marine Drive, work was stopped after human remains were found by construction crews.

Following an archaeological study the remains were deemed to be an ancient burial site for the Musqueam people, and last September the province said it would not extend a permit for the development to continue.

“The successful resolution of the development plans for these lands demonstrates First Nations and private property owners can work together to understand each other’s interests, and conduct business in a respectful way,” said Chief Wayne Sparrow of the Musqueam, adding the main goal was always to protect the interests of the

Coast Salish people are believed to have occupied the area from 2,000 years ago until about the 1800s when smallpox wiped out many First Nations populations.

The ancient village and burial site was discovered in 1884 during the upgrading of Garypie Farm Road and the site of excavations for many years until it was declared a National Historic Site in 1933. It is believed to be one of the largest pre-contact middens in Western Canada.

When the burial site was discovered in 2012 protesters held numerous rallies to prevent the development from going

ahead. Century Group president Sean Hodgins said he was pleased that the Musqueam acted honourably by purchasing the land as they promised following the work stoppage. The sale, however, did not prevent the company from taking a significant loss on their investment.

“In the end of the day it’s just one of the ups and downs of a difficult business,” he said. “Sometimes you lose your shirt and other times you lose the sleeves off your shirt. So this time we only lost the sleeves.”

Hodgins said the project first took shape when the Hackett family, which has been friends with the Hodgins family for 50 years, approached Century Holdings with a proposal to redevelop their land in Marpole.

Century HQ Development had pre-sold most of the 108-units from the five-storey residential building with ground floor retail shops when the bones were discovered.

Hodgins said he didn’t think the project would be scrapped by the discovery of the bones, adding in other instances where a burial site has been unearthed a First Nations group has relocated the ancestral remains.

“It just depends on the sensitivities of the local First Nation. So, they were very sensitive about it in this case.”

The Musqueam is currently in discussions with all levels of government on identifying the next steps in protecting the Marpole Midden.

hen Beverly Marlin was a young man he could talk just about anybody into buying a house, and with his charisma and smile he usually did.

“Bev” spent 42 years selling real estate around Tsawwassen and metropolitan Vancouver, making connections as easily as he made friends.

Trips to Europe with his wife Ursula, golf with his friends in Richmond, and sailing were all a part of the 67-year-old’s former lifestyle.

“I used to be wild and reckless,” he says, with a mischievous grin and a twinkle in his eye.

Ursula remembers the day that all changed about six years ago. She visited her husband during an open house showing and a couple was asking Bev some questions.

But although he had heard them speak, no

words came in reply. The more time passed the more Ursula could see his anxiety stretch across his face like a dark cloud. He simply couldn’t respond.

It’s not uncommon for people like Bev to be at a loss for words. He’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, an incurable neurological disorder that is degenerative and defined as being “idiopathic”–there is no known cause.

Common symptoms include shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and speech, and difficulty walking.

The disease is named after English doctor James Parkinson, who published the first detailed description of “shaking palsy” nearly two centuries ago.

“Looking back, you can tell when things changed,” says Ursula, who can remember the

earliest symptoms dating back to 1997.

It was then that she saw a change in Bev’s personality, noticing he wasn’t getting the same fulfillment from the things he usually enjoyed.

Like many people with Parkinson’s, he also began to get emotional easily. He would cry during moments that wouldn’t call for it, such as the middle of an uneventful baseball game.

Bev began to withdraw from society, from his friends, from the life he knew.

Going outside can be a frightening social experiment. Although Bev takes the prescription drug Sinemet to calm his tremors and make it easier to speak, a side effect is dizziness.

“People ask me if Bev had a stroke or has he been drinking,” says Ursula. “When he goes for a walk some people ask if he needs help home

because they think he’s sick or drunk.”

Now he carries a card with him at all times which explains his condition. And once somebody reads it they recognize the name Parkinson’s right away because of its association with actor Michael J. Fox. Fox is practically the poster child for Parkinson’s, having been diagnosed in 1991 at the age of just 30. One of the most iconic actors of the 1980s, known for campy comedies and action flicks, his public announcement in 1999 seemed to be the crushing end to his career.

But during the past 14 years Fox has brought attention and awareness to people suffering with Parkinson’s. And far from ending his career, Fox has continued acting, recently debuting a new TV show on NBC which features him dealing with Parkinson’s in humourous ways.

In the show’s online trailer one scene depicts him dialing 911 by accident because his “medication hasn’t kicked in yet.”

Another scene shows him riding in the back of a shaky ambulance and deadpanning the joke, “for me, this is perfectly still.”

There are also several jokes and references to the emotional manipulation sometimes used to evoke sympathy for diseases like Parkinson’s.

Poking fun at your serious condition seems to be a membership requirement to the club. Peter Scholfield, 72, calls his Parkinson’s support group “the movers and the shakers of Tsawwassen.”

“We try not to take ourselves too seriously,” says Peter in a faint Scottish accent.

He and his wife, Eileen, are exercise partners with Bev and Ursula in the Big Moves Big Gains program that’s aimed specifically for people living with Parkinson’s. They, and roughly 15 other people diagnosed with Parkinson’s and their caregivers, go every Friday morning to the South Delta Rec Centre to socialize, exercise, and vocalize.

“There’s a lot of laughing going on,” says Eileen, adding it’s a chance for Parkinson’s sufferers to just let loose.

Indeed, the shouting from some of the more exuberant members can seem more cathartic than clinical.

“If you were there and you didn’t know what it was about you’d think we were crazy,” admits Ursula, who was instrumental in getting the program off the ground.

Because her husband’s voice is

weak from Parkinson’s, the singing and shouting exercises help strengthen Bev’s vocal chords. Peter benefits in the same way.

“It’s a real frustration sometimes because I know what I want to say and I can hear it in my head but I can’t say it,” he says.

Peter compares his condition to a two-way radio where he has to wait for the person to finish speaking before he can start.

“And I’ve got my caregiver here,” says Peter, sending a tender smile in the direction of Eileen.

Nearly 100,000 Canadians live with Parkinson’s, including 11,000 in B.C. As the baby boomer generation grows older, those numbers are expected to double over the next decade.

Although there is no cure in sight, the Parkinson Society of Canada will spend $1.76 million over the next two years on continued search for causes and improving treatments and medication.

"We try not to take ourselves too seriously" -Peter Scholfield, Parkinson’s support group member equipment, even folding chairs. Because people with Parkinson’s tend to slouch, the exercises are important in maintaining a good posture.

When Peter was diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 65 it was just a little tremor in one finger. Now, both hands shake perceptibly, requiring Sinemet to calm the tremors.

“It’s not a permanent thing at first,” says Peter. “It sort of comes and goes so you can ignore it and deny.”

But he says there are as many different manifestations of Parkinson’s as there are people who have it. And he considers himself one of the least affected members of the group. He can still drive a car, run his own errands, and lead a relatively normal life.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation contends that the best hope for the disease may be stem cell research.

Parkinson’s occurs when dopamine-producing cells in the midbrain die, and the foundation believes stem cells could replace those dying cells.

However, progress on stem cell research remains slow due to political and religious considerations south of the border. And at any rate, Ursula says she doesn’t expect a cure to happen in Bev’s lifetime.

Instead, they’re focusing on what they can do right now. Spending time with each other, and with their good friends, “the movers and shakers of Tsawwassen.”

Blexo Developments unveiled plans for their ambitious highrise at 11941 80 Ave. on Wednesday. The 37-storey Delta Rise commercial and residential highrise will be the tallest building in Delta - larger than Sur-

rey’s 25-storey Central City highrise, which preceded a development boom in Whalley.

The Delta proposal has been controversial from the outset, with many area residents opposed to increased density in the neighbourhood of mostly single-family homes. Others have taken issue with

the building being given approval before Delta completed its North Delta Area Plan (NDAP), a blueprint for development in the area which is currently underway.

The mixed-use building will include 359 apartments and a four-storey commercial component with a max-

imum 2,304-sq.-metre (24,800-sq.-ft.) area.

Delta staff and politicians believe Delta Rise will be the impetus for development along the Scott Road corridor, which has long struggled to attract investors.

“The interest on the Scott Road corridor is starting to happen,” Delta’s chief administrative officer George Harvie told a group of about 80

people at the Delta Rise unveiling.

That is being backed, he said, by capital investment by Delta, noting council is moving forward this year with a $10-million expansion to the North Delta Recreation Centre, at 11415 84 Ave. Delta will also be offering incentives to other developers looking to build along the corridor.

Depending on the type and scope of the proposal, that could include waiving a sizable portion of building permit fees and development cost charges.

Harvie said the Delta Rise project will provide competitive prices, offering opportunities for people who are retiring or others looking to get into the market for the first time. The price of a

one-bedroom, 572 sq.ft. unit at Delta Rise will begin at $189,000. The two-bedroom, 734-sq.ft. apartments will sell for $234,000 and penthouse suites will begin at $334,000. Blexo will begin pre-selling units in November.

“What we’re offering is some of the best housing options that the community needs here,” Sharma said.

Delta cement plant paving the way forward ❙ Staff writer news@southdeltaleader.com

Delta’s Lehigh Hanson cement plant is helping to reduce carbon emissions with an innovative new form of cement called Contempra.

Launched two years ago, Contempra results in 10 per cent lower CO2 emissions and is quickly becoming the preferred standard for new concrete construction projects in B.C. The new cement type now accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domes-

tic cement consumed in the province, and that demand is growing according to the Cement Association of Canada.

By converting to Contempra-based concrete, more than 23,000 tonnes of greenhouse gasses have been taken out of the atmosphere annualy, the equivalent to saving 9,760,000 litres of gasoline or not burning 9,800 tonnes of coal.

“We are delighted with the market’s enthusiastic response and with the tremendous strides… Lehigh Hanson [has] made

in establishing this lower carbon cement as the cement of choice in British Columbia,” said Michael McSweeney, President and CEO of the Cement Association of Canada.

The cement is made with up to 15 per cent limestone, rather than with the five per cent as is the case for regular Portland cement, reducing the amount of energy and greenhouse gas emissions required to manufacture it. The new cement produces concrete with the same level of strength and durability as concrete pro-

• Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, broiling of boiling food.

• If you must leave the kitchen, even for a short time, turn off the stove.

• When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay home and use a timer to remind yourself.

• If you have young children, use the stove's back burners whenever possible. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the stove • When you cook, wear clothing with tight-fitting sleeves.

• Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, towels or anything else that can burn away from your stovetop.

• Clean up food and grease from the burners, stovetops and the oven.

• Don't store combustibles in drawer below the oven.

Cooking

• U.S. Fire Departments responded to an estimated annual average of 156,600 cooking-related fires between 2007-2011, resulting in 400 civilian deaths, 5,080 civilian injuries and $853 million in direct damage.

• Two of every five home fires start in the kitchen.

• Unattended cooking was a factor in 34 per cent of reported home cooking fires.

• Two-thirds of home cooking fires started with ignition of food or other cooking materials.

• Ranges accounted for the 58 per cent of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16 per cent.

• Children under five face a higher risk of non-fire burns associated with cooking than being burned in a cooking fire.

• Microwave ovens are one of the leading home products associated with scald burn injuries not related to fires. Nearly half (44 per cent) of the microwave oven injuries seen at emergency rooms in 2011 were scald burns.

• Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1 per cent of home cooking fires, but these incidents accounted for 16 per cent of the cooking fire deaths.

TEN TIPS TO STAY FIRE SAFE.

1. Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, test it monthly and change the battery yearly.

2. Never leave cooking unattended.

3. Don’t overload electrical outlets.

4. Never leave candles unattended.

5. Stub cigarettes out completely and dispose of them safely.

6. Never store gasoline indoors.

7. Prevent arson by keeping your property clean of trash and flammables.

8. Keep flammable materials such as curtains and furniture at least one metre away from space heaters.

9. Store matches and lighters in a child-proof drawer or cabinet.

10. Create and practice a fire escape plan with your whole family. Get out, stay out and call 911.

Metro Vancouver mayors emerged from their first meeting with new Transportation Minister Todd Stone with no deal or even the makings of one on how to restructure TransLink or craft a referendum on transit expansion funding slated for next year. Mayors also expressed frustration Thursday that the province is pushing ahead with a Massey tunnel replacement bridge that they fear could push back transit as a priority. They object to the premier’s insistence there be a referendum on new taxes for TransLink, fearing it will be defeated at the polls.

And they continue to take a stance that TransLink must be reformed to give them more control over spending priorities as a precondition for their active participation in a referendum, if the province insists it go ahead. Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said he doesn’t see how the referendum can succeed.

“Despite the mayors saying it’s the stupidest idea imaginable they continue on with the referendum, they’re absolutely determined to hold it,” Corrigan said. “And it’s pretty clear that none of us are going to participate.”

He called it a “ridiculous” way to govern to go to referendum on such a complex issue.

“Why wasn’t there a referendum on the Port Mann Bridge? Why isn’t there a referendum about building a new Delta bridge? Why isn’t there a referendum on the Pattullo? Where they want to spend money there’s no referendum. Where they don’t want to spend money there’s a referendum.”

Corrigan noted the premier’s promise to give the people the final say came after the province concluded voters were wrong and misguided when they defeated the HST in a referendum.

“I don’t know how a referendum will pass,” said Mayors Council chair Richard Walton, added

he’s hopeful more meetings can hammer out a deal with the province by Christmas that provides some chance of success.

Walton predicted most people will vote against paying more taxes for transit – while continuing to demand more be provided – unless a very compelling case is presented.

Stone told reporters he shares a common vision with the mayors on the need to raise billions of dollars for additional transit expansion.

There is no decision yet on what exactly voters will be asked in the referendum, who will pay for it and lead it, or when it will be, other than it will take place no later than November of 2014.

Bellingham business leaders don’t expect a partial shutdown of the U.S. government that began Tuesday to cause major slowdowns for cross-border travellers, at least not immediately.

Some Republicans in the House of Representatives have refused to approve a spending bill to keep government operating in a bid to dismantle the health insurance reforms led by President Obama.

The move has forced non-critical departments to largely shut down.

Bellingham Chamber of Commerce interim executive director Bill Gorman said the effect on Canadians heading south across the border will depend on how many – if any – U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff are deemed non-essential and cease work.

He expects regular traffic over the border won’t feel any difference, but travellers needing to get a visa or make other applications could face longer waits.

Police, health officers weigh in on booze review Reforms urged to help curb gangsters, alcoholism ❙ Jeff Nagel reporter news@southdeltaleader.com

B.C. police chiefs are urging the provincial government to give their officers more power to haul gangsters out of bars and restaurants.

That’s one of the suggestions received so far by the government’s liquor policy review, which is expected to lead to significant reforms.

“The province has been dealing with a wave of gang violence with many shootings occurring in and around licensed premises,” Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich said in a submission to the review.

Rich, who chairs the legislative committee of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police, called for province-wide police power to unilaterally remove anyone they decide poses a risk to the public in a licensed establishment.

He said police already work with establishments through the Barwatch program to remove gang members, but owners or staff can be intimidated by gangsters.

“It’s the licensed premises that primarily has the authority to have people leave its premises if it’s concerned, but that’s difficult with gang members,” Rich said.

The police chiefs association also wants the definition of public drunkenness expanded to allow the arrest of people intoxicated by drugs, and not just liquor.

The submission also suggests the courts could order detoxification and treatment for the chronically intoxicated.

Another proposal would let police temporarily seize the guns of hunters they catch with open liquor.

Medical health officers are cautioning the government against letting liquor flow more freely.

They want the province to freeze or cut

the number of private liquor retailers and ban online ordering and delivery.

To combat disease from abuse of cheap high-alcohol drinks, they are seeking a minimum price of $3 per standard drink consumed on site and $1.50 for off sales.

They also want pricing tied to alcohol content, so youth and others aren’t encouraged to buy high-strength drinks.

They oppose any decrease in the drinking age of 19.

The province has indicated it isn’t considering changes to pricing or taxation, which provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall said is unfortunate.

“Policy measures such as taxation are the most cost-effective public health response to the alcohol-related disease burden in countries with moderate and high levels of alcohol consumption,” he said in own response to the review.

Kendall questioned the government’s top priority of increasing or maintaining government liquor revenue – ahead of the second principle of minimizing health and social harms – and argued health system and other costs of alcohol use far exceed government revenues.

Meanwhile, a group called Campaign for Culture is promoting a return of happy hours

and also urges the province to okay the sale of craft liquor at farmers’ markets.

B.C. is the only province that bans bars and restaurants from offering happy hour discounts in the late afternoon and early evening.

While the group supports lifting the restriction, it argues for a province-wide price minimum to prevent irresponsible practices like two-for-one, allyou-can-drink or women-drink-free offers.

The start to the South Delta Rams’ season was not without its challenges, but with the team’s third win in a row on Sunday, the local bantam football team appears to hit its stride.

The Rams are the defending bantam provincial champions, and this year’s squad features many returning players from last year’s team. One player who is missing, however, is quarterback Kyle Chase, who is out for the year with a broken elbow suffered in the off season.

“We had to change QBs at the 11th hour, so that’s been an adjustment,” says head coach Jeff von Ende.

Stepping into the pivot role this season has been Jacob Hampton, who von Ende says has improved steadily so far this season.

“He was our backup and hasn’t had a lot of experience,” said von Ende. “But he is doing really well. It’s really tough coming in at this level as a new quarterback, but he is getting better every game.”

Hampton and the Rams had little trouble knocking off the North Surrey Tigers by a score of 20-7 at Dennison Park last weekend to

improve to 3-2 this season.

After dropping their first two games by a combined 49-12, the Rams won three straight, outscoring their opponents 65-13.

While the Rams have been relying on the running game so far this season as Hampton gets up to speed, the team’s linemen have done a good job of providing protection for Hampton while opening up holes for running backs Michael Mann, Grant McDonald, and Stefanos Goulas.

“Our line is the strongest part of the team,” says von Ende. “It’s those big Ladner farm boys.”

Led by Wyatt Bates, Matt Ward, Ryan von Ende, David Edwards, and Evan Khara, the Rams’ linemen play both ways and each top six-feet tall.

Von Ende said receivers Alex Larocque, Cooper Jones, Charlie Moore, Takeshi Kimura, and Alec Patterson can expect to get more pass attempts thrown their way as the season progresses.

“We’re about 80 per cent of where we need to be,” he said. “But we’ve always been a team that starts out slow and finishes strong.”

The son of the man widely credited for Delta’s first Fraser River crossing into Richmond wants to see his father’s life work saved from demolition.

Doug Massey, a former municipal councillor, says he doesn’t want the new bridge renamed after his father, George Massey.

“It doesn’t reflect my father’s wishes or dreams,” he said.

FHA policy change costs hospital its art The walls where colourful paintings once hung in Delta Hospital are now bare, following an organization-wide policy change by Fraser Health regarding art.
