Staff noticed the copper piping was missing when the crawl space flooded.
theft closes elementary school by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District was forced to close Webster’s Corners elementary on Wednesday after part of its plumbing system was stolen. Staff for the school – at located at 25554 Dewdney Trunk Rd. – found that thieves went into the crawlspace under the school and stole copper piping. They only realized this after the crawlspace began to flood. Thieves broke into the crawlspace by cutting the lock off an exterior latch, then got away with approximately 17 metres (50 feet) of one-inch (2.5-centimetre) copper water line. The line was replaced Wednesday evening, and the school reopened in time for classes on Thursday. There was no final estimate on the costs of repairs. The district is looking at measures to better secure the crawlspace, but did not disclose details. Metal theft, which has seen phone lines stolen and plaques pried off monuments, has been on the wane in recent years. Municipal bylaws and new provincial regulations have created a system in which scrap metal dealers are required to take the name and contact information of someone selling them scrap metal, and report suspicious circumstances to police. A drop in scrap copper prices also helped curb thefts. It presently sits at about $2.75 per pound.

uttering threats, assault with a weapon and several firearms-related offences. He has been remanded in custody. RCMP said McKenna has a criminal record and is known to police. “This type of incident is not a common occurrence in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows, and police have treated this file as a top priority since it happened,” said Cpl. Alanna Dunlop. “Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has been working tirelessly on this serious incident
and it has resulted in the arrest of our prime suspect.” According to police, McKenna was escorted out of the pub by bouncers around 2 a.m. Sept. 29, but returned a short while later and fired a gun into a crowd of people gathered at the entrance. Two doormen were both injured in their lower legs. Police said they are still recovering from their injuries. RCMP executed a search warrant to aid the arrest of McKenna and seized several items as evidence.
