Five of six men executed in a Surrey apartment building in 2007 were killed to eliminate witnesses to the murder of a sixth man – and intended target – alleged the Crown on the opening day of trial for three men charged in the Surrey Six murders.

Le began Monday before a packed courtroom in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

They are charged in connection with the Oct. 19, 2007 mass murder of six men in the Balmoral Tower apartment building in North Surrey.

Two of the dead – 22-year-old Christopher Mohan of Surrey and 55-year-old Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford – were innocent victims, while the four others, Ryan Bartolomeo, Edward Narong, and brothers

Corey and Michael Lal, were gang members with ties to the drug trade who were known to police.

Schellenberg, 55, was repairing gas fire places in the building on the day of the murders, and Mohan lived in a neighbouring apartment.

After years in the works, residents will soon be able to commute from Chilliwack to Abbotsford to Langley, and beyond, by public bus.

The Fraser Valley Express bus was unanimously approved by the Fraser Valley Regional District at Tuesday’s board meeting through a new bylaw.

“I’m pretty excited about this particular connection because finally, that invisible border between TransLink and the rest of the world will be erased,” said director and Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman.

“There will be a way for people who want to get out of their cars to go to work will find a convenient way to do that … I think it’s been that missing link that the public has been asking for a long, long time.”

For the first time, a BC Transit bus will connect three municipalities with a combined population of 317,000.

BC Transit is estimating 136,800 passenger trips annually.

There will be a few stops in each municipality at key large centres, still to be worked out.

The Monday to Saturday service would run every 60 to 90 minutes during peak times, and 90 to 120 minutes off-peak.

In Langley, the route will stop at the Carvolth Transit Exchange, providing easy access to the SkyTrain via another express bus, as well as to neighbouring municipalities such as Surrey.

The Harrison Hot Springs– Agassiz–Chilliwack bus is “booming” in ridership and will receive an increase in service, according to Orfield.

The Mission–Abbotsford and Aldergrove–Abbotsford lines are also doing very well, as is the Mission connection of the West Coast Express.

A plan to connect Hope to Chilliwack and Agassiz is in the works.

The total annual cost for operating the six-bus service is $1.6 million. BC Transit will fund 47 per cent of the cost of the new route, with local municipalities kicking in the rest.

BC Transit is going ahead with vehicle procurement, determining a fare structure,

and finalizing routes and schedules.

Although it usually takes 18 months to purchase bus fleets, Orfield is optimistic that BC Transit will be able to get this system up and running by next September.

Part of the planning in Abbotsford is contingent on the results of the city’s current restructuring of the transit system.

“We’ll find a landing spot in Abbotsford for the loop …

The three accused pleaded not guilty to all of the charges on Monday.

In his opening state-

ment, lead Crown prosecutor Mark Levitz said Johnston, Le, and Haevischer were all part of the Red Scorpions gang whose primary objective was to traffic drugs and gain control over the Lower Mainland’s drug trade.

Corey Lal was a rival drug trafficker who was operating on

their turf, said Levitz.

He said the Balmoral Tower apartment was Lal’s “stash house” where drugs were cooked and large amounts of cash were kept.

Jamie Bacon of Abbotsford, also a Red Scorpion who is being tried separately in the case, demanded money from Lal, alleges Levitz. When

Lal didn’t deliver, the court was told Bacon and Le ordered Johnston, Haevischer, and another man (who cannot be identified under a publication ban), to murder Corey Lal. Levitz said the accused murderers gained entrance to the building through the parkade, using a fob given to Johnston

by another gang associate who also lived in the building.

Levitz said the evidence would show that the six deceased were found lying in the living room of apartment 1505. They were divided into two groups of three – one with Corey Lal, Narong and Schellenberg, and one with Michal

Lal, Bartolomeo and Mohan.

All were found sideby-side, face-down, Levitz said, except Michael Lal, and all suffered two or more gunshots to the head.

Levitz contended two handguns – a Glock and an Ultrastar – were used in the six murders and there were a total of 19 shots fired. He also

argued the victims were forcibly confined and had their heads covered when they were killed and that the evidence will show there was “obvious planning and deliberation” before the shots were fired.

Outside court, Eileen Mohan, mother of innocent victim Chris Mohan, said being in court and hearing new details of her son’s murder is extremely difficult.

“I wish I wasn’t here and Christopher was here with me, but I have to see this through,” she said.

In court, the three accused sat sideby-side in separate Plexiglas prisoner boxes. All were welldressed and listened carefully to the court proceedings. Le took notes.

Mohan sat on the opposite side of the courtroom gallery from the three accused men.

“I don’t think they warranted my presence,” she said.

“Honestly, I felt they were non-existent.”

The trial, being heard by Madam Justice Catherine Wedge, is expected to take as long as one year, and involves between eight and nine Crown prosecutors and approximately nine defence lawyers.

Warm Zone finds a home

The Warm Zone drop-in centre for women has found a new home.

Staff and volunteers have packed up and moved from the old location on McCallum Road, and have set up at their new place.

Warm Zone co-ordinator Michele Giordano did not want to disclose the location, because of clients’ safety concerns, but said it is accessible to the downtown core.

She said the site is zoned for the work the Warm Zone does, is about twice the size of the current location, and allows for a year-to-year lease.

“We’re really, really excited …

I was feeling full of dread imagining the Warm Zone closing,” Giordano said.

The Warm Zone is operated by the Women’s Resource Society

of the Fraser Valley. Executive director Dorothy Henneveld said partial services will be offered at the new location by the end of the week.

Henneveld said the standalone building was found as part of the society’s search to find a new site available for lease. The final paperwork was signed on Thursday.

The drop-in centre is open to “street entrenched” women, providing a place where they can escape the dangers of the streets, get a meal, take a shower, do laundry and access services.

Giordano said finding a new location was a challenge.

The centre had to be out of its former building by Sept. 30 after the landlord asked them to leave.

But Giordano said most landlords required the signing of a three- to five-year lease – something the Warm Zone couldn’t

do, because of uncertainty about its annual funding situation.

Another factor was trying to find a location that was in the proper zoning and close to other services, such as the Salvation Army and Abbotsford Community Services. The new site meets all the criteria.

The Warm Zone was also facing uncertainty about its funding situation, but Henneveld said it looks like two essential grants will be approved to keep the facility running for another year.

The new building is in need of renovations, including a full kitchen and a bathroom with a shower.

Henneveld and Giordano hope that donations of skilled labour and materials will help fulfill those requirements. Anyone who can help can call 604-8208455 and leave a message for Michele.

Two Abbotsford men have pleaded guilty to charges of possession of child pornography and are scheduled to be sentenced in February.

Sean Joshua Leblanc, 22, initially faced three charges after his arrest in May of this year. In addition to the possession charge, he faced charges of importing/ distributing child porn and luring a person under the age of 16.

His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 19 in Abbotsford provincial court on the possession charge.

Leblanc was arrested following an investigation that involved both Canadian and U.S. authorities and the execution of a search warrant at his Abbotsford residence.

Leblanc was arrested again on Aug. 30 for allegedly breaching his bail conditions.

Conditions of his release included that he not possess any device that could connect to the Internet and that he not attend parks, daycares, community centres or other place

where a person under 16 could be present.

Leblanc was allegedly found in possession of a cellphone and was located by police in the parking lot of a church that also runs a daycare facility.

Leblanc was released from custody on $5,000 bail and is next ex-

pected to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on the breach charges on Oct. 21.

Meanwhile, another Abbotsford man, Chad Marcus Loeppky, 35, is scheduled for a sentencing hearing on Feb. 21. He pleaded guilty on Sept. 24 to possessing child pornography.

On Friday, at about 12:30 p.m., a woman who lives on Old Yale Road was in the shower when she heard a strange noise.

There was no forced entry.

While nothing was missing, MacDonald called the incident disturbing.

In 2011, the median amount of charitable donations in Abbotsford-Mission was $630, the highest median rate in Canada. The national level is $260 and the provincial level is $370.

Respondents were asked what the most important issues facing Abbotsford today, with 18 per cent stating it was cost of living, 17 per cent stating

employment opportunities, 10 per cent stating homelessness.

When asked about the best thing about Abbotsford, 25 per cent said the natural environment, followed by sense of community with 16 per cent.

Abbotsford is among more than 20 community foundations across Canada that produced a Vital Sign report.

Long-awaited alternative Most people reacted with relief when a public bus connecting Abbotsford to its biggest neighbours, Langley and Chilliwack, was finally green-lighted last week.

The project has been a top priority for the city for years. It requires so many different and often diverging pieces of a puzzle to come together – three separate municipalities, an overarching regional district, BC Transit, the provincial government, and public opinion – that it was easy to doubt it would ever happen.

Now that the Fraser Valley Regional District has granted approval, it is up to Abbotsford and Chilliwack to find the funds. To do so, the cities must determine what to charge riders, and how much to extract from the public purse.

And when the long-awaited Fraser Valley Express bus arrives, will it change how people travel?

Less than three per cent of Abbotsford’s residents commute by public transit every day. That’s about the same as the

percentage that walk to work.

Public consultations by BC Transit revealed that Fraser Valley residents really want an easier way to get to Vancouver.

The end point of the new subregional bus will be the Carvolth Exchange in Langley. From there, it’s a direct non-stop bus to the Braid SkyTrain station.

Cost is a big factor in whether the service actually displaces some cars from the Trans-Canada highway. The new bus is on a BC Transit system, while Langley and Vancouver are on TransLink.

That means two separate fares for those wanting to ride all the way. The whole trip would need to be cheaper and faster than Greyhound’s current $12.50 for the minimum 70-minute journey.

Nevertheless, at least local travel should be easier. A 30-minute bus ride from Abbotsford to either Langley or Chilliwack – the budgeted travel time for the new express bus – doesn’t sound so bad when compared to pouring yet another $100 into the tank.

Other Hand I’m not certain age brings wisdom so much as the realization that the body is no longer up to spending a weekend in a sodden tent, protected from the lashing wind and torrential rain with little more than a plastic tarp strung between a couple of trees.

While there’s nothing like a campfire to make the backcountry palatable, one in which more time is spent ensuring the flames aren’t doused in the downpour, and the resultant smoke constantly stinging the eyes, is no longer my cup of rum in the camp chair.

Common sense, fortunately, took precedence over the proposal to hit the high country despite the temptingly glorious weather last week.

The suggestion for a few days in the woods came Wednesday, and was seriously considered even though I was aware of the impend-

ing storms. Thursday brought, along with bluebird skies, a further warning that the weekend would be a mess. Despite my friend suggesting it wasn’t in us to “wimp out” to weather, I suggested observance of forecasts provided by The Weather Network. He also keyed up Environment Canada’s site.

It was agreed that things didn’t look so good . . . “but let’s wait until Friday morning” was determined.

Needless to say for anyone who was in the Fraser Valley on Friday, the message was clear. Too wet, with lots more to come.

What really iced the cake was a check of the BC Highway cams along the Coquihalla.

These provide ‘real time’ information on current weather, and the view from the unit at the highway summit was completely obscured by rain on the lens. Enough said, or seen, and thankfully, the ‘adventure’ was postponed to a more appropriate, and pleasant weatherwise, time.

Saturday, as I was sitting by a roaring blaze in the fireplace, vicariously living the campfire experience and watching wind-driven clouds roar through the forest to the south of me, pushing sheets of rain almost parallel to the ground, the phone rang.

“Well, we sure dodged a bullet,” comment-

ed my friend from the comfort of his own home.

“No kidding” said I as the deluge beat down on the roof, the water cascading over the gutters.

It had died on local city streets on Saturday afternoon. It was currently residing, following a tow truck ride, at the dealership awaiting repair on Monday.

tant bush, I think only I would have ‘dodged a bullet’ . . . my hapless hunting buddy perhaps not so.

I have spent countless days, and thousands of miles/kilometers, on trips so far into the bush that towing fees, if even possible, to recover the vehicle could be more than what it was worth. Luckily, I’ve never had a catastrophic engine failure, or an inability to extricate the truck from wherever I’ve ventured.

But obviously something completely unexpected, such as happened to my buddy’s truck, can occur.

I trust that experience, and a decent pair of boots, could get me out of any mess but you never know, particularly if the weather and winter was even more severe than what we have experienced over the past couple of days.

Am I happy that the fire I sat by this weekend was in my house rather than before a wet tent? Oh, yeahhh.

But will I risk possible calamity in the future in pursuit of semi-solitude in B.C.’s incomparable backcountry? In a heartbeat, because risk is part of the adventure, so long as it’s not undertaken in a downpour.

Currently, if you are on the West Coast Express and you miss your stop (not all that uncommon), you are literally screwed to try and get back into Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, or any other location to the west. Â Even with this new bus service, getting to Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows is going to be excruciating. Pathetic!

If we are really supposed to get out of our cars, how about making it possible? Â Then we can get into the cost. Seriously, the West Coast Express costs me over $300 a month and over three hours a day between waiting and travelling. I can do this in my car for less cost financially as well as saving my time. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t work weekends unless I drive. Oh, and even with this new bus service, you are screwed on a Sunday.

Not everybody works 9-5 Monday to Friday, people. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not get started on the fiasco this Compass card and tap-in and out is going to be. Never mind the conveniences TransLink is removing from us.

They even had the audacity to state that they brought in all these money-saving features and conveniences to increase ridership and now that they have done what was intended, they are removing them. Really? Howâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that for respect and thanks? With that kind of attitude, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m better off driving.

Can we actually get some real service, please? If they really want us to take transit, they are going about it the wrong way. Â Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been riding the West Coast Express for six years and am going to be in my car next year. Â Thanks, TransLink!

Hundreds of alumni came streaming through Robert Bateman Secondary on Saturday to celebrate the school’s 20th anniversary.

The festivities included tours of the facility, alumni basketball and rugby games, and a barbecue. In the evening, there was a dance and silent auction in support of the school’s outdoor classroom.

On Friday, Robert Bateman – the renowned wildlife artist and naturalist – was at his namesake school for a series of assemblies with students to mark the occasion.

“It was really motivational for our kids,” said Linda Pollastretti, the school’s vice-principal.

“His sort of paradigm is, he wants kids to be one with nature.

“The kids were talking about it all afternoon.”

For Steve Carlton, the anniversary celebration felt a little bit like a family reunion.

Carlton, currently the assistant superintendent of schools in the Abbotsford School District, was the first principal at Bateman and held the post for 10 years.

“Coming back this week, it’s kind of like seeing how it all turned out,” he said with a smile.

“And how’s it going, 20 years later? Better than we could have imagined.”

Launching Bateman Secondary was a project close to Carlton’s heart. As a teen growing up in Burlington, Ont., he attended the same high school where Bateman, prior to his rise to fame, served as an art and geography teacher.

Years later, Carlton was in his second year as principal at W.J. Mouat Secondary when the school board decided to name the new high school in northeast Abbotsford after Bateman

– a nod to the campus’s proximity to Bateman Road.

“I applied, and the board said, ‘Why would you want that job? You’re already the principal of a big school,’” Carlton recalled. “I said, ‘I don’t really want to leave Mouat, but I really do want to work with Robert Bateman and cultivate that relationship.’”

The school’s namesake artist had a great deal of influence on the building design and philosophy of the school. His painting “Clear Night - Wolves” inspired the choice of both the Timberwolves mascot and logo, and the school’s motto: Eye to eye with respect.

Bateman also designed and built the wa-

terfall that greets visitors inside the main entry.

“His notion was, as soon as you’d enter the school, you’d have an experience with art,” Carlton explained.

“He created that (waterfall) – he mortared it, he cemented it. I carried the rock.”

Carlton still rates spearheading the startup of Bateman Secondary as his greatest career highlight, and the school honoured him on Friday by naming their track and football field “Carlton Oval” after him.

“It’s probably a sign that you should retire when they start naming things after you,” he joked.

Abbotsford is one of nine communities in B.C. taking part in the CIBC Run for the Cure on Sunday, Oct. 6.

The local event takes place at Rotary Stadium (corner of Trethewey and Maclure), with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m., followed by the walk at 10 a.m.

The annual event raises funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in support of breast cancer research and education initiatives.

The walk/run offers a choice of two distances – one km or five km.

Last year in Abbotsford, the Run for the Cure raised almost $339,000 from approximately 1,800 participants.

Abbotsford has been participating in the event since 2000, raising a total of $2.96 million in that time.

Abbotsford run director Susan Johnston said the event is “inspiring.”

“Whether you are participating as a survivor, running for a love one or a friend, or just there to support the cause, it’s an emotional and powerful event that brings people together with a common goal of a future without breast cancer,” she said.

In anticipation of what may lay ahead for our community, the Abbotsford Community Foundation made the decision to participate in Vital Signs®, a program of the Community Foundations of Canada, the national membership organization for more than 190 community foundations across the country.

Vital Signs® is an annual community check-up conducted by community foundations across Canada that measures the vitality of our communities, identifies issues and trends, and provides citizens with an opportunity to assign grades in a range of areas critical to our quality of life. It is this local focus that gives Vital Signs® its power. CSURVEY GRADE

INDICATOR SELECTION As part of a national initiative of 26 community foundations publishing Vital Signs reports, we agreed to publish a set of common indicators for cross-country comparisons. Overall, there are twelve areas of interest in the Vital Signs projects plus Food Security. However, since Abbotsford Community Foundation is participating in this process for the first time, it was decided that six areas of interest would be selected.

We used existing data collected from a variety of national, provincial and local sources.

GEOGRAPHIC SCOPE Much of the data cited in this report is available at the Abbotsford-Mission Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), and at the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) level.

GRADING Many of the indicators used in Abbotsford’s Vital Signs project have been graded by local citizens. The idea was to capture people’s views on issues within the region and then to include these with available data to compare perceptions with realty and identify Abbotsford’s strengths and weaknesses. What is working well in our community and what needs improvement.

Grading was done through an on-line survey in August and September. 330 surveys were completed.

GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR Gap between annual minimum wages and “living wages” over $22,000 for family of four with two working parents LIVING WAGE IN THE FRASER VALLEY In 2013, the living wage for the Fraser Valley was calculated at $16.37 per hour. This calculation is based on two adults working 35 hours each per week while providing a home for two children. This would provide for a household income (before tax) of $59,569 per year to meet basic expenses. The current provincial wage is $10.25 per hour for which the same family would only earn $37,310 per year (before tax).

OVERALL POVERTY RATE RISES SLIGHTLY In 2010, the overall poverty rate in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA), based on the Low Income Measure (LIM)2 after tax, an indicator of relative poverty, was 19%. This was up slightly from 18.9% in 2009. The 2010 figure is higher than the national average of 17.8% and lower than the provincial average of 19.6%.

CHILD (0-17) POVERTY RATE FALLS SLIGHTLY In 2010, the child poverty rate in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA), based on the LIM, was 20.3%. This was down slightly 20.8% in 2009. The 2010 figure was higher than the national average of 18.9% and lower than the provincial average of 21.7%.

ELDERLY (65+) POVERTY RATE INCHES UP In 2010, the elderly poverty rate in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA), based on the LIM, was 8.3%. This was up slightly from 8.1% in 2009. The 2010 figure is higher than the national average of 7.7% and the same as the provincial average of 8.3% POVERTY RATE OF SINGLE-PARENT FAMILIES Based on the Low Income Measure (LIM), After Tax. In 2010, the poverty rate of single-parent families in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA), based on the LIM, was 38.7 per cent, down 0.8 per cent from 39.4 per cent in 2009. The 2010 figure was higher than the national average (31.7 per cent) and higher than the provincial average (34.9).

Abbotsford is slightly more affordable for tenants and owners than the CMA. However, while the percentage of owners spending 30% or more is on par with the province it is higher than the national level. This may reflect the higher cost of homes in BC.

In the City of Abbotsford, 24% of owner households and 39% of tenant households spend more than 30% of their income on shelter costs.

HOMELESSNESS COUNT 2005-2011 Fraser Valley Homeless Count. In 2005, the homelessness count in Abbotsford was 226. Abbotsford recorded 235 people in 2008 and 117 in 2011 which is a decrease of 50%. This compares to Mission with 100 people counted in 2008 and 54 in 2011which is a decrease of 46%. The next homeless count is planned for 2014.

For the Abbotsford-Mission (CMA), the percentages are only slightly higher with 25.5% of owners and 40% of tenants spending more than 30% of income on shelter costs.

RENTAL VACANCY RATES (%) 2007-2010 In the Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) in 2012, the rental vacancy rate of two bedroom apartments was 3.9 per cent, higher than the average for all CMAs (2.2 per cent). The rental vacancy rate was down from 5.8 per cent in 2011.

This was 0.2 percentage points above the national youth unemployment rate of 14.3 per cent and 1.3 percentage points above the provincial average of 13.2 per cent. The youth unemployment rate has increased 1.0 percentage points from 13.5 per cent in 2011.

TOTAL PHYSICIANS PER 100,000 PEOPLE In 2011, there were 139 physicians per 100,000 Fraser East (HSDA) residents. This rate is lower than the national rate (209 physicians per 100,000 people) and was an increase of 8.6 per cent from 128 physicians per 100,000 people in 2002.

Of those 40,245 (85% of census families) are couple families (both married and common-law). 45% of the couple families have children at home. 55% of couple families do not have children at home. AVERAGE COST OF UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE TUITION In the 2012 to 2013 academic year, the average cost of undergraduate tuition in Abbotsford (University of the Fraser Valley) was $3,864 for Canadian students and $12,720 for International Students. The average tuition cost in BC for Canadian students was $5,586 and in Canada $4,931.

MEDIAN AGE at 38.2 years, the median age in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) in 2011 increased by 2.8 years from a median age of 35.4 in 2001. The median age was lower than the national level (40.6 years) and the provincial level (41.9 years).

MIGRATION In Abbotsford-Mission (CMA), 1.58 per cent of the population (2,610 persons) in 2011 had lived outside the province, territory or country within the previous 12 months, compared to 1.68 per cent for Canada and 1.19 per cent in British Columbia. In Abbotsford, 6.04 per cent of the 2011 population lived outside the province, territory or country within the last 5 years, compared to 6.64 per cent in Canada and 9.25 per cent in British Columbia.

In 2011, the population of the City of Abbotsford (Census sub-division) was 133,497. In 20061, the population was 124,258. The population has risen 7.4% in 5 years. Population density is 355.5 per square kilometer.

CHILD CARE SPACES AND COST In Abbotsford for 2012, there were 1597 licensed child care spaces with 1166 designated specifically for children under the age of 5 in 117 daycare facilities. According to the 2011 census, there were 8,530 children in Abbotsford between the ages of 0-4. Fees for spaces are usually between $600-$900 per month, depending on the type of daycare provided.

Some group centers charge $900 and up. These rates are for full time care in Abbotsford for toddlers and preschool aged children. Part time rates would be relative to the full time rates.

AVERAGE UNIVERSITY ENROLLMENT In the 2011 to 2012 academic year, the average undergraduate enrollment in Abbotsford (University of the Fraser Valley) for full-time students was 5,800 and 2,190 for part-time students.

These include Abbotsford Health Protection Office, Abbotsford Home Health Office, Abbotsford Mental Health Office, Abbotsford Public Health Unit and Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. There are at least 19 other organizations (both public and private) that contribute to health promotion in Abbotsford.

LIFE EXPECTANCY AT BIRTH On a 3 year average between 2007 and 2009, Fraser East (HSDA) had a life expectancy of 80.6 years, 0.62 per cent lower than the national life expectancy (81.1). Life expectancy in Fraser East (HSDA) has increased by 1.9 years from 78.7 years in 1997.

SHARE OF YOUTH (UNDER 15) IN POPULATION (POST-CENSAL ESTIMATES) On July 1, 2012, youth and children aged under 15 in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) constituted 18.1 per cent of the total population. This was a 3.2 percentage point decrease from 21.3 per cent in 2001. This share was greater than the national share (12.0%) and the provincial share (14.8%).

SHARE OF ELDERLY (65 AND OVER) IN POPULATION (POST-CENSAL ESTIMATES) On July 1, 2012, the elderly in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) constituted 14.5 per cent of the total population.

This was a 0.8 percentage point increase from 13.7 per cent in 2001. This share was below the national share (14.9%) and provincial share (15.9%).

MEDIAN (CENSUS) FAMILY TOTAL INCOME: In 2010, in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) the median total family income was $62,320. This level is below the national median income for families of $69,320 and the provincial level of $66,970.

PROPORTION OF POPULATION CLASSIFIED AS A VISIBLE MINORITY for Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) and the City of Abbotsford using 2011 Census data.

In 2011, 25.5 per cent of the population in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) were classified as a visible minority, up 7.7 percentage points from 17.8 per cent in 2001. The proportion of the population classified as visible minorities in Abbotsford (CMA) was higher than the national proportion of (19.1%) and lower than the provincial proportion (27.3%) in 2011.

In 2011, 29.6 per cent of the population in the City of Abbotsford were classified as a visible minority, up 9.2 percentage points from 20.4 per cent in 2001. The proportion of the population classified as visible minorities in Abbotsford was higher than the national proportion (19.1%) and higher than the provincial proportion (27.3%) in 2011.

This compares to all students in the public schools for the province at 80.3% and to Mission district at 77.1% and Chilliwack district at 71.6%.

PERCENT OF TAX FILERS MAKING CHARITABLE DONATIONS In 2011, the per cent of tax filers in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) who were charitable donors was 21.6 per cent. This figure is lower than the national level (23.0 per cent) and slightly lower than the provincial level (21.7). The percent of tax filers making charitable donations decreased 0.4 percentage points from 22.0 per cent in 2010.

MEDIAN CHARITABLE DONATIONS In 2011, the median amount of charitable donations in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) was $630. This amount is higher than the national level ($260) and the provincial level ($370). The median amount of charitable donations increased from $620 in 2010.

This is the highest median rate in Canada.

VOLUNTEER RATE In 2010, the volunteer rate for Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) was 52.0 per cent. This figure is higher than the national level (47.0 per cent) and higher than the provincial level (46.6). The volunteer rate increased 6.8 percentage points from 45.2 per cent in 2007.

PERCENTAGE VOTER TURNOUT FOR 2008 AND 2011 FEDERAL ELECTIONS In 2011, the voter turnout in Abbotsford-Mission (CMA) was 59.0 per cent. This figure is lower than the national level (61.1 per cent) and lower than the provincial level of voter turnout (60.4 per cent).

The voter turnout decreased 0.5 percentage points from 59.5 per cent in 2008.

POPULATION REPORTING A STRONG OR SOMEWHAT STRONG SENSE OF COMMUNITY BELONGING In 2012 in the Fraser East Health Service Delivery Area (which includes Abbotsord-Mission (CMA), 65.6 per cent of people aged 12 and over reported a strong or somewhat strong sense of community belonging, higher than the 2011 level of 60.6 per cent. The 2012 level was lower than the national average of 66.1 per cent, and lower than the provincial average of 67.6 per cent.

LIFE SATISFACTION: PERCENTAGE (AGED 12+) SATISFIED AND VERY SATISFIED In 2012 in the Fraser East Health Service Delivery Area (which includes Abbotsford-Mission (CMA)), 89.2 per cent of people responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied with their overall life, a decrease from the 2011 level of 89.8 per cent. The 2012 level is lower than the national average of 92.4 per cent and lower than the provincial average of 91.0 per cent.

A local veteran’s group will receive a tax break for $3,500 in 2014, but requests from other community groups were denied by city council on Monday.

BC Teen Challenge, Creative Centre Rehabilitation, Visionquest Recovery Society, and a new property of Abbotsford Community Services (ACS) will not receive exemptions, which would have totalled $40,000.

Each year the city allows exemptions for groups that qualify under categories such as not-for-profit organizations, local government, athletic or service clubs and religious, private schools or revitalization.

The city has no formal policy for notfor-profit exemptions, but breaks have been granted in the past for organizations including ACS, MCC, the Northview Community Church, Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 15 and the Salvation Army.

Coun. John Smith said the A.N.A.F. Veterans in Canada’s should be granted a tax exemption, much like the Legion.

Last year, council denied their request. At that time, Coun. Henry Braun said allowing an exemption for one group is “picking winners and losers” – a point he reiterated on Monday.

Battling their way through a stacked field to pick up a silver medal at their home tournament represented an excellent start to the season for the Mennonite Educational Institute senior boys volleyball team.

The 12-team event featured B.C.’s top four ranked AAA teams and the top three AA squads, along with a pair of elite out-ofprovince teams in the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute Hawks of Winnipeg and the Grande Prairie (Alta.) Tomahawks.

The host Eagles made it through round robin play unscathed, going 5-0, and they knocked off MBCI – the defending Manitoba AAAA champ – in three sets in the semifinals on Saturday.

MEI finally met its match in the title game,

as they fell in two sets (25-22, 28-26) to the Kelowna Owls, B.C.’s No. 2-ranked AAA squad.

“It was just incredible to be playing a high calibre of volleyball in pool play and playoffs, the whole way through,” Eagles coach Jordan Geransky said.

“It’s good to know that the work we did in the summer and the work we did in the preseason is applying really well to the court. We would have loved to have won the Kelowna game, and if a few things had gone a little differently, we might have. But it’s a good vote of confidence that we’re headed in the right direction.”

The Abbotsford Heat received one last preseason infusion of talent from the Calgary Flames on Monday, as the NHL parent club reassigned four players: forwards Roman Horak and Blair Jones, defenceman Patrick Sieloff and goalie Reto Berra.

The two forwards are both familiar to local fans – Horak spent parts of the last two campaigns in Abbotsford, while Jones was sent to the Heat midway through last season.

Sieloff is entering his first pro campaign, while Swiss keeper Berra is making his debut in North America.

The moves leave the Heat with 31 players in camp, and cuts will be coming before the team hits the road on Wednesday for its regular season opener vs. the Lake Erie Monsters.

Over the first month of the high school football season, the Rick Hansen Hurricanes have shown that they can play a little defence.

Or more to the point, a lot of defence.

On Friday, B.C.’s No. 5-ranked AA squad blanked the G.W. Graham Grizzlies 23-0 on the road in Chilliwack, marking their second straight shutout win. The previous week, Hansen beat the Bateman T-Wolves 16-0.

Twin brothers Brandon (nine tackles, two sacks) and Alex Ho (six tackles) excelled from their linebacking spots, as did safety Zach Toews (nine tackles) and lineman Shaiheem CharlesBrown (seven tackles).

BATEMAN 35, SAMUEL ROBERTSON 0 Bateman, coming off the deflating loss to Hansen, took out their frustrations on the Samuel Robertson Technical Titans in Maple Ridge on Friday.

Daniel Mills threw for 238 yards and three TDs – two to Tanner Friesen and one to Ben Cummings, who added 150 rushing yards and two more majors on the ground.

Irons managed 115 rushing yards with a pair of TDs, while QB Hunter Struthers threw for a TD to Manpreet Chhina.

There are few cities in Canada where wrestling is more popular than it is in Abbotsford, and the University of the Fraser Valley athletic department is set to capitalize on that.

On Monday, the Canada West conference approved the Cascades’ bid to add men’s and women’s wrestling to their list of varsity offerings.

UFV will begin competing in 2014, and becomes the first B.C. wrestling school in Canada West since Simon Fraser University left to join the NCAA following the 2009-10 season.

Cascades athletic director Rocky Olfert said the sport’s local popularity made it a “natural fit.”

“Wrestling opens many doors and opportunities for us in our community,” he said.

UFV has had a nonvarsity wrestling club on campus for several years, comprising about 20 athletes. Olfert said his department and the

club have been working together in order to gain Canada West approval.

Arjan Bhullar and Raj Virdi have been hired as UFV’s first varsity wrestling coaches. Both were CIS champions during their careers at SFU, and Richmond native Bhullar wrestled at the 2012 London Olympics.

UFV’s addition of another varsity sport is an eyebrow-raiser, considering that as recently as the 2011-12 season, the volleyball, golf and rowing programs were on the chopping block due to funding issues.

But Olfert, who was hired as athletic director in June 2012, said the wrestling budget will be fundraised, and would not draw money away from the existing teams.

“Different wrestling clubs have been able to help us on the equipment side and get some start-up dollars,” he said.

“And our advancement department ... has been really helpful with identifying a plan we can put in place to fundraise.”

The Abbotsford Pilots suffered a minor earlyseason stumble, picking up just one of a possible four points last week.

The local junior B hockey club had to rally to salvage that point, coming back from a two-goal third-period deficit to tie the Mission City Outlaws on Thursday. Colton Cowden scored twice for

the Pilots, and Braeden Monk and Kolten Grieve added singles.

On Friday at MSA Arena, the Pilots fell 6-2 to the Richmond Sockeyes, with Brad Parker and Eric Wieking scoring the Abby goals.

Russell passed into the presence of our Lord on September 25, 2013 at the age of 84 at Abbotsford Hospital. Russell was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Victoria, BC with his mom, two sisters and brother.

Russell met Betty, his wife of 57 years in Victoria and they were married in 1955. They spent the majority of their life in Burnaby. Russell is predeceased by his wife Betty on July 8, 2012 and is survived by his children, Joanne (Don) Blaak, Russell Junior (Antoinette) and Adele (Alan), six grandchildren and one great grandson. He is also survived by his brother David and sisters Doris and Jean.

Russell was a devoted husband and family man who loved to play golf, collect stamps, read and was a man of great faith. Russell’s life was full and rich and he will never be forgotten.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2597 Bourquin Crescent East, Abbotsford followed by burial at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery.

SCHMIDTKE Stephanie Lynn Mary Stephanie Lynn Mary Schmidtke

born on August 3, 1992 was Abbotsford’s BC Day baby that year. On September 24, 2013 at the age of 21, Stephanie passed away in a tragic car accident. Stephanie was an angel on earth who impacted countless lives with her enthusiasm, optimism and heart for her Lord that she shared openly and honestly. Stephie leaves behind her mom and dad Evan and Shelley Schmidtke; her older brother Kristopher Schmidtke; grandmother Lynn Smith; grandparents Paul and Darleen Schmidtke as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, many friends and the love of her life Nicholas Goertz. Stephie had a passion for people and was finishing her 3rd year in the Bachelor of Nursing program at MacEwan University. She had been looking forward to using these skills overseas to make a difference in helping others. A Celebration of Stephanie’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 22550 Township Road, Sherwood Park, AB. THIESSEN, Frank 1926 - 2013 Frank Thiessen passed suddenly into the presence of his Lord on September 25, 2013 at the age of 86. He was predeceased by 3 brothers John, Waldo and Nicholas. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years Margaret, by 4 children Ernest, Allen, Carol, and Lester, by 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Frank’s younger siblings Jacob, Henry, Mary, Margaret, and Art also survive him.

In 1964, Frank established what became the Valley Driving School in Abbotsford and operated it for 17 years. He loved wildlife, playing chess, and playing the harmonica. At age 85 Frank was featured playing the harmonica at the Abby Arts Centre in a Fraser Valley Talent Show. A memorial service for Frank was held on Tuesday, October 1st at Grace Evangelical Bible Church, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Frank’s memory to MCC. Turra Mr. Antonio (Tony) Turra late of Abbotsford, BC passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by his family, on September, 27, 2013 at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife, Maria; sons, Alfonso (Martene), Ernie (Ilona), Carlo (Tracey); grandchildren, Christopher (Anne), Anthony (Karen), Chad (Frankie), Dominique, Trevor, Hayley; great grandchildren, Dane & Reisling; sisters, Teresina, Angela, Giacomina; and many relatives in Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, France, USA and Canada. He was predeceased by his parents, Massimiliano & Maria. Antonio was born in Semonzo Del Grappa, Italy; a twin, he was the third of four children. He immigrated to Canada in 1952 and was joined by his wife, Maria in 1955. He so loved his new home, Canada, and their little farm. Initially, Antonio worked in the logging industry in Kelsey Bay, Vancouver Island, and then Harrison Lake. He subsequently moved to Abbotsford, worked at Dairyland for 37 years and retired in 1993. He was an honest, strong, determined, big-hearted man always with a twinkle in his eye. Proud of his heritage, Antonio was also a member of the Bellunesi Nel Modo. He loved the outdoors; hunting, hiking, gardening, pruning his grapes and wine making. He also enjoyed geography, reading, word searches and spending time with his family and friends – particularly his grandchildren. He loved his family dearly and was a devoted brother, husband, father and Nonno. He will be very sadly missed by all who knew him and his lasting legacy is his love of life, devotion of family, and faith in the Lord Jesus. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, care staff and friends at the Worthington Pavilion for their kindness, gentleness and loving care. Prayers will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 7:00 pm at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 33333 Mayfair Avenue, Abbotsford, BC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 10:30 am at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery.
