Mega fun There were smiles all around as youngsters crawled on top of a parachute trying to capture the ‘mouse’ who was scampering underneath them during the town organized fall festival at Centennial Park Saturday afternoon.

Other activities included potato sack races, mini golf, tug of war, pumpkin painting, bean bag toss, piano mat, leaf crafts, balloon animals, pumpkin playdough, a caricature artist and bouncers. Three seeking mayor’s position 10 running for councillor’s jobs

Breaking records - Tim Hortons annual Smile cookie campaign got off to a good start Monday with $1,421 raised for Sylvan Lake & Area Urgent Care Committee’s initiatives. Committee members Klaas Van Veller and Susan Samson were joined Tuesday morning by cookie maker extraordinaire Juni Lyn Taguinod and Tim Hortons owner John Paul Doucette to hand out information on progress towards an urgent care centre. All money raised through the cookie campaign is being donated to the initiative.

Kreil, Stephenson among Lacombe County councillors acclaimed

Four of seven Lacombe County councillors won’t be campaigning this fall after they were acclaimed to their positions when nominations closed Monday at noon.

Dana Kreil (Division 7), Keith Stephenson (Division 6), Ken Wigmore (Division 5) and Paula Law (Division 4) were all acclaimed since they were the only candidates to file nomination papers for their divisions. All are current councillors.

Kreil will be entering her second term, Stephenson his third term, Wigmore his fourth term and Law her second term. Stephenson was the only councillor acclaimed in

2010.

At the east end of the county, four term Division 1 councillor Rod McDermand is being challenged by Ossie Eggenschwiler. Division 2 councillor Brenda Knight is running against Stephen Holt and Tony Jeglum to retain her position. Knight is seeking her second term.

The only incumbent stepping down is Cliff Soper who has represented Division 3. Running for that position are David Powell and Barb Shepherd.

Elections in the three contested divisions take place Oct. 21.

Lacombe County’s reeve is selected by the winning councillors at an organizational meeting following the election. Ken Wigmore has held that position during the past term.

A third candidate has entered the race to become Sylvan Lake’s next mayor.

At the close of nominations Monday, Sean McIntyre, Susan Samson and Melesa Starcheski had filed papers vying for the town’s top elected position.

Another candidate for council joined those already announced who filed papers bringing the total to ten people seeking six positions around the decision-making table.

Campaigning for councillor positions are Megan Chernoff, Neil Evans, Charlie Everest, Rick Grimson, Christina Lust, Graham Parsons, David (Jas) Payne, Dale Plante, Matt Prete and Wendy Sauvageau.

Returning officer Pam Marchesi said there’s a new requirement during this election. Voters will have to provide identification when they register to vote.

The most commonly accepted piece of identification will likely be a driver’s license but Marchesi said there’s a whole list of other identification which will also be accepted. The list is available on the town’s website and will appear in ‘notice of election’ advertising.

Producing identification is one more step in the process for voters. She said they’ll show up at the polling station in the community centre, will register to vote, sign stating they are an eligible elector and provide their ID. “It’s an added step to the process we’ve always done.”

Election day is Monday, October 21 and polls will be continuously open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the community centre, 4725 43 Street.

Advance polls will be offered for citizens not able to visit the polling station on election day, according to the town’s website.

Since 2009/2010 this council has spent approximately $45 million. By their own accounting: $7.5 million for the RCMP building, $22 million for Lakeshore Drive redevelopment, $8 million for the new civic administration building, $3 million for the new public works building and another $4.5 million for the new fire hall.

They have already borrowed $6.5 million for the RCMP building and $3.3 million for the fire hall, as well having used $25.3 million in reserves.

As reported in the Sylvan Lake News an additional $10 million will be borrowed in 2014 for the multiplex which will require another $10 million to finish the project and another $2 million for

We all should be aware that the Lakeshore Drive/Centennial Park project, while costing $23,630,000 to date, was not strictly paid for by grants given exclusively for this project by the province or federal government. The grants used to fast track this project could instead have been used to build a spray park, update the curling rink, for new roads and sidewalks or many other needs and wants of our community. I’m not saying that this was not a good use of taxpayer money, but shouldn’t we have been told that’s where this council’s priorities were? Were you aware that the next council will have to borrow even more money to pay for those facilities, parks and roads that you determine are a priority?

While large commercial projects have declined from the last two years, permits covered additions and renovations to existing buildings.

Why no berm and fence along Hewlett Park’s Highway 20 frontage

More a factor of low sand than high water Dear Editor, Regarding the photo from 1988 accompanying Dale Mannix letter in Sept. 19 paper.

A beautiful beach full of sand! I would like to point out something in the photo. If you look in the background at the wall behind the sand, you can see that the sand level is just under the second step on the stairs. So visualize with me, grass, one step, two step, sand! Not, grass, one step, two step, splash, step, step, step, sand …

Yes the water level is higher than in the past. Yes, if I was lucky enough to own property on the beach the natural erosion, and natural cycle of high and low seasons would be on my mind. However in regard to the beach itself, I feel although the high water is a huge factor, it is less about high water, and more about low sand.

Does no one else remember the large construction equipment that used to dig out the entire swimming area and dump all that sand back up on the beach each spring? Ice in the winter, and waves in the summer all contribute to the erosion of the beach. We used to fight that erosion by annually correcting it. As I recall, that was put to a stop because of environmental concerns

Idea for a new lighthouse Dear Editor, Near Denver, Colorado there is an amusement park called Lakeside Amusement Park on Sheridan Blvd on Lake Rhoda.

It could be more functional, a location to have picnics and gatherings, photographers, weddings and it would be a social and business gathering place for everyone.

It could be the new tourist information booth.

Benefits: Less expensive to build, easier to service, and functional as a lighthouse visible to boaters for whom it is being rebuilt.

HOWEVER … If we are replacing the lighthouse as it was, then the developer needs to rebuild it as it is advertising for his marina project. Not the citizens.

with the possibility of an oil, or fuel spill from the construction equipment. So the lack of beach we have been left with is the result of the natural cycle of things with nothing done to correct it.

Do I have a solution that the environmentalist would like, no. And there wouldn’t be enough sand left in the swimming area to fix it now anyways. If nothing is done, will the problem get worse, likely.

I have no idea how deep that wall goes into the ground, but if nothing is done soon to protect it from ice and waves, the next multi-million dollar project on lake front will likely be fixing a water damaged and undermined wall. There was already evidence of that a few years back when at least one of the cement top blocks fell into the water.

I can’t even imagine how many truck loads of sand it would take, where we could find that much clean sand, its cost, or an environmental way to maintain it.

To get the level of sand the beach used to have however, that is what it would take. Without such a step, the water level would have to be lowered far too drastically.

Dear Editor, This letter is in response to Lynn McNish’s letter in the Sept. 19th issue.

You asked if you were the only one who noticed this and my answer to you is NO. I question why it looks like this as well. I own two properties that back onto Highway 20 and trust me, this has become very personal to me.

The sight of the junk yard has got to be the worst looking thing to wake up to everyday. Over the years, you get used to it, but why should I even have to psychologically adjust my eyesight to overlook someone’s lack of attention to details.

The developer of this area was clearly given a green light, without taking a few things into consideration.

What about: the view? the noise? the traffic? the safety of children? that these future homeowners will have to endure.

Clearly something got missed in the approval

of this subdivision.

Now the industrial area east of Highway 20 is only getting bigger.

Also, once the proposed industrialcommercial area north of the traffic circle begins, the increased traffic will only add to this problem. Not to mention all of the retail commercial space that is still available west of Wal-Mart.

I’m glad that someone was on the ball when Ryders Ridge was approved.

The nice berm and sturdy fence that is being built will sure benefit anyone who purchases a home backing onto Highway 20. Now why aren’t the residents affected north of Herder Drive allowed the same comfort and peace of mind?

Hotly contested race in Division 5

Elections will be held in five of six Red Deer County divisions after more than one person filed nominations papers in those divisions. The only acclamations are that of Mayor Jim Wood (who’s elected by the entire county) and Division 1 councillor Philip Massier.

Joe-Anne Matejka and Christine Moore are seeking the seat for Division 6 which spans an area east of Sylvan Lake to Red Deer after George Gehrke chose not to run for another term.

Division 5 will be a hotly contested race with the same three candidates as in 2010. Incumbent Richard Lorenz is facing competition from Rod English and Jim Lougheed.

In the last election, a recount was needed to determine the winner with a mere seven votes separating first from third. Lorenz was elected with 342 votes, English finished with 340 votes and then incumbent

Starcheski a candidate for mayor

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS A third candidate entered the mayoralty race in Sylvan Lake at the last moment, filing nomination papers Monday.

Melesa Starcheski, a resident since 2005, said she’s currently researching the issues and will introduce her platform during the mayoralty forum being hosted by Sylvan Lake & District Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 4.

She’s a realtor with Realty Executives in Red Deer.

Starcheski said she’s running “because I feel I can make a difference”.

Lougheed finished with 336 votes.

The division spans an area that includes Benalto, Spruce View and Markerville.

Division 4 incumbent David Hoar is running against Connie Huelsman for that seat.

Long time incumbent Penny Archibald is running in Division 3 against Don Church and Darlene Schmidt.

The largest field is in Division 2 where the seat has been vacant. Jean Marie Bota, Edward Collins, Gary Langevin and Robert Schwartz are running for the position.

The election will take place Oct. 21 at voting stations throughout the county. A full list is available on the county’s website at rdcounty.ca.

An advance vote will take place at Red Deer County Centre from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 10 and 12.

Red Deer Catholic Regional School trustee Liam McNiff was acclaimed for that division’s Highway 11 Ward, which includes Sylvan Lake, Eckville, Caroline and Rocky Mountain House.

The group convened at the library before walking the streets of Sylvan Lake in the afternoon. Participants were encouraged to dress and act like zombies for the course of the event.

RCMP NOTES

YOUTHS QUESTIONED AFTER BB GUN SHOT AT VEHICLE Saturday, September 14th

a result of the collision. The driver of the SUV, a 31-year-old female resident from Rimbey, was not injured.

Investigation into the matter is continuing.

1:15 a.m. – RCMP attended Sylvan Lake McDonalds after a report of a disturbance. A complainant reported seeing three people smash the windows on a female’s vehicle and flee in a suspect vehicle heading toward Sylvan Lake. McDonalds’ staff advised that they did not witness anything unusual outside the restaurant; however a cab driver reported that his fare was engaged in a verbal altercation with someone in another vehicle in the parking lot but there was no damage witnessed. No specific damage was observed by RCMP and no further reports were received.

Monday, September 16th 7:37 a.m. – A two vehicle collision resulted in injuries on Highway 20 at Highway 12 just outside of Bentley.

Police were already dispatched to a break and enter and were enroute when they were also called to the collision between a car and SUV. Witnesses say they saw the driver of the SUV cut across the path of the car which was heading northbound on Highway 20.

A 28-year-old pregnant female from Ponoka, who was driving the car, sustained non-life threatening injuries as

Sunday, September 15th 1:46 a.m. – A regular patrol along Lakeshore Drive resulted in an assault charge against a 33-year-old Sylvan Lake male. Members noticed a male and female having an argument near Fireside Restaurant and turned their vehicle around to assist when a female witness approached them advising she saw the male lift the female up by the neck against the wall of the restaurant.

The male was arrested on scene and is charged with assault. The 38-year-old Sylvan Lake female victim was not

7:56 p.m. – A resident of Jarvis Bay Drive called police after youths shot at and damaged the window of his vehicle with a BB gun. The 24-year-old male called 911 to report that he was following the youths who shot at the front passenger window of his vehicle.

He tracked two of the youths back to a residence on Jarvis Bay Drive. RCMP attended the residence and spoke with two males, aged 13 and 16, and also with their parent. The youths advised they were present but did not commit the offence. Police also attended a residence on Hillman Way in Sylvan Lake.

Another 16-year-old male was questioned in the presence of his parent and it was agreed that they would pay for the damages. RCMP advised the youths that they would receive community service.

Thursday, September 19th 7:01 p.m. – RCMP are investigating a break and enter into an Eckville residence. The homeowner returned to his residence to find both the front and rear doors open. Valuables, including jewelry, were stolen from the residence. An investigation is underway.

Friday, September 20th 8:09 a.m. – A 31-year-old Red Deer male is facing impaired driving charges after his vehicle was stopped by RCMP on Highway 20 at the traffic circle near Sylvan Lake. Rimbey received a call of an erratic driver heading out of their area toward Sylvan Lake where the male was stopped and provided a breath sample. He was charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over. 08.

His vehicle was towed from the scene.

4:51 p.m. – RCMP are investigating a break and enter into a cottage in Lacombe County. The homeowner checked on his property to find the garage door damaged with entry gained. A tractor and tools were stolen. Investigation is ongoing.

Everest latest candidate to enter race for council seat

Low on gas - Turbulent weather in the mountains forced pilot Peter Killam of Campbell River to set down on Sylvan Lake Saturday. He was delivering a 1956 Beaver from Cochrane, Ontario to Salmon Arm. Getting as far as Banff, he found a storm too great to get through and then when he tried to go through the pass in the Cranbrook area his wind speed was reduced to such an extent that he was running low on gas. According to Charlie Everest, the boat guys as Sunsport Recreation sold him about 325 litres and he was on his way again Sunday morning. Killam, a water bomber by trade had remembered Sylvan Lake when he started looking for a place to set down.

The most recent candidate to enter the race for one of six positions as Sylvan Lake councillor is Charlie Everest.

A 13-year resident of Sylvan Lake, he’s been general manager of Wild Rapids Waterslide Park for the past 10 years and he and his wife, Alison, have managed the 130 unit Rainbow Park condominium corporation for the past five years. They have two sons, Liam, 8, and Rowan 5.

“My platform is fiscal responsibility essentially,” he said during an interview after filing his nomination papers Monday.

“Watching spending, capital projects and making sure money is being spent wisely.

“I think we’ve had some pretty lavish projects in the last few years. I see they look very good but I’m not sure if there was a bit

of overkill. On any future projects, I’d like to make sure money is being spent wisely and responsibly.”

He believes his business experience will be an asset.

During the past 10 years, he’s also gotten to know a lot of local businesspeople, contractors and residents.

Another concern of his is to find out why the downtown core is dying.

Stating he realizes it wasn’t totally the town’s decision, he said, “I think there could have been more lobbying, better decision making.”

Everest is a strong supporter of the need for urgent care facilities in Sylvan Lake. An avid mountaineer, he had a heart attack last year while hiking at Banff and knows first hand the need for rapid care. His young son has also recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

The fire hall is a project which definitely needs to get done within the boundaries of the budget, Everest said.

He believes a spray park is a good idea for the community.

Before moving here, he and his wife researched a lot of communities in Central Alberta and “this was certainly the most attractive to fit our lifestyle”. He loves water skiing, all water sports, fishing, ice fishing, mountain biking, cycling and rollerblading.

Everest ran for a seat on town council in the 2007 election, but at that time his brother was dying from leukemia and his priorities had to change, he said.

Potato sack races were among many activities for youngsters and adults during the town organized fall festival at Centennial Park Saturday afternoon. Student-built eco-friendly home relocated to Sylvan Lake from Red Deer

A home built by Red Deer College (RDC) trades and technology students has been relocated to Sylvan Lake from the college’s main campus in Red Deer.

The home, built with a number of ecofriendly features that aim to reduce environmental impact and ensure longevity, is located on 44th Street, and is the result of a partnership comprising RDC, Landmark Group and Avalon Central Alberta.

Evolve, as the partnership is known, built the home at Red Deer College using Landmark’s ‘panelization’ process, through which the house’s major components were built in a plant in Edmonton before being delivered to Red Deer.

Students then put the house together, before it was transported to its permanent site in Sylvan Lake.

“We reversed the process on campus, so we took it off in pieces, put it on trucks and trailers and hauled it our here,” said RDC construction research liaison Gary Halvorson. “It took us about six or seven hours to dismantle, and it was about eight hours to reassemble. We started at nine in the morning and we were done before supper.”

The project has been three years in the

making, and began when discussions between Avalon and RDC took place.

With E1, the single family home, now underway, Halvorson is hoping it will be the first of many.

“We’ll see where this one goes,” he said.

“It’s almost like a pilot project.”

Several styles of home were considered for the project, but the one chosen was most in line with its environmentallyfriendly mandate.

Referred to by Halvorson as a “stateof-the-art” building, the house features a number of design elements that offer enhanced sustainability and eco-friendliness.

“We focused on the building envelope, because that’s really key to how a house performs,” said Halvorson. “It doesn’t matter what you put in for mechanics, if you don’t have a proper building envelope, you’re wasting some of that.”

Materials used in the construction of the house allow for higher temperature consistency while large windows allowing in natural light and lessen the need for electrical lighting.

The exterior is built to withstand potential weather damage.

Lorne Erickson, general manager of Landmark in Red Deer, said the project benefits all of those involved with it.

Matejka, Swainson seeking Chinook’s Edge position

“It’s a great opportunity for us to work with the college, which obviously is interested in innovation,” he said. “Avalon are similar to Landmark in their mindset that they want to benefit the environment and use different techniques, so we’ve combined some of what they like to do and some of what we like to do, and it’s been a really good partnership.”

The race to represent Sylvan Lake-Benalto area on Chinook’s Edge School Division features the current and former trustees.

Joe-Anne Matejka and Jackie Swainson are both seeking the Ward 1 seat on the division’s board of trustees in the election which takes place Oct. 21.

Six of the nine wards were filled by acclamation following the close of nominations at noon Monday.

Sherry Cooper was the only candidate in Ward 2 (Penhold-Poplar Ridge-Springbrook), Colleen Butler was acclaimed in Ward 3 (Delburne-Elnora), Ron Fisher won by acclamation in Ward 6 (Sundre), Trudy James was acclaimed in Ward 7 (Olds) , Gord Kerr was the only candidate in Ward 8 (Didsbury) and Sheldon Ball was acclaimed in Ward 9 (CarstairsCremona). With the exception of Ball, the others were all current trustees.

In Ward 4 (Innisfail) long time trustee Penny Archibald chose not to run again. Derek Baird, Holly Bilton and Linnea Thompson are seeking election to that seat.

Incumbent Connie Huelsman is being challenged by Linda Possakka for the Ward 5 (Bowden-Spruce View) position.

Voters in Sylvan Lake will be casting their ballot for school division trustee at the same time as they vote for mayor and council positions. In Red Deer County, voting for trustees will be held in conjunction with voting for county councillors.

NOTICE OF A PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING PROPOSED BYLAW NO. 1626/2013 Being a Bylaw to amend the Land Use Bylaw No. 1555/2010.

WHEREAS it is deemed necessary and expedient to amend Bylaw No. 1555/2010 in the manner hereinafter appearing: NOW THEREFORE, the Council of the Town of Sylvan Lake, in the Province of Alberta, duly assembled and under the powers conferred upon it by the Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, Chapter M-26, and amendments there to, enacts as follows: 1. THAT the Land Use Bylaw be amended by removing section 3.1.3 (a).

2. THAT the Land Use Bylaw be amended by removing section 7.19.3 and replacing it with the following: 7.19.3 Garage Suites shall be restricted to sites that: (a) can be accessed by a rear lane and are: i. Lots which back onto a lane adjacent to an arterial road that is separated from the lane by a landscaped boulevard; or ii. Lots where a side or rear lot line abuts a site containing a rowhousing, four-plex, or apartment development; or iii. Lots where a side or rear lot line abuts a High Density Residential District (R3), a Public Facility District (PF), or a Commercial District. (b) directly abut Sylvan Lake or a reserve or open space abutting Sylvan Lake.

3. THAT the Land Use Bylaw be amended by removing section 7.19.8 (b) and replacing with the following:

(b) Windows and platform structures, including balconies and stairwells, shall be designed to face a flanking roadway, interior of the lot, or the lane, so as to provide privacy for adjacent properties.

4. THAT the Land Use Bylaw be amended by adding the following: 7.19.11 A garage suite shall not be subject to separation from the principal dwelling through a condominium conversion or subdivision.

5. THAT the Land Use Bylaw be amended by removing section 7.19.11 and replacing with the following; 7.19.12 In addition to the other regulations listed herein, the following standards shall apply to garage suites not located in the W-DC District: (a) Garage suites may only be located on parcels containing single detached dwellings; (b) The minimum parcel area that may contain a garage suite is 428m2 (4607ft2) (c) The maximum floor area of a garage suite is 60m2 (645ft2). (d) The minimum side yard shall be the same as the primary dwelling requirement for the district. (e) The maximum height of a garage suite is 7.5m (24.6ft) above grade and shall not exceed the height of the principle dwelling. (f) No property shall be permitted to have a garage suite where adjacent residential dwellings are of a height less than 20ft.

6. THAT section 7.19.12 of the Land Use Bylaw be amended by renumbering it to 7.19.13.

A Public Hearing regarding the proposed Bylaw will be held on Tuesday, October 15th, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Government Building at 5012 48th Avenue, Sylvan Lake, Alberta.

All persons in favour or opposed to the Bylaw will have the opportunity to be heard. If you are unable to attend personally, written submissions must be submitted to the Municipal Government Building no later than 4:00 p.m. on the day of the hearing.

If you submit comments on this bylaw, either orally or in writing, the information you provide may be recorded in the minutes of the Public Hearing, or otherwise made public, subject to the provisions of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A copy of the proposed Bylaw and any related documents can be seen during regular office hours from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Municipal Government Building. The style of the hearing will be informal and persons wishing to speak will be requested to state their name and address for the record upon being recognized by the Chairperson.

New council will have struggle over debt Asselstine says he’s going to miss the job

Noting he will miss the job, Councillor Laverne Asselstine announced last week he’s not seeking a second term on Sylvan Lake council.

“Being on council is a huge commitment. A couple of meetings every week. It pretty much defines your schedule, you’re somewhat restricted,” he said.

His wife Lynn has recently retired and they’re looking forward to travelling and escaping some of the cold winter.

Commenting on his one term on council, Asselstine said, “It’s been interesting, given me an insight into how municipal government functions. I never really made decisions I wasn’t content with. I feel good about that.”

However, he added, there are a lot of issues that will be left on the table for the next council.

“You’d like to see them through to completion, but there’s no way in the world that would happen. The business of the municipality flows continuously. I stepped in for a short term. We took on capital projects when I stepped in three years ago, the town hall, fire hall. Someone else

has to carry forward.”

Among the projects he’ll follow is the arena. “It will be interesting to see the plans for that.”

One item the new council will likely struggle with, he suggested, is the 10 year capital plan. “They’re going to have to address that. It’s a fairly expensive outlook over the next 10 years. It’s going to be a challenge on their behalf. I’m not in favour of taking a lot of debt on. The arena, there’s going to have to be some debt. Council is going to have to decide how much they want. If they increase debt you carry forward the cost of debt. That either means cutting services or raising taxes. I’m not in favour of raising taxes, but I don’t think service cuts are the answer either. It’s going to be a challenge.”

Asselstine said before he was elected to council he was involved in the community as a volunteer. “I assisted where I felt I could. I’m going to continue doing that. I feel an individual needs to contribute to their community.”

He concluded, “I’d like to thank everybody for their support. The people in the municipality who had faith in me, voted me in and stood by me. I appreciate your thoughts and kindness in helping me do what I had to do.”

The Lions lost their first game of the season after allowing the Spartans to take a 22-20 lead in the last minute of the game. Then an interception thrown by the Lions was run in for another Spartan touchdown on the last play of the game. Final score 2820 for the Spartans. The Bantam Lions are now 3-1 on the season.

Two people have aced holes at Meadowlands Golf Club in recent weeks.

Lonnie Staples approached the tee box for hole #4 on the evening of Aug. 21st. He scoped it out, knowing the hole pretty well. Lonnie reached into his bag, pulled out his 4 iron and drove the ball straight down the middle of the fairway. Not sure where his balled ended up, he walked to the hole. Thinking he’d save some time he pulled the flag before search-

ing the backside of the green for his ball. But to his surprise, the ball flew out of the hole as he pulled the flag.

As part of the CalFrac member group, David Symons and his friends James Hurson, Matt Kerr and Levi Van Heinen pulled up to hole number 4 on Sept. 10th. Not an avid golfer, and only playing his third round of the season, David took out his 4 iron and drove the ball down the middle. His buddies all cheered saying, “It’s in, it’s in!”. But David didn’t believe it, figuring it had just rolled over and onto the backside of the green. On approaching, there was David’s ball, nestled in the hole.

Improvements evident in play of Grade 9 girls volleyball Lakers

Sweep

- Laker Trent Kondor (24) took a handoff from quarterback Kane Price (5) and began a sweep around the outside during one of the plays at last Friday’s league game against Notre Dame Cougars.

He ran in for a touchdown but it was called back on an illegal block offense by the Lakers. Penalties hurt the Lakers as they lost 125 yards on 12 penalties compared to the Cougars who were penalized six times for a total of 50 yards. Kondor gained 39 yards for the team on four carries during the game. The Lakers won against their archrivals 14-7, their first win of the season. Scoring touchdowns for the Lakers were Landon Rosene on a 25 yard run and Shon Zenert on an 11 yard run. Cam Lee kicked converts on both touchdowns.

The Grade 9 H. J. Cody Lakers girls volleyball team consists of Erin Matthews, Morgan Lockyer, Paige Hagel, Leah Hagel, Alyssa Cossuta, Madison Dodman, Braxton Ornates, Kiara Gardner, Kaitlyn Simpson, Alex Cadman, Abby Tucker, Regan Eisler, Lauchlyn Martin and Bailey Kentz. The coach for the season is one of the dads, Eric Brinker, who stepped up to help out the school and the teachers.

He was given a daunting challenge as the team was picked on Sept.

11th, practised on the 12th then had their first tournament on the 13th and 14th at Red Deer College.

The girls fared well winning only one of four games, but considering they had only been thrown together three days prior they should be proud of their efforts.

The girls played their first league game against the St. Thomas team out of Red Deer on Sept. 18th. They won four out of five sets played.

That’s a great start to the season for them.

In the second game it went to a third set to break the tie and they lost a close 15-13. The girls were disappointed because if they had won that one, they would have made it into the gold medal game.

The parents could be over heard talking about how much the girls have improved since Grade 8 and even how much they have improved since the previous weekend. The parents give kudos to the girls and to Coach Eric on a job well done so early in the season.

Bears earned first win of the season

coach Garnet Rambaut described as a “backand-forth game”. He was pleased with the way his players picked themselves up from last week’s game to go on and win their first game of the season.

Their positive attitude played a major role, he feels.

“It’s funny when you get into peewee football, change is always possible. Attitude controls altitude, I guess,” he said.

Rambaut said his players’ attitude against Stettler was good. As the first game of the season, however, they were unsure of what to

expect. The win against Innisfail will give them the boost they need to achieve further wins this season, he said.

“A win is the most amazing medicine. It’s very easy for them to get up and get positive when they see a positive result.”

pleased with his players’ defensive performance on Saturday, and was glad they managed to hang on for a win in such a close game.

One extra player was added to the Bears’ roster, and Rambaut hopes more will be added as the season advances.

“Until we get our numbers up, the energy level is hard to manage,” he said.

Nonetheless, he is looking forward to the Bears’ game in Olds on Saturday, and feels there’s no reason why his team can’t earn another win like the one against Innisfail.

He has a “little bit of an idea” of what the Bears will be up against this weekend, and with the skill shown by his players recently, he is confident about their ability to compete, as long as they stay healthy.

“I’m very pleased with our skill level,” he said. “There is nothing wrong with the skills of my players. Just managing health and managing time on the field are the biggest challenges.”

The Bears have twice played Rocky Mountain House in a practice scrimmage, which Rambaut said has been beneficial for both teams. With each game played, his team will only become stronger.

“I think as the season goes on, you progress every game, because it’s just that much more time together and that much more time to practise plays.”

After facing Olds on Saturday, the Bears return to Sylvan Lake to take on Red Deer at 10 a.m. on Oct. 5 at H.J. Cody Field.

There’s plenty planned by Sylvan Lake’s Centennial committee and the library to celebrate Alberta Culture Days this weekend.

Several of the events will showcase local talent, said Brenda Dale, chairperson of the Centennial task force.

The House of Music classic concert is beginning at noon Saturday at the gazebo in Lions Legacy Park. This is the concert which was cancelled on the 1913 Days weekend due to inclement weather.

There are several reasons to visit the Municipal Government Building (town hall), from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. People involved in creating a time capsule in 1988 for the town’s 75th anniversary will be on hand to open and display its contents. There’s a Centennial quilt display and a chance to see the Legacy Art Project created with help of Grade 7 students. It was unveiled during the building’s grand opening Wednesday. The artistic endeavours of entrants in the Centennial Art Contest will also be displayed, said Dale.

Activities at the library get underway tomorrow (Friday) with children’s story time en francais from 4-5 p.m. (pre-book, limited space). On both Friday and Saturday the library is the location for experimenting with art. Play and experience different art forms from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There’s a Photoshop for Beginners course taking place from 10:30-12 noon on Saturday (pre-book, limited space).

Then from 1-2 p.m. it’s Henna @ the library. Dale said that’s hand decorating.

The art gallery at Community Partners’ location on 50th Avenue will be open from noon-3 p.m. with Mary Grace making cupcake art.

Free popcorn and lemonade will be served and there’s a charity BBQ. The second performance of the Seniors Drama Troupe play “The Peer Project” takes place Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. It’s about the 1928 Womens’ Institute initiative to have a wooden pier built into the lake. The first performance, in June, was sold out and there are just a few tickets left for this show. Contact Brenda Dale at 403-887-3937.

Then Sunday evening at 7 p.m. Memorial Presbyterian Church is hosting the Doll Sisters from Rocky Mountain House and an old fashioned ice cream parlour. Tickets are $20 each and available at the church.

“We’re encouraging people to take a stroll, walk Centennial Park and enjoy the historical plaques that have been erected on the towers,” said Dale. The plaques were a joint project of the town, summer villages around the lake and the Centennial committee.

ocal grants are available to Sylvan Lake area organizations for projects impacting seniors, children and youth, families, and the broader community.

Applications from registered charities are accepted until Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 4:30 pm.

Time capsule offers look into the past Contents to be displayed Saturday

Sylvan Lake residents will be taken back in time on Saturday, and given a chance to see what life in town was like 25 years ago.

A time capsule buried at the community centre in 1988 was recently unearthed. Its contents will be displayed at the town office beginning at 12 p.m.

Saturday.

Showing the capsule’s items will be particularly meaningful for Michelle Wright (Coppens) — a former Sylvan Lake resident responsible for putting the capsule together while leading a Sylvan Lake peer support group as a 19-year-old.

“It was the 75th anniversary of Sylvan Lake at that time, and we had different activities that we did,” she said. “One of them was to put together a time capsule from the youth of 1988 to the youth of 2013.”

Included in the capsule were items meant to offer an insight into life at the time — a scrapbook, phone book and a video made by young people, as well as letters they wrote outlining future goals.

These items will be displayed and the video will

be shown.

“Technology 25 years ago was a lot different,” said Wright. “It was just hilarious because (the video) is VHS, and at that time you couldn’t really edit, so you can see that.”

Wright and other members of the peer support group viewed the video, and examined the capsule’s other contents, on Sunday. In the video, the youths — most of whom were in their early teens — act out the top ten movies of the time, and tour H.J. Cody School.

The phone book allows people to see “what a small community (Sylvan Lake) was at that time”, according to Wright.

Members of the group were recently summoned after the capsule was unearthed in June. The unearthing process wasn’t publicized due to fears that the capsule’s contents would be damaged or destroyed.

Wright is excited to finally be able to share its contents, including the video, with today’s residents.

“You just see youth sharing youth,” she said. “We didn’t have any earth-shattering things to share, but we shared as youth what would have been important.”
