By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com Crowsnest Vineyard began picking grapes in their vineyard on September 23. “I didn’t expect it this early,” Sacha Heinecke said of the harvest. “I’ll be happy if we get the picking done before the wine festival.” Heinecke said all varieties are “looking very good.” The winery, which is the second oldest in the Similkameen, has
found a comfortable production niche at approximately 3,500 cases per year. “That seems to be the perfect amount for us,” said co owner Sacha Heinecke, although the winery did once reach a production high of 6,300 cases. Heinecke said that 40 per cent of the winery’s production is sold through the wine shop. The remainder is distributed through the Lower Mainland, Island and Interior of B.C. through three rep-
resentatives. Crowsnest grows a number of varietals - Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Merlot. The family run business contains a winery, vineyard, bed and breakfast, and a restaurant. Crowsnest will be featuring a “ten kilometre dinner” to kick off the fall Wine Festival, during the weekend of October 5- 6. This years wine festival runs from October 4 -14.

ued at several thousand dollars. The suspect(s) will likely be attempting to sell or trade these cards and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Keremeos RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.

Grade six students observe International Day of Peace By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com Students of Ms. Beebe’s grade six class commemorated the International Day of Peace last week by constructing pinwheels with peace thoughts attached to them. Posters and wall displays in Similkameen Elementary Secondary School added to the message on Friday, September 20 as the students held a cupcake sale in conjunction with International Day of Peace, which is
observed on September 21. “The day was fixed in 2002, with the aim of encouraging a day of global ceasefire and non violence,” explained Beebe. The day was observed in Afghanistan several years ago when a ceasefire was established so that humanitarian aid could be delivered. In 2005, two art teachers developed the idea of using pinwheels as a symbol of the day. They produced 5,000. Today, several million are made around the world as children are taught the values of tolerance and mutual respect.
Online program helps parents track student progress By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com Jupiter Grades is a new program to Similkameen Elementary Secondary School this year. The program is intended to improve school-to-home communications for student success. “It’s a big focus of ours this year,” said SESS Principal Cate Turner. “We hope to improve communications between students and parents, and the greater community.” The online program allows teachers to send progress reports
and messages directly from the teacher’s grade book to parents and students. Students and parents can then (using passwords) login to check such things as grades, homework, lates and absences, announcements and calendar notices. The program allows parents to track their children’s progress on a daily basis, hopefully correcting errant behaviour before it becomes a bigger issue. “We’re currently collecting email addresses from parents,” Turner said, adding that the program has been introduced as a voluntary one to the staff, with all but two teach-
ers signing on. The program under went a pilot introduction with last year’s grade seven class. Turner said the program’s data collecting ability also helps her to see trends developing in the school. “For instance, I see there are a number of ‘not in class’ complaints this year, that might be an issue,” she said as she scanned the program. “Overall, we’re pretty excited about Jupiter Grades,” she concluded. “It should be interesting to see how our communications with parents improves as the year progresses.”
Princeton’s emergency department returns to full time service Oct. 11 Contributed Following the successful recruitment of three new physicians, the emergency department at Princeton General Hospital will return to 24/7 service on October 11. The new physicians will join the permanent physician and nurse practitioner at the Cascade Medical Clinic to offer primary care services. The four physicians will also share emergency department coverage. The Princeton Health Care Steering Committee has developed an Action Framework, which will serve as a blueprint for developing and sustaining an effective health care model for people living in and around Princeton. Membership in the committee includes rep-
resentation from Interior Health, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, the Town of Princeton, physicians, the South Okanagan Similkameen Division of Family Practice and the community. Princeton General Hospital’s emergency department has been closed four nights a week since May 2012 due to ongoing physician shortages. “It has been a long and sometimes difficult process,” says Brad Hope, Area “H” Director for Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen. “But it demonstrates very clearly just how much can be accomplished when we all work together. My profound thanks to this amazing community, to our healthcare professionals, to Interior Health and to the Province for making this happen.”

A semi rollover at the north end of Yellow Lake caused traffic disruptions for nearly three hours on September 17. The driver of the semi, which was travelling westbound and contained vegetables, was unhurt in the incident. The accident occurred around 6 p.m. Police, Kaleden firefighters and ambulance all attended the scene. The trailer sat in the Yellow Lake pullout for two days while work crews emptied the contents and righted the unit.

New society hopes to restore Hedley cemetery Contributed by Eric Vance There are 252 known burials in the Hedley Cemetery, with the first ones taking place in 1911. The graves of a number of the people in the cemetery are marked, but there are other cases where the graves are unmarked, but it is known who is buried there. However, there are unmarked graves where it will probably never be known who is in them since they go back many decades and there are no records existing anymore that we know of to help us with identification. There were burials in the cemetery up until the late 1990s / early 2000s, after which the society that was managing the cemetery ceased to exist Since then, various people have taken care of individual family graves and parts of the cemetery (the Masonic Lodge and Loyal Order of Moose sections), but overall maintenance of the cemetery in a consistent and organized manner has been lacking. Several years ago, various people with family members buried in the cemetery, plus people with an interest in the cemetery from an historical and tourist perspective, started talking about getting organized to maintain the cemetery and also to seek approval from the provincial government to reopen it for burials. That led to the formation a few months ago of the Hedley Cemetery Society, which is incorporated as a nonprofit society in BC. There are seven founding directors, although, sadly, Thom Leslie, who was also president of the Hedley Pioneer Museum,
recently passed away. Eric Vance is the only director not from the local area. His interest is that his father was born in Hedley in 1917. He also has nine family members buried at the cemetery, including his great grandmother. The inaugural meeting of the Society on Saturday September 28 at 1 p.m. at the Hedley Seniors Centre at 789 Scott Avenue. Anyone with an interest in the cemetery or knowledge of its history is encouraged to come out and participate. The society is operating on a shoestring budget right now and it is limited how quickly some of the goals can be accomplished, but the top priority is to keep the cemetery well maintained to reduce the risk of a wildfire and to discourage vandalism. Marking the unmarked graves with simple crosses should also be done. A website has jsut been set up and information is slowly being added to it. It is hoped that it will become the central point of information collection and dissemination for everything to do with the cemetery, both currently and historically. The website address is: www.hedleycemetery.ca The society gratefully acknowledges a Community Grant for $847 that we have just received from the RDOS with the assistance of Angelique Wood, Area “G” Director. People are encouraged to become members of our society. An annual membership will be very modestly priced.
Tulameen ice surface roof project can keep interest earned on grant Contributed The Tulameen Ice Surface Roof project will be allowed to keep interest accruing on a $240,000 grant for use on the project. The grant, which came from the BC Community Recreation Program, is funding 80 per cent of the cost of the project. The other 20 per cent will be sourced locally. The ice surface project stands to gain an additional $4,700 by being allowed to keep the interest, something not normally done. The grant money was not utilized after its receipt by the regional district in 2012,
and as part of RDOS accounting process, went into a non-interest bearing balance sheet account. The interest earned during a year on investments is allocated to reserve and deposit accounts, and since the funds were not in an interest earning account, no interest was allocated to the grant. In making their decision the board discussed the issue as to whether their decision, made at the regional board meeting on September 5, was to be a “one off ” or policy. The board eventually decided the matter was one for future discussion.

Building Smart and Caring Communities through the Community Foundation Grant Grant will help kids access skating programs in Keremeos Contributed by Donna Bartlett The Friends of the Keremeos Skating Rink received an $1,196 grant from the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan - Similkameen on Monday Sept. 16. Friends of the Keremeos Skating Rink works to reduce the financial barriers to recreational skating programs for kids. Since 2009 the group has been subsidizing the cost of programs such as mites hockey, drop-in sticks and pucks hockey, skating lessons and recreational public skating. The subsidy lowers the fees to the public so these programs are more accessible to all families. Each year friends have provided free passes for public skating to all children in the area. Friends of the Keremeos Rink also provide skates, helmets, skate aids, hockey
nets and hockey protective equipment for use at the rink. This helps to outfit growing children so they can participate safely in skating and hockey. The $1,196 grant from the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan - Similkameen makes a significant addition to the $2,700 raised so far this year by the Friends of the Keremeos Skating Rink: raffle, refundable beverage container collection, Kars Under the “K” support, plus RDOS Grants in Aid from Area “B”, Area “G”, and the Village of Keremeos. The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan - Similkameen has served our region for over 20 years, working with donors to create legacies in the form of permanent endowment funds. Grants are distributed from income earned, preserving the capital to ensure a perpetual stream of funds. Editorial Volunteers make festival Sizzle For a short period of time early Saturday morning, it looked very much like 2013 would be the year of the “Drizzle Sizzle.” A forecast predicting a rainy day came true, and early Saturday it rained for about an hour. But the skies eventually cleared, and by the time of the chili cook off, which began at 11 a.m., it was sunny and warm at Memorial Park, where a good sized crowd had gathered to partake of a sampling of seven different chilis. Congratulations are in order to the Sizzlefest crew of volunteers who made it all happen - and for pressing on in spite of dismal early morning weather, and a brief mid afternoon shower. Judging by the numbers in the park throughout the afternoon, it appears the Similkameen’s fall festival experienced another successful year. The organizational detail was evident this year as well, as events carried out on time and on schedule. The chili cook off was particularly well done, by handing out individual plastic bags containing everything one needed to sample and judge seven different chili offerings. There was also a steady stream of children lining up for tattoos, hair paint and turns at the bouncy castle and bus slide. In short, organizers ensured there was something for everyone. “We were just out for a drive with our grandkids, when we saw this,” said one gentleman from Kamloops. “What a great idea. It was a perfect stop for us.” With so many distractions in society today, it can sometimes be difficult to get participation in shoulder season events like the Similkameen Sizzlefest. Sometimes the event loses its momentum and eventually disappears. However, based on the exemplary work of the Sizzlefest volunteers, it appears that to be an unlikely possibility in Keremeos, anytime soon.

Sometimes it’s enough just to play the game By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com A sure sign that fall has arrived is the opening of local ice rinks. I guess the exception is Keremeos, where it’s a sure sign that winter has arrived, given the schedule for this community’s ice rink. Around the time the South Okanagan Events Centre opened up, I decided to get back into the game of hockey. I thought that with the extra ice surfaces in Penticton finding a team to play on would be easy, because for players of my calibre, that can sometimes be a tough thing. I didn’t start playing the game until I was 15 years old - never really paid any attention to it until the first Canada Russia hockey series in 1972 when Paul Henderson scored the game - and series winner with 34 seconds left in the game. I was totally inspired by that, and naively
thought I could strap on a pair of skates and go play with the rest of the boys who had been in the game since they were five. Forty years later, I’m still trying. Never having been particularly skilled athletically, it didn’t help to take up a game like hockey at a time in one’s life when one should have long ago grasped the fundamentals of the game. The house league team I played on a year later won the Midget category championship - in spite of having me on the team. I got a trophy when my contribution was a total of three goals in the whole season - as a left winger. Still, I developed a passion for the game from that first summit series, and over the years have played wherever and whenever I could. With all those ice sheets in Penticton, I still couldn’t find a game. I eventually went south of town to Oliver, where about 30 older guys had put together a kind of
pick up game every week. Generally it’s the same 15 - 20 guys turning out every week to play old timers’ hockey. It has turned out to be the type of game that suits me. The players come from all skill levels, and widely varying age groups. Physical play is tightly controlled (the few guys that insisted on lining up at the blue line to knock opposing players out of the arena have been asked not to come back), and while there is competitive spirit, the first and only requirement of play is to have fun. Over the years, my skill level never really did increase; I still can’t stickhandle, or carry the puck. Receiving passes are a pretty iffy thing, too. Based on that description, you’re probably wondering why I’m taking up space on the ice. Since joining the Oliver guys, I seemed to have found an aspect of the game I can do reasonably well in.

Following in the skate glides of the team’s better players, there’s often second chances to score if one can position himself properly in front of the net. In fact, at this stage of the game, it’s surprising how many second chances there are. In the confusion of a failed breakaway, or some other honest goal scoring attempt lies an opportunity for the team “garbageman” to try and finish the play. That’s where I come in - technical skills would be an asset, but are not completely necessary. I was talking to an old high school buddy a year or so ago, who also took to the game later in life even later than myself. “I just crash the net,” he laughed when describing his play. “If the puck squirts loose, I’m there to shovel it in the net.” It might not be pretty to watch, but that’s okay too - it’s not like there’s a capacity crowd in the Oliver arena - at least, not when we’re playing.

Resident looks for answers from the mayor To the Editor: An open Letter to Mayor Bauer Dear Mayor Bauer: I am writing this open letter to you in hopes of motivating you to finally respond completely to questions I raised in previous correspondence dating back over a year. Initially, when I wrote to you a year ago, you asked the CAO to respond. Her response did not answer most of my inquiries and you did not bother to follow up to see if I received a complete response. More recently, I completed this years survey in some detail, again raising questions I have previously raised and offering suggestions to you and council in a number of different areas. (I actually raised 18 suggestions and received no response to any of them.) Your response to my extensive and detailed input was very brief to say the least. You were mostly defensive of your performance until now as mayor without actually responding to my questions or suggestions. You indicated that you would be getting back to me but that was weeks ago and I have heard nothing.(You last indicated you would get back to me after August 12 but, to date, I have heard nothing from you.) You and council have been severely criticized for not being responsive to input from citizens. This is a perfect example from you to verify that criticism. In a recent conversation with a colleague of yours on council, the comment was made by that council member
that council does need to be more responsive to input from the citizens they have been elected to serve. You apparently don’t seem to take this need to be responsive too seriously. My comments to you in completing the survey in great detail reflect conversations I have had with many of my neighbours. Therefore, I feel that you not only have ignored my comments and suggestions but also those of many other citizens of Keremeos. This lack of responsiveness is insulting and inappropriate from an elected official. You have about 14 months left on your mandate. If you hope to be re-elected, you (and council) need to be much more transparent and responsive to input from the electorate. When can I expect to get from you answers to my questions and responses to my suggestions? Perhaps you should consider submitting your resignation if you are unwilling or unable to respond appropriately to legitimate and detailed inquiry. To other Review readers: If you have experienced similar treatment from Mayor Bauer or some other council member, consider expressing your feelings or concerns in a letter or e-mail to the mayor and council. How else will they get the message that we as citizens/ taxpayers/voters are unhappy with the lack of leadership on council?! Gary Johnson, Keremeos
New streetlights would be welcome to downtown merchants To the Editor: A Light Came On While passing by our new (trial) LED downtown street light, I had this feeling that I had seen that style of light shade before. I do appreciate the effort and the much needed new light, but I would kindly ask council to put another style of light shade up for us to choose from. It is, after all, us downtown people who will see them every day. A light shade more
accustomed to the B.C. small towns, brings visions of lantern style, stagecoach, more turn of the century, not a style that resembles more of the European style, possibly World War One Kaiser style helmets. If the village needs help in choosing, please ask the downtown shopkeepers. We have waited a long, long time for new lights, and they will be there for a long time, so let us choose wisely. Regional district debate continues over channel trail funding By Steve Arstad news@keremeosreview.com Oliver rural Area “C” Director Allan Patton introduced a director’s motion at the September 5 regional district directors meeting that even he eventually voted against. If the reasoning behind the motion was to incite further discussion regarding the board’s recent decision - to provide $14,000 annually in funding to maintain the trail adjacent to the Okanagan River channel in Penticton - it worked. The board spent nearly 45 minutes discussing the issue, which previously split the board with a 10 - eight weighted corporate vote at the August 15 board meeting. Patton’s motion - to have the regional district enter into a partnership with four Indian bands and six municipalities to maintain all regional trails systems within the RDOS - was, in his words, “A reaction, maybe a spiteful reaction but it still makes sense.” “If we’re all going to be paying for the maintenance of a trail on Penticton Indian Band, Penticton land, we’re not sure, then, really, you have to open it up to everybody,” he told the board. “The reason I voted against this in the beginning was because I didn’t want to see all our trails budget being devoted to maintenance.” Patton further expressed an interest in seeing
more of the trails budget go to capital upgrades and improvements. “I’ve had multiple conversations over the past two weeks over this,” said Oliver Director Ron Hovanes, “not one person I spoke to, including rural Oliver that I bumped into, thought this was something they wanted to see their tax dollars go.” Hovanes noted further that the regional district did not have tenure over, nor was the channel trail part of the KVR trail, adding that regional district priority was to secure tenure on KVR corridors. Hovanes called it a “sub regional issue” that should be dealt with from that point of view. Keremeos Director Manfred Bauer sought an opportunity to reconsider the board’s position. “One of the big issues, here is that it was arbitrary - there’s no policy. We really need to look at some of the questions that have been raised and not answered,” Bauer said. He suggested that those directors who had voted in favour of the funding could reopen the question by reversing their position, adding that Chairman Pendergraft also had a 30 day period to reconsider the decision. “There are a lot of unhappy people out there, and I can echo what Director Hovanes said. Family literacy offerings coming this fall Contributed Similkameen Family Literacy coordinator Dave Cursons will conduct a broad array of literacy related workshops this fall and winter. The art and craft of Calligraphy, Improvisational Theatre for Beginners, a Reader’s Theatre, a Philosopher’s Café and a number of other kinds of activity will unfold over the next few months. “Workshop with Shadow Puppets “will begin at The Grist Mill Apple House on Wednesday, October 16 at 3:30 p.m. where all ages are welcome and materials provided with the goal of giving a show on the November 1, “All Saints Day Celebration” at The Grist Mill. “Much will depend upon community response. Space will be limited and mini-
mum pre‐enrollment is needed. Volunteer co‐hosts are invited to join each event.” says Cursons Anyone interested in learning more about programs can call: 250‐499‐2352. “When people with special skills and abilities appear among participants, they will be asked to accept our direct assistance in conducting their own sessions”, says Cursons. “We’ll use the Similkameen Family Centre and expand into other space as the need warrants”. Twenty-one entrants brave this year’s Sear Factor Chili Pepper Contest at Sizzlefest By Colleen Christensen Keremeos Infocentre Manager Saturday’s Sizzlefest Results: · In the hot sauce contest, the best green hot sauce went to Sara Harker (Harker’s Organic Fruits); The best Special Variety hot sauce went to Gregory Fuchs (Gregors Gourmet); and the best red went to Cori Richet (Intrigue Sauce Company). · In the Chili Cook-off, first place went to Riverside RV park; second place went to Shore Farms; and third place went to Intrigue Sauce Company. The best decorated booth prize went to Shore Farms. A total of 21 brave souls entered the Sear Factor Hot Pepper Eating Contest, but not all of them competed. Four contestants did not stay for the event and another four could not finish the three jalapeno peppers required for a qualified time in the event.
Dan Ragula of Toronto won $100 (first place) with a time of 40.2-seconds. Second place ($75) went to Luke Vesprey of Keremeos with a time of 48.8-seconds. Third place ($25) was won by Anthony Klinkera of Vancouver with a time of 51.6-seconds. The rest of the qualified times were: fourth place- Sandor Koleszar (Vancouver) 56.9-seconds. Fifth place -Salvador Munoz (Mexico) 58.2-seconds. Sixth place - Joshua Mendelsohn (Keremeos) 58.4-seconds. Seventh place - Gerald Gillies (Olalla) 1:01.4. Eighth place - Karoly Puskas (Summerland) 1:23.9. Ninth place - Nigel Brusch (Penticton)

Three Similkameen students receive Valley First awards Contributed Three students from the Similkameen have received a major boost to their education funds after receiving 2013 Valley First education awards. The Valley First education award is presented in the form of 11 individual $2,000 awards to secondary and post-secondary students who are also Valley First members. Winners demonstrate outstanding school and
community involvement. This year’s local recipients are Joshua Vissia, Jessi Hitchen and Olivia Lawrence, all from Keremeos. Grant recipient Jessi Hitchen says the education award from Valley First is a welcome funding boost. “When I learned that I was receiving a Valley First education award for outstanding community involvement, I was overjoyed,” says Hitchen.” This award has been a
great help in paying for tuition and textbooks as I start my studies towards a bachelor of arts degree.” This year Valley First also presented two $2,500 education awards to secondary and post-secondary students who showed outstanding community volunteerism with their local food bank. Stephanie Fell and Jennifer Andrews from Kelowna were this year’s recipients.

Director Hopkins objected to the fact that the City of Penticton paid for trail maintenance in the regional district, but received no similar benefit themselves. Community Services Manager Mark Woods told the board that this year was the first for the RDOS to have a maintenance budget for trails. “The Trails Master Plan has upwards of 800 trails that we could work on, but the priorities for us are to focus on the KVR trail because that’s the main spur that connects our communities - it’s the main hub that

Area “D” Director Tom Siddon, who was absent from the original debate, said, “I think the kind of spirit we’ve cultivated here would be better served if we did reconsider,” asking what the $14,000 cost would be if to the adjacent areas if only they were to provide the funds. “We’d also be subject to some backlash from our constituents who would ask, ‘Why are you doing this?’” he added. Director Hopkins asked for clarification regarding a mechanism to bring the matter forward again. CAO Newell replied that a director previously in favour of the funding would have to come forward with a notice of motion in order to revisit the issue. As for Patton’s original motion, it was defeated, with only Director (Area “B”) Bush in favour.

Princeton resident achieves a life giving goal By Lisa Carleton Black Press Rob Smylie loves animals. He believes that pets should have the same opportunities for life saving care as humans do. After hearing a report about oxygen masks for pets, he thought to himself, “I’m going to do this—I’m going to get some of these masks.” Smylie went to work to find out as much as he could about the product. In April, Smylie donated O2 Fur Life® kits from WAG’N Pet Safety Gear to the Princeton Fire Department, Princeton Extrication Society and to Princeton Ground Search and Rescue. Since then, with the assistance of generous people who love their animals and their community, Smylie has
acquired and presented kits to the volunteer fire departments of: Hedley, Keremeos, Eastgate, Erris, Hayes Creek, Tumbler Ridge and to the Princeton Exhibition Association (PXA). Smylie had wanted to give a kit to the Tulameen Volunteer Fire Department, but was happy to find out that they already own one. Smylie has received a couple of offers of financial assistance that he is thankful for. “If you want to help, I’ll pick up the ball and run with you,” he said. Warren passed away the day after his 92nd birthday. He was predeceased by his wife Lorna Linklater (Dodds) in 1993. He leaves behind his 6 children: Heather Linklater, Lindea Parnell (David Ellsworth), Bonnie Gosse (Dave), David Linklater, Margo Ludwig (Jim) and Lori Hewkin (Ross), 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Warren was known for his positive attitude (How are you? Wonderful!) and his love of telling jokes. His friendship was enjoyed by many people. He was an organic orchardist in Keremeos for over 25 years and owned the Happy Bus Orchard. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. She was predeceased by 2 sons and her husband Harvey. Ethel will be missed by her many friends and family. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.
