Perfect weather and great turnout for the 22nd Jaffray Fall Fair

by Lily Durham Thank you, thank you.

This year the Jaffray Fall Fair was a great success and very well attended. The committee was overwhelmed with the attendance as well as the participants in the car show and parade. This was the largest parade we have had and we definitely want to thank all of those that came out and participated. Our

fair grounds were busy with families and vendors for the farmer’s market. We know the kids enjoyed the bouncy tent, dunk tank and sandlot as well as the activities hosted by the 4H club. Great food, Great music and an atmosphere of country living. A special congrats to our fine archery youth that put on a great demonstration. Jaffray Volunteer Fire Department again did an outstanding job

with their Open House events. We want to thank everyone and especially the businesses that support us from year to year as well as the volunteers that commit their weekend to making this an annual event successful.

Apple Capture Project returns to the area

Turning apples into juice, or dried snacks is free with Wildsight’s Apple Capture project.

Submitted Harvest season is upon us, and with it comes an abundance of apples growing all around this area. Wildsight Kimberley-Cranbrook would like to help you enjoy our local fruit now and in the months to come, through its Apple Capture Project – an initiative that makes equipment available free of charge for picking, juicing, drying, and more.

The successful Apple Capture Project began as a creative solution to the never-ending volunteer task of picking apples before the wildlife get to them – helping to keep both wildlife and humans safe. Now, in the project’s third year, more and more people finding delicious ways to take advantage of the bounty of local apples.

Wildsight has five presses and grinders in action between Kimberley and Cranbrook, with the Kimberley units stored at the Allotment Garden and the Cranbrook ones in a shed - kindly built by the COTR Pre-Apprenticeship Program - at the Cranbrook Public Produce Garden. The four Excalibur dehydrators

make it easy to dry large amount of fruit into tasty snacks. Picking bags, ladders, and longhandled pickers are also available to residents of both Kimberley and Cranbrook.

“Through the Apple Capture Project, this community has literally turned tons of local apples into juice and other preserves,” says Jessica Windle, Food Sustainability Coordinator for Wildsight.

For those without their own fruit trees, the Apple Capture Project also features a tree-share program. Many generous fruit tree owners are happy to have their trees picked as a way to reduce animal attractants and to share the harvest.

There are also a number of trees on public land that are laden with fruit. Available trees are listed on the Wildsight website, and those looking for apples can find a tree close to them, contact its owner, and arrange to harvest the fruit.

Fall Maintenance Makes for a Lush Spring Lawn

After watering my garden the other night, I sat for a bit to enjoy the warm evening breeze and take a minute to reflect on the season. Many great things have happened in my garden this year, and of course there have been a few setbacks as well. The lawn in my backyard is kind of in between, not terrible, but definitely with room for improvements. If we want a more beautiful lawn area next year, we need to get some work done this fall.

First, we will have to do some top dressing.

Top dressing a lawn is the process of adding a fine layer of quality soil to the lawn surface.

This will help us fill in the tiny hollows that have developed over time and even out the lumps and bumps. It will also benefit the lawn as it builds up the quality of the soil over time.

With the clay soil in our yard, top dressing will result in better drainage, and consequently better root development. Sandy soils, on the other hand, will be able to hold moisture better and become more drought resistant. Top dressing can also stimulate the grass to produce new shoots and you will get a denser grass cover.

This helps combat the onset of weed and moss infestations.

Top dressing should be done in the fall and can be done every year. One important thing to keep in mind is to avoid applying too much soil at a time. Top dressing should be done in quarter inch intervals so you do not risk suffocating the crown of the grass shoots.

We also have a larger area close to the fence where the dog has done some “gardening”.

Top dressing will not fix the hole he has left, but rather we will have to build up the soil grade again and overseed with a good quality grass seed. Fall is a great time to seed a lawn, whether it is overseeding a smaller area or establishing an entire new lawn area. Temperatures are lower, but not yet cold and fall rains or later snow will add moisture, After preparing the ground by removing any debris, establishing proper grades and adding any amendments, you can start seeding. It is important you choose a good quality grass seed mix that is blended specifically for our growing zone as well as the specific area you want to seed. Do you have pets using the lawn?

Is there a lot of foot traffic? Are you looking for an English-style lawn? There is a blend for that!

Many people are quite liberal with the grass seed, but really you do not have to use a huge amount to get great results. A good rule of thumb is that 1 kilogram of seed will cover approximately 500 square feet of yard space.

Grass seed does not have to be buried, but needs to make firm contact with the soil, so tapping it down lightly with a lawn roller or even by applying a piece of plywood and walking on it. You will need to water any newly seeded area regularly for at least 10 days. Make sure to keep the soil moist, but not flooded.

Finally, fall is the best time for weed control.

All that time we spent in the spring, trying to control the infestation of dandelions, hopefully it can be avoided next year with a bit of care taken now. The dandelions that will be blooming in our yards next spring are already in the lawns right now in their immature form.

If you spray an appropriate product now, you can kill a majority of the weeds and the rest will be weakened going into winter. Mother Nature might take it from there and help you finish them off.

The best defense against weeds is a healthy lawn, so our last step will be to fertilize with a fall lawn food to get our grass through the cold months and have a beautiful and lush lawn next spring.

The Cost of Living has increased 30% over the past 19 years, and CUPE Support Workers Local 4165 have had an increase of 20%. The BC minimum wage has increased $4.25 per hour over the past 19 years.

Clerical Workers - Perform a variety of clerical and accounting duties. School secretaries are the core of each school and are the first person all children and parents rely on for every day assistance. Over the past 19 years the hourly rate has increased by approximately $5.13 and this was achieved by using a pay evaluation through gender pay equity.

Custodians - Clean and care for our schools assuring a safe and germ free environment for students and staff. Over the past 19 years the hourly rate has increased by approximately $3.02.

Tradesman and Journeymen - Keep our schools free from construction hazards as well as ensuring a safe and secure environment for students and staff. Over the past 19 years their hourly rate has increased by $6.00. This increase was achieved to keep qualified Trades people in the School System.

Most of our workers only work on a 10 month basis, School District #5 (SE Kootenay) implemented a modified calendar many years ago. CUPE employees lost another 12 days of pay.

All K - 12 Support Workers are trying to negotiate a fair settlement at this time.

Other Public Sector Unions have negotiated fair settlements and this Local as well as the rest of CUPE in BC are trying for the same.

Please let your Government Representative know that you support the K - 12 workers in your local schools.

Baynes Lake Fuel Treatment Program 2013 The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) invites proposals on two blocks that are proposed for fuel treatment with a total area of 52.1 Ha. The proposed treatment involves mastication in preparation for a prescribed burn. Work must be completed by May 1, 2014. The goal of the treatment is to protect the community from wildfire.

John Neville, president of BC Nature and lifelong birder, presents the sounds and images of the raptors of Canada on Monday, September 23rd at 1 p.m. at the Cranbrook Public Library.

John records the sounds of the birds in the wild with great sensitivity and field craft awareness. His major aim is that the production of his art of nature recording will make people more aware of the feathered creatures and their need for a protected habitat. In this Monday’s hourlong presentation, with the kind permission of Robert Bateman, John has linked the images of these fabulous paintings with his authentic sound recordings of raptors. He captures the audience’s attention with his vivid descriptions of the special biological features that allow raptors to be successful birds of prey.

Recently John’s nature recordings have been used by the Canadian Wildlife Service, CBC’s The Nature of Things and in Parks Canada interpretive programs. His work is currently on exhibit in the new Robert Bateman Center in Victoria.

The New Homes Registry provides free access to find out if a home has a policy of home warranty insurance and is built by a Licensed Residential Builder, or whether it’s built without home warranty insurance. Homebuyers can obtain valuable information such as the name and contact number of the warranty provider, the builder’s warranty number and whether an owner-built home can be legally offered for sale.

Every new home built for sale by a Licensed Residential Builder in British Columbia is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. Better known as 2-5-10 home warranty insurance, this coverage includes: two years on labour and materials, five years on the building envelope (including water penetration), and 10 years on the structure. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada.

their efficiency. Some models help to maximize the sun’s heat, other to minimize it, and still others to filter out its ultraviolet rays. That means you can pick and choose windows based on where they will be installed in your home.

Regardless of your choice, however, double-pane windows remain the basic minimum for comfortable living during our long Canadian winters. These types of windows have two panes of glass that seal in air to ensure a certain level of insulation. When facing a southerly direction, double-pane windows allow you to reap as much solar heat as possible— a great advantage during the winter months.

If you live in an area of the country where the winter can be bitterly cold (that’s pretty much everywhere in Canada), you might want to opt for triple-pane windows.

Low emission windows that have a metallic oxide film are able to allow daylight to enter, prevent heat from exiting, and even reduce the risk of condensation.

What’s more, they do not absorb any of the heat that they block out, which will prevent rooms from overheating during the summer. Low emission glass will effectively filter the sun’s ultraviolet rays and reduce the amount of light that enters a room. Windows that contain inert gas sealed between the panes will offer even better thermal insulation that a doubleor triple-pane window.

Even better still, doubleor triple-pane high performance windows that are filled with gas and that have one or more low-emission films will offer the highest level of thermal insulation and energy efficiency. And you thought all windows were alike!

Richard Blair Ayling "Blair" 1929 - 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Blair Ayling announces his passing on September 11, 2013 in Cranbrook, British Columbia at 84 years of age.

Blair was born on June 4, 1929 in Vancouver, BC. He is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Chris of Cranbrook and Mike of Ottawa, daughter Tracey of Surrey and grandchildren William, Ava, Thomas, Nathan, Tristan and Mikaela. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Wynne Ayling and his sister Shirley (Ken) Sinclair.

A memorial service for Blair was held on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the McPherson Funeral Home Chapel in Cranbrook at 2:00 pm.

A special thanks to Dr. Sarah Chesney and Dr. Kevin McIver for the wonderful care they gave Blair over the last few years. It was much appreciated.
