Police have taken over investigation of the devastating fire Monday at Pedro Gonzalez Fruit and Garden Ltd. “After our investigation, we found it is suspicious enough in nature that we have turned it over to the RCMP,” said Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley Wednesday afternoon.

Assistant fire chief Rod Macfarlane, who initiated an investigation into the fire, said Tuesday that the speed with which the fire spread in the five minutes between dispatch and arrival on scene was unusual.

“Things didn’t go as expected,” he said, noting that what initially came in as a “commercial alarm” at 12:20 a.m. Sept. 9, was amended to a “commercial structure fire” within one minute and was a deep-seated fire by the time firefighters arrived. “Given the time frame, it’s very unusual. It’s rare something will move that quickly and do that much damage.”

The first indication of a fire was when heat detectors went off, alerting the monitoring company, which called dispatchers.

What triggered the change to commercial structure fire within a minute was a call from a passerby on the Trans-Canada Highway, something that was followed by multiple 911 calls.

Macfarlane says a duty chief was at Pedro’s within four minutes, saw a fire in the back and immediately called for additional resources.

“We found a fire in the feed building and focused our attention on that because that’s where we saw flames on our arrival,” Macfarlane says, noting the fire spread quickly from the seed building at the back, through the main sales building, causing the roof to collapse.

“It was pretty spectacular at that point,” he says. “Within a short time, flames were rolling out of there.”

extinguishing the fire and preventing it from getting into the west side of the main building. The collapsed roof made accessing hot spots difficult.

Grateful no one was injured in the blaze, Macfarlane says the building and contents suffered extensive loss.

“It (flames) all went through the roof structure so there was very little damage,” he says of items inside the store. “The sad thing is, as much as we could save, the resulting smoke and water damage makes the rest of the products unusable.”

Macfarlane says the fire department had been working with the insurance company to discover the source and

the cause of the fire.

A special meeting was held Tuesday night to interview all firefighters who responded to the fire in order to determine what each one of them saw when they arrived at the blaze.

The RCMP, who were initially working with the Salmon Arm Fire Department, have now assumed control of the investigation.

“The police investigation is ongoing and updates will follow as the investigation develops,” said a press release from the Salmon Arm detachment.

The fruit stand has been owned by members of the Ruth Family for 38 years. There is no word yet on whether they plan to rebuild.

Fire season quieter than usual

B.C. has emerged from one of its sunnier summers in recent years with a below-average number of forest fires.

As of Sept. 1, the B.C. government’s wildfire management branch recorded 1,687 reported wildfires for the season, compared to an average year of nearly 2,000 fires. This year’s fires burned a total of 11,434 hectares,

far less than the average damage of more than 130,000 hectares.

Wet weather returned with school to large parts of the province, after a sunny summer that saw several dryweather records set.

For the first time since records were kept, Vancouver airport recorded no rain for the entire month of July.

The number of reported fires so far this year is slightly higher than the total for last year, but the total area

burned in 2012 was nearly 10 times greater. The province spent $133 million on firefighting last year, a total that should be much lower when the bills are added up for 2013.

Open burning remains banned for the Kamloops Fire Centre region until as late as Sept. 20. Campfire bans were lifted Aug. 26 for the Kamloops and Coastal Fire Centre regions, and earlier in the month for the Northwest, Cariboo

and Prince George regions as dry conditions were relieved.

Despite public information campaigns and open burning restrictions, provincial statistics continue to show about 40 per cent of wildfires are human caused, with most of the rest sparked by lightning. The relatively quiet fire season allowed B.C. to send crews to help battle wildfires in Washington, Montana and Idaho during August.

JL Jackson rezoning heads to public hearing The public will have a chance Sept. 23 to have its say on new plans for the former site of the JL Jackson school.

At Monday’s council meeting, those councillors present voted unanimously, although some reluctantly, to give first and second readings to an application to change the zoning of

the 4.8 hectare property from P3, institutional, to C2, town centre commercial. The property is currently two parcels, and the school board would like to subdivide the largest parcel into three, making a total of four parcels. The largest parcel, once subdivided, would house the existing SASCU Downtown

Activity Centre, a new 22,000-square-foot school board office, and a parcel for future development. A letter from the school board attached to the rezoning application states that the institutional zoning is seen as a significant barrier to development by commercial developers.

The public hearing will be held Monday, Sept. 23, 7 p.m. at the North Canoe Hall.

The venue of the public hearing has been changed from Salmon Arm City Hall to accommodate an additional public hearing that night regarding a coffee company proposed for Canoe.

Keep on baiting the bad guy

RCMP officers just love it when the bad guys take the bait. In this case, we’re talking the bait car. But criminals have also been known to take the bait boat, bait ATV, bait snowmobile, and bait bicycle.

The bait car program – which has been expanded by police officials to include other modes of transportation such as boats, snowmobiles, bikes and ATVs – has been a tremendous help in reducing crime statistics provincewide.

Police detachments that operate the bait car program will park the vehicle at a location and wait. The car is equipped with devices that alert RCMP when it is being entered. Sometimes articles left inside the car are stolen. Other times, the car itself is taken. Inside the car is a camera that helps police and their partners identify would-be thieves. Police also have the ability to shut down the car if it’s being driven away.

This year, there have been 438 reports of thefts from vehicles in the North Okanagan between January and September. That’s a drop of 141 reports from the same time frame in 2012.

While the bait car program is a big part of that, the local detachment also credits its commitment to crime reduction, targeting prolific offenders such as those who steal often from vehicles with helping reduce the crime statistics.

“We have a team of dedicated officers that are looking at prolific offenders,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “We know there are a number of individuals in our communities that continue to do the majority of the crimes.”

It’s always a plus to see local crime numbers going down.

Cleaning up spawning beds In time, each and every angler comes to know that when you are casting to fish in a river or stream, you look for that glimmer of silver in the water that tells you there is a bright, shiny fish moving through the nearby water. That momentary glimmer is also, in some ways, also a glimmer of hope, a chance that the fish might just take your offering and the age-old fight between predator and prey will be on.

The problem is that salmon stocks in this province, especially sockeye salmon, are in trouble and opportunities for catching a salmon are becoming increasingly reduced.

There are, however, still a few glimmers of hope out there - especially when individuals and/or groups take things upon themselves.

On July 21, members of the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club, staff from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and a crew from Streamside Environmental, an Ohio based company that provides restoration service (using their patented Sand Wand technology) for cleaning the earth’s water

The GreaT OuTdOOrs James Murray resources, got together to initiate work on a number of former salmon spawning beds along the Salmon River and Canoe Creek. The areas chosen were once productive spawning beds which had become silted over and impacted with sand, rendering them no longer suitable.

Funding for the project ($20,000) was provided by the Pacific Salmon Foundation with the Fisheries and Oceans Canada providing technical expertise and the fish and game club providing labour and co-ordination of the project. Streamside Environmental was brought in, on a contract basis, so that Fisheries and Oceans Canada could get a firsthand look at their technology at work. An estimated 15,000

square feet of streambeds along the Salmon River and Canoe Creek were treated with some 550 cubic feet of silt and Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club volunteers have also erected fencing along specific stretches of Canoe Creek and Blurton Creek to prevent cattle from walking along the streambanks of both creeks and destroying riparian habitat. Members of the Lower Shuswap Stewardship Society spent considerable time planting native trees and shrubs along Blurton Creek to stabilize the banks, as well as, putting rocks in place to prevent erosion.

Their efforts have already paid off as sockeye salmon have been spotted spawning in Blurton Creek for several years now.

While these are by no means the kinds of large environmental projects that draw national attention, they are, nonetheless, the kinds of efforts that have a cumulative impact and may, when all is said and done, prove to make the difference between something, albeit small, getting done and nothing getting done

because a study had to be done before an assessment of past studies, and the criteria for future studies, could be completed in order to assess the results of all past and present studies concerning the possible proposal of any and all future studies, which should be completed in order to assess the previous study and its potential bearing on the next study – or something like that.

If we support local conservation, environmental and outdoor groups who give of their time, labour and yes, sometimes even knowledge and expertise, we just might be able to keep whatever glimmer of hope there is for our endangered socket salmon stocks alive.

My hat goes off to groups like the Salmon Arm Fish and Game Club as well as all the other conservation, environmental and naturalist groups whose members are willing to simply do what needs to be done. Of course while the bureaucrats are busy doing their studies, they are out of the way so the ground-level volunteers can get things done – or something like that.

Legislature likely silent until spring

VICTORIA – The B.C. government is not planning to recall the legislature for a fall session.

That could change if a labour dispute shuts down public schools, with contracts expired since spring for teach-

ers and school support staff. The government could call an emergency sitting to impose a settlement if the school year is disrupted by strike action.

But Finance Minister Mike de Jong, the B.C. Liberal house leader, confirmed that the scheduled session from October through

November will not be held, as has become routine for the B.C. Liberal government.

“The house sat through the summer in the aftermath of the election, and the government wants to take the time to prepare for a robust spring legislative session,” de Jong told reporters Tuesday.

After a brief session to table a pre-election budget in February, the government adjourned in March to begin the campaign, then recalled the legislature in July to debate the budget and ministry spending estimates.

Meeting those minimum requirements took 36 sitting days.

Local dancers took their art outside and down the river as they prepared for another busy season.

The Ta’Lana Twirlers paired up with dancers from Salmon Arm, Kamloops and Vernon for adventure filled with fun and dancing.

The group recently took to the water, paddling down the Thompson River from Chase to Pritchard.

This is an annual event which brings together large groups of dancers from around the Shuswap and beyond. It is used as a way to gear up for the upcoming square-dancing season which begins this month.

While the group of enthusiastic paddlers, consisting of local square and round dancers, were enjoying their day on the water, they decided a much-needed dance break was in order.

The adventurers pulled to the side for some dancing fun along the sandy beaches.

A number of paddlers could be seen showing off their dance moves in the water, while others lounged on the sandy beach of Banana Island.

The water will soon be chilling and these adventurers will be taking their moves to the dance floor.

There are two clubs in the Shuswap area.

The Ta’Lana Twirlers meet on Thursday evenings starting Sept. 26 at the Blind Bay Hall from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. On Oct. 3, there is a potluck at 5:30 p.m., followed by an introduction to square dancing for beginners. Three free lessons in modern square dance will also be given on Oct. 10, 17, and 24 if there is enough interest.

The Salmon Arm dance group resumed this week and will run Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m,. at the Fifth Avenue Senior’s Activity Centre on 170 Fifth Ave. SE. They will also offer free lessons.

Salmon Arm caller Don Krebs and Peter Weel, the caller in Blind Bay, are experienced teachers who make square dancing a fun and friendly activity.

What happened to dancing?

ShuSWap paSSion Jim Cooperman Despite the enormous increase in opportunities to hear live music in the Shuswap, there has been an unfortunate decline in community dances. A number of factors have resulted in the decline, including more stringent rules and regulations, more expensive fees for use of facilities, and a waning of interest in dancing. This situation was certainly not always the case, as the Shuswap has a long history of dancing.

First Nation powwows stem from the Secwepemc people’s age-old traditions of drumming, chanting and dancing. Before the days of movies, radio, and television our Shuswap pioneers enjoyed live music and dancing and some of the first community structures built by volunteers were the halls used for these events.

And prior to the construction of community halls, one–room schools and barns doubled as community centres for concerts, dances and parties.

Shuswap Lake settlers had barely begun clearing their lands and planting their fields in October 1906, when Blind Bay pioneers held a weeklong work bee to build their first

hall. People came from all over the lake to help and when the log building was completed in March 1907, there were 70 settlers dancing the night away.

Blind Bay pioneer Archie Reedman’s diary is filled with descriptions of dance parties, some lasting all night long.

Fast forward to the 1970s and early 1980s, the Shuswap Coffee House organized dances at the Gleneden Hall and the old Shuswap Theatre in Tappen.

Dances were a popular year-round activity at community halls throughout the Shuswap. The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society sponsored dances and concerts for years at the community centre and in various halls. When the focus shifted to the annual Roots and Blues Festival at the fall fairgrounds, the concerts and dances ended.

Part of the blame for the decline in community dances lies in the higher costs and the difficult-to-obtain liquor permit, that amounts to what I characterize as a war on fun. Consequently, many community halls, including the SASCU Recreation Centre are seeing limited use for dances as few groups can cover the higher rents and insurance and they struggle to find volunteers to run the events.

But there also appears to be a decline in interest in dancing.

One of the oldest organizations in the city, the 80-year-old Salmon Arm Dance and Social Club holds six dances

a year at the legion, many with live bands.

However, the membership has declined to 30, as perhaps there are fewer people that want to polka, fox-trot, twostep and waltz.

The trend for the Roots And Blues Festival has been for less dancing and more standing in a crowd vibrating, which is what the younger crowd likes to do. This year the dance area was taken over by people in chairs and the gyrating, standing crowd owned the front of the stage area.

The dance tent did see a steady number of people eager to learn new types of dance or improve their skills, and there is usually some creative dancing happening at the Boogie Barn Stage and along the sidelines at other stages.

There is indeed a crowd of people in the Shuswap and nearby communities who enjoy dancing to great live music, whether it is country, rock, blues

or reggae. One of the region’s most successful events of the year is the Trail Alliance shindig at the SASCU Recreation Centre and the dance floor is always crowded. In April, I helped organize a successful, well-attended dance at the Canoe Hall with a great band from Kamloops that raised funds for the SASCU Downtown Activity Centre.

Thankfully, especially for the dancing crowd, a new Shuswap Recreation Society initiative dedicated to presenting live music called the Shuswap Music Hall in partnership with music producer Mark Greenhalgh is hosting its first event on Friday, Sept.

20. This will be an opportunity to dance to B.C.’s much acclaimed Latin-rock-soul-reggae band, The Boom Booms, plus Kamloops own funk-soul-R&B band, Earthbound.

Shuswap Idol hands out honours

Friday night’s rain may have chilled attendance at the Salmon Arm Fall Fair slightly, but it could not dampen enthusiasm at the main stage.

Shuswap Idol producer Lori Risling says 25 contestants lined up to perform.

“It was probably the best year yet,” raved Risling Monday after she had her ninth idol under her belt. “It went so smoothly, our audiences were phenomenal even with cool weather.”

Some 150 people showed up Friday night with more than that on Saturday and more than 200 for Sunday’s finale.

“As always, the audience was warm and welcoming and many comments from the performers about how much they loved performing for a live audience, a great audience, a big responsive audience,” she says.

In the 18-and-under category, 11-year-old Ruby Bruce was in first place; Rhys Middleton was second and Karrah Cochrane took third.

took first place in the 19 and over category with Laurie Poulin in second and Robyn Chagun in third place.

In the singer-songwriter class, Kassandra Harder took top spot, while Josh St. John took second.

The judges gave Josiah Taschuk third place in this division, but the crowds honoured him with the People’s Choice Award.

He does pretty phenomenal guitar work, people were just mesmerized,” Risling said, noting Taschuk sat on a picnic table on the dance floor in front of the stage and did harmonics and percussion.

“It was interesting and unique for our competition and the audience just loved it.”

Risling gets $1,750 from the fair’s entertainment budget and over the past several years, her employer, dentist Ian Shields, has fronted the $500 singer-songwriter award – something Risling mentioned on stage, inviting someone else to pick up the cost of the prize.

Cusson Tree Service owner Yves Cusson stepped up to the spon-

sorship plate right after the competition, “All in all it was a huge success,” said Risling, looking forward to next year’s competition and inviting anyone who would like to get on the funding bandwagon to call her at 250-832-1960.

Honourable mentions were given to Brittany Lawrence and Carly Pullin.

Avoid succumbing to cold and flu season Learned optimism can be beneficial, helping to minimize feelings of depression, reduce stress levels and possibly improve physical health.

According to a controlled study by the University of Pennsylvania’s Martin Seligman, Ph.D., and Gregory Buchanan, Ph.D., incoming university freshmen who participated in a workshop on cognitive coping skills reported fewer adverse physical problems over time and retained their physical and mental health better than those who were not in a coping skills group. This isn’t the first evidence that optimism can have profound benefits. In a retrospective study of 34 healthy Hall of Fame baseball players who were on teams between 1900 and 1950, the known optimists lived longer. Survival rates for optimistic cancer patients are higher than for those who are hopeless. Optimists are also better equipped to handle stress and manage incidents that would incite anxiety.

Although there are plenty of people who seem to be eternally optimistic, optimism is not an inherited trait. Changing perceptions and teaching oneself to be more

optimistic is possible. Being an optimist doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to problems or expecting everything to be easy.

Being optimistic means learning from situations and recognizing that obstacles are there for a purpose.

Men and women hoping to become more optimistic can employ the following strategies. * Stop and embrace a positive event. Take time to mull over something good that has happened and take credit for your involvement. Mentally categorize this feeling for later when you need an example of the way opti-

mism makes you feel. * Surround yourself with optimists. Hang out with people who have a sunny view on life rather than those who bring you down or commiserate.

Learning from example can help you develop more positive thinking patterns. * Believe you can and will succeed. When approaching something new, don’t set yourself up for failure. Go into it with the vision that you will thrive. Even if you don’t succeed as planned, you can use the opportunity as a learning experience and set a new plan to tackle.

* Erase negative phrases from your vocabulary.

Using the terms “I can’t” or “It’s impossible” is a recipe for failure. * Avoid complaints.

Complaining does little more than make the person complaining feel even worse and could bring down the people around you. Because it won’t solve anything, there really is nothing productive about it. If you must get your feelings out, write them in a book and then tuck that book away. * Take care of your body. You certainly can’t be positive if you aren’t feeling 100 percent. A

well-balanced diet, routine exercise, sufficient rest, and finding time to go outdoors and get some fresh air and sunshine can help keep a person on a positive path. * Get involved. Spending too much time isolated and alone can eventually degrade anyone’s feelings of well-being.

Take the time to meet with people outside of your family and engage in different activities that take your mind off of stressors. People who are busy in a good way are more inclined to see the brighter side of life. * Practice positive affirmations. Tell yourself good things. Receiving praise is something that instantly can put a person in a good mood.

Instead of waiting for praise from others, give yourself a pat on the back every day. * Realize that things don’t happen overnight.

Becoming more optimistic will take time, but it can be done. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a little more time than you expected.

Living longer and more productively comes partially from being an optimistic person and making the best of every situation.

These foods may help prevent cancer Cancer is a potentially deadly disease that does not discriminate based on a person’s age, sex, ethnicity, or social status.

Though anyone can get cancer, the National Institute on Aging notes that a person’s risk of getting cancer increases with age, even if that person has no family history of cancer.

That reality highlights the importance of routine cancer screenings for men and women age 50 and older.

While screenings are an important part of detecting and treating cancer, those over 50 should know they can take certain measures to possibly prevent the onset of can-

cer. For example, including certain foods as part of a regular diet may be effective at preventing cancer. Though there’s no way to guarantee a person won’t get cancer, the following foods may help lower the risk. * Blueberries: Blueberries may help prevent the onset of neck and mouth cancers. That’s because blueberries are rich in antioxidants, which the American Institute for Cancer Research notes can protect cells from being damaged. * Coffee: Though studies about the efficacy of coffee as a potentially preventive agent against cancer are ongoing, some

studies have found that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can lower a person’s risk of developing colon, endometrial and prostate cancer. * Whole grains: Whole grains can help men and women control their weight, as they are lower in calories than more traditional options. But studies have shown that whole grains, which can be found in whole-grain and whole-wheat pastas, can also reduce your risk of colon cancer. * Tomatoes: Tomatoes are loaded with lycopene, a carotenoid that numerous studies have indicated can reduce incidence of

cancer, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration. These studies have based their findings on tomato consumption and not on the use of lycopene supplements, which may or may not be effective at preventing cancer. Cooked tomatoes can improve the body’s ability to absorb lycopene, further enhancing its ability to protect the body against cancer. * Fatty fish: Fatty fish, including salmon, that is full of omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to a host medical benefits, including lowering a person’s risk of cancer and heart disease.

RCMP in the Shuswap and ICBC are launching a month-long campaign to deter distracted driving, the third leading cause of fatal car crashes in the province after speed and impaired driving.

Driver distraction is blamed as a factor in 91 fatalities province-wide each year. Transportation ministry officials estimate drivers are four times likelier to crash when talking on a hand-held phone while driving and 23 times more likely to be in a crash if texting.

Enforcement by officers handing out $167 fines will be stepped up throughout September, according to police.

A 2012 survey for ICBC found B.C. motorists consider texting while driving to be just as risky as drinking and driving, yet 40 per cent of those who own cellphones admit they’ve used a hand-held phone while driving.

LASS seeks reading volunteers If you love to read and are interested in working with children, consider becoming a volunteer with the One to One Children’s Literacy Program.

One to One reading programs are taking place this year at Bastion, Hillcrest, South Broadview, North Canoe, Salmon Arm West, Ranchero, Silver Creek, Carlin, Grindrod, MV Beattie, Parkview, Sorrento, North Shuswap, Highland Park, and Armstrong Elementary Schools.

Parent and community volunteers are needed to support students with their reading. The commitment is 1.5 hours per week

for 12 weeks staring in mid-October.

During that time, volunteers will read with three children for 30 minutes each. The children are in grades

2 to 5 and are selected by their teachers to receive this special reading help. All tutoring is done at the school during regular school hours.

A three-hour training session for all volunteers in basic reading strategies is mandatory as well as a criminal record check.

Boating crash trial set for January The trial of a man accused in a July 2010 fatal boat crash has been pushed back to January of 2014.

The trial date for Leon Michael Reinbrecht, charged with criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, was initially scheduled to begin on Sept. 9 in BC Supreme Court in Kamloops. It is now confirmed to start on Jan. 6, 2014, and court time is set aside for a five-week trial.

A pre-trial conference is set for this Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Reinbrecht, in his early fifties, from Celista, was the operator of a speedboat that collided head-on with a houseboat in Shuswap Lake’s Magna Bay on the 2010 Canada Day weekend, leaving the 18foot Campion Runabout fully embedded inside the houseboat’s cabin. The crash occurred about 11:20 p.m. on July 3, 2010, as boats were leaving the bay following the annual Canada Day weekend fireworks display.

Killed in the crash was houseboat owner and driver, 53-year-old Kenneth William (Kenny) Brown of Chase. Thirteen people were onboard the houseboat and three people on the speedboat.

In addition to Brown, eight people were taken to hospital in Kamloops.

Third try at impersonating Live at The Classic!

Police in the Shuswap are warning residents after a third incident of a man attempting to impersonate a police officer occurred on Aug. 30 in the North Shuswap.

A vehicle of similar description to the two previous incidents, which took place on Aug. 28, is suspect again.

The Chase RCMP received a report from a North Shuswap cou-

ple that they were followed by a small black car that had flashing red and blue lights in the windshield.

This took place on Friday, Aug. 30, between 3 and 4 p.m., as they drove eastbound on Squilax-Anglemont Road near Roderick Haig Brown Provincial Park.

The couple did not stop for this vehicle, and they continued on their route towards

their home.

At one point the couple turned off the main road and noted that the small black car continued eastbound.

The couple did not get a description of the driver, but believe the driver was alone in the vehicle. The RCMP were able to confirm once again that there were no police officers working in that area at the time of the incident.

In two earlier incidents, people were pulled over on the Trans-Canada Highway near Pritchard by a man who drove a car with flashing red and blue lights.

The man identified himself as a police office conducting traffic stops.

In both cases, the man asked for a driver’s licence and insurance, then returned them.

Fire department to return chief’s truck

Chase council decided Tuesday to allow the local fire department to sell Unit 1, a brand new chief’s truck which was recently purchased with the approval of council.

After former Chase Fire Chief Brent

Chamberlain left the department, the interim chief and the remaining officers reviewed what their needs were.

It was then decided that these needs could be met in a more costefficient way.

The fire department requested the authorization to sell the new truck, which has never

been used, and instead buy a van with a cascade system. This option is more cost-efficient and would save the village money.

Council gave their approval to the new plan, and the truck will be put up for sale.

A request was also made that the old Unit 1 be disposed of; this

request was also approved.

Coun. Rick Berrigan explained to gallery members that a previous presentation by the department members showed that the truck was badly deteriorated and unsafe.

Allowing it to be used would make the village liable.

Reitsma said that in order to insure the mill, they would need to prove they could handle a fire, which would include testing the lines.

If the test showed the lines could not support the heavy use, Pinnacle would either build their own pool of water or invest in the infrastructure already in place.

Another resident yelled her opinions about an explosion which took place at their Armstrong site, with Reitsma stating the Workers Compensation Board had made mistakes in their report and that they had taken all required steps. Reitsma also noted they have

Heat notch one exhibition victory

It might be a new year but the Chase Heat are once again off to a slow start.

The stands were filled with eager fans last Wednesday as the Chase Heat took to the ice for their first exhibition game of the season against the North Okanagan Knights. While the freshfaced team put in a valid effort, the Knights continued to outplay them throughout the contest.

The scoreboard didn’t deter the fans who continued to cheer at every breakaway, save and neargoal. The game concluded with the Heat capturing their first loss of the season with a score of 2-1.

The Heat travelled to Kamloops on Friday, Sept. 6, to take on the Storm. Despite some fierce competition, the Heat managed to snag their first win of the season with a closing score of 6-5.

The boys returned home for a Sunday game with the hopes of solidifying another win against the Storm. While local fans had the chance to see the other half of the Heat hopefuls, they did not get to witness their first home victory as the game ended with a score of 9-2 .

The Heat headed to their final exhibition game for 2013 against the Okanagan Knights on Monday Sept. 9.

Suicide prevention requires awareness Living WEll

What makes life worth living?

When asked the question, what makes life worth living, some of the answers you might hear are: loving and supportive relationships, meaningful work and involvement in hobbies, opportunities for fun and play, and the ability to pursue your dreams.

However, there are circumstances that may prevent people from having these opportunities and gaining the belonging, acceptance and recognition we all need. These circumstances may include poverty, unemployment, discrimination and limited services available when they need help.

Many of these challenges create stressful conditions and, over time, they also create poor mental health. Perhaps most troubling is the fact that suicide claims the lives of more than 3,500 people in Canada a year and approximately 500 of those deaths are young people between the ages of 15 and 24.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among our young people in Canada and this fact leads me to ask, what can we do to support all youth in building lives worth living? This is true prevention but there is no one easy answer.

We can begin by understanding those things that make our youth feel connected and accepted.

Communities can play an important role in suicide prevention. Communities that provide youth with opportunities to build coping and problemsolving skills, dependable adults and role models, access and transportation to a variety of recreational activities, strong family support and involvement, community and cultural ties, positive and safe school environments and opportunities to be involved in decisions that affect them will help them to be happier, healthier and safer youth.
