Farmer’s Markets across the province are celebrating the 4th annual Farmers Appreciation Week – and the Gold Pan City is no exception.

The week runs Sept. 8 – 15, with a focus on fresh, fun and food.

Quesnel’s own Farmers’ Market runs May through October, 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. “This is an incredibly busy time for farmers,� Harvest president Rob Borsato said. “This recognition is very timely.�

According to a study done by UNBC Dr. David Connell, at least 50 per cent of farmers selling at markets are well under the provincial age of farmers, 55 years. “I think we have one of the best markets in B.C.,� mayor Mary Sjostrom said. “What a great opportunity for our residents to buy and support local producers and artisans.� “B.C. farmers play an important role in our local economy and community and strengthen our local food system,�

BC Association of Farmer’s Markets executive director Elizabeth Quinn said. “We want to make Farmers Appreciation Week an annual time to appreciate our farmers for growing beautiful fresh food close to home.�

Shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Quesnel Fire Department and the Quesnel RCMP responded to a fire in a storage container at the rear of a commercial property in the 200 block of Anderson Drive.

The fire was discovered by passersby who saw flames coming from the storage container and immediately called 911.

The good samaritans, a 22-yearold male and his 18-year-old brother, then began to extinguish the fire with a nearby garden hose. “The RCMP and the Fire Department commend the fast action of the good samaritans who used a nearby garden hose to extinguish the flames,� Cst. and media spokesperson Krista Vrolyk said. “Their swift response prevented the fire from spreading and from causing severe damage to the building itself. �

A second fire occurred during the same time frame and was ignited in a garbage can located outside a residence in the 100 block of nearby Lewis Drive. This fire was discovered after a resident heard noise and woke up to see a pickup truck depart northbound on Lewis Drive.

It is extremely fortunate that neither one of these fires resulted in more substantial property damage or spread to nearby buildings.

Investigation into these arsons continues.

Quesnel RCMP are asking the public to be vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity in this area.

Anyone with any information about these fires or any suspicious activity, vehicles or persons observed in the area prior to the fires is asked to call the Quesnel RCMP at 250-992-9211.

How much caffeine or cigarettes do you take on a daily basis? Everything has a bearing on your health.”

Allin is aware that many people have a false idea of holistic nutrition.

She cautions, “I’m not against going to an MD for certain things – they’re highly qualified and intelligent people. But I see myself as the preventative part of the equation.”

The new location certainly welcomes this type of one-onone interaction.

“We have a ‘cheers’ type of environment – where everybody knows your name,” she said.

“I like that – I’m honoured.”

How you respond to this type of investment risk will tell you a great deal about your own risk tolerance. Of course, no one, whether he or she has a high tolerance for risk or a low one, particularly likes to see declines. But people do react differently. If you’re the sort of person who can retain your confidence in your investment mix and can focus on the long term and the potential for a recovery, you may well have a higher tolerance for risk. But if you find yourself losing sleep over your losses (even if, at this point, they’re just “paper” losses), becoming despondent about reaching your goals, and questioning whether you should be investing at all, then you may have a low tolerance for risk.

This self-knowledge of your own risk tolerance should help inform your investment decisions — to a point.

Even if you determine you have a high tolerance for risk, you almost certainly should not load up your portfolio exclusively with stocks. If the stock market enters a prolonged slump, you could face heavy losses that may take many years to overcome, causing you to lose significant ground in the pursuit of your financial goals. Conversely, even if you discover you don’t have much tolerance for risk, you may not want to invest only in supposedly “safe” vehicles, such as Guaranteed Income Certificates (GICs).

During those periods when rates on GICs and similar instruments are low, as has been the case in recent years, your interest payments from these investments may not even keep up with inflation — meaning that, over time, you could end up losing purchasing power, which, over the long term, can be just as big a risk as market declines.

Ultimately, then, you’ll probably want to let your risk tolerance guide your investment choices — but not dictate them with an “iron hand.” So, if you believe you are highly tolerant of risk, you might have a somewhat higher percentage of stocks in your portfolio than if you felt yourself to be highly risk-averse — but in any case, you’ll likely benefit from building a diversified portfolio containing stocks, bonds, government securities, GICs and other investments. While this type of diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

By knowing your own risk tolerance, and the role it can play in your choices, you can help yourself create an effective, suitable investment strategy — one that you can live with for a long time and that can help you avoid the biggest risk of all: not reaching your long-term goals.

Warm weather sparks new fires There were four new small lightning-caused wildfires over the weekend, all holdovers that re-ignited with the warm, dry weather.

There were new starts in the Quesnel Zone (Pelican Lake area; 0.7 hectares) and Williams Lake-Central Cariboo Zone (Jones Lake, east of Highway 97; 0.009 ha) Saturday, and Quesnel Zone (island in Maud Lake; 0.5 ha) and Chilcotin Zone (20 kilometres south of Hanceville/ Lee’s Corner; 0.2 ha) Sunday.

Three of the wildfires are still in initial attack stage as of Wednesday morning. The Jones Lake fire is in patrol status.

Currently, there are a total of eight wildfires burning in the Cariboo Fire Centre: three from the weekend and five from August that are in modified response status.

Modified response status means the Wildfire Management Branch is monitoring these wildfires but not suppressing them, due to the ecological benefits of naturally occurring fires as well as their remote locations.

There are two modified response fires in Bowron Lake Provincial Park (Isaac Lake; 49 ha/ Indianpoint Lake; 2.7 ha) and one in Ts’yl-os Provincial Park (Chilko Lake; 2 ha). These fires may be visible to park visitors and people in the area may also be able to smell smoke. The CFC/WMB is working in co-operation with BC Parks to manage these fires.

The other two modified response fires are in the Horsefly/Likely-Central Cariboo Zone, in remote locations in the Cariboo Mountains (Niagra River Valley; 43 ha/Summit Lake 3 ha).

Fire is a natural process in the Cariboo-Chilcotin’s environment. It helps maintain a healthy forest and a diversity of plant and animal habitat.

The CFC/WMB is using patrol flights to monitor the modified response wildfires and check the region for more lightning-strike holdover fires.

The current fire danger rating for the CFC is mixed: low in the southeast part of the region, moderate in the central and northeast and high in the west, with pockets of extreme near Middle Lake, Tatla Lake, Puntzi Mountain and Riske Creek in the Chilcotin. The fire danger rating is forecast to rise this week for all areas in the Cariboo-Chilcotin.

There has been a total of 316 wildfires (267 lightning-caused; 69 person caused) in the CFC this season, burning 2,498 ha.

An official in Dix’s office said Tuesday no date or time has been set for the announcement. The NDP caucus meets Wednesday (Sept. 11) for the first time since the legislature adjourned in late July, where Dix is expected to inform the party’s MLAs of his decision.

Dix has faced calls from within his party to resign since the NDP lost the election to an unpopular B.C. Liberal Party coming off the repeal of the harmonized sales tax and other controversies.

NDP finance critic Mike Farnworth said Tuesday he will wait for Dix’s announcement before clarifying his own leadership intentions. “But hey, I finished second last time,” Farnworth said.

Energy critic John Horgan and other potential successors have also kept their intentions under wraps as the party prepares for its annual convention in November.

Strict guidelines

he news about frosh chants at the University of B.C. and St. Mary’s University in Halifax has shone the light of publicity on some of the less-desirable aspects of campus life at many of Canada’s post-secondary institutions, including some of the most prestigious.

The chants, which have received attention, portray young women as sex objects and glorify violence against women. They are far more than the “school spirit” chants which student leaders say they are, because they put into words what some students actually think about life on campus.

While the respective student societies say they are disciplining the leaders of the specific organizations involved, this is not enough. University leaders and governments may have to become involved.

Student societies on most campuses are notorious for protecting insiders — those deeply involved in student politics. It’s a lucrative profession, as students are forced to pay fees to student societies, whose officers are elected by a tiny percentage of students.

University administrations have to start getting much tougher with student organizations and demand far more accountability. This applies in the area of finances, elections, conflict of interest and, as highlighted in this case, initiation procedures.

Provincial governments also have a role to play in this – something they have shied away from.

These universities are under the control of provincial legislatures and most of their operating funds come from taxpayers.

It is appalling that institutions which are supposed to train young people to take their place as responsible adults allow such behaviour to take place.

The fact that these frosh chants are supposed to be kept under wraps, and that participants are forced to take part in them, makes matters even worse. Universities are supposed to be a place for free expression, not forced behaviour.

Provincial Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk and other provincial governments need to set strict guidelines for student societies and immediately suspend those societies which do not comply with basic rules of responsible behaviour.

Everyone deserves respect

ast month an Ontario grandmother received an anonymous letter in the mail from an apparent mother in the neighborhood, who was furious over the “noise polluting whaling” of the woman’s 13-year-old autistic grandson.

The writer suggested she “go live in a trailer in the woods with her wild animal kid” and even recommended euthanizing him so they’d all be better off.

The hateful letter went viral on the internet and people were appalled by its cruel and heinous content.

My friend Chris Smith said she was outraged as well, but not surprised in the least.

“Nine out of ten medical professionals don’t know how to deal with mental disabilities,” she said.

“How can we expect the general public to understand? Ignorance can sometimes breed extreme cruelty.”

She should know. Her 33-year-old mentally disabled daughter has been ostracized and discriminated against her entire life. Last fall she was assaulted, unprovoked, by a couple of teenagers who thought it would be a good idea to call

On A Brighter Note her disgusting names and spray bear repellent directly into the eyes of her and her caretaker while they sat on a park bench eating a snack.

“Because of her mental ability she still thinks she did something wrong and deserved to be attacked,” Chris said.

“She’s been self mutilating by digging into her own skin ever since.”

And it’s not just young thugs who have been awful.

Chris said it’s not unusual for grown adults to stare at her daughter rudely, or completely ignore her like she doesn’t exist.

“I even had a doctor suggest that I stop putting so much effort into her and just allow her to die during one of her seizures,” she said.

It’s hard to imagine that such a complete lack of compassion for our fellow humans still exists during these modern times, but,

to know that this could happen to anyone, anytime.

One day they could be perfectly fine, but the next they could have an accident and be severely handicapped for the rest of their lives, too.”

Another one of my close friends explained how his disabled son had become his teacher and motivator, humanizing and humbling him in ways he never imagined. He also pointed out that some people are afraid of these special individuals, but shouldn’t be.

“Mentally handicapped people are rarely criminals, bigots, deadbeats or any other character types that plague the general population,” he said.

“They can be childlike, frustrated, difficult and obsessive-compulsive, but it’s almost always an honest expression of their true self.”

If we keep that in mind when dealing with a mentally disabled person, it should be much easier to connect with them.

Vulnerable and innocent, they are worthy of our best.

heartbreakingly, it does.

Back in the day when institutionalizing people with disabilities was the norm, my grandmother’s friends Donna and Ed rejected the advice of everyone and raised their severely mentally and physically handicapped son in their own home.

Growing up surrounded by the love and attention of his parents, Donny was light years ahead of the men that I took care of in a group home while I was in my early twenties.

The four men, aged 30-40, living in the home where I worked were all abandoned at birth because of the disabilities they were born with. None of them could speak or go to the washroom themselves, or do many of the things that Donny was able to do.

It seemed clear to me that they were in far worse condition because they had been hidden away like monsters in an institution for most of their lives.

“Things are much better than they used to be,” Chris said in regard to the way our society treats the disabled now.

“But for the people out there who are still mean and intolerant, they need

The viability, feasibility and need for this project is based on studies and conjectures that are six years old or older.

Six years down the road, we have an excellent opportunity to revisit these studies and conjectures to evaluate whether they were valid then and remain valid.

Has the Joint Planning Commission for NCRP done this revisiting?

Did the current members of the JPC critically read those foundation documents before promoting this referendum?

I invite every citizen and taxpayer to read one or all of those critical foundation documents before heading to the poll in November.

Unique rescue, unique solution, happy ending

O

ne spring, when a trailer was moved, a nest was discovered and there laid four furless, pink critters with eyes closed tight.

No mother could be found, so the babies were bundled up and surrendered.

These helpless creatures needed to be kept warm, safe and fed, so Willow took on the task. First of all, where to keep them so that work could still be done?

A crate? Too big and cold. A basket?

Better, but awkward.

With no other solution obvious, the critters were nicely tucked into her bra.

This was fine because they were still so small they stayed put and could be reached for the frequent feedings.

She kept them there until she went home and then the family joined in on the care and feeding. They were given goat’s milk with eye droppers every two hours and looked like tiny seals.

Have you guessed what they were?

Squirrels!

It was decided, though, the babies would continue to live in her bra when she went to work.

This lasted for about two weeks until the baby squirrels started to grow tiny sharp claws! Ouch!

At that point, a hamster cage was adapted and the squirrels were left at home. To keep them warm and secure, the cage was outfitted with a hot water bottle under a blanket. Quickly, the squirrels became active and outgrew the cage and then were moved to a tall bird cage where they could climb and play.

They loved to be held so they became the centre of attention for all involved.

But, knowing these squirrels would be set

free, the caregivers tried to not become too attached nor encourage the squirrels to become dependent.

At about three

months, a release day was chosen. The cage was put into a wheel barrow and the procession headed to the back of the property by the creek,

a perfect squirrel place. The door was opened and everyone cheered as the babies scampered out of the cage, out of the wheelbarrow and off

into the trees.

Women through the eyes of women

What began as a casual conversation outside the library has evolved to one of the most powerful gallery shows about women and how two artists interpreted that subject.

Anna Ashcroft said to Joan Ramsay Harker, “we should have a show together.”

And the rest of the story is hanging on the walls and sitting on plinths in the Quesnel Art Gallery.

“I was reluctant to have a solo show,” Ramsay Harker said.

“Now that we’ve done it together, I never want to do a solo show again,” added Ashcroft.

They agreed their work complements each other’s.

“There’s no competition. I’m a sculptor and Joan is a painter,” Ashcroft said.

Rock Paper Canvas – Women, the current show at the Quesnel Art Gallery at the Arts and Rec Centre, is so much more than just displaying their work, Ashcroft said.

“Getting to know each other, exploring our work, sharing the theme of women power, has been very rewarding.”

The two artists complement each other in many ways as well, with Ramsay Harker bringing excellent writing and organizational skills and Ashcroft providing a sense of whimsy and confidence. The show’s backstory is almost as interesting as the artwork itself, however what is displayed is powerful, expressive and infinitely poignant and stimulating.

Ramsay Harker presents a cohesive, progressive series of paintings depicting such subjects as selves, survivors and

sugar and spice; all subjects beginning with S. Bold, large canvases encourage the viewer to take their time and really explore the message and the media.

Ashcroft delivers her art through sculpture, wood, stone and even papier mâché. Each piece draws from what the artist sees in the raw material, always women and each with its own message. Her largest and possibly most impressive piece she calls Neither Fish nor Fowl. The towering wooden female sets forth Ashcroft’s feelings about menopause.

Whether large or small, Ashcroft infuses every piece with a message about women, their role in the world or the artist’s feelings about women.

“I’m interested in womanliness, exploring it. I’m an anthropologist of my own life,” she said.

Four papier mâché sculptures, designated Cariboo Girls, allowed Ashcroft to explore a medium not commonly used by sculptors.

“Once I found a product to preserve these scupltures, I was pleased with the results. They can now be displayed as garden sculptures,” Ashcroft said.

Ashcroft confided she sees women everywhere, in rocks, wood, paper.

“As an artist my constant model appears on demand in my mirror.”

In the show, the artists have created a seating space where the viewer can stop for a while and contemplate the work on display.

Both artists have recently experienced the loss of important women in their lives and have dedicated the show to them.

Family fun awaits at the Quesnel Fall Fair, Sept. 21 – 22 ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter

With summer winding down and fall underway, now is a great time for residents to take in the Quesnel Fall Fair, Sept. 21 – 22. From the vast array of arts and agriculture exhibits in the West Fraser Timber Room at the Arts and Rec Centre to cattle shows, rabbit and poultry exhibits, horse harnessing and driving demonstrations to an extensive vendor’s mall and a host of other fun activities, the Quesnel Fall Fair is truly a family affair. Bring the kids, grandparents, neighbours and friends for an entertaining two days at Alex Fraser Park.

And all of this is free.

One of the fun attractions is the United Way Firetruck Pull, slated for Saturday at 11 am.

It’s the ultimate tug of war challenge with teams of 10 people pitting their strength against one of Quesnel’s 27,000-pound firetrucks.

WFC celebrates 20 years

Organizers in high gear since March ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter As summer turns to fall, one of the premier seasonal events is the Quesnel Women’s Fall Challenge, Oct. 6.

It’s time to register and organizers report that entry forms have already begun trickling in.

However, for the volunteers who ensure this is a fun, successful event for almost 600 women, it starts well before the snow begins to melt in early spring.

“Actually, it begins after the lunch finishes,” Cathy Walsh said.

“I take the evaluation forms home and type them up.”

Both Walsh and fellow volunteer organizer Marilyn Van Leusden admitted the work doesn’t really finish until the last time and photo is posted, every table, chair, water jug and miscellaneous equipment and supplies are returned.

On Monday morning after the Fall Challenge, Van Leusden picks up flowers and cookies and delivers them to the Arts and Rec Centre as a thank you for all they do to facilitate the event.

“It takes about a week for life to get back to a normal routine,” she said.

“For me, it’s when I stop looking at my computer every half hour.”

Walsh said the first full day of doing things other than WFC she knows the event is truly done for her.

“And in March it starts all over again,” she said with a laugh.

It begins with phoning all the committee members to confirm their participation for another year and contacting potential new members before the March meeting.

“We need that for the entry form; it’s very time sensitive,” she added.

Sponsorship is also started fairly early and finishes by midSeptember.

“Everyone helps solicit draw prizes and that continues almost until the race day,” Walsh said.

By May, with the assistance of Fred Paulson at Big Country Printers, the design is chosen and Van Leusden finalizes the merchandise aspect of the event.

“This is our 20th anniversary, so that was incorporated into the design,” she said.

“We’ll have a big cake, created by Quesnel Bakery and served at race package pickup and the luncheon.”

The committee has also been busy creating posters and flyers with pictures from past years and featuring some of the founding committee members.

“We also have a collection medals from past years,” Walsh said.

“And we have a trivia contest which will happen along the route.”

Both women emphasized how important volunteers are and with a requirement of between 60 – 70, committee members start solidifying commitments early.

“We know QFC wouldn’t happen without the volunteers who commit, year after year,” Walsh said.

“And this year, we have a terrific prize for one lucky volunteer.”

As race day approaches, some of the last minute details are completed.

Merchandise must be right and the numbers good so each participant gets what they ordered, then the shirts and other things have to be sorted and folded. Race packages must be assembled, equipment must be in the right place at the right time.

“After registration closes Friday night at 6 p.m., all entries are entered on the computer and sent to the Stride and Glide site where bib labels are created and then driven down by noon on Saturday in time for race package pickup,” Van Leusden said.

“The guy from Stride and Glide also sticks around to create last minute bib numbers.”

Once race package pickup is finished, a list is created for lunch participants, including random computer draws for door prizes.

After securing proper insurance requirements, putting dog notices at every mailbox site (no one wants to be harassed by an animal), advising the RCMP

and ambulance of the event, marking the route (checking for potholes and such), arranging port-apotties and a myriad of other details, the volunteers are up bright and early race day, long before the first participant arrives.

Each and every volunteer must have everything they need.

With seven stations along the race route, first aid kits, vests, signs, tables and water jugs must be in place.

The volunteers are in constant communication and the Dragon Lake boat launch area is a hive of activity.

Each participant (almost 600) must have their number properly affixed.

According to Walsh, one of the biggest headaches for the entire event is late registrations.

“We still have large numbers of people not picking up packages on Saturday and they then must stop at Dragon Lake school and that’s where late registrations happen as well,” she said.

But with music blaring and excited participants ready for the start gun, the mass start begins with walkers and runners (marathoners will begin slightly earlier this year) on another epic Women’s Fall Challenge.

Let the information flow Seniors Day at the Market draws great response The Farmers Market was bustling on Saturday, with regular market activities and the added bonus of Seniors Day during which senior adults had their blood pressure checked, talked with nurses, learned where their glucose levels were at, enjoyed a pancake breakfast (proceeds to Lions’ Seniors Housing project) and spent time visiting and learning about about various projects and services available to them, including the new walking program and health passport program which distributed 75 passports and more were requested.

Organizer Sue Ferminger reported the Lions served 244 breakfasts.

At the first walk in the soccer facility Monday morning, 21 senior walkers took advantage of the opportunity.

“It was terrific to see so many people taking part on such a beautiful day,” she said.

Stone and Johnson enjoy Fiddle Grand Masters

It seemed to me to be a little more relaxed this year in Saskatoon than when we were in Ottawa, or maybe we are starting to get the hang of it.

Things were a little different.

Instead of the regular meet and greet concert which showcases each province’s talent, we were invited to the John Arcand fiddle-fest grounds for a dance. This year’s judges, Calvin Vollrath, Mark Sullivan, Louis Schryer and MC Gord Stobbe started the party, followed by Alfie Myhre, this year’s lifetime achievement award recipient.

Several of the contest participants grouped up and played together. The dance was wonderful and of course Gord had to throw in a bit of square dancing as well. Such a fun, social evening with incredible talent!

Saturday was contest day! The events didn’t get underway until around noon and an orchestra of many of Canada’s up and coming fiddlers of all ages started

It was nice to be reacquainted with old friends and to meet new ones. It was very exciting to be there while history was made – to be there the first time in 24 years that the Grand Masters was held outside Ottawa. Congratulations to the competitors and finalists and many thanks to our family, friends and our local Old Time Fiddlers for their support.

The Quesnel Bombers and Correlieu Clan kicked off their season last Saturday in Prince George.

The day was packed with football action, with a bevy of Prince George teams joined by teams from Vanderhoof and Quesnel, including everything from atom to high school ball.

The atom Cariboo bombers won their first game the team had ever played, coming out on top against the Prince George Panthers, 19-14.

Coach Cody Berge was thrilled with how his team played and the depth of skill they have.

“It was awesome,” Berge said.

“We just played to our strength, which is speed.”

The Bombers got a touchdown on their first play, and kept Prince George scoreless through the first half.

In the second half, P.G. changed

up the strategy and managed to slip a couple of touchdowns past the Bombers.

And most importantly to Berge, the kids had a blast.

The peewees weren't so successful in their first outing, as they were playing against teams filled with more experienced players.

“It was a learning experience for all of us,” coach Jason Lightening said.

For their first game of the day, the Bombers lined up against Vanderhoof.

It being the first organized game of football for everyone, coaches included, it was disorganized, but Lightening said he saw his players walk off the field with a smile, eager to play again, which is the most important thing for the young team.

The Bombers then took on one of the Prince George peewee teams and made a large improvement.

“We looked like a team out on the field,” Lightening said.

The game was close throughout, but a touchdown for Prince George in their last play put them up 19-0 over Quesnel.

The Clan opened up their season against DP Todd in the Saturday football extravaganza as well.

The Clan struggled against the Trojans, who came into the game with three games already under their belts, losing their first game of their season 40-6.

Despite the loss, the coaching staff were happy with their team.

“We were happy with the enthusiasm, level of play and particularly the fitness level,” coach Jeff Morris said.

“We obviously have areas we have to work on.”

The Clan held DP Todd to 22-0 at the half, with Correlieu’s lone touchdown coming courtesy of Seth Kennedy.

The Bombers and the Clan will bring their game home to Cariboo field on Sept. 21 for a celebration of football in Quesnel.

Vile Pole to attend nationals

Recently, Quesnel locals Joel Kolenchuk and Jenny Phillips, also known as Vile Pole Arts, qualified and competed at the Canadian Pole Fitness Championship provincials in New Westminster.

They went into the competition knowing they were up against stiff competition. In fact, one of the opposing teams included an international champion in the soloist division.

Regardless of the competition and many trials and tribulations, including injuries, car troubles and the competition itself running nearly two hours late, Vile stepped onto the stage ready to perform with spirits high, giving the judges and the audience quite a show.

"It wasn’t a performance, but an experience,” one audience member said.

“I forgot that I was at a competition and completely lost myself in the performance. I literally swooned in my seat."

Through the art of pole dancing, the duo told a heart wrenching saga of love and loss and the fears that come with both.

Their performance showcased balancing acts, hand to hand acrobatics, dance lifts and pole moves that have never been seen before in the pole industry.

"We wanted to be as original as possible, to really showcase exactly who Vile is," Kolenchuk said.

The risk of using such unconventional material paid off.

After much deliberation, the judges came to a decision – Vile placed a close second.

They finished so close that they too were invited to represent B.C. at the

"It was an honour to step onto the stage, alongside some of the greats."

Phillips said.

Now, as the two polers prepare for the next, and biggest step in their competition career, Quesnel can boast having fostered some national level talent and, who knows, with a little luck and a lot of hard work, maybe even competitors in the Pole Fitness World Championships.

here’s a saying that goes something something something pain, something something, mumble gain.

I got the first part, so now I’m hoping for the next part, which I’m thinking, in this internet age, should come sometime next week.

That’s how this works, right?

When I walked in the door, the boxing gym’s coach, Matt Jonas Gagnon Tessier told me a lot WINTER WEIGHT of guys go into the gym, try to keep up and then never come back because it hurts too much. Don’t do that he told me.

But in the back of my head was a voice that said ‘you can do this.’ And I could, more or less, for one session. The next, however, might be something a little different.

All this pain is courtesy of me not listening to my body and being completely out of shape going into this.

But here’s the thing: what makes the pain possible makes it possible to train without it, i.e. it’s a very self driven atmosphere in the gym. Rarely will somebody be on you to skip faster or punch harder. If you want in the lines to practice your punches, you get in the lines. If you’re running out of breath during the interval skipping, take a break.

Or don’t and feel those muscles burn.

This offers a lot of leeway to trainees and a lot of ways to slack off if your not careful with yourself. If you’re the type of person who works well alone, this type of training might work well for you.

Then again, if you like to work with people, bring a friend and you can chat through the interval skipping, as long as you’re not out of breath.

But do yourself a favour on your first trip and don’t try to keep up. The people in the club have spent a lot of time working some very specific muscles you may not know you even have until they hurt the next morning and maybe even the one after that.
